Justin Timberlake hurts my eyes

Jun 21, 2007, 12:23 PM | by Bethonie Butler

Categories:

Justin Timberlake’s new video is hard to watch. And not in the way that his "What Goes Around" video is hard to watch, although I’m sure many of us found it difficult to watch someone so handsome make out with someone who is not us. But I’m over that.

What I’m not over, PopWatchers, is this "LoveStoned" video. My eyes hurt. There’s so much going on and yet, there’s absolutely nothing going on. All I see are lotsa pieces of Justin Timberlake and computerized argyle! (If JT was vying for geek stripes, I could have told him that his MMC days earned him a lifetime membership.)  And when we finally do see JT in his human form, he looks particularly sad. Maybe the object of his affection decided she’s not going home with him tonight. Or maybe he just watched the first part of this video.

Perhaps the only way to enjoy this clip is if you are, in fact, stoned (with, or without, the love). Let me know if I’m wrong, PopWatchers. In the meantime, I’m just going to wear sunglasses in the dark for a few minutes.

justin timberlake is everything a girl could ask for

Drizzle Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 09:49 PM EST

Justin Timberlake is not all that. I agree with the poster who said if it were not for his fame, the Ferret would not be so appealing. He can't sing. He is best known for his silly antics and relationships. Justin Timberlake is a waste of money.

Jason Bonkers Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 09:21 PM EST

Dark Dot rhymes with F*art.

Jason Bonkers Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 09:17 PM EST

Dark Dot: I don't think you are in any position to call me clumsy. I rather be Jason Bonkers than to call myself a stupid name like Dark Dot, hope you don't get stepped on. Oh by the way, have a great day.

moi Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 10:32 AM EST

jt was hot at first, his voice at times gave me chills "hot damn! but why oh why do most of his songs have to be frigging 6 minutes long!!?? and he looked like a puppy dog at the end in white. and also at the very end, like a sim character. silly jt.

Adrienne Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

I actually really liked the video until the end when he was in the white room/area/whatever. It kinda went downhill from there.

Maggs Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 02:30 PM EST

next*, on my*...ugh, stupid typo's

Maggs Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 02:29 PM EST

Awww, i thought Summer Love should have been his nexy single. I mean come on, its Summer!!! Everytime i hear that song onmy ipod or on the radio i turn it up....sigh

Jenni Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

My only complaint is that the end part of the video where he's in the grey suit isn't a feature length film... My Lord... that's the best thing I've seen onscreen EVER. Wooo!!!!

Fatima Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

Um he is supposed to be sad at the end. You must not have listened to the words. What starts out as a horndog club anthem transforms into an interlude that seems to paint a picture of the effects of casual sex. I think its quite amazing how the song changes so quickly but so smoothly. Not a great video but Justin should be getting some credit from people who are too self conscious to praise a former boy band member

Amber Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:19 AM EST

Alison---LOL I completely agree!!

No Brand Woman Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 08:25 AM EST

I didn't think it was so terrible, but it is all kinda anticlimactic. Nothing at all really happens. It's like JT phoned this one in. But I do like the song and I'm finding more and more that JT is a guilty pleasure of mine. It's not right. I'm not supposed to enjoy this kind of music! God help me, but I can't resist him! If only he weren't so handsome and didn't have such a smooth voice...

i think he was standing in front of a gigantic maxipad at the end...

beb Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 05:00 AM EST

I like where Houstonian Jen in Baltimore's was going with regards to the second half of the video -- JT's experiencing the "high" during "LoveStoned," and starting to come off it during "I Think That She Knows."

Ellipsian -- the song will be a hit with or without the video, silly. JT is the most consistent male artist on radio today.

Phil - I love you. Thank you for clearing up my confusion between this and "Until The End of Time."

Mo ZeBong Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:02 AM EST

No, that video is not enjoyable stoned. I think it gets worse every second you watch it. No, I don't think that song sounds good stoned. The whole thing is shot to hell, scrap it, next single please.

Kit-Sung Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 02:34 AM EST

Yeah, thats really a boring video. Those Hip-Hop/ Dancefloor videos where barely dressed women let everything hang out, shake their bodies and have men drool over them are much nicer, you're right Bethonie. It's much more fun to watch videos in which women are exploited!

V.M.L. Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:50 AM EST

Honestly, I find this to be the neatest video since the Gnarls Barkley one for "Crazy".

Angela Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 10:59 PM EST

You have to have ADD to watch this. Though if you have epilepsy watching this would cause a fall to the floor and massive seizure. There should a disclaimer. Also, who is the chic in the video?

Sally Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 09:53 PM EST

Mystified: Too funny! Luckily I'm way past the age where I can relate, but do women find him sexy? Do women find Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger sexy? Somebody likes them enough to go to bed with them.

RayT Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 09:12 PM EST

This is yet another great song paired with a "quick, this video needs to be submitted to MTV by 9am tomorrow morning" video. I hated it when Madonna did the exact same thing with her video for "Get Together," my favorite song off of "Confessions." No one wants to watch a 4-minute screensaver regardless of how awesome the Photoshoped-in performer is!
That being said, I do so enjoy how JT starts out doing "African-American Justin (AAJ)" in the first part of this video then segues into "Wistful, Pensive Justin (WPJ)" at the end. But is that an iceberg he's standing on? Is Justin inserting subliminal environmental awareness messages? An Inconvenient Timberlake?!

mystified Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 08:22 PM EST

Do women really find him attractive? Really? If he weren't famous, women wouldn't give the human ferret the time of day walking down the street.

Monee Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 07:54 PM EST

i love this song...but i couldn't get through the first part of the video the first 4 times i watched it. the only reason i kept going on the 5th try was the fact that i saw a picture of him in white as a preview of the video...that, and my modem didn't move fast enough for me to get to the second part. seriously justin, make a video that fits the song. we don't need big productions (What Goes Around) or lame special effects (this one...) The song rocks, the video does not.

Lorenzo Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 06:25 PM EST

If you noticed, all of his videos tell a story. Think about it:

The Beginning: "Lovestoned". Dreaming about his hooker/dancer (Scarlett Johnanesn) in world where everybody is made up of Window Media Player's visuals.

Chapter 1: "What Goes Around". After finding out that the love of his life was cheating behind his back with his best friend (Shawn Hastoy), she runs away, gets into a car and drives off. Meanwhile, Justin goes after her in his car. During the chase, Scarlett crashes into a ramp? A pile garbage? I dunno. Anyway, her flips over and over and she dies (although she has no wounds and scratches on her). After trying to revive her, he finds a CIA badge hidden between her giantic orbs. Fearing for his he runs away.

Chapter 2: "SexyBack":

....I don't have enough time nor room, so if anybody wants to finish go right ahead. Thanks!

jennifer Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 06:23 PM EST

computerized argyle? did we watch the same video?

Phil Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 05:43 PM EST

I meant to say "Summer Love" was NOT intended to be made into a video, sorry, left the word NOT out.

Also, the artistic contrast from black in the "LoveStoned" video to when the song flips to the somber "I Think That She Knows", in white is pure genius. Take all the CGI efects out & actually feel where he was going with the song, from a dark club with flashing lights, and home with the female, to the bright lights of say, a bedroom, and the direction of this video couldn't be MORe spot on!

Phil Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 05:40 PM EST

Ok kiddies, Radio 101 - "Summer Love" is the song you've been hearing NON-stop for the past 2 months, it was intended to be made into a video, a bunch of radio stations began spinning it when the warm weather started & it was kind of a hold over single until the "LoveStoned/I Think That She Knows" video was done being created & edited. "Summer Love" is JT's 4th consecutive radio airplay hit, & he's the 1st artist to achieve that feat from one album or something like that. Urban radio (R&B) is being serviced with the ballad "Until The End of Time" (where's its already a Top 20 hit) while pop stations are being serviced "LovedStoned" the 1st week of July. "LoveStoned" has been my favorite song since the cd was released last Fall & I'm glad the label is actually releasing it as a single, since pure & simple, its a dance song, which don't exactly get much love on pop stations these days. For those of you not enjoying the video, I dunno what you're stoned on, its not great, but its unique

sam Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 05:16 PM EST

Justin is mildly talented and amusing--he was better on SNL than he sings--I think maybe his fifteen minutes of overexposure are almost over. Oh, wait--he has been linked with another famous young woman--he gets a few minutes longer.

Stephen Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 04:56 PM EST

I'm confused. All I hear on the radio is "Summer Love," not this.

Ms Daisy Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 04:40 PM EST

Justin Timberlake hurts my EARS.

jason Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

yeah, it's a little different, and boring, but it sure beats the horrible "what goes around..." video. looks like it was put together in 5 minutes.

sarah Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 03:34 PM EST

The only reason Justin Timberlake hurts my eyes is because he's just so pretty. This song is my favorite off the cd. But, I liked the video where he sniped a Gap ad better. My Love. That one really entertained me for some reason. But, you know, Lovestoned isn't the song the radio stations in my city have been playing...

Houstonian Jen in Baltimore Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

I really like it, but it's not exactly original. If Michael Jackson and Prince came together and had a musical love child, it would be this song. From the catchy hook (MJ) to the funky guitar breakdown (Prince) to the weird green lights (MJ's "Rock with you" video) to the drum beats (Prince) to the dance moves (MJ & Prince).

In regards to the second half, I don't know if I would call him 'sad'. I prefer the term 'high'. He reminded me of the heroin addicts I see when I walk home. They are just stopped in the middle of the sidewalk, looking at nothing in particularly, practically dozing off while they're standing up. (I know I've been living in Baltimore for too long when people start reminding me of addicts.)

jim Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 03:05 PM EST

I liked "What Goes Around" as a song much better than this. He sings Pop better than R&B. For me, when he sings R&B, it's like he's trying to prove he's worthy.
The video was lame. Most videos lately have been lame.

Steve Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 02:54 PM EST

I swear to god...EW is run by 13 year old girl's lately

Jaclyn Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

Aw, I thought it was cool. The second half was a little boring, I suppose, but still pretty. I liked it.

Troubledmind Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

The concept of this piece of visual indulgence isn't so bad. The object of my rejection is. That MonkeyBoy needs to take his whiny blank-eyed soul self and go away. The ending is so pitiful, it makes me want to slap a baby bottle in his mouth and push his stroller down the stairs.

Lyle H. Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

The second part isn't sad so much as boring. It put me to sleep which is good since I had a headache from the first part of the video

Dark Dot Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 01:17 PM EST

Jason is bonkers, indeed. Not to mention nonsensical and clumsy with metaphors.

ceej Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 01:16 PM EST

Looks like the next generation of Windows Media Player.

Ellipsian Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 01:11 PM EST

GeeMoney's right: "LoveStoned/I Think That She Knows" is TOTALLY the best song off of the album, but this video doesn't do it justice. I think it's creative to a point, but it's not gonna help the song achieve the hit status that it deserves. Damn.

"LoveStoned/I Think That She Knows" Version 2, anyone?

saybo Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

I'm with TsuKata, I've watched enough visualizations on Windows Media Player, this isn't so hard to watch or understand. I've thought in the past that songs should contain their own visualizations so the musicians control the images, this video is doing that.

I also agree with others that it doesn't make sense when everything slows down and we see the normal JT. I was waiting for Will Ferell to show up as the Architect (remember the MTV movie awards Matrix parody with JT?).

Sarah Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

I enjoyed this video, cause if I had to watch another video with "acting" like in the "What Goes Around" video, I may have had to stop liking JT. What would have been a better concept for this video?

SuzieC Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:47 PM EST

It looks like WMP on crack to me.
It's an ok song but that video gave me a headache. It's creative though.

K E W Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

Ummmm...welcome to the Matrix? During the last minute I was waiting for Neo to burst in and demand answers!

Jason Bonkers Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:37 PM EST

Why isn't Justin Timberlake a has-been yet? The man is a real enigma. He is a puzzle best left unsolved.

KWampus Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:33 PM EST

Wow, that was a long couple of minutes. I will say this, that was no "D*ck in a Box."

Nancy Walker Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:29 PM EST

I don't understand this former mickey's boy appeal. Really, what is so special about Justin Timberlake?

ElChupacabra Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:28 PM EST

It actually looks like the opening sequence to a James Bond film to me -- one where the plot revolves around a mix tape that happens to contains the names of all the spys in MI6 or something. That last minute of the song and video where everything slows down has got to go though.

Janice Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

Yeah - I'm in the camp that thinks the video is craptacular, and what's frustrating is that it was probably very expensive to make with all that CGI. I just don't think it's very creative and it doesn't do justice to what is a really good song - one of my favorite tracks off the album.

TsuKata Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

I like it. Most people listen to music with the visualizer that WMP does these days, and I think the video plays to that. It also basically makes the music the focus instead of some scantily clad babe, by making the visual be a representation of the music's construction.

Vance Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

Well, oh well, whatever. Who watches videos other than on youtube anyways anymore? But yeah. this is the best song on the album. Im actually surprised they are releasing it though.

Jenn Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 11:45 AM EST

Yes, this isnt what we all expected for yet another amazing song off of this CD, however what other videos have you seen like it...so it looks like you're watching media player for the first bit...the I think she knows half is..I dont know, theres just something about it that gives me goosebumps. I actually really like this video..no sexyback, but still intreguing.

Vicky Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 11:44 AM EST

Ehh. Who really wants to watch that over and over again? Plus, being "LoveStoned" doesn't sound terribly romantic. "Baby, I'm lovestoned for you." "Ummm...thanks?"

Elizabeth Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 11:39 AM EST

I don't think it's that bad. At least he's not just standing in a club with a bunch of girls with their butts hanging out of a thong. I respect him for giving us that much.

Elizabeth Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 11:38 AM EST

I don't think it's that bad. At least he's not just standing in a club with a bunch of girls with their butts hanging out of a thong. I respect him for giving us that much.

GeeMoney Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 11:31 AM EST

Don't get me wrong - I'm a die hard JT fan... and this video is a complete disappointment - basically it sucks. What makes it worse is that "LoveStoned/I Think That She Knows" is the best song off of his album, and he pairs it with some craptastic video. Me so sad. :(
