'Falling Slowly' is still eligible for a Best Song Oscar. Whew!

Glen_l Good news for those folks (including me) rooting for "Falling Slowly" from Once to win the Best Song Oscar: in the dispute over the song's eligibility, the Academy has ruled in its favor. There was some confusion over whether the song was actually conceived for the film, since stars Glen Hansard (pictured) and Markéta Irglová both released versions of it on disc before the movie came out. Nonetheless the Academy has determined that the song was indeed composed for the movie, which was in the works before the recordings were released. Bottom line: the song won't be disqualified, like so much other good movie music that didn't make the cut this year.

Since none of my mainstream friends has seen this movie, I haven't been able to share that feeling of the first time I heard Falling Slowly. It's great to read that so many others felt that same way when they first heard this absolutely beautiful and perfect song.

I also cried when I heard the song during the movie, and I still get a little teary-eyed every time I hear it. I got really emotionally invested in every song, but that one especially.

Look here, I love Enchanted, especially "So Close" (a perefct musical song), but if "Falling Slowly" doesn't win this award there is no justice. Every time it comes on the ipod I kindof freeze as I remember hearing it for the first time. Sorry Disney - Glen and Marketa are more magical than you!

Grand! Cheers! And all those other Irish sayings! "Falling Slowly" is pure poetry, and that scene in the movie when the song first occurs, the look on Glen's face as Marketa really gets his song and plays and sings along--- best depiction of a blossoming connection between two people a film to date, in my humble opinion. Shivers, chills, unbelievable. My only sadness is that "Once" wasn't recognized in a larger way than just this one nomination. Oscar, make it up to me by having Glen and Marketa singing the most beautiful song in the world LIVE!

That's great news. I saw the movie over six months ago and it's still in my head. "Falling Slowly" is the heart and soul of the movie. Truly memorable. I hope they win.

Kat (and Nose): I know what YOU mean..."Falling Slowly" gave me the teary eyes, the chills, AND the goosebumps. I don't think I'll ever forget how I felt the first time I heard that amazing song performed by those two talented actors/musicians. If it doesn't win the Oscar, there is no justice in the world! I'm still a little miffed that "Once" wasn't nominated further...it's in my top three films of 2007.

To Nose - I know what you mean - I had the same experience watching "Falling Slowly" during the movie - and I even got teared up, it was such a powerful scene. I hope hope hope they win and hope even more that they get to perform on the show!

That's terrific news. I watched this movie last weekend and was blown away by that song. It's absolutely beautiful. It better win over those Enchanted songs!

Nose Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

I would actually love to see "Say It To Me Now" performed on the Oscar stage. When he sang that in the movie, I actually dropped what was in my hands and I was completely lost in the song. I know that sounds lame, but it's true.

Hurrah! This song better win now! A little recognition for the little movie that could!

yay!!!

Excellent news. I with Nose on this one, the Oscar ceremony better go ahead so we can see Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova perform. Then everyone who hasn't seen Once or heard the songs can fall in love with them just like we did. Oh,I'd love them to win as well, of course!

the whole album was amazing. i did love enchanted and thought the songs were really great. it was great to hear music like that in movies again. fun, catchy, entertaining. but the songs from once were incredible. i'm torn as to what would get my vote. falling slowly is great and one of my favorites, but it's not the very top. maybe that's why i'm confused a bit. regardless, i think i'd still give the edge to once when it comes to my vote. the movie was so simply wonderful it deserves to be noticed.

Katy Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

Phew! I can't believe just this one song was nominated. They're all incredible.

Clementine Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

The whole album is so good, but this song is haunting... I absolutely love it and now I have something to look forward to at the Oscars! I hope it wins!

Nose Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

Every song in Once gave me goosebumps. I don't even much care if they win, as long as the Oscars are broadcast and Glen and Marketa get to perform this live.

Carli Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

They better win now! I loved this movie. The music was amazing. I haven't heard the other songs though, so I can't compare.

Martha Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

Whew - that's a relief. Think they can use similar reasoning to somehow reinstate Jonny Greenwood's score for "There Will Be Blood"? Or is that just too much to hope for?

Heather Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

This song better win. Enchanted was an adorable movie but Falling Slowly is such a rich and beautiful song. It's a shame this movie wasn't recognized beyond this one nomination.

Gringo Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 11:50 AM EST

thank god

Catherine Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

Hope they win!! This is one of the best album of the year and that song is simply beautiful!!
