EW.com's Greatest Indie Anthems of All Time

May 11, 2007, 06:00 AM | by Adrienne Day

Categories: Music

Loser_l Okay, PopWatchers, listen up. This week the NME let the proverbial cat out of the proverbial bag by posting the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever, as voted by their readers.

Well, it got us thinking. No, scratch that — it got us pissed. Oasis ahead of Nirvana? Two Libertines songs in the Top 10??  35 (or so) out of the Top 50 songs are by UK bands??? No hip-hop??? Repeat: Oasis AT NUMBER ONE, AHEAD OF NIRVANA. What are those loony limeys thinking?

It also raises the question: What exactly is an "indie anthem"? I don’t know about you, but when I think indie anthem, I think of fans standing in an arena-like setting, holding lighters aloft in a show of solidarity, while a band sans major corporate ties plays their Big Hit onstage. Y'know, the song that moves you to tears, or anger, or bliss. Or, few dozen fans in a cramped, dingy basement — it doesn’t really matter, does it? It could even be an anti-anthem (note Beck's "Loser," which got the most votes in our office). In the end, it's about the indie "aesthetic," not necessarily the people behind the marketing of the music. So if that band happens to be Radiohead, even though they are signed to a major (Capitol), so be it. Because they're not afraid to sock it to the man. And I love them. So sue me.

So that's what indie rock means to me. But I'm just one very fallible soul over here. So I did an extremely scientific, rigorously empirical poll of my co-workers and determined EW.com's 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever, in no order whatsoever except for Beck (pictured), since I don't have the time to enough to rank 'em all, thank you very much!

This is where we need you, PopWatchers. It's time for some corrective action. We know our list is biased and incomplete and full of holes and gaffes and what-were-they-thinking!'s. Speaking for myself, I can't believe no one here chose the Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony," but I've already changed edited the list enough. So now we need you to tell us what we've missed (or where we were spot-on). And the top ten picks (or so) will make it into a very special photo gallery all their own.

OK, PopWatchers? Ready, set... go!!!

Ha ha!! This is unbelieveably shite!

The fact that you've got no Oasis songs there is enough to show us that you're ignorant of modern music. Whre's Live Forever? Don't Look Back In Anger? Wonderwall? Champagne Supernova? etc.

Also, you go on to claim 'Oasis AHEAD OF NIRVANA AT NUMBER ONE'. Er, yes, you're problem. Oasis are ten times bigger than Nirvana. Got a problem with that.

Also, where the hell is Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand, not enough Radiohead in there, nothing like U2. This list is short of inspiration.

If you look at it, its full of has-beens, a bit like yourself to be honest!

Taylor Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 09:19 PM EST

Oasis rocks the pants off of Nirvana. They were smart enough to use more than 4 chords and not blow their heads off. because they weren't as big in America. "Live Forever" is better than "Teen Spirit" any day of the week.

Nick Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

How about "Armageddon Days (Are Here Again)" or "Violence of Truth" from The The as opposed to "Beaten Generation" - nice song, the latter, but the other two are more like anthematic...

Janell Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 04:15 PM EST

...If any Radiohead song it should be "Creep."

LemonHead Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 04:13 PM EST

I think it deserves some Jesus and Mary Chain!

joe Mon, May 28, 2007 at 11:05 PM EST

Just my thoughts on some they missed...

Sleater Kinney- I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone

Veruca Salt - Seether

Throwing Muses - Call Me

Lemonheads - It's a Shame About Ray

MC 900ft Jesus - If I Only Had A Brain

Belly - Feed the Treet

Imperial Teen - You're One

Juliana Hatfield - My Sister

L7 - Pretend We're Dead

Bis - This is Fake DIY

Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend

Babes in Toyland - Bruised Violet

PJ Harvey - Rid of Me

Zod Wed, May 16, 2007 at 05:43 PM EST

I generally agree with NME's top 50 with the following exceptions:

1-Only four Smiths songs???? Seriously, The Smiths could easily occupy every spot in the top 50.
2-Shoplifters of the World is not in the top 50
3-I do love the fact that they included 2 Joy Division songs but they seemed to forget Isolation.
4-Not only does Oasis suck, they suck really hard

That being said, here are my top 10. For kicks I'll only include one Smiths song

1:Shoplifters of the World - The Smiths
2:Just Like Honey - Jesus & Mary Chain
3:Southernmark Smith - Jazz Butcher
4:The Cutter - Echo & The Bunnymen
5:Here Comes Your Man - Pixies
6:Mexican Restaurant - The Waifs
7:Unguarded Moment - The Church
8:Baby Ran - 54:40
9:Gunning For The Buddha - Shreikback
10: Beat(en) Generation - The The

Ron Mexico Mon, May 14, 2007 at 08:59 PM EST

Damn, Un-loony Limey, that flaming of pretty much everyone was freaking brilliant! And I have to agree with you, by the way. Couldn't have put any of that better myself. Some people can be SO pretentious.

Danielle Mon, May 14, 2007 at 10:22 AM EST

Here is a list in no particular order of songs you're missing:
Just - Radiohead
My Sister - Juliana Hatfield
A Rush and A Push and The Land Is Ours - The Smiths
Seether - Veruca Salt
Let's Go To Bed - The Cure
Eat For Two - 10,000 Maniacs
The Ledge - The Replacements
Add It Up - Violent Femmes

Un-loony limey Mon, May 14, 2007 at 09:40 AM EST

I hate when EW drones try to pipe up authoritatively about indie music. Please stick to your dorky subjects like 'mid-budget galaxy' television shows and reminiscences about being suburban junior high children in the 80s. Thank you Roger and G Dog for stating what should have been the obvious about the NME being a British rag reflecting British tastes and British bands, etc. America is NOT the freaking world, and your parochial little corn-fed arse should not expect for it to serve as arbiter of tastes for the rest of the world. I would go further to suggest that what the author deems 'anthemic' in many cases does not evenqualify as such. Has anyone ever held a lighter aloft bellowing along to 10:15 on a Saturday Night?

m Mon, May 14, 2007 at 08:59 AM EST

well, this definitely dates me (I remember when indie actually meant independent and served as an alternative to all of the junk that was on mainstream radio or MTV). Here are 2 songs that defined that time for me: Superchunk's "Slack Motherf***er" (1989/1990) and, of course, the mother of all indie anthems, Sebadoh's "Gimme Indie Rock" (1991)...duh

Ron Mexico Fri, May 11, 2007 at 05:09 PM EST

People bashed 80's Metal for looking the way that they did, then Pavement bashes them for changing their look. Nice.

Whether their hair was long or short, 95% of them still could play circles around those alternative bands. So whatever. Let Pavement have their bitter moment. If they could play like George Lynch, they would.

Virginia Fri, May 11, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

Way to go EW! I rediscovered one of my fave 90s songs thanks to you - Cut your Hair by Pavement. I loved how they totally dissed all those hair bands from the 80s who started cutting their hair (though I have to agree the hair needed to go).

Lorenzo Fri, May 11, 2007 at 04:15 PM EST

I don't know if anybody mention these to two songs yet:
Damien Rice's "The Blower's Daughter".
Emily Hanes and The Soft Skeleton "Doctor's Blind".
How in the world could EW forget to put in the "The Blower's Daughter"? It may have been on everyone ipod list back in 2006(I think but can't be sure) but I never felt that it hit mainstream status. And if you never of Emily Hanes and The Skeleton Key, (shame on you) here's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnN0UwSEeeA

Ron Mexico Fri, May 11, 2007 at 04:09 PM EST

Was there ever a more "indie" song than Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar One Me"?

You smell that, kids? That's called sarcasm!

G-Dog Fri, May 11, 2007 at 04:01 PM EST

The definition of "Indie" music in Britain is completely different from America. Much like how "Pop" is a dirty word here, but over there they make quite good "pop" music. Hole? Nine Inch Stinking Nails? No. Those aren't indie. Actually Hole and NIN aren't indie by American standards. Indie is supposed to be "independant label". Miss Love made gobs of money with the record deal Hole got. NME is a different animal from a different country. Oasis "What's The Story" sold over 15 MILLION records. In a country the size of England that is 1 out of 4 people owning it. Name ONE American album that comes close. Maybe Thriller.

Stephanie Travitsky Fri, May 11, 2007 at 03:48 PM EST

Oblivious- Aztec Camera

Six Days on a Leaky Boat- Split Enz

furry_tom Fri, May 11, 2007 at 03:38 PM EST

Ahhh, I got here late and most of the good ones have been taken (Good call David on NMH's Holland, 1945). Ones I'd add:
Sun Kil Moon - "Lily and Parrots"
The Thermals - "Pillar of Salt"
Guided By Voices - "Everywhere with Helicopters"
Animal Collective - "Grass"

Martha Fri, May 11, 2007 at 02:59 PM EST

Wait a minute, Adrienne - like this list, but it's total bollix if Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees" isn't right up there at the top. And I've heard it a big arena with everyone's lighter aloft and everything!

Julia Fri, May 11, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

How about some Ani Difranco? "Untouchable Face".
Or Soul Asylum "Someone to Shove"

cindy Fri, May 11, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

"Head Like a Hole" - Nine Inch Nails

I remember blasting "Pretty Hate Machine" in my dorm room when it came out and people looking at me like I was a psycho. But when you're pissed at the world, there's nothing like a little Trent Reznor to make you feel better. Now I'm older and somewhat more mature, but I still love that song and album, it holds up.

bluenote Fri, May 11, 2007 at 02:21 PM EST

The Cure, "Lovesong"
The Verve, "Bittersweet Symphony"

SC Fri, May 11, 2007 at 02:09 PM EST

"We Used to Be Friends" - The Dandy Warhols (and not just because it's the theme song for the Best Show Ever, Veronica Mars
"Save Me" - Aimee Mann
"Buddy Holly" or "The Sweater Song" - Weezer
also - very much agree with "Loser" by Beck

aymzer Fri, May 11, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

That doesn't look like Beck to me

David Fri, May 11, 2007 at 01:17 PM EST

Hmmm, 10 songs by non-major label bands that get people to go completely nuts...

1.Vamos (Pixies)
2.Bizarre Love Triangle (New Order)
3.Holland, 1945 (Neutral Milk Hotel) ...more so than In the Aeroplane or Two-Headed Boy
4.Neighborhood 3 (Power Out) (Arcade Fire)... this song gets people going at their shows way more than any other, which is saying something.
5.Good Weekend (Art Brut)
6.Anthems for a 17 Year Old Girl (Broken Social Scene)
7.Creep (Radiohead)
8.Pet Politics (Silver Jews)
9.I've Been Trying to Break Your Heart (Wilco)
10.How Soon is Now (The Smiths)

Roger Fri, May 11, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

Nicely said Amanda.

kts Fri, May 11, 2007 at 12:35 PM EST

"Volcano Girls" Veruka Salt
"Feed the Tree" Belly
"Nearly Lost You" Screaming Trees
"Sweet Divine Thing" Soupdragons
"Underwhelmed" Sloan
"How Soon Is Now" The Smiths
"Love Song" The Cure
"Bittersweet Symphony" Verve

Amanda Fri, May 11, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

Having actually looked at the list now, I actually kind of appreciate the #1. "Live Forever" is a great rock n roll anthem, indie or otherwise. I love the total discrepancy between #1 and #2. Rock star and anti-rock star. sweet.

The recent stuff on the list... I mean, who's voting? teenagers and college kids, of course it'll be skewed in that direction. Better than those old VH1 list that only contained music 25 years old or more ancient, just to be safe and make sure it'll be a classic.

Amanda Fri, May 11, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

I think I'd go with "Jennifer's Body" for Hole. But I dunno, are we talking about the ones everyone could sing along to, or the ones the fans would? I think White Stripes would be "Dead Leaves and Dirty Ground," as someone mentioned, or maybe Hotel Yorba, if we're going with what the people attending the concert get really excited about.

100% Fun Fri, May 11, 2007 at 11:59 AM EST

I don't know, but I think that if we're gonna include Matthew Sweet, and it's gonna be an anthem, you must include "Sick of Myself."

somedude Fri, May 11, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

what?
where's Public Enemy "Fight the Power"??? talk about anthem!

John Kramer Fri, May 11, 2007 at 11:55 AM EST

Ummmmm...I don't know if they count as being indie since they have been on a major label, but how about Wilco? Maybe "I am trying to break your heart" from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Other than that,
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane over the Sea
Pixies - Where is my Mind
Pavement - Summer Babe (Winter Version)

Sparkler Fri, May 11, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

Don't know if these have been mentioned yet:

"Cannonball," The Breeders
"Creep," Radiohead
"Song for the Dumped," Ben Folds Five
"Universal Heartbeat," The Juliana Hatfield Three
"Girlfriend," Matthew Sweet

jason Fri, May 11, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

Wilco - Misunderstood

Alex Fri, May 11, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

Instead of "Song 2" by Blur, I'd go with "Coffee & TV" from them.

where's dave kendall when you need him Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:57 AM EST

Elastica - "Connection"
Veruca Salt - "Seether"
House of Love - "I Don't Know Why I Love You"
Charlatans UK - "The Only One I Know"
Sugarcubes - "Hit"
Pixies - "Wave of Mutilation"
Lemonheads - "It's a Shame About Ray"

Roger Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:52 AM EST

Number 27 you mean? Kevin, I don't know, I'm starting to get the feeling that you're not a fan...

Stephanie Travitsky Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

How about current indie as well as regular indie anthems:

Current:

Super Massive Black Hole- Muse

Flathead- Fratellis

Past:

November Spawned a Monster- Morissey

Absolute Beginners- The Jam

Town Called Malace- The Jam

Rudy Can't Fail- The Clash

You Won't Be Happy- Paul Collins and The Beat

Echo Beach- Martha and the Muffin

Romeo Loves Jane- Tonio K.

Kevin Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:45 AM EST

Roger, I have one word for you: "Wonderwall."

Roger Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:40 AM EST

I'm always fascinated by the intense hatred Oasis inspires. Talentless hacks? Usually this kind of response (and you're far from the only one who feels this way Kevin. Adrienne certainly seems to agree with you)has more to do with their arrogance than their actual music. Arrogance which they've always played up for the press.

Tim Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:32 AM EST

Jane's Addiction? Beck? Soundgarden? Hole? FIONA APPLE??Sounds like we need to define 'indie' better. All of the songs listed by the above acts in these posts, whether you like them or not, were released on huge mega major labels with massive promotional budgets. Hardly indie. Indie in Europe is also quite different than indie in the US.

Kevin Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:23 AM EST

Ok, Roger, I have to respectfully disagree. Oasis = spoiled, talentless, derivative hacks.

Roger Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:22 AM EST

You're not going to get any Oasis hate from me Kevin. A lot of great songs and enormously important in the UK. And Blur did make number 15 on NME's list.

HatchetFace Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:16 AM EST

"Alex Chilton" by The Replacements! Of course!

The Rentals "Friends of P"
Moldy Peaches "Lucky #9"
Sloan "I Hate my Generation"

Kevin Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

Ok Roger, but Oasis? Fake Beatles with fake rebellious streak. Geez, at least if they'd picked Blur...

Roger Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:10 AM EST

UK music fans voting for bands mostly from the UK? The horror! Imagine if a mainstream US entertainment/gossip magazine came up with a similar list featuring Hole, Matthew Sweet, and Liz Phair. Oh...

Kevin Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:07 AM EST

Man, what about "Fight the Power?" Plus, couldn't you go with something less boppy for REM? Like Harborcoat (I don't remember random capitalization). Ok, if you had to "Radio Free Europe." I mean, seriously, you can understand the words in "It's the End of the World as we Know It."

Daniel Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:02 AM EST

This list is much better than the NME one, which just chooses the same crap over again regardless of what the genre or topic is. I like how I don't know every single song on here, but the ones that I do really do fit the genre. And the rest of NME's list has a lot more Libertines, more like 5 or 6. They were good, but Christ, they weren't THAT good.

Dio_K Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:01 AM EST

Blitzkrieg Bop - Raomones
American Idiot
or Basket Case - Green Day

mike d Fri, May 11, 2007 at 10:00 AM EST

Weezer - Say it ain't so
Terry Hoax - Fish named Napoleon
Better Than Ezra - This Time of Year

stsega Fri, May 11, 2007 at 09:33 AM EST

Franz Ferdinand - "Take Me Out", and ummmm... little artists known as Elliott Smith ("Miss Misery" "Needle in the Hay" etc etc) and Nick Drake.

Bright Eyes "Lua" maybe?

Nix Fri, May 11, 2007 at 09:32 AM EST

Lovely lists. Much better than NME. Britain produces a lot of great music -- and a lot of people with incomprehensible taste.

Julie Fri, May 11, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST

Thank you, LIS!! I'm searching this list and all the posts wondering WTF? WHERE ARE THE REPLACEMENTS?!

Bastards of Young = all-time fav indie anthem

Lis Fri, May 11, 2007 at 09:25 AM EST

No list is valid without the Replacements. "I Will Dare" or "Bastards of Young" or "Left of the Dial" or Alex Chilton....etc etc etc.

Agreed U2 belongs on there. They were a little indie band when they started and "I Will Follow" should be on the list.

andy Fri, May 11, 2007 at 09:16 AM EST

U2 anyone? And don't say their too big or not indie enough. If the British magazine the came up with the idea thinks Oasis qualifies as an indie band in England, then there's about 20 U2 songs that could be on here

Uh, hello? Fri, May 11, 2007 at 09:13 AM EST

Island in the Stream - Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers

D'uh!

T.L. Fri, May 11, 2007 at 09:00 AM EST

Ron Mexico Fri, May 11, 2007 at 08:55 AM EST

"Miss Misery" - Elliott Smith. Anyone?

Elaine Fri, May 11, 2007 at 08:53 AM EST

The Verve most certainly belongs on that list.

I do not think Coldplay or the White Stripes are anywhere indie. Both are on more than one XM station at any given time.

Soundgarden was entirely too popular to really be on here as well.

I nominate Garbage - Stupid Girl.

aramis Fri, May 11, 2007 at 08:50 AM EST

How much do I love lists! Here's a fe to add to our indie mixtape:
"Chicago" by Sufjan Stevens
"Caring is Creepy" or "New Slang" by The Shins
"Stupid Girl" by Garbage
"Criminal" or "Extraordinary Machine (iTunes acoustic version)" by Fiona Apple
"Wake Me Up When September Ends" or "Basket Case" by Green Day
"One Word" by Kelly Osborne
"In the Waiting Line" by Zero 7
"Victoria" by John Mayer (WAY back in the day)
"Such Great Heights" The Postal Service
"Existentialism On Prom Night" by Straylight Run
"Wise Up" or "One" by Aimee Mann
"Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap
"Maryland" by Vonda Shepard

The Roots, "You Got Me"
The Smiths, "How Soon is Now"

What about.. Fri, May 11, 2007 at 08:23 AM EST

Seether by Veruca Salt?

sdr Fri, May 11, 2007 at 08:18 AM EST

when you go to a shins concert, EVERYONE sings along blissfully to 'New Slang' and it has a very anthemic feel.
And indie doesn't mean independent label anymore. It's anything that's outside of mainstream pop radio. WS are huge, but indie still applies to any band that would release a song like 'Icky Thump' as their first single.

Cay Fri, May 11, 2007 at 08:04 AM EST

And I also think that The Violent Femme's Kiss Off should be added or replace Blister in the Sun

Jerome Fri, May 11, 2007 at 08:02 AM EST

Been Caught Stealing - Janes Addiction

cay Fri, May 11, 2007 at 08:02 AM EST

I definitely think you missed L7's Pretend We're Dead

E Fri, May 11, 2007 at 07:51 AM EST

Brick is the worst song I've ever heard.

E Fri, May 11, 2007 at 07:51 AM EST

Brick is the worst song I've ever heard.

Stephanie Fri, May 11, 2007 at 07:48 AM EST

Hello???? Ben Folds Five (what they were when this was written) : "Brick"

nico Fri, May 11, 2007 at 07:47 AM EST

The Wrens, "Hopeless"
Weezer, "The Good Life"
Smashing Pumpkins, "1979"

Brandon Fri, May 11, 2007 at 07:39 AM EST

What? No Sloan? What about "False Alarm," or "Losing California," or even "Fading Into Obscurity"?

Kathleen Fri, May 11, 2007 at 07:35 AM EST

Faux pas, EW! Where is the Jeff Buckley? ;-) I'd have to add his cover of "Hallelujah" in there somewhere. But all in all, you've just helped me make the coolest mix tape EVER.
(Yes. I still call them mix tapes. I'm old.)

Scott P Fri, May 11, 2007 at 07:21 AM EST

A second vote for Ted Leo's "Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone"
Ryan Adams - "Come Pick Me Up"
Bright Eyes - "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning"

Also, as much as I love them, Radiohead, PJ Harvey and the White Stripes do not belong on an indie rock list...

Matthew Good Band "Strange Days"
Our Lady Peace "Starseed"

"Since when is hip hop indie?" Since before it went mainstream. Since before you heard of it. Since always.

Hip Hop is indie - Rhymesayers and Def Jux are as indie as indie gets. "Backpack Rap" is another term people use.

Pulp - "Common People" (If only because it's the most iconic, but their entire repetoire is amazing.)

Ditto on Magnetic Fields "Papa was a rodeo" and Le Tigre "Deceptacon".

If we're talking New Pornographers, it has to be "The laws have changed", and "Wave of Mutiliation" is the more anthemic Pixies.

Ted Leo - "Where have all the rude boys gone?"

Pulp, "Common People"
Coldplay, "Yellow"
Oasis, "Wonderwall"
