On the Scene: The Paula Abdul 'Idol' gaffe heard 'cross the nation

Apr 30, 2008, 12:11 AM | by Adam B. Vary

Categories: American Idol, Hell to the no!, On the Scene

Paula_l Simon Cowell called tonight's episode of American Idol "officially the strangest show we've ever done," and I don't know about y'all, but from where I sat inside the Idol studios at CBS Television City, I'd say Simon was referring to that glorious moment when, halfway through the show, Paula Abdul critiqued both of Jason Castro's songs after he'd sung only one.

Let's take a quick step back. With the final five contestants each cramming two Neil Diamond tunes into the hour-long production, it was indeed an unusually frenzied evening, and the judges refrained from commenting on the singers' first songs. At the end of the first half of the show, Ryan invited all the Idol contestants on stage and then had the judges run through their thoughts on the first half of the show. (Stage manager Debbie Williams had to step on stage herself to motion the Idols to come out to the stage, as if, perhaps, this half-way check-in wasn't entirely planned.) Randy shocked no one —"just OK…doing your thing…the bomb"—and then, with executive producer Nigel Lythgoe and Debbie watching from the wings, it was Paula's turn.

"Oh gosh—we've never had to write these things down, uh, fast enough," she said. "Jason, the first song, I loved hearing your lower register, which we never really hear." So far so good. "Um, the second song, I felt like your usual charm, it was missing for me. It kind of left me a little empty." Huh? The audience began tittering with confusion, and Nigel and Debbie both began quietly freaking out. Paula continued, unaware. "The two songs made me feel like you're not fighting hard enough to get into the top four." By this point, several audience members were openly cracking up, Debbie had to stop herself from stepping on camera to end the madness, and Nigel was frantically gesturing a single finger to anyone who could see him: ONE SONG! THEY'VE ONLY SUNG ONE SONG!

"So, David Cook," Paula continued, until Randy saved the day: "Oh, they've just done the first song though, just the first one." The tension was finally broken with this apology (of sorts) from Paula: "I thought you—Oh my god, I thought you sang twice!…You know what, this is hard! You know what, I'm looking at, it's your notes, David [Cook]. You were fantastic." As Simon swooped in for his chance to scold the Idols, Nigel stepped off stage to, I'm assuming, get the on-site EMTs to give him some oxygen. At the ad break, the judges were all whisked out of the studio, Syesha Mercado, David Cook, David Archuleta and Brooke White left waving to the audience, and Jason Castro was left on a stool, stage center, contemplating what, exactly, had just happened. (Get more on last night's shenanigans in Slezak's TV Watch.)

A Fox spokesperson declined to comment, and Paula's rep did not return e-mails seeking comment. Below is the clip in question. What do you think, PopWatchers? Was this just an honest mistake, or did the whole event strike you as bit more...curious? (If you're looking for our regular on-the-scene write-up, don't fret, it's coming soon. It's just that this was too juicy not to bring up as soon as possible.)

Paulo Sat, May 10, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

I take back everything I wrote. Nigel was holding a gun to my head and I had to type that drivel. Honestly, since the show brags about finding "undiscovered talent" and that "America decides who will be the next American Idol", I am appalled to know this is not true. The show is rigged and Paula, my dear friend, lifted the veil off of the hoax. Also, I do know that MONEY DOES NOT BUY HAPPINESS OR CONTENTMENT. I apologize for insullting you all.

Donut Tue, May 6, 2008 at 04:08 AM EST

This is the most unique and well managed AI blog that I have seen yet, and I have seen a few (americanidol, idolchatter, idolexpose, etc..) thanks for being here!

First, Paula stays. Ratings would suffer (poll results already published) and the networks don't care what she is on, so long as she is lucid and can read her cards. Preferably in the correct order, but if not, they will cover for her.

In case you haven't noticed, she is the only woman on staff and onstage.

America and Idol are attached, like it or not. There's been a merger, and Paula, regarding the feminine side of the bonding, you are it.

Unless Paula has a 'Seven Year Itch' in some other career direction, the marraige goes on.

And if you think some exec could just fire her, and replace her just like that, well, think again - fire her for doing what in all likelihood the other judges are doing too? Can you spell 'messy divorce'?

Paulo Tue, May 6, 2008 at 12:13 AM EST

Hi...I am Paula's freind. What a lot of negative comments. What do you want now. An empty chair. Another judge. Or just accept that maybe is not perfect..ALL THE TIME. Imagine doing that job..so tiring. And on a live show you are under the spotlight. Give it up. You are so destructive with your urban comments. It is tall poppy...you are jealous of her success, aren't you. She IS rich and famous...and you are not. So any little thing...you have a slamming match. Same with the show. The producers are wealthy. You are comparatively not. You are jealous of them too. Aren't you. And Dolly. And Neal. And these successful talents . All of them. They make you really sick, because you are not talented, or rich or have the brains to create such a successful show. That IS your issue. The rest is wallpaper to cover up your lack.

I agree. I figure that one day we will watch an episode of Behind The Scenes AI edition and learn all about what we already suspect. Too bad Paula will be talked about in past tense since she will be dead from whatever is ailing her because people around her enable the behavior instead of calling her on it and making her take serious steps to remidy it.

You made sense to me and I agree. I have a feeling we will learn more about the "mass manipulation" in the years to come. After gag clauses in the contracts expire, people who worked for the show will spill the beans. Can't wait!

gilbertmaple Sat, May 3, 2008 at 12:44 AM EST

whoa dude....it's time to get back on your meds...

Knight Poet Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

PART 3 (a continuing continuation...)

Padded rooms are filled with lots of nice people. Drawing attention to Paula's "niceness" does not solve the real problem. The truth will probably come out...eventually. I wonder how far Paula would get on "The Moment of Truth" show? I bet that episode would score a top Nielsen rating.

For the record, what I still want to know is how could Paula be so completely unaware of her surroundings to be mistakenly convinced that Jason sang twice (since neither the mixed-up-with-David-Cook-notes-on-cards theory or the I-saw-Jason-at-dress-rehearsal explanation addresses her conspicuous disorientation).

Knight Poet Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

PART 2 (a continuation...)

The P.R. Survival Handbook perhaps thinks their average viewer is dumb. They are wrong. The average toddler could probably see through such arrogant attempts to make a problem go away by ignoring it (and ignoring the collective intelligence of their audience as well).

2) A 10-year-old boy from PA calls in to ask why Paula always gives everyone a break (paraphrasing from my recollection).

The P.R. Survival Handbook perhaps thinks that reminding viewers that Paula is, after all, the nicest of the judges, justifies the occasional manifestation of either Paula's dementia and/or a rigged show where weekly outcomes (which contestant is dropped) are determined well in advance (and have nothing to do with phoned-in votes or the targeted transmission of text messages).

Knight Poet Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

AND THE MANIPULATION CONTINUES...

PART I

Was I the only one who observed the following
items on the AI results show that appeared to be something right out a Public Relations Survival Handbook?

1) Tell Ryan to be intentionally vague about referring to online rumors about Paula so that when he assures everyone that Paula is still part of their AI family, they will automatically assume he is referring to rumors about her potentially being fired which will then create a DIVERSION from the real issues involved such as why she needs more one than excuse to try and explain her bizarre behavior (neither excuse making much sense to me) and whether or not her strange behavior is just the tip of the iceberg (with the iceberg being the fact that the show is nothing more nor less than a rigged experiment in mass manipulation).

LIMOR Fri, May 2, 2008 at 02:41 PM EST

I THING SHE NEED TO REST AT HOME NEXT YEAR.

Paula A. Fri, May 2, 2008 at 12:03 PM EST

My truth has spoken out. I will on and, and, the show, which is fabulous for, ah, uh, and the young beautiful people. The producers are, were wrong to, uh, ask for the comments, which clearly I was not ready for the response of which, and, and were accurate in the quality. The soul, my spirit and is glorious in truth, I look forward to being and, and, and judging the talented, fresh, spectacular for many more seasons. Watch for more fun! Tuesday.
I love you all and the natural beauty of it.

details Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:55 AM EST

yeah, simon and randy are clearly covering for paula in the clip... if she'd screwed up like that, simon would've made fun of her. instead, he looks stunned and then covers for her. and she's clearly trying to cover for herself when she smiles and says to DCook "these are your notes." it's rigged.

momo Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:49 AM EST

When has reality tv ever been "real"?! its entertainment people and like it or not the absent minded consumers of america will buy anyone's cd (jordin sparks tatoo? come on!) no matter how much they screw up it'll still be a hit show

Misty Monceaux Fri, May 2, 2008 at 01:30 AM EST

In my opinion..several people need to change the channel and stop the griping .. find a hobby...your raising your blood pressure needlessly..obviously music and entertainment isn't your forte. To each's own.
SO..Paula made a mistake.
THIS MAY BE SHOCKING TO SOME VIEWERS:The people on your tv screen are REAL people not perfection robots like alot of you believe you are. You must learn to separate the two. The ONLY Perfection is GOD whose countless creations proves existence.
As for the chosen mentors- (Neil Diamond,Dolly Parton,Andrew Lloyd Webber etc.) Being a true artist or entertainer has to include diversity. By selecting these mentors they are revealing "the diverse" from the mere "karaoke singers".Check out the record sales, awards assets and etc..of the mentors and you'll see that obviously someone(Millions!) thinks they are talented! We in the entertainment industry owe alot of our own success to these mentors' achievements. Thus paving our way.
David Cook is a true artist

stella Fri, May 2, 2008 at 01:14 AM EST

i think that paula is obviously on some serious scrips...i don't think that she was commenting from a script or that the judges script their comments based on rehearsal, which who cares if they watch reheasal, that doesn't mean crap. American Idol gets more boring every year, listening to all of those damn ballads is torture, i usually just watch the recap at the end of the night, but i did happen to catch live Paula's blunder. I think she was messed up because they weren't supposed to comment until the very end of the show rather than half through, at least that is what they said at the beginning, so she probably thought through her drug fog that the show was over and was scrambling to find comments for two songs.

Jennifer Thu, May 1, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

Even more upsetting than Paula making a complete spectacle of herself was Ryan the next night putting the "network spin" on the situation by saying "we are family" (gag)and "the rumors are not true". What rumors? I believe the poor woman's symptoms speak for themselves loud and clear. She is either drunk, has a drug problem, has dementia or has a terrible brain tumor. Whatever the cause, she needs a doctor and the producers and network need to stop enabling her behavior. It is so so sad.

Why is everybody so surprised from Paula Abdul, the most inarticulate person in TV history. Just par for the course.

Murphy Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

I am the happiest man in the world. I need more people like Paula A.

"If there's more than one possible outcome of a job or task, and one of those outcomes will result in disaster or an undesirable consequence, then somebody will do it that way."

David A. should win
David C. should win
the rest should have been gone a very long time ago.
regardng Paula, whatever is happening, i hope she under a doctors care.

Complete fraud..you can see by the reaction of Ryan, Simon and Randy...it was like oh, oh...game over...check it out here...http://clubupopblog.blogspot.com/2008/04/american-idol-has-jumped-shark-thanks.html

This is genuinely the first time I considered the gaffe evidence the show was "fixed"... I thought those notes were from the judges' review of the dress rehearsal, which I've heard they attend for the clarity that you can't get during a screaming live show. BUT - why did Paula lie?

WHY?

Tracie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

Whoever wins will win because of their bigger fan base, not because of their talent.

Tammy Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

I did cringe watching Paula but then I do that every week when she is giving her view of the performances.
Really hope it is not a fix but would not be surprised, if David A wins then I will be convinced it is a fix, if David Cook wins in my opinion the best person will have won.

Lily Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:23 PM EST

paula is on massive amounts of pain killers. shes always fucked up, look at her reaction, she looks so high trying to explain what just took place. i was not aware they watched the rehersals, i feel a little disapointed, but not so much. what sucked....was that format. stop changing everything up, we love the show...they don't have to try so hard, you know? but yeah, tuesday night was interesting, and very very uncomfortable. i felt so bad for her, she just looked like a babling idiot who ate a bunch of pills, came to work on the number one show in america, wasted...out of her mind. and why does it look like she cant move her face and mouth. anyways, no disrespect meant to paula...we all have our addictions, i just hope she can get better :)

And furthermore...they aren't technically judging anymore, anyway. They're just critics. We are the judges. They don't decide anything anymore, we do. Saying Nigel is needing an EMT...give me a break.

Tracie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

This is nuts. It's no secret they judges watch rehearsal. They've even spoken of it before, commenting that it is difficult to hear the contestants during the performance because of audience noise, so they base much of their opinion on what they hear in rehearsal. No secret, jeeze.

Lisa Thu, May 1, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

You know people do make mistakes, no one is perfect, Paula doesn't deserve to be slammed over and honest mistake, after watching them before the show. Then the judging was changed. come on give her a brake.

Thu, May 1, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

Josie, I agree mostly to your comments. I do believe that David Cook is the most deserving winner!!!! He does have talent in all aspects of music, not just vocal skills, not to mention he has a certian appeal about him. I do not think that the show is "rigged" but I do believe that they should revamp the voting system to make it more fair and the judges should be more honest and forthcoming when the performance is bad, boring or otherwise not up to par. David A... nice voice but very sappy, not too hot on an upbeat/up to date song, Syesha...broadway queen, Jason...unique, likable but too folk songy, David C... Amazing voice, talented musician and composing talent, all around great!!!!

Sara Thu, May 1, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

As soon as I heard about this (I didn't watch the show live), I KNEW what happened b/c I've always known Paula watches the dress rehearsal. So, she had seen him sing both songs, and she's not being "scripted". However, a mistake like this--not noticing they'd only performed one for the show, after Ryan's intros and all--shows that she probably is "on" something.

Josie Thu, May 1, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

I've been trying to tell ppl for so long that this show is fake. What the judges say is planned and scripted, in an effort to shape public opinion the way they want it to go. Ultimately, your vote doesn't matter, the winner will be whoever they want to win, regardless of the number of votes. It's business, they are in it for ratings and record sales.

That's why you see Paula reading what obviously was scripted for her.

That's why David Archuletta can suck so bad and yet never get criticism. Let's see he's forgotten his lines, sings every song EXACTLY the same way,has shown no growth through the whole season, has ZERO stage presence and yet all he gets are rave reviews from he judges.

andy chambers Thu, May 1, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

Paula,Paula,Paula..at least some comic relief. What is with David Archuleta? He always looks like he is about to wet his pants or cry after each song. For God's sake, grow up. If he can't handle it now, how is he going to manage if he wins?
Jason Castro..same sound, style..every week. Syesha..can you say "Broadway, baby?". David Cook, growly but good.

Thu, May 1, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

On the subject of whether or not the show is scripted even in the slightest fashion is irrelavent. Utimitally it is the voting process that should be questioned. It is not truely fair to put these contestants futures in the hands of people that let their teens or preteens send a thousand text messages in for the "dreamy" contestant. They, the judges, should have some professional insite and control on the elimination process not just the ability to make "comments". Because as Simon points out repeatedly, it should be a talent contest not a popularity contest.

Craig Thu, May 1, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

Paula got her "notes" confused? I looked on my high def screen and she had three index cards with notes on both sides. In addition, each judge had a note pad so why did she have cards? Listen to her "read" her notes. If you take notes for yourself, you don't write a script to be read, you write a few words to refresh your memory.

If you watch her observe the singing, she is dancing around and doing anything but taking notes. And have you noticed a decided turnaround in the quality of her comments? A few weeks ago all she could do was mirror Randy's comments. But lately, she has had useful comments.

I don't buy the confusion or the "I saw the rehearsal" spin. It is clear to me that the producers have been scripting her for weeks. The screw-up was when Ryan, with time to kill, asked the judges for impromptu comments after the first songs. All Paula had was scripts for after the second song. In her drunken/drug stupor, she couldn't comprehend that she had to wing it.

Regina Thu, May 1, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Come on people, this is just another "Paula out to lunch" mistake. You can't understand anything she says most of the time any way, and throw something new at her and OMG! She needs to just not talk.

This is Hard Thu, May 1, 2008 at 08:22 AM EST

Jason was safe right away ... According to Dial Idol Syesha was the top contender for the night. When she was in the bottom two with Brooke, notice Ryan never said they were the two with the least amount of votes. The results keep getting phrased more and more ambiguously. Hmm.

john look Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:59 AM EST

she is out this year

Cynthia Thu, May 1, 2008 at 06:08 AM EST

Um....Hello people....Personally....I don't find Paula to be off. She's just fine with her inability to actually complete a full sentence....EVER! I don't care that AI stands up for her, but Paula..>GET SOME HELP...THERE ARE CHILDREN WATCHING!!

That being said - Jason sucks, David Archuletta (in my daughters words is a cute little chimp) David Cook is so a daughtry wannabe, Sayeesha(sp) is going to end up on Broadway and in movies, but most likely won't sing and poor Brooke is going back to being a nanny. I've never seen so much raw (LOL) emotion...Ryan's looking more constipated than usual and to have that Nigel and ALL that wasted time on his waste of a show is TURNING me OFF this whole concept. Make the elmination show 30 minutes...STOP making us endure ridiculous performances and STOP making these singers do this tired old stuff! Dolly Parton and Neil Diamond and Lloyd Weber....Jesus! I feel sorry for all the singers as they stumble through these old and moldies!

Lee Thu, May 1, 2008 at 04:35 AM EST

I think it's a real shame that a marginally talented singer like Jason Castro is still here while much more talented contestants have been sent home, specifically Carly Smithson. It just proves that the voting control is now in the hands of 12-16 year old girls who know nothing about quality voices, but just vote on looks. Parents are to blame for giving children cell phones.

Phenix Thu, May 1, 2008 at 01:51 AM EST

It's not a conspiracy, it's Paula. SHE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED!!!!! We've seen it year after year, her being less and less dependable for any form of unbiased critique of an Idol's performance...

Why should be we all be soo surprised that a drunk/crazy/drugged Paula would write out her notes on the singers before the show so that she would sound less cukoo?

AI has it's skeletons in the selection process and the "pushing" of certain contestants over others to influence votes, but Paula needs to take the fall for this.

Thu, May 1, 2008 at 01:00 AM EST

She could have been looking at notes for David Cook if the first comment she made to Jason was meant for David Cook. In D.C.'s song he did sing more in his lower voice.

meow Thu, May 1, 2008 at 12:15 AM EST

very interesting that it was Jason who was pulled out and called safe first after last night's antics

Jeremy Thu, May 1, 2008 at 12:13 AM EST

I believe the judges watch the rehearsals of all the contestants and pre-script their comments.

moe Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 10:13 PM EST

I think Jason Castro is a good singer, but not great. I find it a little strange that he sings only slow playing songs. He doesn't challenge him self. Every American Idol show I've ever seen, they make you work for it. He's the only one on this season who doesn't stretch him self. I also think Carly S.was way more talented then Jason will ever be. If Jason wins this show I will never watch American Idol again.

Chevy man Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 10:11 PM EST

paula you need to get off the crack or the pot or whatever you are on!!!

Beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

Yeah...Jason's back...love it!Thank God Whiny one, Brooke, has been put out of her misery. Did you love the spin tonight...you would think Paula is as pure as the driven snow...every time she makes a career gaffe, she comes on the show with teary eyes and a covered up dress...and then everyone defends poor Paula. Great spin to cover up the real issue...pre-scripting...what a sham...AI you should be ashamed for this crap.

I dont get it.. what was wrong with paula last night ?

soulman Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 09:04 PM EST

SLEZAK got a mention in the New York Times!!! That's so freakin' awesome! His (accurate) criticisms are being heard!!!

Helen Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

Go back and listen to Jason sing the first song...I got confused, too. I know the song that he was singing but there was a big "change" of arrangement that I thought he is already singing his second song. I think this is what confused Paula. Is it just me and Paula that got affected by the change?

Tammy R Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 07:41 PM EST

I never watched previous Idol's as much as I have this season. Paula seems to be buzzed every episode! Early on this season she looked as if she had a gimp eye -- one was sort of bigger than the other one. And last night, proves that the show is definitely rigged!!!!!!!! How else could Paula critique a performance that hadn't yet been done??!!?? I think that that is so unfair for the contestants and for the viewers. There is no defense for such an offense.

paula drinks Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:45 PM EST

anyone else catch that Paula called Syesha "Brooke" when she was critiquing her second song?

to Bruce Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

Totally agree. I thought David A was awesome in Top 24 week(s), growing and changing with each song. He's hit this plateau and he needs to get interesting and not have vocal cracks or get off.

Shel Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

Adam's full report is called How the Top 5 Songs Sounded, or something like that.

Shel Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

Adam's full scene report was posted at 3:40 or thereabouts. I just keep having a very hard time actually finding it on this site. If its not in the articles on the left, it is a bear to find things.

Jenks Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

To Bruce: I lurve your comments and totally agree. The kid is probably very talented, but he's going to suffer a la La Lohan from stageparentitis unless he busts out and lives a little.

Bruce Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

Its obviously rigged - for Randy to say that Archuleta was "the bomb man" after singing "Sweet Caroline" means that he needs hearing aids. It was one of the worst songs that Archuleta has ever done. Archuleta sang "America" ok but week after week they praise and praise and kiss is little a$$...are they afraid of Archuleta's dad? Archuleta is a cute little zombie - a "stepford singer" if you will. He's like a 17 year old Perry Como. Somebody needs to take that boy out - get him laid, crank back a bottle of Jack Daniels down his throat, push him off a cliff and let him hang glide, make him watch some porn, cut the line to his brakes & tell him to maneuver down a steep mountain AND THEN INVITE HIM BACK TO SING. Perhaps then, the depth will kick in. He's a star in the making but needs to live life a little. He's kinda creepy at this stage!

This season of AI is said to be the one with the best talent yet. Several contestants have played instruments in their performances&there are several different&distinctive styles represented: big-voiced pop vocalists;soulful singers;rockers;country singers;&singer/songwriters. All are greatly talented in their own way & all have deserved to be in the top 12. Jason has done much to impress so his fanbase has kept growing in the 2 months he's been on AI. He knows his musical strengths & who he is as an artist & shows it in each of his performances. He's also shown growth as a musician & willingness to take risks over time. It's true that Jason has a soft voice & doesn't have a giant range of several octaves. But while many singers belt their songs outward to the audience, Jason draws listeners in & creates an intimacy between them & the song. He has a pure tone, expressive phrasing & heartfelt way of connecting to the songs that reaches listeners.

I am at the studio now waiting for Nygel. I am offended by your hateful diatribes about me. Moi on drugs, you must be kidding. I wouldn't touch drugs. This blog has gotten completely out of control. Nygel, Debbie and Ryan are to blame for this mess. Oh wait, here they are now. Nygel tell them it's not my fault. Nygel, Nygel? Here Paula, take this little pill to calm your nerves. It will be all right soon.

susiehelper Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

notAteen.oldMOM.orAman. I hate to see a fellow blogger go away with sadness and confusion. (To Beamer) means the e-mail was addressed To Beamer. It does not mean that To Beamer wrote it. Now do you understand? Blogger Beamer is for Jason. Tivo81 and the other guy hate Jason and apparently women.

alig Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

this show is LOSING ITS CREDIBILITY. The ratings are down, the judges are as Simon would say, "predictable," and there's no real spark. This year we haven't had one alternative artist mentor the kids. It's sappy, old-school, and then they get mad at the contestants for not being hip recording artsists every week. Give them something to sing about.

Paula is USELESS to the show. If we wanted someone who constantly remarked about the contestants clothes and appearance, we'd hire on of the top model judges. I say, get another established SINGER who has bite to REPLACE her. American Idol is LIVE. If Paule thinks it's "hard" to play by the live rules, go judge a Bravo show.

There were ten year olds watching who weren't confused by the format. that is, until Paula went insane. Maybe she shouldn't attend rehearsals anymore.
If you're on enough DRUGS, time becomes irrelevant and comprehending the present and past can become, how do I say this, "confusing"

notAteen.oldMOM.orAman. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

I stated my opinion respectfully and admitted a typo/mistake. Is there something else I should be doing?

Tv Guide refers to this show as a reality tv show where viewers follow judges while they pick who is the next star with the help of the public. I have never considered this a true and fair competition especially after hearing about the way the audition processes work and about all of the ringers they throw in because they don't trust the viewing public.

That said, I guess I must've messed up to even piss off the people I am siding with...

Have fun guys! This was way more exciting that the show itself.

Robin W. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

To Knight Poet: AWESOME! Would love to see it but it will never happen. People are sheep and will follow whatever they are told to do. Not one of them have the b**ls to break away from the flock and be a strong, independent human...they're all sheep!

Knight Poet Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

(continuing...)

Then after a brief pause that felt longer than it really was, all five contestants silently walk off the stage.

THE END (of AI)!!!

An alternative version of the above might have had a Carly-created tattoo (featuring the same message) prominently displayed on JASON'S cheeks (JASON CASTRO replacing DAVID COOK as the spokesperson for the others in that scenario) while the other four contestants merrily sang "MOON RIVER" before mellow-dramatically exiting like a well-synchronized chorus line from some banned off-Broadway production (either leaving on foot or maybe in some kind of shiny new Ford vehicle that perhaps accidentally runs over the judges and producers on their way out...ending AI's reign of ratings power with a BEEP and a BANG).

PAY-TV? I'd pay to see that.

:-)

Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

To Knightpoet: Great idea

Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

To notAteen.oldMOM.orAman...stay with us sweetie...it will all be clear to you soon...

Nygil L Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:50 PM EST

Paula A...stay with us honey...you just need to get through tonight...I'll have Simon prop you up. Also,Randy has been prepped, he's going to cry when Jason gets the boot...that will confuse everyone, since he's been the cheerleading squad for the two David's. Simon will say that he is shocked Jason is leaving because of his Syesha cover from last night. I'm still working on what Ryan's role will be tonight...perhaps he can flirt with Simon, that will deflect some attention from the Jason ejection.

Knight Poet Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

Here is what I'd like to see on the AI results show later tonight...

DAVID COOK suddenly interrupts RYAN SEACREST at the beginning of the show by (boldly) stepping right in front of him and while remaining utterly speechless, DAVID conspicuously holds out his extended hand like a death-kissed rock-star mannequin suffering from arthritis (on a bad-hair-day) as though to suggest to the alert cameraman to ZOOM IN on his (DAVID's) hand (which he does) and here is what was legibly scribbled upon one of the sweatiest palms in AI's history for all to read:

"THIS SHOW IS RIGGED. WE QUIT!"

notAteen.oldMOM.orAman. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

*correction*

I forgot the "to"

Dear "To Beamer".

Shelley Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

Paula should be booted. Jason did well on his first song, better than Archuleta & Brooke. I'm sure he was majorly distracted on his 2nd # by Paula's stupid mistake. I think the Producers are somewhat responsible for most likely providing the note card for her to read from. AI has made it very clear they want the David's in the final two...they probably already have the marketing campaign ready to air that week.

I started out watching this seasons AI because of "..the BOY WITH VOCAL PARALYSIS" (David Archuleta). Then Jason Castro appears when it gets down to the top 12 & sings "DAYDREAM" & I am totally blown away by this unique shy singer. He's smart, faithful to his convictions, respectful, charming. I also find out that several contestants have already put out CD's, had label contracts, won STARSEARCH, (FRAUD!) and I thought to myself, I thought this was a contest to find undiscovered talent? Having never had formal training, I feel Jason is MOST DESERVING TO BE WHERE HE IS.

Paula A. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

Ooohh Nygel L! Always looking out for me...you're the universe..and the stars..and all the planets with the brightest sun.
Bye now...I need more blue pills

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

To notAteen.oldMOM.orAman...you are seriously confused...I believe you should be addressing your comments to either Tivo81 or the man with no name (Rich M, I believe). Read the comments again...those 2 dweebs are the ones bashing women and Jason.

michael Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Could it be that the show isn't as live and in the moment as we think.

suzeet Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

Hey, you can enjoy or not enjoy Jason's performances, but you have no basis to call him a stoner. I have a son with Asperger's Syndrome (a mild form of autism) and his mannerisms are almost identical to those of Jason's - social awkwardness, saying inappropriate and goofy things, etc. My son is not a stoner but people think he is because of this neurological disease. I am in no position to diagnose Jason, but please cut him a break. There are many reasons that people may appear to be socially inept, and being stoned is only one of them.

notAteen.oldMOM.orAman. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

Dear Beamer,

I am not any of those options you listed. I am a 26 year old woman who happens to prefer the mellow, sweet sounds of Jason Castro over the fake, the over-done, the crazy, and the arrogant. Out of the remaining contestants, he's the only would that could put out an album I would buy.

Try to respect that. You discredit yourself greatly by being so seriously rude. So some people are having fun ... It is just a reality tv show afterall. Lighten up.

Kiki Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

Paula's comments were definitely curious...I do feel that the show could be rigged by the Producers...I've read Nigel's comments in OK Magazine stating that Jason should have left instead of Carly and believe that in his capacity as a Producer, he should be objective...he's NOT doing his job well. I, too, was a supporter of Carly & Michael Johns and can't help but feel they were eliminated because they are not "American" status. They are still good and will do well w/o AI.

Nygel L Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

Paula A...take the blue one and the large white one with an alcohol chaser for now, I'll give you some additional options when I see you. By the way, please wear the tightest bustier you own for tonights show...we need to deflect the attention of all the men to what is really important. The women will be another challenge, but I'll put Simon to that task...he has such a way with women. Move it Paula, we have so little time to do damage control. I want you all in your seats on time tonight FOR A CHANGE.

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:23 PM EST

No you love everyone...that's how this thing started...it was because of all those lovingly nasty comments . Talk about ignorance...you wrote that particular entry in wikipedia. Now that your tired of the game...you can leave.

Paula A. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

Nygel L there is nothing for me to do at the office..it's so bright and sparkly here...everyone is talking about me and well...which pill should I take?

Rose Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

Paula A - have I told you lately that I think you're all the colors of the rainbow?

Nygel L Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:16 PM EST

Paula A...get off the net and get back to the office, we have a crisis on our hands of epic proportions that I created but we have decided to blame on you...now take your pills like a good little scapegoat....I'll write your apology spin for tonight's show.

To Beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

I don't hate women, don't even hate you, just your ignorance. Jason is going down tonight (and not on you, so don't get excited.) Hang it up, put it to rest. You're not clever. Just tiresome.

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

Wildkat...you are so right...this is fun.

To: Paula Abdul Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

It's Nigel's head that should roll, not yours.

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

To angry man who has no name and who hates women...guess I hit a nerve, now you have to prove your wilted manhood by defining anyone who likes Jason in your oh so limited way. Go play somewhere else little boy.

Paul Huh? Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:08 PM EST

Who knew that Neil Diamond wrote so many cool songs? Even the ones I didn't entirely care for, were kind of memorable. I'm still not entirely sure why Jason didn't do better last night. Seemed like the singer/songwriter guitar vibe should have fit him like a glove. He has the 70s hippie thing going for him.

Paula A. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

Thank you Annie C. I can see and hear that inner beauty of joy...that exists here...on this planet..everywhere...is special. Keep blooming and or blossoming into the flower you are...with all of your light...and I just...well....you...your the best!

Frank Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

Can't we all just get along?

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 04:00 PM EST

To Tivo...you call that engaging, I call it dull...engaging would require some clever repartee...your not up to the task...go back to holding hands with your Jason hater bro. By the way the fishing reference gives you away. So long, don't let the door hit you.

Johnny Reo Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

In Webster's dictionary, next to the word 'stoned' is a picture of Jason C.

To tivo81 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

Hey, I thought you weren't going to engage with beamer any longer? What gives?

ANNIE C Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

PAULA A.-NOT SURE WHO YOU REALLY ARE BUT I LOVE YOUR COMMENTS!!! VERY FUNNY! HEY MAYBE THE POOR CONFUSED TALENTED IDOLS WILL ALL GET TO STAY AND THE REAL PAULA WILL GET VOTED OFF! IN A PERFECT WORLD......

Sam I am, I Said Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

To WildKat: yeah it is fun to write B.S. about all this B.S.!

To Beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

Hey loser. Drop it. I've moved on. Take your opinions offline. You obviously have a lot of free time on your hands. You can be coy all day, but anyone who follows Jason C. so rabidly is either a) a teenage girl b) a post-menopausal woman c) a closeted male. Take your pick. He's so ethereal that no self-resecting male would vote for him. Either way, I don't care who or what you are, just take your opinions offline. Apologize to Jason? You just revealed yourself. You are so transparent. You ARE a pimply faced teenage girl.

but don't kid yourself. You're way transparent. Trying to pass yourself as anything else is a joke.

Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

beamer and tivo81...make up with each other and go make sweet love!

WildKAT Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

I'm laughing my bunz off at these amusing and amazing comments. Nigel Lithgoe has corrupted this once endearing and fresh show into a jaded, predictable, scripted and grossly unfair popularity contest instead of a talent contest. Paula jumped the shark long ago. The show is finally caught up to her last night. A.I. credibility is gone, baby, GONE. Now, isn't it fun to write all this B.S. about B.S.???

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

Mister angry man who can't sign his name (Rich, I believe)...you call that conversing...you should apologize to Jason for your nasty comments...he didn't deserve that crap from you and your bro Tivo. Don't go away mad...just go away.

tivo81 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

beamer, wow. just, wow. you're far more imbecillic than i thought and i'm not going to waste any more of my time or the other people's on the board's time by engaging you any more. Engaging you any longer would be like going fishing in a septic tank.

Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

I bet beamer and tivo81 are married to each other and just like to insult and argue with each other.

Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

The reason why bash Paula when she does something dumb is because she gets paid MILLIONS OF DOLLARS A YEAR for this "judging." Almost anyone who watches the show could do a better job than she does and it pisses people off that she cannot seem to pull herself together and still makes all this money. If it were any other job she would be fired in the blink of an eye.

Mindy Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

I'm tired of all the Paula gossip. People who genuinely expect the producers to get rid of Paula are even stupider than people who genuinely expected President Bush to get impeached. Don't you get it? The mere fact that people keep debating Paula's shenanigans is enough to keep her on the show. All publicity is good publicity. I would think that Popwatchers of all people should be familiar with that phenomenon.

BTW, I love Paula. She's real, and she's honest. And anyone who really thinks Randy contributes more constructive criticism than Paula clearly isn't watching the same show I'm watching.

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

To Tivo, Tivo, Tivo...replay is your forte....angry man is calling you bro....quick, go into the light.

To Beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

You are SOOO insightful. Too bad you have no idea about what you're talking about. Apologies to the others online here who's time I have wasted talking to you.

tivo81 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

Ravi, seriously F you, dude. what a crass way to insult a) this board and b) americans. Also, using the term undies in a bunch is a gendered term that is appallingly misogynistic. that's just unnecessary.

Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

PAULA WAS HAMMERED!!!!!

Gre Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

Everybody, stop busting on Paula. Her ability to see the future is a curse, not a blessing.

tivo81 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

beamer, that last comment cracked me up. you're not ONLY an idiot, you're funny too!

Ravi Shankar Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

Americans perplex me. You all have your undies in a crunch over a TV show. Can't you all just watch a program and enjoy it for what it is worth. Why are you all judging people. It is very sad. There is clearly something wrong with this woman and you are all so harsh to her and each other. OY!

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

poor Tivo81...limited vocabulary, limited brain.

Tim Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Paula Write you must be as dumb as the other Paula is. Must be the name.

tivo81 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

beamer, wow. i mean, i started out thinking you were an idiot, but since you've gone to all this trouble to prove it, i guess i now KNOW you're an idiot. thanks for the clarification.

Paula Wright Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

Okay people, enough about Paula, people have problems and make MISTAKES!! Its what makes us HUMAN!! When Randy or Simon mess up its NO BIG DEAL but let Paula and the fur flies!! Its just sad, quit judging the judges and pray for the ones who have a hard time, if you knew anything about Paula Abdul's life, she is lucky to be alive after what she has suffered, I am GLAD she is on IDOL and proud of her. Now lets get to the most important thing, voting for the best most confident person on the show THE NEW AMERICAN IDOL!! Who will hopefully be David Cook!!!! He is clearly the best!!!!! And of course I'm not 17......... Please quit blaming Paula, and support her by saying a prayer for her. Or are you all PERFECT????????????????????

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

To the man with no name. Please don't quit your day job...playing guessing games about women is not your cup of tea. Let's all guess about who you are...fat, balding, drunken, pill popping, middle aged man inexperienced with net ett., closet type who roams the net for other guys just like him...insecure about their masculinity, but loveesss Memories from Cat's...probably has a Cher doll above his bed...tevo81 is your man.

Kathy Tipton Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

I agree that Jason doesn't really care if he is on or not. He acts bored all of the time. As far as the show there are some things that should be changed as far as it should be judged until the final two at least and a talent contest instead of a popularity contest. But heck, it is tv so don't watch it if it upsets you.

To Beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

... and you don't have to be old enough to have seen Cats on its Broadway run to at least take the time to figure out that the song was sung by Cats. He made himself look like a complete a$$ when he said that.

yellehs2 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

What a season this has been! While the past few shows have centered around whether or not Brooke would have a total meltdown on stage; Paula ran away with last night. What a mess. But a least I have a clear answer why sometimes the judges fail to mention obvious mistakes, and other times trash an obviously good performance. What I hate is how Randy turns on whoever he wants to leave, like Jason. Meanwhile, the only song running through my mind today is "Forever In Blue Jeans".

To Beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

Thanks for that heart to heart. I guess you figure that you have me all figured out with your theory of male jealousy. Too bad your poster boy has a vajay-jay. Oh snap! Since you are so insightful, let me see if I can return the favor and paint a picture of you ... I see a fat, pimple faced girl with braces singing to a poster of Jason over her bed. Awwww, how cute. Too bad he plays for the other team. Thanks for the psych-eval, but I'll pass. I tend not to take advice from pre-pubescent girls.

Trenchcoat Bob Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

None of this year's contestants compare with Haley Scarnato from last year. Now that was a talent! Meee likeeeeee!!

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

To Rich...you did scream in all caps. You and poor confused tivo81 sound like you should hold hands and jump off a cliff while spilling invectives about poor Jason....sounds a bit like male jealousy to me. By the way, the kid is young, Memories from Cats is not everyone's generational hit...mehaps you love a little feminine ballad way too much. Rich, sounds a bit like you already took a pill...are you a little wired angry man?

tivo81 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Rich, right on! Jo WAS more masculine than Jason...hmmm. I know, you're so right about Cats. I mean, after that, wouldn't you be more on your game this week? But no, he didn't even bother to learn the song! I mean, it's almost funny...if Carly wasn't kicked off last week.

Randy Da Bomb Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

Yo, yo, yo! Bring back my man Chuckie Cheezie.

tivo81 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

to beamer, maybe i am loony, but you're still an idiot.

elr Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

Does anyone else think this could be a way for the producers to get rid of Paula? Otherwise, why let her ramble on so long before they stopped her. Obviously Randy and Simon have stopped listening to her while she talks.

Jenn Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

Paula was the equivalent of Ashlee Simpson on SNL caught lip-synching while the wrong back-up track played.

Jenn Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

Paula was the equivalent of Ashlee Simpson on SNL caught lip-synching while the wrong back-up track played.

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

To confused Tivo81...I don't believe I was addressing you...you are completely loony.

Rich M. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

... and let's not forget that he didn't bother to take the time to research the song he sang last week for Andrew Loyd Webber week. He didn't know the song was sung by Cats?! Its in the musical Cats, for friggin sakes! Does that sound like someone who cares whether he stays or goes?

Spleen Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

Castro should sue if he gets booted tonight. Can't wait to see those depositions!

a Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

wow all the paula haters finally got the chance to pounce on her.

Rich M: To Tivo81 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

Right on. I'm in complete agreement with you on all counts, although to be fair, I think that Jo from the Facts of Life was a bit more masculine than Jason C.

tivo81 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

*oops.

not BOTHERING to learn the lyrics to Neil Diamond's song when meeting him? I mean, come on! This kid is missing some brain cells.

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

You all need to read the article above on EW under the headline called "Paula addresses gaffe on Ryan Seacrest"s show"...the spin has begun in earnest...unfortunately, Paula can't remember what she says from one spin to the next. This time she admits to watching Jason in rehearsal. This is such bunk...if they don't overhaul this show after this, they should all be fired. They should start by ejecting anyone tonight...at the very least, the contestants deserve a fair judging live...Jason didn't deserve to be treated this way....how on earth could anyone perform after he is reviewed before he performs...this stinks to high heaven.

tivo81 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Beamer, you're an idiot. Moving on, I'm still upset that Carly's gone (yes, i have a one track mind and NO, i will not move on). Paula's notes were obviously written down by someone else as I just posted earlier. I mean, the woman can't even speak coherently!! Does anyone believe she wrote those comments down coherently herself? I mean, they are pretty lucid comments and she could barely SPEAK them. No way she wrote them down herself. I'm just not sure who did. Nonetheless, I mean, Carly should be up there. David A forgets his lyrics repeatedly and nobody does or says anything (except the ever repetitive and at this point, super annoying Randy telling him he's the BOMB), Brooke is a decent artist behind the piano, but no American Idol and Jason's so one dimensional, it's beyond boring. Jason reminds me of Jo from the Facts of Life, doesn't he? Anyway, can we also mention Jason not BOTHERING

Leo Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

Well first thing, Paula needs to GO! I mean really!? Being a Youtube junkie I've seen Sharon Osborne judging on Britain's X Factor and think she would be a wonderful replacement for her. Also, I remember one year Gladys Knight guest judged on AI, and was impressed to finally hear intelligent critiques! She would also be a good replacement. Heck, know that I am thinking about it, have those 2, Sharon and Gladys, take Randy and Paula's spots. I may be able to regain the brain cells I lost this season if they did.

To Beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

Take the largest chill pill you can find and relax. Who's screaming? Did I put any exclamation points in my commentary or accuse you of anything? You are as entitled to your opinion as am I. I'm confident in what I think and don't feel the need to have to sway anyone else's opinion, nor do I claim to speak for anyone other than myself. You on the other hand, with your "Get over it!" comment seem to feel otherwise. Follow Jason's example, take a bong hit and relax. You'll live longer. This show has nothing to do with singing and perhaps even very little to do with "star quality". The irony is that Jason may get a huge sympathy vote for Paula's screwup, so you can happily dance in the aisles. I don't particularly care who wins, though Jason is my least favorite. Btw, for what its worth, I feel David A. is overrated as well.

sarah Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

Someone who was at the rehearsal said the judges were supposed to give their critiques after the second song. I think Ryan bringing the contestants on stage before the second song was a last minute plan to make sure they didn't run out of time for the judges' comments. And I don't think Randy saved the day at all. He and Simon sat there like two bumps on a log while Paula rambled on. I think someone off camera told Randy to say something.

Kathryn Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

I do hope that heads will roll over this horrible gaff of Paula's. How in the world was Jason supposed to sing after that? Although I love him and will buy his albums, no question about it, I did think he was the weaker singer this week. But Paula's idiocy has put the whole contest in question. Does remind me of the Game Show Debacle... and wonder if the FCC will be involved. They should be.

To: Vanessa Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

You obviously don't care about credibility or fairness. This is a big deal: The biggest talent competition t.v. could be scripted. This does matter.

Diane Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

You can't possibly believe Jason doesn't care whether he's on Idol or not. He just has a laid back personality. He's not going to show he's ruffled by anything so it looks like he doesn't care. People don't understand this. He's a great performer and singer and I will buy his CDs!

mscisluv Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

Where's our real On the Scene report???

vanessa Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

And Katie, I do feel bad for Paula...this has just gotten over the top ridiculous...

vicki Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Paula is completely insane. I doubt that she had anything prewritten - that wouldnt make sense they hadnt even sang them yet. anyway, they made fun of her good at celebrity prayer list.

Claire Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Well, I heard her ditzy excuse she gave this morning and *for her*, it makes sense. She was rushing around getting her buds into the show, ran and sat in her seat and Jason sang. She thought the show had started already. (That's the real ditz part). She quick made some notes. The original plan was to wait until after the second performance to give all the critiques, and all of a sudden she was ON. I suspect her ability to think fast on her feet is gone. Once she messed up there was no taking it back, although she tried.

vanessa Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

Come on, people! This whole thing was just Paula being Paula...she made a mistake, ok a huge, stupid mistake, but that´s what it was. If people cared what the judges say, Carly would still be on it, since Simon has been saying she would be the next AI since 2005! At the end of the day, it´s us who vote. And I wouldn´t watch the show if it wasn´t for Randy, Simon and Paula. Just get over it.

Viewer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

"This is hard?!" Please, I'll take half the amount of money you are paying Paula for doing the easiest job on TV!

I ALMOST can sympathize given the amount of time the judges are NOT paying attention. Is it too much to ask to have them do the job for which they are being considerably overpaid, or at least have the manners to pretend to do so? Simon Cowell trying to make Paula mess up by whispering in her ear and draping himself all over her chair needs to STOP.

Please American Idol, more focus on the singers and way less on the judges and Ryan...

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

To the angry man without a name...lighten up on the screaming...this isn't rocket science. Obviously you don't like Jason...that's your opinion, not mine or others. Star quality is not tangible...it's just something people feel when they see or hear someone they like. The public defines the people that they like as stars in the end...so get over it!

Dee Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

How "shocked" will everyone be if Jason gets so many sympathy votes that Davis A goes home because of so few votes? I feel like David A is not as good as the judges praise him at being while Jason has the sweetest attitude and a nice folksy voice. David C will probably win. I just hope he is in the final 2 with someone other than David A.

CAM Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

I really do think that Paula simply commented on the rehearsal she saw/heard. The whole set-up last night was frustrating as it was so rushed. At the start of the show, Ryan said the judges would not comment until after they saw the second performances and then suddenly, since they were a few minutes ahead, he's asking them to comment. As wacky as Paula is, I would bet she really was reacting to Jason's dress rehearsal. Don't they occur just before the show starts?

Katie Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

I feel bad for Paula. I'm probably the only person in the world, I realize... but it's like people are just waiting for her to goof up so they can pounce on her. I think she's been really coherent this year, and yesterday although she made a silly mistake, she doesn't deserve all the negativity she is getting. Who cares, all she did was mess up her notecards... she got a little confused...it was a weird night, but it's not necessary to be so mean about the whole thing.

TFB Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

"this is hard" - yes, hard to remember what the producers told you to say . . .

This show "jumped the shark" before season 7 even started. Its been rigged since the first season, now its apparently scripted as well.

Diane Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

I happen to love Jason. He is very unique. And I agree that he is not given the same respect as the other contestants. If they didn't like Brooke she would have been gone long ago with her antics. Who ever heard of starting a song over, forgetting lyrics and making it through anyway. She's come as far as she can. Hopefully she's gone tonight. I think it's a disgrace what they did last night.

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

Let's talk about who really has zero creds...it's the producer. Please, with the stupid swaying mosh pitters, the ridiculous mentors, Randy's obvious lovefest to have a David A & C final and the obvious manipulation to get rid of the "foreigners" Carly and Michael...this show is beyond rigged and ridiculous. Think we all need to send the show a list of fixes for this mess. The show has truly lost any credibility.

To Beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

No, I am not that naive to think that all great singers who make it have a great range (I never made that claim) and JASON IS BY NO STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION A GREAT SINGER. There are lots of singers who have a limited range, but are talented in other ways. What exactly is his talent. Most importantly, everything he sings, he does listlessly. Between his vocal delivery and his druggie persona, he comes off like someone who doesn't even care to be there, so I say, no problem, go home. If he is a star in the making, I don't want to see the rejects.

suzanne Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

Jason did a great job last night! He stayed true to himself and that is perfect as far as I am concerned. the judges loved Brook'es second song because she was herself, why not Jason?? I am tired of David A.

John Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST

Neil Diamond is Great for being Neil Diamond. Jason Castro is great for Jason. I am hoping that Idol stops asking each singer to sing a song from an artist they don't identify with. Let them select a song from a broader category so they can pick something that is even close to their style. I agree that David Cook has done a great job of changing the song and making it his own. It is perhaps something that Jason and the other idols are not as strong at yet.

Big fan Jason. Stay true to yourself and your emotions and style.

longal82 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

"This is hard"?? What is hard Paula, being plucked out of The land of Has-Beens and being paid over a million dollars to be an American Idol Judge, basically just give your opinion. And she can't even do that right! I know that for the past few seasons Paula's Zaniness has kind of been cute and an expected part of AI. But how can they possibly continue to employ her as a judge anymore? She had a very small amount BUT now she has ZERO credibility left! The contestants and the american public deserve much, much better!!

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

To Rich M...are you that naive to think that all the singers who make it have a great range...oh please! They sing songs that work in their range. Reminder..This is not a singing competition, this is a star making exercise. I'm not a brainless, teenage girl either, so my defense of Jason is based on what I see as his star potential...which is intangible. By the way Jason is not the only singer to mimic other singers versions of hit songs..David C has done that as well. Jason is unique and interesting and I think he got a bum deal last night. By the way, I'd much rather watch him than David A...now that is mind numbing.

Stephanie T. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

Yep, Jason has a case if he's axed. But Paula is just plain goofy.

Dawn Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

Jason could have a case against the show if he goes tonight. But, this probably won't happen. I feel bad for the guy...I like him, he's unique.

Leigh Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

If Paula cannot remember what 5 singers did in the previous 30 minutes, it really is time for her to be replaced.

Daisy Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:57 PM EST

Good grief...How boring it would be if everybody liked the same music. My favorite is Jason Castro...If those of you that don't like Jason's voice think that those of do, don't have any taste in music, then hallelujah! That is what makes the world go round. He has been my favorite since day one and I feel bad for the guy to have to sing right after Paula slammed him...And so what that he sings songs the way they were written, maybe he hasn't learned how to arrange music yet, he has only been singing for a few years. I enjoy him.

Diane Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

I would not be surprised if Nigel gets fired after this. How transparent and how insulting to us, the American audience. Maybe Nigel should go back to producing the Muppets.

Paula A. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

I hope I cleared things up...and life is beautiful....while the sky is blue....and, uh, and, why, why, we...why can't we all just get along.

Robin Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

Last night just proved to me what has been becoming more and more obvious over the past few weeks...the show is fixed, or at the very least, manipulated. Aside from what happened to Jason last night, it seems to me that he has been getting the shaft over the past few weeks as well. I'm not saying his performances have been the best (though certainly not awful), however his clips with the mentors, seem to have been edited to show him rather negatively. For example, last night, he was shown getting the lyrics wrong with Neil Diamond and the most Neil could say was something to the effect of "maybe he'll be more comfortable by the time he performs these songs and do ok." Whereas, David Cook (who I do like) is shown giving Neil "goosegumps." Plus, when Ryan reads the numbers after the performance, it feels like he is on speed or fast forward for some of the performers. I thougt David A. was by far the most karoake and cheesy of the bunch. At any rate, the producers screwed up.

Leila Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

If Jason leaves tonight they'll lose my household's viewership. Not having Michael and Carly was bad enough, and now David Cook alone won't be enough to make me suffer through more awful performances by the FDLSs.

Leuc Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

The show and paula owe Jason an apology tonight. I felt terrible for him that he had to perform right after that disaster--how embarrassing and crushing. Not cool

Jason, you could have done a lot better tonight-- I'll be buying your CD though-- You're the only real one in the whole bunch.

jade Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

Last week's editing of the ALW clip, not mentioning Jason was sick, Simon saying don't vote and then backtracking saying it is a democracy vote if you want. Randy never shutting up last week for one second when any of the judges were talking to him, and this week's scripted criticism, all adds up to one thing... SABOTAGE

To Beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

I doubt I would like it better if he sang his own songs, b/c I have no reason to think that he would sing them any differently. He's a limited singer and has been given ample opportunity to stretch himself, but has been failing time and time again. As for Hallelujah, sure, I enjoyed it ... when it was released by Jeff Buckley 14 years ago. He sang it EXACTLY THE SAME WAY, so I don't see where all the praise was due. As for his "beautiful bedroom doe eyes," I'm not a brainless teenage girl, so I must be missing an important point there.

KG Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

i've never missed an episode since i started watching in season one. the one night i miss it, THIS happens!

hilarious! thank God for video streaming!

Paula A. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

In my defense, the producers changed how we would give our comments. I was caught off guard with my notes out of order. I thought we were heading to a commercial and I was organizing my comments to be given after the second song. It was live television and anything can happen. If I was given notice during Jason's song, I would've been properly prepared. It was unfortunate and will not sway how America votes. The American public realizes mistakes happen and are very forgiving and will vote for their favorites. Thank you.
(prepared for Paula by Nigel)

Hiccup Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

"I'm druuuuuunk...!" Please... give ME the money Paula gets and I'll write coherent notes.

Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

For those of you that are Jason fans, I downloaded "Forever in Blue Jeans" from iTunes and it is what looks like a mixture of the rehearsal and the live version...About 49 seconds into it, the shot of the judges is really them and then about a minute into it, the shot of the judges is clearly not them. The "Randy" sit-in is dancing in his seat, which is what caught my attention because we all know how Randy feels about Jason...And "Paula's" hair was down and looked red and "Simon", well he is blonde ... Nigel maybe? Not that it is a big deal, it is still a great performance...Just found it interesting ...

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

To all of you who hate Jason Castro...while his singing does not have the range needed for this stupid, insipid, mentor series thing that Nigel continues to offer up every week, I'll bet you would like his music better if he were allowed to sing his own song choices. Did any of you download Jason's "hallelujah" or "somewhere over the rainbow"...they were great, bankable songs from Jason. it is time that Idol get rid of the useless mentor weeks in the competition...singing Neil Diamond throw backs well doesn't make you a star. By the way, the reason Jason is still around is because those beautiful bedroom doe eyes of his are star quality.

Elisheva Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

We all know from reports from the studio audience that certain segments of the show are taped out of sequence. Couldn't it be that Ryan's request for comments on the first number was taped after the second song was sung and Paula got confused?

Marti Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

Makes me wonder what is going on, and if comments are scripted ahead of time. For me, it makes me unsure about the integrity of the whole show. Also, I think Jason got a raw deal having to sing right after Paula made her "mistake" and had already judged his second song before he even sang. No wonder he looked awkward, and unsure of himself. What an awful situation. I'm not sure I even care to see who is the "next American Idol. I think all of them (the remaining contestants) will do fine in their careers anyway.

Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

Ya know, I wonder what the show would be like if the judges stopped "judging" once we got to the semifinals. Let the audience decide for themselves without any assistance from idiots.

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

Can't wait to see tonight's show...they already had Paula call in to Ryan's radio show to correct her error and pretend she just got confused. Nygel must be peeing in his pants and the spin doctors heads are going to spin off like a top on this one. I wish the foxinsider from earlier in this blog would start blogging again with more juicy details...Actually Nygel probably found him and axed him by now. Seriously, can you just hear the FOX machine churning with the spin on this blunder. If you thought last night's script was out of control...just wait till tonight...this is delicious.

Paula A. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:27 PM EST

What I meant to say was.....that your charm did not...with your inner beauty..but on the 2nd song be true to the gifted soul...with all the colors of the rainbow..while the sun rises..don't let it go down...as I said before..you must be daring...let the sword fly...fill the cup until it runneth over..by the way I love what your wearing..in the groove and your hair is beautiful...shine a light on me and, and, and, and, keep doing what you're doing.

Rich M. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:26 PM EST

To Chris and all you other Jason Luvvahs, the writing is on the wall. Conspiracy theories notwithstanding, its time the dreadlocked boy started packing his bags. His whispered, breathy, stoned delivery wore out its charm A LONG TIME AGO. Week in, week out, its the same thing, always in that limited range of his. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Buh-bye.

Big Fat Greek Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

Whatever Paula was smoking I'm sure she got it from Castro. The two are the biggest dimwitted meat heads on the show. Whenever I look at Castro, his eyes are a big blank stare.

jenny Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

Slezak has been proved correct, I felt it too from last week. My family told me I am wrong, when I said then hurled Jason off the cliff last week, but now they see what I have been saying, nothing is stopping them getting their David/David finale. Go the main board, Jason has the most posts, they are scared. The instructions from above have been to get Jason off. They tried last week and failed and they were told to make sure they all slammed and insulted him this week

JRBear Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

Finally! The real Paula cannot be covered up. Get that crazy drug addled no talent 'train wreck' off the stage. What a great role model?
"This is hard?" It's frickin easy for any normal person. I saw Hef's 'Girls Next Door' sitting right behind the judges. They are brainless blonds; sign up one of them.

stacy Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

It started last week, first when they show ALW saying how a guy chose that song, and a dreadhead, very derisively, and then when Paula said to Simon "It was what he chose to do", yet to David Cook, Simon said, You did what you could with the song you were GIVEN. Then Ryan says "scripted by the producers, "So let's go back just for a secondto our own resident glamour puss,Simon in the context of this song and in this theme how do you vote", and "Simon replies, YOU DON'T."Well, I wouldn't, then goes on to say it is a democracy you have a choice. But the message is there to the public, DON'T VOTE FOR HIM. And if you watch that clip on you tube, Randy never stops butting in during their critiques as well. The brief went out 'GET RID OF JASON". How Jason was supposed to sing his second song well, after that, I don't know. Guess what, I am actually wanting David Cook to win, but this treatment of Jason, is totally wrong and reeks of manipulation.

To "Nigel L": Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

Maybe if Nigel Lythgoe respected the American audience more things like the "Paula Debacle" would not be an issue. Honesty and running a competition fairly is the best policy. Otherwise, go back to producing the Muppets.

conspiracy theorist Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

So ... if the show is rigged and this is Jason's week to leave, can they honestly send him home now? I mean, they would almost have to keep him around (at least one more week) after "Paulagate," right? I admit, I am a huge fan of his and voted for him an insane number of times last night because a) I thought his first song was pretty good (his second not so much, but can you blame him after that?) and b) the thought of an all-David final totally depresses me. So really, if Jason is supposed to leave this week "according to the script," they'd have to call an audible and send home Brooke or Syesha now or else it would be just too obvious the whole thing is totally rigged. (I apologize if this has been brought up before -- I don't feel like reading all the previous comments.)

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

To Bob from Ft Lauderdale: I think Paula is an absolute necessity in this 3 ring circus...she provides the softer, loony, drug addled mothering insight and Simon presents the hard truth...Randy provides nothing...he's just riding this fame and getting rich off his album. His insights are useless...seriously if he says..dog, that's the bomb, flaming bomb, red hot bomb or any of his other useless David A. suck-ups, I think I'll gag.

NorthwestIdolFan Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

Remember in the 1950's they had the "Quiz Show" scandals...i'm just sayin' - How about the Government - looks into all of these "reality shows" and the voting. I still enjoy the peformances - however - i am quite skeptical - about the vote-counting,etc.- and I think the winners are all pre-determined by the show producers. This includes Dancing with the Stars and also "So you think you can dance" btw

D. Dawn Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

I think it is time for American Idol to take a break. Of course, the show and votes are fixed. We all know David C. is going to win....so why should we even watch it anymore. I am tired of Paula babbling about nothing. I don't even understand what she is trying to say. She looks drugged half the time. Shame on American Idol.....your time in the spot light is over!!!

D. Dawn Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:58 PM EST

Jason knew what happened, what's been happening for the last week or so - he's being thrown under the bus on the orders of Nigel Lythgoe. Nigel did it on the UK Idol show, which is mired in scandal, and he's trying it here. Paula couldn't have been more obvious if she's turned around in her seat and asked Nigel to decipher his handwritten notes she was trying to read from. And how was Jason supposed to "act normal" when he already knew that no matter how well he sang he was gonna get slammed? Is rigging a "vote in" show even legal?? Helloo, FCC?

i'm not buying it Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

Oh, and hey, where's my behind the scenes blog? This wasn't enough!

i'm not buying it Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

If we're all supposed to be cynical enough to accept that the show is rigged, then I don't want to watch it. They've promoted this "heartfelt" concept of amatuers becoming stars with our help. If that's not the real deal, then I don't want to play.

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

To Nigel L...of course there are other more serious issues in the world, however, they aren't as much fun as blogging about an AI conspiracy. If you want to discuss serious issues...I suggest you go to the Presidential election blog sites and get bored. For now, those of us who can't pay for gas are writing while sitting on our out-of-work behinds.

Bob from Ft.Lauderdale Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

Ya gotta admit, this Paula thing makes for great TV. Methinks she's over medicated and can't think on her feet when thrown something out of the norm. That said, she does have a good heart, every now and then says something that has insight and is constructive. However, I think she needs to be replaced with someone with some more recent successes. Someone with strong and smart insights. Someone who is encouraging yet truthful and not afraid of hurting feelings of the idols. It's a tough business and tough love is needed. Someone bright enough to come back at Simon too when needed. I don't think that this is fixed. It's clear she just blundered. But I'm over her pretty much.

beamer Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:48 PM EST

Sounds like some of you just had lunch and the blood has left your head...do you seriously believe this show is not pre-scripted and the results are not pre-planned? Sounds like you post-lunchers drank the cool-aid. Poor Paula is now being touted as the scapegoat...it's not her fault she just happened to let the cat out of the bag. If Ryan/Debbie/Nygel had stuck to their script, Paula would not have been called on to comment at that point in the show. After all Ryan had said that the comments would come at the end after all ten songs. When the producers found that they had rushed the show too much, they found themselves with some additional time on their hands...thus they advised Ryan to make the audible. Paula obviously was not prepared to read the pre-planned script at that point, thus she read too far down the page. She is an air-head, but this was an inadvertent blunder on her part. The fact that there was a script should tell you that the cat was "let out of the bag by accident"

Chris Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

Mara,

I couldn't agree with you more. AI did a grave misjustice to Jason last night and should be ashamed of themselves. I felt absolutely appalled by their obvious, calculated favortism for the two Davids (who were by the way, both mediocre at best last night). I felt both embarrassed and mortified for Jason. He too is by far my favorite and when he's gone, so am I-for good.

Darlene Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

PLEASE get rid of Paula. She only gets worse every week. Why are they keeping her on the show. I can't stand to hear her talk anymore. I'm already considering NOT watching next season because of her and I've seen 6 of the 7 years it's aired. It SHOULD come down to a David C./Syesha final but I'm thinking it's fixed also, especially after last night's fiasco.

Nigel L. Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

Why is everyone making such a big deal over this? There are many more issues in the world to be upset about. This is nothing but publicity, crap entertainment, and money in the pockets of all connected to AI.

Tully Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

What a blunder from Paula! She must have been distracted and read her notes from watching the contestants' rehearsal. No matter what, her "before-time" critiques were quite accurate in regards to Jason's performances. Jason seemed more emotionally detached as he got further into his songs. He looked tired as if it's-ok-I-don't-mind-going-home. I still think Jason is wonderful though.

NotAPlant Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

Folks, American Idol is rigged. The voting is not being counted by an independent group, it's done by Fox. Your votes never counted. It's fake, just like the WWE!

nicole wilke Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

Jason Castro deserves an apology from the judges and the producer for what happened last night. His 1st performance was brilliant and he was critiqued on his 2nd performance before he had a chance to sing it. There is no way I would be able to keep my composure the way Jason did, if I knew that the judges had already decided before the show that I was not their winner. JAson, leave Idol now. Your fans will support you even more if you leave. You are better than all of them.I don't believe you choked, I believe in your own way you were upset at what you had just learned.

Allison Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

And they are NOT rigging it for a David-David final two. If they were they wouldn't have given the pimp spot to Syesha!

Mary Lynn Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

I don't feel sorry for Paula. She is an admitted "recovering" drug addict and alcoholic and it just appears that she's a bit slow on spontaneous directions OR she has been missing her meetings. If anyone has "ever" thought that this show was NOT rigged, all I need to say is take a good, long look at Clay Aiken. Puleez! An Idol?

Allison Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

Oh please. Calm down everyone! Paula just did Jason a FAVOR!!! 1.she gave him even more motivation to make his performance good(which he didn't)2. he has gotten thousands of sympathy votes because of this 3.there is a chance no one will get eliminated tonight, giving him another week he might not have gotten before. Everyone needs to just get over it.

Carrie Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:30 PM EST

Rigged for a David Duel , but Syesha has thrown them for a loop , they keep trying to get her out ...but she is good and the public knows it ...we are not as dumb as Paula. Syesha,You go girl!
I just hope she is safe tonight just to show Simon he cannot manipulate the voting . I have became a fan of hers since MJ left and Carly (true talent)and she is getting better . She was the best last night over all. David A was terribly dull, and they are pushing him to win.GAG!!!

dashing4 Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

It was obvious that Paula's notes were written by someone else. They made too much sense. And the whole part about "you're not trying hard enough to be in the final 4" sounded like Simon or Randy. I mean Paula stuck up for Jason after he sang "Memory". Its not like her to say at least one thing nice first!! Come on, Randy, admit you let her get lit if she agreed to read your notes.

Marcy Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

I think the worst part of this was the fact that Jason had to stay on the stage afterwards, absorb what happened and then perform the same song he was just ripped to shreds on. Furthermore, they should stop doing theme shows at final 6, and let these people choose whatever song they want from then on. That's the part of the show that's certainly scripted and it's entirely unfair. Grassy Knoll TPTB meeting: "ALW week followed by Neil Diamond week-- the singer/songwriter contestants wont stand a chance. Randy will love both weeks though because all he cares about are big notes." Grrr.. I'm so done with this show.

This was the most confusing idol show ever.It felt so rushed and disorganized. The judges comments were limited, first we were told the judges were only going to comment at the end and then they did that really strange line up in the middle. No wonder Paula was confused!!
I think FOX screwed up big by trying to cram that show into 1 hour.It just was not enjoyable. By doing 2 Neil Diamond songs it was actually like having 10 singers.Did they do 10 singers in 1 hour?NO! So why did the producers think they could do 10 songs in 1 hour. They should have done 1 group song and then one song from each person or make it a longer show.Actually isn't one Neil Diamond song enough for anyone! Don't get me wrong, I love Neil, but to make a bunch of teens to twentys sing Neil is weird. It is becoming a "who can take an old outdate
