Happy Birthday, Pat Benatar! This blog is a battlefield!

Jan 10, 2008, 09:51 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Celebrity Birthdays, Dig it Out!, Music, Water cooler

Occasionally — and by that I mean whenever I can't decide whether to karaoke "We Belong" or "Love is a Battlefield" — I wonder which is Pat Benatar's best song.* Let's give her the gift of knowledge for her 55th birthday. Is it:

"We Belong"

or "Love Is a Battlefield"?

* Write-in votes for "Invincible," "Heartbreaker," "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," or "All Fired Up" (the song I'd demand be used for the training montage in the movie version of my life — if I ever do anything that constitutes "training") will be accepted. Even though you're wrong.

Hmmm...torn between 'Shadows of the Night' for pastoral beauty and 'Hell is for Children' for bad ass rock chick bangin!

drella66 Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

we belong

Megan Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Mandi, it is SO "We Belong." Although I admit the dancing and headgear for "Love Is a Battlefield" are quite compelling. Easiest to karaoke though? "Hit Me With Your Best Shot."

Before I put another notch
on my lipstick case...

Oh my god, Love Is a Battlefield, hands down. I love the romanticism of We Belong, but Love Is a Battlefield is the song that sticks in your craw, especially with that fabulous video to back it up!

Tuzo Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 03:43 AM EST

I'm going to have to go with Invincible on this one.

Amanda Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:49 PM EST

Heartbreaker - Hands down! I love We Belong - but Heartbreaker just plain rocks. I put Love is a Battlefield way down on my Benatar list.

Ray Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

My "Pat B Top 10 Countdown":
10-"Hell Is For Children" - As noted, makes "Luka" seem like a ditty.

9-"Love Is A Battlefield" - Mandi made the case already.

8-"We Belong" - Has indeed held up well due to Lite FM (see other Popwatch blog!)

7-"I Need A Lover" - Great cover of the Mellencamp tune...took the original and made it better!

6-"Little Too Late" - Catchy, "go-to-hell-loser!" song.

5-"We Live For Love" - Shows Pat's operatic skills well.

4-"Heartbreaker" - The song that put her on the map. Still an 80's classic!

3-"Hit Me With Your Best Shot" - Shows Britney's "Hit Me One More Time" as the bubblegum song it was. BS couldn't touch the master!

2-"Promises In The Dark" - Still love the last refrain, with it's almost subliminal "one-two-three-four" between "...innn the" and "daaark". With today's overproduced albums, you'll never hear anything like that again.

1-"Shadows Of The Night' - Great video, great song, extremely well performed. What's not to like?

Run Between the Raindrops. Love Love Love her! Happy Birthday

Martha Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 06:52 PM EST

If you want something to make you tear up and then hate yourself later, go with "We Belong." If you want some dancing that's so cheesy it's awesome, go with "Love is a Battlefield." If you want impressive high note-hitting, it's "Heartbreaker." Me? I'll take the tears of shame every time...

CitizenVA Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

For me it's either "Hell Is For Children" or "Shadows of the Night".

Nice that there's so much great stuff to choose from! But I wouldn't put "Love Is A Battlefield" even in the top 10!

overruled. Invincible rawks. close second: Sex as a weapon

Random537 Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

It's totally "Love Is A Battlefield."

Zod Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Pat Benetar's cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" is pretty gnarly.

"You Better Run" is her best

Kai- Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

Promises In The Dark is my all time favorite Pat Benatar song!

strickens_girl Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

Heartbreaker. Without a doubt, the best!

Nicie Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

For sure, You Better Run, Fire and Ice and Treat Me Right, but who doesn't have every second of Battlefield seared into their teenage consciousness, right?

Jess Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 03:37 PM EST

HEARTBREAKER.

canuck1975 Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 03:26 PM EST

Bratty kids vs DANCING EFFIN HOOKERS.

Like come on.

Battlefield is Pat's #1.. hands. down.

ChrisClassof1988 Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

Its a tie between love is a battlefield and Invincible....Pat is 55, now i feel old

ChrisClassof1988 Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Its a tie between love is a battlefield and Invincible....Pat is 55, now i feel old

Crystal Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 03:17 PM EST

Heartbreaker!

Broadway Baby Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 02:42 PM EST

When it comes to karaoke nothing can beat Love is a Battlefield but Shadows of the Night and Heartbreaker come pretty close.

shawn Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

Shadows of the Night all the way! Best. Benetar. Song. EVER!

Ryan Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST

You Better Run is my favorite Pat Benatar song.

Patrick Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 01:56 PM EST

As a life-long fan and fellow "Pat", my vote is for "You Better Run". Ferocious, quick, and sounding like she'll kick my butt.. as well as being the 2nd music video to ever air on MTV.

mark in nyc Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

Any Pat Benetar song is better then most crap out there today....cause she could actually sing.
I always a reminded of the lackof talent today when an American Idol "star" tries to sin gone of her songs.

Shadows of the Night is my Fav by the way, but her whole album is great.

athens99 Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

What, no Treat Me Right? Are you kidding me?

scottb Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

I always had a thing for Shadows Of The Night, although We Belong has held up pretty well. On a side note/misheard lyrics category I had a friend who thought "Stop Using Sex As A Weapon" was Stop Using Eggs As A Weapon. Makes sense to me.

kal Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 12:52 PM EST

c'mon hell i s for children is the best; makes Luka sound like a happy ditty. But seriously Heartbreaker is her best. Loved her in my teenage years.

Cinderella Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

Well, if "Invincible" doesn't count, then my vote has to go to "We Belong."

denny Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 12:38 PM EST

Overall, Heartbreaker is her best song. However, of these two, Love is a Battlefield wins hands down. Because it's infinitely more fun to dance to.

denny Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

Overall, Heartbreaker is her best song. Of these two, Love is a Battlefield wins, hands down. It's not that We Belong is a bad song, but it's just a little bit boring next to the supreme eighties-ness of Love is a Battlefield.

garciamomma Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

Definitely "Heartbreaker". I loved it in my teens an it's one of my 9 yr olds favorites........she 5 starred it in my iPod........and its fun to watch a 9 yr old sing it at the top of her lungs

ChrisChicago Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 12:27 PM EST

I'm gonna go with "Invincible" because of the awesomeness that is The Legend of Billie Jean! I cannot listen to that song without remembering how much I loved that cheesy movie in the 80's.

mymagoogle Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:59 AM EST

I always liked La Bel Age

Katie Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

I'm going with "Love is a Battlefield", for sure. I'm a big "Shadows of the Night" fan also, though!

maryb Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

Get Nervous.

Kathleen Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

Um, hello? "Hell is for Children," yo. Thank you, Mary Anne. :)

bill Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

Love is a Battlefield.

Tamara Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:27 AM EST

Love these suggestions, and they're making me regret that I don't own the woman's entire oeuvre. So good! Happy b-day, Ms. Benatar!

Judy Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:23 AM EST

I second "Promises in the Dark"!!

Susan Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

Are you *%$@D& serious?

lala1215 Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

Love is a battlefield= better video; We Belong = better song of the two...but really Heartbreaker tops them all.

Stephanie T. Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

"Promises in the Dark" is one of her finest songs because it showed off her voice control. Opera trained bad-assed singer. Happy B-day Miss Benetar.

JohnO Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:06 AM EST

We Belong is the best ballad, while All Fired Up is the best up tempo song.

Mary Anne Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:02 AM EST

What no "Hell is for Children?"

Connie Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 11:00 AM EST

It is my birthday as well (seriously) and I vote for Heartbreaker. Sorry Mandi, I win because Pat and I share a special birthday bond.

MCM Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

Love is a Battlefield rocks, and is one of those 'it takes me back there' songs, but We Belong is more powerfully moving and uplifting to me, so I'll have to vote for that.

Ames Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

Choosing btw the two I take "Love is a Battlefield". But her best song is "Heartbreaker". You do NOT want to be in the car with me when that song comes on.

GeeMoney Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 10:39 AM EST

My favorites are "Love Is A Battlefield" and "All Fired Up", but if I had to choose, I would pick the first one. Benatar rocks!

Ceballos Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

I'll go with "We Belong", if only for "The Office" episode in which Kelly serenates a horrified Ryan with a karaoke version of the song ("We belong together....Ryan."

joopiter Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

I've always been partial to "No You Don't" and "Shadows of the Night" but if I had to choose between those two it would be "Love is a Battlefield."

BLM Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

Pat Benetar rocks! The better song is "Love is a Battlefield" -- it's very epic and the epitome of the 80s. The better video is also "Love is a Battlefield" for the awesome dance sequence that ends with a drink in the face. Pat's a bad-ass!

Silv Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 10:17 AM EST

"Love is a Battlefield." The video combines defiant grrrl attitude with '80s over the top tongue in cheek. Or was that tongue in chic?

kats Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 10:16 AM EST

"We Belong" is the better of the two. "Shadows Of The Night" is my personal favorite though.

Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

Those songs are crap! The only good Benatar is early Benatar. Check out the video for "Shadows of the Night." It's like a mini-movie!

Winona Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 09:58 AM EST

"We Belong" - if only for the WTF green gloves she's wearing in the video.
