Is anyone else unexpectedly unexcited about the new Madonna CD?

Mar 31, 2008, 01:37 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Music, To Care or Not to Care

Timberlakemadonna_l I've spent the last two decades locked in an oddly Pavlovian relationship with Madonna: She puts out a single, and I start salivating in anticipation of her album release date. So imagine my confusion that upon the release of "4 Minutes," her new duet with Justin Timberlake (pictured, with Madonna, at the latter's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction earlier this month), I'm experiencing symptoms of dry mouth and general ennui. The expected rush of anticipation over her upcoming Hard Candy disc (due April 29), well, it's just not there. So what gives? Listen to the single, "4 Minutes," after the jump, and we'll discuss.

Well, for starters, "4 Minutes" just isn't all that. Madge and Justin's vocals are so buried in the bloopy-horn mix, the single might as well have been released by Computers No. 1 and 2. But I think maybe, deep down, it makes me feel a little depressed that Madonna is working with Justin and Timbaland in the first place. I mean, isn't she supposed to be out mining the underground dance scene looking for the next funky producer whose sound she can co-opt and foist on an unsuspecting public? Shouldn't she be inherently opposed to latching onto the producer du jour, especially when said producer just finished working on the new Ashlee Simpson?

I dunno, perhaps it's too much to expect Madonna to give us the old razzle-dazzle some 25 years into her music career. I've got "Burning Up" and "Bedtime Story" and "Beautiful Stranger" and "Music" and "Nobody Knows Me" in regular rotation on my iPod — and maybe that's enough. I'm just wondering if anyone else is feeling as ambivalent as I am about Hard Candy, or if I'm perhaps the only Madonnaphile experiencing such blasphemous thoughts? Discuss!

I LOVE HARD CANDY.... GREAT NEW DIRECTION and Still Is Madonna, She knows whats up.. Whats wrong woth some woth featuring J.T ? Its the second time since Britney... Madonna has made it thru the younger Audience
4 minutes sold over 2.4 million downloads WAY MORE THAN Mariah number one Touch my body.... Comes to show she had some effect on todays Radios listeners.....

Ritta Mon, May 12, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

I disagree completely. This is an amazing song by her and Justin's vocals meshed really well. It's a great new comeback for her and the song 4 min. is an absolutely fabulous song. Although this is my opinion I respect yours greatly. Keep me posted!!~

Michael Southard Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 06:25 PM EST

Another amazing Timbaland/Justin collaboration is Duran Duran's "Red Carpet Massacre" the album is flawless from start to finish, and I can't believe that being on Sony/BMG (epic records) that radio is not playing the songs.

People would be stupid enough to play "London Bridge" by Fergie, and Chris Brown's crap, but the Duran Duran album is amazing. It is different, but it delivers. People need to stop living in the past and basing their expectations on a time when they were happy with who they were and assigning an artists song at the time to what was good. Move on already.

B-52's "Funplex" is amazing as well, but radio isn't playing that stuff either.

"Crank Dat" Souldja Boy is probably the worst song I have ever heard in my life, next to "London Bridge" and "Kiss Kiss", but it is amazing how that stuff made it to the top. It is called $$$, and buying airtime.

FM Radio will be gone in 2009 and I can't wait, it is as corrupt as MTV, VH1, and the White House

Michael Southard Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

The funny thing is, the Mariah Carey review of A- has been bought by wining and dining with the writer of the article. E=MC due on April 15th is horrible. Touch My Body is cute because of the video. The album is nowhere near as good as "Mimi", but neither of the albums rank anywhere near Confessions on A Dancefloor in regards to quality, great music, lyrics, and production value. It is very good start to finish.

Hard Candy is different, but I have heard Candy Store, 4 Minutes, Give It 2 Me, Beat Goes On & Miles Away, and I don't really care what EW has to say, or Madonna haters. The problem with Billboards Hot 100 is that the #1 songs like "Low", "Bleeding Love", and a few others are crap. It is a clear sign of DJs being bought and labels buying airtime.

Madonna's gay fans alone will make the album debut at #1, but with "Sorry", "Jump", "Hung Up", & "Get Together" she was robbed. It is amazing how each one was #1 in Sales but no one would play it. That is a problem !

Trent880 Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

Love Madonna...don't love 4 Minutes. It's very "Me Against The Music" which also sucked lyrically and musically. Whereas "Music" (the song, not the album) was layer upon layer of genius that worked together flawlessly, this is just a big mess that doesn't work on any level.

Jeff Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 09:42 PM EST

The last batch of singles she released off her last record - especially "Sorry" and "Jump" - rank among the best of her entire career and were entirely ignored by radio in the USA, so if Madonna wants to get some new material on the radio by using Pherrell and Justin, then so be it as long as it's to good effect. It's not as if she's used guest rappers and collaborators for the last several records, she never does this. So using new millennium r&b production values is a new direction for her so, in effect, it is another kind of reinvention for the mother of reinvention. "4 Minutes" is designed to get her on the radio obviously and it's working and I'm glad, it's a good enough song. I've heard snippets of the new record and the other tracks actually sound even better so I'm looking forward to this new record.

Melissa Phillips Sun, Apr 6, 2008 at 12:01 AM EST

I am the biggest Madonna fan, but I have to admit I am a little dissappointed with the first single which is strange because I love Timberland and Timberlake. A marriage made in heaven right? ummm...no. Its ok, and I will still enjoy listening to the track but its a bit over done. I love Madonna because she is original and Timberlake and Timberland take that away. I hope the rest of the Album is better!!

Indianafan Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 08:31 PM EST

I absolutely love this song. I can't wait for "Hard Candy" to come out. This has been the Madonna album I have been waiting for, for a very long time.

We must face reality. Outside of the four released songs from "Confessions", the rest of the album doesn't spark unless you are a die hard fan.

There is no proof of that Clear Channel banning her, and most young kids don't know who Madonna is.

So support her project, and stop saying that she jumped the band wagon, or the music is overproduced, or that she is desperate for US success.

Matt Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

From what I hear, the rest of the album is better. I wouldn't be too concerned.

Seon Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 06:10 PM EST

this song is hot hot hot

Steve Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 05:47 PM EST

Funny sleeeeeezak does not write a blog about how unspectacular the new Mariah song is - just how disappointed he is in Madonna - she had no radio airplay due to her outspoken stance against the war and paid for it - sleeeezak knows this as an industry insider or maybe he is just a tool for Warner Brothers to stir the pot - either way irresponsible reporting by not putting up a correct link to hear the song as it is heard on the radio

Katy Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 03:05 PM EST

well, I kind of like it. Nice hook, good beat. But I think it does a lot more for JT's cred to work with her then for her with him.

FOOLS! Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

thanks to Gwen? is this a joke? Gwen should BOW DOWN - she owes her entire solo career to Madonna - and has been quoted saying it herself.

Andy Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

I kinda agree. And....the songs from "Confessoins" are still in heavy rotation on my iPod. But...guess what...although the album sold well here in the U.S. every single BOMBED on radio. Although I was saddened to hear that she was teaming up with Timba and JT (DESPERATE I thought) I finally realized that she had to do someething like this. She just signed a $120M contract with Live Nation. She has to prove she's relevant and that radio will at least play her songs. This is probably her "U.S.-flavored" transition and hopefully she'll go back to what she does best (straight up Pop Dance anthems) next time out. Having said all that, I've alreadly logged over 130 listens to "4 Minutes" on the iPod..so..I guess it's a grower for sure.

starchild Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 09:47 AM EST

love me some madonna. my problem with the track is that she's almost absent on her own record. the production matters more than she does. hope it's (the cd) not all like that.

AlanVadge Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 08:37 AM EST

yeah Michael, I'm kinda in the same boat as you. The song is good, but it's just good, nothing spectacular. Hung Up TO THIS DAY is still in rotation on my iPod, everytime I listen to it it still gets me in my gut ya know? 4 Minutes just doesnt do that, her singing isnt even the Mae West on it either.

Also, am I the only one who's concerned about how performable it is? I mean, she boomeranged around the world doin Hung Up all over the place on every awards show and music show, can she really do that with 4 Minutes if it doesnt fit into JT's scheduale?

I still eagerly await her album release, purely cause its Vadge and I'm predisposed to like her music as it's in my genes or something, but I just wish I was more excited.

moviechick Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 08:31 AM EST

Are you guys nuts? This song is really fun to dance to. I think it is perfect.

GeeMoney Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 07:46 AM EST

"4 Minutes" really isn't that good of a song... I was expecting a little more from her, especially since she hooked up musically with my future husband, Justin Timberlake. I'm hoping that the rest of her "Hard Candy" album is a little better.

M-fan Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 05:27 AM EST

Well, I have not exactly been thrilled with the new material and I know people who feel the same way - then again some are absolutely excited. From my point of view, it does not have that typical M stamp on it. However, I believe all fans, old and new, will find gems from this album. It may be different and even if I do question some of the choices she's made, I've still been a fan of hers over 20 years and a true fan will not give up over one single. 4 Minutes does grow on you, I have to say. I hated it at first, it was too loud and full and all that (I would have preferred the track a bit more cleaned up and more melodic) - but there's some really good official remixes coming out and the song is starting to grow on me, with the help of unofficial remixes. This is not the instant love I usually have, but I think it's gonna be a hit and I wish her new album well. I'm not sure if one can do this, but I'm giving you a link to a fan blog to check out:

I have to say I was happy when I first heard Madge was returning to R&B/Hip Hop style music, I had thought this would be the continuation of Bedtime Stories, but it seems like it will be a knockoff hybrid of Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado's album, I need a Timberland / Danja break

WOW REALLY??? I thought this track was hot off the bat! C'Mon -- easy leadoff to push the record to number one --its def not a typical Madge song offa the top but its def different and most of all - GREAT.

Twist Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 11:54 PM EST

Love 4 MINUTES! Can't wait for HARD CANDY!

James Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 11:39 PM EST

Madonna's lyrics have ALWAYS sucked, and I really hope Timbaland goes away for awhile after this, but I love this as much as I've loved any Madonna single. Thanks Gwen and Pharrell for the inspiration!

Phil Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 10:36 PM EST

And finally I'm not going to even comment on how much like a wax statue Madonna looks in that pic from the Rock N Roll Hall of fame induction, but Timberlake actually looks like some younger version of Hugh Jackman! Anyone else see that?

Phil Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 10:32 PM EST

And speaking of Mariah she isn't Madonna's ONLY competition. Though she is not touring or truly promoting her new release, Kylie Minogue's latest disc, "X" comes out tomorrow & she'll be performing on Dancing With The Stars tomorrow night on ABC. Her single, "All I See" is a straight up Pop/R&B jam that Janet or Ciara could have actually recorded, and there is of course a remix featuring rapper MIMS (they're both on Capitol reocrds). And then there's Leona Lewis who actually saw her "Bleeding Love" shoot to #1 on last week's Billboard Hot 100 chart, which is kinda fortunate for her cause Mariah is going to be seated in that throne until "Hard Candy" drops on April 29th. Its actually a pretty exciting month for pop music, but I really hope the other material Madonna has to offer is better than "4 Minutes". There is WAY too much going on & it seems like she is a Featured artist rather than the main performer!I love Madonna & have been a fan from the get go, but the song isn't memorable.

Phil Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 10:26 PM EST

I completely echo the thoughts by Ricky. Madonna knows U.S. radio shunned her last crop of songs & wanted a sure fire way to get a hit and airplay this time around! I am NOT a Madonna hater, and niether is Michael, he is speaking his mind, and when I first heard "4 Minutes" back in Dec. when Timbo played it at the Clear Channel Jingle Ball in Philly, I was like, the beat is hot, but the lyrics kinda suck & was hoping it wasn't the final version. And for everyone saying it sounds like Flo Rida's "Elevator", Tim prolly finished "4 Minutes" prior to "Elevator" but it just so happened when they never released the Madonna labum last year, "Elevator" came out first to follow-up Flo Rida's "Low" with another hit. I still think the song is rather weak, but will be huge since its sky rocketed up the iTunes chart and will give Madonna the 37th Top 10 Billboard hit on the new chart out this Thursday, which will also coincidentially see Mariah go to #1 with "Touch My Body" due to digital sales.

Sally in Chicago Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 09:03 PM EST

it seems every singer is masking their voice with layers and layers of vocals and techno sounds...the typical Madonna, good beat...but as with every other dance-hall queen, you can't hear the vocals at ALL. And it's more Justin singing than it is Madonna.

mike m Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 08:16 PM EST

I, too, was kinda "whatever" when I first heard it. But it is growing on me and now it is my ringtone. Anticipation for her album is still high. Already the album and single are at the top of i tunes charts.

Did she do something with her face? Her teeth? She doesn't look the same.

DS9Sisko Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

I'm am not the biggest Madonna fan.
I think Justin Timberfake is a joke.
Timbaland is so hit and miss these days it's almost schizophrenic.

But for a pop dance song, "4 Minutes" is hot, hot, hot!

thad Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

what are we comparing it to? Janet's Rock Wit U? Usher's horrible #1 single? Lil Mama? Lil Wayne? Flo Rida? Yuk! Hers at least is a good pop song. Her only competition is Mariah.

David Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 07:36 PM EST

I too love Madonna... but it seems like she releases bad choices for singles recently like Music, American Life, Hung Up - all repetitious/boring songs when in fact if she dug deep in these songs' respective albums she actually has nice songs she should have released like Nothing Fails & Forbidden Love (though I don't know why Madonna ever forgot to remember that she had another song Forbidden Love in her Bedtime Stories album!). And puhleez, we all know that the only reason why Madonna teamed up with the two Timbahs is because she hopes she could connect with the music listeners today which favor more RnB and Urban sounds. i guess that makes Madge... a Desperate Housewife! bwahaha! better stick with Mariah! hehehe... haters...let the Mariah vs Madonna debate commence! hehe. Go Mimi!! Go E=MC2!!! ;P

BrandonK Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 06:59 PM EST

We'll see how it is...It's not like Madonna has always batted 1000. Also, she did that song with Britney a while ago, which I would consider even more artistically bankrupt than working with Ashlee Simpson's producer. Anyway, I'm not worried about Madonna. She'll be alright.

boring Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

will ew.com put out a different story EVERY SINGLE DAY that questions whether or not Madonna has it or not? They've been doing it for years. Wait for the rest of the album before judging.

Tyler Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

I had similar sentiments the first time I heard the track. I'm a die-hard Lady M fan, and I felt guilty for not immediately loving it. However, after listening to it several times over - I'm sooo into it! Plus, hopefully it will get lots of U.S. radio airplay and expose Madge to a whole new (and really young) audience.

Nix Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

I would be one to say I despise hip-hop/rap, but I'm too scared of getting shot.

ooooo burn! someone tell simon vozick-levinson!

florida gay Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 06:13 PM EST

When "Sexy Back" originally hit radio, I hated it. It didn't even sound like Justin and I thought it was underwhelming. Within a month, it was receiving regular rotation on my iPod. So... undoubtedly, this song too will somehow creep in and rape my subconscious until I love it. Timbaland has definitely sold his soul to the devil lol.

Ricky Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

Unfortunately, if your song doesn't have a hiphop beat or someone rapping on it, it most likely will not get played on American Radio. It's a sad but true fact... that's what the kids like. I'm 29 and as far as musical tastes go, I'm old as dirt. I've bought nearly every Madonna album (as every gay man should), but I have to say.. this single seems kinda weak, but I'll still buy the album. I understand what Slezak is getting at. But what I think is going on here is Madonna wants to be big in the US again (despite her huge success overseas and here with the gays). In order to do that, she needs to go hiphop (eww, i feel dirty just saying that). Timbaland is the way to do that. Here's hoping she didn't lose herself in the process. We'll find out on April 29th.

Kent Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

I seriously LOVE this song. It may not be cutting edge, but it's a real toe tapper.

nathan Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

Oh yeah, and the song isn't so great either. Timbaland strikes again.

nathan Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 06:01 PM EST

I read a rumor on Yahoo today that there might be a remake of Casablanca with Madonna in the Ingrid Bergman role. Please God in Heaven, let this be a joke. Madonna is literally the worst actress in film history. I'd rather see an computer animated Casablanca with woodland creatures singing and dancing than that.

SDA333 Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

Since it's my feeling that hip hop/rap pretty much destroyed the music business, I can't get too excited about this new CD. But, I love Madonna and I'll end up buying it. Eventually.....

Steve Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 05:48 PM EST

Well your true colors have finally shown in BRIGHT NEON SleeeezaK! U Mariah Carey Flag Waving loyalist! So basically you spent a long paragraph convincing ew.com readors the new MAdonna song sucks and to not buy her new album - go watch ugly betty, put on mariah and drink your Madonna hatorade - you couldn't be more wrong - I for one will ignore your propoganda!

jericho Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

first let me say, that critics loved the single, major uk and us newspapers.
second, after 25 years of being the innovator, i dont think that ANYONE should complain about the one time she used overused timbaland! please!
all around the world she is selling like crazy and here in the US no station played the hits off her last album! how is it possible that the no2 biggest selling lp (worldwide behind coldplay) of 2005 had no airplay in the US! that is crap! so, hell yeah! good thing whe went with timbaland! timb is the only thing radio is playing except for rock!
so yeah i dont love 4 mins but i am happy that she is proving that whether the radio wants it or not, she will get a monster hit this year!

heer Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 05:10 PM EST

Some of these arguments are weak, to say the least. This would not be the first time that Madonna jumped on the bandwagon and used a hot producer. The Like A Virgin album owed its sound to Nile Rogers, who boosted the careers of Diana Ross and David Bowie not long before. Let's not forget Babyface, David Foster and others. The new single may make her sound like a supporting character, but her projects always shine because she's a bigger focus than the producer. I suspect that the resistance to this sound is a part of the hidden truth: most of her fans rabidly despise hip-hop. Check the fan sites and you'll see what I mean.

cimagato Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

Maybe it'll grow on me. It's catchy, I guess. Initially, I thought it was a joke. Maybe it's like when the Stones went through their Disco phase trying to be "current". They snapped out of it, maybe Madonna will find her own sound again.

Benny Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

I heard both versions and didn't care for either one. I tought the new album would take a new different direction but seems pretty generic to me.

ashley Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

I've always been a Madonna, but this track doesn't have me excited for the rest of the album. I'm more interested in Mariah's new disc.

Ronnie Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This is not the OFFICAL VERSION. The version you posted from youtube was an early rough cut that was leaked. The Real Version has a Timbaland Intro, and the beat is lower and is actually slower so you can hear the Vocals Better. The offical version is SO much Better!!!!

i was a bit skeptical when I first heard she was collaborating with timbaland and yes, when i first heard 4 minutes i thought it was like most timbaland tracks- sounding overproduced. but then it grew on me after 4 days of listening to it. (grab a boy! grab a girl!). lets have faith in our goddess of the universe. she knows what she's doing and she'll always know who's in charge.

Raven_Moon Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 03:46 PM EST

I don't think I've liked a Madonna song since "Don't Tell Me."

graeme Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

yeah that "official" version that's posted in the commetns is MUCH better than the version I heard. A little slowed down, and the instrumentation is pulled back a litte bit.

Sinde Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

She's getting too freaking old for this type of music. This is not breakthrough music like she used to do, not at all excited about this.

Dillon Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

I didn't like it at first, but it grew on me. Now it ever leaves my head. I think that says something about the longevity of the song. I'm sure this will make it to the top ten. Therefore, making her the person with the most top ten hits at 37!!!!

Rich Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 03:22 PM EST

It's nice to see Zsa Zsa Gabor getting work. I'm surprised Justin Timberlake even knows who she is. Maybe his mom was a fan.

Robbie Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

I'll probably enjoy the album, though I'm too busy being excited for Mimi's new CD to be hyped about Madge's. I love that they are both coming out with CDs the same month.

I love Madonna to the point where I know all the lyrics to album cuts (like "White Heat" for instance), but I feel like there's too much going on in this song. I think the blame lies with Timbaland. His beats used to be special, and now he just gives them away. Also, everything he does is starting to sound exactly the same. Its almost a parody of one of his songs. I can't fault Madge for jumping on the Timbo bandwagon. Her last album was amazing and barely got radio play, so she has to do what she has to do to get back on the air. I like the song enough, but I'm hoping the rest of Hard Candy blows me away.

Ronnie Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

RayT Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 02:55 PM EST

I was just as disapointed as you to find out she was working with Timbaland. How do you go from William Orbit and Mirwais to the most overused producer in modern music? I'm also mildly dismayed to hear that the first single off Hard Candy prominently rhymes "wait" and "hesitate" and makes use of "tick tock tick tock" in exactly the same ways that "Hung Up" did

birdgirl39 Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 02:45 PM EST

I thought she was on the "Earth-Goddess-Mommy" kick. Make up your mind.....write a children's story or sleaze around on the ground, grinding to techno music. One or the other, lady.

FormerWannabe Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

I grew up LOVING Madonna. Memorized every dance routine by practicing to Betamax copies of the "Virgin Tour" and "Live Aid" in my parents' living room. Had the "Madonna" poster in my dollhouse! Dressed liked M in Desperately Seeking Susan for Halloween in college- repeatedly mistaken for a hooker. Loved "Like a Prayer", "Erotica", "Ray of Light" and "Music". She lost me at "American Life" by rapping (!)about Pilates and Lattes. When she went on tour using an electric chair, I was done. Anyhoot- love the old music. Keep hoping for a return to form. But a superbuff granny (hate the hair) can be an a--hole too, kids. I am looking forward to JTimberlake's input. Maybe he can get her to lighten up again.

c Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

Can't wait for HARD CANDY!

GOB Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

I was excited... until I heard "4 Minutes." What a disappointment. It doesn't even sound like Timbaland. It sounds like bad, trying-too-hard imitation Timbaland. YUCK. It's probably her worst single in a decade, maybe of all time. I hope there's better stuff on the album. I'm still irritated that Confessions was so ignored by radio. It was some of her best, most catchy pop music ever.

Martin Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

Michael,
"4 Minutes" is a grower, not a shower - trust me. You're going to LOVE "Miles Away" and "Give It 2 Me."

I can't wait. 4 Minutes is more fun that anything else on pop radio right now, and has a very Bedtime Stories vibe about that I like.

I'm not feeling this one. The beats sounds just like the one Timbaland did for Flo Rida's "Elevator"

underthefan Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

"4 minutes" may not be a radical step forward, but for all the madonna doubters here, check out her song "miles away." i guarantee it will get you exciteb about the album!

Julia Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

Looks like I'm in the minority here, but I LOVE this song.

Also, whether or not you think his current work is really innovative or original, Timbaland's beats SELL. Madonna kind of needs a big hit in the States, not just Europe where she consistently sells well, to justify her continued commercial viability. Choosing to work with JT, Timbaland, and Kanye West might be preditable, but it's good business sense, something Madonna's got in spades.

people are reading into this too much. the song does the trick. it came on in a club this weekend, and everyone danced like hell to it. that's what madge is aiming for. yes, it could use a bridge of sorts to make it have more of an arc and a kick, but it's still a good song.

I die a little inside every time I hear about ANOTHER pop icon taking the safe route and jumping on the hip hop bandwagon. It's a boring and predictable move, and it renders their music virtually indistinguishable from the countless other melody-deprived tracks I hear in the clubs. Granted, it took me a while to grow into "Confessions," which wasn't particularly heavy on the melody either. For now I'm just hoping that "4 Minutes" is not symptomatic of a larger boringness problem for the "Hard Candy" album as a whole. Because I heard it in WeHo and I was dancing to it with my BEST friends...drunk...surrounded by hotties...and STILL bored.

I am also dissapointed that she's working with Timbaland. It's like after Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake found success with him - she just jumped on the bandwagon. And way too late! So many people have worked with him since 2006.

She was always one to lead not follow.

BilliamE Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

Although I like the song, I do agree that it lacks any re-inventiveness that Madonna and Timbaland have been previously known for. I don't know if I'm more dissappointed in Madonna or Timbaland though... Ever since his pop transformation I've been less than impressed. Remember when he produced Aaliyah's 'Are You That Somebody' and there was a collective "what the hell was that?!!" Well, that is gone...

right now i like it, but i can't tell if more listens will result in me loving it or hating it. does that make any sense? most annoying part of the song? that whole "ma-DON-na!" thing. yuck.

Julie Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

I have already pre-ordered the album, so yes, I am excited. I love the song, because it is easy to dance to and it's Madonna. I happen to like Timbaland and JT, and have been a fan of Madonna's since Like A Virgin, the three of them seems like a good match. I tend to listen to music that I enjoy and don't dissect it, sure there are aspects that could probably be better, but, hey, it is Madonna! Enjoy!

Chad Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

4 minutes could have been done by Justin T. and "nameless girl" just rattlin names off on here...nelly furtado, keri hilson....

Tom Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

Michael, I'm surprised you're ragging on poor Madonna. I think there is more excitement for Hard Candy than there was for Confessions. I really like the song, and I think this album will be a big hit for her. The pre-sales have been through the roof.

Lynny Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

They played this at the club last weekend. Probably the most perfect place to hear a new Madonna song and all I thought was, "Ehhh". It is fine, but nothing special at all. I love Madonna, but hope her other new songs will be a bit more imaginative.

I'm with you. The whole thing reeks of desperation.

Rasha Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

I've never been a true Madonna fan. Her "Ray of Light" era was fun, but she comes off as arrogant, faux-British and irritating now. I too was disappointed when I heard Justin was working with her, because I really love him. I do feel that the horns in "4 Minutes" are overpowering, especially for Madonna. I also think Justin sounds 10 times better than she does.

I was intrigued by the pairing, but ultimately disappointed, because it's not anything new or uber-cool. It's just kind of...predictable.

NineDaves Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

critics and radio alike seemed against "4 minutes." me? i kind of love it. i realize that justin and madonna's vocals seem buried behind the beat, but madonna has never been the best singer anyway. the song didn't thrill me on first listen, but now i can't get it out of my head. i don't know... maybe i'm just hungry for some new pop music...

MCZ1026 Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 01:06 PM EST

Great article. I'm not in love with "4 Minutes", and I agree that the vocals are drowned, but I'm sure after a few more plays on the old IPOD, I'll be loving it. As for the balance of the album, I am really excited for it, and that has nothing to do with her choice of collaborative partners. It has to do with the fact that Madonna is Madonna, and she makes her own decisions and creative choices (excellent ones for the past 25+ years) and that's enough for me to be thrilled! I must admit, I think she's a bit of a sell out for going with Timbaland, etc., but chances are it will be her talent shining through on the album, and no one else. Let's hope we're all not disappointed!

Catherine Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

I'm just so sad that she choose to work with Timbaland...and being a fan of hers since I was 4 and a fan of JT since a few years now, I seem to have the same non-excitment for this new album...We'll see on April 29th.

MOI Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

Am I excited? No.
Same old, same old.

Jen Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

The song isn't completely tragic...it just seems I've heard this song before. I mean aren't there any producers out there besides Timbaland? And isn't Madonna the self-proclaimed reinventing artist? Using the same producer as everyone else hardly qualifies as being original.
