Wanted: Romantic Leading Men

Nathan_l Question: Why do we spend so much time worrying about who will be America's Next Sweetheart when we really need to find the next Hugh Grant and Dermot Mulroney? (Mulroney doesn't get the recognition he deserves, if you ask me. The man made women whimper during The Wedding Date.) These guys won't be making romantic comedies forever, people. It's time we focus.

Were I a casting director, my criteria would be thus: Did your last movie make me go home and YouTube you? For Nathan Fillion (pictured), costar of Waitress, the answer is yes. (And I know I'm not alone.) It took me years to disassociate him with evil Caleb on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (his turn as Firefly and Serenity's Captain Tight Pants was, somehow, not enough). Thanks to a few slices of watching-him-have-sex-with-Keri-Russell pie, I've done it. Also recently receiving immediate Internet attention: Adam Brody, star of In the Land of Women, which I clearly enjoyed more than EW's Owen Gleiberman did. Those of you who've read this week's PopWatch Confessional can imagine how much I enjoyed learning that Brody had forced his friends to go to Medieval Times for his birthday.

So, who do you pick as your new romantic leading man? Remember, this is the guy who — if the recent trend holds up — you'll be watching play a divorced or widowed man with a family member who quickly lets it slip that he hasn't brought a woman home since. I doubt that Fillion and Brody are looking for that kind of role, but I would watch them in it. Sadly.

P.S. Is there a way to write a romantic comedy so actors would want to be in it?

I love Nathan Filion. I would love it if he would play Magnum P.I. in the movie that is rumored that Matthew McConaughy may play. No to Matthew (who I like) but he does not have enough of that substance thing that is needed in addition to the humor and hotness factors.

Sirrah-Sara Mon, Jul 30, 2007 at 02:14 PM EST

I would have to go with Fillion. Without a doubt. He just seems so kind and he's extremely charming in all he's done. Yes, deffinitely Nathan Fillion.

Cyn Sun, Jul 1, 2007 at 02:05 PM EST

sorry ladies, I will forever be a Dermot girl. Sure, you can have other leading men, but for the romance--can't beat Mr. Mulroney. Just something about him that draws you in and makes you fall. Been making movies for over 20 years now and I don't forsee and ending anytime soon.

carol Sat, Jun 30, 2007 at 05:43 PM EST

There is just no one but Dermot Mulroney. He is fantastic. Luv seeing Him in Cowboy movie Bad Girls. Whichever role you put him in he is GREAT.

Eveline Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 01:24 PM EST

Sorry everyone, Dermot Mulroney's days are not gone yet. He will be around for a couple of years as leading man in rom-com's. (and other movies ofcourse) Love him dearly.

furry_tom Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 07:45 AM EST

What about Tobias Fünke? I bet he can taste those meaty leading man parts now.

Suzette Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 06:53 AM EST

For me it will be:

Matthew Goode all the way...but I don't think he's going to do a real rom. com. soon.

But if you would like to drool...here's the address to my fansite for Matthew Goode

www.matthewgoode.net

Suzette

PS; too many men to mention!

Perl Thu, May 24, 2007 at 08:56 PM EST

After watching The Wedding Date five or six times I think Dermot Mulroney is gorgeous. He made the movie so enchanting. I love Debra Messing too.

Danielle Mon, May 21, 2007 at 10:35 AM EST

Ugh, how about they stop making corny, lame romantic comedies (and romance movies in general) and instead put these good looking men in good action, sci-fi, and/or drama movies where there doesn't actually have to be the same old romantic subplot. *Shocking* Maybe some more good buddy movies but again without the predictible love interest subplot.

lovesbitch Sun, May 20, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

I totally forgot Cillian Murphy. What was I thinking? Loved him since 28 Days Later. The scene where he exits the bathroom after cleaning himself up made me swoon:)

lovesbitch Sun, May 20, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

Right there with you on Fillion(how is not the biggest star on the planet yet?) and Brody...delicious! I have to add Michael Vartan, Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds, Eric Mabius, Channing Tatum, and the sexpot to end all others...James Marsters. Not only is he yummy to the eyes but a phenomenal actor!

Huge fan of Hugh Dancy Sat, May 19, 2007 at 06:27 PM EST

I can't believe no one here has said the absolute, most obvious choice! Friends, let me introduce you to Hugh Dancy http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0199215/ If you say "Hugh, who?" then run, speed, do whatever you can the quickest to the local movie rental store and see him in his finest as Helen Mirren's love interest in "Elizabeth I." I rest my case!

Amy Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:16 PM EST

Love Nathan Fillion. And Jeffrey Dean Morgan would be fabulous too. If we're going by the "I searched for you on youtube after your movie" standard, Ryan Gosling would also be on my list.

Natalie Fri, May 18, 2007 at 03:03 PM EST

Heck, yes. Excellent call with Fillion! He's got the guy-next-door approachability/surprising sense of humor PLUS the breathtaking charm.

Also, I'm gonna throw a weird one out just for fun-- Jason Bateman. I know, I know, it's Jason Bateman, but I've just discovered Arrested Development and I'm totally in love with Michael Bluth. At this point, I would watch him in anything. :)

laura Thu, May 17, 2007 at 11:34 PM EST

Ryan Reynolds should be consider too

Courtney Thu, May 17, 2007 at 11:20 PM EST

I'm as big a Fillion fan as the next Browncoat, but my vote has to go to Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Hard-hitting cameos on Supernatural and a star turn on Grey's Anatomy were just the beginning for him. Honorable mentions go to Jensen Ackles, Patrick Wilson, John Krasinski, Ryan Reynolds, and Michael Trucco.

I don't know. Didn't you love all four episodes? Are you going to be watching Drive when two more episodes air on July 4th, 2007 right? http://fox.com/drive/ And you watch them online too right? Did you download them for $1.99 each Amazon Unbox/Itunes/Direct2Drive?

Missed Nathan Fillion's Lost episode see it online free at http://abc.com/lost episode "I Do". Do you post stuff like this wherever you can?

Linda Thu, May 17, 2007 at 10:19 PM EST

Mandi Bierly, thanks for the great article. When you youtubed did you find this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwdKgXP8t9w Nathan Fillion on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

I think Waitress is the answer to this question "P.S. Is there a way to write a romantic comedy so actors would want to be in it?" From what I've read Nathan Fillion wanted to be in this movie after reading the script.

Box Office Mojo is saying Waitress is expanding its limited release to 116 theaters Friday. Waitress (Fox Searchlight) / 116 (+51)

Internet movie database US map of Waitress screenings http://imdb.com/title/tt0473308/cinemashowtimes

Waitress still showing over 3 hours from me. GRRRH! ARRGH!

Kelly Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:40 PM EST

Definetly John Krasinski from "The Office". I love his charm, personality, and sense of humor. Plus his facial expressions are always spot on.

Marcy Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:36 PM EST

Count me in the Nathan Fillion camp!! He was wonderful in Waitress, as well as everything else he's been in. It's great to see him finally getting more attention. And damn and blast Fox for canceling Drive without giving it a chance! Anybody who saw him recently on Craig Ferguson's show (Thank you Craig!!) knows Nathan is absolutely adorable in real life too, LOL!!

I second whoever mentioned Idris Elba too. I'm not sure about a rom-com, but I'd be willing to watch him read the phone book, LOL! Anybody who saw him as the awesome Stringer Bell in The Wire knows he's beyond hot.

Another second for whoever mentioned Gerry Butler too. If you're only familiar with him from 300, it's not so apparent, but he's one seriously adorable hunk! And he's got a romantic movie coming out in December -- PS I Love You. Be prepared for serious drooling ladies, LOL!!

And last, in the 'not-sure-yet-but-keeping-an-eye-on' category -- Kevin Alejandro, who starred with Nathan in Drive.

Elaine Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:42 PM EST

Whoever said David Anders, I will agree with that one. Being bad never looked so good. Plus the boy fights between him and Michael Vartan were one of the best parts of Alias.
He was on the Grey's Anatomy spin off episode as one of the potential dads and it took me a few seconds to recognize him since he was not speaking with a British accent.

annie Thu, May 17, 2007 at 05:56 PM EST

"David Boreanaz. The man could have chemistry with a cactus."
Whoever wrote that, 1) I second that fully, 2) thanks for the funniest thing I've read all day.
I also support Topher Grace, he's got an American Hugh Grant thing going on.
Hugh Jackman's already famous enough, but he could do anything as far as I'm concerned.

not doing it fr me Thu, May 17, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

Sarah C-how could I forgot Michael vartan? Only reason I ever even watched the show.

Ceballos-totally agree with you. Cant believe Hill Harper was all I could come up with when Chiwetel Ejiofor (kinky boots), Adam Rodriguez (csi, that lionel richie vid), Idris Elba (the wire), Yancey Arias (Kingpin, romantic comedy preview in an epsiode of"half&Half) are all out there.

I also second Simon Baker.

Danielle Thu, May 17, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

Hands down, the sexiest man in film today is Liev Schreiber. I have loved him since "Ransom", but I suggest anyone who doesn't believe me start with "A Walk On the Moon" and segue into " The Daytrippers". He is absolutely adorable.

not doing it for me Thu, May 17, 2007 at 04:29 PM EST

I disagree about Nathan Fillion, maybe its because I remember him from his soap past, but I just dont get all excited when I see him. Even worse with Adam BRody..all i think is "OC" (which i NEVER got) & sporting tragically current pencil slim slacks with an ever-present slightly confused, bewildered look on his face.
These guys dont stand up to Dermott, Hugh, etc. for me.

My picks would have to be Ryan Gosling (offbeat romantic lead) who would bring layers, Scott Speedman (hottest romantic lead guy), Hill Harper(cutie pie, non-threatening romantic lead guy) and yes, dare I say...COlin Farrell (come-back romantic lead guy), because I think he's got it in him. The New World was one of the most romantic movies I have ever seen, and I totally bought him as a brooding yet hot John Smith. (altho his leading lady was only 14..but um, whatever).

paula Thu, May 17, 2007 at 04:25 PM EST

I'd follow Nathan Fillion anywhere, watch him in anything. Somebody put this man into a hit so everyone can see what a star he is.

Little Lamb Thu, May 17, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

I'd like to see Naveen Andrews in a romantic comedy. I liked him in "Bride and Prejudice," but he had a fairly minor role in that. I agree with those suggesting Donald Faison, too - I've loved him since "Clueless," and it would be nice to see him in a more leading-man type of role.

MM Thu, May 17, 2007 at 04:18 PM EST

Mathew Goode and Michael Vartan were good picks (Sarah C). I'd also say Sendhil Ramamurthy (Mohinder from Heroes), Daniel Dae Kim and Boris Kodjoe. Hot, hot, hot.

Canter Thu, May 17, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

Nathan Fillion is already my favourite romantic hero.
Does that make him a RBDH?

Dumbhead Thu, May 17, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

Haven't seen Waitress yet because it's not in a theater near me, but Nathan deserves full-blown stardom. He’s Hollywood’s best kept secret.

Thu, May 17, 2007 at 03:40 PM EST

Romantic COMEDIES should have funny leading men. How about those two handsome, hilarious guys from Arrested Development: Jason Bateman and Will Arnett. I'd watch Will as a romantic leading man every day of the week.

Alyson Thu, May 17, 2007 at 03:34 PM EST

John Krasinski...we see him do sweet and sincere, as well as incredibly funny on the Office. What more do you need in a romantic comedy?

Also, how about Matthew McFayden? Has there ever been a sexier Mr. Darcy? He was spot-on with his caricature of the proud Englishman. Accents are incredibly hot.

Erica Thu, May 17, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

I think Adam Brody is a suitable successor to Hugh Grant. Both fit very well into the handsome, slightly bumbling, but clearly charming romantic interest.

Nathan Fillion, on the other hand, proves with every role his range in comedy, drama, and leading man capacity. Here's to hoping he's given more opportunities to show that range and given the recognition he deserves.

Mouth Thu, May 17, 2007 at 03:14 PM EST

Nose, I second David Anders (Sark). Any American who can get away with a British accent for five years and keep me hoping that someday, despite his brutal theft of her eggs, he and Sydney Bristow would hook up can totally rock any rom-com thrown at him.

Karen Thu, May 17, 2007 at 03:06 PM EST

Nathan Fillion all the way! He needs to be in more films, a guy with his talent and charisma can't keep going unnoticed!

Ceballos Thu, May 17, 2007 at 03:05 PM EST

aa:

Ha...I was just coming back on here to add Donald Faison's name to the list...good call! I like your choice of Omar Epps too. I'll also add Mekhi Pfeiffer who, though mostly humorless (like everyone else) on "ER" is funny and charming in interviews. (apparently, it's a black TV doctor thing)

DLM Thu, May 17, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

Patrick Wilson. His recent film career has been filled with harder, edgier fare like "Little Children" and "Hard Candy," but those just prove that he's an actor with range and substance. He's also a dashing, charming leading man. On top of that, he could play the Elephant Man and it would still be impossible to miss how good looking he is.

Fi Thu, May 17, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

jenn,
I completely agree about Simon Baker. It doesn't matter what it is, if he's in it, I'm watching.

andi Thu, May 17, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

Nathan Fillion is hot! I haven't seen him in Waitress yet, but obviously I'm missing something! Hopefully he'll be recognized for the magnet he is and get a great role soon.

Karoline Thu, May 17, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

Anyone who remembers Nathan Fillion from his soap days on 'One Life to Live' knows he's got what it takes to play a male romantic lead. I also agree that Michael Vartan should be considered for more roles like the one he had opposite Drew Barrymore in 'Never Been Kissed'.

CC Thu, May 17, 2007 at 02:55 PM EST

Ewan McGregor anytime!!

j Thu, May 17, 2007 at 02:54 PM EST

Jesse Martin, Zach Gilford, John Krasinski, Kyle Chandler (I'd watch him read a book), and I'll second Christian Bale

aa Thu, May 17, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

thank you ceballos. i agree w/your point and choices and add omar epps (rmbr love & basketball?) and donald faison just because i think he can do anything.

DooWop Thu, May 17, 2007 at 02:29 PM EST

*swoon* I am so with the Nathan love. Waitress is going to make him a star. He's amazing in it, and the way he plays his part, I can tell that he's the kind of OB/GYN who doesn't have cold hands. ;)

Stef Thu, May 17, 2007 at 02:26 PM EST

Mark Ruffalo, without a doubt. I think he's the most charming romantic leading man, especially in "13 Going on 30." I know in interviews he says he makes those movies partly to be able to keep making other movies that mean something to him, but he's just SO GOOD. He's the tops for me.

jenn Thu, May 17, 2007 at 02:26 PM EST

Simon Baker anyone? Just watch "Something New" and fall in love.

I have to say John Corbett, fell in love with him on SATC but am not sure if I could see him and swoon without thinking of SATC.

Blair Underwood has eyes that smile...they're awesome.

Kokie Thu, May 17, 2007 at 02:18 PM EST

Dermot Mulroney...man, I've been in love with him since I saw him in My Best Friend's Wedding. I always thought of him as having a very dreamy look about him and the only other guy out there at this point I can say that about is Dr. McDreamy himself. Patrick Dempsey is deliciously handsome.

Ep Sato Thu, May 17, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

Why not Fillon's co-star Adam Baldwin? he's got a lovable lug aspect that worked when Vincent D'onoffrio did romantic roles.

For a more "everyman" kind of a leading romantic comic, they should keep giving Paul Giamatti work. He'd be a convincing romantic comedy guy because he looks closer to what most men REALLY look like than say, Nate Fillon does.

Or, as Ceballos pointed out, they could occasionally infuse some color into these roles. Chiwetel Ejiofor (another Serenity star) has the voice and the looks.

On that note, I'd love to see romantic comedies reflect the really shallow nature of dating and of the modern overly romantisized views of it. How about a movie about internet dating? But then again, I wouldn't want my sci fi movies made real either, so maybe it's best to shut my pie hole.

Cassie Thu, May 17, 2007 at 02:00 PM EST

Nathan Fillion is a total, balls-out star. The rest of the world just hasn't noticed yet. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a total Browncoat. Seriously, that man can be my OBGYN any day of the week.

Rachel Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:59 PM EST

I have been saying Nathan Fillion was hot for years now. It is about time people are catching on.

evie Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:59 PM EST

I hadn't even been worried about this problem because I just ASSUMED Patrick Dempsey would step back into his role as romcom hero. He's good at soulful glances, and the inevitable moment in every romcom where the guy screws up somehow. Undoubtedly he will follow in Clooney' footsteps, beginning with romantic comedies (One Fine Day, anyone?) and eventually moving to "edgier" films. However, in Dempsey's case his edgy role will probably be a gay prostitute or a dad with a sick kid or something.

juliette Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

I'm not sure if he's the romantic comedy type but Christian Bale would be my pick. He made me swoon in Little Women. ;)

Ceballos Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:52 PM EST

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Except for Gael Garcia Bernal (sorry if I missed any other suggestions) I'm seeing a (sadly) typical lack of color on this list.

For some reason, my name isn't being bandied about, so I'll toss in Jay Hernandez, Taye Diggs (who I firmly believe can be a romantic leading man yet! see "Brown Sugar"), Chiwetel Ejiofor (I apologize if I killed his name) and Adam Rodriguez.

Joslyn Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

Bradley Cooper (why isn't Who Wants to Marry Ryan Banks on DVD?), Mark Ruffalo (I watch Just Like Heaven EVERY TIME it's on TV), Nathan Fillion, absolutely.
Love Matthew Goode! I would really like to see him in better fare than Chasing Liberty or Imagine Me and You. (Match Point was good, but he didn't really have too much to do.)
I have to throw Jason Dohring out there too. It's looking like he will be unemployed soon and I think he'd be a dreamy romantic leading man with a snarky, caddish edge.

shana Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:46 PM EST

I agree with Bradley Cooper, Matthew Goode, Michael Vartan, and Adam Brody. I would add Ryan Reynolds, Patrick Demspey, the guy playing Henry on Ugly Betty, and Topher Grace. I still enjoy Matthew McConnaughey, John Cusak, Robert Downey Jr, who all did rom-coms in the past.

shana Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:45 PM EST

I agree with Bradley Cooper, Matthew Goode, Michael Vartan, and Adam Brody. I would add Ryan Reynolds, Patrick Demspey, the guy playing Henry on Ugly Betty, and Topher Grace. I still enjoy Matthew McConnaughey, John Cusak, Robert Downey Jr, who all did rom-coms in the past.

Liz Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:41 PM EST

Umm...hello Eric Bana, Gerard Butler, Gael Garcia Bernal, James McAvoy (LOVE him), Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo. Can't go wrong with this bunch.

Nose Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

I love Ryan Gosling, but I hope he stays away from this genre of movie. I hope he keeps up with the Half Nelson-type fare.
Bradley Cooper is an excellent choice, and what I wouldn't give for a Will Tippen-Sark double feature!

jessica Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:30 PM EST

jess, i'm with you. john krasinski should be a natural, plus, he's actually funny!

Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:26 PM EST

Gerard Butler. Enough said.

Leigh Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:07 PM EST

Fillion gets my vote! I'm going to see Waitress for the third time this weekend, just because of him and his fabulous performance.

ryan's mom Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:05 PM EST

I love the Ryan Gosling & Timothy Olyphant picks. ( I still dream of Sheriff Bullock from Deadwood. )Taylor Kitsch ( Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights ) is young but has charisma out the ying-yang.

Jenn Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

How about Mark Ruffalo? He hasn't always been in the best movies, but he made me swoon after 13 Going On 30. So sweet...

Charlotte Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:02 PM EST

Scott Speedman.... where has he been!!

Elaine Thu, May 17, 2007 at 01:01 PM EST

I forgot to add Bradley Cooper. MMM...

Elaine Thu, May 17, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

Loved Fillion since "Two guys and a girl". I adore Vartan. He's SOOOO pretty. I think Adam Brody might make a good successor to Hugh.

Thu, May 17, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

David Boreanaz. The man could have chemistry with a cactus.

Umm Thu, May 17, 2007 at 12:58 PM EST

James Franco...anyone who saw him in Freaks and Geeks knows he can pull off the bad boy with just enough good in him...and he was delicious in Tristan and Isolde. Also Bradley Cooper.

Jess Thu, May 17, 2007 at 12:58 PM EST

I can't wait to see John Krasinski in "License to Wed" with Mandy Moore this summer. Anyone who watches the Office knows he can play the cute, funny leading man.

Sophie Thu, May 17, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

I imbd'd Timothy Olyphant after watching Catch & Release (bad movie, but he was appealing).

I also love Bradley Cooper!

Nicole Thu, May 17, 2007 at 12:49 PM EST

After Ryan Gosling's turn in the Notebook he should be a shoe-in for this group...and he's got the acting chops.

Cliff Thu, May 17, 2007 at 12:47 PM EST

There are great romantic parts out there (Hugh Grant's people find the best scripts: Four Weddings, Notting Hill, About a Boy), but you're right, the actors who get most of the parts aren't suited for them. Adam Sandler mumbling his way through romantic subplots is rarely believable. How about Jason Bateman?

Sarah C Thu, May 17, 2007 at 12:47 PM EST

I like my leading guys smart, ironic, and a little sheepish.

Dermot's successor: Aaron Eckhardt and Michael Vartan

Hugh's successor: Matthew Goode and Ioan Gruffudd

kat Thu, May 17, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

I've had a bit of a crush on Nathan Fillion since his days as Joey on One Life to Live. Then he was on "Two Guys, A Girl (& a Pizza Place)" and I even liked him there. He deserves to be a star! He's "dreamy" enough for women to love him, yet manly enough to have the men on board, too. I think he's destined to be a Harrison Ford type if he could just get the right role for mainstream stardom.

Omaha Jenn Thu, May 17, 2007 at 12:36 PM EST

Fillion has had my vote for a long time (since his opera days). But, after seeing him on Lost as Kate's husband, he's a shoe-in. Love him.

Definitely Fillion. I am dying to see him in Waitress! This man needs to be in more movies. Not only is he a good actor, but he's oh-so-nice to look at to boot.

There are a number of hot actors from the UK right now who should be able to pull the big rom-com thing off, particularly if they can do an American accent. (I'm thinking Cillian Murphy, Matthew McFadyen, James McIlroy, etc.) The problem is, do they really WANT to do that kind of role when most of the time it's just so thankless? If you got some good rom-com writing going, maybe you'd entice some of them over to the light side.
