PopWatch Duel: James Roday vs. Dulé Hill

Jan 11, 2008, 09:08 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: An EW Exclusive!, PopWatch Duel, Television

Psyche_l We love two things here on PopWatch: lists and the debates that follow them. And so, we've created the PopWatch Duel. Here's how it works: We'll ask two celebs for their picks on a certain topic. You'll decide whose responses are better by casting a vote in the comments section. (They'll try to tell themselves that they don't care who wins.)

In honor of Psych's return tonight with the first of six new episodes (Fridays, 10 p.m., USA) we asked stars James Roday (left) and Dulé Hill (right) to name the five pop-culture mysteries they'd like solved.

Their responses...

James Roday:

1. Look. Clearly I can appreciate the value of pop-cultural phenomena. They help us define the landscape of entire decades and give us easy gateways to the type of nostalgia that keeps parties going well after the punch is gone—not to mention the fact that without it, MTV and VH1 might have to dissolve themselves at the risk of actually having to air music videos again. All this being said, HOW MANY TIMES MUST WE BEAR WITNESS TO THE EBBS AND TIDES OF THE LIFE OF PARIS HILTON? For the love of all things holy, at least Britney was a Mouseketeer. Plus, she sold about a gazillion records and was worshiped by every 11-year-old girl in America for an entire calendar year. Paris has managed to grab headline after headline for essentially screwing up, getting screwed, endangering lives, refusing to eat for YEARS now. She's yet to bring ANYTHING to the table and yet she remains on the tip of the tongues and points of the pens of every pop-culture journalist in the country. We do such a lousy job of choosing our celebrities in this country it should be no mystery that we have no clue how to go about electing our leaders either.

2. Oh where have ye gone Kerri Green? You were literally conducting the pop-culture train for a second in the '80s— you epitomized and set the girl-next-door standard in Lucas AND The Goonies! C'mon, Three For the Road wasn't THAT bad. Then poof(!) you disappeared from our lives forever. You don't write, you don't call—was it something we said? It was Molly Ringwald, wasn't it? She paid you off to walk away. We know Jake from Sixteen Candles is happy and making furniture. All we want is a little teeny bit of closure here.

3. How many shots does Dane Cook get? Just wondering.

4. Why did we choose VHS over Beta? Seriously, the players were smaller and less cumbersome. The tapes were smaller and you could rent twice as many and still fit them in one bag. For a society that always wants MORE at the height of its descent into consumerism overdrive, we chose big ass clunky VHS tapes. Weird.

5. MENUDO. They're STILL around. It's like version 29.0. The Atlanta Braves of pop music. Doesn't matter who's on the team. It just doesn't matter. They still get it done...and in Spanish no less. I don't understand it, but I'll salute the model. That's right. I salute Menudo.

Dulé Hill:

1. Sean Combs has changed his name five thousand, three hundred, and 1/24th times. What will the next incarnation of Puff Daddy...uh, Puffy...er, P. Diddy...sorry, Diddy's name be?

2. How did Kris Kross convince millions of teenagers to wear their clothes backwards?  I mean, that was the dumbest s--- ever. Then again if that happened in 2008, they would probably have their own clothing line.

3. Why didn't Winona Ryder just pay?

4. How exactly did Prince come up with Tara Leigh Patrick’s other name?  Carmen Electra?!  Where did that come from?

5. Did Martin Sheen really never win an Emmy for his portrayal of President Bartlet on The West Wing?  They couldn’t find one to give to Martin Sheen?!? I’m just saying.

6. The bonus question: How did Dulé Hill come up with these great pop-culture mysteries when he is not even into pop culture???? I guess some things we will never know... some things, we will never know.

Okay, PopWatchers, who wins the duel? James Roday or Dulé Hill? Vote now!

Shontih Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 02:29 AM EST

I, of course, must give major props to Dule. You, sir, are absolutely brilliant. Simple and still so right. I have to give this one to James, though. His list was really quite perfect from Dane Cook to Kerri Green. His number 1 also struck quite a chord. Though I have actually met Paris and found her to be surprisingly kind and, even more surprising yet, fairly intelligent, her fame is mind-boggling. How can we pay her salary in tabloids and scrutiny when she does naught but say "that's hot"? It astounds me to this day though, as said, our choice in leadership does not. Cannot at this point.

ObsessionHopper Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

It's so tough. I loved them both, but I really have to go with James on this one for VHS over Beta.

Although Dule's "Kris Kross" argument almost got me.

I think they both win.

Ali Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 09:12 PM EST

I love them both and they both had perfect answers, but I'm going to give this one to Dule. Especially for the nod to President Bartlett!

RP: As for the format war, Beta didn't last because Sony killed their own format by refusing open up the technology to other companies. They aren't making the same mistake this time around with Blu-Ray.

Mo Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

It was tough - wanted to give it to James for his number one, but Dule got me with the Martin Sheen thing. DULE!

Fatima Tue, Jan 15, 2008 at 01:56 AM EST

James for the Dane Cook comment

Laura Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 02:09 PM EST

Dule. Seriously, kids wore their clothes BACKWARDS.

RP Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 09:21 AM EST

I pick James Roday.

Solving the VHS vs Beta question would really help us out since we're in the middle of another format war now with high definition DVDs. If we can learn from the mistakes of the past we can avoid making another!

Also, the Atlanta Braves comparison in #5 makes up for #3.

Mike Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:23 PM EST

Hill. And ONLY because I agree with him regarding Martin Sheen. Honestly. The best show to have aired on TV in 20 years and the guy who was born to play President Bartlet didn't win once in seven years?

I am a big fan of Psych and was drawn to it to see how Dule would do in a comedic role. After seeing him as Charlie on The West Wing it was tough, but he definitely pulls it off. Well done.

And James Roday is probably the best comedic actor on TV right now. His timing is excellent, and he plays the role perfectly.

Kim Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

James wins by a hair. EW how about a TV Watch for Psych? I have watched the show from the beginning and it never lets me down. It is hilarious. I have turned many people on to it and now they are hooked.

Sue Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

Dule...hands down

Kacie Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

Roday. Funny,true,lengthy.

Carrie Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

I dunno who wins the pop culture debate. I couldn't get past how weird James looks in that picture. Did he hire Zac Efron's make-up artist or something?

nattydread Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

Dule. Funny -- and concise.

Gabby Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

Dule Hill, fo'sho.

kat Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

Best mystery belongs to Dule for #3, but overall list I have to give to James.

Vickie Ann Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 03:22 AM EST

Gotta go w/James on this due to the Paris Hilton comment but so agree about Martin Sheen. Dule' was excellent on West Wing, too.
Side note: is Celebrity Poker ever coming back to Bravo?

K Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:00 PM EST

Roday.

Pauline Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

Dule - because he is so right about Martin Sheen.

monica Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

this is sad. i have to go with james because i freaking love Sixteen Candles and I've always wanted to know what happened to Jake. I mean, it's freaking Jake.

Becca Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

i say its a draw, both raise some very good points (except james roday is wrong about dane cook. dane cook is hilarious). & IM SO HAPPY PSYCH IS BACK ON!!! yay hilarious crime solving on friday nights!! woot woot!

Megan Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Definitely Roday!

I love Psych, one of the best shows on tv right now :)

Tiana Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

Dule forever! (because of #3)

kate Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

Tough choice. Roday's Hilton choice is a little dated. Her star has kind of faded since the jail thing and to my knowledge she never refused to eat.

But I still have to go with Roday, for asking the all important Dane Cook question.

lori Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

It's so hard to choose, because I love them both. (And seriously, I was late for work because I was watching Psych this morning.) However, James had me at Paris Hilton. Which is funny, because everyone else has had Paris Hilton.

Rachel K Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

While I appreciated both men's wit, particularly you James Roday, I agree with your beta vs VHS analysis, I have to give it to Dule Hill for mentioning The West Wing, best show on TV ever ... sorry, Psych. He wins for reminding me how awesome he was as Charlie Young on The West Wing, a cheap trick perhaps but effective none-the-less. Don't worry, James Roday, you still rock!

Big Bones Billy Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

James, hands down. Great question about Kerri Green. Seriously, take a "where are they now?" look at the cast of Goonies and explain how Kerri Green disappeared: Josh Brolin - starring in No Country For Old Men/American Gangster; Sean Astin - Lord of the Rings movies/24; Corey Feldman - Lost Boys/Stand By Me/80's cheeseball legend; Joe Pantoliano - Sopranos/The Matrix. Kerri Green - Lucas and then... disappeared. She wasn't even in the "Goonies R Good Enough" music video. And now she's 40.

Psych Rocks my Socks Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

I'm going to have to go with James although Dule had some good points but I hate Paris Hilton and it's nice to see I'm not the only one. And I love Pysch by the way.. it's friggen hilarious. Can't wait for tonights new episode!

rednikki Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

It's gotta be Dule. He's funny, and, more importantly, brief.

drella66 Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 02:30 PM EST

JAMES...
I liked both of there responses but you still cant make me think Psych is a good show...I dont know a single person in the entire world who watches it

Laura Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 02:20 PM EST

I'm voting for James for the whole Paris Hilton quote. Amen, dude, amen.

mikey Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

Dule gets my vote for "Psych" cast member I'd most like to hang out with, but James wins the duel. The mysteries of Paris, Kerri Green and Dane Cook are too much to overcome.

Strepsi Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

Roday for his Number 1. But I'm a little bit in love with both of them now.

kate Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 02:14 PM EST

While I loved both answers. Dule Hill has an edge with his #6 question. Anyone who can come up with a rocking top 5 list and not even be into the subject has my vote.

Kristen Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST

Both of these guys are amazing, but it goes to James. Love him! And after the Paris comments and the whole comment about electing leaders...win! I do agree with Dule with the whole Martin Sheen thing. I love me some James and Dule and I can't wait for the premiere tonight.

Kari Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

I've gotta go with James Roday, mostly for the Paris Hilton mystery. I don't think I'll ever understand that one.

Peggy Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

I'm going to have to give this one to James Roday, even though Dule Hill is pretty great for pointing out the shamefulness that is Martin Sheen's lack of an Oscar for West Wing. Where did Charlie go those last few seasons of the show? I missed him.

TV Addict Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

Nice job both of you!

James. VHS vs Beta. Informative. I didn't know this. Who's Kerry Green? Now I have to go on IMDB. Your thoughts on Paris and Dane Cook...awesome!

Dule aka the luckiest poker player ever: The Kris Kross thing...excellent. The Martin Sheen thing....loyal. The others? Lame. "Leave Wynona alone!"

James wins! James wins!

Andie Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

James Roday, for the Kerri Green comment alone.

Joy Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

Oh, I do love me some PSYCH! James wins this one hands down, although I do give Dulé kudos for the Winona question - so true.

jr Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:37 PM EST

this one is super difficult. love the show (USA is doing a marathon of Psych today YIPPEE!), love both guys. have to give it to roday tho simply cuz of his paris hilton/dane cook comments! omg!! tho, i liked dule's pdiddy, puff daddy, whatever comments. hilarious! can i split my vote?

Alyssa Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

Steph-That's Jenny Lewis, not Kerri Green

Cara Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:20 PM EST

I'm casting my vote for James Roday based solely on his first question. I've been wondering it for years, but I've never heard the Paris Hilton Question put that clearly.
...Maybe we should boycott her?

B. Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

Ooops...that was Dule's comment about Winona. I guess he gets my vote!

B. Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

Although I love Dule Hill's question about the many names of Sean Combs I HAVE to pick James' questions simply because I have wondered why didn't Winona pay and where have some the stars of tomorrow from the 80's have gone.

Steph Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

Is Kerri Green the same girl that was in the Wizard with Fred Savage...the one that is now the lead singer in a band or something? Okay - must go to IMDb - ugh!

cruzilla Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

Great popwatch entry! I may have to watch this show just because of it. Dule's #3 gets overall best, but Roday's is list is awesome.

kirshpgh Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

Roday, you may win this battle-- even with no mention of Chad Michael Murray

Meghan Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

James Roday, hands down. Although I resent him a little for it -- here I was, perfectly happy that the question of where Kerri Green is now had never entered my mind, and now I'm wondering! (Also, his #3 rules, haha.)

SJ Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 12:41 PM EST

aymzer -- Good catch! He was in "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken" with Gabrielle Anwar.

Oh, and I vote for Dulé because my husband and I are currently watching all the seasons of West Wing on DVD and agree that Martin Sheen was robbed!

Anna Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

I have to go with James - Paris rants, Dane Cook and Kerri Green? Fabulous! 5 pineapples out of 5. Dules was alo worthy but I have to give it to James!

Lena Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

I loved James and his hilarious rant about Paris Hilton---SO true. Maybe if this acting gig doesn't work out, he can be a guest commentator for Anderson Cooper? And I loved Dule's list because he pointed out the travesty that is Martin Sheen never winning an Emmy for his why-can't-HE-be-our-president role. It's absolutely neck and neck for me.

Ceballos Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

I'll go with Roday.

Even though I like the idea behind this item, I have a (completely unsolicited suggestion): Why not have the celebs give their thoughts on the same topic. As it is now, they're each just talking about whatever and it's come off as a bit random and unfocused and, as a result, hard to compare the two.

eliz.s. Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:55 AM EST

I can't stand his character on the show, but James Roday wins this round.

Melanie Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

James Roday!

aymzer Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

Jake from 16 candles seems to be on everyone's mind this week...Dalton is wondering where he is now. Maybe Dalton should read this blog, hmmm? Anyway, was "Jake" also the male lead in the "lady goes blind after jumping a horse into a pool" movie?

Gringo Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:42 AM EST

why didn't winona just pay? celebrities get so many things for free that she probably thought it just extended to everywhere.

i hate to be a b*tch, but, since it has become a pet peeve of mine, i must correct James' comment about Kerri Green driving the pop-culture train. i believe he meant to use 'figuratively' as opposed to 'literally'. :)

Leo Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

Love Dule and I'd vote for Bartlett in '08, but JR wins this one.

idigress Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

Dule! What about Martin Sheen? Seriously - he was fantastic on The West Wing.

ninjac8 Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

I have a couple pop mysteries I would like solved as well: Will Dule ever tap into his tap danc'n skillz on Psych? Will we ever find out how many cameos James has made in movies?

Emily Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:15 AM EST

James Roday

Tipper Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

James, just for the glorious rant about Paris Hilton ending in politics! How can you not love a train of thought like that? But, damn, neck and neck otherwise! So right! Both of them!

Cassie Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:12 AM EST

Dule Hill wins for his shout out to President Bartlett.

Shannon Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

James made some great points but I've actually asked myself every question on Dule's list so I vote for Dule. Please Networks and Studios- give into the writers. We all know they deserve it and life is so much better with shows like this.

Eva Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

Oooh, tough choice. The responses were all really funny. I give the edge to James because his choices seemed more random.

EW, please do more of these!!! This is a great idea.

luvhoney Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

Paris Hilton is trash.
Dane Cook is famous why?
And he also let me know what Jake from 'Sixteen Candles' is doing now. I was acutally wondering that the other day.

James wins

Fumi Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Both were extremely funny, but I would have to go with Dule. Number 3 is awesome.

carrie m Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 10:52 AM EST

I'm with James, for the Kerri Green one and for the comments about Paris. Although I did see Kerri Green on an old episode of ER - Juliana Margulies' (I know I spelled that wrong) last season and Maura Tierney's first.

Cariann Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 10:28 AM EST

I'm with James. (Not to mention that I wish I really was *with* James) ((even though that did not affect my answer)) (((much)))

Karen Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

Dule for sure. Just for the shout out to his West Wing co-star, Martin Sheen.

Jusa Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

Tough choice here, but it's gotta be my Jamie. He hit on more of the stuff I've wondered about. I have to give a shout-out to Dulé, though, for his Winona Ryder point.

Chris Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

While I agree completely with the outrage of a snubbed Martin Sheen (and props to Hill for getting to work on such an amazing show for so long), I have to vote for Mr. Roday. That kind of hyper-vitriolic ranting is the kind I like to see!

Aileen Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 10:14 AM EST

Dule. The answer is always Dule.

katie g Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

i'm voting dule...for the simple fact that i also CANNOT BELIEVE that martin sheen never won an emmy for the best show that was ever on television.
mmhmm

S Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 10:11 AM EST

Dule.

anna Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

im going with james for his enthusiasm.

Sara Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:59 AM EST

James just for the mention of Lucas! It taught me everything I needed to know about locusts...who knew they only came out every 17 years?

Jessica Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

James gets my vote

Jessica Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

James gets my vote

Heather Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

What did happen to Kerri Green? I'm with with James.

max Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:54 AM EST

roday, all the way.

GOB Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:51 AM EST

I love Psych. It's one of those shows where I wish I was part of that world... like Arrested Development, Veronica Mars, The Office. I wish I knew more people like these guys. I completely agree with the Dane Cook, Paris Hilton and Winona Ryder comments. It's refreshing to see a couple actors not afraid to step on other celebs' toes. EW should get Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin to do this.

Kel Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:48 AM EST

I love both of them! James Roday has more explaination for his questions, but Dule Hill made me laugh more. I gotta give Dule Hill the win on this one.

Ibis1996 Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:33 AM EST

I don't watch Psych, but my guess is these guys complement each other well. Both of their top fives are excellent, but I have to give the nod to Dulé Hill because I loved him on West Wing and the bonus question cracked me up.

Contessa Yvonne Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:28 AM EST

I love Psych. I love Dule Hill. I love James Roday. Who knew that Corbin "Arnie Becker" could be funny? However, I will say that I agree with Dule Hill about Sean Puffy Daddy/P Diddy/Diddy/Just Diddy Please perpetual name change. Just baffling.

And I concur with James Roday's confusion about the umpteenth configuration of Menudo. I recall with relish the ABC Saturday morning cartoon of Menudo [or was it just Ricky Martin flying down the slide in a hot pink shirt promoting "Menudo on ABC" during a cartoon block?] so I call it a draw.

Psych is a funny show and Dule and James are the comforting bookends at the end of a tumultuous week. Bravo to both of you!

GingerCat Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:22 AM EST

Dule Hill gets points for the sheer, hilarious simplicity of his #3, but I gotta say James Roday wins this one hands down. The Paris screed is priceless, I love that he gave a shout out to Kerri Green and dissed Dane Cook, and he makes a good point about Beta vs. VHS. Nice job, James!

Ames Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

This was a cute idea. I laughed more at James' comments, but I like Gus better on the show. I'll go with Dule since I don't need the pressure of competing with Kerri Green anymore. Stay gone Kerri! Give some other wholesome girls a chance.
