Do we really need a 'Sex and the City' movie?

Jul 5, 2007, 05:06 PM | by Bethonie Butler

Categories: 'Sex and the City', Deals, Film, To Care or Not to Care

Sjp_l Now that each of the four leading ladies has signed on to the project, the long-anticipated Sex and the City flick is finally out of development limbo. And so, in true Carrie Bradshaw fashion (minus the Blahniks), we at PopWatch couldn't help but wonder: do we really need a SATC movie?

I guess now would be a good time to mention that I own several SATC DVDs, and while I don’t watch them daily, let’s just say that they’re not exactly collecting dust. I loved the series (I even had one of those ubiquitous "I'm a Carrie" T-shirts — a purchase that, you’ll be happy to know, is collecting dust these days).

But fan status aside, I feel I may be experiencing what Carrie felt when she was torn between Mr. Big and Aidan. On one hand, you have the prospect of a really great, drama-filled movie that brings you back to your love affair with four New York women who showed us that love is tricky, but totally worth fighting for.

On the other, we have the prospect of moving on. We'll always treasure what we had with SATC, but there comes a time when you have to let go. That doesn't mean we let go of the lessons we’ve learned. (Just to refresh: Don’t wear brand new Louboutins to the maternity ward, post-it notes are not acceptable channels for break-up conversations, and when you fall flat on your face, you get up, strut down the runway like nothing happened, and high-five Heidi Klum.)

PopWatch editor Gary Susman says he’d prefer to move on, having gotten the closure he needed from the 2004 series finale, given all that was resolved after our American girl went to Paris. He worries that a movie version will be like that superfluous Bridget Jones sequel, times four, bringing in new complications to ruin each woman's happily-ever-after, only to have them all tidily resolved again in 90 minutes.

Me? I’m shamefully tempted to run back into Mr. Big's arms (or at least hold his hand in the theater, while watching SATC: The Movie). I say this realizing that I’ll be opening a door that has been closed for years and that everything could come unraveling in and hour and a half. But I’ll take my chances....

... of course, if Chris Noth doesn’t reprise his role as Mr. Big I want nothing to do with it. There’s only one Mr. Big and his name may be John, but it's really Chris Noth. I want my Mr. Big!

Guess "I'm a Carrie" after all.

How about you, PopWatchers? Ready to walk another mile in Carrie's expensive stilettos? What do you think should happen in the movie? Or do you just wish Sarah Jessica Parker (pictured) and company would leave well enough alone

brea Fri, May 30, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

the entire premise of this show/movie is about 4 women who can't seem to be happy for very long. these women are NOT role models. it is NOT a wonderful story about living your life as a woman and finding yourself. these women are all in there 30's+ and seem to revisit the same circle of problems (therapy anyone?). for those that think Sex and the City objectifys men, it doesn't. it makes women look like unsatisfied, unsure, confused human beings and whenever there is a personal victory, it is short lived. if the main message behind Sex and the City is, life is unpredictable, we got it after the first season. keep in mind that the show and the movie are both directed by men as well as most of the writing. boycott this movie.

p.s.- i actually saw a bumper sticker that read "w.w.c.d?" What Would Carrie Do? -so sad.

I am absolutely torn on this. Im a huge fan that owns the collector's DVD set and watch it constantly. I have to say that of all the "great" TV shows of our time, Sex and the City had one of the most flawless endings. We all remember how Seinfield blew its series finale, and how FRIENDS held on for one season too long... As much as I could watch SATC forever, they ended it on a perfect note. We all saw how far their characters had come from the very beginning (I think the best being that Miranda FINALLY figured out how to love someone and not push people away, and samantha actually fell in love with a man for more than just sex and was there for her through cancer) and we were able to see where their stories were going and it kind of left it up to our imaginations. Thats why I am scared about this movie! Why dig up such a flawless ending and shake things up?? Im hoping that the 4 girls only agreed to it because they liked the script. I think a prequel would be WAY better!

Kim Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 08:14 PM EST

This is to the man "ED" who wrote this cimment below. You are a guy, there is no way that you can say women do not relate to thses caharacters. The reason why the show was and still is such a hit is because of the fact that this tv show showed every perspective on how women perseive life and men, and atleast I know me and alot of women that i know can compleatly rekate tot hese charcters..

Ed Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 12:02 AM EST

No way. The show was good, but it wasn't great, and I think it is becoming dated. Let's be honest, these women weren't that relatable to the everyday woman (or person for that matter).

Sara Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 11:39 PM EST

Of Course we need a Movie, and those women will be excellent and still Rock SATC. For all those who say it wasnt even a relatable television program to the everyday women, you are probably unattractive and or boring and natuarally wouldn't have a connection to the lives and attention that beautuful, Fabulous ,everyday buisness women have.

whol Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 09:58 PM EST

bah....they'll probably have Samantha die and Big and Carrie struggle with wedding plans or something. Yuck. Leave it be...leave it be.

nay-lo Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

I loved SATC - became a fan once I got my own apt after college and had HBO. I own all the DVDs (and hate watching the censored reruns on TBS and noticing things they've cut - UGH). I think, although the flashy NYC lifestyle doesn't always ring true for the average woman, the relationships these women had with men and each other were so true to life. They were each unique individuals and had unique relationships that anyone could relate to. I would love to see a movie. I'm a little scared of how my ideas of how things ended up with the girls will change - but if its anything like the show, the movie will hit home, make me laugh and make me cry.

johnny utah Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

Could not agree more buddy!! Hopefully Kim Catrell gets in a catfight with the rest of the chicks and this thing does not get made!

jph Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

Can't wait for the movie. Watching women in the mid-forties trying to act like 30-something hipsters will be hysterical. They are all way too long in the tooth to pull off the SATC that you all love and remeber. It will just be sad.

San Diego, CA Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 11:53 AM EST

I loved SATC and also watch my DVDs from time to time, and I say let it rest in peace. Everything was so tidily wrapped up with a nice red bow at the end -- why ruin it? I prefer to think of 'em all living happily ever after.

Ahleese Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 11:24 AM EST

I also agree that the series ended so perfectly.. and to have a movie, I think, is silly. Are these ladies that desperate for money? The movie will in no way compare to the series and especially if Big or other series regulars aren't apart of it. I guess we will have to wait and see.

GeeMoney Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 11:14 AM EST

We ABSOLUTELY need a SATC movie! The show ended too early. They should have hung on for a 7th or 8th sesaon, if you ask me. I have all of the DVD's and watch them over and over again because the show was hilarious! As long as they bring back all of the same writers, I think that the movie is going to be great!

To Ticked Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 11:03 AM EST

The show brought up issues like AIDS and STDs and birth control; there was nothing hypocritical about it.

Suz Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

I think it depends.. I think it'll be kind of lame if the movie just picks up where the series left off. But yeah, I'd love to get the back story on their friendships, and maybe even their families (does Carrie have a mother?). Either way, I'll probably see it.

Sue Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 10:42 AM EST

I absolutely loved SATC. I watch the (awfully censored and edited) reruns regularly, and own the big pink box of DVDs. But I don't want a movie. I loved the ending of the series - and I don't want to see a movie ruin it. They were all happy at the end, and they'd have to ruin that happiness for a movie. I don't want to see Miranda and Steve having problems, or Charlotte finding out her adoption is more difficult than she thought, or Carrie and Big cheating on each other or whatever. It ended beautifully, which is a tough thing for a series to accomplish. Let it rest.

Ticked Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 10:40 AM EST

Most who say yes are obviously women. The show and others like it, basically tells people to 'do it' with whoever, while the same celebs promote 'awareness' of AIDS and those fun STD's we're always hearing about. Such irresponsible hipocrisy gets me pissed. Wake up people!

AshleyDC Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 10:34 AM EST

The only thing I would want to see out of this is for them to finally explain how the women met.

Lene Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 10:32 AM EST

I'm conflicted. I miss my weekly visit with the women (despite owning several of the DVDs and yes, mine aren't dusty, either). I miss Mr. Big very much. And yet... the series was wrapped up in such a satisfying way that I worry about the changes a movie would bring. Could it be anything but a letdown? Sure, it'd be my own fault for keeping them up there on a pedestal, but still, I worry. That said, if Chris Noth is in it, I'm so there.

djm Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 09:38 AM EST

What I don't get is all the people here who say they are "fans" and "love" the show but then say they don't want the movie. HUH!?!?! If the same writers and producers are on board then your can reasonably trust that it isn't going to suck. And if (like Strangers With Candy) it does - who cares. Don't buy the dvd when it's released. I'm all for the movie - I can't wait to see what's happened to these 4 women since we last saw them. Is Charlotte happy with Harry raising their baby and puppies? Are Miranda and Steve happy? Does his mother live with them - is she still alive? What is up with Samantha? And are Carrie and Big still together (I hope so) and how has being in a stable relationship changed her writing? I just think there are so many possibilities as to where these characters are and have been - and like I said, if the writers and producers are all back I am confident they will do an amazing job of catching us up on our "friends".

angela Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 09:23 AM EST

YES!!!! I miss the girls so much I watch the reruns on TBS each week...still funny after multiple viewings. Bring it on!

Clementine Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 09:21 AM EST

SATC is my all time favorite show... but I was so satisfied with the ending, that I am afraid that the movie will mess that up for me.

johnny utah Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 09:13 AM EST

Wow! What do ya know, hollywood with another terrible idea. This movie will rake in a bunch of money and then be forgotten like all the rest of the crap released in the past couple of years! And sara jessica parker, OH MY GROSS!!!

AKH Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 08:41 AM EST

This show has not aged well- watch the re-runs. Totally unfunny. No need for a movie - Kim Cattrall has totally hit the wall.

Catherine Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 08:38 AM EST

Do we need a SATC movie? Probably not. Will I be running to see it? Hell YES!!! Maybe we can not really relate to these women, but some situation I have seen on this show are just so close to reality. Forget about Mr. Big and Aidan, the friednship between the four women is the real love story of this show, another thing I share with it!!! and that, I can wait to revisit!!

Laurie Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 08:16 AM EST

Bethonie -
I understand your confussion, because coming from of your most recent posts you must have been 12 when SATC started and your parents didn't let you stay up to watch it. SATC movie - heck yes. My shoes strain for it.

Galadriel Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 08:10 AM EST

YES! A thousand times YES!!!

FLIPPER Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 08:04 AM EST

NO. A thousand times, NO!

ZD Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 05:47 AM EST

Can't wait for the reunion movie. Bring it on! And yes to the question.

Helen Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 01:50 AM EST

Do we really need a "Sex and the City" movie?

Absa-f**king-lutely.

Deborah Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 12:18 AM EST

Hell to the no!!!!

Ed Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 12:02 AM EST

No way. The show was good, but it wasn't great, and I think it is becoming dated. Let's be honest, these women weren't that relatable to the everyday woman (or person for that matter).

Mark Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 11:59 PM EST

SATC taught us that love was tricky? My love life was fine until this show enlightened me!

Chris Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 11:25 PM EST

I may be rooting for the wrong, misguided thing here (I am still an Aidan boy), but yes I'm on the side of the movie. Why? Well, in two years time, once Sarah Jessica Parker's career has been boosted again by this film, then there is a chance that another three-moniker Sarah will give me what I've been fantasizing over since 2003: A Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie.
So yes, I am for the movie.

Sarah Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 10:27 PM EST

I love SATC...the outfits, New York, Sarah Jessica Parker. I don't think the movie is necessary but I welcome it entirely, especially if everyone works hard to make it good. If it ends up being something thrown together for a quick buck (like Shrek 3 or some crap) then that would be a little heart breaking.

RyRy Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 09:54 PM EST

i think its pretty obviously a yes! all you d*mb*sses saying no, shut the F*ck up! ur not real fans if you dont miss your four best girlfriends... sit yur ass at home while us true fans reunite with our four favorite manhattanites... btw, just b/c Samantha was screwing jarrod doesnt make her monogamous... it makes her horny

To ceej Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 09:28 PM EST

Oh please! So your idea of these characters being acceptable and not full of BS, as you put it, is that they become miserable harpies who won't go out of their way for anyone and end up a bunch of pathetic alcoholic spinsters who never grow up and whose lives never change?? Get a grip and a clue. Real life isn't like that, so neither should the gals be. And BOO to you for saying that the characters are 'full of crap' for not wanting to live their lives alone. That's the most ignorant thing I've ever heard.

Diana Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 09:03 PM EST

OMG....can't wait...this will be the highlight of my year. The opening night is planned in my datebook already. Dinner in NYC, the movie and drinks afterwards.....I miss the girls and their friendships so much. But Chris Noth must play BIG...if not, the movie will not be a success!!! Get a move on with the production...I can hardly frigin wait!!!!

Shawn Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 08:59 PM EST

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

MelinCali Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 08:27 PM EST

If we can have a 4th Indiana Jones, a 4th Die Hard, and a 1000th Rocky, I see no reason why we can't have ONE Sex and the City!!!

JodyK Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 08:18 PM EST

Do I need a movie about SATC? No. Do I want a movie about SATC? YES DEFINITELY!!!

starchild Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 07:33 PM EST

I'm a huge fan of SATC but I fear a movie unless it's a prequel. Breaking them up and having a whole movie about getting over a man would be horrible. By the way, I loved the finale - getting older is about maturity - maturity is about compromise. People get older - there's nothing pretty about being in your forties having lots of meaningless sex. Loved Samantha's and Smith's relationship. Loved her having sex with him in their last scene together - that's the way Sam should have gone out. Charlotte was always about love and Miranda's character showed great development - you have children, you change. Carrie belonged with Big - HE changed, she didn't.

Ed Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 07:21 PM EST

WHOO HOOO! Boo to all of you that poo-poo the idea of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charolette getting back together! I discovered SATC after the show was finished and would loved to be a part of what it was like when it first came out. How many new fans have been created with just the DVD's alone? With the gay community as well as chick flick material this movie has already made 100 million and it's not even made yet!

...and excuse me but towards the end of the show, season 5 and season 6 had some of the best shows of the series. Critical Condition had the great episode with "the face girl" Nina Katz! Unoriginal Sin had Steve's mom saying, "He's a cute f*cking Catholic!", Plus Oe is the Lonelist Number, "I don't want to be seen on my cover, naked, hailing a cab!" -hello, the list goes on!
Season 6 - Splat! makes me want to smoke a cig and fly out a window!

I think I'll start waiting in line, watch out for me in the news!

eddie Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 07:17 PM EST

Read my lips: YES!!!! We need it! Movie, another movie, a TV Series again! Sex in the City is a true inpiration to all of us hoping to find true love & relationships. It inspired me to move & be a writer here in NYC!

dbanimate Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 07:03 PM EST

I say yes, only because there are about zero women friendly movies these days, and at least its a recycle of a great television show.

mike Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 06:52 PM EST

Who in the entertainment industry can leave well enough alone? The last season was running on fumes. The other three women had little to do, but miss Carrie. Charlotte spent the season chasing after a dog. Leave it alone.

bburlew Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 06:34 PM EST

We don't need a movie-we need a whole series of movies-I miss this show like no other, and while the series did wrap up somewhat satisfactorily, I'm sure there's plenty more to tell-It's about time!

donner Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 06:02 PM EST

When the movie idea was first bantered around a few years ago, a script was already in the works...and some of it was going to go BACK to how the girls met...so we'll get to see them in THOSE fashion (disasters?)...Charlotte in all pink and green with bows in her hair and alligators on her shirt? I think it would be a fun movie, nothing story driven or dramatic...hopefully....I'm looking forward to it, but I don't expect it move the Big/Carrie relationship into heavy problems...I wanna see them have fun w/ Stanford and Harry and Anthony!

DW Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 06:01 PM EST

nope

ceej Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 05:48 PM EST

In a word, no. In more words, Hell No!

That show was such BS. The group of independent women all ended up changing for the man they wanted: Miranda sacrificed her career and NYC lifestyle, Samantha became monogamous, Carrie gave up living in Paris, and Charlotte changed her religion! Now, I know women do these things every day but when you build a case for happy single-dom then couple-off all your happy singles you contradict your very premise. Looking back on the series in re-runs only highlights how full of crap those characters were.

peggym Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

The only reason would be to show what a miserable choice Carrie made by ending up with Big-- a guy who let her down for years, even marrying someone else. Going back to your emotional abuser is a happy ending?

CalL Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 05:39 PM EST

Can't wait, for so many reasons, primarily: the fashion.
I miss the ecletic, NY avant fashion for thirty-somethings. No other show has it quite so interesting/daring yet real.

Joseph Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 05:22 PM EST

As big a fan as I am of SATC...
1. Own the, "Carrie" poster from first season - It was my inspiration to move to NYC
2. Own each individual seasons DVD set AS WELL AS the series ending gift set... (Just can't get into those, "Best Of's" though)
You would think that I'd be turning cartwheels over the SATC movie, but sadly, I'm not and I wish I was.
Thing is, I enjoyed checking in with these characters once a week, it was like hooking up with your best friends for dinner and finding out what was new in their lives.
The show had a beginning, middle and very satisfying end and for me a movie version (Unless the script is FABULOUS) stands a greater chance of ruining what was perfection.
In my opinion, if they wanted to re-visit this show, I would have preferred an, "Extended episode" on HBO every couple years instead of something so special getting the, "Big screen treatment."

Jim Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 05:14 PM EST

I'm excited for the movie, if only to see my four girls out in NY again, chatting, dishing about life and love, and getting themselves into more interesting adventures. Can't wait!

Ceballos Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 05:09 PM EST

Let's get this out of the way first: I'm a fan of the show, and I would likely check out the movie out of curiosity at the very least.

That being said, I agree with Susman's thoughts on the concept of a movie. Though I wasn't a huge fan of the way each of these (allegedly) independent women were neatly paired off with their man in the finale, it DID wrap up the series in a tight little bow.

So creatively speaking, I don't really see where they can go that'll be satisfying (though I'm not saying it can't be done). This mostly just seems as a way to get these four work. I mean, SJP and Cynthia Nixon (with her theatre work) are doing ok, but there are only so many sucky Disney family movies Kristin Davis can star in, and books about her sex life Kim Cattrall can write.

Fatima Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

And by April I meant 2006. I guess you could say I enjoy watching the show, but it is always a weird state of not liking what I'm watching, but needing to see where it goes.

Fatima Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 04:51 PM EST

I borrowed the complete series from a friend last April and I am still on season 3. And these are cable length seasons mind you. I can not stand any of these women except Miranda, and any woman that feels empowered by casual sex and superficial tasks makes me weep for the future of feminism.

Jill Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 04:41 PM EST

BC-- well said. I'm a huge fan of the show, but it did fall off through the end. A movie just doesn't seem too promising to me. It actually sounds sort of depressing.

Elizabeth Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

No thank you. The more I watch this show in reruns the less I like it. The main character put herself in horrible situations with men over and over again and then whined about it. Get some self esteem girl!

Shana Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 04:32 PM EST

yeah it really depends on the main plot concept. I don't really want to see stupid problems created just so they can have a movie. I don't want tem all to gather because one of them is dying a la the Dawson's Creek finale. I don't want Carrie to have a baby or get married. It would be more realistic and true to the show if one or more of te relationships at the end of the show had broken up, either Big and Carrie or Samantha and Smith. So I don't know. I'm a fan so I'm sure I'll see it but it could really suck. Too bad they can't do a movie of how they all met and became friends, but they'd have to use different actors, these ladies look fabulous, but they look their age...

BC Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 04:25 PM EST

First few seasons were great but towards the end it was as if a "Sex and the City" machine was spitting out scripts with cheap, poorly written jokes that attempted to cling to the show's original wit. As far as a movie? No thanks.

EP Sato Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 04:23 PM EST

My curiosity is piqued by how well this will do in theaters. After all, the show was introduced during a different era. Our country's gotten kind of conservative in the cultural sense over the last few years. A movie about promiscuous New York women who lead a life of expensive booze and more expensive shoes sounds like something more appropriate for the CLinton Era than now. While the show stayed on for years after Clinton (obviously), I felt that its fans were in some ways still clinging to a different era.

Can SATC captivate a paying modern audience?

If so, bet my wife will drag me in, and I'll be rooting for Kim Catrall's foxy character.

NineDaves Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 04:18 PM EST

Yes. Yes we do! Because I never had HBO, and I'd like to watch an episode of Sex and the City that everyone in the world hasn't already seen before!

kats Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 04:13 PM EST

I think the show provided a perfectly satisfying ending and there is no need to revisit. They can't really improve, only the potential to tarnish memories exists, so why bother?
