Trailer Blazer: 'Blindness'

As a lifelong horse racing fan, I know that it takes more than a first-class pedigree to produce a champion. But the combination of Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Gael Garcia Bernal, Danny Glover, Sandra Oh and director Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener, City of God) makes Blindness look like a pretty good bet for my must-see list come this fall.

And while we're on the subject, might I just add that I sometimes wish studios would only release teasers (like the one below), rather than those full-fledged, reveal-90-percent-of-the-plot trailers that inevitably pop up closer to the release date? I mean, really, all I need are hints of plot — the way the happy couple's morning routine is jolted by a sudden illness, shots of men in hazmat suits, that wince-inducing close-up of an eyedrop, Oh uttering the word "containment" — to convince me to shell out $11. Of course, maybe that's just the spoilerphobe in me speaking.

Either way, what's your feeling on the Blindness teaser? Have you seen enough to convince you to go (or not) when it hits theaters on October 3? Holla!

You've got me interested in the movie and the book.

I think the movie you are thinking of, Patty, is "Right at Your Door".

I'm lining up starting now.

I actually saw a preview screening of the film a few months back in Toronto, and while it is a very interesting idea for a film, it did not come together at all for me. They didnt do nearly enough with the idea and, for having a pretty stellar cast, I thought they were all underused and underwritten. Danny Glover's character was downright laughable. I hope the final cut is better than what I saw, otherwise this one will be a huge letdown for most I'm guessing.

The book was indeed amazing, couldn't put it down. So there's always the concern of how well the book translates to film but with the cast and director they've assembled I feel they can do it justice.

Slezak's comment about husband/wife morning routine reminded of another trailer I saw - one goes out and gets infected with some horrible disease and the other won't let the spouse back in the house. What the heck is that movie? They seem sort of the same to me.

Where are the Triffids?

I can't judge a product until i see it completely. That would be judging it blindly... get it, blindly... but the trailer is captivating, the novel was amazing, I'm buying a ticket.

Oh my gosh, I am WAY more than excited about this film. In part, it's because it's one of the most thrilling books I've read in the last few years. But it also has quite the amazing pedigree on it, including really interesting casting, director and screenwriter choices. I'm sold.

I have to echo the comments of ns and Laurie. I read the book maybe a little over a year ago, and it was extremely engaging. I'm a little wary of this being translated well into a visual medium since the plot surrounds "blindness." The audience was essentially as blind as the characters in the book at times, which I think was part of its entertainment value, even though the story is supposed to be one of those tales that teaches us about "the human condition." I think a movie version will show us too much to be nearly as effective, but the cast definitely has me excited.

More then half the films ever made are implausable. Its just a movie.

I was really into the trailer until the "whole world becomes blind" part.. It just seems a bit ridiculous. Maybe it's not a good idea to have a only a hint of a plot if that plot borders on implausable?

That book was awesome. Could not put it down. Hope the movie does it justice.

I'm with you. There's nothing worse than seeing a trailer, getting excited about a movie, and then realizing you've already seen the best parts of said movie in the trailer!

For what it's worth, the source material is one of the most remarkable novels I've ever read. I'm curious to see how they were able to make a movie out of it.
