Happy Birthday, Lindsay Lohan!

Jul 2, 2007, 05:39 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Celebrity Birthdays

Lohan_l Lindsay Lohan turns 21 today, and though I know you'd prefer to be reading whatever haiku Slezak would pen in her honor, he's off today, like 95 percent of the EW staff. So, PopWatchers, let's celebrate in an even more constructive way: by playing armchair agent and suggesting what kind of project she should do next to win back her fans. Before you get your snark on, know that I'm writing this from a Craig Ferguson don't-make-fun-of-those-who-need-help-and- are-getting-it place, and would encourage you all to join me there. (Remember how much you loved  The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, and Mean Girls — or at least didn't hate them? Channel it.)

Personally, I'd love to see Lohan return to a project that she announced in 2004, and then abandoned— the film adaptation of Lynn Messina's debut novel Fashionistas (think Lauren Weisberger's The Devil Wears Prada only smarter, funnier, and quirkier— and I'm not just saying that because I've known Messina for 10 years). Lohan needs a sharp, clever, underdog character that reminds us that she's bright, talented, and, most importantly, someone we can still root for. She'd find it in those pages. What project would you pitch Lohan?

LINDSAY ROCKZ!!!

autumn Thu, Jul 2, 2009 at 10:29 AM EST

The computer lied to me yesterday and said she was going to be 24. But she REALLY is 21 today. she will be 24 in the year,2012. so the computer was way off. btw Happy Birthday Lindsay!

MadisonNYC Sat, Apr 25, 2009 at 12:21 AM EST

I thought I was the only one who see's her as Neely O'Hara!
Lohan we still love you some sad people just need to say bad things. Neely O'Hara is a chracter you'd kill and we all want to see you do it. Please do it for the fans! It will be a new classic.... And the tabs would go CRAZY for it! I do agree about Kate Holmes as Anne for sure. But no Paris she should just crawl uner a rock. Merryl Streep could do Helen Lawson.

Then you need a project were you team up with Britany Murphy. Or jsut cut an album together!!!

Great minds think alike, Murderpuss - I was ust saying the other day that LiLo should do Neely O'Hara ... with Paris (after a boob job) playing the Sharon Tate role - and Katie (oops, I mean Kate) Holmes-Cruise as Anne. And now that he's playing women, John Travolta could do Helen Lawson (the Susan Hayward part). God, Hollywood needs me to be a casting agent! LOL

fredric Wed, Jul 4, 2007 at 07:08 PM EST

Even in her clunkers, she still comes off well. I think if she were to do more ensemble work, something where the bankability weren't completely on her shoulders, it would help her inch her way back into things more. She won't have the amount of stress, but perhaps moviegoers would still see some of her movies based on whoever else was in the film. I think her star power has diminished unfortunately, so this might be the only way she could have a hit in the near future.

My suggestion: Get the Knocked Up/40-Year Old Virgin team to get her into a comedy project.

To Give Me A Break Wed, Jul 4, 2007 at 04:32 PM EST

Her looks are not all that unique. I see girls who look like her everyday. This is especially true in Northern Califonia.

Millie Wed, Jul 4, 2007 at 04:30 PM EST

Hope this girl can think for herself at the age of 21. If she is having issues with her mother's upbringing, she can afford a good therapist. Hopefully her age will not be an excuse for further intoxication.

peggym Wed, Jul 4, 2007 at 09:39 AM EST

to give me a break--I didn't say i think my daughter looks like her(the resemblance is superficial), i said she had been mistaken for her. No, I don't look like Morgan Fairchild, more like Aunt Bea.

stephen to tyler d Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 08:46 PM EST

I saw ew's recommendation for 'I Love You, Beth Cooper,' and I just read it, and am skeptical. Beth was so wild, and I think critics wouldn't get past that, like they did in Georgia Rule. (By the way, I LOVED that book. Just thought you'd like to know).

Coach's Mistress Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 05:56 PM EST

Advice for Lindsey:
1. Sack your mom
2. Go to college
3. Do worthwhile REAL charity work. Put your name on something positive and be a major FORCE with the project.
4. Once you've graduated from college with the degree of your choice, you are permitted to re-enter the movie/recording industry.
5. Trust me.

Chris Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 02:55 PM EST

She needs to get over her obsession with being in the press so audiences can believe that she is a character...and not just herself.

If we know too much about YOU, we care less about the CHARACTER.

BHM1304 Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 01:58 PM EST

Find a screenwriter and director that can do John Irving's "Hotel New Hampshire" justice and cast Lindsay as "Frannie". (Just forget the Jodie Foster version even exists, not Jodie's fault but it was a baaaad movie that ruined a spectacular book.)

I would pay to see that.

donner Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

I've never seen a movie w/ Lindsay in it, and now based on her behaviour, I have no intention of doing so...am I shallow? hell yeah...but I'm not gonna spend my money on her (or Tom Cruise or Jennifer Lopez - yuck) so that they can continue to act the way they do...do it behind closed doors where we don't have to be witness to it! Like John Travolta and Jake Gyylleennhhaall do...And to be honest, I don't think I'm missing much by not seeing a Blohan movie...I mean she is only 20/21, right? How much have I missed?

Sue Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 01:31 PM EST

I agree with GingerCat - she needs to do some ensemble movies where she's not the focus (i.e. NOT the girl on the poster, the one who gets the tickets sold), where she can show her talent again and re-establish her acting reputation. She was great in Prairie Home Companion, but everything she's done lately where she tried to star was truly painful.

Who dey? Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 01:14 PM EST

Happy 21st birthday Lindsay!

Martin Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

Lindsay SO should have been in Transformers. But no, oh no, she'd rather spend the summer (i.e., 2006's) in Malibu up to no good. I saw the movie last week and thought that Megan Fox - who's cute and "adequite" and all but is starting to get irritating with her tough-ass chick off-screen facade, already - should thank her lucky star that L2 is so undesirable to work with perhaps that Michael Bay didn't even consider her for the part (there were no rumors of it, unlike with M:i:III).
L2 should have never pulled out of a Woman of No Importance, Bill, or Best Times of Our Lives. And she should fire Dina - stat. There are plenty great professional managers in Hollywood. Also, she should hire Stephen Huvane to handle press. And enough with the going out with Samantha Ronson and Calum Best and Karl Lagerfeld. Ron and the Lag are great, but one's a DJ moocher and the other's too old and eccentric.
Pick up a book this summer - one not "written" by a co-star. Take a pottery class. Take care!

Tyler D Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

Actually, I also agree with the recommendations for college, though something tells me Lindsay has been raised to value fame and money over education and maturity. Also, teh idea of doing an adaptation of "I Love You Beth Cooper" is fantastic, though they would really need a good screenwriter for it - maybe someone like BJ Novak could do it.

Tyler D Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 12:41 PM EST

Did someone seriously just wish death upon her? Wow... that's just... wow. Anyway, the only thing I think Lohan should do for the next year of her life is just break ties with her parents and find a mentor of some sort. She also needs representation that is focused on something other than just making her a celebrity.

Joe C Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 11:19 AM EST

Well, I certainly would suggest she stay in rehab for a while. She then needs to act in ensemble movies so the focus doesn't have to be EXCLUSIVELY on her. And forget the music, please. Finally, yes, she needs to make the break from her mother who needs to get her own life.

Stephanie T. Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 11:10 AM EST

Whimsey has got a point there. Plus Lohans resemblance to Ann Margret Olsen (minus vocal) is uncanny. Seriously, let her red hair grow in, add in a little light red highlights, and vola! Still when she does get her act together, some college would not kill her either.

GeeMoney Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

I would suggest her next move be "death", because I'm soooooo sick of her, not to mention, Paris and Britney as well (even though I looooove Britney, but she makes me want to barf right now). I don't even care that Lindsay has talent....I'm over her. I think she would have to disappear for a few years and then make a solid, sober comeback for me to like her again.

johnny utah Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 10:33 AM EST

I cant stand this chick. But,if she wants her career back she definetly needs to go the Drew Barrymore rout and actually stay in rehab and get her life straight.

Susan Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 10:32 AM EST

I think that when choosing what movies to do she should stick to characters close to her in age who don't have much depth. I've seen most of her movies, not ever because she's the star and been amazed at how much talent she doesn't have. Sure she was cute in the Parent Trap and spoke with a credible accent. Freaky Friday the remake was better then the original (minus Chad Michael Murray) and Mean Girls was awesome (And that success can be laid at the feet of Rachel Mcadams and the rest of the ensemble cast). Lindsey is beautiful but she doesn't have half the talent people seem to think she has. She has no depth and no range and Please God dont let her put out any more cds. I don't want to put down the people who are down on their luck but she and Britney have something in common, they need to leave Hollywood.. Now! Pack their bags and try to lead normal lives before they go crazier they already have. Who cares what movies they make? I hope she never makes another!

Mozz Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 09:56 AM EST

I actually like Lindsay Lohan, I'm not obsessed with following people's downfalls in the media, so I missed a lot of what was going on with her, and just recently learned that Paris was in jail. Wow, where was I all that time? I was actually doing something constructive. I do love movies, and I think she's really talented... Fashionistas sound excellent, but I'm all for her taking two years off and reinventing herself.

KingLouieXVIII Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 09:35 AM EST

How about go to college so that maybe she can stop being such a dumba**. Maybe after she gets and education she will have the ability to choose film projects that don't suck.

djm Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 09:09 AM EST

Oh yeah - and I agree with the other posters here - dump your trailer trash mom and stay as far away from your skeezy dad as you possibly can. It's true that family is important, but not when they are toxic to you or your well being (as these 2 CLEARLY are). And if you do decide to go clubbing again (which I never have understood WHY a bar would serve alcohol to or allow in an underage person like her - hello, if I were a ABC officer looking to bust bars for serving minors I'd have just follwed her around every weekend - but i digress) make sure you do it right and just od - then everyone would talk about how great you were and your legacy will be set as the talented girl that died too young. Better that than a washed up hag who can't control herself.

djm Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 09:04 AM EST

I think she should take about 5 years off and get a real life - like maybe go to college - and then come back and try again. Frankly there is nothing she could star in right now that would make me want to go see a LL flick - and I mean nothing.

Murderpuss Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 08:55 AM EST

Neely O'Hara in a remake of "Valley of the Dolls" directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 08:52 AM EST

A movie called "Ugly"- the premise would be the fall of a vain, spoiled drug addict child star/ actress.
Seriously, that would be great to see a raw film showing how unpretty these girls' behaviors really are...and that there can still be redemption.

Ames Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 08:41 AM EST

I don't know if she's fallen this far yet, but the proven method of getting back on your feet is to guest star as a killer on a version of L&O.

GingerCat Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 08:11 AM EST

Mandi, I agree with you--"Fashionistas" is a much better book than "The Devil Wears Prada." I used to be skeptical of Lohan starring in an adaptation of it because she was too young. Fortunately, now that she's the age of many college graduates, I think she could pull it off.
As for other ways to revitalize her career, she should stop partying so much. When your movie's producer makes a public statement about your bad behavior, it's time to tone it down.
She should also take more roles in ensembles like "Prairie Home Companion" and "Bobby" and fewer starring vehicles unless they're actually good scripts. She's a good actress and she needs to stop distracting people from that fact.

Diane Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 07:46 AM EST

I agree with everyone who said to ditch the mom. Dina appears to be an enabler who is doing her no favors at all... as a mom or as a manager.

Diane Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 07:44 AM EST

I think Lindsay should do a light romantic comedy with someone like Hugh Grant--he may be a little old fo LiLo, but he does romantic comedy well and brings in his own audience so that it isn't all on Linds.

Give me a break Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 05:35 AM EST

Yeah, peggym, I'm sure your daughter looks just like Lindsay Lohan. And who do you think you look like, Morgan Fairchild? Whatever.

bootsycolumbia Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 04:18 AM EST

As a fellow redhead, I hope she goes back to her natural colour. I also hope she unloads that mom of hers and hires a professional manager and agent. I'd also like to see her give up the singing career. Her voice is good, but not exceptional, but she is a good actress. Focusing on smart roles in good movies is the way for Lindsay to go. But above all, stick to rehab and a 12 Step program, Lindsay. You won't regret it.

Patrick Gray Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 11:36 PM EST

Sources over at Untitled Entertainment and CAA have told me that Lindsay Lohan is still getting offers for high-profile roles but Lindsay has been turning them down to focus more on her emotional well being. I know Robert Rodriguez is very fond of Lohan's acting ability and thinks she is perfect for the title role in "Barberella" as does it's original Jane Fonda. She wants the role and she probably will do it before the end of the year. She also has "Poor Things" and "Hippy" set to be filmed before year end plus she is planning on recording her third album which is going for a urban pop sound. Producers are expected to include Pharrell Williams, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. So Lindsay might be in trouble with the law but she is still being loved by Hollywood.

Phil Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 11:20 PM EST

First, I think the comparison to J.Lo is kinda ridiculous, cause does J.Lo even really qualify as "being back?" Her Spanish album kinda flopped, & until her two movies she's got in the can comes out, or she drops this pop hit from her forth-coming "dance leaning" album...nah, j.lo is not back. If ANYTHING the BACKlash is there & has hit her hard.

How quickly everyone forgets when sweet rom-com queen Drew barrymoore was Hollywood's wild child. Sure that was quite some time, and many rehab stints ago, but if there is any actress to compare where Lindsay's path needs to lead to, it would be Miss Barrymoore!

And Brainiac, personally i thought the I KNOW WHO KILLED ME trailer was great and actually made me look forward to seeing it. now, the movie just needs to NOT suck. It looks intriguing and honestly, Lindsay needs it to be the start of her turn around if she really wants this Hollywood career to continue. Also, i hope she nixes the idea to record another BORING album this year.

Stephanie Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 11:11 PM EST

I suggest that she does a period piece where her voice won't sound so horse and raspy. It would be great if another Jane Austin book was adapted and she played the love-lorn heroine. Think Kate Winslet in Sense and Sensibility. What am I saying? One can only dream that she would ever be that amazing.

what a relief! Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 10:05 PM EST

a break from the trying-too-hard haikus, thank goodness!

jen Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 08:55 PM EST

Oops, meant megastar.....bad spelling.

Jen Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 08:55 PM EST

Okay, so I'm going to bring up another magastar with the last initials of "LO" who made the world sick to death of her. J LO. After the Bennifer thing, I didn't think she would ever get "it" back, or him for that matter. But they did the best thing....laid low, found a good solid piece of work to come back with, and dated and worked with respectable people. Let's hope Lohan can get a good grip on life and learn three times in rehab is NOT a charm!

Brainiac Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 07:54 PM EST

One more thing......voice-overs for animated films! That would be a good way for her to "disappear" but still keep some dough rolling in (since she's probably blown a whole lot of it supporting her drug habit). They should be big blockbuster, Disney-Pixar-esque or Dreamworks-esque films, like Shrek or Finding Nemo.

And for the love of God, please, please, PLEASE stop going to clubs, and make sure the parties you attend don't require behaviour-altering substances to have a good time. Dress tastefully and conservatively. Like I said before, return to your redheadness. Dump your "momager". She's your mom, and that's it. Get a real manager, a serious professional who cares about your well-being and your career. Tabloid gossip buzz doesn't (always) translate into box-office success.

Becky Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 07:33 PM EST

I think Lindsay was great in A Prairie Home Companion, so I think another small ensemble film would be great for her. Her latest movies where she is the main star haven't been quite well-received, so I would like to see her step back and disappear into a character. She was also great in Bobby.

Jeremy Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 07:31 PM EST

I'm trying so hard to be nice... I'm trying, I'm trying...

Oh, i just can't do it.

When I saw the trailer for I KNOW WHO KILLED ME, I was initially intrigued by the concept until i realized that the main actress was none other than Miss Lohan...

I don't think I've ever had that kind of a reaction to an actor...

I can still watch Tom Cruise and put aside his crazy Oprah antics, Hugh Grant still makes me laugh even after his romp with questionable women of the night, and I can't wait to see Winona Ryder make a triumphant return to the screen after her juvenile run-in with the law.

but Lohan... I just can't take her anymore... An obnoxious spoiled brat... and I can't see anything else...

Sorry Lohan, you're really going to have to prove yourself off the screen (or maybe quit trying to prove yourself and just disappear for a while) before I can watch you without bringing your truck load of baggage with me to the theatre.

Brainiac Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 07:20 PM EST

Amen to the red hair, Stephanie! I was going to suggest doing a prestige piece with some true-blue Hollywood veterans, but we all know how well Georgia Rule went over......

I agree with a lot of the posts that she should do a heart-warming family comedy. Sharp and witty comedies never fail! (Well, almost.) Also, she could try a prestige piece where she needs an accent. A really convincing and authentic-sounding accent is Hollywood gold.

I hope she doesn't do anything morbid or depressing like I Know Who Killed Me. Yuck! Go back to your Mean Girls roots, LiLo!

Lene Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 06:52 PM EST

Wouldn't it be great if she kicked her problem and went back to being the talented and smart performer she used to be? Every time I see her on the cover of some tabloid, I feel as sad as I used to when Robert Downey Jr. went through his troubles. Sad for her and for the people like myself who can't wait to see her act again.

whimsey Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 06:51 PM EST

I suggest she scour archived scripts for roles made for Ann Margret, but the studio felt was too risky at the time. Update them and score.

Ceballos Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 06:39 PM EST

Lindsay needs to go away for a year, get her life together (stop doing coke!!!) and come back and actually do what she was doing...

Pick smart comedies (like "Mean Girls" NOT "Just my luck") with a healthy helping of ensemble indie fare "A Prairie Home Companion"

whol Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 06:13 PM EST

self parody...best way to go

Kaitlin Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 06:07 PM EST

I think she needs to go back to something like "mean girls." She is a great comedian and think she could really bring back the female lead romantic comedy. Mostly something set in college or just out of high school. Something written by Tina Fay or someone else from SNL. It would be good to see someone not part of the party scene as her female friend like Maeby from Arrested Development. As for the male lead, I don't know maybe Shia LaBeouf and Justin Long.

peggym Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 05:56 PM EST

My daughter has often been mistaken for Lindsay in the past(same age, same hair, height, etc), and just the little flurry of attention she gets then is upsetting. Think of living this way since you were a child, in addition to being Mommy's meal ticket. Let's all give her a break.

Nathan Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 05:51 PM EST

I'm just waiting for day she finds a script with a nice tasteful nude scene.

Ed Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 05:47 PM EST

Oh my god, L.L needs to take some time off - like a year! On this year off she needs to do some charity work in which she gets some positive exposure. Put away your singing career and get rid of your mom.

When you come back, start a clothing line for gay guys by opening your own boutique in West Hollywood. Then release your own purfume line which also caters to the gays.
The gays will always forgive you, make them your target audience.

Matthew Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 05:31 PM EST

EW reccomended this, but I agree that she'd make a great Beth Cooper in a film version of "I Love You Beth Cooper"-preferrably opposite someone like Shia LaBeouf.

bj Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 05:13 PM EST

you have to see this FUNNNNNNYYYYY
http://youtube.com/watch?v=y0FuMRHRCVY

she needs to do an action movie

Aaron Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

I would actually love to see her in a father-daughter sports movie, something simple and gentle and about relationships. She and her father (Billy Bob Thornton) set out to win the local soap box derby and mend their strained relationship. Set it in the 70s for throwback charm (and a little bit of rightly-placed feminism) and you have a fun, family hit.

Paul U. Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 04:54 PM EST

What project would I pitch her? Retirement!

Stephanie Travitsky Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 04:53 PM EST

Let's just hope that the days she spent at rehab or the days she will stay in rehab will restore her back to her "Mean Girls" acting talent. Plus, perhaps she will rethink her toe up blonde dye job and go back to her normal red hair.
