"Square Pegs" on DVD! What should be next?

Mar 11, 2008, 02:02 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: DVD/Video, Television, Waiting, Who Else Remembers This?

As I wrote in 2004, when EW named Square Pegs one of the TV shows we were dying to get on DVD, a misfit Sarah Jessica Parker + the comic angst of Freaks and Geeks x the emotional resonance of My So-Called Life ÷ the acerbic absurdity of Popular = it's time! And finally, it is. The 1982-83 series has been given a May 20 release date. Creator Anne Beatts told us four years ago that she had a few ideas for extras: commentary on ''Muffy's Bat Mitzvah'' (below); a tribute to the show's innovative use of rock (the Waitresses! Devo! guest star Bill Murray dancing to Billy Idol!), and one very special character update, ''Where is the Guatemalan child now?'' Let's hope she gets her way.

What other TV shows are you still dying to get on DVD?

Life and Times of Molly Dodd for sure...anyone remember the year and who broadcast? I remember a major one did for a season or two, but then someone else picked it up...

jamiemart Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 10:19 PM EST

I still cannot believe that Ally McBeal and Designing Women are not available on DVD yet. Could you imagine the words that Julia Sugarbaker aka the Terminator would have for Ally McBeal?

Meridith Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 12:39 PM EST

In the hopes that more Ed votes will help the cause, ED!!!
Designing Women (up until Suzanne and Charlene leave; please destroy the rest!) I love me some Square Pegs too.

Laurie Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

Men in Trees!

EatPoo Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

Jack & Jill for sure. I truly enjoyed that show and I know so many of my friends that would be thrilled to have it.

kim in kentucky Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

oooh, just remember --- HOOPERMAN with John Ritter !!

Joe Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

It's Your Move - Mid 80's - Jason Bateman Just after Silver Spoons. If only for the Dregs of Humanity episodes!

stephanie Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 05:25 PM EST

the state. hands down.

Randi Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

YES! Square One NEEDS to be on dvd! Hilarious show, love love love it! Someone make this happen!

Gabzilla Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 04:10 PM EST

How about "James at 15?" If it's not out already :)

Laurie Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

OMG, I remember Student Exchange! It was GLORIOUS. I have a tape somewhere with most of it on it (missed the beginning of the second half, dang it.) I would pay good money for that and also an American Playhouse on PBS called Ask Me Again starring a young Leslie Hope. It also features the loveliest version of the song "Ask Me Again," sung by Rosemary Clooney, which I've sadly never been able to find. And my final pick would be Deceptions, the supercheesy eighties miniseries with Stefanie Powers and Barry Bostwick.

Stephanie T. Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

Hope and Gloria

miss p. Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

So stoked about Square Pegs. Now if only I could get my hands on the final season of the Mary Tyler Moore show and the classic 1970's movie "Killdozer." Yessssssss!!!!

clay Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

The Original Bionic Woman with Lindsay Wagner, still waiting for it. Saw the whole series for sale at COmic-Con a few weeks ago, but couldn't pony up $150 for it. And the 1984 TV movie Lace with Phoebe Cates, remember that one? "Which one of you bit**es is my mother?" Classic.

Dinosaur Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

I was a fan of "Time Trax" starring the dude from Pet Sematary.

Jane Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

China Beach!!!!!!!!!!

Designing Women!!!!!
Julia Sugarbaker was my hero and role model - I blame all my feminist leanings on her.

"And that, Marjorie, just so you know, and someday your children will know, was the night. The lights. Went out. In GEORGIA."
Brilliant!!!

I completely forgot about Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, what a wonderful show! How about China Beach??

tj Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

After careful thought, here's what I would pay to resee - (for those who caught of age before VCRs)
- Solid Gold (the Dionne Warwick era)
-The Wonder Years
- The Brady bunch kids cartoon
- The carol burnett show
-Donny & Marie
-ZOOM
- The Mickey Mouse Club (the 70s version)
- The Midnight Special
and I really like to be a collection of the ABC "Movie of the Week." To this day, my memory is haunted by "Short Walk to Daylight," James Brolin trapped inside of a department store and has to fend of vicious guard dogs, Connie Stevens as "The Sex Symbol," some movie about a kidnapped girl has for ransom who is buried alive underground in a casket and "The Devil's Daughter." (Who could go to sleep after that????)

Sonja Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

I might be the only person on earth who ever watched this, but I'd love to see the tween series Swans Crossing on DVD. That show was the start of my Sarah Michelle Gellar girl crush!!

Laurie Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

Where's the Nickelodeon love??? For all of use who grew up in the late 80's and early 90's, how can we forget the greatness that is SALUTE YOUR SHORTS! And what about Hey Dude! Clarissa Explains It All and The Adventures of Pete and Pete are already on DVD (check Netflix), but Salute Your Shorts was by far the best show that ever aired on this channel. I would pay some serious money to have this show on DVD...who's with me???

Kerri Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:31 AM EST

The Wonder Years. For me, nothing else really even matters.

Jen Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

Totally agreed with the Disney movies from the 80s like Mark Twain & Me and A Friendship in Vienna. But call me crazy - my favorite show was Danger Bay on the Disney Channel!

Allyson Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

How about the 80s Magical World of Disney Movies? Anybody remember "Exchange Student" with Heather Graham and Maura Tierrny? I would pay good money so my daughter could see those...

tomf Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:54 AM EST

I want "The Beverly Hillbillies!" No show is funnier.

Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:38 AM EST

Ed (I'm honestly at the point where they should just replace the music that has licensing issues..unless it's super important like the song used in the credits because I want my ten dollar bets and Phil's crazy ideas for creating Stuckeybowl business)! Real Ghostbusters, I'd like to have my childhood memories please. Also Cupid, I loved that show! If I could only choose one, it'd be Ed. I'd pay the full 60 dollar price per season if they'd just release the darn thing.

Me Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 08:33 AM EST

ED! I know it's been said. But I clicked on the comments link planning to add ED and so dammit, I'm voting for ED.

kim in kentucky Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 07:20 AM EST

ED ED ED ED ED ED ED !!!

lilybird Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 06:21 AM EST

"Legend" starring Richard Dean Anderson and John de Lancie. One of UPN's first (and greatest) shows!!

Lance Johnson Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 02:17 AM EST

Fernwood 2Night. Fred Willard at his glorious best and Martin Mull in a perfect setup.

Walter Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 01:13 AM EST

Anyone who grew up in the 90's should remember Mighty Max.

Katya Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 11:03 PM EST

Definitely Ed. That's the only show that I would definitely buy every single show from every single season.

Greg Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

The 1960s Batman television show. That is the Holy Grail of DVD sets because neither Fox nor Warner will budge from their positions with regard to royalties.

Stef327 Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 10:50 PM EST

A few years ago, a local NY cable station showed a Mother's Day Marathon of "The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd". I realized how much I missed it and have been looking for it on DVD ever since.

MD Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 09:55 PM EST

Another vote for ED!! Come on all ready - I need a Stuckyville Fix!!
Love the person that mentioned the orginal Bionic Woman - oh I miss Jamie Summers and her dog Max.
And for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the show but it took place in an antique store and it was kind of super-natural like - I want so say it was called Friday the 13th but I cannot be sure.
BUT REALLY ED!!!!!!!!

MissKitty Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

thirtysomething!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Debbie Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 09:43 PM EST

Will someone please convince NBC to be kind and release Seasons 2 & 3 of American Dreams???? It's just not fair to have released season 1 and left us all hanging. I miss the Pryor family!

DancerInDC Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 09:25 PM EST

I love Square Pegs!

I know it's more recent, but why do we only have one season of Top Model on DVD?

DS9Sisko Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

Oops, I meant FRESNO

DS9Sisko Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

FRSNO (CBS) - Carol Burnet, Dabney Coleman, Gregory Harrison, Terri Garr, Charles Grodin, Valerie Mahaffey, Charles Keating and Anthony Heald = the all-time funniest spoof of 80's prime time soaps, complete with Burnett using a broken down station wagon as her "limo" and an exact recreation of the cabin fight in "Red River"....with two women! This needs to be released pronto in its original form, uncut and sans laugh track.

To Ramona Fan Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 09:10 PM EST

The Beverly Cleary "Ramona" with Sarah Polley is on VHS, and most good public libraries have the tapes. I thought I was the only one who remembered Sarah Polley on that show!

orville Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 08:33 PM EST

I'll add my voice to the rest calling for "Ed" to be released. My favorite show when I was a kid was "Scarecrow and Mrs. King." Loved it. Want a special edition. I'd love the rest of "St. Elsewhere" at a quicker pace than they've been releasing many of the older shows.

Nicole Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 07:51 PM EST

Designing Women!!!!! I loved this show so much and would love to have all of Julia Sugarbaker's witty and cutting speeches on dvd.

Also, I agree with everyone who said The Wonder Years - a true classic.

Adrienne Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

Cupid! Hopefully if the remake makes it on ABC and does well, then maybe it'll get pushed to come out on DVD.

kim in kentucky Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

and please don't judge me --- I REALLY want Cop Rock - taped it off A&E several years ago and it did have some great songs

kim in kentucky Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

agree - Molly Dodd, Square Pegs, Doctor Doctor, Ally McBeal, Powers that Be, and the rest of St. Elsewhere, NYPD Blue & Murphy Brown - where's the rest of the series?

Jessica Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 06:30 PM EST

I fully agree with all the Daria and Undressed(if on;y for early Adam Brody!) lovers out there! I have missed those shows something fierce. I would also love to a DVD release of The Taking of Pelham 123-the tv movie version-with Donnie Walhberg. I had it recorded at one point but watched it so often the tape went kablooey! And, because of my immense infatuation with James Marsden, I would love to see Second Noah and Moody's Diner(I'm pretty sure that's the name) on DVD. I would be in tv heaven come birthday time:)

Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

Totally agree with Daria and Wonder Years. Wonder Years use to be syndicated, but have not seen it in a while. Daria, oh how I have missed you too!!!

EMF Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

James at 15

The rest of the Fame series

"Rainbow" with Andrea McCardle. It's a made for TV movie I've been dying to see again.

DS9Sisko Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 05:18 PM EST

THE POWERS THAT BE (1992, NBC) - John Forsythe, Holland Taylor, David Hyde Pierce, Peter MacNichol, Valerie Mahaffey, Elizabeth Berridge = one of the most hilarious sitcoms ever created, the "Arrested Development" of it's day!

IndianaJenn Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

I am with the "Parker Lewis Can't Lose" folks!! Loved that show! Am freaking out that Mikey is now playing dads in commercials!

keiren63 Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

Rob Thomas' Cupid. Pleaseohpleaseohplease God.

BOTR Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

One show that I've wanted to see on DVD for the longest time is My Sister Sam; I loved that show when I was little and would love to see it again in some form. I would also like to see the last three seasons of Life Goes On on DVD, as only the first season has been released so far nearly two years ago.

nolagrl Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

showing my age:
* The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd
* thirtysomething

wildecat Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

OK, I have to get this off my chest. I should've loved Square Pegs since I was in high school at time and basically looked like I could be Patty and Lauren's love child, but it irked me to no end and here's why: they couldn't have found an honest-to-God chubby actress to play "the fat one"? I mean, we were all supposed to not notice that it was obviously a thin girl with padding stuffed under her clothes!? For a show that was praised to high heavens for being so "smart," that really, really insulted my intelligence. I've waited 25 years to say this! So there!! Rant over.

Stephanie T. Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

Gotta love those Snigglets. Rich Hall was too much. I propose DVD's of the classic late 70's through 1989 cartoons and Saturday Morning Cartoons. Misfits of Science would also be pretty sweet.

James Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 04:25 PM EST

Not to bring it to a wicked geeky place, but I'd love to have 'X-Men' (the animated series) on DVD. That was some GREAT Saturday morning cartoonage. And it holds up still!!! Lesser cartoons have gotten the DVD treatment, so c'mon!

Joe in Philly Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 04:20 PM EST

As I understand it the few home video releases of Daria that have taken place so far (a couple of the movie-length episodes) are somewhat marred because the music was changed because they didn't get the rights to the songs on the original broadcasts. That could be an issue if they want to release the series itself.

I'm wondering if that was an issue with Square Pegs as well.

dma69 Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

Loved, loved LOVED Square Pegs. This show should've never been cancelled. I was in 7th grade Catholic school when this show was on. Never understood why it got cancelled in the first place. Thank God for DVD.

Snarf Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

Like, The Scarecrow & Mrs King. Totally!

Scotto Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

OMG - LOVED Square Pegs and Open House. Is the original Tracey Ullman show on DVD?

e-z-e Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

"The State"

It was so close last year!!

Curse you, MTV!!!

t Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 03:48 PM EST

Doctor, Doctor with Matt Frewer! Hilarious.

Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 03:47 PM EST

Ramona!!!! The PBS show based on the Beverly Clearly books starring Sarah Polley (the same one who was just nominated for an Oscar for "Away From Her."). I really want to see this show again.

Rachel K Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

Ally McBeal and Without a Trace

goldend Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

1.- Wonder Years
2.- Whiz kids
3.- The Naked Truth (Tea Leoni!)

Ann Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 03:31 PM EST

Less Than Perfect!! Totally under-rated show. Can't wait for it to come out on DVD. If any powers that be see this, please put it out on DVD!!

Laurie Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

DARIA DARIA DARIA. Joey's on DVD and still no Daria? Seriously, tv gods?

Lori Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

I have a few series I'd love to have on DVD, including some very short lived ones:

Mod Squad
Rags to Riches
HR Puff-n Stuff, esp the Tom Sawyer and Arabian Nights sequences
The Untouchables (!!!)
Barbary Coast (very short-lived)

Some of the old "Wide World of Disney" and "Kukla Fran & Ollie" movie offerings would be great. I still remember one about an Indian boy and a chiquaqua crossing the Mohave Desert (or maybe Desert Valley) and another one about an Indian boy who saves an eagle.

True Dat Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

"Ally McBeal", for crying out loud. It's about durn time.

jfire Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

Batman with Adam West!

The Smothers Brother Comedy Hour!

http://popculturesafari.blogspot.com/

Rich Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

The Green Hornet, with Bruce Lee!

SJ Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

"Square One". It was a show on PBS that taught math to kids. It's the only reason I got good grades in math.

Marci Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

I would KILL for Daria on DVD. Seriously, kill for it.

Rogertick Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

ANDY RICHTER CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE.
The DVD gods have managed to get 1.200 plus episodes of Dark Shadows out on DVD, how about the brilliant 19 episodes of ARCTU. Curse you FOX TV and your itchy cancellation finger.

mcm Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed!

I cannot say it enough (clearly)!

ChrisChicago Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

I would gnaw off my arm for Thirtysomething on DVD!

Ayesha, NYC Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

Seasons 2, 3 and 4 of A Different World. Season 1 sucked. The last season sucked. But the ones in between are classics!

Carl Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

And ditto The Six Million Dollar Man. And the original Bionic Woman.

Carl Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

The 1960's Batman series. Where the heck is it?

Eric Friedmann Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN!

Jen S Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:27 PM EST

EVERWOOD!!! First of all, I love that show. Second of all, just one season is ridiculous! Thirdly... Bright & Hannah's relationship needs to be documented forever!!!

Also, Undressed from MTV! So many lol's on that show. Quality entertainment.

Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

Homefront!! And I agree with those that have said Everwood seasons 2, 3, and 4- how can they release just one season and then leave the fans hanging?!

Elizabeth Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

Parker Lewis: genius Popwatchers! And whoever busted out "Duet" - two points for you. The problem I find is some of the obscure shows I've looked for (Airwolf? Wiseguy) is that they are super-expensive for the whole shabang.
