Still more 'Sopranos' aftermath

Steven_l Three more items that indicate no loss of interest in The Sopranos, more than two weeks after the series ended:

• First, the hoaxster behind the nutty "Nikki Leotardo" theory about the final sequence, a clearly bogus interpretation that circulated all over the 'Net in the hours after the finale aired, has finally come clean.

• Second, over the weekend, I had occasion to dine at Holsten's, the Bloomfield, N.J. ice cream parlor/diner where the final scene was filmed. (Even tried — and failed — to parallel park in the spot across the street where Meadow struggled to squeeze her car.) The place is much smaller than it appeared on TV (it's one long, narrow room that seats maybe 40 people, tops), there are no Journey-blasting jukeboxes on the tabletops (those were just props), and the onion rings are decent but not all they're cracked up to be. (The ice cream, however, which is made on the premises, is excellent.) Still, I had to order the rings, as did everyone else in the joint, which was full of tourists snapping pictures of themselves sitting in the Soprano family's booth and buying commemorative Holsten's/Sopranos T-shirts. (The flow of tourist dollars is surely silencing the local naysayers who didn't want the Mob drama to film in their burg.) Clearly, this malt shop is going to be a shrine to which Sopranos fans will make pilgrimages for years to come.

• Finally, Steven Van Zandt (pictured) has emerged from Silvio's coma to return to two of his many day jobs: advocate for unsigned rock bands and columnist for Billboard. In an editorial last week, Little Steven urged directors of TV commercials to use more unsigned rockers in their ad soundtracks. Which raises the question: How many of you have ever been turned on to an unfamiliar musical act because you heard their tune in an ad? And how many of you have purchased a song because you liked it in a commercial? Show of hands, please, below.

I loved that Mitsubishi ad featuring "Start the Commotion" by The Wiseguys.

Thanks, Jen O! I couldn't help but mention that a while back, a Grey's Anatomy commercial featured James "Laid". The song immediately brought back memories of college and I had to have it on my iPod. New artists or old artists can hook you on commercials!

Hem
Pink Moon - VW
'Hello Goodbye' in Target ad
Deep Forest - VW

noel: apparently "new shoes" was in a commercial for hilton hotels.

also, here's a super awesome site for music in commercials: http://www.songtitle.info/

RCM Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 08:38 AM EST

The iTunes ads made Black Eyed Peas and Jet. After the Target "Man with the Bag" Christmas commercial, that song became my xmas party anthem. Or the Teddybears "I'm a punk rocker" Cadillac ad.

noel Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:27 AM EST

I'm crazy about Paolo Nutini's "New Shoes" after hearing it in a commercial. I had no idea who he was but I could not stop singing the song. I now love Paolo's music, but I can't recall what the commercial was for. Does anyone know?

Gabriel Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

I'll always be grateful to DeBeers for introducing me to Cat Powers - now if they'd only release her version of the Cat Stevens song she covers!

Mavis Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 03:00 PM EST

A lot for me: Jerk It Out by Ceasars (Coke Cola?), Molly's Chamber by Kings of Leon (VW), Do What you Want by OK Go (JC Pennys), Friday Night in Philadelphia by Pepper's Ghost (local ad), Diamonds & Guns by Transpants (can't recall what ad). And I even found Wake Up by Arcade Fire because of a u2 concert. There have been tons of others too. I guess it shows how infuential advertising is on me!

Adri Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 02:09 PM EST

Ran to download Surfin' on a Rocket by Jet and Picture Book by the Kinks after seeing them in ads :)

LisaMama Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 01:35 PM EST

I downloaded Beautiful Life by Fisher because of the Toyota commercial.

David D Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

I immediately tracked down "Half Acre" by Hem after I saw that exquisite "good deeds" ad for Liberty Mutual insurance.

Richard Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

I haven't hunted down music from ads, but I think I should start. I always get that song from the Geico ad, where the caveman is on the moving sidewalk in the airport, in my head. Hopefully the TV show will have such inspired music. lol

Ep Sato Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 12:27 PM EST

Forgot this crucial one. How many people have discovered "Toots and the Maytals" now that their track "Funky Kingston" is constantly played over the ads for "Inked"? I have been into these guys since childhood but know of folks who just discovered this 40+ year old band as a result of an ad.

Doobie doo!

Joslyn Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

I love the Outback Steakhouse song, but never got around to looking up the original song - thanks for the info, Erin! As for me, I discovered the Fratellis after Flathead was used in the iPod ads and love that whole album. I also bought the Junior Senior album after VH1 used Move Your Feet in a promo spot. Overall though, I would say TV shows (Veronica Mars, the OC, Grey's Anatomy, etc) are where I've discovered most of my current favorite bands. Funny enough, Oh My and I Turn My Camera on were both used on VM, though I don't know if the commercials came first or not.
And where can I get the version of Downtown that's in the Visa commercial? That's a song I would totally pay money for.

Delboy Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 12:18 PM EST

The Kinks' "Picturebook" after the HP ad a year or 2 ago.

GeeMoney Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

I bought "Starry Eyed Surprise" when was in that car commercial, like 5 or 6 years ago. That song ROCKS!

jen o. Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

i was working at a dot-com called cdnow when the vw "pink moon" commercial hit. our email servers were overloaded with people asking who the artist was. our customer service department actually created a template to respond to the volume of inquiries. we knew that people were buying the album because we'd include a link in the email response, and could track the purchase. requests for the songs from other commercials started flooding in, too. we eventually created a "boutique" that featured songs in commercials, which was really popular. commercials definitely help open artists to new audiences. i don't have a problem with that. i DO have a problem with commercials changing the song for the sake of the commercial message. that doesn't happen so much anymore, but i started a youtube playlist of those kinds of commercials: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=2B47C96B4F728420

Scott H. Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

I tracked down T. Rex's "20th Century Boy" after first hearing it in a car ad, and it made me a huge fan of a band I had only known as a one-hit wonder before. Marc Bolan rules!

Rev. O.J. Flow Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

Songs that I know offhand caught my attention and resulted in a purchase:

"Pink Moon," Nick Drake
"Surfing on a Rocket," Air

I'm all for the trend because radio clearly sucks now, and most ad agencies use these songs in a respectful manner.

Chris Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 10:24 AM EST

I heard Mellowdrone's "Oh My" in a Nissan ad (I think that is what it was for). I then heard the same song on an indy radio station the next day and was able to find out who it was by on the radio website. I ended up buying their cd, "Box". I LOVE IT!

I highly recommend it!

Jenn Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 10:22 AM EST

I bought the Ringside's CD after I heard their song "Struggle" in a Pontiac ad. The Verizon "chocolate" ad inspired me to find Lady Sovereign.

Robert Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 09:51 AM EST

I bought an Alexi Murdoch album after I herd it on A Commercial. And have done it for many more songs.

klo Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 09:43 AM EST

I have discovered tons of music from commercials...ones that come to mind, the Nick Drake VW song, Breathe, No Sleep tonight (think that was a Motorola commercial) J. Ralph 1 million miles (also VW commercial - the one where the guy trys to stop the wedding) bought the whole CD that time...there are more, some Nissan commercials I think too...

Ep Sato Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 09:00 AM EST

Steve Van Zandt is awesome! His guest column in EW a while back gave a great send up of garage rock and explained the UK rock phenom of the 60's like no one else can.

Regarding the question about music and ads, where do I begin? I bought the Wiseguys after that "start the commotion" car commercial. I knew Hepcat had released an album after they played over a Heineken ad. Hearing Franz Ferdinand's 40 over a Rollergirls episode convinced me to buy their cd, and my buddy bought Jet's album after they were in the ipod ad.

Since those are just off the top of my head, it seems that Mr. Van Zandt is one fella who is on the money. That makes him a good earner and a goodfella.

Now let me introduce you to this friend of ours...

PS I knew that Nikki Leotardo stuff was BS from the get go and still believe Chase was trying to show us how life on the Sopranos continues, even after the show ended.

Tom Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 08:52 AM EST

Hey Rob C - the song in the Apple iPhone spot is called "Perfect Timing (This Morning)" by Orba Squara. Their full album is being sold on iTunes. It's great! I tracked it down and bought it.

Dana Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 08:49 AM EST

I'm LOVE discovering music from ads. First, there was Nick Drake from the VW ads. Then, there was Telepopmusik's "Breathe" from their Mitsubishi ads. Next, there was Spoon's "I Turn My Camera On" from the Jaguar ads. Basically - car ads provide great music.

Legna Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 08:43 AM EST

I downloaded two Heartless Bastards songs from iTunes after hearing "All This Time" on Cinemax's spring/summer preview ad.

Daniel Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 06:40 AM EST

I bought Running with your eyes closed by the Mojave 3, but I can't remember what the commercial was for. A car, or Target, maybe.

Honeybee Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 05:43 AM EST

I have Badly Drawn Boy's "Possibilities" on my ipod because of its use in the Target campaign. I knew of Nick Drake before the famouse VW commericial, but the ad prompted me to buy his collection.

darthjer Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 03:38 AM EST

Da Da Da.

All I have to say for you to know that you or someone that you love bought it.

Nix Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 10:25 PM EST

I also got "Pink Moon" after that VW ad. On another tack, I also got "Let Your Love Flow" after I think an ad for ... Pier 1? I dunno, it was long ago, like the mid-90s or something.

Marisa Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 09:10 PM EST

I downloaded the Fratelli's music after hearing their itunes add. Basically most ipod adds turns someone I know onto a new artist. (like Jerk it Out by the Ceasars had our German exchange student singing it in the hallways for weeks).
Its always refreshing to hear an artist I don't know on commercials.

Matthew Lingo Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 08:58 PM EST

There's this band called Sleepy Rebels, their song was in a Penny's Father's Day commercial, it got me so obsessed with the band that I am now in their top 8 on myspace. Today, incidentally, their first album became available for purchase on snocap (coming to itunes and other digital retailers within a month). Please check them out.

PS: The song from the ad was Kaleidoscope

Sean Collins-Smith Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 08:14 PM EST

Apple uses some good stuff for their iPod commercials (unless it has to do with ultra popular music like The Beatles, U2, etc.)

katiejane Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 07:53 PM EST

"Ice Cream" by New Young Pony Club on an HP printer commercial, I belive.

Jay Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 07:45 PM EST

Nick Drake would still be languishing in obscurity if not for that great VW commercial. First time I saw it, I tracked down who sang it and ended up buying all of Drake's CDs the next day.

Matthew Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 07:37 PM EST

That table in Holsten's is going to become like the "When Harry Met Sally..." table in Katz's ["I'll have what she's having...].

I'm dying to go there.
NEED TO.

RobC Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 07:31 PM EST

The acoustic medley for the Apple iPhone has been an item of interest, but I haven't heard/read if that is a real song or who performed it.

jeet Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 07:30 PM EST

I'm not ashamed to say I've discovered lots of music I love through advertisements.

There was the use of The Hives' "Main Offender" in an infamous lingerie ad featuring Kylie Minogue. The song was so good that at some point I started watching that commercial for the song rather than for the sight of Kylie writhing on a mechanical bull.

There was also the use of Kings of Leon's "Molly's Chambers" in a Volkswagen commercial and an embarrassing amount of big beat techno from the late '90s.

LP Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 07:23 PM EST

Recently ordered Joshua Radin's version of Only You (originally by Yaz) after hearing it in a JC Penney's Mother's Day commercial. I'm a new mom and the song and ad brought tears to my eyes. Yes, I'm a cheeseball.

Erin Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 07:11 PM EST

OK, I will totally admit that I was hooked by Of Montreal in the Outback Steakhouse ads, and yes, I downloaded Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games because of it...Shameful I know.
