'Friday Night Lights' recap: Kyle Chandler needs an Emmy

Jan 12, 2008, 06:00 AM | by Ken Tucker

Categories: 'Friday Night Lights', Mini TV Watch

Gaius_l If Friday Night Lights was a big ol’ ratings hit, Kyle Chandler would be Fed-Ex’ing this week’s episode to the Emmy committee for the showcase he had and the performance he gave with that opportunity. Really, has his Coach Eric ever shown so many sides of himself, been as angry and wise and abashed and funny and thick-headed and forgiving and flummoxed as he was here? I don’t believe so. For an edition of FNL whose plot arcs were really built around Gaius Charles’ Smash and Taylor Kitsch’s Tim Riggins, Chandler’s Eric really stole the show.

But let’s take Smash and Riggins first. Smash has been courted by colleges for some time now, and this was his “verbal commitment” week—we were pretty sure from the git-go that he was going to make his decision during this hour, and it was done with the show's typically dramatic complexity. Gaius Charles has played out this football courtship beautifully—you can read in the expressions on his face all the pride, confusion, and excitement Smash is feeling. The episode gave Smash’s mom, Corinna (Liz Mikel) some really nice moments, as she fought through her fears and hopes for her son, and I really enjoyed the scene between her and Connie Britton’s Tami—one mother consoling another.

As for Riggins, well, it was another great week for Taylor Kitsch, who not only lived up to the forgiving Coach’s word for him—“honorable”—but also did some great Riggins Things such as making that nice zinger to neighbor Jackie about how, now that she’d gone through him and his brother, she might want to complete the “Riggins trifecta” and put the moves on his father. Thank goodness that brat Julie (well-played, Miss Aimee Teegarden!) cleared up last week’s mess and got Tim back in the Coach’s good graces, but I worry about this new stealing-money-from-the-meth-dealer plot. Are we fated to spend FNL’s remaining weeks with another brush-with-the-law mess so soon after Landry dumped that body?

OK, back to Coach Eric Taylor.

The show did an excellent job of piling one problem after another onto his shoulders: his annoyance and eventual blow-up at annoying sister-in-law Shelley (bye, bye, Jessalyn Gilsig! Loved the way the writers worked in your love for The Office!); Eric’s doh! reaction when Julie told him the Riggins-redeeming truth about her drunken night; his eloquent apology to Tim; his delicately firm heart-to-heart and expression of disappointment with Julie (“Damn, Julie—damn”); his quiet acceptance of Tami’s annoyance with him. Eric is one of the most complex men in prime time. I just have to lodge one teeny-weeny complaint with the writers for undercutting the satisfying revenge Eric could have taken against the mad-weasel-coach of the Larabee Lions by having this guy utter the corniest line ever heard on Friday Night Lights—that his cancer-stricken wife has three months to live “and I don’t have a game-plan for that.” Bummer.

Oh, well. Still a wonderful hour.

For the record, missing in action this week: Jason Street (again!), Lyla, and Landry and Tyra (but I liked catching that glimpse of Landry’s dad in the stadium stands). Let’s hope before the pre-strike episodes peter out, they all get some more screen time.

So what did you think about the way all these subplots unfolded?

I liked this episode...didn't love it but liked it a lot. Thank you for recognizing just how complex Eric Taylor is. Instead if being the stereotypical Texas high school football coach that is a hick....he has many layers and it is so nice that they let us see all of them. The love he has for his family is not only very realistically portrayed, but it is refreshing to see on TV. I am baffled why Kyle Chandler cannot even get a nomination...for anything. And how NBC sits back and stores this show on Friday nights during this strike instead of showcasing it makes me want to vomit. I think people are getting turned off by critics and other fans pushing it down their throats. Why not give people the opportunity to judge for themselves and have on a descent night?? grrrrrr. If NBC pulls the plug on FNL...it will be a huge mistake!!!!!!!

FNL Rocks Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 07:58 AM EST

Life impeded on my television viewing over the last few weeks, so I just caught up on the two new eps of the year. Just wanted to jump on the bandwagon with the rest of you posting here: Coach really showed us what he's made of, and KC, your lack of awards is astounding to me; NBC reach new depths with the absolute idiocy surrounding your handling of this show; and Tim- you break my heart! Can't wait for tonight.

Reb Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 03:16 PM EST

These last few shows (since the Landry mess finally ended) have been amazing. Since the strike started, so many of my friends have gone ahead and bought season 1 -- and they love it. FNL is a word-of-mouth show and I really hope NBC realizes that and gives it time to grow. Best show on television. By Far.

RBlues Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

There was a lot of other stuff going on, but I remember someone congratulating Coach for the "win" on Friday, so the game must have been a forfeit. I can't see it going any other way after such extreme interference. I'm assuming that coach was also immediately fired. Anyway--GREAT SHOW!

Tony Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 02:47 AM EST

Kyle Chandler totally owned this episode. Wow. And anybody else think the Laribee coaching vacancy might be filled by the recently-fired Coach McGregor? That would set up a doozy of a playoff showdown!

re: to james Tue, Jan 15, 2008 at 08:37 PM EST

i understand there is a rule that states "A substitute or coach or any sideline person shall not interfere with play by any act which is palpably unfair. The referee, after consulting his crew, enforces any distance penalty as he consider equitable and irrespective of any other specified code penalty. The referee could award a score under these circumstances."

so ok...the show should have clarified either way

jen Tue, Jan 15, 2008 at 03:59 PM EST

I agree with cmcd and all the other bloggers giving FNL love. This is by far one of the most quality driven shows on tv. Every week they never disappoint. I still can't believe that NBC doesn't put more effort into this show.....and where is the rest of America? I find it hard to believe that people don't like this show. Every time I share the show with someone, they love it and become addicted....EVERY TIME! Neilson needs to have more people in their circle that have good taste in TV.
btw EW....if FNL is sooo good and lauded over by your tv crtics.....why not give it more love and put it on TV watch?

cmcd Tue, Jan 15, 2008 at 03:20 PM EST

How great was this episode? I absolutely do not understand why this show gets no Emmy or Golden Globe nods. NBC is throwing away the best thing it has - and Kyle Chandler clearly has what it takes to be a huge star. Every single person on the show is absolutely terrific -Connie Britton, Seracin! Riggins! Smash! etc.!!! That combined with the consistently wonderful writing makes it a standout every bit as good as Mad Men or Grey's Anatomy (last year's GG winner). Of course, I'm preaching to choir as far as fellow bloggers here go - but hopefully someone else is listening.

Katie Tue, Jan 15, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

Yes, the Larrabee coach thing was kind of lame, but I like how they handled it. We did all know how that news affected Coach Taylor, because we all know how much he loves his wife. Also, I think getting rid of the Larrabee coach may lead to a job opening for some of our other characters, like Street, which would be interesting.
I can't figure out what NBC's deal is with this show either. They kind of deserve to be last in the ratings if they can't figure out how to sell something as unique and high quality as FNL. They really should re-run all of Seasons 1 and 2 and please, for the love of Pete, get rid of that Gladiator show.

Omar Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 09:40 PM EST

TD: there was one great locker room scene in one of this season's earlier episodes where Coach Taylor said the "clear eyes" motto very quickly and casually and the team gives an enthusiastic response. its one of my favorite moments of the season.

Ceballos Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 08:40 PM EST

SO many great Coach Taylor moments. I want to mention his scene with Smash and his girlfriend in his office where he gently, but firmly convinved Smash to reconsider his decision to go to Alabama while subtly shooting darts at Smash's meddling girl...great stuff.

Also, I can't be the only one that doesn't really miss Jason Street all that much. No offense, but that sort of rode its course.

Ellipsian Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 07:04 PM EST

Here's to ya, "FNL".

DanOregon Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

Still the best show on television. It's too good for NBC.

neillfilm Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 05:08 PM EST

EW you say you love this show, but will you put it on the cover? Show the fans some love. I even have the title for you. "The Best Show You Haven't Watched Yet". Show us you love the show like we do.

TD Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

I'm just wondering, does anyone know if anyone this season (second season) has uttered the phrase "Clear Eyes, Full Heart, Can't Lose"? I miss it.

to James Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

James, actually they do award touchdowns for interference (see the 1954 Cotton Bowl when an 'Bama player tackled the Rice Running Back).

shonna Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 03:53 PM EST

loved this episode - yelled at my tv when tim and his bro took the money. ugh. tim is always taking 2 steps forward, 2 steps back. loved the scene where tami asks eric if he kicked her sister out - every time they have a "fight" i think - i wish could learn to "fight" or rather communicate that way.

MikeknaJ Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 03:43 PM EST

Superb episode. Enough said.

FNL LOVER Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

Every time I think about the scene with Julie and Coach... the Damn, Julie, Damn, scene, I want to cry--it was so amazing. It reminds me of the sex talk that Tami gave Julie last season. That makes me cry as well.

BRILLIANT ACTING!

R.O.B. Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

Beachmom, I completely agree. It is so frustrating to hear about all the crap that people make popular while quality - even if it is very entertaining - gets rejected time after time. Arrested Development. Firefly. Now the ever-present threat of FNL going away. Yet if the powers that be had any balls - or at least honor - they would be lobbying for an award show shutout, nevermind just best actor and actress. Instead we get Dance War, yet another Survivor, another Big Brother, restaurant reality, endless singing competitions... they wouldn't be making this stuff if the moronic masses weren't buying it. And it wouldn't even be so bad if they lived peacefully alongside quality TV, but instead they are replacing it. You idiots out there are going to get everything you deserve. I say HBO or Showtime should pick up every one of these quality shows, and I bet millions of people would pay to see them.

Ep Sato Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

Agreed that Coach Taylor was the clutch that kept this episode together. He was able to touch base with all his people and we got to see his own character grow in a very real guy kind of a way. Great episode, even though I agree with Tucker that giving Coach Jerkoff the "my wife has cancer so it's okay that I've been a jerk" storyline seemed like a cheap cop out.

That said, the Smash Williams storyline I felt was really well written, in particular the scenes with Smash's mom. This show needs to be seen by a few more million people. Folks who don't watch this amazing show are missing out on something really special.

Sonya Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

Please oh please featured FNL in its very own TV Watch.

newshound23 Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

LOVE this show. Realized how wonderful Eric and Tami are together (and apart in their own scenes). Laughed out loud when Coach was absorbed in his football game TV notes and "The Office" came on...and Shelley said "I love this show. It's so funny. I don't know if you'd like it as much, though, it's very 'talky'". OH geez, loved it!!! Hands down, the Chandler and Britton deserve Emmys more than any other actors on tv (Lost? Entourage? C'mon, give the awards to people who deserve them. Ok, Hugh Laurie too.).

LadyTiger Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 11:31 AM EST

I'm hoping that we never see the meth dealer again, but it's just the kind of thing a show would do.
I think Riggins sees Julie as a little sister, not a girlfriend.
I loved how everyone grew up a little this week -- Smash with his mom, Julie telling her dad the truth, Tami's sister moving out, coach being a father figure for Smash and Riggins.
Love FNL!

Tyler D Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 10:58 AM EST

Other than the introduction of another sure-to-be melodramtic plot involving the stolen drug money, I thought this episode was great. I must admit I'm going to miss having Jessalyn Gilsig and Brooke Langton around. I'm not really seeing how Shelley was an annoying character. She just seemed to annoy the Taylors, which actually lead to some great scenes for Tami, but she never really annoyed me as a viewer. One thing that did kind of annoy me was how clueless Smash's mom was about the recruiting process.

Babs Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

"Oh, Tim," I said out loud to my TV. I rarely do that. I do hope this doesn't turn into another killer-Landry-style plotline, but I do appreciate that the writers remind us that Tim may at times be noble and soft-hearted but he's also still a dumb kid who can't remember how scared shitless he was last time he saw Meth Ferret. And like everyone else, I had chills - CHILLS - at the brilliant but succinct expression of Eric's profound disappointment in Julie. Ya know, I start to think maybe no one at NBC has ever seen this show. How else to explain its complete disregard?

beachmom Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 09:45 AM EST

FNL is like a neglected child. i can't imagine how frustrating it must be for cast and crew to put out an amazing show week and after week and then just be ignored...is america really that dumbed-down by reality shows? there are so many emmy-caliber performances on FNL..when i get in fights with my 17 year old daughter - i actually think - how would tami handle this??? and why isn't riggins on the cover of SOMETHING? he is quite possibly the most beautiful man in the history of the world. and he isn't just eye candy..his acting is stellar...i gave out a lot of season one dvd's as holiday gifts this year..i hope i recruited more fans...and i hope the next few eps incorporate more story lines like season one did..there was always SO much going on in every ep of season one. NBC wake up and pay some attention to FNL!!!!

Rosie Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 11:24 PM EST

I have never, ever, EVER in all my years of TV watching, loved a character like Eric Taylor... because he's not a character. He's a man, just like a man I'd know from down the street. Kyle Chandler inhabits him to such an amazing degree that I shiver... If this show gets canned without him getting an Emmy, I will want to cry. It's the role of a lifetime. I'd rather watch his performance than that of any Oscar winning movie role... because like I said, being from a small town, it's the most real thing I've ever seen. It's beautiful. I can't believe anyone's ever been that natural before.

Leigh Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 11:06 PM EST

I just have to complain about NBC's TOTAL lack of promotion for this wonderful show. I have been looking for previews for new shows since New Year's Day. I just happened to catch a brief mention of a possible new episode on 1/11. When I opened my DVR to watch it, I happened to see an episode taped on 1/4 that I had no idea about. It is atrocious that NBC does not promote this glorious show more.

Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

The show wasn't quite as good as the previous week, but not bad. Stealing from a meth dealer is just the next bad, "after school special" plot twist that the writers will have to dig their way out of. Still, some very nice scenes with the coach apologizing to Riggins, and Smash and his mother. That Larrabee coach needs more of a comeuppance--I figured he had some sort of mitigating factor that would explain all his bad behavior, but it doesn't really. Pretty sure that his interference in the game would cause his team to forfeit--notice, he said he wouldn't be coaching again any time soon. Love the show and I'm surprised, too, that NBC won't do more to promote it. This could be big if given the right push.

C_mont Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:11 PM EST

That was a really great episode. I mean, this post would be wayyyy too long if I mentioned specifics, but... Damn. I tell everyone I know that this is the best show on TV. I'm trying to convert them one at a time... ha.
I really don't understand what NBC has against this show. It's fawned over incessantly (have you ever heard anyone say they hate this show??? I've even heard people say they hate The Office, but NEVER FNL!) It's apparently very cheap to produce. But not only did they relegate it to the Friday graveyard at the beginning of this season (with a weak explanation), now they have nothing new on and they're KEEPING IT THERE. There are no words, NBC. I love a lot of their shows, but DAMN. There's nothing on anymore and you don't give it a better timeslot? Hell, you could put reruns of 1st and 2nd season eps on other nights and get people hooked and, I dunno, get you're ratings up.

Networks are beyond me.

JB Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

It's sad the lack of respect that FNL gets. It is easily one the best shows on tv.

Karoline Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

Still the best show on TV. I totally agree that Kyle Chandler deserves at least an Emmy nom, and I'd like to add that one of the things that makes him such a great actor is when he's not saying a word. He can say more with one look, with one gesture, than most actors can with a page of dialogue. This was another strong episode overall. It continues to be all about family; even the soapy blip involving the opposing coach's wife was OK since we all know how that news affected Coach Taylor. This show is absolutely the top reason the writers' strike has to end soon.

Sabrina Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

I seriously believe that NBC hates this show. I watch a few shows on NBC throughout the week and I don't think I have ever seen a preview for Friday Night Lights on any night other than early Friday. Whereas, every other show gets promoted at least 50 times a night every night. It's just not fair. FNL is in my opinion the best drama this network has on the air. And one of the top 5 on TV, period. Too bad the suits at NBC don't agree.

Emily Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

I hope they let the Riggins brothers get away with taking that money. Perhaps Tim will just get called in to testify that Guy is a meth dealer and that will be the end of it. The great thing about FNL is that they take plot developments in unexpected directions sometimes. There are so many great characters that they don't have to always take the obvious paths on plot.
I agree that NBC should just re-run every FNL episode during the strike. I think people would really love this show if they could figure out when it's on. It's the only drama out there that's not some sort of crime or medical thing, and it fills a really unique niche. I love it.

james Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 12:47 PM EST

omar...refs dont give away "free" tds, regardless of where they might "think" a player would end up...

dlea Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

I love this show, the depth of the characters, the cast is amazing. I hope that NBC starts promoting it more. It's a show that needs to stay on the air.

Rblues Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 03:39 AM EST

I LOVE THIS SHOW! There is nothing more to say. except Kyle Chandler. Connie Britton and Taylor Kitsch not only deserve, but are OWED Emmys. NBC WAKE UP! AND promote this show!

Rblues Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 03:39 AM EST

TDag Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 02:07 AM EST

My apologies to everyone else on the blog, but I just hate when people do stupid krap like that, especially when she insults the very thing that everyone is on here for and loves. This isn't the place.

On a brighter note, great show, and a great episode! If the show can last another 2, maybe 3 years, I think that down the road at some point Riggins and Julie will become an item. You can kind of see a bit of romantic tension there between them, and she will be the girl that makes riggins a 1 woman guy and not Lyla because of the respect Tim has for Coach(especially after he's been so fatherly to Riggins).
I'm not sure why Street has been gone for so long either. I like what they've been doing with his character. NBC...Do NOT screw this up!!! I hope the day DOES NOT come that this show is cancelled!

TDag Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 01:46 AM EST

Hey Lola...Are you serious!? If you hate football that much you would have never even tried to watch the show in the 1st place, not even once. Go try to promote your dumba** blog someplace else. Your opinion on clothes!!! Please...Who are you again and why should we give a krap what you think about fashion? You're probably like 400 lbs, horendous acne, worse teeth than the Brittish and sport a she-mullett. Go help the homeless or something and quit putting so much emphasis on what people wear...People who you would never be able to meet at that...IDIOT!!!

El Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 11:50 PM EST

"Damn, Julie... damn." goes right next to "Don't you whisper-yell at me!" in the top ten list of brilliant lines from a show crowded with them. The subtle details are never forgotten either. Shelley borrows Tami's blouse, telling sis she can't pull it off. During their little exit interview... Tami is wearing the blouse, and looking lovely. I do worry about Tim's prints on that gun, though. Don't meth dealers sometimes kill people with their guns?

Mel Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 11:12 PM EST

This is my first post, and I do it solely to support FNL. I am not a mom, a football fan or even a texas lover, but I love, love, love this show. Because it makes me laugh and cry and think all at the same time, I think it's one of the best shows on TV. I will forever ban NBC if they cancel it (TNT, are you listening? If NBC caves, pick this show up and add it to your growing line up of smart television)!! Agreed, these actors deserve recognition and awards on a weekly basis, as do the writers (despite some rocky eps). Quality TV, peeps. Get on board now while you can.

Vlada Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 10:29 PM EST

Kyle Chandler was fantastic, as always. I'm also a firm believer that Connie Britton shouldn't even have to be nominated for an Emmy. They should just hand deliver it to her house every week.

For those that were curious if that was Matt kissing Lyla... It's not and that's all I'll say for those who wish to remain spoiler-free.

I really miss Jason Street though.

tamuchi Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 10:22 PM EST

Oh, hell, yeah! KC deserved an Emmy for last season. He's just so great in this role (even with the shorn locks - hair can't emote as well as it use to).
"Riggins trifecta" is all kinds of awesome. Who wouldn't want to complete that? Yummy Brett Cullen. But it's another frying pan Timmy's gotten himself into. I hate that stealing from the meth dealer will most probably come back to bite Tim in the posterior. I can always hope that maybe, just maybe, the writers will leave well enough alone. Timmy deserves a break, even if Coach apologized to him.

Joe C Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 08:45 PM EST

Oops! I meant Kyle Chandler! Joe C apologizes; took a page from Smash's book and referred to myself in the third person there!

Joe C Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 08:43 PM EST

I have been a critic of this season, but I have to say, this was the best episode of the season. Well done all around. I agree, Eric Chandler did a great job, but so did everyone. Including the writers. Very good episode.

Lola Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

Much as I try to like this show, I can't, for the simple reason that I. Hate. Football.

Great episode but when the hell is Jason Street going to be back on?

Omar Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

i disagree james...riggins was clearly on his way to the end zone for an easy score. giving dillon the TD there is the right thing to do, otherwise its totally unfair to them.

james Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

Micheal - to answer you Q about the ending of the game...i love FNL, but this type of "un"reality annoys me in sports tv/movies...the coach would have been penalized for his onfield incursion(probably a 15yd penalty) and since a game cannot end on a penalty, there would have been 1 untimed down for Dillon, on which they could have scored to win

Jenny Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 03:03 PM EST

Another stunning episode. So glad that Julie came clean with her dad about Riggins. The scene at the end with Smash and his mom was so touching. I rewound the preview for next week and just like Mrs. Taylor who posted earlier, I thought it looked like Matt Saracen that Lila was kissing. Probably just someone with similar hair color. Can't imagine that Matt and his grandma's nurse will be broken up next week. But maybe?!

Jelana Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

Loved the episode, add me on to the "damn, Julie - damn" bandwagon. I was going nuts when Riggins took the money. I kept yelling at the TV -- "leave your stuff behind so crazy meth dealer doesn't know it's you!" It's so sad no one ever hears me when I yell at the TV. >

Kevin Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

What does this mean?

bobo5ank Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 11:01 AM EST

He is handsome. He posted her personal ad on a celebrities dating site called "M arry Millionaire. com". I just visited his profile page. Seems he is quite popular there.

To Michael Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 12:35 PM EST

I think the "game is over" meant it was a forfeit, Dillon wins.

Crystal Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 12:28 PM EST

Just adding another:
"Damn Kyle Chandler....Damn"

I miss Jason! Very happy to see Billy and Tim together.

Michael Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

Yes, yes, I know FNL isn't primarily about football, but how about some clarification of who won the game. When the Larabee coach tackled Riggins the refs said something to the effect that "this game is over". But if the game is over at that point, before Riggins actually scored, then Larabee won because they were still leading by five points. Anybody have an answer, or am I the only one who cares?

monica Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 12:00 PM EST

Just when I started liking Riggins again, he HAD to rob a crazy meth-head. But I sense that once again Coach is going to save him, since he was introduced to that crazy meth-head. During the part where the Larabee coach tackled Riggins, I was in utter shock at how psychotic he was behaving. And I kept yelling at the screen for him to just to spit it out: "WHY ARE YOU SUCH A JERK?" And because he took so long to answer, I had no pity when he responded with his lame "my wife is dying" excuse. However, I suppose that cleans up that feud. I also wanted to punch Julie who went to go get permission from Riggins not to tell her dad--it just shows how immature she really is. Good thing she's got a conscience, otherwise he'd still be screwed. Next week, I think I saw him trying to date Lila. I think this attempt alone--since she's so out of his league, morality-wise--would merit an Emmy. I seem to love playboy characters who suddenly put aside their egos for the girl of their dreams.

I LOVE this show. Best show on TV. At least once in every episode, without fail I get a lump in my throat watching this incredibly written and acted show. Last night's came when Coach Talyor was talking to his daughter and said "Damn, Julie. Damn" During this writers strike NBC needs to rerun the first season instead of all this reality garbage they are putting on the air. If they want cheap programming there's nothing cheaper then a show that's already been completed

I'm not afraid to admit both myself and my husband got a little teary eyed when Smash brought his mother flowers and she said how proud she was of him. Whenever I read about the shows low ratings, all I think of is Jay Leno's Jaywalking and how dumb most people in America are.

i think tim's brother will end up paying the price for their sins. tim and his bro are both dysfunctional apart, but somehow make things work together. i thought it was a nice touch that tami was wearing the red sexy shirt in the final scene when her sister previously declared that she couldn't. the scene between tami and smash's mom was excellent. both of those ladies are top notch. was that rick barnes (the texas basketball coach) pretending to be a football coach for TMU?

PLEASE move the recap to the main page/recaps section and don't bury it under PopWatch anymore!! I think many people would start watching if they could see quickly and easily how much there is to love about it (and after seeing EW's love for it). Once again, Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton are phenomenal. Let's dish on next week's previews---who was Matt Saracen kissing...Lyla?!?!

Billy's back! Yay! Now if Jason would come back, that would be a great day. Coach T was amazing this episode (and every episode). For me, this episode highlights why this show is absolutely amazing. I only wish the rest of the TV world was watching...

“Damn, Julie—damn”. This short monster of a line sums up the reason I look forward to Friday. Great recap.

I love this show too, but never would have watched it if EW had not convinced me it was worth checking out. I devoted 2 weeks this summer to Season 1 on NBC.com and have now added it to my TIVO Season Pass. So why not try this...Move the summary/critique from Pop Watch where reading that this is a great show is a shot in the dark to TV Watch where perhaps some other lost soul may get convinced to check it out.

Forgive me FNL Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 09:09 AM EST

I have been a backslider. I have doubted. I have strayed. But I now realize why you are the best show on television. Real, complex, smart characters. Storylines that are believable and compelling. And an ensemble cast that is pitch perfect. Forgive me FNL - I promise never to forsake Eric, Tim, Smash, Tami, Julie and the Panthers ever again.

...Good morning...how I love FNL; I'm so glad that Tim's brother is in the picture again, I think their relationsip is so sweet and heartbreaking...and does anyone know if Meth Man will be hurting them? I'd hate for that to happen...
