The Best Music of 2007: An early handicapping

Sep 28, 2007, 06:00 AM | by LaRue Cook

Categories: Music

Sol_l At the end of every year, a couple of my pretentious music snob relatives and I exchange our 15-track, "Best of" mix CDs. We always attempt to one-up each other, whether it's by digging deep into our indie piles for that one forgotten gem from January or sneaking in a hit summer single that still pops the cork of a champagne bottle on New Year's Eve. I can already envision my playlist recipe for 2007: a dash of Kings, a pinch of Spoon, a handful of Andrew Bird and St. Vincent, and I'll have to stir in some Kanye or he may never be on my album again. Unlike Christmas shopping, however, I’m trying to get an early start on deciding my under-the-radar joints, my "sleepers," if you will.

So far, I've got the usual suspects on my list: The National, Sunset Rubdown, Devendra Banhart, Joe Henry, et. al. But I've been kicking around the new Shout Out Louds (pictured) album Our Ill Wills since it dropped about two weeks ago. I've come to the conclusion that at least one song will have to squeeze its way in.

With the hundreds of CDs piling up on desks here at EW, it's difficult for our savvy bunch of critics to get them all in the magazine. Some worthy candidates become victims of album saturation, and I'd say the SOLs were, well, just SOL. You may have already heard the anchor single, "Tonight I Have To Leave It," but I can't get the hook-heavy, guitar-bending track "Normandie" out of my head. It reminds me of a summer night riding around drinking beer and bashing mailboxes in my hometown. I can see the video now: young star-crossed lovers making out in the back of a convertible as their friend swerves down the highway, all of them trying to slough off their teenage angst. And, yeah, the band's basically the second coming of The Cure — as if Adam Olenius took voice lessons from Robert Smith — but you still can’t deny the musicianship. (Check it out via the YouTube clip embedded below.)

So, PopWatchers, what do you think of the kids from Sweden? And what other bands have we slept on in the first nine months of 2007?

Tracey Thorn - Out of the Woods

jay Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 06:53 PM EST

Bjork "Volta" came out around May or June and was on constant rotation from June till September. Amazing. I also love the new M.I.A album. If I see those two on some best-of lists, I'll be happy.

Pam Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 04:09 PM EST

I do have to say Lily Allen's album took over my ipod for 4 months of my life...

Sara Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 03:12 PM EST

I'm a big fan of:
Lily Allen "Alright Still"
Kanye West "Graduation"
Arcade Fire "Neon Bible"
Bright Eyes "Cassadega"
Mika "Life in Cartoon Motion"
Tegan and Sara "The Con"
Common "Finding Forever"

Corinne Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

I agree the Shout Out Louds are the best I've heard this year. The album rocks.

gawagai Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

The Album of the year is clearly In Rainbows! No other releases touches de brillance of In Rainbows.

Liz Tue, Oct 2, 2007 at 02:33 PM EST

Year Zero- NIN

jess Mon, Oct 1, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

anything by the presets or onerepublic :)

Laci Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 11:00 AM EST

Rilo Kiley and their new album, "Under the Blacklight" deserves much recognition.

Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 06:33 PM EST

Ok, maybe folks in Britain got it for free but Prince has a great CD. EW even gave it 3-4 stars. It's great music but....no one will play it on the radio. :o(

Katie Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 02:03 PM EST

so glad some people have mentioned kate nash...what an amazing artist. anything off "made of bricks" would be a worthy addition to any top ten. she already has my vote for year's best album.

Casey Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 10:16 AM EST

You better include:
Pearl Jam's "Love, Reign Over Me"
Eddie Vedder's "Hard Sun"
The White Stripes' "Icky Thump"
Modest Mouse's "Dashboard"
Okkervil River's "Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe"

Celi Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 04:32 AM EST

No love for Bat for Lashes? I joined the Amy Winehouse lovefest quite early on - still think she's fabulous - but I'm still puzzled why BfL hasn't made a bigger impact stateside. "Prescilla", "The Horse and I" and "Sad Eyes" are particularly good.

Apart from that rant...

"You Don't Know What Love Is" by the White Stripes
"Someone Great" by LCD Soundsystem
"Tears Dry On Their Own" by Amy Winehouse
"Intervention" by Arcade Fire

are all on my list.

Joe Sat, Sep 29, 2007 at 12:53 AM EST

The National--Green Gloves
Of Montreal--A Sentence of Sorts in Kongsvinger
Amy Winehouse--Tears Dry on Their Own
The New Pornographers--Adventures in Solitude
Jarvis Cocker--Heavy Weather
Feist--How My Heart Behaves
Stars--My Favorite Book
Suzanne Vega--Anniversary
Arcade Fire--No Cars Go
Garbage--Tell Me Where It Hurts
Lucky Soul--The Great Unwanted

Stephen to Phil Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:25 PM EST

I live in Syracuse, NY and "Umbrella" is the only song that gets constant radio play. "Shut Up and Drive" does make the rounds, jst not as heavily. The only time I've heard "Hate That I Love You" on the radio so far is on the college station. And I don't like that song, b/c Ne-Yo just used the same beat he used in "sexylove." Plus, the videoo is crap. It rips off "Irreplacable" b/c both Rihanna and Beyonce just stand around in underwear. Not that I'm complaining. Thanks for the rec. of Emily King, I'll definiteyly check it out. Pleasure arguing with you again. lol

Phil Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:17 PM EST

Stephen I don't know what city you live in, but Rihanna had MULTIPLE radio hits this year, starting the year off with her last single from her 2nd album, "BREAK IT OFF" with Sean Paul. "Shut Up & Drive", "Hate That I Love You" & "Don't Stop The Music" were all played on the radio, and where I live in Philly, the pop station played "BREAKIN' DISHES" (which I still swear was originally intended for Beyonce's BDAY..it just fits sound-wise)! Anyways I HATE the White Stripes (more than you know, I feel they are TOTALLY OVER-XPOSED), please never mention them in a post with me again (haha) & Sir McCartney shoulda never made another album this year. M.I.A.'s KALA is a great cd, but she's so under-rated it makes me cry. Mark Ronson's VERSION cd is great, and I hope "STOP ME" is a hit here in the U.S. since I doubt they'll try and work Amy Winehouse's "VALERIE". And if you like Chrisette Michele, I HIGHLY recommend you snatching up the debut cd from Emily King EAST SIDE STORY! Its beautiful.

holly Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:12 PM EST

anberlin cities! why don't more people listen to this band?!?!

stephen to phil Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:56 PM EST

I'm not obsessed with beyonce or kelly. it's just the latter made a better album (IMO) than Rihanna, and "Umbrella" was her only radio hit. There have been many superior albums to Rihanna this year (White Stripes, M.I.A., Amy Winehouse, Josh Ritter, Chrisete Michele, Paul MCartney, to name a few) but ppl seem to paise her. Her voice sucks. Sorry. Also Phil, go back to the JT and B post and I explain why I defend her over JT.

Phil Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:13 PM EST

Stephen, I know you just LOVE Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce, but sweetie, let it go. yeah kelly filmed a new video for another single off MY DECEMBER, but I highly doubt it's going to be some huge hit. Anad AGAIN, Rihanna IS the entertainer of the year (so far)! "Umbrella" WAS the #1 song of the summer, and though I despised "Shut & Drive", it was a minor follow-up hit. "Don't Stop The Music" & its remixed blazed in the clubs all summe,r and on dance radio, AND now the duet with ne-Yo "Hate That I Love You" is being worked to pop and Urban radio. Rihanna has released 3 solo albums in as many years, but eventhough she had the BIGGEST single of the summer, her album is STILL not selling, which is kinda sad, since its a really good pop album. Yeah, magazines keep promoting her, but thats cause her album sales are not doing so great. its kinda sad cause she had one of the best pop albums of the year so far. It'll def. be on my year end Top 10 list. The girl is working her butt off!

Stephen to 'to stephen' Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 07:55 PM EST

I didn't say Kelly Clarkson should have the title. I was making a point how mags go with commercial success over more talented artists.

To stephen Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 07:34 PM EST

Rihanna would make far more sense than Kelly Clarkson.

Kate Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 06:47 PM EST

Easy Tiger by Ryan Adams is pretty good.

peteypabs Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 05:25 PM EST

also, year zero by NIN

peteypabs Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 05:24 PM EST

"straight lines" by silverchair

stephen to popwatchers Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 05:01 PM EST

How much do you guys want to bet that EW will ignore all our suggestions and name Rihanna entertainer/singer of the year?

Mary Beth Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 04:50 PM EST

You totally have to have "Battles" by Atlas on your CD. Definitely the kookiest indie song of 2007 what with the completely inaudible helium vocals.
Also:
Tegan and Sara, "The Con"
Flight of the Conchords, "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room"
Cold War Kids "Hospital Beds"

And since Arcade Fire was pretty popular this year - heck their album debuted in the top ten on Billboards - its hard for me to consider anything by them as a true sleeper hit of the year. So I would say 'no' to putting Arcade Fire on your mix album. Oh god that hurts to say, I love them so much!

lhass Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 04:49 PM EST

Your Ex-Lover is Dead- Stars
Bend and Not Break- Dashboard Confessional

Anything by Jack's Mannequin, My Favorite Highway, Rooney, Paolo Nutini, and Motion City Soundtrack!

lovedog Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 03:49 PM EST

MIA's Kala should be on the list ("Paper Planes"!).
Bat for Lashes, very excellent album. And Brazzaville, a band no one seems to know released a beautiful album, EAST L.A. BREEZE.

Kristen Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

Magic Alex - "Dated and Sexist"

I've been playing this CD in my car for several weeks and haven't taken it out of my player yet. It's one of the few CDs I own that I can listen to over and over again without skipping tracks. Highly recommended, especially if you're a fan of The Shins.

Honorable mentions:
Arcade Fire - "Neon Bible"
Interpol - "Our Love to Admire"
Charlotte Gainsbourg - "5:55"
Andrew Bird - "Armchair Apocrypha"

Gringo Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 03:17 PM EST

How could I have forgotten to acknowledge Kelly Clarkson? I bought it because I'm a fan, but was fully expecting the worst (as I did w/ The Killers last year). I was more than pleasantly surprised. And I didn't really care for it upon my first listen. Give it a few spins and you'll find that it really grows on you. Now there are so many great songs on it. No, I'm not a Clive Davis intern, Jadis...Remember, he doesn't even like it, so everyone here just truly loves it.

mememe Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 03:09 PM EST

I would definitely have to second and third Of Montreal. Arctic Monkeys was good too. Aesop Rock is the shiznit.

I do agree with the Kelly Clarkson assessment as well. That record was way better than I thought it would be, and I've never bought a record of hers (or any American Idol people) in my life.

h Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 02:57 PM EST

"the night starts here" by stars

moby disc Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 02:21 PM EST

!!! - Myth Takes
If you haven't heard this record, you need to buy more music.

Nic Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 02:02 PM EST

Anything off the Arctic Monkeys "Favourite Worst Nightmare." So good I can't even talk about it.

Scott P Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

I forgot to add my favorite workout song of the year, Queens of the Stone Age's "Sick Sick Sick."

Also, could EW let just about any of the people on this list write some music articles instead of the stuff that appears in the magazine?? The people here have picked out some fantastic outstanding music from this year.

Except for that whole Kelly Clarkson thing of course...

Nancy Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:29 PM EST

To Jadis - I've been known to talk up Kelly's album, too, because I believe it is an excellent disc, and it p*sses me off that her record company would bury it/her because it's not "commercial" enough. Heaven forbid an artist should stretch or be creative outside a commercial, board room-approved formula.

Robert jennings Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:25 PM EST

Guys lets not forget Wilco's Sky Blue Sky. Its still hands down the best record of the year.

Scott K Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:20 PM EST

Don't forget Junior Senior, LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire, Datarock, Mika, Imperial Teen, Nellie McKay, Bjork, Simple Kid, Prince and Stars.

stephen to jadis Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 01:05 PM EST

I constantly promote Kelly b/c her latest disc really spoke to me like good music should. And I don't think Clive would have interns promoting her, I doubt he's really fond of her.

Jadis White Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

What's with all the Kelly Clarkson fans constantly spamming the P Dub comments sections? Is Clive Davis getting some interns to spam you or what?

Jadis White Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:56 PM EST

You should check out:

Kate Nash - Made of Bricks
Patrick Cleandenim - Baby Comes Home
Misha - Teardrop Sweetheart
The Brunettes - Structure and Cosmetics

And of course, Art Brut - It's a Bit Complicated

Stephanie T. Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

After hearing them on David Letterman, I will have to say The National. The Fratellis are good too, but it sounded as if their timing was a bit off when they performed live.

Solsbury Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

I must give a shout-out to the self-titled debut of The Good, the Bad and the Queen.

jambajim Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

The Animal Collective output this year has been stellar. Both "Strawberry Jam" and the Panda Bear solo record "Person Pitch" are brilliant beyond belief. Also, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's sophomore offering "Some Loud Thunder" was unfairly maligned when it was first released back in January. In 5 years, people will rediscover and hail it as a classic. It's a GENIUS start-to-finish LP. Even better on vinyl!!!!

MusicNUtttt Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

To name a few:

Explosions In The Sky - All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone
Okkervill River - The Stage Names
Pelican - City Of Echoes
Machine Head - The Blackening
Kings Of Leon - Because Of The Times
Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace
The National - Boxer
Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris
The White Stripes - Icky Thump
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

Nancy Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

Oops - The Killer's CD is called "Sam's Town."

Nancy Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 12:12 PM EST

I feel like The Killers have not received enough recognition for their excellent sophomore disc. I recommend "Bling (Confessions of a King)", "For Reasons Unknown" or maybe even "Uncle Johnny." Great guitars, smart lyrics that could be called poetic, and great rock that must be played loud.

Aaron Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

I really like the new Jose Gonzalez CD, especially his cover of "Teardrop." Have loved recent discs from Tegan and Sara, Just Jack, and Miranda Lambert. You should definitely throw on a track from Mark Ronson's "Version" as well.

Ryan Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 11:26 AM EST

Collective Soul's new album "Afterwords" is great, one of their best albums. Now that they have their own label, they don't get the kind of play they used to, which is really a shame. They've always been so good at music that can be both catchy and thought provoking, and this album is no exception. It's very different from what people may remember them for in the 90s, which is a good thing since they're one of the few so-called post-grunge bands that are still around.

Robert Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

This has been an outstanding year for female indie bands - Tegan & Sara, Northern State, St. Vincent, etc. have all released outstanding albums. That's not to say that there haven't been good albums from guys, too, as the new Ted Leo & the Twilight Sad are both stellar.

Kevin Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

In addition to ones already mentioned

Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Kortedala
Handsome Furs - Plague Park
Patrick Wolf - The Magic Position

Hi Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:39 AM EST

Just listened to some of Shout out Louds album and really liked it.

For anyone interested they have this in Amazon's MP3 section. It's cheaper and better quality than getting it through iTunes but it will still load directly into iTunes. Pretty cool.

Gringo Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:21 AM EST

I thought I'd list some songs, too:

Aesop Rock - 'None Shall Pass'
Bishop Allen - 'Click, Click, Click, Click'
Kate Nash - 'The Sh*t Song'
Lo-Fi-Fnk - 'What's On Your Mind?'
The Bird And The Bee - 'Again & Again'
Pleasure - 'Out Of Love'
Lantana - 'Siempre'
MiNa - 'Complete'
Robyn - 'Cobrastyle'
Sondre Lerche - 'Say It All'
Gogol Bordello - 'Wanderlust King'
So many more, though...

Gringo Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

I'm always working on my year-ends, as I love to compile lists. While I may number these, they aren't in any particular order:

1. Siobhan Donaghy - 'Ghosts' (album) - former Sugababes co-founder, she channels Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos and Texas.
2. Margaret Berger - 'Pretty Scary Silver Fairy' (album) Former runner-up on Norwegian Idol, this electronic-pop-dance album is my guilty pleasure of the year. Every track is guiltastic.
3. A Fine Frenzy - 'One Cell In The Sea' - so far the leading candidate for best album
4. Of Montreal - 'Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?' - the groups most accessible album to date, get it quick cause it won't last. their next album is rumoured to be just the opposite. this one is pure gold and a lot of fun.

Jeff Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:12 AM EST

"Silver Lining" by Rilo Kiley

stephen Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:08 AM EST

Definitely Kelly Clarkson's "My December." She proved she has more talent than the crap that's on radio.

Potter Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:05 AM EST

Close second, the new Modest Mouse -- "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank".

Potter Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 10:04 AM EST

The best release of the year, hands-down, is Okkervil River's "The Stage Names". Start to finish, it's bloody perfect.

RTA Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 09:48 AM EST

Porcupine Tree's "Fear of a Blank Planet" is the best new music I've heard all year. Atmospheric yet powerful enough to blow a hole in your wall. This band has flown under the radar long enough.

shana Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 09:38 AM EST

MIKA
Rufus Wainwright-Release the Stars
Bright Eyes-Cassadega
Jeremy Fisher
Ben Lee
Patty Griffin

Clem Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 09:26 AM EST

I'm LOVING Kings of Leon, can't get enough. Also White Stripes Icky Thump and I'm looking forward to next Tuesday's release of the new Band of Horses.

Bobby Rowe Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 09:24 AM EST

I second Andrew on the Kelly Clarkson front. I will never meet a bigger KC fan than myself, but even I admit the album had its flaws. Still..."Sober", "Maybe", "Irvine," & "Dirty Little Secret" are some of her best tracks, if not her best.

I think the REAL news of this year though is Alice Smith. Thanks to this site's feature on her, I got the whole album is a landmark. Its the first time music has sounded creative in a very long time. A song that ends an uplifting ballad evolves there so perfectly over 3.5 minutes that you forget it started out sounding like the soundtrack to a blaxploitation movie.

"Gary's Song" by Alice Smith. I probably wouldn't argue with you if you put "Desert Song" instead.

Casey Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 09:16 AM EST

You better include:
Pearl Jam's "Love, Reign Over Me"
Eddie Vedder's "Hard Sun"
The White Stripes' "Icky Thump"
Modest Mouse's "Dashboard"
Okkervil River's "Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe"

Shannon Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 09:09 AM EST

I'm enjoying 2007 releases from Rilo Kiley, Spoon, the White Stripes, Stars, M.I.A., Arcade Fire, and The Black Lips.

Rebecca Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 08:49 AM EST

You've got to add Josh Ritter's "Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter" to your list. It's fabulous!

Scott P Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 08:27 AM EST

Battles' "Atlas" is by far one of my favorite songs of the year. Pretty much anything off LCD Soundsystem's cd would make it too, especially "All My Friends." My favorite track off Spoon's album is "You've Got Yr. Cherry Bomb."

I loved Shout Out Louds' last cd, I haven't had a chance to pick up the new one yet since I can't find it at a decent price in most stores. Looking forward to it very much though.

Tony Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 08:08 AM EST

Top 5:

5. The White Stripes - "Icky Thump"
4. of Montreal - "Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?"
3. Spoon - "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga"
2. M.I.A. - "Kala"
1. LCD Soundsystem - "Sound of Silver"

Andrew Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 07:34 AM EST

She may be uber-famous, but Kelly Clarkson... why the heck don't people realize that it's an amazing CD, and one of the best this year!

Jack Fear Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 07:29 AM EST

And just one more from me - my #2 spot goes to Maria McKee: the album is called LATE DECEMBER, and "No Other Way To Love You" is a stormer. Twenty years after Lone Justice, McKee's voice could still knock a bishop through a stained-glass window, and the chorus is an absolute earworm. Give it a listen and just *try* not sing along, I dare you.

Jack Fear Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 07:24 AM EST

Funny, I was just thinking about this today, compiling my own year-end Top Ten. The US press has definitely been sleeping on another Swedish band, The Ark, who do the glam-rock revival thing with better hooks and a better voice than The Darkness. The Ark album is called PRAYER FOR THE WEEKEND, and the lead single "Absolutely No Decorum" is my pick for song of the year - a huge, fist-pumping, live-while-you-can anthem.
