'Kid Nation': Childsploitation or fine family viewing?

May 17, 2007, 04:41 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Reality TV, Television

Yesterday, when CBS announced its fall schedule would include a reality show called Kid Nation — where 40 kids, ages 8 to 15, form an adult-less society in ghost town Bonanza City, New Mexico for 40 days — a debate ignited in the EW TV department. Watch a preview of the show here, then weigh in yourself. Highlights of our e-mail chain:

Alynda Wheat: [Jennifer] Armstrong and I are already obsessed! Obsessed!
Tim Stack: Kids are boring (no offense to people who have or like children).
Wheat: We're disowning you.
Kristen Baldwin: Oh my God — I think it looks horrifying! All those poor stressed out kids forced onto TV by their evil parents and crying every episode? No thanks!
Wheat: Perhaps Jennifer and I love it because we view the young as accessories.

Our TV mavens briefly discussed whether CBS's schedule looks boring in general before returning to the question of what prizes the Kid Nation kids would earn for playing.

Baldwin: Each week one kid wins a real gold star (e.g. real gold) worth $20k.
Dalton Ross: I know someone who worked on the show. Everyone was surprised by what good stuff they got out of this, which explains CBS' decision to skip summer and put it on in the fall — a very risky move.
Wheat: I'm telling you, it looked really, really good. Not just exploitative good. Actual quality.
Baldwin: If you like to watch little kids cry, that is.
Abby West: OMG. This IS kind of horrifying. That said, I am so going to watch it every week. And my 8-year-old will love it and probably lobby me to get to be on it.

I myself am on Team Wheat/Armstrong. While it's painful to see any child cry (especially the one in the cowboy hat), it's inspiring to see them all chant the name of the one, Michael, who steps up to end a screaming match: "You guys do realize you're not just representing yourselves," he says. "This is to prove that kids of all age groups can actually get stuff organized and actually create a society where people actually share without greed." Each week, the children compete in a "showdown" that detemines what role they'll have in their society: laborer, cook, merchant, or upper-class. No child is run out of town. Every three days, there's a town meeting where any of them can choose to go home. They can also air grievances against their four-kid government. "Stop punishing us, Taylor," one boy says. "This is a democracy. You're not allowed to punish us. That is not what a leader does. At all." Again, inspiring... except for maybe the parents of Taylor, who looks like she's about to burst into tears.

Which side are you on?

John Maddox Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 11:07 PM EST

Most of these "controversies" are ridiculas. All I see is some money hungry parents trying to make a buck off of their kids. These kids gained some usefull and benificial experiences out of this interaction. They learned how to cooperate with others. They learned that diversity is a good thing. They learned that not everything in life is going to be given to them on a silver platter. They also see that those who work hard, get along with others and do things to better not only themselves but their community can be greatly rewarded for their efforts. I applaud Kid Nation and hope to see it again next season.

It is a good show that my kids and I can watch together and talk about hard work. The kids can choose to stay or go. How bad can it be?

Kevin Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 08:49 PM EST

Kid Nation was an outstanding event. My daughter (13yr) would like to be in the next season. It teaches the kids on what is real. It makes them work as team and how to get along with a wide age group. How to prepare food that most of adults would not even think about unless you where raised on a farm. As for all the stuff like disclaimers and “in the event of death” you won’t be able to sue CBS. That is in the eyes of the parents. If you have raised you child right you should have nothing to worry about. Just think of them going to school every day. Your child could be hurt at school or die in a bus crush, and then you sue the schools for that. It would be in the best interest to CBS that ALL concerns are covered to insure that safety for your or my child is the most important thing.

tanya Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 07:42 PM EST

how do i sign up my child to this kid nation

Johnny.S Thu, Sep 20, 2007 at 08:29 AM EST

I think thought that Kid Nation was a neat show. It taught those children some responsibility, Friendship, Faith & Courage. And anyway its not like they were kid napped & forced to do the show. So chill out all you anti-kid people.

J Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 11:06 PM EST

Let me just say that I am very impressed by how wonderful the children are on the new program "Kid Nation". I know a few adults that could learn a lesson or two from those kids!!

lesliedeanne Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 11:35 PM EST

I honestly can't believe CBS. Total exploitation! And, I can't believe what kind of parents would allow their child who they are supposed to protect, to participate in a show like this. The same parents who think $5000 is enough to compensate for their child's life if anything were to happen - these parents had to sign a document agreeing not to sue if their child DIED or was INJURED. Thus the assumption that a significant risk was involved. Unnecessary. Terrible. Pathetic. NO - My family will NOT be watching this show.

Jericho Sucked Fri, Jun 1, 2007 at 05:05 PM EST

CBS will never bring back Jericho, it was terrible. They don't pay attention to these internet threads, so stop wasting your time asking for it back. They certainly didn't make Kid Nation to replace Jericho, they just needed to fill the gap. Kid Nation was suppose to be a summer show. If you liked Jericho, you really need help. Unless your a big fan of Soap Opera's, and bad acting. Seriously, if you guys keep supporting shows this bad, it will only get worse. They will spend less money making the shows, cause your standards are low. As for Kid Nation, how sheltered of a life did you live to think that seeing kids work together without their parents is horrifying? I would like every kid in America to live like this for 40 days, just so they can see how easy they have it in the real world. Take all the video games and electronic toys away. No more mommy and daddy to make food. That's what Kid Nation is about. Kid's learning about life, real life. How is that horrifying?

Seizure1982 Sun, May 27, 2007 at 10:10 PM EST

I'm mainly worried about these kids. The only supervision they'll have is the camera crew and I expect a lot of cameras will need to be replaced due to kids not really wanting to filmed while the tears are flowing. Oh, wait, that footage probably won't be shown. Viewers may be disconcerted if they see that. CBS wants viewers. Reality?
Yeah, right. We see selected, edited scenes. Reality TV is live. We won't see the leftovers of the live footage until/if an unedited DVD comes out for this show showing deleted scenes.

goldminer Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:36 PM EST

Hey CBS : Those 2 pound gold stars ain't worth $20,000. There are 12 troy ounces in a pound of gold. Not 16! So the stars are only worth about $15,000 --- not $20,000!! Just another example of child exploitation!

Anonymous Thu, May 24, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

I am ON the freaking show. I don't feel exploited.

... Thu, May 24, 2007 at 10:25 AM EST

.....who in there right mind would cancell Jericho for something like this? serious?!

SaveJERICHO!! Thu, May 24, 2007 at 04:08 AM EST

CBS lost me and about 10 of my friends !! Bring back Jericho!!!

Therese Marcel Wed, May 23, 2007 at 07:14 PM EST

oh please cbs give me a break I wont be turning in.

Calvin Wed, May 23, 2007 at 06:29 PM EST

Now we can exploit children in bulk on primetime TV!

This is pathetic.

Jon Kelly Mon, May 21, 2007 at 03:45 PM EST

Surprise, surprise, realiy tv, All cbs is doing is trykng to follow other tv stations that got good ratings fr there crappy reality tv shows, but the fact is, there garbage, i watched jericho ever wensday, well thursday, turned out it was on the same night at my bar night, but i PVR'd it and watched it the next day, that was probaly one of the best shows on tv, u got drama, action, and emotion, look at the last 5 episodes, i was out of my seat it was so intense, so BOOOOO to kid nation and bring back jericho!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Louanne Sun, May 20, 2007 at 01:33 PM EST

Failure. To. Protect.

Kat Sun, May 20, 2007 at 11:26 AM EST

I am extremely upset that CBS has decided to cancel Jericho. What is even more terrible is that this show Kid Nation is scheduled to take its place. I for one will not be watching this show or any other show on CBS until the Return of Jericho.

The Save Jericho Campaign is making headway. To help everyone along on their journey, there are various websites dedicated to Saving Jericho!

Darryl Sun, May 20, 2007 at 03:34 AM EST

this is getting pretty lame everytime a cool tv show like jericho comes on they go along and cancel it cause they are'nt getting the rateings they should be cause alot of people are downloading the show instead of watching it on the tv whats the point in getting into any tv show if it only lasts 1 season err

BG Sat, May 19, 2007 at 06:08 PM EST

Appalling...human nature at it's lowest, sickening. Child Exploitation. CBS has hit a new low. Disgusting...the fact that CBS canceled Jericho for this garbage is most puzzling.

David Sat, May 19, 2007 at 05:44 PM EST

NUTS!!! I am sick of reality shows! Bring back Jericho!

Todd Sat, May 19, 2007 at 05:34 PM EST

NUTS!!!! to CBS. If you don't want any shows you watch on CBS to be in jepordy then stand up against what they did to Jericho. You think your show is safe? Jericho was pulling 5.6 ratings against american idol and got cancelled for this garbage. Again I say NUTS!!! to CBS. Boycott CBS now or lose your voice forever!!!!

Susan Sat, May 19, 2007 at 05:30 PM EST

I will not be watching anything CBS has to offer anymore, but especially not this! Not until they bring back Jericho! I can't believe they're replacing Jericho with this insipid, mindless piece of twattle.

Becca Sat, May 19, 2007 at 04:57 PM EST

As the mother of two children, I cannot believe parents would allow their children to be exploited this way. To expose children to public scrutiny in this manner, when children will undoubtedly be experiencing a range of emotions and situations they have never encountered, is quite simply wrong imho. They are children. How could they possibly understand the ramifications? The parents, however, should understand. What parent would want their child known as the kid who wouldn't take a bath for 40 days? You know it's going to happen. Even the so-called adults on Survivor had that issue. Without a doubt, I can say that this show will never be viewed in my family room.

Jackie Sat, May 19, 2007 at 04:35 PM EST

Replacing Jericho with anything would have been disappointing to say the least, but replacing it with more reality drivel?!?!? Come on CBS at least give us quality programming. BRING BACK JERICHO!!!!

Brian Sat, May 19, 2007 at 04:33 PM EST

Having now seen the previews for Kid Nation I find it revolting, disgusting, and nothing more than an exploitation of children. To think that CBS canceled Jericho in favor of this trash is most disturbing. It's all about money, and kid nations costs little make make being a reality show. I hope others will follow and boycott CBS becuase of this.

Holly Sat, May 19, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

WHAT FOOLS. YEs CBS I'm talking about you. cancelling Jericho will be the dumbest thing ever. Isn't there enough reality shows out there. Come on be original for once. You get one reality show and everyone wants to copy it. STOP WITH THE REALITY SHOW AND BRING BACK JERICHO.

Steve Nappi Sat, May 19, 2007 at 10:43 AM EST

Cancelling Jericho leaving 8 million viewers hanging with a cliffhanger no less, for this crap, is simply unbelievable! Not to mention completely rude! to their viewers.

Jason Sat, May 19, 2007 at 08:22 AM EST

I will watch yet another "reality" show as soon as I receive a massive head wound. What happened to tv for people with functioning brain cells? Bring back Jericho NOW!!!

Cynthia Sat, May 19, 2007 at 03:19 AM EST

Personally I hope this "Kid Nation" crap bombs after two episodes and then maybe whoever is making the god awful decisions over at CBS to cancel shows and betray fans will realize they made the biggest mistake ever cancelling Jericho. I for one am sick of all the reality tv shows, even American Idol. Yes I said it, American Idol. And really, three CSI's is a bit much. I'm sick of them too. I used to watch the original but now I've just given up on the CBS network all together.

I don't know why networks keep choosing to cancel the most compelling, well-written, dramatic shows out there ..but it's time the fans take a stand on this one. CBS I beg you, renew the show or sell the rights to a network that can pick it up because us Jericho fans are relentless and this uproar isn't going to stop any time soon no matter what you think. Nuts to you.

Save Jericho!

Angela Phonchanh Sat, May 19, 2007 at 12:53 AM EST

I also can't believe Jericho is being replaced....by anything. This was by far THE BEST show on TV. I really hope that all our efforts are taken seriously and there is no doubt in anyones mind about our determination to get this show back! We WILL keep fighting for this...so get ready!

Tom Fri, May 18, 2007 at 11:27 PM EST

Unbeleivable. I can see CBS trying this show out. But using it to replace Jericho? Its no wonder the rest of the world thinks of us as idiots. They just watch our shows and shake their heads in bewilderment.

Lori Fri, May 18, 2007 at 11:21 PM EST

I will not be watching "Kid Nation," as the parent of two children, I am appalled that ANY parent would allow their child to participate in a show like this. I am also very disappointed that CBS has chose to cancel the stellar "Jericho" in favor of this show- a show that the Department of Children's Services should really look in to!

Lori Fri, May 18, 2007 at 11:21 PM EST

Mike Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:51 PM EST

I'm sure it just echoes the rest of the comments here, but they seriously cancelled Jericho for tripe like this? This is so getting cancelled after 2 weeks.

Bill Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:47 PM EST

Im surprised Jericho got replaced by this show, it looks similar to many other reality shows just with kids. If cbs wants this show then they should sell Jericho.

Christi, Anchorage Alaska Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:40 PM EST

Hmm, while i appreciate the thought behind this show idea. It is not something that I would watch if there was ANYTHING remotly interesting on. The fact that this is suppose to replace Jericho which was a show I stopped watching american idol for should make all the statement I need

Sarah Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:24 PM EST

So, instead of watching a well thought out show, I should instead settle for yet another reality type television show that promises to deliver nothing of any content or thought. Thank you CBS for helping me leave my Wednesday nights open to other networks. I will gladly switch my network preference to NBC, at least they haven't cancelled any of my favorite programming. Thanks for your help CBS!

Chris Stone Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:24 PM EST

Jericho was cancelled for this?? CBS takes a show where you actually had to think about something and replaced it with child exploitation.

Yvonne Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:23 PM EST

Kid Nation? Give me a break! This is ridiculous! Bring back Jericho and quit the reality crud. America is getting over it already. Stay ahead of the curve, not a decade behind! SAVE JERICHO!

Michelle Mickle Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:21 PM EST

This is definitely not the kind of TV I would watch as a mother of two young children. I love Jericho and would implore CBS to reconsider cancelling it!

Lew Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:21 PM EST

This is the LAST thing I would ever watch...a bunch of unsupervised, loud kids running wild? I can go outside to see that. I am DONE with CBS..bring back JERICHO!

Anita Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:15 PM EST

You have got to be kidding me! What kind of parent would allow their kid to go live without adults for 40 days? Is this a joke?

Denise Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:04 PM EST

Children arguing, fighting and unsupervised to make whatever decisions they want. Exactly what I don't want to watch after my children go to bed.
I want to be entertained, not feel like I need to send someone to their room. That is the best they have?
I agree with the other comments. Jericho was a good show. I am surprised they canceled it.

Jenna Axt Fri, May 18, 2007 at 08:58 PM EST

Woohoo!!! I'm so excited to see how long it takes this show to fail. Reality shows are getting old and as a mother I can't believe that parents would allow their children to participate in such nonsense. What is this world coming to. Where are all the old shows with some good old family values, like for instance.......JERICHO. Oh that's right, it was cancelled so that this type of garbage can have a spot. Here's an idea for some reality tv. How about a reality show where cbs has to hire additional staff just to check the web boards to see what the Jericho army is planning and also another employee or 5 to open all the extra mail and packages of nuts that is flooding their offices. Bring back Jericho!!!!!

Randy Fri, May 18, 2007 at 08:57 PM EST

As a mandated reporter, I honestly feel compelled to report CBS to CPS. This exploitation is beyond disgusting. You combine putting this piece of garbage on with cancelling Jericho, you have to wonder if CBS's execs are insane or are tanking the network on purpose. Yes, there can be gain found in failure. If they don't change their minds, I for one am DONE with CBS.

Bill Fri, May 18, 2007 at 08:43 PM EST

Child prostitution and humiliation - that's CBS thinks is good programing - the people at CBS are sick and should be prosecuted in the states where such exploitation is illegal.

Lucretia Riazzi Fri, May 18, 2007 at 08:39 PM EST

Bring back Jericho or lose all of its loyal viewers!!!!!!!!

Bill Fri, May 18, 2007 at 08:38 PM EST

It's a shame that CBS would replace a good show like Jericho with a show that will appeal to pediphiles and perverts.

Obviously CBS is moving toward the gutter. I guess the next show will be a Jon-Benet Ramsey look alike contest.

Leslee Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:31 PM EST

I wish we would see some action from CBS about our views and wishes about keeping Jericho! I have never gotten involved in something like this but I was outraged at the cancellation of this show. I like a couple other shows on CBS but not enough to watch it ever again if they don't find a way to put it back on. I can watch all kinds of stuff on other networks.....No Jericho, No CBS!

Gale Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:16 PM EST

So what is this saying to the kids of America and the world "You don't need grownups invading your business, you can handle life on your own. Tell authority to GTH. I hope parent groups sue CBS for all its worth. And I say NUTS to you. Bring back Jericho.

Tara Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:13 PM EST

Nobody wants to see a kids reality show on prime time TV it should be on saturday morning cartoons SAVE JERICHO

Ron Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:12 PM EST

Another reality based show! shocker!
Axe a fantastic serial drama with consistent viewers for this? Cumon CBS, shame on you. Bring back Jericho!

Donna Ferreira Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:07 PM EST

I have 2 words for CBS:

Star Trek

Give Jericho another season and another chance. Look what happened when Star Trek was given a second chance. PLEASE, not another "reality show."

stewart Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:06 PM EST

I just watched the trailer/intro for this show and it was downright disturbing. Taking children that young from their families and thrusting them into a cut-throat competitive ghost town is sick and disturbing. This is what CBS thinks people want to see? Somebody seriously dropped the ball when they decided to cancel Jericho. SAVE JERICHO!

Todd Peterson Fri, May 18, 2007 at 05:31 PM EST

I am not a TV watcher. I wouldn't even have cable if it wasn't for my wife and toddler, but this past season I finally found a show that was able to catch my attention. Jericho was that show. No more reality TV, or any of that other mindless junk that is now being proposed. Jericho was one of the few shows on in a while that was actually good.

You've got to be kidding me. We're done, CBS. You're dead to me, dead.

CBS executives should be ashamed. What they and the parents of those children are doing is obscene. To risk children for money and ratings is beyond forgiving. Count me out as a viewer. Count me out as a CBS viewer unless the bring back JERICHO.

This show sounds really stupid!! CBS, haven't you got the message that people are SICK of reality shows, especially when they exploit children! You should have stuck with Jericho!

Mary Fri, May 18, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

We were avid watchers of Jericho, and we often caught up on Innertube. CBS took away the one show we had to catch every week. Very disappointing.

Heather W. Fri, May 18, 2007 at 04:33 PM EST

THIS is what we get in place of Jericho??!! Come on, CBS, you really are nuts! Give us back Jericho, not another reality TV show that's an insult to viewers everywhere!

Ed Fri, May 18, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

I guess I'll comment on this show while I'm here. I wouldn't watch this if it was the only thing on TV. When idiotic new programs crash & burn, and the viewers marvels at the fact that such things ever made it on the air...I think the networks really need a new method of putting their finger on the pulse of the TV audience.

Ed Fri, May 18, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

Nuts to CBS! Jericho deserves better than this. I hope they hear the voice of the fans and return this show to their lineup. It's not only that they left the story hanging, but they didn't give the show a chance to grow and develop beyond one erratically-scheduled season. Save Jericho!

Jim2000 Fri, May 18, 2007 at 03:40 PM EST

I will not be watchng any new shows on CBS no matter how good they look. Moonlight looks like it might be an awesome show but I refuse to watch it, I may after its been on for tw or more seasons and then ill rent the previous seasons on dvd. No longer will I invest my time on new shows on CBS when all I have look forward to is them cancelling the show and offering up mindles drivel like more reality shows. This show may be good or it may not be but I will certainly never know. CBS cancelling Jericho was the last straw. I will watch shows on CBS That I already watch, which is only 2 Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs, but no new shows for me, been there done that aint gonna be yanked around again.

This junk instead of Jericho? Are you kidding me (no pun intended)? Bring back Jericho!!!

Ron Mexico Fri, May 18, 2007 at 03:22 PM EST

I am shocked that Jericho has this passionate of a fan base. Now I'm sorry I passed on it when it first came out.

CBS = Completely Bankrupt Sychophants

How can CBS justify this garbage as a replacement for Jericho? And who are the bankrupt parents who allowed their children to participate in this garbage? Instead of airing this and exploiting these kids, someone should be calling CPS.

This is crap ... more reality crap from a once proud network that now deals in crap!

Bring back Jericho and not some other mindless reality tv show. We want Jericho.

Wally B Fri, May 18, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

Too many good shows are cacelled for the wrong reasons. Firefly and Jericho are two that are foremost.
Reality TV is the worst. Relax folks... I just cancelled CBS. (in my home only, unfortunately)

Even if I wasn't a huge Jericho Fan I would not watch this garbage. As a parent I am shocked that any decent parent would let their children be exploited so shamelessly. How low as a society have we sunk that we would allow our children to be subjected to this for entertainment purposes???

Fred T Fri, May 18, 2007 at 03:16 PM EST

May CBS's idea is to have Hawkins use his nuke to take out these idiot kids and truely turn it into a "ghost town Bonanza City, New Mexico"
