Mimi in a bottle

Mariah_l Let the record show that I am a huge Mariah Carey fan. At her 2003 Charmbracelet tour, she walked past my row and I cried for 30 seconds (stopping only after I saw the horrified glances from my friends). And last September, when I got an email notifying me that I had won front row seats to her The Adventures of Mimi tour, I tracked down the fan club publicist to make sure that it wasn't a cruel joke. (It wasn't — I was thisclose to Mimi as she hit high note after high note). So a part of me rejoiced when I learned that Mariah will be releasing her own fragrance — called M by Mariah Carey.

As someone who owns an "I heart MC" tank top , two Honey B. Fly t-shirts, an HBF camo hat, and a fan club membership card (really), I feel conflicted. And I must say, the packaging is adorable — a floral-shaped purple bottle with a butterfly on top. But for you, PopWatchers, I've dug deep — past my MC love — to pose this question: Do we really need another celebrity fragrance?

Among Mimi's competitors in the perfumery are purported rival J.Lo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyonce, and Hilary Duff. Not to mention, her fragrance is fresh off the heels of Prince’s 3121. There’s no word yet on what her fragrance will smell like. (What is the scent of staying power?)

You buying, PopWatchers? I'm not one for bottled fame, and I haven't worn perfume since Ralph by Ralph Lauren, but I just might have to have that cute bottle.

Pete Sun, Sep 30, 2007 at 08:56 PM EST

i like both mariah carey and madonna. Mariah Carey should have come up with a different name though, M by Madonna came out a long time ago and now she is just using the name. Both artists are great though. Madonna's tour was the highest grossing female tour of all time, no easy feat. Mariah's last album was great, lots of really cool tracks. Both know what they are doing, and both are very different women. The name she chose is unfortunate, but I'll just judge the smell, not the name.

eddie Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 05:57 PM EST

Here we go again: MARIAH, MARIAH, MARIAH!
To all MC haters, eat this out! We love MC, she's fab & a true Diva.

I'm so looking forward to her next album & concert!!! I can't wait til she beats The Beatles for the Artist with the most # 1 hits in the Billboard list! HAIL TO THE QUEEN!

smelly cow Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 07:08 AM EST

another desperate effort by Mariah to topple JLO. Please Mariah, lay off on anything related to Beauty and Fashion. You just dont have the power! period!

For Jimmy Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 07:20 PM EST

You're gonna by the perfume just to have? LOL wow Why you just want to have a woman's perfume bottle? Because it's by Mariah? LOL. You have no life.

Jimmy Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 12:31 PM EST

Everett, your post made me laugh. I plan on buying the perfume, not to wear, just to have, people can say what they want about how it will just be fags who will buy it, or they can say she is unoriginal for naming her perfume "M by Mariah Carey" copying Madonna's "M by Madonna" clothing line, someone said that is highly successful, tell me where can you buy it at, everytime I go into a department store I never see "M by Madonna" clothing line, so please tell me where it is sold so I can go see for myself just how successful, or not, it really is!

Sam Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 12:06 PM EST

I just want to point out the irony in all the MADONNA FANS calling ANYONE a FAG! LMFAO...get real and ease up on that hateraid....ya drag queens!

Mariah should be happy she got all these fools trying to tear her down. It only means that she's doing something right, otherwise there'd be no reason to attack her. Hagdonna fans just mad that she's become so irrelevent in the states that's she's about to have to jump on the pop/r&b/hiphop train that MARIAH PIONEERED.

Mariah has overcome the lowest of the lows...all you stans need to worry about how Madonna's gonna overcome that WACK rap episode instead of worrying about Mariah's projects.

NEXT! --------->

Michele Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 10:25 AM EST

Um, duh. Mariah. Nuff said. I will definitely be buying it because she's amazing. I could care less about other celebrities. It's about time she came out with a fragrance. She's awesome!

MaRiAh Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 09:58 AM EST

omg I HAVE to have that perfume!! Hey, it's M by MARIAH CAREY! So buy it!

David Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 08:08 AM EST

Go Mimi!! Go 2007 Album!! Go Grammy Payback!!

Jeremiah Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 04:35 AM EST

I definitely think there's room in the industry for Mariah's perfume. Mariah is a household name after becoming one of the most note-worthy artists in the business. People own her cds, magazines and dvs, why not add the fragrance to that collection as well?

Ken Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 02:55 AM EST

will definitely buy this perfume! love mariah! go mimi! ;p

YouLackIntelligence Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 01:09 AM EST

Can't wait. And just who are these haters saying that MC puts out crap? People that love rock music and think they're superior over everyone? Get a life. You'll find some lame excuse to throw a low blow to people. Mariah you rule! :D

DanS. Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:17 PM EST

Mariah, you can do SOOOO much better marketing yourself than perfume and costume jewelry. When will you FINALLY realize that your freak of an ex-husband laughs his *** off at you every time you get involved in shallow gimmickry? I thought that was what you tried to get away from with the divorce and firing your other entourages. Wake up, Mariah, and do THINGS THAT REALLY MATTER TO YOUR FANS!

OPRAH Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:34 PM EST

oh please madonna hey day is over. She has to work with R&B producers now to get a hit in the u.s. Loser!!

Giggs Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:18 PM EST

the bottle is cute!

Pips. Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 09:17 PM EST

Having you on the EW crew is like a breath of fresh air!!! I will be purchasing it. To be honest, I did not like any other celebrity perfumes, but since I'm well aware of the type of scents Mariah likes, I don't think "M" will come as a huge disappointment. And you're right, that bottle alone is a huge incentive. Package does play a large role!

Mateo Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 08:57 PM EST

its Mariah Carey!

( I love it already )

Neve Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 08:57 PM EST

Why do people compare Madonna and Mariah? Madonna is not in her league at all. Never in her wildest dreams will she be able to have the power in her voice like Mariah. Does Madonna have a perfume? I know she has a clothing line. Madonna will sell her clothing because she still has millions of fans who believe she is great. Mariah will sell her perfume because many people still love her. And she can actually sing, can't say that about Madonna.

Jayson Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 08:39 PM EST

haha..it's amazing how many people are envious of Ms.Carey. They attack the little things because when it comes to the big picture, there is nothing negative to say about her. If you don't like her, don't buy her product, but please; let's not throw stones from glass houses because jealousy is not an attractive trait.

Everett Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 07:30 PM EST

I will go, undetected, into Macy's with a female friend and smell the perfume.
I will then make that female friend purchase the perfume, for herself.
I will then make that female friend show all of her other female friend's the perfume and brag about how delicious it is and how the moment we've all waited 17 years for has finally come.
Then we will drink.
We will drink like gods.

Ray Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 07:24 PM EST

Yes, with the perfume dropping right around the holidays, this perfume is gonna sell like hotcakes, just like Mariah's albums...best of luck Mimi.
boooo to all you haters!

Jane Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 07:22 PM EST

I'm not quite sure I understand the bias against celebrity fragrances. I can confidently say that I, as an avid buyer of perfume, could care less whose name is on the bottle. What I am looking for is the perfect scent to compliment my current mood. Are celebrity fragrances not composed of the same types of perfume notes as others? I've smelled plenty of putrid "designer" fragrances in my day, and I believe there is just as much of a chance for them to turn out poorly as the celeb fragrances. People should be more open-minded and give all fragrances a fair chance before making judgements. I know I will...and I look forward to trying Ms. Carey's perfume.

On another note, I am glad that the general public as a whole does not consist of such ridiculous, fanatical children who indulge themselves in their own jealous and embittered bile. If you really want to smell like crap or go crazy, you probably don't have to look any further than your own bedroom door.

Fatima Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:55 AM EST

Honey B. Fly! You have to know Mariah well to know that. While I may not be as big of a fan as I was in 1995 as a wee second grader, I still love Mariah. And having the top selling CD of 2005 does prove she has fans still to all the naysayers.

meka Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:53 AM EST

I think it is cool that mariah is getting her own perfume it is about damm time she gets to do somthing other than music. It will be nice i think i wish her the best of luck with it i saw the bottle that it is in and i would be the first to buy it because i love her and she is totlaly amazing to me . She still got a lot of hardcore fans out there like me who will still support her .Good Luck Mimi

mariah stinky Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

seriously, a mariah perfume? she looks stinky and sweaty most of the time. who would want to smell like her? eeeewww

Paul Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 09:38 AM EST

Um...for the record, the Charmbraclet tour was in 2003. Mariah didn't tour in 2005.

ny1 Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 10:22 PM EST

oh, and "highly successful?" how bout this for a factoid: kylie minogue's clothing line is selling better in the uk than madonna's. hmmm....

ny1 Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 10:21 PM EST

the idea that mariah is borrowing ideas from madonna is laughable. trust me, mariah has better things to do than copy anything that she does. madonna fans are working VERY hard these days to bring that over-the-hill "diva" (ha) into the middle of everything.

Sally Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 09:51 PM EST

He** no we don't need ANOTHER PERFUME BY ANOTHER CELEBRITY...they're overdoing it! Besides, perfume is OUT and body mist is IN! And Bath and Bodyworks has a huge sale twice a year and that's where most women end up going.

Tim - New Brunswick, NJ Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 06:47 PM EST

I had NO IDEA that the world's best scientists were able to find a smell to match "Mimi"...10-year-old-unrefrigerated-toxic-dump-eating-fish.

Dustin Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

M by Mariah....LMAO she's so unoriginal she had to bite off of Madonna's clothing line for H and M (the highly successful M by Madonna) clothing line

sosgemini Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 04:29 PM EST

Marshmallow?

Emperor Norton Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 04:05 PM EST

Hahahahah EP Sato - the perfume market is oversaturated.

You kill me.

I don't even want to think about a person over the age of 21 buying a celebrity scent. If you're young, you should be silly and maleable and stoopid and a tool for advertisers to slap around.

But after that, please.

jason Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 04:02 PM EST

screw the perfume, i want an album stat!!lol

Jay Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

by the way, I think selling 6 million copies of The Emancipation of Mimi in the US alone represents a pretty rabid fan base....you don't have to wonder about that.

Jay Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 03:46 PM EST

I love Mariah she can do whatever she wants. Sigh....

Melissa Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 03:40 PM EST

Hmm - I was sure that celeb perfumes were bought strictly by girls sixteen and under...you know, the same genre that fell for Exclamation and/or Malibu Musk.

Ep Sato Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 03:27 PM EST

I love that every few years there's a new celeb scent on the market, yet you can still get Drakkar Noir with the same ease as in 1988.

What would make more sense is if well liked scents got celebrity endorsements that changed every few years. Like Wheaties.

Imagine, for example, that Estee Lauder's Beautiful becomes known as the "Sofia Vegarra" scent. Once she gets too well known or disapears off the map they dump her for another starlet who then becomes the "beautiful" girl.

To me this is all a sad attempt to sell more perfume, and to be frank, the market already seems a little over saturated. On the other hand, I can already picture a lot of stockings stuffed with the scent of Mimi this X-mas.

And while I dig Mariah Carey's first album and a few other of her tracks I gotta wonder if she's still got that rabid of a fanbase these days.

Mark Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 03:25 PM EST

No matter what product she "creates" it will be over-produced and air brushed just like her...

jill Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 02:47 PM EST

Her heyday is over. How could anyone still be such a big fan? No way would I shell out money for her probably overpriced perfume or her shows.

Troubledmind Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 02:37 PM EST

I tried to prevent my fingers from typing, but I lost. Hats, t-shirts, fan club, perfume...I am so scared for you. Next thing you know you'll be packing your chaps into toddler shorts and handing out Popsicles to screaming preteens on semi-national TV. It's like that ya'll, indeed.

Liza Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 02:36 PM EST

I'm sure it will stink as much as she does

Paul U. Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 01:29 PM EST

There is no way Mariah's can ever hold a candle to Electric Youth perfume. I bought it for my mom just so I could secretly wear it myself!

paige Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

M by Mariah??? how coincidental that Madonna's clothing line for H&M was called M by Madonna... couldnt she come up with a more original title?? oh wait, cant expect originality from her... here's hoping that the fragrance comes with instant craziness so you too can be a psycho just like mariah!!!

Dark Dot Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

Flee, flee, Popwatchers! Run fast and far--the apocalypse is nigh!

Trudy Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:25 PM EST

Perfume makes my eyes run so I had to stop wearing it. This is a beautiful picture of Mariah and yes, the girl can sing!

Robert Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

Mariah is awesome. Why don't they make cologne for men? I can't wait for her new album and movie. I have been a huge fan from the begining.

Rhonda Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:08 PM EST

its a gooorgeous bottle and it has a floral topnote with marshmallow and an amber musk base. now im usually against celebrity perfume, but i think mariah love defies all the standards one usually sets in terms of integrity. thats right, i saw the mariah tour and i paid 100$ to sit about 2 miles away. for 150$ i coulda been up in her face, but maybe now ill take the money i saved and SMELL JUST LIKE HER. also, who are we kidding? there is no way she wears this stuff. even if it smells awful, it would look great sitting on my dresser!

Marcy Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

I think that as long as a fragrance smells good, it will sell. If the celeb connection gets someone to try it who would not normally, that's just good marketing. Did you smell it?

Ed Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

I wear Glo by J.Lo when I go out to the club. Nobody knows who's wearing what when bodies are grinding together.

Joe C Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

Well, Bethonie, as the biggest Mimi fan on this EW site, I always support her, but I'll have to stay on the sidelines as to how good her perfume is given that I'm a male, and a single one at that, lol. Then again, maybe I could send a bottle of it to my ex. As for you, Bethonie, ya gotta support her!

Zod Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 11:22 AM EST

I think you oughta go old school and just get some of Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth perfume. It probably smells the same as Mariah's anyway.

Johnny Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

Wow, that's quite an addiction. If you want Mariah's smell, I could suggest saving your money and just going out to a field and scooping up some crap for free. I mean, anything MC puts out is crap so why not?

GeeMoney Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 11:11 AM EST

Honestly, we dont need anymore celebrities, but I don't see how that's going to stop happening anytime soon. So what's one more fragrance?
