What did you think of Jorja Fox's 'CSI' exit?

Nov 16, 2007, 06:41 PM | by Alynda Wheat

Categories: Television

Jorja_l Classy? Screw classy. We like ironic. Last night Jorja Fox walked away from her troubled CSI character Sara Sidle, ending her near-series run (Sidle started collecting DNA samples in the forensic drama’s second episode). It hasn’t been an easy road for Fox (click here to read her exit interview with EW’s Lynette Rice), who, along with George Eads, was briefly fired from the show over a contract dispute. Life hasn’t exactly been easy for her character, either—CSI’s season 7 cliffhanger left off with Sidle’s kidnapping, and this season picked up with her trapped under a car in the rain, nearly drowning, then stumbling in the desert until she was rescued, minutes from death by her lover/boss Grissom (William Petersen).

While last night didn't provide all that dramatic an exit—Sidle does not go down in a blaze of glory of any kind—it was a memorable one. CSI fans will remember Hannah West (Juliette Goglia), a conniving child prodigy who got her big brother off on a murder rap. As brilliant as she is devious, Hannah’s fluent in manipulation, and she takes nervous-wreck Sara on one last, emotional ride, this time framing her big brother—the only family she has left—for murder. In the end, though, both the CSI and the prodigy end up as little girls lost. Yeah, maybe it’s a tidy little bow with which to wrap up a complicated character that had fans falling on both sides of the love/hate divide. But look at it this way: We damn sure won’t forget her.

What did you think of Fox's CSI swan song? And will her character be missed as the show goes on without her? Let your feelings out in the comments section below.

I'm so glad she is gone. Now I can enjoy the show. They should have never rehired her in 2004

Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 02:13 AM EST

To be honest I just missed bumping into her and I didn't realize who it was til after she went into a lotion store.

Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 02:11 AM EST

I think I may have seen Jorja Fox outside CBS studios today shopping.

Vickie Sorensen Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

I thought Sara's final episode was fantastic. The kiss, the note for Gil - just great. Will miss her character and hope she returns.

Pam in canada Sat, Apr 12, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

I am very sad to see her go, although she wasn't reight for Gil and I'd like to see Catherine mend his broken heart. There was always a sensual tension there and lets see it get played out and this time for all to see!

Billy D Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 08:49 AM EST

Always sad to see a character leave a good show after so long. Will miss you Jorga, but must respect your wishes. All the very best for the future.

Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

WHY DID SHE LEAVEE?????????????? i am actually depresed now:(

GrissomLover Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 03:07 PM EST

I think Jorja leaving the way she did after Grissom Proposed was a cheating way to leave the show. I was not impressed.

GrissomSara4ever Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:33 AM EST

Hey I don't like that Greg Sanders person because he's just jealous because Sara never did like him like that and he was always jealous! Greg needs to get over himself! GSR forever

Jorga.. come back!!!!! I miss you!! You were my favorite!!!!!

I'll miss her, I think the writers did a good job in her final show and she acted it superbly.

Sherman Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:37 AM EST

sorry to see her go. I thought she was a hottie. It is good to know she will be back. I will watch for those episodes.

Denny Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 10:05 PM EST

Really hate to see her go, was my favorite. The writers should go, they
screwed up her character.

Jill Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 07:42 PM EST

I'M very sorry to see Jorja leave. but she gave a wonderful performance in her last eppy.

Lola Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 06:23 PM EST

I thought jorja was briliant. but I will miss Sara a lot

Betty Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 06:16 PM EST

I could not stop cheering! We are finally rid of her, never should have killed off Holly Gribbs. Thank God.

Tweety bird Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 06:13 PM EST

I'm glad she's gone, I never liked Sara and I think the show can only get better now that she's gone. Thanks for leaving Jorja.

Jack Frost Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 06:11 PM EST

I thought her exit was long overdue, stupid writers almost killed my fave show with her ridicules so-called romance with Grissom. So long Sara I hope Jorja finds something to keep her occupied and away from CSI.

Rob Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 06:08 PM EST

I stopped watched last season after the whole GSR thing was revealed. now that Sara is gone I have begun watching again. I just hope she stays away.

Ann Sun, Nov 25, 2007 at 06:44 PM EST

Best thing to happen to CSI ever! Though she took the cowards way out, didn't even have the decency to tell Grissom who she supposedly loved (yeah right) to his face! Jorja Fox, do us a favor and stay away!

Bobby Wo Sun, Nov 25, 2007 at 06:41 PM EST

So long Sara, don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. Don't come back. You won't be missed. Sara was so dark and depressing and plain boring! Glad she's gone.

Greg Sanders Sun, Nov 25, 2007 at 06:38 PM EST

I won't miss her, CSI made a huge mistake with the pairing of Grissom and Sara who had no chemistry whatsoever! Now I can enjoy my favorite show again. Give Greg a promotion and a bigger presence on the show, he deserves it.

CSIWannaBe Sun, Nov 25, 2007 at 06:35 PM EST

Would have been so much better to have her die at the hands of crazy Natalie, instead of shoving GSR down our throats until almost mid season. I'm glad she's gone and I'm glad GSR is over. Bye Bye Jorja, please don't come back!

Dee Sun, Nov 25, 2007 at 06:23 PM EST

Good Riddance - CSI will be so much better without Sara. Best thing about it - NO MORE GSR!!!

Joyce S. Sun, Nov 25, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

It's like losing a good friend ! I hope she will return. I will enjoy seeing what happens to her and her boyfriend Gill.........

KJ Sat, Nov 24, 2007 at 07:06 PM EST

The episode after Jorja's departure was really terrible. Who wrote it? The director's kid? They need to bring Jorja back ASAP if they want to save this show. Strong ensemble cast shows that start deleting their cast members usually end up off the air within a very short period of time. I hope that wont happen to CSI. I know I wont be watching again unless/until Jorja returns and the entire cast can get back to making the shows they have become famous for.

M.J Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 08:15 PM EST

I was really sad when sara left the show i was kind of confused why they got all of us who were a fan of hers all excited when she didint die in the opening and then let her go again. I feel really sad for Gil he loved her and that was sad. And for the guy who said i only watch shows for the pretty girls at least she isnt the one going anround flashing her boobs to every guy that walks past don't like that get a knew show dork!!!

Wryly Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 11:11 AM EST

I don't think Sara's breakdown was sudden - I think she wasn't able to deal with after affects from the kidnapping. Plus - she's been close to burnout before, hasn't she?
I think the goodbye letter, while a dramatic cop-out, did work in that Gil wrote letters to her. In one he said that he often wrote what he had difficulty saying.
(What creeped me out was the model that he was working on while she was reading his letter to her.)

I do think Sara really bullied the little girl when she showed her the picture of her dead brother.

As for Jorja Fox: I didn't know she'd been on ER. I remember her from West Wing. She's one of the reasons I watched CSI in the first place. I didn't always like Sara - because sometimes she came across as a whiney brat. But I do like Jorja - not a conventional beauty but at least she isn't scared to play a smart woman who knows she doesn't have to flash her boobs. I wish her luck.

Brian Tue, Nov 20, 2007 at 12:16 AM EST

Crappy ending. Can't anyone ever wind up happy in these things? Couldn't she walk away from the job and stay in Vegas? Did she have to break Grissom's heart too. Lousy story.

Monica Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 11:40 PM EST

I loved Sara's exit. In a way, the things she says to Gil in her letter are the things that describe what she must have felt leaving the show. As she said in the interview with you guys, it was a difficult decision, but in the end she had to. Sara's words "know that I tried to stay" I think are also Jorja's.

The episode itself was so-so, I think. Her exit? Beautiful. The way she reads that letter is amazing. I will miss her!

Jean Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 06:52 PM EST

She has the sexiest gap between her teeth... ever

DanOregon Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 04:09 PM EST

I don't know if that was her character or what, but I can't remember the last time she appeared happy on screen. Sure, its a grim job, but even after hooking up with Grissom (who she thought would be the answer to her crummy life) she seemed dissatisfied with her lot in life and not even enthusiastic about the science. Maybe she can reunite with here genius brother on Criminal Minds?

I liked her character and I liked her with Grisom. I am disappointed she has left the show.

Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 02:49 PM EST

I really liked the Gil and Sarah backstory (yes, I'm the one) but I thought the way it ended was so sad. Gil wouldn't let the love of his life wander out of his life like that - in that mental state. I just can't see it. I think he'd go after her and make sure she gets the help she needs. As for Sara leaving a letter she's always walked this tortured thin line between emotional, vulnerable, and this stoic independent person. I don't think she ever learned how to be all three - probably the closest she ever came was with Gil.

Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

To Gary -
Until the lighting/electrical system has been OK'd you don't want to turn it on. Someone could have rigged it so that there would be an explosion or fire thereby destroying all the evidence. Also, the general rule of thumb is that you enter a crime scene as you find it and work it in that state until its cleared.

j Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

so glad she's gone! couldn't stand jorja & hated sara. super ugly too. i don't watch tv for the ugly people, only for the pretty ones. that's super shallow i know but whatever!

Amy Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 01:59 PM EST

I guess I don't understand why they didn't just kill Sara off when she was in the desert. To have her come back from that and then bail the way she did; I think many that liked her are going to see this as a blight on her character. I personally did not like the Sara character or Jorja Fox, nor did I like her on E.R. I just think that it was the wrong way for them to take Sara's exit, she was supposed to be strong and independant yet she couldn't tell her lover Gil how she felt and why she needed to leave face to face? It just didn't make sense.

rob mathews Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 01:13 PM EST

good riddance. she was the least interesting character on any of the CSI's. hope she never comes back.

GT Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 12:46 PM EST

I thought the way they wrote the last episode was kind of lame. Sara was obviously going through huge personal troubles, but no one really cared or tried to help. The most we got was Warick asking if she was ok then not sticking around to talk to her. Even when she kissed Grissom at work (totally out of character for her) he didn't make the effort to find out what was up with her. In the end she left with a letter and his facial expression was sort of half upset half "what are you gonna do". When realistically with the amount of issues she has someone who loves her should be really worried what she might do to herself once she leaves.

Nancy Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

Wasn't it Nick Stokes who was buried alive in a coffin in a previous season? I think that would be much more traumatic than Sarah being trapped under the car. I never did like the Sarah character...too much of a drama queen...and I'm so relieved to see her go.

As for the goodbye note, it was also done on Criminal Minds albeit not a romantic one. That was pretty shalow of her to break it off like that but then her character always seemed shallow and self-serving to me.

Zan.Bee Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

CSI made a mistake making Sara and Gill's relationships into a plot, rather than a character device. No one wants to see them fawn over each other. Thank god it's over.

Pam Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 10:52 AM EST

Now that Sara's gone and I don't have to deal with her and Grissom together, can CSI get back to being the show I used to love?

Dana Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 10:41 AM EST

I will miss Jorja Fox and her character. It was nice to see a woman as a CSI whose breasts weren't always hanging out. I can't stand the new woman, Sophia.

Her last episode was good, but I didn't like that she left Gil via letter and not face to face. They could have ended with her still dating Gil but just quiting her job then she could have done guest spots and we could have scene Sarah and Gil interact outside of the work place. Although I did love his chemistry with Lady Heather so maybe we will see more of her again????

Maryutah Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 10:11 AM EST

Grissom (William Peterson) is one of the best characters on TV, and I think his quirkiness was well served with his relationship with Sara, she understood him - and he her. Their relationship was subtle but interesting, so i'll miss that dynamic. The shows real hook, however is the CSI part, so the character backstories are a nice bonus, but not required, so I think tho leaving is sad, the show will continue to be one of the top on TV

cookiemac Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 09:08 AM EST

I can understand Jorja's reasons for leaving the show. I have found that some of the violence on the show has gotten more graphic in the last couple of years. Couldn't imagine dealing with that for 8 years. Still love the show, and thought her departure was great and sad. Left it open for her to return once she "finds herself", even as a guest spot

Lene Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 11:31 PM EST

Sara's never been my favourite character and the relationship with Grissom just didn't work - I still bemoan the end of whatever he had with Sophia. They had chemistry. As did he and Lady Heather. However, I thought Sara's last episode rang true - she's tried to stay, but clearly can't. Sad, confusing, difficult to understand. Just like real life. I very much like that they didn't wrap it up in a neat bow. That's why Vegas rocks and Miami and N.Y. don't.

plushpuppy Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 08:44 PM EST

I wouldn't say she got her start on CSI just her lift. She was in memento as the main characters wife and was in ER. Maybe she is just burnout, I know I feel that way some days.

beverly Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 07:06 PM EST

i am shock to find out that she.s leaving grissom ,, i was traveling and missed the show thursday but i never thought she would walk off and leave grissom hanging ...poor gil

rosemarie Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 06:35 PM EST

I thought that it was a very undignified exit. She accepted Grissom's marriage proposal, then just leaves? How dumb is that.

rosemarie Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 06:35 PM EST

Cynthia Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 03:42 PM EST

The Dear Grissom ltr exit was lame. It would've been more dramatic to have her killed off in the season opener. I also didn't buy her sudden change in attitude with regards to the death and violence of her job. The show won't suffer, and I won't miss her character.

1MizLiz Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 03:09 PM EST

Ho, hum! I never did buy the relationship between her and Gil. There were a number of other female characters with whom the writers could have built more interesting relationships, as noted in other replies. I have otherwise loved the series and look forward to seeing what develops. BTW, I agree with person who criticized them going in with little flashlights instead of turning on the lights. That has bothered me for a long time. It may not have the "dramatic impact" of discovering details of the scene with little flashlights, but it would be much more sensible and less annoying.

Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

Garry - you are fussy one, aren't you?

Garry Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 12:10 PM EST

By the way, can someone explain why is it that when the CSI people enter a crime scene in a darkened room, they NEVER switch on the lights so they can see where they're going? They always insist on using their dinky flashlights. Flicking on a light switch won't disturb any evidence, not even possible fingerprints on the switch, if they're wearing gloves (and I've never seen them dust for fingerprints on light switches, anyway). It just looks so silly when they do that.

Adrien Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 11:08 AM EST

It was an exceptional episode and Jorja carried the show all the way through. She looked physically tired and her interaction with Hannah, her bewilderment at Hannah actions and Hannahs attempts to manipulate her was awesome. If you didn't know that it was her last episode (for awhile she will be back)you felt that she was going to either explode in a rage or have some kind of breakdown. I hope she comeback soon and stays till the end. P.S. I can not understand why some people hate her so much Sara isn't a cookie cutter character she complicated, has a past that haunts her and has shaped her psyche. Jorja has taken this character to a level that half the actress on TV will never be able to reach.

Jakeem Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 03:14 AM EST

Before she began playing Sara Sidle, Jorja was a cast member of "ER," the "CSI" of the '90s in terms of ratings power. It's not as if she had never been on a major series before. And it's not as if she left "CSI" after the first year. This IS Season 8, you know! How long did George Clooney stick with "ER"?

LS Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 10:52 PM EST

It really irritates me when basic unknowns that get their start on a series that ends up being a hit decide to move on. They owe more than that to their fans.

S. Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 04:24 PM EST

They should have just killed her off. Would have made for much better baggage for Gil and the rest of the team, plus been slightly unpredictable. (Cause, come on, like we didn't know she'd get out from under that car?) Take a page from Lost and risk killing off a main character when the storyline calls for it. (Especially since she was leaving anyway.)
I'll add my vote to see Gil and Lady Heather together -- although the last time we saw Lady Heather, the writers messed her up, too. But those two have chemistry, and would be great to watch them jockey for the dom position. (g)

SSCF Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 03:12 PM EST

Very heartwrenching, lovely preformance by Jorja Fox. As sad as I am to see her leave, I respect her decision. Her distincitve style will be greatly missed.

Montserrat Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 02:34 PM EST

I liked Jorja, I like her gravel smoky voice, which fit so well with the Las Vegas landscape. She was often prickly, not very likeable, but she always gave the impression of being the real thing. I'll miss her.

Patty Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 02:02 PM EST

Good riddance! She was always mopey, it just got worse this year. I was never fond of the character and didn't believe in the pairing with Grissom. I would love to see Hodges become a CSI, but they probably need another female for balance and the new chick will slowly build up to be a regular.

pai Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

I liked the episode. It was a nice close for her, lots of subtle moments.

LIndsey Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

I liked her character. She was the one that I could relate to. She was quiet but always curious. And I loved the relationship she had with Gil. I think however they should have ended it with her just leaving the job not the area so her and Gil could continue thier relationship. Older men are SEXY.

Stacydii Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 12:49 PM EST

Goodbye Sara, hello to Gris & Lady Heather. Those two had SOOOOOO much more chemistry, besides Grissom totally understood her.

ayu Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 11:03 AM EST

so so so very sad
jorja as well as sara is such a character on tv. she's perfect for the role and the role is perfect for her. ( i never like the girls from csi miami - which i think unsuitable)

gonna miss her.
please bring her back.

TanziTwo Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 11:01 AM EST

I didn't like the Sidle character the first few years, the last few she was great to watch. Grissom got new depth when we discovered their discrete affair. They have been tender when we see them together. Sidle burned out - she was going thru life with a haze/glaze over her (think Pigpen). Her goodbye letter, what she said and the way she said it, was one of the classy exits from a show - ever. I think we may see her and Gil again, when Grissom vacations! (booty-call)

Garry Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 10:45 AM EST

I'd rather see more of the gorgeous Det. Sophia Curtis (Louise Lombard) now that there's a little more elbow room on the show...but she hasn't been around much lately. Too bad!

Garry Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 10:44 AM EST

I'd rather see more of the gorgeous Det. Sophia Curtis now that there's a little more elbow room on the show...but I doubt that will happen.

Cammie Lee Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 09:24 AM EST

I loved the episode and I was cheering her departure at the end. I never liked Sara or her obsession with Grissom. I believe CSI will be better off without her. I want to see Greg's character move up in the ranks and be more prominent. I will not miss her.

Dee Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 09:18 AM EST

I think it the best thing to happen to CSI. Sara has always been annoying and a very dark, depressing character. Her relationship with Grissom ruined CSI for me so I am glad it is over. Now maybe the writers can focus on cases again and the other cast memebers. CSI will be so much better without Sara.

Garry Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 08:07 AM EST

Jorja Fox has been a regular cast member, at one time or another, on three of the biggest dramas of the past 10 years: ER, The West Wing, and CSI. She's done all right for herself, so I can't exactly relate to her desire to go on to bigger and better things (and more money). But she does have an unconventional kind of beauty, and is always compelling to watch.

As for the Sara character, I'm bewildered--she accepts Gil's proposal one minute then leaves him flat the next. I don't care if she wrote in her "Dear Gil" letter that she loves him--she could have quit the job but still stay with him, no? She just dumped him with no warning, no heart-to-heart about the stress she has been under lately, nothing. But then, I never thought their relationship had much spark. When did they ever even SMILE at each other, the way people do when they're in love? Not very often over the past several years. A casual observer would be surprised that they had a personal relationship at all. Oh well.

Kacey Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 07:36 AM EST

Never liked her. Glad she's gone. We cheered when we found out she was leaving the show. Sara & Gil together? EWWWW!! Gil & Lady Heather, anyone? Now THAT would be an interesting relationship.

robert Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 04:02 AM EST

Why did it take Gil so long to try and find her after she kissed him...Jorja is a great ensemble actress, but a stand alone lead actress remains to be seen.

BJohnson Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 03:18 AM EST

I can understand her leaving while the show is still on top. Yeah Sherry Stringfield left then came back but her reason was more of exhaustion and being overwhelmed at the crazy fame she gained. Sara's exit was very realistic for TV, I liked that she did get to make that little girl cry. I like the girl who's there to replace her, she's sweet..it won't last. haha. I wish Jorja the best to find what she's looking for.

glg Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 01:43 AM EST

I was never a fan of Sara, but I was moved by her realistic departure from the show. And Jorja's explanation for wanting to leave and pursue other roles is also completely understandable. Though I wonder about the break-up-letter-motif - this is the second goodbye through a letter we've seen, the first on CSI:NY, sent to Mac. Poor CSI guys. At least Gil has his fetal pig and bugs.

donner Sat, Nov 17, 2007 at 01:12 AM EST

I like Jorja, but never really felt the love for Sara...I'm not sorry to see her go, but I enjoyed Greg's flirting with her...I hope they kick up Hodges from the lab and send him out on the field...But I also hope Jorja finds what she's looking for...walking away from the #1 show - not always the smartest thing...Sherry Stringfield, anyone?

i loved jorga's character, and believe she is one of the very best actor's on the show. she will be missed alot. i love her and grissom together, just didn't last long enough.i hope she comes back soon, the show won't be the same without her. she should make the money she deserves. i'm sure she is paid much less then all the rest of the cast.well, i hope they will consider all the shows fans, and the fans of jorja's,and do what it takes to get her back there where she belongs.

I was soo sad for Grissom!!! Generally, I thought the episode was good. She was convincingly riled enough to warrant an emergency exit.

I think the Sara character was a complex and interesting one...and played very convincingly by the very pleasant looking Jorja Fox....but as usual, the show will go on....no doubt another very interesting character will become part of the CSI team and the actor/actress who is chosen to replace Sara will do just as well in his/her respective role.

I am sad, I agree Tommy-all about the money. I am just glad she will move on to bigger and brighter things. I love that she got to close that little puck kid story line!

I didnt like it at all. I think that she didnt take the roll that she needed to take at the end. sucks when its always about money! but guess what show she has 4 episodes coming up?
