'24': And on the seventh day...

Sep 19, 2007, 06:19 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Television

Chloe_l WARNING: Major 24 season 7 plot spoilers follow.

You were right. At least, you were right if you were one of the more conspiratorially-minded 24 fans who noticed, back in season 5, that your beloved Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) didn't get the silent-clock tribute after Christopher Henderson (Peter Weller) jabbed him with a supposedly lethal syringe. Sure enough, 24's producers revealed Wednesday that we should expect to see Tony pop up in the coming season. Other big spoilers: Day 7 will take place in Washington, D.C., with Jack Bauer on trial. Chloe O'Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub, pictured) and Bill Buchanan (James Morrison) will be around, no doubt in support of Jack, but otherwise, Kiefer Sutherland will be surrounded by a largely new cast, including (as previously announced) a fed played by Janeane Garofalo and a president played by Cherry Jones.

Bringing folks back from the dead smacks of desperation to me, though 24's writers do tend to make their characters hard to kill. Besides, after the dismal day 6, the show needs to do whatever it can to mix things up and win back alienated fans. Still, does this news make you more or less eager to tune in to 24 when it returns in January?

ghostboy Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 11:54 AM EST

I don't know why people bother to tell bad thing about the show...there are lots of channel to watch lots of shows and programs, if you don't like 24 change the channel thats it. I still haven't seen a program on TV wich isn't silly, that's what TV's and movies are all about. I hate soap operas I don't critizied it I just don't watch it. I sugest you people do the same

Steve Fri, Oct 26, 2007 at 01:39 PM EST

Imagine if Tony AND Curtis are both alive and both gunning for Jack because of their percieved wrongs that Jack has done them!!

Kyle Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 06:02 PM EST

I forgot to add the fact that although Tony didn't get a silent clock (which I noticed and felt suspicious about as well), even the website put a fat 'DECEASED' across his profile picture. I really would want him to come back, but I just don't see how it's remotely feasible. Jack wouldn't have been misinformed on Almeida's condition for half a day, I just don't buy it.

Kyle Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 05:54 PM EST

to the guy who says "WE TOLD YOU SO" - you're wrong. Sure, they could bring Tony back and I'd love his character again, but if you recall, right before he kills Henderson, Jack says "YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATHS OF DAVID PALMER, TONY ALMEIDA, AND MICHELLE DESSLER... FRIENDS OF MINE."

Now do you suggest that for 12 hours Jack somehow thought Tony was dead? I wanna hear you explain that one. If you say he was misinformed I'm gonna laugh.

Michael Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

Do you remember Bobby form Dallas showing back up in the shower, one of the highest rated shows Dallas had outside3 of Who Shot JR. You better believe 24 will get a boost from Tony coming back. I wish David Palmer could come back, what a strong charactor, but that would be stretching it.

Dr. Schleicher Tue, Sep 25, 2007 at 11:12 AM EST

To all you people who said he was dead. WE TOLD YOU SO. I'm glad the writers realized that the characters last season just sucked. No chemistry. Bringing back Tony is the best thing possible. I'm sure they will come up with a far fetched, but awesome storyline that will get things rolling immediately.

film4future Sun, Sep 23, 2007 at 08:15 PM EST

I wasn't going to watch the new season, but now that I hear Tony is coming back, I will tune in. He's the reason I watched the show.

C Sat, Sep 22, 2007 at 03:34 PM EST

Tony comming back is the only reason I will be watching season 7.

daisy Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 09:31 PM EST

I'm glad sexy Tony is coming back. I'll watch this show till the end, no matter how silly it may get, because I love it like a fat kid loves cake.

Marie49 Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 06:18 PM EST

Thrilled that I was right and that Tony will be back. If the producers really wanted to make my year, they'd find a way to bring Nina back, too ... hey, maybe she didn't really die either? I mean, let's face it people: by now we've all learned that ANYTHING is possible on this show.

Would also like to see Kim come back. In S3 they finally let her grow out of her annoying teeny-bopper phase and we got to meet her as a young, responsible adult. S3 really made me want to see more of Kim.

I've got this silly little fantasy scenario going on in my head where unbeknownst to Jack, Kim has been off training as a CTU field agent. My fantasy scenario includes a set of circumstances that thrust Jack & Kim together as co-workers ... and of course, at some point, Jack is placed in yet another one of those classic Jack Bauer "impossible choice" situations where he needs to place the good of the Country above the welfare of his daughter. I think the Jack/Kim stresses would be awesome.

Elaine Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

So, is Nina dead?

Bring back Sherry Palmer and Curtis!

Yeaaahhh! Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

Tony's back f--- yeah!!! Jack on trial what?

Mina Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 02:29 PM EST

What about President Logan? They never showed his actual death...and left that storyline dangling. Will they ever wrap that one up?

harry Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

I am so happy that Tony will return, and I can't wait to see Jack back in action.

Jeni Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:07 PM EST

I am all for a return of Tony. Killing him off so unceremoniously was what made me give up on 24.

Shelly Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

All I can say it, all is forgiven! I am so ready for this next season. The only thing that will make it better is if Mrs Logan and Aaron Pierce come back. 24 has consistently been the best show on tv since it has been on. So it had a less than stellar year. 24's "bad" year, is still better than most of the other crap on tv.

KateDFW Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 11:24 AM EST

I love Tony and I am very happy to have him back. Sure it sounds far fetched but like Heroes is true life? It is just entertainment people...go with it. But I would have loved this to be a surprise instead of learning about his return now. In S4 when his character shows up to save Jack and Audrey, I was screaming for joy. And it was a surprise. I will watch 24 until it is no longer on the air as it has given me many years of enjoyment. But I do also hope that S7 is as good (or better) than S5 which was the best!

Sarah Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 11:14 AM EST

True fans will tell you that season 6, although not the best was defintely worth watching. For all the stunts and action of this show, its easy to forget the actual meaning of the show. 24 is about this one ordinary guy who wanted to love his family and save the country that he loves. And if bring back Tony makes Jack Bauer happy the whole world should be happy too!! I think with 24 you have to never say never and thats the way this fantastic show should be. Keep up the good work guys and Kiefer, your one cool dude!!

Joe C Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 11:12 AM EST

Anyone who reads the '24' blog here in EW knows what I am going to say: I will tune into '24' to see if Chloe bites the bullet. Take her out, Jack!

Elizabeth Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 11:07 AM EST

Sorry if this was already mentioned, but I was surprised, but then this is the guy who got shot in the neck, slapped a band-aid on, and still came into work. Hope the writers know what they're doing.

graeme Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 11:03 AM EST

This reeks of desperation to me. Listen to the DVD commentary on the episode that Tony dies. Those writers/producers say he's dead.

And if they are going for "let's bring back characters who didn't get the silent clock treatment"...bring back Sherry Palmer. She was always the best thing about the show. She saved season 3 and she could do it again.

Harper47 Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

To be honest - this news about Tony is the ONLY reason I will come back to 24. I had given up on the show after last season but Tony still alive will bring me back.

Peter Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 10:41 AM EST

And Nick, this seasont they are doing a two night - 3 hour premiere...no two hours on the second night.

Peter Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 10:40 AM EST

Look, I don't have time to read every other person's comments (so this might have been said), but there was never any confirmation that Tony was killed. Jack got there, held him for a second, cried, (Never checked his pulse), and ran off...there was never an actual death. Kinda figured he was always alive. Great news. Can't wait to see Jack's reaction.

Nick Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 10:24 AM EST

I also wonder why the producers didn't keep this quiet....it wouldve been perfect for the last scene of the 4th episode (the end of the 2 night premiere)

Kelly Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 10:23 AM EST

I know I'm only one person, but I'm still watching. I couldn't care less about Heroes if I tried. I personally didn't hate season 6. Was it awesome? No, but it's a lot better than most of the junk on TV today (as someone has already said). I LOVE LOVE LOVE Tony and I can't wait to see Carlos Bernard back on my TV screen!! Is it January yet?

Nick Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 10:21 AM EST

Mike in Moncton---i totally agree

Andy...in the 24-verse, a SILENT COUNTDOWN means death! It's a fact. HOW CAN YOU QUESTION THIS. Tony didn't get the silent countdown therefore he is STILL ALIVE. i knew it. i called it from season 5! I AM SO EXCITED. Anyone that thinks its "jumping the shark"...who cares. TWO MORE YEARS and lovin it. The thing about 24 is that even at its worst...its STILL good. Like a bad 80s horror movie. you either LOVE it...or love to hate it. it still rocks. BERNARD IS BACK yesss

Kristi Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 09:51 AM EST

This makes me both happy and sad, i think partly was Day 6 was so dismal is because i didn't like a single supporting cast member other than the ones we already knew. I had no one to root for other than Jack which made the other stories boring. I did love Tony and i was devastated when they did that.

melissa Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 09:50 AM EST

Seems a little soap-opera to me, but Tony's one of my favorite characters so I'll be happy to welcome him back. If they give Tony, Bill and Chloe a bunch of screen time, that's a step in the right direction.

Chaddogg Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 08:46 AM EST

They can bring back Tony, but he better have some sort of debilitating injury/disease. Tony in a wheelchair (i.e. the serum left him paralyzed from the waist down) I could believe.

I'd also like to see Chase return with a hook in place of his chopped off hand.

(I kid, I kid....but seriously, I'm hopeful that this show can return to its pre-season 6 glory. Will President Logan be returning too?)

Catherine Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 08:42 AM EST

If Tony is back, I am still in on 24 no matter what!! I just passed the last couple of years pretending he wasn't dead, so...

Lu Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 08:37 AM EST

I quit this show long ago, and is on the same timeslot as Heroes, so, who's still watching???

Ron Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 08:01 AM EST

Although I would prefer the surprise appearance, this news made my day yesterday. For all we know, if this is about a trial, Tony could be in a flashback or something. Tweak with the 24 formula. Real time with testimony flashbacks or something. Or not.

DawnLD Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 07:55 AM EST

I have to agree with Ceballos on this...Watching Tony suddenly reappear would have been way cooler than knowing about it beforehand. This is one piece of information the producers should have kept to themselves!

Still...looking forward to the new season!

Tony Montana Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 07:43 AM EST

Apparently, the very first scene with Tony will be in the shower after waking up from a bad dream...

jmg Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 06:04 AM EST

I've already invested 6 years into this show; I can't stop now. Besides, there couldn't be any other show on opposite 24 that would be any better.

RedSoxDave Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 02:15 AM EST

"Tony dies in Jack's arms." So sayeth the 24 site on FOX.com -- but then again, we never saw Dina Araz get shot, so maybe she can come back too.

Then maybe we'd find out whatever happened to Behrooz. Or to Charles Logan. And we never actually saw Jack's father die, so maybe James Cromwell escaped from the oil rig on the boat...

Anything is fair game in 24-land.

MikeknaJ Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 01:05 AM EST

I think President Palmer should take a break from selling All State and make a return. What? He's dead on the show? Hmm... maybe if they borrow Hermione's Time Turner they can make it happen...

Ian Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 12:57 AM EST

I figured Tony would be back. I thought he was stabbed with the same thing Jack was stabbed with at the end of Season 4. I thought they were faking Tony's death as well. I don't think Tony is the only character returning. I expect Kim to come back for a couple of episodes. I've been hearing a lot of rumblings about ex-President Keeler as well. It is said that he is still alive. I expect a lot of new characters and returning character in this season.

C C Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 11:02 PM EST

I believe there's going to be a reasonable explanation for Tony's resurrection. The writers "killed" Tony off fully intending to bring him back at some point. Why did they do this?

Tony Almeida never really existed. He was the alias of an agent with a personal connection to Jack. Tony did perish in the med room-but the man who bore that false identity still lives. A huge backstory is coming on why "Tony" took his alias.

Simon Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 09:35 PM EST

I like Tony and am glad he is back. I am looking forward to this season. Still think 24 is a far superior to most of the junk on tv.

Jim Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 09:01 PM EST

bring back chase!

t3hdow Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 08:44 PM EST

I'm with you Ceballos. Normally, I'd avoid this news like the plague and curse everyone's name that revealed this to me, but I need reassurance after the lackluster season 6. And boy, did they nail it big time. Jack on trial? Tony's resurrection from the dead? Holy $hit, do I need to change my pants right now! I'm pondering whether I should call my older brother and tell him or wait until the show airs in January 2008. Both of us were pissed when Tony 'died' in season 5.
Speaking of which, didn't the official 24 site on Fox list him as deceased after Henderson 'killed' Tony?

Ceballos Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 08:27 PM EST

I know I already said what I said, but I just want to add that as exciting as this news is, I'm a little saddened that in this day in age this stuff is all over the Internet and the blogosphere and everyone knows about it and will be expecting it.

Think about it...how awesome would it have been to just have Tony show up in the middle of this season out of nowhere! Then again, I'm betting the producers are maybe trying to drum up some positive buzz for the upcoming year after the letdown that was season, er, day 6.

Andy Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 08:12 PM EST

I'm on the fence with this. A silent clock doesn't signify a death; it's for dramatic tension. So the producers copping Tony's return to, "Oh, we didn't give him the silent clock, so he's still alive, haha, it was our plan all around" sounds lame to me.

On the other hand...TONY! YAY! MY FAVORITE CHARACTER! As long as they make his return plausible (for the 24 universe, at least) and make season 7 better than season 6, then I'll be okay.

MikeknaJ Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 08:06 PM EST

More!!

MaryUtah Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 07:44 PM EST

Last season wasn't the best season, but any season of 24 is better than most TV! Tony! I would love to see him back with Jack - woo hoo!

T.E. Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 07:33 PM EST

More eager...Tony rocks! I was hoping for this last season.

The last season was pretty bad...this one needs to re-establish the series.

Emily Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 07:20 PM EST

Tony's one of only a handful of characters on the show I've actually like, so I'm happy he's back.

Mike in Moncton Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 07:08 PM EST

I don't think it's desperation at all. I didn't think Tony was dead all this time. It'd be different if he flatlined or something, or if he got the silent clock.

dbo Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 06:53 PM EST

Jack on trial?! washington DC?! Tony back?! could this be the biggest come back on tv history cause.. correct me if im wrong no show gets better after a really bad season... expect for the first 2 years of seinfield and they werent even bad.

Laura Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 06:45 PM EST

I was angry with the writers when they got rid of Michelle and Tony, because they were my favorite characters (other than Jack, of course.) At least I will get half of my wish that they had not killed off my favorite couple. I don't give a crap about "jumping the shark" - nothing gets my heart pounding more than watching an episode of "24"!

Jon Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 06:32 PM EST

makes me ashamed that i was a 24 fan

Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 05:46 PM EST

Thank goodness! I knew he'd be back one day. Tony was always my favorite character. He brought a real humanity to 24. Jack Bauer almost seemed unhuman without him... Jack survived every season while being a badass, but for awhile, Tony did as well, which made the show seem realistic, and made Jack not look so superhuman or unreal. I was devastated when Tony "died," and I am ecstatic to hear about his return. It'll be awesome to see his familiar face next season!

Matt Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 05:46 PM EST

24 jumps the shark every season. And I have to agree, Gary. Day 6 was pretty idiotic. After the first four episodes, the only episode that came close to matching that intensity was episode 10pm-11pm where Jack went toe-to-toe with Fayed. Of course, the writers could really maximize the suspense if Fox didn't announce a Kiefer Sutherland contract extension every season.

Ceballos Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 05:39 PM EST

As silly as this show is I love it and I don't really agree with the idea that it is jumping the shark with this move (I mean, there have been far more ludicrous things on this show like the cougar Daniel brought up).

Also, as much fun as I personally made of people who insisted Tony Almeida was still alive, I'll be glad to see Carlos Bernard bring the character back to the show seeing as how many characters audiences have affection for (Curtis, Edgar) have been rubbed out the past few years.

Daniel Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 05:26 PM EST

Whatever. This show jumped the shark years ago. (Hi Cougar subplot!)
