I appreciate civility and courtesy as much as the next person, but I think included in civility is the ability to not take issue with a slip-up. Diane Keaton has always appeared nervous when speaking live, but it's not like she's making a career of public obscenity.

I stupidly gave in to my 9 year old on New Year's Eve, and agreed that he and his 6 year old brother could watch some of South Park. They'd seen the "cartoon kids" in ads and were dying to see what the show was like. I figured it's basic cable, they have to bleep the stuff out. If the content gets too out of hand, I'll change the channel. So, like an idiot, I switched to South Park. Within seconds, a stream of profanity that would make Katie, Diane and most sailors blush, was unleashed--unedited. Did I flood Comedy Central with complaints? No-It's South Park and it was 10:30pm. I'm the idiot here. So what I'm saying is if we all take responsibility for what we let in our homes, maybe the government can concentrate on the big issues like where our soldiers are or how best to get New Orleans back on its feet. Or maybe fix the problems with the economy. Stuff the gov is better at doing than me. I can censor, or not, in my own house. The FCC is pretty useless anyway.

The whole Katie Couric thing is a non issue since it was said off camera. Diane on the other hand I take issue with. However I know she could care less so anything said would not change her mindset on how she speaks on tv or anywhere else. As for free speech,people don't morally have the right to use obsenities in a public forum where children might overhear. You might disagree but whatever.It's selfish and arrogant to not care about other people when you speak or act.It's not being uptight to not want your children exposed to certain language and myself for that matter. There's a difference between being politically correct and having a civil tongue. Now that's the day I can't wait for, when civility and common courtesy come back!!

Okay, Katie's been in the biz long enough to know that anything you say into a live mike and a hot camera could easily be captured and sent out onto the net. In her case, she apparently feels confident enough to act as she does without worrying that this might affect her image. She should run straight to Letterman and get some mileage out of it!

Diane Keaton, on the other hand, is not a broadcast pro. She's a movie person where every blown line gets a retake. Even though TV may not be her primary element, she DOES know where the line is on TV. She must have been feeling pretty loose about the whole segment to have let the F-bomb fly. (Why don't the morning shows use a digital delay?)
