Axl Rose responds to Dr Pepper's 'Chinese Democracy' offer

Axl Rose has come out of hiding the recording studio to respond to Dr Pepper's offer to donate a can of the fizzy soft drink to everyone in America — save Slash and Buckethead — should Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy, now in its 13th year of gestation, see the light of day in '08. The dreadlocked rocker issued a press release that was posted on the GN'R website yesterday:

We are surprised and very happy to have the support of Dr Pepper with our album Chinese Democracy, as for us, this came totally out of the blue. If there is any involvement with this promotion by our record company or others, we are unaware of such at this time. And as some of Buckethead's performances are on our album, I'll share my Dr Pepper with him.

So... is this a yes, Axl? We can expect to see Chinese Democracy in 2008? Here's a clock you can use to chart your progress.

I want my can of Dr. Pepper so bad I can almost taste it, just like the Chinese will be soon tasting the sweet nectar of Democracy. AXL we need you more now than ever!

It's funny how they've tied in an act that is so old and tired with a soda that tastes like carbonated prune juice. 'Nuff said?

Good one, Stephanie T! How about these lyrics, set to the tune of Paradise City: 'Take me down to Dr. Pepper City/ Where the taste is good/And the Aftertaste ain't any/Oh won't you please take me hoooooooooooooooome, chug-alug?

I think it means the oppostite... if he's going to share his Dr Pepper with Buckethead wouldn't it mean he's going to have a Dr Pepper that he'd only get by releasing the album in '08? Am I misunderstanding something here?

HAHA Colin. I often come to that exact realization.

Colin Fri, Mar 28, 2008 at 01:04 AM EST

I think there might actually be democracy in China before this album comes out.

"doctor paper" oops. I meant Dr. Pepper. I should not try to joke anymore.

Snsetblaze Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 04:44 PM EST

I laughed so hard at some of the poster's comments that I choked on my doctor paper and it came out through my nose. (Just kidding. Well not about the laughing part.)

I'm an Axel,he's an Axel, wouldn't you like to be an Axel too?

Ames Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 03:41 PM EST

Two points: 1. Axl actually spoke intelligibly. Granted, it was probably a press agent, but I assumed he'd just trash a hotel room when he heard about this.
2. Dr. Pepper must be a fun place to work. Who thought of this? And how did they get something so clever past middle management?

EP Sato Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

I too stopped caring about them. But they're one of those bands I keep hoping will make a comeback. But now, the free Dr Pepper initiative makes me really want this album to be released.

Wouldn't Axl like to be a Pepper too?

Dtom Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

Um, I think this is a "no". If Axl is going to share his Dr Pepper (happy, Stacey?) with Buckethead, then he's implying that the album won't be released by the end of 2008. Makes no difference to me, though. I stopped caring about Guns n' Roses about 14 years ago.

SJ Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

Damn. Now I want a Dr Pepper.

Catherine Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 01:24 PM EST

Does anyone care anymore??? But I must admit I like Dr.Pepper humour!

Cara Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

He seems so hilariously bemused! I'm not sure he gets the joke :)

Stephanie T. Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

So Buckheads performances are still going to be on the album eventhough the new guitarist is Bumblefoot?

Stacey Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

OK, if you insist on covering this ridiculousness, at least PLEASE spell Dr Pepper correctly! There is no period after Dr in the proper name of the company.
