What are the best soundtracks ever?

Oct 24, 2007, 04:58 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Film, Music, The 'Eh' List

Prince_rain_l With anticipation high for Jay-Z's soundtrack to American Gangster (due in stores Nov. 6), it's no wonder people are mulling over, once again, the question of what makes a good soundtrack. Too many soundtrack songs are chosen for marketing reasons, not because they actually complement what's happening on screen. At the same time, you'd like an album that holds together conceptually, that you can listen to without watching the movie. I used to think that, when it came to matching images with the ideal found songs, Martin Scorsese and Jonathan Demme had no peers, but lately, such directors as Quentin Tarantino, Sofia Coppola, Zach Braff, and Wes Anderson have joined that list.

We know you PopWatchers obsess over soundtracks as much as we do, so we wonder what you'll think of the latest contribution to the discussion, this one from Vanity Fair. The magazine has compiled a list of the 40 best soundtracks of all time for its next issue, but the top 10 have been made public. Hard to argue with Prince's Purple Rain (pictured) at No. 1, but this list does skew kinda old. Aside from Tarantino's Pulp Fiction and Danny Boyle's Trainspotting, no other movies from the last 20 years cracked the top 10, which otherwise consists of such (admittedly unassailable) Boomer favorites as A Hard Day's Night, The Harder They Come, American Graffiti, Saturday Night Fever, and The Big Chill. Still, where's Braff's Garden State? Where's The Matrix? And where's hip-hop? (No 8 Mile or Hustle & Flow?)

Maybe Jay-Z will make VF wish they'd waited for American Gangster, or maybe it won't merit a place on the list. Tell us, PopWatchers, what you think the best soundtracks are. Pick ones you still listen to, that have earned a place of honor in your CD collection or on your iPod.

Did anyone post "A Beautiful Mind"? Because as far as scores go, this is the most beautiful soundtrack out there. I am also a huge fan of the American Teen Soundtrack(look it up - fantastic!) as well as Magnolia (of course) the godfather soundtracks, Garden State, Atonement (love the use of typewriter keys in this one!) and to use an old fave, Rushmore. Almost Famous, Fear and Loathing, and any Wes Anderson film's track are always on my recently played as well.

Best soundtrack ever.

Mauricio Fri, Nov 2, 2007 at 05:15 PM EST

You should hear The Secret´s soundtrack, thats excellent!

kcholt68 Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 04:41 AM EST

"Skew kinda old"? Only EW would complain about that, with their lists of the "greatest" barely breaking that 20 year mark. Get real.

City of Angels
The Lost Boys
Forest Gump
Philadelphia
Boys On The Side
Practical Magic
The Big Chill

Jessica Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 09:55 PM EST

Oh! I forgot! V for Vendetta. Highlights include "Bird Gerhl", "Cry me a River", Cat Power's "I Found a Reason" and when the 1812 overture kicks in during "Knives and Bullets (and Cannons too)".

Jessica Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 08:43 PM EST

Go
Romeo and Juliet
The Life Aquatic
Kill Bill vol. 1
Empire Records
Oh Brother Where art Thou
The Big Chill
Grosse Point Blank
Groove
The Graduate
Almost Famous
Great Expectations
Garden State
The Matrix
Moulin Rouge (although it's kind of a musical)
Ditto the Nightmare before Christmas.

I understand if they don't include musicals; they are in their own category. But if they do, then the best musical soundtracks are; Rocky Horror, Cabaret, Rent (although really the stage recording is better), Evita, Chicago, West Side Story, Dreamgirls, Hair, Godspell, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, Showboat, Singin' in the rain, and since probably no one else will mention it, Reefer Madness makes me laugh

Bri Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

Moulin Rouge
Pirates 2 and 3
Pride and Prejudice
Finding Neverland
My Fair Lady

Liz Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 02:52 PM EST

Oh, and the Judgement Night soundtrack...it did something so groundbreaking for that time..the Teenage Fan Club and De La Soul song is amazing

Liz Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 02:51 PM EST

PRETTY IN PINK is the all time best because I loved 20 years ago just as much as I do now.
Ones I love now:
-The Virgin Suicides
-Rushmore

In my youth:
-Stand By Me
-Batman
-Footloose
-Beverly Hills Cop 2
(hours of music to make dance routines to at Slumber parties)

Then and now: Pretty in Pink and Purple Rain

Sarah Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

I love the Queen of the Damned soundtrack. They screwed up the movie, but I still listen to those songs regularly.

Patti Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 02:08 PM EST

Have you ever noticed some of the worst movies have the best soundtracks? I was going thru my collection and noticed if it weren't for the soundtrack, I don't think I would have anything good to say about some films.

My faves (not necessarily the movie too):
Natural Born Killers - intermixing dialogue is key
PCU
Cruel Intentions
Magnolia
The Royal Tennenbaums
Pretty in Pink
Some Kind of Wonderful
200 Cigerettes
50 First Dates
A Bronx Tale
Forrest Gump
Grosse Pointe Blank
Go
Honeymoon in Vegas
I Am Sam
Kill Bill Vol. 1
Vanilla Sky
The X-Files

Coach's Mistress Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 02:04 PM EST

Moulin Rouge is the best soundtrack in more recent times. Followed closely by the first Shrek soundtrack.

Dave Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 01:33 PM EST

I love "Ocean's Eleven" and "Ocean's Twelve." And "Get Shorty!" (And I'll second that emotion on "Moulin Rogue" & "Oh Brother...")

Strepsi Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

I can't believe I forgot

FLASHDANCE!

tk Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

I can't argue with Purple Rain - Love the movie, love the album....

I also really like:
Waiting to Exhale (after hearing Babyface on Oprah the other day, you would have never known he put this one together)
The Best Man - it followed the movie to a T, hearing that soundtrack is like watching the movie...
Brown Sugar - I can't ever get enough of Mos Def, even if it has the Brown Sugar song like 4 times on the album...
Dreamgirls - fun soundtrack, my daughter bought it and I can't get enough of Move, Move, Move on Outta my Life or Steppin to the BAD Side...

I actually don't really watch alot of movies or buy soundtracks but these are hits by me....

Mozz Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

Dirty Dancing
The BodyGuard
Top Gun
Oh Brother, Where art Thou?
TransAmerica

Deuce Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 12:40 PM EST

Top 10 Soundtracks:
1) Purple Rain
2) The Matrix
3) Juice
4) Desperado
5) Crank (Kill all the white men???)
6) Say Anything
7) Pretty In Pink
8) Saturday Night Fever
9) A Hard Day's Night
10) Pulp Fiction
Honorable Mentions: Footloose, Blade, Repo Man, Spider-Man, Batman, Batman Forever...please understand that I forgot anyone, it's been a long day..and I'm tired.
Top 10 Scores:
1) StarWars/Empire Strikes Back/the Return of the Jedi
2) Superman: the Movie
3) The Warriors (Let's get to it, Boppers!! Can you dig it?)
4) City of Angels
5) Amadeus
6) The Harder they Come
7) Chariots of Fire
8) Rocky
9) Heat (haunting yet virile and strong)
10) the Lion King
Techincally, City of Angels the soundtrack was the rare combination of both soundtrack music and score from Gabriel Yaerd, so it can be easily replaced with another purely score.

JJL Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 12:38 PM EST

24 Hour Party People, Until the End of the World

Nav Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 12:36 PM EST

The soundtrack to 'Can't Hardly Wait'. Very good.

Jill Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 12:33 PM EST

SINGLES! SINGLES! SINGLES!

oh, and the Bodyguard ofcourse.

Jon Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 12:32 PM EST

Hello? Singles soundtrack. Greatest rock soundtrack ever.

dangle Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

My List:

Rocky - obviously one of the most used and recognized soundtracks ever

The Wedding Singer - catchy and funny all at once

Office Space - damn it feels good to be a gangsta...

Then as a whole I love listening to a lot of the Asian Epic soundtracks while I'm working. This includes Hero, House of Flying Daggers and to a lesser extent Memoirs of a Geisha. The music basically makes those films.

zac Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:53 AM EST

Give some love to The Crow people, The Saint is a good one

Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

I concur with purple rain at #1. Some of my other personal faves are Love Jones (excellent soul & jazz), Waiting to Exhale (Babyface at his finest), and Dreamgirls.

Kristen Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

Have to pick:
Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful (hooray, John Hughes!)
Green Card (cheesy movie, but loved the soundtrack--the whole thing is like a perfect rainy day)
I Am Sam
Moulin Rouge
Garden State
Forrest Gump is the ultimate soundtrack of 60's and 70's America

As far as scores go, could The Mission be any more wonderful?

Is it perfectly obvious that I'm in my 30's?

Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

Office Space!

Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:44 AM EST

Am I crazy to prefer Cry Baby over Hairspray?

Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

Anyone remember Repo Man? One of the best punk compilations ever.

Nicole Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

Romeo and Juliet (1996 version)

Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

Does it count if the movie was based on a stage musical? I think not.

Kelly Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:41 AM EST

Where the heck is U2's "Rattle and Hum"?! I still think that cd is amazing almost 20 years later.

I have to agree that "Purple Rain" is the best soundtrack ever. I still listen to it and find great things in it each time.

GeeMoney Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST

"Purple Rain" is the best soundtrack ever. I can't think of any other artist who is that much of a musical genius, like Prince.

Other good soundtracks: Batman #1 and Batman Forever soundtracks, Annie (yes, I know) and Reality Bites.

j Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

I have always loved the soundtrack to the movie Jesus Chris Superstar. Even spawned a hit song if I remember correctly.

Molly Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:12 AM EST

Urban Cowboy introduced a new trend - and a new fashion statement - once upon a time.

Silv Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:10 AM EST

I'd be remiss to leave out the Step Up soundtrack. I have most of those songs on my mp3 player!

Silv Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

My votes go to 8 Mile, Saturday Night Fever, The Big Chill, and Purple Rain. Each capture a great musical era.

Chris Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

I have to say, the soundtrack to Sofia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette" was one of the most intelligent uses of modern music in a film I have seen in a very long time.

And any of the Bond themes have to be mentioned in any discussion about film music. From "Diamonds Are Forever" to "Live and Let Die" to "GoldenEye" to "Die Another Die" to "You Know My Name", they'll all been great, but better yet, consistently entertaining.

m night shamoosey Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

1. Ray soundtrack
2. Malcolmn X
3. Belly
4. The Big Chill

Stef Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:53 AM EST

I still proudly listen to the Moulin Rouge soundtrack on my iPod.

MSJEVIUS Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:47 AM EST

Shonna,
i have to agree with you as well. i almost forgot about footloose. That is an excellent soundtrack. also on of my favs, just haven't listened in a while.

Anne Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

Maybe there should be a separate category for musical *scores* as they are quite different from soundtracks. I can't believe I don't see "Passion" by Peter Gabriel, the soundtrack (score) to "The Last Temptation of Christ".

Puffin Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:43 AM EST

Purple Rain soundtrack definitely tops the list. Notable mentions in my opinion are: Run, Lola, Run!, Platoon, Born on the 4th of July, Almost Famous, A Chorus Line (state), Grease, Saturday Night Fever...and don't forget XANADU! Bad movie - pretty good music!

MSJEVIUS Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:42 AM EST

i STILL LOVE AND LISTEN TO THE SOUNDTRACK FROM OZ.. THE HBO ORIGINAL SERIES. IT IS ONE OF THE GREATEST HIP HOP ALBUMS LET ALONE A GREAT SOUNDTRACK. AND OF COURSE 8 MILE TOO. BUT MY BEST ALL TIME SOUNDTRACK IS AND ALWYS WILL BE GREASE.

Scott Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:41 AM EST

How about Queen's weird and wild soundtrack to Flash Gordon

Scott Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:38 AM EST

Ry Cooder has been creating magnificent movie soundtrack music for decades. His soundtracks for Johnny Handsome, and especially Paris Texas are easily among the best non-orchestral movie soundtracks ever.

Jennifer Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:37 AM EST

Oh and Urban Cowboy was great. They got it right with #1-I still listen to Purple Rain. It is the best soundtrack ever!!

jones Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:36 AM EST

Big Chill, Grease, Garden State, and Pretty in Pink.
And Klo I agree with you about Boomerang. Loved it!

jess Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:33 AM EST

-requiem for a dream
-elizabethtown
-garden state
-the last kiss

Missy Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:32 AM EST

I listen to the soundtracks to Grosse Pointe Blank and The Commitments at least once a week or so. And while not a movie, I listen to the soundtrack to The Beatles "LOVE" every week (sometimes two or three times).

shonna Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:31 AM EST

Garden State
Flashdance
Footloose
Moulin Rouge

rockgolf Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:29 AM EST

FM - a late 70's movie with a fabulous classic rock soundtrack including the title track by Steely Dan.

No Nukes - Soundtrack to the concert film. Bruce, JT, Doobies, Jackson Browne and a future congressman John Hall (lead singer of Orleans).

Manuel Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:27 AM EST

I really like Magnolia and The Royal Tennembaums... but my all time favorite is the Maire-Antoinette Soundtrack

Amber Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:21 AM EST

Moulin Rouge is by far my favorite soundtrack. I also love Blue Crush, Pride & Prejudice, and Ten Things I Hate About You.

denny Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:21 AM EST

This Is Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind, which are both great parodies, but also just flat-out good music, which takes them beyond the level of mere parody or tribute.

Garden State : today :: The Graduate : 1960s/70s (Sorry. Studying for the GREs)

In The Mood for Love's soundtrack is just gorgeous. I could listen to it all day.

Requiem For A Dream is absolutely mind-blowing.

Aimee Mann's Magnolia soundtrack is also great, but it depresses me so.

BUT, while all of these are great in their own right, I have only ever purchased one soundtrack: Tan Dun's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon score.

Jennifer Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:20 AM EST

Valley Girl was pretty awesome

Emilee Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:08 AM EST

I like listening to the soundtracks of Amelie, Moulin Rouge, O Brother Where Art Thou, Cold Mountain, Trainspotting
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Stranger than Fiction, Friday Night Lights (the movie), The Lord of the Rings, Walk the Line, A Hard Days Night, Help, Magical Mystery Tour, and Garden State.

Snooks Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:05 AM EST

-Last Kiss

Jack McCovey Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:03 AM EST

Grosse Point Blank is the best soundtrack ever. Period.

Gavin Hill Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 10:02 AM EST

Spider-Man 3! Still listening to it since May 07.

michelle Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 09:55 AM EST

Do they all have to be movies from the last ten years??? How about some different music like Phantom of the Opera for the beautiful singing of Emmy Rossum, Johnathon Livingston Seagull for the strings by the beach music sung and played by Neil Diamond, Last of the Mohicans with the Irish/Colonial thing going on. There are so many others!

Jeff Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 09:55 AM EST

Pretty in Pink all the way! I still listen to it!! Footloose is cheesy now, but in its day, every single song was a hit. Same with Top Gun, no matter how dated it is now, back then it was pretty darn cool....

Joanster Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 09:53 AM EST

The Bodyguard (my secret shame)

Allison Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 09:50 AM EST

Hands down, without a doubt in the world, Purple Rain is the best soundtrack EVER. It's just one of the best albums ever period.

Lloyd Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 09:35 AM EST

Holy crap, the best ever is the GROSS POINTE BLANK soundtrack. Love it so much.

After that, there are a few: PULP FICTION, HIGH FIDELITY, and any of Wes Anderson's films- RUSHMORE and THE ROYAL TENENBAUM'S being standouts- the perfect songs combined with a perfect score by MARK MOTHERSBAUGH from DEVO.

The newest classic is the soundtrack to ONCE. My favorite film of the year, easily.

Stephanie T. Thu, Oct 25, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST

crappy movie with a great sound track was Val Kilmer's "The Saint". Cool electronica. Another was "Spawn" with an awesome hard rock track

"Good Night and Good Luck" is my favorite.
