Michael's back on 'Lost': Yay?

Jul 25, 2007, 09:04 PM | by Joshua Rich

Categories: 'Lost'

163653__michael_l Don't know about you, PopWatchers, but today's big news about Harold Perrineau's return to Lost has me as befuddled as the show's mesmerizing season finale. Seriously, I just can't figure out whether I'm glad about this. On the one hand, Perrineau was always one of my favorite actors on Lost (specifically, I'd say he ranks behind only Terry O'Quinn and Josh Holloway), and his sudden departure two seasons ago left me feeling empty inside. On the other hand, the series has been so peaceful and quiet without Perrineau's Michael screaming "Walt!" at every turn. I'm really torn.

Then again, either way, this bit of news raises an even more important conundrum: What's going to happen on Lost now that Michael's back? Will he and Walt return to the island? What will they be up to? How is the show's brain trust going to handle the fact that Malcolm David Kelley will have aged even more noticeably since the last time he appeared as Walt? And what's Michael gonna be shrieking about this time?

Without taking the time to read through all of the comments on this page already, I'm sure someone else must have touched on this by now, but is it not obviou that how they will account for Walt's aging in in the very fact they they will now be doing flash forwards? I think the only place we will see the father and son team is in the future.

Galadriel Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 07:11 AM EST

The man in the casket is probably not Michael. Article on http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Newspaper_clipping says:
In "Through the Looking Glass", Jack is seen looking at the newspaper clipping several times. The article is about a man from New York who was found dead in Los Angeles. He first notices the clipping on a flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. The man in the article seems to be someone both Kate and Jack know as Kate does not want to go to the funeral.

A closer look can suggest that the name of the dead party has a first name beginning with Jo and a last name ending with antham. He died in "The Tower" (Apartments?) on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, possibly a reference to the as-yet-unbuilt Grand Avenue Project.

it's a stretch Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 06:58 AM EST

that's all i'm saying. to use the fact that michael is black to say it is "obvious" (your words) that michael is in the casket is a stretch. do you think the writers are that clear-cut?

pat Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:29 PM EST

Hey buddy, i was just making a mature comment on a modern society's ethic groupings!
If i thought like that then surely i would also think that everyone in the neighbourhood would be attending the funeral! nutjob!
I think you'll find that generally in modern cities (particularly in holywood's portrayal of american cities) ethnic cultures tend to group together in different regions of neighbourhoods.

sure pat Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:19 PM EST

just like every black person on the show is related, too. maybe rose is michael's mom!

the "black neighborhood = black person in a casket" is the lamest. connection. ever.

Pat Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:04 PM EST

agreed completely Mike, of course Micheal was in the casket?
-jack was neither friend nor family
-nobody cared about him enough to go to the funeral
-the funeral parlor was in a very "multicultural" side of an american city

come on guys, its obvious

Namar Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 07:23 PM EST

Can't wait till 4th season!!!

i think michael will be on the ship that is coming onto the island...

they caught him and Walt when they were leaving the islands "safe zone"

i think it is the only logical way...

ya know!

ericalina Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

if people are silly enough to think that michael's character just rowed away at the end of season two and that the producers/writers would never bring him back and explain what might have happened to him and his son, then they are silly enough to complain that this is a spoiler, i guess. cnn.com has it on their front page as well. generally when the creators of the shows announce things to the media, it becomes news, not spoilers.

Ginny Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 04:10 PM EST

It's really ridiculous how people complain about stories like this--like someone else said, the producers announced it at a press conference. Are the reporters supposed to bury this stuff so no one is "spoiled"? Why are you reading Entertainment Weekly if you don't want to know what's happening? And if they used a vague, cryptic headline, wouldn't you read it anyway, to find out what's going on? You are human, aren't you?

Sarah to Future Jack Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 04:07 PM EST

REALLY? I could've sworn he did say "island." Oh well. But another piece of proof that the last episode was a flash forward was Jack's cell phone. He was using a black Motorola KRZR K1m. LOST's island sequences are set in late 2004; all the flashbacks are from before 2004. But the KRZR wasn't released until October 2006. So there's no way anyone in a flashback could be wielding a KRZR. The KRZR guy had to be two years in the future.

Future Jack Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:55 PM EST

Actually Sarah, Jack never said "island".

t3hdow Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:42 PM EST

Although I think this headline is hardly a spoiler by any means, Rachel's post sometimes makes me wish I'm more ignorant towards how every actor/actress plans to shift from one show to another (one reason I really hated Eko's death). Imagine if The Nine lasted longer than it did. What would've happened to Sucre's girlfriend in Prison Break and how would've 24 season 6 changed if Audrey never came back (since both actresses would be busy over at ABC)? Sometimes, I'd rather be left in the dark about these things, but it's not that big a deal in the long run. I must admit I'm bothered when networks hype up 'next-episode' promos to the point that it spoils a great plot twist by foreshadowing the event...usually a character death. Lost did that twice.

Anyway, I'm glad the writers decided to bring back the Michael/Walt subplot that was mostly abandoned in season 3. And by the way Mike, I really like that theory. I can see that working.

saw Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:33 PM EST

I was hoping Walt would NEVER come back so I wouldn't hear "WALT" being hollered all the time.

Sarah Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

mercedes, if the last episode were a flashback, Jack wouldn't have said to Kate, "We have to go back to the island!"

BR in Milwaukee Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

Yes, mercedes, you ARE the only one who thinks the last episode was a flashback.

Deborah Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:16 PM EST

*News* would be if they announced they will start broadcasting new eps in November instead of next year.
Michael returning to Lost is more like "Oh really?"

Snsetblaze Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:09 PM EST

I remember reading an interview or two about two years ago at the time Harold was written out of the series - either by the actor of the producers, that said Michael and Walt would be back at some point. In the meantime, I do remember that Harold also signed up for a pilot but in addition, he shot a part in the movie 28 Weeks Later.

mercedes gallo Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

Am I the only one who thinks that the last episode this season was actually a flashback? My theory is that Jack was the physician to Kate's biological father, who he couldn't save and is in the casket. I think he was so stoned that he didn't recall meeting Kate before.. Kate had only met Jack very briefly , and she didn't recognize him wnen he was clean-shaven after plane crashed.

Ceballos Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:46 PM EST

...but if they wanted this to be surprise, then why did the producers (or the network or publicist or whoever it was) announce it to a group of reporters at a TV press tour.

I mean, they announced it, and this is NEWS. Why would Popwatch or EW (or anyone else) sit on this story or go out of their way to keep it a secret?

I mean, where would it stop? Would they not be allowed to announce any casting news of ANY show? Like Nathan Fillion joining "Desperate Housewives" for a few episodes. It would've been hella cool to just have him show up, but if ABC announces it, then it's news. Or are people annoyed at this Michael "spoiler" because of Lost's nature as a more mysterious show?

It's just the world we live in now. When I was growing up I don't remember reading anything about what was going to happen anywhere on any show. Part of that was because the coverage wasn't nearly what it was, and part of it was that I was a kid. Ok I need to get off Popwatch and finish work.

kcholt68 Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

I already sent an email about this because of the front page headline, but isn't this a spoiler? Maybe some people would have liked for Michael's return to have been a surprise.
-kch, http://moviedearest.blogspot.com/

Galadriel Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:55 AM EST

Ceballos, you're right. At least Charlie did go out in a noble fashion. Even Monaghan has said in interviews that he didn't want his character to have a lame ending or fade into the distance. I'll miss his character so much. Let's hope they do more with Sawyer, and perhaps make Jack a more likable, understandable character. And if they're bringing Michael back, let's have him be a little more interesting and not a one-note character.

Mark Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:48 AM EST

The producers have always said they had a plan to deal with Walt's growth, so Michael may only appear in flashforwards, or if they got picked up by the other Others' boat that's about to "rescue" the lostaways, something might have happened to Walt where he doesn't survive.

Fatima Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

Yay! There is a lot more about Walt we as an audience need to know about. I'd be pissed if he didn't come back at this point.

FunkyRedrum Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:40 AM EST

Best headline I saw about it was from Fark.com, which was something to the effect "Everyone get your Waaaaaaaalt-o-nators out". LOl

Ceballos Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:29 AM EST

Mike...I like it.

Mike Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST

It would make sense that Michael was in the casket. Jack was so desperate to get back to the island, and Michael had obviously gotten off the island. So Jack needed Michael to tell him the coordinates Michael used to leave the island. Since Michael's now dead, Jack realizes he'll never get back to the island.
Anyone buying this theory?

Ceballos Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

I understand that Dominic Monaghan fans are upset that his character's dead ("I was yelling, get out of that room and close the door Charlie!" myself), but I would hardly say he got shafted by the writers.

In fact, his death was actually one of the more beautiful ones I've seen in recent memory both visually (the way he just kinda hung there in the water and crossed himself was wrenching and touching) and character wise because he (seemingly) went out as a hero. It was the great culmination of one of the more entertaining subplots last year (Desmond's flashes of Charlie's death). I'd much rather have had it happen this way than have Charlie go through more "will he or won't he relapse to drugs" or whining around like he did during part of season 2 and the beginning of season 3 or other similarly repetitive storylines.

I miss the guy, and I look forward to seeing him in flashbacks, but I'm sorry, he hardly got shafted. For characters that got shafted see Eko, or Libby, etc.

Tatiana Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:12 AM EST

Oh no, not Perrineau a-g-a-i-n!

i was so damn happy seeing him leave the island (and the series) that this news is a shock.

"they took my son!"

boocat Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

I think it's important to the story to bring Michael and Walt back. I am looking forward to it..

Sarah Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:02 AM EST

Oh, I agree 100% that Josh Holloway is the best thing about LOST. He's smart, angry, funny, full of himself, yet gets humbled quite frequently, he has no trouble hurting people yet is easily hurt himself... so complex, so believable and SO HOT!!!

annie Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:57 AM EST

This is soooo interesting!! Harold is a very good actor, though I hated Michael for betraying the Castaways. Maybe he'll turn out to have been the person in the coffin? Though that wouldn't explain, as of yet, why Jack would go see him.
Also, I completely agree with everyone who loves Josh Holloway! He is seriously an amazing actor - not many people could effectively convey the complexity of Sawyer, and be so amazingly hot!!

zoya Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:55 AM EST

I never liked Michael and was glad he was gone. BUT, I would like an explanation. I thought he might be on the ship that Jack contacted. He could be coming back for everyone, but he killed 2 people in cold blood. How will that play in his "return?"
I can't imagine the Losties would welcome him back. At least, I hope he has Walt with him - I won't be able to stand hearing him yell "WAAAALT" again!

Galadriel Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:54 AM EST

vh: There had BETTER be more flashbacks with Charlie! He SO got shafted by the writers.

Working Girl Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:53 AM EST

Among all my Lost-watching friends, I am the only one who ever enjoyed Michael's storyline and missed him when he was gone. Guess is my lucky day. Sorry, suckahz!

vh Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:52 AM EST

What about Charlie? Definite flashbacks with Charlie?

Lene Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:46 AM EST

Never missed him. Liked the show just fine (better, actually) without him. Might've been the constant "WAAAALT"ing, but he irritated the snot out of me.

LostLisa Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:46 AM EST

I don't know if it is the Lost drought we are in, or what, but this email spiked some adrenaline rush in me! One huge laugh I got a couple years back was when I saw the slogan, "Guns don't kill people. Michael kills people." I'm glad he's coming back and I don't care how really..in fact I'm having a future Jack moment right now...I need to get back to the island!!!!

paige Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

WOOHOO!

Galadriel Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:41 AM EST

If this article were announcing that Dominic Monaghan were coming back to LOST, I would care. But, Michael? Not so much.

Joe C Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:40 AM EST

Thanks for the tip, Rachel. So THAT'S why Michael wasn't on the show this year; Harrold Perrineau was supposed to do another show. Reality intrudes on fantasy; I thought the writers were just teasing us.

Chris Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:39 AM EST

I thought it was common knowledge that Michael would be back this season?

jen Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:26 AM EST

e! online is reporting that MDK may not be returning as a recurring character. they are also saying he won't be part of the flash forwards. my thought is that maybe michael will be on that ship that is coming to pick up the lostaways...as in the ship happened upon michael and walt floating around the island trying to find the coordinates.

and kudos to joshua for recognizing the awesomeness that is josh holloway. far too many people only recognize terry o'quinn or matthew fox, but josh is more than a pretty face (and body...ha). his acting has been superb. he's always been one of my favorite losties (along with terry, of course).

Rachel Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 08:58 AM EST

I agree with other posters that Michael will figure into the flash forwards.

What concerns me is that this last minute annoucement was not intentionally planned for this season (the actor had signed on to another pilot that did not get picked up). I'm sure the writers figured Michael would be back before the series close, it just makes me wonder about how much of the details they have already crafted around the remaining 48 episodes. (Rather than making it up as they are going along).

Having read the last Harry Potter book, it made me aware how important it is that an author who has crafted a series know how the puzzle pieces fit into the larger scheme. I hope that when the Lost writers went off to their "writers camp" this summer they thought the series through to the end and how many of these pieces fit.

To Heather Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 08:54 AM EST

You really think that headline was a "spoiler"? Do you not watch commercials which preview upcoming shows? What about the scenes for the next week's episodes at the end of every episode?

Laura Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 08:17 AM EST

And NOW Jin can continue saying, "Michael is my friend." which he said almost as much as Michael screamed WALT in season 2.

krissysue2 Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 08:16 AM EST

Oops. Should've read all the comments... that seems to be the consensus... (flashfowards).

krissysue2 Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 08:15 AM EST

What about the idea that Michael and Walt appear in a flashforward, thus explaining Walt's age and growth?

Joe C Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 07:53 AM EST

At least I won't be able to torment my fellow 'Lost' fans by always asking 'where's Michael?' They had to bring him back. Remember, he betrayed Jack, Kate, and Sawyer at the end of season 2, so how will they react to his character? Good news....

Dan TO Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 07:26 AM EST

Is this really spoiler? All it really says to me is that at some point during the course of the last 48 episodes we'll find out what happened to Michael when he "left" the island. I would say that's a pretty big loose end to leave hanging.

oh boy! Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 06:15 AM EST

the spoiler police are back!!!!

dark_tyler Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 05:59 AM EST

What the first poster said. Michal won't be coming back to the island...

Heather Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:48 AM EST

Cara...it can read pretty much anything as long as it doesn't name specific characters. There are other columnists who've written about this and used vague headlines. "Lost character returns" or "Character reappears on Lost". Whatever gives the reader the idea that a character is returning without saying which one.

Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:12 AM EST

I think its sweet! He was always one of my favorite characters...maybe he'll return on that boat thats looking for the island that Jack contacted...who knows? As for Walt, idk how they will bring him back and make it seem logical with the way he will have grown up.

V.M.L. Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 11:45 PM EST

It was a given that he'd be returning because Walt reappeared in the last episode.

cara Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 11:06 PM EST

and what should the headline read, heather?

Heather Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 10:17 PM EST

It would be really great if you wouldn't put spoilers in your titles. Thanks muchly!

Jill Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 10:15 PM EST

I think this is great news! Not so much because I loved Michael all that much, but more so because I have really been wanting to know what actually happened to him when he was allowed to "leave" the island. I also like Walt, so it will be fun if he comes back too. I enjoyed seeing him in the season finale, and I am interested in knowing what the Others did with him after they kidnapped him.

Ceballos Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:29 PM EST

"I AM GOING TO FIND MY BOY...WALLTTT!!!!"

Anyway, I agree with the people saying that Michael and Walt will likely figure in the flash forwards (which actually turned out to be an ingenius way to reincorporate the rapidly growing Malcolm David Kelley).

Though I'd grown tired of Michael (honestly, all he did in season 2 was run around like a maniac screaming for Walt...it's ALL he did), I think Harold is a great actor and I'll be really glad to see him on the show. The news was a pleasant surprise for me because I'd kind of moved on from Michael and Walt as season 3 progressed (and became excellent toward the end). Now I'm thinking it's another exciting twist in a show I just cannot wait to return.

Daniel Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:11 PM EST

Yeah, I'm guessing he'll be back in flash-forwards.

sarah Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:10 PM EST

I'm all for his return. He should come back as his character in Romeo & Juliet. That would be a hotmess.

hannah Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:58 PM EST

Maybe he'll appear in the future flash forwards. In that case, it would be easy to handle Walt's aging...
