Snap Judgment: 'John From Cincinnati'

Jun 11, 2007, 01:45 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Television

John_l As Austin Nichols' titular manboy (pictured) kept blabbing on the premiere of John From Cincinnati last night, "Some things I know, and some things I don't." And one thing I know is that people are either going to love or hate HBO's new supernatural surfing series from co-creator David Milch (NYPD Blue, Deadwood). Indeed, editor at large Ken Tucker gave the show an A- in EW's most recent issue, while I found myself rooting for a shark attack to wipe out its entire lot of characters before the episode's end. (The better to force HBO to bring back Valerie Cherish, I suppose, and maybe for some genius studio exec to greenlight Rebecca De Mornay in Hand That Rocks the Cradle II.)

The thing is, I'm not one of those TV viewers who always need to know exactly where a series is taking them. I may be the last blogger alive who's perfectly happy with the number of concrete answers he's gotten during three seasons of Lost. But to me, the premiere of John From Cincinnati was intentionally obtuse and unrelentingly unpleasant, and the characters' motivations seemed more a product of writers trying way too hard to be "edgy" than any kind of genuine desire to tell a story.

Some of the questions I couldn't get past: Why would Mitch (Bruce Greenwood) assume his sudden ability to levitate (ugh) meant he had a brain tumor? Wouldn't Shaun's guardian grandparents have given at least momentary pause before letting him surf with his exceedingly skanky dad (Brian Van Holt), who'd just admitted to shooting up drugs earlier in the day? Were the writers seriously aiming for wacky comic hijinks during that scene where the suicidal gay man recalled how he'd been violated with a broom handle as a sixth grader? Is there a teenager alive who'd make fast friends with a creepy, blank-faced twentysomething who appears out of nowhere, is befuddled by basic activities like shaking hands or shutting car doors, and starts parroting everyone else's conversations?

Maybe I'm just not patient enough to appreciate what Milch & Co. are offering, or maybe John From Cincinnati is the perfect storm of pretentious storytelling, faux-shocking dialogue, and hammy overacting (I've got my eyes on you, Ed O'Neill!). Let the debate begin in the comments section below!

These are the things broken people dream of. The last gasp of hope when all acceptable "miracles" have failed fled or never appeared. The childless mother, the motherless child, the widow, the junky, the crook and the fallen king...The Brokenhearted...If only there were really a JFC.

I think that John From Cincinnati is one of the most unique and challenging shows ever shown on cable TV. Enough with the game shows, reality shows, CSI's ad nauseam, family format shows. I grew up watching Leave It to Beaver and Marcus Welby, and I also loved comic books. But that was decades go... Anyone who watched the show only one time a week was making a mistake. The wild dialogue and kooky characters demand your full attention and a free flowing imagination. The show certainly "goes where no man has gone before."

Let's hope that it will get its second wind as Startrek did and come back to us in the near future. Or maybe Milch will resurrect Deadwood?

Yea and our taxes will be less next year...

Whats the name of the song playing in epi 2 in the tent? (Sean prepares for the competition)

The Bob Dylan song is "Series of Dreams"

Skip Messier Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 04:59 PM EST

First I'm upset that HBO, generally the leader in quality cable programming, unwisely cancelled John From Cincinatti, one of the most unusual yet one of the best shows, in my opinion that HBO has created. For the life of me I'm going crazy trying to find the name of the Bob Dylan song(at least I think it was as who else has a voice as grizzled-sounding as that)that was played during the scene where Sean and John come surfing back into everyones lives after "disappearing". Any help would be appreciated.

dan Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 04:56 PM EST

anyone know the name of the song that was played in the trailer? you can find it in the video section on hbo.com, its driving me crazy, someone please help!!

Steve Mon, Jul 23, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

What was the title of the Nina Simone song that closed the most recent installment of 'John From Cincinnati?

Kenny White Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 12:25 PM EST

This show is great if you are patient enough and dilligent enough to listen. Sometimes you have to rewind and listen multiple times, but it's worth the effort. It's like a really good book. Basically we have a modern day story of Jesus and his 12 apostles. Right now the fun is figuring out which characters are which apostles. I'm not some religious freak, in fact the exact opposite, but that is definitely what is going on with this show. Milch told us during John's sermon on Sunday night where God came from. He cam from the first words in the cave drawings of ancient man. This show is so great because it doesn't pander to the least common denominator. The question is will it draw enough deep thinkers to stay on the air. I hope so.

joef Sun, Jul 8, 2007 at 01:36 AM EST

Recycling? At the end of last week's episode we heard Feeling Good by Muse. This is an obscure cover of a terrific Nina Simone song that was used in a promo for Six Feet Under, which you can catch on Youtube. Sorry to say that being reminded of Six Feet Under makes John seem even more disappointing.

chloe Sat, Jul 7, 2007 at 11:33 PM EST

Honestly, all the people who are complaing that the characters are "over acting" and are "not easily believed" you obviously have not once been to a San Diego beach town. I am a native San Diagan, and I practically go to the beach every weekend. People in IB, as well as many other beach towns, are whacky. Meth and other drugs, as well as alcohol are a huge contribution to the crazy people who live in places like IB. Beach people, just in general, tend to be characters. ALSO, just to add a fact to this, San Diego is the meth capital. So all the characters DO IN FACT MAKE SENSE. The show is interesting unlike most of the played out crap that is on HBO such as "a magazine writer trying to make it in New York City" or "four single women trying to find the right guy for them." THIS IS DIFFERENT. FINALLY! You can actually use your brain and engage in the story, listen, watch, absorb the creativity and eccentricity of this wonderful treasure of a show. This show makes my sundays. IT ROCKS.

Liz from IB Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

Enjoying the show, ESPECIALLY the music. Thanks to all who've posted names and artists. Currently chillen to Kasabian- "Sunrise light flies".

Hey.... I've got a cadillac from the Avon Lady! She's a very nice lady.

There was a Steve Winwood song in one of the episodes. What was it?

AWC Wed, Jul 4, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

The name of the song from episode 2 is "Con Te Partiro" sung by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli.

SJB Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 07:32 AM EST

Where'd my reply to Hal's Jun 26 query go?

SJB Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 06:29 PM EST

Looked like an OTH radar antenna to me. Did you spot that the 'scope was inclined about 15 degrees above the horizon when John was in C/U?

Kirk Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 09:03 AM EST

I watched the first 3 hours all at once, which is the I would recommend -- yes, almost ditched it 30-mins into Ep 1, but last 10-mins brought it all back perfectly. This is good stuff. Stick with it and enjoy thinking again. What's that place John saw in the pay-telescope on the pier?

SJB Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 05:45 AM EST

John Lee Hooker - Boogie Chillin'

Duane Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 12:22 AM EST

This is why reality TV rules the American air waves... No one wants to think. If it's not pre-digested people want to turn the channel. To answer the one question... Mitch thought he had a tumor because his character always views the bleak side of life.

The "come back"? There is no "friends" curse. They all just suck as actors.

Deadwood Fan Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 02:31 PM EST

Great show, I just hope hbo does not cancel before we find out what the hell is actully happening. You need to watch several times to catch some things.

Good to see some of the Deadwood actors in this, since Deadwood was canceled for it.

Hal Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 05:45 AM EST

What song was at the beginning of episode 3? It was a classical song by a female singer. The guy in the car at the beginning of the episode was listening to it and responded by saying "that's where the blind daego is supposed to come in". Please let me know. Thanks.

herk Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 10:11 PM EST

Good comments here! Thanks for all of the music credits I can't wait to get out of here and to where ever I can get all of the music. Really want to hear the other cuts too. For everyone that thinks this show sux; chill out, your "Idol" will return one day and you again will feel whole. In the meantime let those of us that appreciate something beyond that "reality" pablum. Let us enjoy a show that makes us think and not go numb!! This is one of the first shows that I have seen in a long time that is not predictable and/or so "lowest common denominator". I am stunned at the amount of quality entertainment available to the seemingly few people left in this country that would rather think about the story and the whys and whats and the "I didn't see THAT coming" stuff than be spoon fed by some "writer" in some corporate studio office cubicle! Besides in the end it is JUST entertainment, not anything more than that so don't get so sideways about it like it's something important. :-/

who was the blues singer whenever john told kai to see god

wAyNe Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 09:57 PM EST

This might be off the beaten path a but here, but what was the classical song that was playing while that dude was sitting in front of the hospital? Was it from Phantom Of The Opera or something?

What is the blues song when John tells Kai "See God Kai?"

Nate Sun, Jun 24, 2007 at 10:02 PM EST

What was the song at end of episode #3? It sounded a bit like Muse....any help?

sharshar Sun, Jun 24, 2007 at 02:10 PM EST

OK, I REALLY liked this...I think we have been too programmed by watching network tv to expect things to develop and be resolved in 22-44 minutes or less--or this reality tv crap. Sometimes real life goes kind of slow or lags as we work through things...and then sometimes it all comes at you at once. I felt like I was getting to see inside the lives of someone else--almost similar to watching the Sopranos.

The music presented the perfect backdrop to most scenes--the cinematography was awesome. I think with where they have started, there can be a lot of places to go, and I plan to watch.

KWhit Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 06:44 PM EST

This show is great. I actually enjoyed it. Its different. Sorry if its not another medical drama. Its plot is a little shakey but the excellent writting makes up for it.

OGUNZ Tue, Jun 19, 2007 at 10:16 PM EST

I have spent years and years watching shows and movies that protray actors that are NOT the real performers when it comes to the action. Whether it is Martial Arts, a sport, dancing, or ANYTHING .... but you retards dont realize is that Shawnee and the other surfer that works the shop with short blond hair are REAL professional surfers .... so their acting isnt perfect, WHO CARES !! It just adds to the show's bizarre nature.

I am SICK AND TIRED of watching actors taking credit for all the stunt doubles hard work on film. It is refreshing to see actors that ACTUALLY perform their own beautiful talents on screen.

OGUNZ Tue, Jun 19, 2007 at 09:42 PM EST

This show is amazing. All you haters that bash it are nothing but rift-raft. There is more imagination and ingenuity that is put into this show and it takes more than a standard couch potatoe moron to realize what is going on. The symbolism, the foreshadowing, and the mystique make this show as exciting as the final episodes of the Sopranos. Go get em HBO, keep em coming. Sidebar = the music is off the charts .....

FOUND IT! The song playing while Shaun was preparing for his heat is 'TIC' by awesome English band KAVA KAVA. Chocolate Fireguard Records and itunes. The flow is like: 'There is a deadlock, you make me theorize about the nature of thinking about the way you do...' Amazing singer. Apparently they played SXSW, China too. Love the show

steven Tue, Jun 19, 2007 at 10:47 AM EST

I'd also like to know the song playing while Shaun was preparing for his heat (something like "deadlock"?). I can't find any references online so far.

Love the show!

Natalie,
The title song is Johnny Appleseed by Joe Strummer...

laura Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 04:51 PM EST

I love this show, one of the better things on television. I'm also interested in hearing more about the music; does anyone know name of the song from the shows opening credits?

Ryan Flaherty Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 12:31 PM EST

I am still looking for the song when shaun was waxing his board.

Josh Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

Thanks for the music info - I like the show although the best part to date is the music and cinematography, the story with John should take shape soon if HBO expects people to keep watching. Just my humble opinion.

Natalie Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 03:05 AM EST

I would love to know both which band sings the opening song for the show (apropos given the recent bee death mystery; intentional allusion?) as well as which band sings the song that played while they waxed the boards in Eps.2 (seems I'm not alone)? Considering this feedback, they ought to have music credits, yes? I know it's early in the show's season but having no music info on HBO's site appears to have been a mistake - take note, Johnny & Reinhold (in charge of the show's "soundtrack"), as you've gone done good.

barjack Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 01:25 AM EST

The song during the closing credits of episode 2 is "TV on the Radio" and the song title is "Staring at the Sun".

I also would love to know what the name of the song was when shaun was getting his board ready in the tent it was dope. I am not an LA guy but damm it made me want to wax up a board and surf I would love the heads up on a song title

i guarantee this show is only going to get better. the song at the end of episode 2 is "starting at the sun" by tv on the radio.

how can all of you out there bash a show after only two episodes...of course we are not going to have any idea whats going on they are just at the introduction stage, however i already love it and cannot wait for the next episodes to come...ps sun-rise-night-flies isnt the right song i like the one at the end of episode 2 but still cant find it

Dreadscale Fri, Jun 15, 2007 at 10:03 PM EST

What can I say, I love it, very funny and the disfunction in the family makes me homesick.

Barbara Fri, Jun 15, 2007 at 06:54 PM EST

The preface to "Your comment" says it all. Loved the storyline, the cinematograpy, the acting, but the writing needs to open up and close down the constant expletives. Very retro.

Jon Fri, Jun 15, 2007 at 01:12 AM EST

Personally, I loved it. Can't wait for next week. Watch the eps twice already. Milch has such a unique style. Totally original. Good looking out on that song from the end of ep 1, whoever posted the name. Great song.

tee Wed, Jun 13, 2007 at 11:47 PM EST

The song is "sun/rise/light/flies" by Kasabian off the CD "Empire"

tee Wed, Jun 13, 2007 at 11:23 PM EST

I instantly liked it. I guess I am in the minority. But to echo the earlier question, can someone please come up with the name of the artist and song heard at the end of the show. It was sick.

FinnMacCool Wed, Jun 13, 2007 at 03:48 PM EST

"Oh, I agree with you." So don't watch it then. Glancing through this I saw a tree full of parrots. The most important question raised was "what was the song at the end?"

junior Wed, Jun 13, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

it was just not good, that's all

CACross2 Wed, Jun 13, 2007 at 07:30 AM EST

I agree. The song at the end was great. I'm currently trying to find it, but it's not listed anywhere. Including the show's credits.

I found it to be completely like Studio 60 on the sunset strip, to impressed by itself to care about the viewers. Frankly I dozed off.

series like "sex and the city" and "six feet under" caught me with the very first 10 minutes, so NO, you don't need to give HBO shows 5 episodes to start enjoying them. this was just so heavy handed, instead of enjoying the story, i just kept hearing the writers banging me over the head with "hey viewer, this is quirky" the self-referential/awareness was nauseating. compound the "hey viewer, i'm a quirky character, look at me being quirky!!!" acting, i (to quote roger ebert) just hated Hated HATED it. even rebecca de morney couldn't save it, that's saying a lot cos she's usually awesome.

No Brand Woman Tue, Jun 12, 2007 at 08:30 AM EST

I'm torn between curiosity about where it's going and just boredom that it's not there yet. I didn't like any of the characters (except maybe John and his magic pockets) and kept zoning out and losing interest. I'll probably kinda keep tabs on it and follow it from afar, see if anything sparks my interest in future episodes, but they haven't hooked me yet.

Tue, Jun 12, 2007 at 04:55 AM EST

HBO, "edgy" doesn't always mean entertaining. This show screamed desperation.

Owen Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 10:19 PM EST

Oh Slezak. I suppose if Fantasia would have risen from the brine and sung a Beach Boys tune over the surfers you would have loved the show just fine... It's a show that's going to take some loyalty and some wholesale attention paying. There's something fundementally sweet going on there. I'm hooked.

DLM Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 10:12 PM EST

Pretentious, overwritten, and the rare show where every single member of the cast overacts. The dialogue all sounds like "Deadwood," and it's perfectly fine for "Deadwood's" stylized Old West setting but all wrong for a bland beach town. The characters are one-note, and that scene with the gun-waving gay man was as bad as could be imagined. There's nothing wrong with weird. "Carnivale" was weird. "Lost" is weird. I love those shows. But "John from Cincinnati" is unacceptable given the number of talented people involved. Fix it, David Milch, or go back to the drawing board.

Adam Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 08:33 PM EST

Overall, liked it. The beginning was rough, too many F bombs - lame acting. Later, I found myself laughing at stuff John would say... I think this has potential and I plan to stick around to see if it gets better.

Butch Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 08:19 PM EST

I liked it. I was interested in the characters and had fun watching it. I look forward to the next episode eagerly. I like it when a show doesn't give you all the answers, right off. It is a bit risky to do it that way, but the payoff is so much more enjoyable. I watched the series finale of the Sopranos, I haven't watch a single episode in 5 years and I wasn't lost. I got in the middle of Deadwood, ended up watching 8 or 9 straight episodes on ONDemand to get caught up. I prefer the kind of shows where the story and characters change over time and build on themselves. I can't guarantee this show will do that, but Hill Street Blues did and Deadwood did for it's brief time. I am willing to give this show that chance. Besides, it was quirky, different and a little dark around the edges. All things I like in my entertainment.

Maeve Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 07:25 PM EST

Nyce- I hear you on Open Water. And I saw that in the theater. I hate myself for that.
I watched this show just to see Dylan McKay say "wipeout!"
Disappointing.

Nyce Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 07:00 PM EST

About the only thing that could keep me interested, is to See Rebecca De Mornay Get Naked. Other than that - this show is 1 hour of my life I will never get back.. Add to that the 81 minutes of Open Water - And I am thinking of staying away from Ocean related themes - I guess Waterworld ranks up there too....

The Milch connection will get me through at least three episodes. The premeire was sorta boring, but maybe I wasn't giving it the attention it deserved because I was still bumfuzzled by "The Sopranos". Anyway, HBO has already put the second episode out there On Demand, and it's better than the first. Don't give up too soon. I don't think it'll be another "Deadwood", but it could well be worth watching.

Here's my crackpot theory:

John is the prophet John from the book of Revelations, sent to the future to witness the end of the world. That would explain the sudden miracles of floating and bringing birds back to life (even though he wasn't around when the bird came back to life). And the whole "end is near" bit. But why would he want to witness the end times along with this washed-up surfer family. Hmmm....

Now that I've typed it out, I think my theory is totally stupid....

I hated Shakespeare when I read it, too. It was all so confusing. Once my English teacher cleared up what was being said I was finally able to appreciate it.

Deadwood frustrated me likewise, but having watched it for three years I understand the style now.

This is a show that makes a lot more sense the second time you watch it.

I'm surprised so many hated it.. I must've been in a good mood because I was laughing out loud a lot... the quirks seemed so perfectly funny. So many interesting characters...

You're not the only one Mr. Slezak -- I too think Lost has given us just the right amount of answers. If the haters had it their way, the show would be terrible.

With all the (*&$^#(* cursing it made me long for the days of Deadwood. I don't want to hear all those F-bombs and C*&#(suckers unless they drop from the lips of the master - Ian McShane.

Hey everybody, let's have a contest to see who can say "F---" the most times! John, you can't play.

I'm giving it another week, but this seems like a real tough show to get into. Liked the idea of John being able to pull anything someone wanted out of his pockets, but so far everyone's tough to get to know.
