'Circus of the Stars' is back. And multiplying!

According to Variety, ABC is negotiating to resurrect Circus of the Stars, NBC is planning on bringing the foreign hit Celebrity Circus to the U.S. this summer, and CBS and Fox are showing interest in Big Top-themed pitches, too. It's a great day to be a D-lister. And to update your will.

How do you feel about Circus of the Stars' proposed return? Before you "reality" cynics go off, watch Bronson Pinchot swing on the trapeze, Lynda Carter dodge knives, and The Great American Hero's William Katt master the Wheel of Death (below). Katt really is my hero now.

Uh, lonewolfette!!! "Greg" Brady didn't perform, it was "Peter" Brady... I still give "Peter" an "E" for effort to try that even with cables, even at his (our) age!!!

I loved "Circus Of The Stars" as well. Matter of fact, I'm the one who posted the William Katt video! :D

you have got to be kidding me. There was more cables than at a Van Halen concert holding them up. "greg brady" couldn't hold up his own wife up on his shoulders for I bet 10 feet much less on a high wire. It is realy pathetic how bad the american public looks by the rest of the world. It really sads me about what pushes our morals.

I think the new Celebrity Circus on NBC will be pretty good actually. I've seen the promos and it looks alright.

I'm guessing that the people who are snarking on this one are fairly young. Those of us who grew up in the 70's and 80's remember this stuff a little more fondly, I think. I'd love to see this show! There is a whole generation of people out there who have never been to a circus, so they don't really get it. The lights! The sequins! The elephant poop! The trick dogs! Don't act like you wouldn't want to see Bernie Mac whoop it up with some Bengal tigers!

Good lord, I didn't watch this the FIRST time it was on the air, and I won't be watching it this time either...I used to watch Battle of the Network Stars, tho, watching Howard Cosell and Don Meredith row boats across a pool - good times...

I hate (HATE) reality shows in general, but I have to admit, I'll watch this one out of absurd curiosity. Who doesn't want to see Steve Carell and Rain Wilson do a Trapeze act??

I'm okay with it but I really, REALLY miss my scripted shows. Really.

Circus of the Stars and Battle of the Network Stars were awesome - I remember watching those all the time when I was little! Sure, I'm going to be missing the scripted stuff, but if a writer's strike is what it took to bring back some quality reality shows to TV...

tia Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 05:50 PM EST

ZOD- I thought of Battle of the Network Stars too. I miss both of those shows, and while I think the quality of stars today would be D-list, back then the stars were the big names of TV. I remember the cast of Family Ties were my favorite performers. BUT- I do think FOUR shows is a little overkill. (Kinda like two karaoke shows was a bit much.)

Zod Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

Woohoo! This is awesome!
I hope, I really, really hope this means a new "Battle Of The Network Stars" isn't far behind.
It's seems like such a long time ago(actually it was a long time ago) watching Todd Bridges kicking Cheryl Tiegs ass in the relay race. Or seeing Scott Baio complete the obstacle course in record time.

It seems Popwatch is the writers' strike latest victim. To see folks like Ms. Bierly, Ms. Barrett and My main man Mike Slezak get stuck reporting on crap reality shows without words like "guilty pleasure" or "watched it so you won't have to" is a sure sign of how bad things have already started to become.

The concept of 4 distinct D-list celeb circus shows would barely have caused a blip at EW before (except to make fun of the networks for lacking in creativity). Now it's a popwatch item.

Anyone else feel their soul die a little today too?

Snarf Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

Shouldn't this also be categorized under "things that make me die inside" or "i watch so you don't have to?"

Gretchen Weiners Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

Oh that's awesome! I didn't even realize that I remembered this until I watched the video.

Andy Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 04:36 PM EST

The UK version even gets reality stars to be part of their Cirque de Celebrity so guess they better call Trista, Omarosa, and Romber

Sally in Chicago Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

I loved Circus of the Stars.

Meg Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 04:19 PM EST

This is the best news I have heard all week! I used to want to be an actress just so I could be on Circus of the Stars. I'm sure it will be cheesy and totally suck, but I can't wait to see Mario Lopez walk the tight rope. It's the little things in life that make me happy.
