Exclusive: Hear the new 'Idol' exit song (by Ferras) first!

Feb 6, 2008, 01:44 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: American Idol, An EW Exclusive!, Music

Attention American Idol addicts: "Hollywood's Not America" is the new "Bad Day." Indeed, the piano-driven ballad by Ferras, whose debut album Aliens & Rainbows will hit stores this spring, will be the soundtrack by which sobbing, devastated contestants make their exits during Hollywood Week on Idol (Feb. 12 and 13). And lucky for you, Ferras was crazy nice enough to drop by the Idolatry studios and perform "Hollywood's Not America" smack in the middle of the EW.com cubicles. Ch-ch-check out his performance below — before 30 million other folks jump on the Ferras bandwagon next week!

Also, while you're in Idol mode, catch our latest, loopiest installment of Idolatry, the one we like to call "The Cougar (Disguised as a Leopard)." Annie Barrett staggers, Dawnie Walton raises the roof, and I use the phrase "glistening biceps." Come on, in the middle of a writer's strike, how can you resist? (Watch it after the jump.)

love his voice!
love the song!
plus he had to just sit down and sing and play the piano right in the middle of a bunch of cubicles!

OMIGOSH! Ferras is an amazing singer! This is my favorite song! And, yes, if Ferras was on American Idol he would win!

mercedes Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 01:29 AM EST

in response to dan, one couldn't argue that hollywood is america, it's only commercial america, and that's not real america.

Wasn't this kid on a mtv show, with that singer ryan cabera?

winnerspotter Thu, Feb 7, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

Sensational vocals, and live, to boot. Sophisticated arrangement and tune, superb keyboard playing, and cute. Good thing for our Idol aspirants he's not competing on AI!! Ummm, what's going to happen when it's a guy that got the boot and we're hearing "put your bluejeans back on, girl..."??

Dan Thu, Feb 7, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

That's a nice song, but... Too bad the sentiment is off. One might argue that Hollywood IS America.

jason Thu, Feb 7, 2008 at 07:14 AM EST

i like it. i really like his voice, the CD will do well, and of course he's got a guaranteed spot on the finale'.

Idolatry is hilarious, and I don't even watch American Idol. Annie and Dawnie and Kristen Baldwin (bring her back!) make me a laugh every time. Keep up the good work!

Compared to the EW offices/cubes, I work in a cave!

Land of Nod Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 08:28 PM EST

Whoa...Annie's cube rules

Tino Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 07:57 PM EST

Song was okay. A little boring. What's up with that scarf though?

KG Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 06:08 PM EST

i like the song, but i'm sure i'm gonna get sick of it some time in march

love the bearded conan cameo at the beginning of the performance

Laura Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

I'm in love.

...with Slezak, obviously, but also with this guy and this song. It won't make me watch Idol but I'll check out his CD for sure.

daisyj Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

Is it sad that I was jealous of their cubicles? Wood paneling and smoked-glass windows-- sweet!

Nose Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

Elizabeth: that would be awesome. Sign my company up for his office tour. I didn't love the song, but just imagine having a guy playing a piano next to your cube for the day. That would be a nice break in the monotony.

Bandwagon Jumper Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

I am going to hate this song in mere moments but it's rather nice (today). I hope he makes a mint from this... maybe to buy a house or two to wrap up in his oversized scarf.

I am also happy to finally see an image of Slezak!

Cara Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

Whoa, that was pretty polished for a live performance...color me impressed. Also, he's pretty cute, which really doesn't hurt my assessment. I'm a sucker for piano-playing ballad kids.

Elizabeth Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

Is he up for a tour of offices w/ cubicles? I'd love to plunk him down inbetween all my 'considerate' neighbors here.

Snarf Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

All the exit songs are slow to up the angst. If they could make it rain inside the building where they film they would.

daisyj Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

That's a really good song. I hope I'm not sick of it in three weeks.

Sally in Chicago Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

love his voice. How come all the exit songs are "slow"?

Kristi Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 02:12 PM EST

I just jumped on the bandwagon, great voice, great song! I know a lot of stars (um like judges on American idol trying to make a comeback) could take a lesson from this actual singer, not only did he do it in the middle of some cubicles in an office, obviously with no producing and no lip synching, imagine that, genuine good singing talent! Great job, love him already!

Rachel K Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 01:55 PM EST

This was great! I loved how he just plunked down in the middle of the cubicles and busted out with his song.
