To Care or Not to Care: Backstreet's Back, alright?

Jul 26, 2007, 04:12 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Music, To Care or Not to Care

Bsb_l The Backstreet Boys, sans eldest member Kevin Richardson, will release a new album on Oct. 30, in honor of their 10th anniversary on label Jive, Billboard reports. The quartet — Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough and AJ McLean — will shoot their first single, "Inconsolable," to radio on Aug. 27. If "Inconsolable" is anything like "Incomplete" (the video for which I still say featured the Best Dramatic Acting by a Boy Band in a Video. Ever.), I'll give it one listen. I'm willing to go out on a limb and say Richardson was the expendable member — and also that it will be better than anything that comes out of VH1's forthcoming Man Band reality series, teaming Chris Kirkpatrick ('N Sync), Jeff Timmons (98 Degrees), Rich Cronin (LFO), and Bryan Abrams (Color Me Badd).

I really want Kevin back in the backstreet boys. Even if he never comes back to me he will always be remembered as a backstreet boy! :D

People please stop and leave BSB alone! And what is the picture> No matter what Kevin Richardson will always be a Backstreet Boy, to the fans and to the other memebers!!!

I really wish people would stop bashing the Backstreet Boys just because they have preconcieved notions of them. Also, they were incredibly shamefully treated by the editors and producers of the Celebrity Apprentice. It is a REALITY SHOW with writers, pleases to not base what you see on such a show to real life. It is deeply shameful how I have been seeing people leaping to conclusions/maliciously attacking these entertainers for their own ends.

I hope all you Backstreet Boy fans saw them on Celebrity Apprentice. They obviously did not get the memo from Diddy for No B****A**NESS. They should be glad somebody wanted to see them.

I've heard some of the previews & leaked songs from BSB's new album, and it really sounds like they tried to show some versatility. The songs cover a wide range of genres. I think it's def going to be better than some of their previous records.

manny Sat, Oct 13, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

i think kevin left cause his kid was just born and wanted to spend time with him bsb said dat the door is always open for him when ever he wants to come back so hopefully kevin will after he spends some time with his kid i mean its understandable why he didnt comeback and the guys hav no hard feelings towards him so datz all good

Michelle Elaine Mckee Fri, Sep 28, 2007 at 06:06 PM EST

I LOVE THE BACKSTREET BOYS!!!! PERIOD. THEY RULE!! YEAH SURE I'VE LISTEN TO THEM FOR 13 YEARS AND STOPPED 4 YEARS AGO. BUT IF THEY ARE BACK, THEN SO AM I. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I WILL LISTEN TO ALL MUSIC. I LOVE MUSIC THANKS TO MY BSB. THEY SAVED ME WHEN MY GRANDMA DIED. AND I'LL KEEP THE BACKSTREET PRIDE ALIVE WHEN NO ONE ELSE WILL. I HAVE TO SAY THANK YOU, BRIAN, KEVIN, NICK, AJ, AND HOWIE!!! KEEP ON MAKING MUSIC AND IF NOT, THAN JUST BE HAPPY AND STAY HEALTHY. THANK YOU MY FAVORTIE FIVE FOR EVERYTHING. I LOVE YOU.

Anna Tue, Aug 28, 2007 at 12:20 PM EST

did kevin leave? I dont understand did he quit the band?? I need to know :)

Melanie Thu, Aug 9, 2007 at 01:12 AM EST

I definitely care.

Oh and Nuchy, did you SEE their 'Just Want You To Know" video? I don't think anyone can claim they "take themselves too seriously" anymore.

Anna Mon, Aug 6, 2007 at 10:57 PM EST

I'm happy that they're back. Anyone who says that they're talentless OBVIOUSLY has never seen these guys sing acapella, even on command. Even if it's a song they haven't sang in 4 years. Or even if it's in a different language. These guys are talented. No wonder they're the last guys standing.

Amy Sun, Jul 29, 2007 at 10:17 PM EST

I still love the Backstreet Boys and i'm definitely buying their new album and it's definitely worth listening to. KTBSPA!!!

Silv Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 06:56 PM EST

BSB are still my guilty crush - and I'm excited to hear they have something new coming out. A part of me always wished I'd had someone to inspire such "emotion" as "Incomplete."

britt Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 06:40 PM EST

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Backstreet! so glad they have another album coming out, im wicked excited. the last one, Never Gone, was truly amazing, and i have a feeling this one will be nothing short of it!

Stephanie T. Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

Uh, EP Marky Walberg was originally supposed to be part of NKOTB but he decided to do his own thing. I am glad that he did because he is a better actor than rapper. Donnie Walberg also has skills.

Stephanie T. Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 03:28 PM EST

Oi! "New Kids on the block were a bunch of d-ks, LFO makes me sick, and Backstreets bland bandmates are old and moronic!"

Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

Hey...if they need a fifth...how 'bout including the Carter sib...Aaron????? Ya Whooo Yi...

Dave Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

I'm totally psyched for this! I loved BSB, and n*sync, in high school, and will definitely check out this album. While I agree with miv that n*sync's up tempo stuff surpassed BSB's (but not the ballads, hello I Want it That Way), Larger Than Life remains one of the best boy band songs from that era. And, yes, I'm 25 years old and loving the nostalgia this post is eliciting!

Sarah Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 11:01 AM EST

You know what, I bought "Never Gone" on its first day in stores and was at the first show of their world tour in West Palm Beach. I may be 18, but I'm STILL getting this the day it comes out. Backstreet's back, alright!

Kate Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

Didn't they already do Man Band before and didn't it stink?

Chris Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 10:26 AM EST

Excellent one, FUP!!

Gillian Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

I'm a huge BSB fan! Always have been, always will be. I'm looking forward to the new album and think that they'll be different, but fine without Kevin. He rarely sang lead and I'm sure their four part harmony will sound great. Say what you want about boy bands, but they can actually sing well and have put out some really solid pop songs over the years. I'm totally excited for their return! KTBSPA!

miv Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 09:58 AM EST

I always thought their ballads were supreme pop cheese at its best! I will be one to listen to their new stuff just to get more karaoke material. Their up-tempo stuff always paled in comparison to NSync's but their ballads were da bomb :)

FUP Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 04:07 AM EST

Well, good for you Moni, you are so important you can just drop a turd and leave.

Moni Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 02:02 AM EST

Throwing in my "I care." They aren't a bubble-gummy manufactured group anymore. And a clip of Inconsolable is available online. As well as full versions of Happily Never After and Helpless When She Smiles. Just fyi, I never check back my comments nor do I check my email, so don't ask me where to find the songs. Check any BSB fan pages or ask a die hard fan. I am sure a number of posters here have it or if you're feeling naughty any p2p network.

Nuchy Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:52 PM EST

Backstreet Boys always took themselves far too seriously even for a regular pop group, much less a boy band. And they're boring. There really isn't much demand for cheesy manufactured groups from the '90s now, anyway.

Houstonian Jen in Baltimore Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:25 PM EST

Stephen, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Stephen Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 08:41 PM EST

As a fan of R&B, I was hoping Nick would go solo. I mean, can you get any blacker? (Sry if that came out as racist, meant ti as a joke).

Brianna Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 08:19 PM EST

Has anyone SEEN Nick Carter recently? The guy has lost almost 50 lbs! Frankly not bad before, he is GORGEOUS now. Whereas the Backstreet Boys were the only group I loved when I was a teenager, I've expanded to many MANY music groups since that time. But I always listen to BSB. Their harmonies are so wonderful and the songs so much fun.

cranky Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 07:46 PM EST

There is not enough not caring in the whole world to adequately represent how much I do not care.

hugmonster Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 07:17 PM EST

Hey, I care. I love BSB because even though their music wasn't deep, it was really enjoyable pop music. There are few groups out there who consistently put out music that makes me smile and sing along like BSB. I remember my friends making fun of BSB and "Incomplete", but after a few weeks, they always sang along to it in the car. I can't wait to hear the CD even though it will be different without Kevin. Is it August 27th (so I can hear "Inconsolable") or October 30th yet?

JuJuBee Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 07:13 PM EST

Backstreet's BACK- ALright! LOL.
I am sad to say I am not a loyal BSB fan.. I jumped ship to NSYNC a long time ago. But I have to say this new single deserves a chance.. If Hey Baby and all the other crap can make it into daily rotation so can another BSB song. AND Vh-1 is my favorite... I can't wait to see Man band..

sarah Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 06:04 PM EST

They should have bowed out with dignity like N Sync. OR at least changed their name. I mean, Backstreet BOYS? Shoot Kevin probably HAD to leave because he's almost 40 and didn't want to participate in false advertising.

JK Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 05:54 PM EST

I personally can't wait to hear it! If it weren't for them I never would have gotten into my now lifelong interest in all different types of music. I'm glad to finally see an article mentioning them without making fun of them or their style of music.

Jen Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 05:38 PM EST

I am uberly excited about this album! I mean these guys were the originals of 90s boy bands and they're the last ones left. You got to give them credit for that. I chose to care about the new BSB album. And by the way, you need to update your pic of them, they are way hotter now than they were back then!

Sarah Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

Oh, and Nick was by far the cutest Backstreet Boy back in the day, but he didn't age too well, not like Justin anyways. Wow, I'm 26 and I still talk about them like I'm 16 again!

Sarah Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 05:09 PM EST

I will always get excited for a Backstreet Boys cd. It's been that way since the very first one came out. I could never choose between NSync and the Backstreet Boys, I loved them both!

mary Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 05:04 PM EST

I agree that Kevin was the best-looking one. He probably is not participating because he and his wife just had their first baby a couple of weeks ago. If that's the reason, that makes him even sexier.

Todd Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

Um Kristen...what's a zune?

Kristen Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 04:22 PM EST

YAY! Backstreet's back! I wonder how they'll sound without Kevin though- Boys II Men was never the same after their bass voice had to quit. Oh well, I'll still listen. I'm sure the CD will be thrown on my Zune to add to their other CDs- and I'm equally sure I'll be made fun of for it. Which I admit..is deserved. Sigh.

Peggy Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 04:16 PM EST

Every time I listen to "Incomplete" (which is embarrassingly often), I attempt to recreate Nick Carter's raw emotion at the gas station, but I never quite manage.

EP Sato Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:57 PM EST

Wow do those guys look like a poor man's version of NKOTB. Too bad none of these guys seems to have a more talented younger brother like Donny Wahlberg did. I'd say the best thing to come out of NKOTB was Marc Wahlberg...

As for Backstreet? Well, that story about one of the dudes going into rehab was pretty entertaining.

The boy band era seems pretty dead and buried, but why not give it a shot? The Monkees made an unexpected comeback thanks to Nick at Nite, maybe these fellas have some hope too?

kats Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:43 PM EST

Nick Carter was cute once upon a time before he succumbed to the curse of Paris Hilton but he never has seemed to fully recover from that fiasco. Was interesting watching his family's show. Gotta love those fame-mongering parents, it always works out so good for the kids. Are you listening Dina?

Anyway, BSB had a couple of good songs. I'll check it out before writing them off.

Court Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:34 PM EST

Well crap. Kevin was the only one I found even remotely attractive. I never cared for their music--I always liked N Sync better.

Leave it to Vh1--they are beginning to specialize in celebrity trainwrecks for our entertainment--I love Surreal Life and Celebrity Fit Club for some reason (Screech is suck a d***!), and the Scott Baio show is ridiculously addictive. I will totally watch this.

Vivi Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

First of all, a big WTF to VH1's "Man Band". But I am so there...that is gonna be one FUNNY ASS show. Unintentional comedy at its finest.
Anywho, BSB is back? I'm torn. I absolutely ADORE them but them coming back sans Kevin is gonna feel kinda weird. I mean, me personally, I didn't really care much for him but hey, he is still a BSBer. Oh well, let's see how this turns out.
Long live BSB!!!
