The PopWatch Confessional (Vol. 24)

Jul 19, 2007, 02:27 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: PopWatch Confessional

Cube_l What does your pop-culture cubicle decor say about you? Here's why I'm asking: I recently got a new cube mate, Fred. The day he started, I was on vacation. The day I came back and met him, he told me he'd already checked out all my memorabilia. Not good. Suddenly I wished I'd thought of putting Post-It notes on select "pieces" before I left explaining their origins. For instance:

• I only have these two copies of the Showgirls V.I.P. Edition because I reviewed it.
• These authentic "Thanks for last night" autographs from Ryan Seacrest (close-up after the jump), Dave Coulier, and Coolio (the latter which says, "Thanx 4 last night & yesterday & the day B4. It was good!") were given to me by friends as gifts. (I'd started the now-extensive collection in 1998, when I went to a Jon Stewart book signing and he didn't know what to write inside.)
• Speaking of books, I appreciate the absurd title and cover shot of How do I love thee kitty? — not cats.
• I really am busy. It's just that I make time to put my face over Renee Zellweger's on a Down with Love cut-out doll so that I can be with Ewan McGregor, and to craft Tom Cruise and Daniel Radcliffe stick puppets. (Special shout-out to frequent PopWatch commenter furry_tom, who knows where I'm coming from.)

Cube2_l • See, David Hasselhoff looks so happy in the photo I have of him on a tire swing that it makes me happy.
• I really want to put this stuffed animal dog on the giveaway table, but I feel guilty. I will never, however, get rid of this stuffed cat, a promotional item from the movie Cats & Dogs, because it reminds me of my former cubemate, Gilbert Cruz. He briefly inherited its name, Mr. Tinkles.
• That jar of clear liquid may or may not be moonshine. I wouldn't open it, just in case.

Your turn.

kats: yes, our collections will be photo worthy. Then we can submit our photos to EW for the Obsessive Fan section. (Us? Obsessive??? Naaahhhh!) I suggest we start making our stick puppets in the meantime.

kats Sat, Jul 21, 2007 at 07:22 AM EST

Sarah~ We'll start a collection of Orlando and Daniel and our DOLL membership materials! We'll have the most original collections going!

evie Sat, Jul 21, 2007 at 01:38 AM EST

I have a Wendy the Snapple Lady bobblehead in my cube. Her sun hat is chipped because she fell off my shelf a couple of times.

Sarah Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 04:28 PM EST

kats: I can't wait until we can have our Orlando Bloom autographed Playbills and DOLL signs hanging above our computers! Now THAT will be a happy day for us!

MIMI Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 03:41 PM EST

-an earpiece from Shrek (from a box of Apple Jacks) that allow you to "see" into the future...it's a light that looks like a blue-tooth earpiece
-a light-up Star Wars spoon (from a box of Sugar Corn Pops)...I've always said the one of the best things about being an adult is buying cereal for the toy without having to actually eat said cereal
-a Magic 8-Ball pen
-a "Lite Brite" pen, that has colored pegs and lights up
-various rubber duckies inherited from the person who last had this desk, not sure why he had them though
-pictures of me and 3 co-workers with Taylor Hicks and Ace from last season's American Idol (we went to a taping and somehow wound up backstage)
-various happy meal toys which keep disappearing and then reappearing....I think people play with them and return them
-a Harry Potter book countdown calendar and wand

me! Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 12:37 PM EST

hmmm, i just started a new job with an empty slate of a cube and have been wondering the same thing! i've got my brandon and dylan 90210 postcard as their sauve smirks just make my day, my Er (aqua teen hunger force) cut-out from the boston promotional scare (my office is in boston!) and a teen age mutant ninja turtles cartoon faxed to my by my BF to cheer me up. i'm just hoping i don't geek anyone out that i'm working with!

Rani Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

Mandi,
As a med student, seeing your cubicle makes me think about switching careers!

Bruce in NC Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

Not too much. A clipping of a picture of Hobbes (from Calvin and Hobbes) with paws in front of him and the caption below him say "There are eight rules of Fight Club."

A Butters (from South Park) foam character piece about two inches tall. A Cartman character that was part of a keychain. And a 5 inch Gossamer figure (AKA Monster from Looney Tunes)that I got from a WB store way back when.

Also a Schrute Buck.

Fire Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

Unfortunately I work in an environment where I have to keep the pop culture stuff to a minimum but I've snuck in a few things:

I've got this hideous blue crane-ish thing that's got multi-colored polka dots all over it and a head and neck that's actually a pen. What can I say, Mom gave it to me. It's semi-hidden behind the monitor.
There's a stuffed pig with a pink origami samuri helmet on one of my computers. I don't know where the pig came from, he's been migrating desks in my office for years, but the helmet was all me.
A laminated poster someone made for me of my 'favorite world leader' former Japanese President Junichiro Koizumi. All I can say is that I have a very strange office.
A coffee mug covered in Shakespearian insults, which I use on occasion
And my prize possession (Of the ones I've got at work anyway) is my Robin, from Teen Titans, paperweight.
I want to bring in my Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail someday too...

JillS Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 09:41 AM EST

-Napoleon Dynamite Post-Its
-Burger King "King" bobble head
-Jar of Jelly Bellys

kats Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 09:25 AM EST

Hey Sarah! Once we Bring Orlando Bloom To Broadway, we'll be able to add our signed playbills and personal photos!!!

Elaine Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 08:50 AM EST

I forgot that I used to have a picture of Martha Stewart, Michael Jackson, and Saddam in the prison bakery with Martha showing them how to bake.

Really evil and kinda funny. They had chef's hats.

t-fal Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 08:15 AM EST

A sign "Who has two thumbs & doesn't give a crap" (scrubs). I love to point to it, shout my name and say "I thought we met?". A Shrek happy meal toy - he burps AND yells I'm an Ogre! doesn't get much better than that. A stuffed elephant that yells "I work for peanuts!". A subway happy meal toy that plays Genie in a Bottle. oh, and a Funshine Care Bear bobble head pen. clearly, I like cubicle decor that makes noise.

Leah Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 06:46 AM EST

My boyfriend's office is accessorized with 5 movie edition Mr. Potato Heads - Darth Tater, Artoo Potatoo and Spud Trooper from Star Wars, Spidey Spud and Optimash Prime. Seperated into good vs evil, of course, lest they co-mingle and start some sort of intergalactic battle for the fate of all mankind in his office.

Tianne Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 07:59 PM EST

Amongst all my kids' pictures and their "art", I have a "Wolf Blitzer" desert storm trading card my husband made me pinned to my cube wall. In honor of the best movie ever, Garden State. People ask why I have a pic of Wolf Blitzer, but similar to having to explain a joke, if you have to explain it, it isn't very funny. For those who know what it means, it creates an instant bond.

Jess Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 07:27 PM EST

I'm a full-time mom, so my van is my office. On the front bumper is my Pirates of the Caribbean license plate from Disney World. On the back, I have a license plate frame that says, "I'd rather be stranded on an island with Jack Sparrow". And I have a Stitch decal back there too, to accompany my Stitch and Sorcerer Mickey Mouse key chains. I also have a lovely Phantom of the Opera keychain I bought after seeing the show a few years back. Ah, happy memories!

Galadriel Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 07:23 PM EST

Is it wrong that I laminated this week's EW Harry Potter cover and am staring at it right now? At least the lamination makes it drool-proof ;-)

Valerie Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 07:20 PM EST

I have a sparkling and very purple bumper sticker that says "You say I'm a Bithch like it's a Bad Thing!". I bought it to stick on the side of my computer, but I got scared that my coworkers wouldn't get the irony...

Melissa Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 07:13 PM EST

As I've gotten older and an actual office with walls they won't let me put tape on (I had to get these 3M sticky board things), I've whittled down my stuff. But I do have a couple of movie postcards on my wall: one for Chungking Express, the best movie ever made, and one of Dirk Diggler and Reed Rothchild dancing from Boogie Nights. I also have a Han Solo wind-up happy meal toy a coworker gave me. Not too long after I got it, an older woman I work with was in my office and saw Han on top of my monitor and asked me if it was John Kerry. I wanted to tell her, "yes, it's from the 2004 Election Happy Meal set, but she's sweet, I couldn't be snarky to her so I told her the truth. I don't think she has a clue who Han Solo is.

Miriam Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 06:01 PM EST

Oh, this totally accentuates my geekness. I've got:
- David Tennant Doctor Who computer screen desktop
- Vote Saxon Poster (another DW)
- a TPS Report cover sheet from Inatech
- a "motivator" poster about BSG and how we don't get why Lee ever liked Dualla
- 4 of my favourite days off my 365 days of pop culture VH1 calendar

Anjeliki Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 06:00 PM EST

Now, ask me about my living room and dining room - veritable pop culture gold mines. The office? Not so much.

I have about 20 incarnations of Betty Boop (people won't stop giving her to me) all over the desk, some beanie babies and various stress balls, Dilbert "Alice" slammer, and multiple items with my university logo (including a bobblehead). My favorite, though, is the pig holding a sign that says, "I would give up chocolate, but I'm no quitter." Because I'm not.

nm Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 05:53 PM EST

Wow, Mandi. You sound like such a cutie! I think I'm in love.

MissJC Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 04:50 PM EST

I'm a teacher too, so these are on my desk:
Laptop Desktop: Varies. Either Daniel Radcliffe (as Harry) or David Tennant (as the Doctor).
Pictures: All of the HP characters, David Tennant, me with members of the band "Creed" yeah, I was a Creed Fan.
Action Figures: Uhm, I'll admit I have a David Tennant 'Doctor' action figure
Other 'stuff': Happy Bunny posters, mouse pads, postcards, flags, tons of Elmo dolls, pictures and stickers, Anything Garfield.
Wow. How old am I?

Amanda Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 04:47 PM EST

You have nothing to be ashamed of, Mandi. That autographed Ryan Seacrest headshot is insanely cool. No joke.

Andie Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 04:45 PM EST

I only have one family photo on my desk...and it's of The Simpsons.

Deluxx Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 04:44 PM EST

Pop culture detritus only:
- The 8x10 glossy promotional shot from the Love Boat, autographed by Ted Lange (Isaac the bartender!)
- The Office talking keychain ("This is an environment of welcoming, and... you should just get the hell out of here.")
- Horror Movie Victim figurines, which get posed in fear of various items; the current thing they run from is
- an 8x10 glossy of Joanie and Chachi
(okay, I have a rotating collection of these, also including Charlie's Angels, Brady Bunch, Partridge Family and Mork & Mindy, but I don't display them all at once; only the Love Boat one has permanent residence)
- a photo of me with Bobby Flay, both of us bombed out of our gourds (which, appropriately, has fallen off its wall space and drifted under the desk somewhere).
Mandi, I *might* have to steal the stick puppet idea. I hope you'll see it as an homage.

Annabelle Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 04:38 PM EST

I'm a history teacher, so I don't have a cubicle, but I do have a desk and shelves covered with a Dwight Schrute bobblehead and a bunch of Simpsons actions figures (including Miss Hoover and Mrs. Krabbappel). I also have action figures of Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Robert E Lee, and Ulysses S Grant. They were the pop culture icons of the 1700 and 1800s.

Kat Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

My pop culture decor in my office includes:
-a dronkey - you know, the offspring of Donkey and Dragon from Shrek. He is absolutely adorable.
-a Boston Red Sox Mr. Potato Head
-a Captain Morgan bead that I once caught at a Mardi Gras Parade
an actual gumball machine
-two printouts of Peeps dioramas featured in the Washington Post and highlighted right here on Popwatch
-papers from a previous desk calendar of misheard song lyrics from "Excuse me While I Kiss this Guy"

elly Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 04:35 PM EST

One year, while working as a summer student, I decorated my cube with a picture of a cat dressed up as Indiana Jones that I bought for a single Canadian dollar at a dollar store. I thought it was hilarious - seriously, the cat had a bullwhip and everything - but I had to deal with one too many co-workers cooing over how adorable, how cute, how precious it was. I hope some of them were being ironic, but I doubt it.

Sarah Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 04:27 PM EST

I work at home as a lowly factchecker, so the only things I have at my desk to cheer me up are my Johnny Depp/Orlando Bloom (BRING ORLANDO TO BROADWAY!!! Hi, kats!) Pirates of the Caribbean 3-ring binder to put my papers in, my At World's End calendar, my Lord of the Rings calendar, and various LOTR and Pirates posters and pins. I'm not an obsessive fan with a problem. Really. I'm NOT!

Jess Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 04:18 PM EST

AccountantGirl: I HAVE to see a photo of your Bert & Ernie picture!

Kathleen Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 04:04 PM EST

Snooks - I still think you're the bee's knees for having that!

I'm pretty tame. I have a Buddy Christ, and Undertaker sports bottle (tho' I don't watch rasslin'. Seriously, I don't), a Peter Griffin magnet holding up an Animaniacs trading card, a picture of the Velvet Underground and Maynard James Keenan (not together, though. How awesome would that be?!!?), random Peanuts stuff, a postcard of Sirius Black's wanted poster (and people always ask me if it's Charles Manson), but the best . . . my two Burger King bobbleheads. I got them in kids' meals . . . and they creep the bejeebus out of my coworkers.

AccountantGirl Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:59 PM EST

I have two bits of pop culture at my desk. One is a plush toy Spongebob Squarepants that my office got through a Best Buy promotion (someone explain that to me). The other is a ripped magazine page feature Stephen Colbert on stilts that my friend gave me 'cause she knows I'm obsessed with the man. Oh, and I also have a Bert and Ernie "Brokeback Mountain" picture. Hilarious.

Snooks Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:54 PM EST

*Ummm, many pictures of friends/loved ones.
*Random and relatable quotes I've picked up (many on scraps of paper).
*An autographed headshot of Andrew Dan-Jumbo (I actually had to meet him for my job) and he put the word "pleasure" in all caps on it...hmmm...
*My prized framed 8x10 of Guns N Roses autographed by all of the band members with a drumstick from the drummer (in 8th grade I thought I was the bees knees for receiving this).
*my foam Statue of Liberty crown (you never know when it may come in handy)
*a Winnie the Pooh coffee mug that makes me laugh as they are ice skating and Tigger is gripping Pooh's head
*many other papers that I must weed through
*oh, my meet & greet pass from Gretchen Wilson - it fell off the inside of my coat one day, I stuck it up on my bulletin board and it has never left.

Brie Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

This is where working at a TV station comes in handy and having weird 3/4 height walls- I have posters from Dancing with the Stars (3 incarnations), Desperate Housewives (2 incarnations), Superbowl XL, Scrubs, Friends Finale, Seinfeld, Grey's Anatomy- and that cool Oscar poster with all the quotes. I've got Sherman and Peabody wind up toys, a Dwight Schrute Bobblehead- with a schrute buck and stanley nickel, a John O'Hurley bobblehead from Family Feud, Mulan and Lion King toys, a "Honk if you Hate Chris" bumper sticker. Plus, various pictures from How I Met Your Mother, the Office and Arrested Development under the glass top on my desk. Plus- I have a Bushism's daily calendar and I've tacked up all my favorite ones- My person favorite- "Just remember- it's the birds that's supposed to suffer, not the hunter." This was, of course, said before Dick Cheney's quail hunting trip.

Surprisingly, my area is kept quite clean- my walls are just covered.

Robert Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

I have a cubifice (locking door, but doesn't go straight to the ceiling) and I have a ton of pop culture stuff. Whole collection of Marvel Legends action figures (Wolverine, Cyclops, Colossus, Angel, Apocalypse & a Sentinel), a Dwight K. Schrute bobblehead, a Lost calendar, a Mr. Pink (aka Steve Buscemi) action figure, a Lollapalooza poster from 2006, a New Pornographers postcard, a Hellboy action figure, and various other little things hanging around the wall. And yes, I'm well aware of how geeky this all makes me sound.

Heather Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:49 PM EST

The tons of other stuff aside, here are my pop culture related items:
- A Dwight Schrute bobblehead doll
- Color printouts of the Schrutebuck, Stanley nickel, Pam penny, Jim dime, and Angela gold dollar
- Pictures of John Krasinski and Jake Gyllenhaal (because they're pretty)

K Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

I have a large poster of Michael Buble in my cube. You'd be stunned at how many people ask if he's my boyfriend. (I'm 26 and most of the people in my office are 40+) Sometimes I say yes.

Abby Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:45 PM EST

Oh, and my desktop says "Harry Potter and the Desktop of Wonders" and features a countdown clock that will hit ONE tomorrow!!

Abby Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:41 PM EST

I have a rather small office, but on the walls are framed posters from "Chicago" and "Moulin Rouge," but my pride and joy is on the shelf: The Runaway Bride Bobblehead Doll (not from the movie - the actual runaway bride from Duluth, GA).

Galadriel Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:38 PM EST

Tim, you just reminded me to hang my map of Middle-earth in my office! Thank you!

kats Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:38 PM EST

Unfortunately, I have no cubicle and I share an office with my boss in his guest house (personal assistant am I). But, if I were allowed to decorate I would have to have:

Duran Duran early/mid 80's poster(s)
Magic 8 Ball
Storm Trooper Action Figure (actually belongs to my husband...)
EPCOT ball on stand
Stuffed "Florida" palm tree (from when I used to live there)
Polaroid picture of me taken with cardboard Harry Potter the night of the release of "Order of the Phoenix"

Wow! If I ever get an office I think I may need some more stuff...

Tim Lade Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

Oh and I forgot!

A plaque I pilfered from the movie theatre I worked at when I was 18 that says This Theatre is Equipped with SDDS: Sony Dynamic Digital Sound

and my prized possession of a slate from Universal Studios which frankly gets randomly used to call action on porn movies for some reason.

Jess Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

daisyj: Thank you! That's an awesome web site! I'm afraid you've opened a total Pandora's Box by showing me that web site, tho. My desk (and credit card) are now quivering with fear!

daisyj Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:34 PM EST

Jess: I actually got mine as a table favor at this year's Edgar Awards (literary award for mystery novels; I wasn't nominated but a friend was), but you can also get them from Archie McPhee (http://www.mcphee.com/items/11470.html), along with all of your other monkey/pirate/meat needs.

Tim Lade Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:33 PM EST

Oh where to begin. My office is pretty stuffed full of stuff. The walls are almost completely covered with movie posters and the like. The current list includes:

- 2 door posters of Commander Riker and Lieutenant Worf,
- ones sheets of Batman Begins, Amelie, The Bourne Ultimatum, Children of Men (teaser one sheet),
- a giant map of middle earth, a 24 Jack Bauer poster,
- a mini-sized version of the new JJ Abrahms Star Trek one sheet,
- a cartoon version of my universities campus map
- a vintage poster that says is your bathroom breeding bolsheviks.
- a Star Trek Ships of the Line 2007 calendar
- A model of the Back To the Future 2 Delorean (they are different depending on the movie!)
- A model of the Enterprise-D
- A mini space shuttle I picked up at the Smithosian in D.C.
- A Captain Picard action figure
- A film canister with all my ticket stubs from when I moved to start my new job
- A green light thingy that is hard to describe and that's just my office!

Martha Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:30 PM EST

I'm obviously not the pop culture goddess I thought I was, because all that's on my desk (besides work equipment and files) is a lamp, a Chinese paper cut-out of a rabbit from my cousin's wedding, and a picture of me and Mr. Martha from 1992. Pathetic, I know. Somehow my obsession with entertainment doesn't seem to take physical form...unlike Mandi and furry_tom with their awesome stick puppets!

lynny Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:28 PM EST

I have a postcard with Animal from the Muppets that says Rock! on it.

lynny Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:28 PM EST

I have a postcard with Animal from the Muppets that says Rock! on it.

Sarah Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:27 PM EST

Jessica: ooooo, you HAVE to find out where your Norrington came from... I MUST HAVE ONE! If I worked with you, your Norrington could swordfight with my Will Turner and Jack Sparrow action figures (with slashing thrust action... sounds kinky!)

Elaine Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:25 PM EST

The reprinted edition of the final "Far Side" desk calendar, several pages of this stuck to my bulletin board, a monkey that makes very obnoxious loud noises when you throw him at stuff, Robert Frost's poem, "The Road Not Taken", and several pictures of friends, family, and my pets. I am planning on replacing my stapler soon with a red Swingline so I can go around quoting Milton.

I want a Schrute buck! I am considering the Optimus Prime Potato Head.

Galadriel Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:25 PM EST

Two Gollum action figures, one of which hisses and sings, a Gollum snowglobe (very classy!), a Gandalf action figure (does battle with the Gollum figures when not in obscene poses with Gollum thanks to my gutter-minded co-workers), and a Monty Python and The Holy Grail plaque (best birthday present EVER!)

Jessica Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:22 PM EST

Commodore Norrington Action Figure. Best. Birthday. Gift. Ever. And so hard to find.

Katie Kruger Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

Pearls before Swine comics, Carson Ellis drawings (pilfered from the internets), and an Abbey road message board all proclaim that I am the coolest person in the office

Jess Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

daisyj: Where'd you get your Allen Poe bobblehead? I love to have one of those!

Lainey Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:11 PM EST

I've got a Lumberg postcard "Um, yeah...I'm gonna need you to come in this weekend.", a picture of Yoda, random quotes from The Office, a Mr. Bean magnet, an Office calendar (currently on a Pam and Jim page), endlessy rotating pop culture images as my desktop wallpaper, a voodoo doll (so no one messes with me) and a list with all the songs I want to download after hearing them on Pandora. I would have my Darth Tatter Mr. Potatoe Head but I've got nowhere to put it.

lilly Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

I have several "Pearls before Swine" comic strips posted about. That strip is just laugh out loud funny. Also my favorite Dwight quote is posted right to my monitor
"I never smile if I can help it. Showing one's teeth is a submission signal in primates. When someone smiles at me all I see is a chimpanzee begging for its life."-Dwight Schrute
PS
Where can I get a Schrute buck?? I would love to have one!

Heather Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

My desk includes: a framed photo of Sting (it never gets old when people think he's my husband), a moose that does a split, a NASCAR pez dispenser, Superman, Batman and Tigger. Plus my note pad that says "Chick With Brains".

furry_tom Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

Thanks for the shout-out!
You can see my Mr. T and Timothy Treadwell pictures in the background of the slideshow, but I also have an Arrested Development background on my computer desktop, an ugly drawing of a squirrel surrounded by a bunch of movie quotes*, and the poem "Slough" tacked up on my corkboard, which some people may have seen read by David Brent on The (British) Office.

*It started with "You go in the cage. Cage goes in the water. You go in the water. Shark's in the water. Our shark." and expanded from there.

Working Girl Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 02:34 PM EST

I, too, have a Schrute Buck. But the item that gets the most attention is a wedding photo of a grinning Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fulaau taped to my phone, right next to the caller ID. Reactions tend to start out, "aw, who's that?" followed by, "um, isn't that...?" Then usually a bewildered "oh, god - um, why?"
not one cube visitor thus far has seemed to get the same joy i do from seeing those two crazy kids finally tie the knot.

cdrivanova Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 02:33 PM EST

Let's see ... I have a blow-up Stewie doll, a Stewie USB figurine that moves/talks when I use certain key combos on my computer, a Bob's Big Boy bank, Dr. Evil and Austin Powers pull-string/talky figures, an Albert Einstein action figure, Jean-Luc Picard action figure, and a "Boss Toss" gun-thingy that my boss gave me to use whenever she gives me crappy work to do :-) Oh, I also have a "gold"-plated Slinky displayed on wood-like display thingy (it's an "executive Slinky desk set") and a Magic 8-ball ...

Mandi, I agree with what people write here: you have the BEST BLOGS!!

meg Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 02:31 PM EST

Wind up Nunzilla, Blossom from the Powerpuff Girls figure, Homer & Ralph figures as well as Simpsons travel mug that is holiday theme (bridging my love of the Simpsons and Christmas into one awesome piece of tacky crap), tiny plastic E.T. figure that my husband drew a combover on, stickers from Kid Robot, a Librarian action figure (with Shushing Action) and a picture I took of the T-Rex in Cabazon, CA that I believe was featured in Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Au revior Pee Wee!!

Court Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 02:30 PM EST

I'm a librarian and I used to have a life-size Legolas standee in my office, until it fell over and half his head fell off. That was a major conversation piece.

Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

matt: no bobblehead?!

Rebecca Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 02:25 PM EST

I work for Coke, so I have a lot of Coke memorbilia on my shelf - various promo bottles, a Coke Frizbee, etc.. But becuase I am a geek I also have a Frodo doll, a Yoda wind-up toy, a postcard of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford from 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?', and a photo of me and Orlando Bloom. That last one is sometimes the only thing to get me through the day.

I have some anime cels (one Lodoss War, an Escaflowne movie one and a couple of Silent Mobius ones...my really good cels remain at home)hanging up. I also have an Escaflowne toy model with small figures of Van and Hitomi sitting on my desk next to a pewter figure of Katsumi from Silent Mobius. There's also a few Star Wars figures sitting on my desk and Darth Tater. Also on the wall is a signed piece of art depicting Aerith, Celes, and Garnet from the Final Fantasy games that I picked up at an anime con.

I have my skeleton keychain with pink "jewels" that i received a looong time ago when i joined the Stephen King library. Well, let's see. There are my Star Wars stamps, my photo of Mrs. Sato on the Vespa in front of the US Capital, the Venture Brothers logo taken from volume 2 of their dvds, more my cokerewards caps than you can shake a stick at, and a kid robot toy on my desk next to the robot styled paper holder.

Aside from all that, the desk is a big messy pile of papers, as well as notes scribbled on that mention bands who's mp3s I'll someday download (like the Busters who sing "sharp dressed girl").

Most of my desk junk is travel related (glitter snoglobes from New York and the Hoover Dam, a tacky shell-thing from Key West, a puppet from Bali). My only real pop-culture things are an Edgar Allen Poe bobblehead, an Edward Gorey page-a-day calendar and a statuette of Reggie Jackson in his A's uniform. Because, I may like my odd, gothic art and liturature, but I love my A's.

p.s. Very cool pics, f_t! Didn't see those before.

i have a george huff button (american idol season 3) on my tackboard, along with a goonies button, and a family guy/stewie button that says "What the Deuce are you staring at?" on it.

I also have few Dilberts taped around! My screen saver is a quote from Ferris Bueller mvoing around. I have a SpongeBob and Patrick stres ball. I keep the real good stuff home since no one understand my love for the pop culture at work...

Matt Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 02:04 PM EST

I have a "Schrute Buck" given to me by a co-worker and quotes from "The Office" hanging up in my office.

Mandi, you are by far my FAVORITE writer at EW! Your blogs are the BEST! If I were in the cubicle next to you, we'd probably be having Down With Love doll wars b/c I too want to be next to Ewan! (If you need a factchecker, I'm your gal!) BTW, I miss furry_tom's dolls... haven't seen one since his saucy leather-vested Daniel Radcliffe creation. My office is littered with LOTR Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom posters, action figures, and calendars. My current desktop is the latest Pirates of the Caribbean, as is my screensaver. And I have an embarrassing amount of beanie babies inhabiting my desk surface. If they start making Pirate ones, I'm in big trouble!

That picture of Rick James sitting low in a chair with fringe on his crotch and jheri curl gleaming is to honor his memory (um...yeah, that's why it's on my wall). And no, Boyfriend, I will not take down that picture of Stringer Bell (Idris Elba). They should have never killed him off of the Wire!!!

Having recently started an office job, I personally have nothing "cool" as of yet... but my husband has an authentic Swingline red stapler.

Frances Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 01:52 PM EST

I have a section of my corkboard dedicated to the Dilbert comic strips that I find hilarious (I update it all the time). Recently, I added a bug picture of Optimus Prime since I am a huge fan (and the movie rocked!!). Depending on the movie or band I'm into at the moment, I'll have a picture of it on my desktop. Recently it was Linkin Park, now it's Transformers. By next week, I'm sure it will be the Simpspons!

Christa Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

I have my Buffy the Vampire Slayer Calendar above my desk, a rubber ducky named Marvin, and a Dilbert comic about thinking of other people as noisy furniture. ("Hey, a talking ottoman!")

Cece Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 01:41 PM EST

At my last job, I used to put funny quotes up in my cubicle. My favorite, of course, is a Bushism.

"And so, in my State of the—my State of the Union—or state—my speech to the nation, whatever you want to call it, speech to the nation—I asked Americans to give 4,000 years—4,000 hours over the next—the rest of your life—of service to America. That's what I asked—4,000 hours."

Lesha Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 01:38 PM EST

I have a Spongebob Square pants 12 inch doll I won at Rye Playland years back (I'm almost 30, tres triste indeed!), a Dogbert plush doll, several Dilbert cartoon strips( I'm semi afraid to put up my "Must Control Fist of Death" or "Wand of Stupidity" strip). I had a picture of the Hoff, but it was giving me hives so I gave it to my neighbour ( more like pasted it on the wall in his cube when he was out on vacation).

T Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 01:30 PM EST

I have a drawing of David Hasselhoff driving a race car that says "Here's to a slice of heaven in '87 Love Always, David Hasselhoff" Really. Not much more to say.
