A real 'Beverly Hills, 90210' spinoff (as opposed to 'Dancing With the Stars')

Mar 13, 2008, 10:43 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Deals, Television, To Care or Not to Care, Waiting, Who Else Remembers This?

The CW has fast-tracked the pilot for a contemporary spinoff of Beverly Hills, 90210. Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas is considering penning said pilot — acceptable. It may or may not include any of the original characters — not acceptable. Right?

Who would you like to see return? I'm pulling for Brandon Walsh, if only so Jason Priestley will recreate the double fist pump from the show's opening (below). Years ago, I used to watch morning Buffy the Vampire Slayer repeats on FX, and 90210 followed it. I would literally do the double fist pump with Priestley, then change the channel. Every morning.

Boarding Schools Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 02:02 AM EST

Boarding schools are of many types like all-boys boarding school, all-girls boarding school, co-ed boarding school, college prep boarding school etc. The main motive of all the schools is to give a beautiful career to each and every student.

Bring back jason priestley[ Brandon walsh] Jennie garth[kelly taylor]Brian Green {david silver] Tori spelling [donna matin] kathleen robrtson [claire arnold] tiffani thiessan [valerie malone] ian ziering steve sanders gabrielle carties [andrea zuckerman] jesse vasques in the spinnoff please put the original cast members and continue with their lives don't bring new castmates because they will never be as good as the original 90210 castmates. i love the originalo cast members not the new ones. i want kelly and brandon to get married this time because they are soulmates and belong together because kelly was more happier with brandon than anyone else and it showed they really loved eachother and are meant for eachother.

I think that the show should have the original cast including Brenda, and I can't wait to see it! Please, Please Please bring it back! I have been buying all the seasons that have been put out on DVD so far and I cant wait to see more!

Dave Fri, Mar 21, 2008 at 07:58 PM EST

The show sounds more like a remake rather than a newer/fresher zip code built around the original show. I would totally watch if Shannen Doherty becomes apart of it.
Since it pretty much sounds like a remake; does that mean that Annie will leave the show after 4 seasons, as Brenda did?

christy Fri, Mar 21, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

I think all the original people should come back, because it would not be worth watching if they have a new version and new people. I thought that andrea and brandon should have gotten together.

Chelsea D. Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

Don't David and Kelly share a little sister? Maybe it'll be her the show centers around...

Shannon Doherty probably needs the work, I'd love to see Brenda again. The show was never the same after she left, I hated Dylan with Kelly, Brenda and Dylan were so much better. Kelly was way better with Brandon...

Shirl Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 04:26 PM EST

Good god Donna Martin!

To Roman Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 06:48 AM EST

Spin-off's sometimes work very well...The Jefferson's, Frasier, Rhonda, Melrose Place (came from 90210), The Simpson's, Private Practice (which I hate, BTW)...just saying, it's easier to remember the flops, but spin-off's do work sometimes.

Kelley Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 06:42 AM EST

Love the fist pump too! I always do it on the credits. Now, I'm all for a spin off if it involves the original cast. It doens't need to be random cousins or peeps we've never heard of. It should be Donna and David's kids, Kelly and Dylan's kids- so what if technically not enough time has gone by for their kids to be in high school...it's TV people.

to NineDavies Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 08:33 PM EST

It won't involve Andrea unless they make it a new version of the Golden Girls. She was like 40 back in 1990, how old is she now???

Rebekah Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 06:54 PM EST

I hope they bring the real people back. It wouldn't be worth watching with at least some of them. I would have to say I would love it with everyone, but Dylan and Kelly would be my choice. I already watch it on Soapnet every night, this would be so cool.

SDA333 Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

Just bring back Veronica. Man, I miss that show....

StaleCake Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 03:08 PM EST

They should hire Shannen Doherty right now -- and then after she quickly becomes intolerable, fire her and replace her with Rose McGowan. Wait....

Winona Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

And I just played the first four seconds of that video... glad to hear I'm not the only, erm, fist-pumper.

As for the spin-off... no thanks. I don't think I'm ready for 90210: The Next Generation.

monica Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

i never watched 90210, but I like Jenny Garth so I would watch it if she were in it. I don't like Shannen Doherty though, so I'll pass if she is. Too bad Lindsay Price ("Lipstick Jungle") and Vanessa Marcil ("Las Vegas") are busy.

GA Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

This could be a great if it's done right. It sounds more like a remake than a spinoff. I'd love for Shannen to be apart of it. And I agree the opening is amazing! I always loved the Brenda/Donna high-five/handshake thing at the end (of the season 2, 3) version).

Kimi Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

LOVE the double fist pump. I used to watch it and turn it off, too.

Anne Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

Love 90210. Loved it in prime time. Loved it when it came on 6 times a day on FX (watching the reruns made my maternity leave 6 years ago) and love it on soapnet. Would give the spin off show a chance, so long as Dylan and Steve get air time.

Bethann, I am with you. I never liked the Tori Spelling sandwich complete with Dylan ear nuzzle. Gross.

Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

That would be great. Luke Perry guested on What I Like About You (Jennie Garth's show) and they were great. I would love to see all the old characters in present day!

To Roman Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

Not true - Degrassi: The Next Generation did exactly this concept (the teens are now the parents), and is a hit worldwide, even bigger than the first Degrassi. If they got a showrunner from Degrassi, and Darren Starr, this could kick a**.

StaleCake Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

Bring back ANDREA as the matriarch of the show. She must be like 78 or 79 years old now right?

StaleCake Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

Bring back BRENDA! As a hard-livin', boozy, sexaholic, woman in her 40's, played by Shannon Doherty. Failing that, Miley Cyrus could also do that role perfectly.

Bethann Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

Hey BOTR--LOVE the idea of Erin Silver being the new "Kelly" of the show. That would be genius! As far as anyone returning, the 1st thing I thought of was Brandon as the newspaper advisor. I barely remember the series finale except for Donna and David's wedding. But Erin could be living with Donna and David for some reason. That would leave doors open for other past characters to come back for guest spots. As far as the opening goes--BEST SHOW OPENING EVER!! I've been watching Season 3 on DVD and I watch the opening EVERY time. The opening chords are so great. But I have to say the creepiest part for me is Donna's little bit where she's standing with David on one side and Dylan nuzzling her ear on the other side and then you see Steve walking towards her. There is a lot of ickiness that conjurs up!!

Ellipsian Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

Merely "acceptable", Mandi?! Really!? Rob Thomas is something of a genius in my mind (I'm totally with you and the "Veronica" love, Roman, though "Buffy" is my fave-ever show) and I certainly trust him to create something worthy of our (and his) time.

marilinda Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

so glad that i am not the only one who enjoys the double fist pump. almost as great as luke perry's double eyebrow pump!

that opening is killer. except for cindy potter's jack-o-lantern smile. creepies.

Sina Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

Please let it be Kelly and Brandon's daughter going to a new school with Donna and David's son. Andrea could be a teacher at the school with her kid going there also. Brandon could be a newspaper editor and Kelly and Donna could be working in a fashion store. I would watch that especially if Rob Thomas make Brandon and Kelly's daughter like a Veronica clone and David and Donna's son into a Logan clone. I need to see my LoVe

Roman Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

I'm gonna go against the majority on here and say that this is most likely a bad idea. I love Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars is my favorite show in the history of the world) and 90210 is undoubtedly one of the greatest teen shows ever created. However, spin-offs just don't work that well (See: Joey, Golden Palace), so I think this could possibly be doomed from the get-go. Also, the CW really needs to actually try and find something original to put on the air if they don't want to be destined as the netlet of castoffs forever. However, if Rob Thomas does indeed end up penning this, I'll probably still tune in for at least the pilot.

Chelsea Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

I'm all for it as long as they erase the utter ridulousness it was for Kelly and Dylan to end up together...they broke my Brenda/Dylan shipping heart! :(

Meghan Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

Well considering I tivo two episodes of 90210 everyday, I'd definitely be up for watching a spin off! Dylan forever.

melissa Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

This could go either way for me. The show had a good run but we're, what, eight years out? Yet somehow I STILL catch my husband whistling the theme song.

snarky Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

Luke Perry needs work. I heart Dylan!

Vicky Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Holy crap! That opening is a minute and half long!! It never ended. Loved the fist pump though!

Working Girl Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. I want - nay, demand - the return of any regular prior from the high school era, and I reject the return of anyone who became a regular in or after CU (I'm talking to you, Noah and Matt).

Abby Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

I park myself on the eliptical everyday at the gym and tune in on the SOAP Network. I freaking LOVE this show. But once they got to college and Brenda left it got worse. The high school episodes are the best hands down.

P.S. I would totally tune in to a spin-off.

Vance Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 11:48 AM EST

someone just emailed me about this earlier today. I thought it was a joke.

A bad bad joke.

Lyn Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

Oh my gosh- my guy friends are the BH 90210 boys grown up. I am so lame.

BOTR Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

"I don't know how many HS sophomores-seniors can be realistically be the children of the original cast."

The closest to this is Andrea's daughter Hannah that was born at the end of the fourth season, but she would be only 14. Also, don't forget Kelly and David's sister Erin was born in '92 which would make her 15-16 years old, perfect for this spin-off.

Elizabeth Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

Well, lets be realistic if we're bringing back the original cast/characters. I don't know how many HS sophomores-seniors can be realistically be the children of the original cast. Its bad enough that soap operas send 8 year olds off to boarding school in the fall and they return at Christmas as brooding 16-year olds facing an unwanted pregnancy or something like that.

alissa Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

let donna martin graduate

GeeMoney Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 11:18 AM EST

Can't they just make a spin-off show called "Brenda: Why did your character leave 90210" and make it all about her? I swear, 90210 was never the same after Shannen Doherty left.

JoeC Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

Unless Shannen Doherty(Brenda Walsh) is there, then this is a bad idea. Without her 90210 was just another bad Aaron Spelling show. Bring back Brenda!

melissa Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

do you have an address for Rob Thomas so I can send a letter and personally beg him to write this?

Nick Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 11:10 AM EST

Rob Thomas back in action. AWESOME. I'm there solely for that reason.

Nix Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

I second the Brenda return.

NineDaves Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

so help me, if this is an andrea zuckerman or steve sanders spinoff, i am going to cry myself to sleep ever night. don't mess with perfection, please! the only was i would watch this is if it featured brenda coming back to beverly hills and teaching at west beverly. that i would watch. she'll teach theater after her long and illustrious stage career in london. she'll introduce herself to the class by doing a dramatic reading of rem's "losing my religion." it'd be great.

drella66 Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 10:09 AM EST

It appears that god has actually been listening to my prayers afterall...
I still heart this show more then anything ever, I have the final episode saved in my tivo for all eternity!
