Whatever happened to Melinda Doolittle?

Melinda_l In light of the news that Jordin Sparks recently scored the lowest total first-week sales (119,000) and the lowest first-week chart position (No. 10) among six American Idol champs to date…and seeing as Blake Lewis's Audio Day Dream got socked with a tepid C review from our own Chris Willman in this week's EW…and keeping in mind season 5's "unhip" Elliott Yamin is still getting airplay even after more "marketable" Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee have hit the bargain bin…I figured I'd ask the good folks at 19 Entertainment whether or not they'd gotten around to signing season 6's third-place finisher Melinda Doolittle to a recording contract.

Yes, I know, she doesn't have Jordin's youthful appeal, or Blake's hipster musical tastes, but the woman possesses a monster truck of a voice, and the world needs more monster trucks! And personally, I'd like to see her drive it right through the rocky chart terrain left barren in the absence of Tina Turner, followed by the smooth-jazzy territory once occupied by Anita Baker.

Alas--and I know you know this is coming--a 19 spokesperson's response, received via email yesterday afternoon, contained a single, sad sentence: "She is not signed to 19 Recordings."

Help me make sense of this, PopWatchers! Because it's not right, and it's not okay. And don't even get me started on LaKisha Jones.

Oh yes, you know I went there.

This past week Melinda finally finished the vocals on her CD! All of that happens quickly then we can expect to see her CD on shelves this Fall! Also, keep your eye out for her first official single that should be hitting airwaves in the coming weeks. Melinda is going to be throwing a lot of music at us in the coming months so get ready!

Honestly, Melinda Doolittle is one of the greatest voice in "American Idol history". She is the real deal as the 3 judges of Idol mainly: Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul & Randy Jackson and Idol host Ryan Seacrest and millions of spectators can attest to that as they were mesmerized by her versatility and performance. Music has always been a part of our daily lives and if we don't allow "Melinda" to spread her wings then it seems that we are torturing our very own in a dull rusty cage. so typical of the music industry to ignore a wonderful super talent like melinda. I found her to be a modern day Gladys Knight.Aside for some 12 year olds text messaging their lastest heart throb, they should see by some of the people america picks, Rueben Stoddard ,Clay Aiken, Elliot Yamin, Kimberly Locke, Jennifer Hudson etc.. That america doesn't care as much about looks as they do talent. yet they still try to make us feel we are supposed to want the so called "commercial package" We need people who can raise the bar and make people feel something when they sing. It's fantastic to hear Ms. Doolittle doing her thing the way she wants to. She has been in the business and knows you can rise to fast.

It's a great marketing ploy that they did not put out a CD right away. She has a huge fan base. It's smart not to be overexposed. And I don't understand the comparisons with Anita Baker...they are nothing alike.

The music industry is fickle--good for your for not rushing for fame. Also, thanks for the info.

I so agree with the majority of commentors. Melinda should have won Idol last year, hands down. She is an amazing performer and can sing anything, and sing it better than the original performer in most cases. In the end, Idol is as, Simon suggested, a Populartity contest and not a Talent contest. Melinda deserves a recoring contract, and I really hope to hear and see more of her soon.

Melinda is a consumate professional with a charming and delightful personality, stage presence par excellence AND a tremendous God-given talent and voice. Her only downfall in the Idol competition was that she was already head and shoulders above the other "kids" and didn't show as much improvement as they over the weeks of the show.

re: those saying Jordin Sparks is better. Sorry folks. Have you all noticed where her recording placed? Jordin is fine..if the same old same old kind of thing you all have been trying to sell those of us that have actual musical training have started refusing to buy, is what you like.

She isn't very much different. She won becuase teenyboppers text more. Pure and simple. Kids don't think, don't make judgements as to best. They just see another youngster and vote. (a good example of that is Sanjia or however you spell his name, and how he stayed on week after endlessly boring, trifling week. The little girls with cells phones keep it going)

Melinda Doolittle-- the greatest "American Idol" that has ever appeared..Anything that was thrown at her she nailed it effortlessly. I was so sorry she was not chosen over "Blake" for the finals..."because she was not the American Beauty. I would very much love to see more of her whether it's on an award show or any musical concert or her record album. She left an everlasting impression because of her magical, melodious voice she was blessed with.

I can't wait until Melinda has an album released. I keep watching and waiting. Especially with the looks of this years prospects to be the AI. I just can't get into idol this year. I think it has to do with the total disappointment with last seasons results. I have not even voted once this season, or plan on it at this time. AI seems to have become just a teeny bopper popularity contest and not about true talent.

I've been waiting for Melinda's first album. I bought Katherine McPhees, Taylor Hicks' - who I loved on AI and Daughtry's. Let me tell you that after the first listen, I haven't touched either Katherine's or Taylor's again. I thought the songs on the CD's sucked and showed nowhere near the sound that they had during AI. Daughtry was awesome - as has been Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkeson. I even liked Clay Aiken's first album. However, I was blown away by Melinda Doolittle last season. I couldn't believe that Jordin and the Bee/Bop guy made it through to the finale. I, like you, anxiously await her first album.

I can't wait to hear Melindas first album, counting the days... but where Melinda really shines is LIVE on stage. When u compare Melindas studio versions to the live versions, the live versions always stand out by far - they carry this magical extra, keeping u hooked to the magical carpet ride of her performance, taking u higher and deeper than u expected. I'm not sure if any overproduced and polished studio recording will do the same. Fingers crossed for her upcoming CD to capture the magic.

I just purchased the MP3 for "My Funny Valentine" and am pleased to read in the comments that an album is tentatively coming ... but where is Melinda's promotion? Why isn't her management doing a better job at that? I stumbled onto the MP3 by accident, and it was released almost 2 months ago. Melinda is too good to have to rely on "grass roots" word-of-mouth promotion. How can we say this any clearer, record industry? WHERE IS OUR MELINDA DOOLITTLE ALBUM? You keep pushing trite crap at us that you *think* we want instead of listening to what we *actually* want. It is time for the truly talented people like Melinda to get a better break.

Do other Idol contestants have a bulletin board like this where all the comments are so glowing. I suppose they do. But anyone listening to Melinda sing and knows Britney Spears well choreographed dance routines was never music, knows Melinda is something special. She has the raw talent of an Aretha or Whitney. Unfortunately talent alone doesn't sell. Anyone watching season six and still thinks Idol is a singing competition.... Well, I'm sure they are Hannah fans too.

I don't think it was a lack of confidence that Melinda showed but an overabundance of humility. Even if she is not signed to do an R&B or pop album she should be signed to do a Christian album. Oh well, too many winners who weren't talented have stolen the spotlight from those who truly should have won...

What a shame she doesn't have a contract, but I'm not surprised. All of her amazing performances on AI were always followed by a choking lack of confidence that was painful to watch. Unfortunately, that's the reputation she carries with her. She was obviously the best singer in the competition that year, but anyone who still believes that AI is a "singing competition" must live on another planet.

The only one that kept me interested in idol that season was Melinda. I thought for sure she would have an album out by now. Get something out there for us middleagers. Bring back some class in the music industry. Rap music is mostly violent or just plain boring..same tempo over and over again. Make a change already.

The reason Melinda got 3rd place was because lots of teenyboppers voted for Jordon and Blake...However while they can afford texts they dont automatically go out and buy albums which 25+ people will do because Melinda is clearly a superior singer and the Buying public will buy once there is an album to aquire...And if i recall correctly it was primarily a singing contest...Clearly the difference between the voting puplic vs the buying public will become apparent to some music studio out there with sufficent brainpower so i look forward to the 1st album

What I find interesting is that no one seems to link Melinda's elimination with the low ratings for the final show last season. I didn't watch, and many people I know didn't watch, because the awesome talent, Melinda, was eliminated. We didn't care about the other two.

Melinda was my fav ,she was humble and had talent. I was disapointed that she did not win at first because she was the best I thought. But now I am glad she did not because I think when she does make it and get her record contract she will have a smokin' career with longevity and not fizzle out. I am really not sure where the exec's heads are at AI....they should be able to detect by now, there system is not working too well. I would fire 19. Let me see.........they have to produce and album for the winner, so they give the poor person the worst of material. What are they supposed to do with that?

Such as Fantasia.....she won with the beauty of the soulful voice she had. They then produce a soft rap CD that was the worst for her. They did the same thing to Ruben.

Melinda is a pro with a gift of a voice!! Her voice is far stronger, her talent greater than the inexperienced and tacky Jordin Sparks whose 'pitchy' voice actually made me wince and cover my ears on several occasions. Jordin will mature, but she is not 'hip' and Melinda is! Maybe she should change her last name, but I have to say that I think if she had dressed the way she did on her last show, combined with her unequalled talent, she might very well have won. But, then again, apparently American Idol fans have no sense of pitch, no training in what constitutes music, nor in any art. The adolescent following of the show has made itself clear and perhaps Melinda is better off NOT the winner...no guilt by association...

I just listened to Melinda's new version of "My Funny Valentine". The first half is great, simple and Melinda at her best singing a standard. The second half of the song is terrible-overproduced, bad background vocals, and the whole thing sounds cheesy. I hope when she records her first CD, it will be just Melinda being Melinda and singing great songs. I'd LOVE to hear her sing a simple, elegant version of Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".

I'm a 58 year old lover of music. And it's been a long time since I've heard a voice with the staying and star power of Melinda Doolittle. This is a women that will go down in musical history with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Pearl Baily, I could go on and on. She tells a story with every lyric. Of course she should have won ( same as Cris Daughtry ) but the same sickos who voted for Taylor Hicks previously are obviously still around. Doolittle was by far the strongest voice in AI in 2007. The show unfortunately doesn't balance or handicap it's voting properly or she would have won. Sparks is just flat out not as talented as Doolittle, but she has more q with the demographic of voters. Doolittle could be one of the greatest talents of this decade and perhaps century. The shows needs to be renamed American Popularity Contest until it's producers get a grip on doing some handicapping.

Melinda's album is to be released in a couple of months (not with 19 Entertainment). But anyway, what's the rush to make a CD? Take your time and make a good one!
She has also been actively working for "Malaria No More" and is due to sing at the Martin Luther King tribute in Minneapolis on January 21st. So that's where she is :)

OK - Here is the thing...Melinda's been busy. She went on AI tour, laid down some collaborative vocals, made appearances and hosted events, etc. She didn't even get time off after Idol until Sept. '07, folks. She then had the joy of CHOOSING WHICH LABEL SHE WANTED TO SIGN WITH! She hired a management team, whose contact info is posted on her myspace page. And, she is now working on the next step. DEMANDING INSTANT GRATIFICATION MUCH? Good things come to those who wait. Be patient. She's not wallowing in some dank dark corner somewhere. If you knew her at all, you'd know that she is amazing and in great demand. Again, be patient. The cd will be well worth the wait.

Thanks for the update on Melinda. I had been wondering. She is the only person from last season that I had planned on buying their CD and I buy 2-3 CD's a week. I may boycott Season 7 & until I hear someone has signed Melinda. It is a pure tragedy that she didn't win and remains unsigned. I will admit Jordin's Tattoo is very infectious and has grown on me like Natatsha Bedingfield's Unwritten and I may download the one song. I didn't cast one vote in Season 6 unlike the previous 5 seasons and Season 7 needs to have some talent before I decide how much time I will spend watching after they pick to top 24. She was by far the best in my opinion on Season 6 of American Idol. Quiet frankly, I find her downright sexy! Her voice rocks! She has Tina Turner written all over her. I wish someone out there would give her shot. The question needs to be asked though. Is Melinda's heart in it? Does she want that? I sinceraly hope that she does want to do something with her musical career because I would be an instant fan. I love her! She's awesome! She is a younger, sexier version of Tina Turner. Ijust finished watching the Christmas concert from Belmont college Tenn. Tears flowed when I saw Melinda.She is such a beautiful girl and her inner beauty shines through every time she opens her mouth to speak or sing. I am waiting for her first cd. Plain & simple Idol needs an Extreme Makeover! Throw out theme weeks once you get to the top 12. Let the contestants play the guitar,piano,etc if they wanna. Let them preform original stuff and covers that are there style of singing and what they like. You have plenty time to get the songs cleared. Thats the only thing I loved about Rockstar over Idol was better songs, no really themes, at least 1 week of original stuff etc. As far as Jordin vs Blake. I pick Blake overall but think Jordin is more mainstream. Reason they didnt do good is lack of promotion of their music. Not really their fault its their ppls fault. A single should be promoted a month an half b4 album drops and the album 3 weeks til the end of the week of the albums release if that makes sense. Best and most successful idols from all season to me kelly clarkson, carrie underwood and daughtry. Hopefully someone whose music style is similar to these 3 past idol contestants will win this year and hopefully a guy will win.

Jordin certainly doesn't spark, and Blake is bland. Goes to show that AI voting practices need to change. 5 or 10 votes per phone number would certainly change things at AI. Even though Daughtry has album of the year, Clay Aiken has sold more albums than any other male idol, and has sold more tickets than any other male/female idol. Kelly, Clay, Elliot and Melinda RULE! Don't imagine that everything lives or dies by the hand of AI. That Melinda had the chance to show her talent is enough. She's been busy, since she came off that silly AI tour. At a private concert for some of our country's big business leaders where she raised $50,000 for Malaria No More. With a couple of commercials, both being shown on TV in the football season. With being picked by CNN as one of those young people who "rock the world." By doing a benefit for Nashville's amateur theatre and raising money galore there for scholarships. With singing for the President at a big dinner. With going on tour and doing sold out concerts with Michael Smith. With an hour long PBS Christmas eve show, where she hosted, sang marvelously well and looked beautiful. And I understand she has great management and a CD coming out in early '08. Hold your hats. The Best Is Yet To Come!

I don't think it matters that Melinda got signed by 19. She is currently recording and I'm sure she'll go on a small label. Who cares of it's 19? You are missing the point. No one cares about music business perceptions about "marketability" or record deal entitlements for AI contestants. The fact of the matter is, we watched the show last year, saw someone we'd like to hear more from, and waited for a CD from that person. And now we hear we might not get one, and we are disappointed. Understand now? No need to educate us unrealistic peons about out collective naivete. Maybe I just thought the chick had a nice voice and I wanted to hear more of it. Slezak, during the season you were one of the 'experts' bleating on and on about how 'not marketable' Melinda is. Hate to say it, but you were part of the problem.

I'm disappointed to hear that 19 didn't sign Melinda. She is and has been such a great ambassador for the show, and as you have mentioned - has The Voice. I'm one of those highly educated, well paid 18-to-49s who would never bother with a Jordin or Blake CD, but would buy whatever Melinda put out in a second.

Don't plan to watch AI next season, precisely because of the idiocy surrounding the arguments over who is and isn't marketable ... like anyone can really claim to know.

I don't know why everybody's so sad for Mindy Doo because she doesn't have a record contract. Where does it state in AI that all contestants will get a record contract? Only the winner gets a contract. And don't cry for her and Lakisha. Lakisha stars on Broadway in January (a regular pay check), and Mindy will probably make her money with endorsements and private events. Like I stated before, she could easily step into Sharon Jones' shoes with the Dap Kings, but that spot is taken.

I, too, have been wondering about Melinda and hoping that I will hear her soon. Daughtry was wonderful in concert--a real talent. He is the reason that I will watch again this season--after they get through the cruel auditions. AI is worth watching to find the real talented ones like Chris and Eliot, but they seldom win.

I agree that the producers already know exactly what they are looking for. AI may (MAY) have started out as a relatively honest singing competition in its first season, or maybe back in England, but now it's just another pop tart machine.

djm - I am not surprised. Of the televised "rejects", they turned away a lot of good-looking, good-sounding people.

They might not want Melinda, but it's clear they want a heffer (Jordin ain't exactly eye-candy - she's ginormous!). If she's a "single mother", all the better!

My sister saw Chris Daughtery in concert a few months back and even though she is a huge fan of hi she said the concert was horrible and that he was boring. I think Jordin's sales will increase over time and I think AI is kind of becoming a joke. I have a friend whose daughter auditioned in SC - she's 19, absolutely gorgeous (a Miss Teen SC contestant) and can sing beautifully. She auditioned singing a Deborah Cox song and the producers told her it was beautiful and that she had a great voice but that she wasn't the "look" they were going for this season. I was like Huh? Trust me - they know exactly what they are looking for when they go into the season and I am sure they do whatever they feel they need to do to make it happen. I don't think Melinda Doolittle ever stood a chance on the show - I think they wanted a younger Idol that could cross over from pop to other genres and M Doolittle just isn't that fresh.

Carla, I would agree with you general statement about AI female contestants having nondescript recording voices (Carrie Underwood, Kat McPhee, Jordin Sparks) with the big exception of Kelly Clarkson. That kid has a great voice, IMO.

As far as Melinda, what can you even say about that? We all know why she didn't get signed. That is all about image. Like I can see her face when I'm listening to my radio anyway. Some smaller label needs to snap her right up, they will make crazy money off her. I want her album. Whoever said Anita Baker update is right on, not to mention a jazz standards album too. Heck, she could have done a Christmas album this year, I bet that would have sold like crazy!

Melinda really should have won the darn thing. Her sales would have been a lot better than Jordin's. Jordin's CD tanked (compared to other winners, anyway). Even back when everyone was saying she would rival Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood for top sales (Slezak, I'm looking at you!) I knew she would tank.

Don't worry, Melinda will be just fine. Simon absolutely loved her and won't let her get away. Do you remember how depressed he was after Ryan announced she got the boot?

Hope Melinda gets a chance to show the world what she can do--won't know until she gets her voice recorded--could be great, or not. This is the problem with a bleeping television show deciding who gets recording contracts. Singing great and looking good, dancing around doesn't mean the sound is special. Decent female vocalists are a dime a dozen and to date the recording voices of AI's female contestants have turned out to be nondescript. The best distinctive recording voices discovered so far belong to two men, Elliott Yamin (has a huge rich warm voice,instantly recognizable on radio and I daresay his versatility as a singer may be unmatched)followed by Chris Daughtry (also a great radio voice).

And j-Hud starting her disc over, should be a GOOD thing, considering how well received the last few Jimmy Jam & TGerry Lewis productions were. I know they're "legends" in the music biz, but they are partially repsonible for the flat tracks from the past few Janet Jackson albums that have failed to sell. Their sound is dated.
Now, FINALLY, as far as Melinda is concerned, the imagine she portrayed on Idol, was that of a gospel singer, and lets be frank, those women, have BIG voices, but not so much towards BIG sales. Melinda reminds me VERY much of say Kelly Price who made a big splash in the late 90's with R&B, but then ultimately shifted back to her true love, gospel roots, & Kelly not only hasn't had much sales success, but not much notoriety any longer either. Thats not being cruel, its just gospel releases don't get much press & promotion, so IF thats the direction melinda is headed, she had better hope & pray Slezak continues to be devoted to covering her every move!

Ok, lets try and cover all the topics here as fast as I can type! I LIKE the Blake cd, but the rabid fans wishing death on EW Reviewer Chris Willman need to consider 1 very SMALL factor. Blake promised a diverse & dynamic cd hence the name A.D.D., but seriously, as much as I enjoy his Maroon 5-ish sound, the cd as a whole, is NOT diverse & is vocodered & beatboxed straight through! Where's the heartfelt ballad? Anyone who has listened to it will completely agree with that statement. As for Jordin, her next single is the Chris Brown duet, "No Air" which should be a huge hit, with the two performing the track live at some point during the next season of Idol. J-Hud had to "restart" her cd over at some point earlier this year, & since she was filming the Sex & The City movie this summer, I'd imagine her debut single will FINALLY be out this Spring, so she can not only perform on Idol, but laucnh her cd around the time the Sex & The City movie opens Memorial Day 2008.
