On the Scene: Mariah night on American Idol

Apr 16, 2008, 09:03 AM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: American Idol

Davidcook_l Seems hard to believe, PopWatchers, but I don't think I've been to Idol since Amanda Overmyer was voted off. You'll be shocked, I'm sure, to hear that not much has changed. Corey's still there, forcing strangers to booty-dance. Debbie the Stage Manager continues to shuffle around in her headset and cool hat. Americans of every shape and size are still getting their scream on when requested. For me -- a girl who spent a transcendent weekend watching Eddie Vedder dominate a non-blinding stage using nothing but a series of guitars and his legendary voice -- it was a bit like leaving Oz and heading back to Kansas, except louder, and with less farm implements. But I know you kids hate it when I bring that kind of downer talk to the table, so how about this: "AWWWW YEEEEAAAAAH!"

Let's hit the required setup and then get into the action:

1. People brought signs! My section featured "David Cook Takes the Cake" and "David Cooks," the latter featuring real forks and spoons glued around its border.

2. Celebrities were there! Ring up Teri Hatcher, Minnie Driver, and -- I think -- former Head of the Class star Dan Schneider, better known to this demographic as the producer of Zoey 101 and Drake & Josh. I was also somewhat dismayed to see David Hernandez and Ramiele Malubay in the crowd, creating quite the fustercluck of pre-teens swarming for autographs. Somewhere in my brain, a long lecture about dignity that tangentially involves the Real World/Road Rules Challenge cast is brewing, but I'll save that for another time.

3. There's a reason they don't call it "showFUN"! Once we'd all been coached within an inch of our lives -- clap! but not during ballads cause it's weird! but give everyone a standing ovation! but don't block the teleprompter with your sign! but get those arms above your head! -- Corey brought out the judges. This was rocky. First, Debbie made him stall, as the judges were clearly not ready, and then, when he introduced Simon, the Idols came out instead. There are so few of them left! The tiny group huddled together on the stage, Brooke's dress shimmying in the strobe lighting, Kristy Lee Cook bouncing merrily. And as the countdown began to the live broadcast, the crowd could yell but one thing: "Where's Paula?" The tiny purple people-pleaser was nowhere to be found as we counted down from ten, nine, eight -- "Where's PAULA??? the crowd yelled louder -- seven, six, five -- Debbie is strangely calm -- four, three, "WHERE IS PAULA?!?!?" they shrieked -- two... Oh, thank god, there she is, tottering in on heels twice her height, and mounting the platform just as Ryan began the show. Aaaaand, THIS was tonight's American Idol (after the jump)...

After Ryan scolds us all for not voting and thereby leading Michael Johns to his untimely doom, the Idols are introduced to a nice standing ovation. The Mariah montage begins as Nigel -- who is sporting a big blue cast on his right arm for reasons Google cannot clarify -- Debbie, and Ryan frantically discuss something on stage. When Archie gets introduced, the screams are nowhere near as deafening as I remember, but that's possibly because I had my earplugs in from the get-go this time, and the revelation that he's singing "When You Believe" (hey, Happy Passover, America!) comes as a shock to exactly no one. During the performance, some of the "moshers" begin to sway their arms, but cannot seem to get a quorum for that, so they give up. Mostly it seems the ladies of the "pit" are just standing in awe, though probably not of Archie's leather pants. Song finishes, the judges love it, blah blah blah -- keep an eye out for my forthcoming anger blog, ThereIsClearlyAConspiracyToMakeDavidArchuletaTheNextAmericanIdol.com -- and then it's revealed the child doesn't eat on performance days. Well, no wonder he looks younger than Miley Cyrus. Poor puppy!

During the first break, Corey has the world's most boring conversation with a six year old, and Ryan and Carly laugh it up on the space stools. Nigel and some of the judges are talking to a distinguished TV executive type, but since I wasn't sitting next to LA Times writer and eternal font of information Richard Rushfield this time out, I've no clue who that dude was. When it comes time for Carly to perform, I make sure to wooooooooo! at the top of my lungs to make sure that Nigel and the TV exec man hear it and reconsider their evil master plan to elect a puppy king, but based on the judges' blasé comments after the Irish lass blew the doors off of "Without You," I doubt it did much good. Still, Carly, I screamed for you. And I just don't scream at these things, my dear.

Break Two, and someone in an argyle sweater is following Paula around. Good thing -- she's having trouble walking in those heels. Meanwhile, Simon's lady friend person shows up as he's ducking out for a smoke, and he sarcastically looks at his watch, then walks away. (So warm!) Ryan emerges with a pretty blond thing following him into the "pit," where he sets up for the next shot; you could see this girl on TV, standing to his right as he introduced Syesha, smiling and looking at him with moony eyes. And when that shot finished, she followed him right back out the door. I do not know who this pretty blond thing was, but as my initially-competence-based but now dangerously-bordering-on-romantical affection for the stylings of Mr. Seacrest grows ever stronger, I'd strongly caution her against making the moves on my man.

Break Three, and Brooke White is seated at the piano, warming up for her charmingly horrific version of "Hero." Ryan soon comes to take her by the hand and guide her to the stools, where she put her heels back on in time to totally botch that story about her sister's wedding and the cardboard cutout. (Seriously, Brooke: The cardboard cutout was a cute factoid. You could have just let us go on believing. I hardly think your family would have sold you out on that one. Also, while I'm giving you tips, darling, in the future, should you have one, please refrain from singing songs that terrify you so badly I can see your curly head shaking like a Pekingese from all the way in Section D.) The crowd seemed sort of sad for Brooke -- although damn, do those people ever love it when folks sing high! -- but Simon immediately turned our frowns upside down with his "Can I speed you up?" comment amidst Paula's ramble about how Brooke needn't rush.

Refreshingly, KLK was permitted to follow sans commercial, and I'm afraid I snorted awfully loud when Mariah tossed out "She delivered it well" as a compliment about that version of "Forever." (Why do I call her KLK? It's a palindrome, folks. Just let me have this one.) I frankly didn't thoroughly hate her performance, but I mostly hope she stays in the competition so that our video editor, Jason Averett, can continue to make absolutely brilliant Idolatry videos involving KLK as MechaGodzilla, a giant robot controlled by power-hungry Japanese men from the '70s. During her feedback, though, I found myself totally distracted and trying to determine what, if anything, Ryan is thinking when the judges talk. Meanwhile, my section was starting to get extra snotty about Paula, who had to be literally carried out of the room during the next commercial break after stumbling yet again.

Not sure what happened during this span of downtime, as there was a CBS page standing directly in front of me for most of it. I do know that Rami and David H. took off out the door, because Debbie barked, "David Hernandez and Ramiele, get back in here!" while trying to set up the next bumper, in which Ryan was, I guess, supposed to sit with the both of them. Of course, during this setup, Ryan was up in the bleachers, shaking the hands of little girls and high-fiving little boys and generally being a lovely host. Also, somewhere in here the woman across the aisle from me emphasized how much she and her daughter loved Brooke's performance. I promised her I'd make a note of that, and then was totally mean and ignored whatever she said next, because Debbie was counting down and David Hernandez was still not in his seat. In fact, he was allllll the way over by the door, lackadaisically wandering to his seat with a soda in his hand. Ten, nine, eight -- he starts to hustle -- seven, six, five -- no way in hell is he going to make it -- four, three, two -- Debbie forces him down in a chair out of the shot -- one, and Ryan and Ramiele are sitting on camera to introduce David Cook.

As D.Cook's montage gets underway, Ryan gets up to have his hair reconstructed after donning an audience member's hat, and I stare in wonder at the number of times that man must be groomed every day and ponder how much effect said grooming is having on my growing emotional attachment. And then David takes the stage, and someone turns on some sort of blazing white-laser fresnel, and it totally effing blinds me. I joke a lot about blindness in these reports, but I'm not kidding this time -- I'm staring at Ryan's head, and then all of a sudden it is replaced by pain. And thanks to that bright white light, I don't so much see David Cook's super-brilliant performance of "Always Be My Baby" as I more or less intuit its goosebump-inducing existence, and now I'm concerned that the blindness in my left eye is payback for having salacious thoughts about Ryan Seacrest. Either way, I try desperately to shake the spots so I can fully appreciate D.Cook's success, his subsequent tears, and the way Seacrest gave him a giant thumbs-up after they cut to commercial.

Then something happened that I've never seen before: David came off the stage and straight out into the audience, ignoring the clamoring "moshers" to make a beeline for his cancer-stricken brother, Adam, who was seated behind the judging platform. Massive hugging ensued. This was, even for me, a really kind of amazingly touching moment, despite the fact that I thought David was just hugging his mother and uncle or something until after the show when Rushfield informed me that I should really try reading the Internet every once in a while. The judges greeted Adam warmly, and the three also give David a few more props: Simon pointing fondly in his face as if to say, "You. You were... magical"; Paula hugging him; Randy clasping his shoulder very sincerely. During this tissue-worthy drama, much of the crowd was occupied by Corey, who was presenting a miniscule boy with his very own signed copy of Guitar Hero.

Before Jason Castro closed out the night, Debbie and Ryan set up the "Simon for President" sign that Ryan would later rip in half. And during Castro's luau, I looked over to see Nigel dancing with his one good hand, having apparently now accepted the dreadlocks as something little girls will, in fact, pay good money to enjoy. As Simon applauded Jason's work, Ryan sat on a stool off to the side, gesturing in agreement when the Brit proclaimed the guys had won the night. Then all the Idols took the stage for the recap montage, some dude actually came out to straighten Ryan's tie and his pants, KLK appeared to be (once again) consoling Brooke, Ryan signed off, saluted, and as soon as the cameras were off, he unbuttoned his suitcoat with a flourish and walked offstage, giving Debbie a wide-armed shrug as he passed.

Which summed up my reaction to the whole shebang rather perfectly. David Cook kicked ass, Carly was robbed of the praise she deserved, everyone else was kinda meh, in my opinion. What did you kids at home think? Did you know about the touching story of D.Cook's brother? Can you explain to me why audiences seem to relish the singing of contextually "high" notes over all other things, and if this is true, why it shows no corresponding effect on the mainstream career of, say, Björk? And would someone please suggest some sort of pill or salve I might employ to get over this stupid Seacrest crush?

amy Sun, Apr 27, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

The next to go is Castro-too stagnant & predictable. I hope Brooke can be more sensible & less emotional..it can drag u out of a competition like AI

amy Sun, Apr 27, 2008 at 10:03 AM EST

Definitely the show's loss without Carly, excellent vocal control & performances. Anyway, that not an awful arm tatoos, it's cool. Wish her all the best. Still supporting both Davids..cool

David Cook Sat, Apr 19, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

Thank you guys for voting for me and IM STILL IN THIS BABY!!!

You're so right about Carly. I really enjoyed her song Tuesday night. David Cook is my favorite, and I do want him to win, but Carly caught my attention when she and David Cook did such an amazing job on Shout to the Lord. Up until that point she had not really impressed me. Today I bought Carly's studio version of Without You and love it!

caterinea Fri, Apr 18, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

Hey, sleezjack. Get a grip!
I can't wait for the for the finale either. But I am afraid you will be disappointed I don't believe David Arculetta will even be in the finale. I think it will be Cook and Carly.

slezakduzintnojack Fri, Apr 18, 2008 at 07:56 AM EST

apparently u haven't met jack yet either...SIGH..another "cool" person riding on the DC wave...how original his performance was..bllah blah blah...as he screams once again..whips the mic stand once again...week after week after week...but it's not cool I guess to recognize David A's amazing vocal skills so let's bash him cuz he's young..HUH??? This competition is about age??? 'scuse me people...how old was Jordin Sparks last year?? Did anyone bash her for her age?? Time to get real...David A is a force, perhaps a young one, but a force to reckon with! Superior talent! Amazing control! Bring on the finale!

CynthiaBlueSprings! Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 11:08 PM EST

I am so excited about going to AI Live next week!!
I am from the same town as Dave Cook (KC area) and I REALLY want to meet him in Hollywood!
Dave Cook...amazing. His MJ remake ...I stood up and gave him a standing ovation! I know he'll come back to KC since he'll be in the top 3-better hit the P & L District and ask for me!

David Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

Who cares what you had for breakfast. We're talking about AI

Robin Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

I had a salad a Chop't. Delicious!

Cynthia Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

I had bacon for breakfast this morning.

Tully Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

...a "Seacrest crush"? Oh I love your humor. If you talked about Michael J. crush, that would be real trouble. The judges were fair, I thought Carly's "Without You" was discordant but she was quite amazing on Dolly night. As for "high" notes, audience gets excited because they can hear the singer better with all the annoying noise from the pit. Can the producers ever get rid of that pit?!

La-La94 Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

i loved what david cook did with that song! he is the best person to ever set foot on american idol. the arcticle i put below shows what a great person he is too! he has a beautiful voice and is incredible! he is deffinately ready to make an album and i'm going to buy it! and all the others after it!
he will be a hit!

Tully Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

Besides their talents, we have a bunch of good-looking contestants this Season, especially on the boys side. Their looks, voices and personalities are so well defined, which make the Season interesting to watch. Every single one of them could record a very good cd, but my honest choice for AI has to be David Archuleta.

La-La94 Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

ok well i am 13 years old & so are my friends!
8/9 of them dont like david a!
they have their own favorites
read this:
I had a great conversation with David Cook. We were hanging out by the coffee machine, just chatting. He seemed so down to earth, so real⿿ such a genuine person. You don't always get that when you are talking to these kids who are getting their first taste of fame. During that conversation, I mentioned to David that he was my daughter's favorite contestant this year. She asks me about him every week. As soon as I told David about Lindsey Rose-- and about the fact she's fighting cancer right now, and how he was her favorite-- he immediately said, "Can I call her? I'd love to say hello." I had wristbands made up with that motto on it for her family and friends to wear as a sign of support. I showed the orange wristband to David Cook and he immediately said, "Can I please have one?"
He has worn it ever since.
its little bits of an article i found

BoricuaKC Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

Here I go again but it's nice to see others see the same thing I have seen (read Chris Sligh's blurb "Is Archuleta overpraised"). David A has got skills but they are VERY limited. Hey is a boy, who needs to show the world that he CAN do something other than ballads. If the mentors were Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Annie Lennox, or even Ricky Martin (with a Shake your Bon Bon feel) the boy would flop. If there were to be Rock week he would find a rock ballad to hide behind.

Though if you think about it this shtick is working for him he's yet to be in the bottom 3. I miss last season's Melinda Doolittle she proved one thing she CAN do it ALL and thats what David A needs to prove that he CAN do it all. But at the rate that he's going he'll be starring in high School Musical 10.

C'mon David you can do. Show us that you are an artist not just a 21st century Bing Crosby.

Ava Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

Just found this site. Thanks for providing this outlet. My family loves David A. Each time I see him perform, I feel the pride of a mother. I think he will get the votes from the young girls as well as the "moms". Another contender for the votes from the teen girls is Jason. David C. is a top performer and I in no way think his brother is fast-forwarding his cancer to bring the sympathy vote for David.(That's basically what some of those posting have implied.) My vote is for David A.

Rockwello Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

Totally disagree with you on Cook-he is just another poser to me-I dislike the tone of his voice also

Amanda Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 12:09 PM EST

Keep your Seacrest flame burning bright! I think it's hilarious. I adore him too, although I wouldn't call it a "crush." I've been angry with him but this post has restored my love.

To Whitney P. from Crazy Russian Music Man Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 11:29 AM EST

My dearest Whitney!

I love your snarkyness (not a word, but it fits you. When I watch Idol I am always wondering about the behind the scenes doings, expecially on the result nights. I am a performer and I am a stage personality on stage and/or when the camera points at me. Everybody's "on" during the broadcasted portions of the show. Interesting to think about their real personalities for me.

I thought KLC was terrible and should have left the night David H. did, but she has spunky personality -- from these articles, it seems that she has a sarcastic side too. And she was improving. She should not have been there, but she made the very most of it for herself. Not everyone can do this. Perhaps the advantage of making an album already helped her with strategy. She did what she had to do -- no question.

Whitney, love your sharp eye and tongue, your style and tone. Very interesting and entertaining. ANTM articles too. I wish you everything good.

Dosvedanya, druzya!

Isabella Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 10:02 AM EST

OK OK No the top 10 do not need to form a band because they all are not that great...My favorits are David cook he is my number 1 David A. and Carly the others can go. I love David C. he has a quality of his own I love the way he changes the song and wow what stage presents,I am sorry but none of the contestants do that especially Syesha she wants to be like everyone else boring...David I love you but you are more of a Disney Attraction no stage presents at all but you do have an amazing voice so one thing I can say give a better stage presents instead of standing there show them what you have I know that you can do it, it is not all about how you sing but how you look and what you can do on stage. I am a performer (singer) and I do get nervouse at times but I give it my all and I sing with heart and I show them what I have.. God Bless all of you....GOOD LUCK :)

lola Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 10:00 AM EST

Pill or salve? Hmm. That's a tough one. How about his cruel, coldblooded elimination of Michael Johns last week? Or his classic "division" tactics this week, when he split the group in 2? Or his general all-around idiocy? The rude comments he keeps making to Simon? His stupid little chuckling laugh? Shall I go on?

Shy Vy Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

I hate to say this, but Little Archie is boring. My parents and a lot of tweenieboppers may disagree, but I cannot listen to this kid sing. It's the same schlop every week! Anything other than a soppy ballad newt week, please!

kimo Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 08:14 AM EST

I hope that the people who are attacking David A. are not doing that on behalf of any other contestant, I enjoy the perdormance of all the top ten, and sincerely hope that they would forn a band under the name TOP TEN. Best wishes for all,

Fritz Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 05:22 AM EST

Love the column Whitney! I don't need someone re-hashing what I watched on Tuesday night, or giving me their opinion of the singing I myself listened to. No, what I need is the snark and details of a WP at the show.

thanks

adinnah Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 03:20 AM EST

In the beginning of the season, my favorite contestant was always David A. He became my favorite when he sang "better shop around". "Imagine" only solidified his positions as my favorite. Sadly, in the past couple of weeks I have been, dare I say it, slightly tired of the ballads. I would love to hear him sing a love song. No one can deny his ability to infuse every song he sing with sincere and raw emotion.
Also, Before David A. came along, my all time favorite contestant was Fantasia Barrino. But, even as I watched her perform on AI I knew in my heart that I probably wasn't going to buy her cd. I have never brought a single cd from an AI contestant. The moment David A. sang "Imagine", I decided that I was going to buy his cd if he ever produced one. In fact, I can hardly wait.
(Admittedly, the judges are being too easy on him)

H-squared Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 03:00 AM EST

Why are all the judges' comments for Carly so unenthusiastic, and even downright mean? Has she caused them some personal injury? I just don't understand how week after week all three of them can heap sickening amounts of undeserved praise upon David Archuleta and not even acknowledge Carly for the effort she puts into her performances, let alone her superior singing ability. Throw the girl a frickin' bone! And her lack of confidence? Maybe that wouldn't be such a problem if they gave her just a little bit of the praise she deserves! I think it's time for new judges who aren't completely drugged up, extremely biased, or just plain stupid.

hk Thu, Apr 17, 2008 at 02:42 AM EST

Michael John should be the top three.

http://tvwatch.people.com/2008/04/14/david-cooks-ailing-brother-will-attend-idol-shows/#comment-67931 http://www.tribstar.com/archivesearch/local_story_104225908.html I knew David Cook’s brother would be in the audience due to a number of articles! Brain cancer is a horrible, terrible thing. I was mortified at some of the cruel comments following the article. One lady wrote, “I feel like David is milking this to try to use it to his advantage, and that is just wrong.” His brother being ill only came to light after David was rushed to the hospital with heart issues … hardly an advantage, I’d say!

jennab Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:33 PM EST

Whitney, don't feel bad about it. He's adorable and much smarter than he's given credit for. I'm from LA and used to listen to him on Star 98, pre-Idol...he was SO funny, very fast and self-depracating...made fun of his metrosexuality. I dig him, too!

LISTEN UP Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:57 PM EST

For those of you reprimanding the David Cook haters and their stupid 'sympathy vote' theories...Why are you giving these nutjobs the time of day on this blog? They love the attention.
Don't give them the satisfaction of knowing someone is actually reading the garbage they write on here.
Ignore.
Oh yeah, and David C. ROCKS!

Hey: Donut44 Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:47 PM EST

Aww, lighten up, Donut. There has to be 2 sides to every story. Pastorek's telling the side a lot of us want to hear. Not everyone is in love with AI. It's refreshing to hear a bit of sarcasm aimed at this monster.

caterinae Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:43 PM EST

And I think all these Archuleta fans are probably as weird and strange as he is... yuck and what was with the leather pants. He always looks like he is going to cry when Ryan is talking to him. What the heck is wrong with that kid? And not to mention his weird raspy or would you call it airy voice. uugh

Whatev, previous poster. Whitney your column rocks the casbah, I laughed out loud twice.

mgr Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:05 PM EST

your write-up was hillarious. a nice read from someone who doesn't take the show too seriously and watches it with some levity, as it is just a tv show after all.

i agree that archuleta is overrated. he obviously appeals to the clay aiken/jonas brother obsessive type-fans. he's a boring balladeer with the voice of a husky woman. or rather, sounds like a woman with a husky voice.

Assignment Editor Take Note Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:03 PM EST

Whitney, you are far and away the best of the "On The Scene" writers. The details you choose to provide (the grooming of Ryan, David Hernandez's late return to his seat, Paula's problems with her pumps), genuinely give the reader insight to what an AI taping is like. Keep up the good work, and get your assignment editor to send you every week. I look forward to your website uncovering the conspiracy to make David WhiteBreadEta the next AI. WTF?

Donut44 Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:32 PM EST

I can't see much reason in even reading anymore of your article. You are a worthless writer and I can not imagine why EW has you writing for AI after your intro. It is like me going to cover a baseball game and telling everyone how I hate baseball and quit watching it when the Cardinals lost the 1987 world series. Then I proceed to give my two cents like I am worth something. You need to quit and go write about bad cover band artists who perform in hole in the wall booze joints in the middle of nowhere.

alter Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST

David C's performance last night was not the best of the season (contrary to what Randy said). It was not bad but definitely not his best. I agree to some extent that he is predictable in his arrangements - in that I now know what to expect from him - but i suppose he still changes up the songs radically enough to make them memorable. David A. has a nice voice and is quite sweet. True he is a little boring and one dimensional AND him winning Idol is too predictable and expected.

Carly.. I don't know. She has a great voice but there always seems to be something missing when she sings. She doesnt know how to connect to the audience at all and is too technical. Her best was 'Here you come again'. 'Without you' was just a repeat of Mariah's version - sort of.

I think Jason is the one (dark horse) capable of messing up the top 3. If he plays his cards well and steps it up even more, he could even make the top 2. I dont think he'll win but if he did, it would be interesting.

jim walker Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

My favorite is still David Cook. But I think he will be coming in second to David A who at this point I believe deserves to win.

jim walker Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

billy Bob I could not agree with you more..I can’t believe all of the bad, ugly things that have been written about David A.. Since the 4th week most writers have been saying how boring David is only being able to sing ballads and that would fall down if he tried an upbeat song. The 1st week he sang ‘Shop Around’ an upbeat song. He had great stage presence and received the best comments of the night from the judges. Oh what short memories everybody seems to have. The second week sang ‘Imagine’. Blew the judges away, blew me away. And every since that performance, it seems everyone has been trying to find things to put David down about. I can only believe that either fans are mad because David has taken the contest away or that they can not admit that a 17 year old can have so much talent. The truth is David has made the best song choices, has sang with the most maturity and has shown as much if not more versatility then any other contestant this year.

Jim Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:36 PM EST

One way to tell David Archuleta is on the fast track to super stardom is he already has his haters. If he wasn't good noone would bother to take shots at him. Also, I disagree with the charge that Archuleta is not picking his own songs. I've seen interviews with him and he said clearly he is picking his songs, and seemed truthful. Just because he's singing more mature songs doesn't mean he's not picking them. Lots of young people like John Lennon, and 80's music, and older music. Here is another good blog that talks about the David Archuleta situation http://jviz.blogspot.com/2008/04/young-stars.html

Baby Laura Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:08 PM EST

I have 3 words for all you Archie bashers: Jeal OH See

I am really fed up with EW constantly bashing David Archuleta, esp. Michael Slezak and, most recently Chris Sleigh. Chris Sleigh, no, really? I mean REALLY? Like you are one to judge. Right. Before I go further please let me assure you I am neither a teen, a tween, or a granny. I think David A. is a huge talent and I want him to win it all. David C.'s performance last night was weird and mumbly. David A. is the whole package and you'll be hearing from him, win or lose. BTW...I would love to compare David A's paycheck in 2-3 yrs. with Sleeeezak's. Enough said.

I take it you're not a rocker. I think Archuleta's choices and style are carefully chosen but not by him.

bird Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 07:22 PM EST

That KLC/MechaGodzilla stuff is a riot. Keep up the good work.

Denise Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 07:18 PM EST

David Archuleta has been great right from the beginning. Quality and inspirational songs are boring? Sure beats the manic displays we get from the rockers.

Joy Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

David Cook, hands down the best, but he should be voted off so he doesn't have to be tied to American Idol, just like Chris Daughtry!!!

Clovis Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

David Archuleta looks like a Hobbit which makes his real name Drogo Proudneck of Tuckborough

To caterinea- AMEN!! The people who say that David C was only trying to get sympathy votes?!!! Is that why he actually said anything during taping regarding his brother? Is that why nobody would have had any idea who that was had the media not picked up on it? Grow up and get a heart!! Seriously it's disgusting to even say that someone so genuinely emotional about a sensitive subject is trying to gain votes!! I am not even the guys biggest fan, however I was touched by his brother being there! Didn't make me jump up and vote for him, but I have to respect him as a person going through a tough time!! He deserves at least that respect!

DSL Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

We don't get to see all that you do... commercial break!! Loved David !!!!!!!!!!!! Think Carly is underrated and the rest overrated

caterinea Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 06:48 PM EST

Hey slezjack or whatever you name is, EW didn't bash David A. I did, if you want to call that bashing. I just don't like the little stange dude. Mr. goody goody Arculeta. God, give me a break no one that is 17 yrs old is that effing nieve and nice. Plus I just don't like his voice, he is not that good in my opinion. But hey, isn't it nice we live in America where we all can have an opinion? Peace...

Christine Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

David Archuleta definitely deserves to be there. He can SING. A lot of you bashers are ridiculous. It's not his fault that the press began to hype him up or that the judges do. I love David Cook--awesome performer, not as good of a singer. Both of them deserve it SO much and I love all the contestants. None of them deserve any kind of negativity.

caterinea Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

David Cook was not asking for a sympathy vote. His brother is very ill and he has not seen him in somtehthing like 3 months. If he wanted that kind of attention he would have mentioned it or had AI say something. This was very personal to him and the song I think reflected some of the feelings for his brother, eventhough it was a song to a female, if you listen you can imagine it being sung to someone that will be out of your life soon...Hence, the tears.
As far as the little twerp David A. I can hardly stand to watch him anymore. He is like totally weird! I cant stand to hear him talk and the singing is definately getting on my nerves, also. Yuck, I just dont like him.

David Cook made this song his and no one can accuse him of stealing someone else's arrangement. He did on his own and he is brillant. Not to mention best in show and also he is effing beautiful!

soundscene Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

I didn't get the judges praise for David C.'s performance. It was good, but not great. The arrangement was the same arrangement as "Hello," from the moody slowed-down melody to the big old rocker high notes at the end. Except he sang "Hello" better. I knew exactly how he would do this song before the show aired, so I'm not getting why he's so original? He's predictable--just in a different way than the other contestants. This wasn't even his personal best, much less best of the night. It seems obvious, however, that somebody really wants him to make it to the finale. That would be fine. In his niche he does well. But he's no second coming.

Clementine Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

I can't believe how mean people are on these message boards! To accuse David Cook of using his sick brother as a gimmick is beyond low. If he had wanted to use it, I'm sure he could have had Ryan mention it, much like we all knew about Brooke missing her sister's wedding. David Cook does not needs gimmicks because he has the most important thing to win this competition... talent.

kelley Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

If I'm not mistaken, the "pretty blond thing" with Ryan was Jaime Ray Newman -- she's a frequent TV guest star (she played Ed Begley Jr's cheating wife on Veronica Mars among other things).

wh Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

loved hearing about DC and his brother, and yeah, he kicked ass...

sabina Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

Hands down it was David Cooks nite. Carly sang her song beautifully and, for perhaps the first time in a long time, didn't seem so angry at the world. David A. is cute but definately not the AI for 2008. I almost wish he had waited a few years before auditioning. A little maturity would have helped him. I think we will see all 3 girls in the bottom 3 tonight, hopefully we'll say so long to Sy... Whitney, your blog was too funny, thanks. And I have to say, I love reading everyone's opinion on the night. Oh, to get rid of Ryan try hemorroidal cream. He's an ass.

Vote for DC Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

I love David Cook and think he's amazing. I read the story about his brother in the paper and spotted him at the very beginning of the show.
I was kind of surprised that they didn't say more about it but I thought it was really touching and really cool for the Cook Family.

Anyway if you love David Cook and want to know more about him you should visit this fan site made by some of his old high school buddies...
www.davidcooktheamericanidol.com

the list of 201 reasons makes me LOL!

Johnny Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 03:36 PM EST

Of course no one is going to say anything negative about Davids performance was. His brother was in the audience. Sad, get the sympathy vote and put the judges in a corner to force them not to give a honest critique. Dave C sounded like injured seal flopping on the beach. He needs to be gone.

Tuzo Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Based on David A's (day of non-) eating disorder, I fear that if he wins Idol he will probably die since he will no longer be able to eat for weeks at a time. I guess every cloud does have a silver lining. ;) That's a bit harsh but I'm OK with that.

Darlene Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

Yes, I DID know about David Cook's brother. It was a big story carried all over the country. I have nothing better to do on Mondays and Tuesdays than scour the intenet for crumbs of American Idol information while I wait for Tuesday night's competition to roll around.

I agree with you about Carly. I thought she was great. It's the first time she didn't do any screeching in her song, and I loved it.

I also enjoyed the songs done by the 3 guys.

Stef Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

Whitney, I have a perfect cure for the Seacrest crush. Watch the Soup - Joel McHale looks kinda like Ryan, but he is is funnier, taller and cooler than Seacrest. Much more crushworthy.

CookFan Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

I thought Ryan Seacrest was ambiguously gay! How is it that women are crushing on him, left and right? So, what's the final word? Which side of the fence does Ryan play on?

jean Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

I agree with you sophie & angela
the haters of david cook really need to read up on him to really find out what kind of person he is
I loved his preformance lastnite all the guys were good but david cook was #1
as the saying goes if you can't say nothing nice don't say anything at all
I don't really care for a few contestants but not going to bash them
so why don't you guys bashing DC GROW UP !!!!

Carly finally covered that awful arm tattoo .... now how does one go about and cover her husband? God, how does not go about and introduce him?? What was HE thinking? how druck or high was he when he decided to do his face too? Dear Lord!

pede Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

Even though I've believed this show was rigged from the start, if David A. wins over David Cook, I will NEVER watch again. But then what can you expect from a society full of teenagers who think that Miley Cyrus can actually sing? Talentless drones with no personalities or originality whatsoever. Hmm, yes, the David A. popularity is now making more sense to me...

orville Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:59 PM EST

It's ok Whitney. I have a sick little crush on Seacrest too. Maybe it's because he seems to have a thing for older women sometimes. We can form a support group--and maybe even get Teri Hatcher to join.

peaches Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

I just watched Kelly Clarkson's version of "Without You" from season 1 and I have to say Carly didn't do it justice.
I was surprised how normal Mariah was. Sometimes the girl seems a little, uhm, kooky and she seemed downright sane with the Idols. No, I wasn't expecting plate smashing or pre-printed pink index cards filled with catch phrases but there are moments when Ms Carey seems a tad strange. Last night she was a nice surprise, even if all the performances weren't amazing.

Laura Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

Whitney Whitney ........ Whitney! I have lost all respect for you. You can't be serious right? a crush on Ryan?????????? ...... Ryan ( Phoney ) Seacrest ??.

Mells Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

CAN'T STAND THE ARCHULETTA-BOT! Love me some David Cook & Jason Castro. I used to love Carly too and I'm super glad she finally covered up that awful arm tattoo but it just doesn't seem as though she's been emotionally connecting with the songs or the audience. There's no denying she has an incredible range but I'm not feeling the emotion or connection with it.

David A ( Duckie ) ' continues his one trick pony act by singing ballads, and drools and slobbers while he does ' is so RIGHT! I can't see what people go crazy for this kid ... why? yes he has a 'nice ' voice but ahhhhh ZZzzzzz sorry talking about Duckie does that to me. HE did make me laugh last night though .... with those pants!!! LOL!! Good laugh .. thanks Duckie!

David Cook is the real deal. He is DIFFERENT and that alone is the sole reason I am watching AI for the first time since Idol 1 ... The fact that Cook takes risk is amazing .. because he is not just standing there with his lame hands and licking his lips not knowing what to do next ( yes sorry Duckie again ).

Congrads on a great night DAVID COOK!!

Wow---what a great blog Whitney---laughed out loud at the blinding light part!!!! David A. is really really really getting on my nerves and I use to love him.....Carly is really amazing and it is getting old that she is not getting the praise she deserves....David Cook was great as usual!!

JACKIE Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

DAVID COOK WAS PERFECT LAST NIGHT! AND THE FACT THAT HIS BROTHER WAS THERE TO SEE HIM MADE IT THAT MUCH MORE PERFECT! HE DESERVES TO WIN THE WHOLE COMPETITION HANDS DOWN. I DON'T GET THE WHOLE DAVID ARCHULETA THING AT ALL - HIS PERFORMANCE WAS NOT GOOD AT ALL - HE'S TOO PREDICTIBLE AND HE HAS NO (ZERO - NONE - NADA) STAGE PRESENCE AT ALL. I LOVED ALL YOUR COMMENTS AND AGREE WITH YOU 100%. OH AND ABOUT THE RYAN CRUSH - I'D HELP YOU BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT MY OWN CRUSH ON DAVID COOK!

rosie Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

If anyone didn't see that David Cook's tears were real, I pity them. And his performance of the best Mariah song was brilliant. Carly's out-of-breath rendition couldn't hold a light to Kelly's S1, I swear. I don't get why a singer-songwritery voice is ok for Jason and not Brooke? Both seem genuine and original yet to me she has the stronger voice. Wish it were going to be her and DC in F2 but it'll be boring adult contemporary Archuleta, who was so OFF. Why doesn't he go back to a younger Waiting On the World to Change sound at least if he insists on message songs each week? Or try to be a Jonas Brother or something? Poor kid. And Kristy and her LeAnn Rimesy version made me truly enjoy her; I'm in shock.

Matt Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

Man do I love Carly and Syesha. I can't remotely understand this mentality where people adore David A. and detest Syesha.

Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

For all of those who are bashing Andrew Cook, back the hell off okay? You have no idea what having Cancer is like or how family members feel when they deal with that type of illness. I assure you that it's not like eating a piece of chocolate cake.

DavidAfan Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:21 PM EST

my favorite was DA.
I love his personality, and the song was very pretty...If you have faith in God, everything is possible!!

Stephanie T. Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

The runs were not needed for "Without You". But overall I was really impressed by the men on this night. I thought that they were going to have trouble.

Christina Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

Carly was great! I rewatched her performance a few times on youtube to see if I had missed something, and I couldn't find anything wrong with it. She does seem to be holding back because she's afraid to go off pitch, which makes her performances less enjoyable than they should be, but she still sounded great. The judges are sabotaging her chances by praising others higher than they deserve and pointing out every micro-flaw for Carly. As a big fan of Carly's voice, it sucks to watch.

Heather Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

I am going to jump in with all the people saying "Thank you Whitney!" Between you and Slezak I feel somehow the whole Idol concept is perfectly captured. I've always adored anything you put into writing because you're so beautifully irreverent. Even as you admit a crush on Seacrest. To those upset about her take on the matter, sit back and learn to laugh at yourselves too. All of us responding to this board have developed a guilty pleasure with an extremely silly phenomenon. Which is okay! Just learn to embrace it with humor, not bitterness.

Jen Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 12:42 PM EST

Absolutely agree 100% with your comments about Carly. I was so incensed after the judges comments last night I couldn't see straight. What does the girl have to do to get a little respect from those 3? Also, loved the David C. anecdote. Loved the whole blog. Excellent!

kk Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

JoeT Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

Carly and Syesha sucked, as usual! Can't wait for both of them to be gone! Tonight will be it for one of them!!!

So was Paula's boytoy there or are the breakup rumors true?

lisa warner Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

You know, I actually do think parts of David Cook's performance were "shaky," and there were some off notes--but the performance was so original, and sooo emotionally inspired that it just soared. The other contestants could stand to learn a thing or two from him: it's not always about hitting every perfect note--it's about originality and soul and emotion.
The haters will always be around, but David has fans like nobody's business and he will be around for a long time. it is privilige to witness a star in the making--someone with brains, sensitivity, and all around class. Somthing not often seen in the music business--esp. on AI.

Angela Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

I agree 100% with your blog. DC rocked like there's no tomorrow, Carly never gets the credit she deserves, and DA gets more credit than he deserves.

The "pretty blond thing" standing next to Ryan in the pit was Jamie Ray Newman. She's an actress who has guest starred on LOTS of tv shows (including Supernatural and Veronica Mars) and had a contract role on General Hospital several years ago. According to imdb, she's in the upcoming Patrick Dempsey movie "Made of Honor," so I'm guessing her appearance on AI last night was an awkward promotional stunt.

Embrace your Seacrest crush. I embraced mine years ago. He's smart, savvy, and snarky - great combination.

Colleen Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

I wasn't blown away by David A's performance, don't know why the judges were. I loved Carly's, especially the toned down beginning. It really showed off the strength and purity and range of her voice. I'm not sure why the judges keep bashing her while still scraping up inappropriate praise for the others.

Jennifer Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

I agree - you guys who are bashing David C. for having a sick brother and using it to his advantage utterly disgusts me. He has not mentioned ONCE that he has a sick brother, in fact if the media hadn't caught wind about it none of us would have known. A gimmick? You're sick.

Mark H Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

Great, another Idol blogger with no vocal training or ability to recognize creative effort and who complains that Idol is trying to pre-select the winner. Yet, somehow its OK for you to deliver CARLYISGODEVENIFSHEDELIVERSLOUSYPERFORMANCES.COM

Sophie Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

Oh, and as for David Cook stealing arrangements - for all the times that he has used other people's alternative takes, he has accounted for them. And you wouldn't know this because you don't care to research before you open your big mouths, but in his original profile before Elenor Rigby, he DID credit Doxology - HOWEVER the producers cut out what he said unbenownst to David! The other arrangements he has borrowed - Whitesnake's Day Tripper and Chris Cornell's Billie Jean - he credited.
And not to mention, if you feel that way, the entire show is a 'rip-off' - contestants constantly take the original artist's song and arrangement and never credit them.
Lay off David Cook, for once! I don't know why so many people enjoy tearing him down.

Simon Bowel Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

David Cook was good but was overpraised by the judges. I thought the performance was a little shaky. Jason Castro was also good and did not deserve Randy Jackson's stupid comments. Carly by far was the worst of the night. It was so overwrought it was painful watching her.

Cookie Lover Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

Yup, I knew about his brother, and that segment of the show was absolutely magical. I've never been so touched by reality television before. Brought tears to my eyes.

I can't help you with Ryan; he seems like a very nice guy, but I'm just not into him. I am, however, very much into David Cook. ;) If you can help me get over that, I will be forever indebted to you.

Sophie Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

Some of you David Cook haters are disgusting. I can't believe you would accuse him of using his brother as a gimick! He hasn't even MENTIONED his brother to anyone, it's all been press coverage! Use your brains for once and stop going so unacceptably low to put someone down that you don't even know at all.

me Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

I am a believer and what not, but honestly it makes me mad that David A. chooses slow ballads with a religious theme EVERY single week. He should show a little diversity up there... but by far the worst was Brooke. I want her to go HOME, her voice isn't strong enough for this competition. Period.

Sara Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:47 AM EST

fustercluck... hahaha!! This recap was great, thanks for the info about DC's brother. And YES, Carly was robbed of praise she well-deserved! Even though.... uhh... it wasn't as good as Kelly Clarkson's version, season 1. *shrugs*

sage Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:43 AM EST

I am as cynical about AI pimping and staged machinations as they come, and even I think anyone who cries "sympathy vote" in conjunction with David Cook's courage and that of his ill brother is really missing a heart. Seeing his brother light up the stage was probably incredibly meaningful for the ill brother. And David Cook performed in a whole other league, right from the gut. You can't fake that.

Carly's Biggest Fan Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

Carly was a trainwreck and should be voted off immediately.

More tone deaf meatheads trashing David Cook's unabashedly brilliant and "breath of fresh air" performance, according to Simon, in the otherwise dreary night of "Karaoke type singing" again according to Simon, with the single other exception of Carly whom Simon clearly hates and will stoop to every level possible to demean her truly beautiful voice. The rest of the show was booorrriiinnnggg. Baby puppy David A. continues his one trick pony act by singing ballads, and drools and slobbers while he does. Is he 12 or what? The producers have clearly decided that the finalists will be David A. and David C. There will be a slot for Jason (I'll never understand why, he is so weak a singer. Once again, A.I. is fixed and the American voters who support this scam job will be patronized and lied to. Talk about reality show? HA! In your dreams. It is all planned and pre-decided. As far as Ryan Seacrest, go awaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

Carly was not robbed of any praise. What is it with EW's writers? She's not as good as you make her out to be. This isn't American Idol with Carly Smithson, and I'm about to stop reading recaps since they're starting to say the same thing: Carly = Awesome and Everyone Else = Not Carly.

Amanda Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

David C's performance was a piece of crap. He didn't rock - he didn't even hit all the notes! Last week he disappointed as well. I like Carly, but it sounded like she didn't practice. Jason was perfect, Kristy and Syesha sang well, Brooke WAS terrfied and the reason for David A's popularity continues to evade me.

Cancer is a sad sad story, but David C is terrible, and I am completely mystified by his presence on this show.

I hope America keeps Carly in a bit longer. Imagine her tackling the "rock" sound that Ashlee Simpson, Meiley Cirus (sp?) and Avril Lavigne try but fail to do.

tracy Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:21 AM EST

a terminally ill brother (who has two young children) is a "gimmick"? people disgust me.

Sara Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

Oh good, I'm glad I'm not the only one with an irrational and maligned crush on Seacrest. I just have to respect him for his poise with how much he has going on.

Syesha has a pretty voice and this week should've been really good for her, but her personality is just kinda bleh.

Jen Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Oh yeah...Brook who? I haven't liked that talentless flake from the very beginning. (Hello? Vocal range? Lack thereof? You trackin'?) And Sanjayesha? I can't even listen to her anymore after she did that baby cry thing again. Not like I ever enjoyed listening to her anyway.

Jen Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

I totally agree with Donna, when I heard about the sick brother thing, the first thing I thought was...yet another gimmick from Cook...he's full of 'em. I would never vote for that schmuck. (Even if he is talented.) Of all the people left, Jason's voice is the most unique and he's the most likely to deliver music that isn't a carbon copy of EVERYTHING else that's already out there. Down with Archie! He's just another useless Clay Aiken clone. All that talent ruined by all that boringness. Carly and Kristy were both awesome last night and Simon not realizing it was just plain bogus. But he recognized Jason...so that's all I really care.

Hey Donna Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Will you do anything to get off this blog?
Enough already. YOU go away.

donna Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

I am getting really tired of David C. No sympathy vote from me. He will do anything to get votes - stealing arrangements, crying on stage. Enough alreay. Go away!!

cori Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

that lady who was with ryan is jaime ray newman-she was on general hospital for awhile and was in an episode of csi. i noticed her too and was totally confused by it.

Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

I cannot believe you lust after Seacrest. I didnt know anyone could stand the guy.

kay Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

Hey Pastorek Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

I am officially jealous. Eddie Vedder!!!!
Anyway, good report. And I feel your pain. I go channel surfing when I watch AI.
And I kinda figured out why David C. was crying. I saw the sickly guy in the audience and figured it was his brother.
No matter who wins this thing, David C. will be the most successful, imo.

george11 Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

His voice rocks. I love his song. I saw him on --W e a l t h yR o m a n c e.c o m---last week. Apparently he is daating online now.

Marie Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

Carly did not sing the second half of the song well, she was off on several notes. Syesha sounded like helium sucked through a tin can, and how do you sit in a position to recap a show when clearly you have no muscial judging skills and you obviously didn't do your homework!?! For shame! Also, there is no conspiracy, David Archuleta is a wonderful artist who deserves praise for his vocal talent. Or are you thinking your opinion is more valuable than all three judges and 1/2 of America?!

Amy Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

I am absolutely infatuated with David Cook!!! He rocks!!! Oh and not to mention he is hot!!! I would love to be able to go to one of the shows. His tears made me want him even more!!!

Nix Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:46 AM EST

So let's talk about real music and musicianship now. How were the Vedder solo shows?

Sven Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

You could not pay me to watch AI, but when I when saw Whitney's name, I had to read the post. Thank you Ms. Pastorek for treating this show in the way it should be reported.

michelle Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

It's not possible to get over the Seacrest crush. He's too cute!

Lisa Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:31 AM EST

Well, I would say I enjoyed your "commentary" but, A. you forgot Syeshia and, B. you love Carly. Syeshia totally blew Carly out of the water. I understand you're attached and all, but you should probably give that up and go in another direction. Did you buy her album?

Lindsey Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:19 AM EST

Whitney - I always love your recaps - you have an excellant sense of snark. :) Plus I love that you kind of despise the whole Idol monster, but that you love Carly - who was totally robbed of VERY deserving praise (yet again). She sounded amazing (yet again) last night - the judges are f*tards.

Broadway Baby Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:12 AM EST

No kidding Sally - I forgot about her until you brought her up lol

Broadway Baby Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:11 AM EST

Ryan is some kind of borg - resistance is futile - I also tried and have failed. I often dream of our lovely white cottage filled with very very short children....

also Jessica Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:05 AM EST

It's been awhile since I've been able to be too involved in the performances but hasn't it always been the conspiracy that whoever the judges like, America doesn't vote for them? Simon will say someone's "brilliant" and then they'll get voted off. Maybe what's happening is they don't want the poor 'puppy' to be led down this crazy career path and they have finally caught on--say one thing and the audience will ignore it!

Sally in Chicago Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 09:00 AM EST

Wow, you totally forgot Syesha? Or did I miss it? Was she THAT forgettable?

Jessica Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

I agree with you on the uncomfortable Ryan love. Don't try to understand, just embrace it. David C. was abso-frakkin-lutely amazing and his watery eyes only made me heart him more. It annoyed me that KLC had to remind us (twice!) that she gave MC chills. It's sad that audience manipulation, not talent, has gotten her this far. Here's hoping she, or Brooke, gets the boot.

Adam S Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:35 AM EST

I just *don't get* wha tthe judges like about David A. Everything about him SCREAMS awkward. And I don't think the Carly-bashing is even a little subtle anymore. Honestly, I'm starting to think this is the season AI jumps the shark.

AA Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 08:18 AM EST

Oh Whitney, thank you for bringing the "love" into my love-hate relationship with AI. I thought last night's show was very snoozeworthy, but your on-the-scene recap was rockin'. Thx!
