Sundance BuzzCheck™: 'Anvil! The Story of Anvil'

Anvil_l To say the audience was electric after the conclusion of Sunday's noon screening of Anvil! The Story of Anvil is an understatement. Sacha Gervasi's documentary about the world's hardest-working, most under-appreciated metal band certainly struck a chord with its Sundance audiences and should get purchased by a distributor before the conclusion of the festival. The band has been around for 30 years and these 50-something rockers are still trying to make it big. It could be that they finally have. —Nicole Sperling

I've been an ANVIL fan since Hard 'N' Heavy, and going to see them play Roxanne's way back when. I've also been fortunate enough to have seen them play many times in Toronto and Ottawa over the last few years. A night at an ANVIL show is always amazing. They're a great bunch of guys, and they blast out some killer metal. I hope that this film brings them some major, long-overdue recognition - they certainly deserve it. I can't wait to see the movie.

I caught the Friday premiere @ the Library Theater @ Sundance. This doc had it all: pathos, access, backstory, and the cycle of success-failure-success. While it seemingly bordered on mockumentary (with nice nods to Spinal Tap), the reality of it made the experience all the more special. I'm not a Metal-head, but I was inspired to buy their latest album on-site, and ordered "Metal on Metal" on-line. The band's humanity shone-through, and the movie was truly a gem amongst the hit-and-miss of Sundance.

Anvil could have been huge, but everything they did after Forged in Fire really sucks

I was at Sunday's noon screening of Anvil! The Story of Anvil at Sundance, and yes, the doc received a standing ovation. It was by far the best doc I saw while there.

Hey, I was at the world premier on Friday in Park City. This movie is a must for rock fans, but works for everyone as a funny, poignant, and very human examination of friendship, commitment and perserverence in the face of adversity. You leave the theater loving Anvil.

I've seen Anvil 9 times over the past few years.. and hopefully going to see them this Saturday in Toronto. They usually play small clubs around.. but they put on a huge show with just their instruments and their presence. Lips instantly captivates everyone in the crowd, and sucks them in.. and Robb's one of the world's best drummers. Best live band going. Super cool and very appreciative guys as well! I hope big things come for them with this movie, they certainly deserve it.

I first saw Anvil live when I was 17 years old in 1980 and they never changed. For me there's only one great Canadian band and it's Anvil. You go to see their show and you know it's going to kick ass. They deserve that movie more than any other metal bands cos they never give up.
