Celebrity Hockey Blogging!

Liljon_l I don't know about you, PopWatchers, but when I woke up this morning there was only one thought on my mind: Might there be any way for the NHL to make its upcoming hockey playoffs even more exciting?

Well, bang your sticks on the ice because YES in FACT there IS!!! God bless 'em, the makers of America's favorite major sport — TV viewers number in the thousands! — have drafted a flotilla of celebrities to blog their way through the quest for the Stanley Cup. Here's your starting lineups:

For the Western Conference: Amy Grant! Willa Ford! Miss Minnesota 2006, Nicole Swanson! Brendan Fehr! And representing my* Anaheim "Still Mighty" Ducks, Brian Baumgartner from The Office!

For the Eastern Conference: David Boreanaz! William "Crazy Eyes" Fichtner! Tom Cavanagh! Lil' Jon (pictured)! Dave Annable! And, because it just makes sense, Christie Brinkley!

I can't tell you why this is awesome, PopWatchers. I'm just going to let you discover that for yourselves. Today's contest: Read the blogs and pull out what you consider to be the finest celebrity-penned sentence available. Winner gets... I dunno, whatever I can find in my office that's hockey-related. I'll start, from the Uptown Girl herself: "Another time, our guy Hill was behind the goal and his stick got mixed in with the other players, and he dropped it (deliberately I thought) so they didn't call a penalty on him. But they did." YES!LOVE THAT HOCKEY ACTION!!

[*Note: I do not really follow hockey, but my friend Brian takes me to Ducks games sometimes when I am in L.A., and he buys me Carl's Jr., and I will admit that, not unlike Christie Brinkley, I kinda like being in the arena. Especially when Wildwing gets crazy.]

There is nothing - absolutely nothing - wrong with the league wanting to spread the love of hockey. What is wrong is how they are going about it. The NHL needs to sit down with a real plan like community outreach and hockey gear programs for kids who want to learn but the equipment is too expensive. How about getting behind the up-and-coming high school programs in other areas of the US? What about marketing the players and the game at times when the game isn't already on? Maybe put their athletes out there more? There are a billion ways to re-do this and do it right. IMHO, that is what they NHL needs to do.

Look on the bright side, Valerie, Toronto didn't make it either! Go Sens!

Valerie Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 05:26 PM EST

LOVE HOCKEY !! Although I'm heartbroken that Montreal didn't make the series... Saddest of all sad things !

Dan Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 05:20 PM EST

I never meant to imply the U.S. wasn't important. I just believe that hockey should be trying to emulate FIFA (soccer) and not the NBA. Hockey is thriving in markets like Sweden, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Czech Republic, etc.
Given that the TV contract has fallen aprt in the U.S. I think it's time for the NHL to get a little more creative and capitalize on the European market that already exists. Unfortunately the prevailing wisdom is that Americans aren't interested in anything that happens outside their borders... which I personally don't buy.

Christie Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

I hope American cities continue to discover the NHL...half their teams and most of their good players are Canadian (the rest are Russian, haha)! NHL + Popwatch, woo!

Christina Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 04:56 PM EST

I wish the NHL would stop trying to get the US market to watch. It's just not going to happen. Americans would rather watch a ball be hurled at a plate for 3-4 hours, or cars go round in circles for 5 hours than the fast paced exciting game of hockey. You have the best player to play the game since Wayne Gretzky in Sidney Crosby playing and there's only been a blip in the ratings. Americans just don’t care about hockey. All the NHL is doing is pissing off Canadians who actually love the game. It's ridiculous that they awarded NBC the Pens-Sens game to air Saturday afternoon instead of the NHL's broadcasting cornerstone CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada which airs every Saturday night. And it baffles me that there is teams in Atlanta, Nashville, and Miami when the people in Winnipeg really want one. NHL, learn to cater to the market who actually supports you, not the one that never will.

Who are these people?
Seriously...
Willa I have heard of in a gossip-feuled fashion.

Way to keep the bar low NHL.

I doubt they're moving teams into American cities in some sort of attempt to Americanize it (What would that entail anyway? Less knowledge of current events and more apple pie?). They're probably moving to bigger markets so that their teams can make more money. If they fail to get an audience in Atlanta or Nashville then they'll move their teams to another city.

Whitney, you should make this into a regular feature. All you need is a snappy title, like "Getting rid of the crap that's cluttering up my office."

Lucy Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 02:59 PM EST

Hey Willa, get used to seeing your boyfriend. His team's going down.

David Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 02:52 PM EST

I live in Northeast America but agree with Dan, too many American teams in cities that don't appreciate hockey. I miss the days when Quebec and Winnipeg had teams. Stop trying to Americanize everything, it doesn't always make it better.

mike Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 02:25 PM EST

Dan-I'm assuming "land where hockey is king" means you live in Canada. There are 26 US teams and 6 Canadian teams in the NHL. The US market is kind of important. I live in Dallas where people are still discovering the game.
Also, Atlanta and Nashville and Dallas made the playoff because they have better teams.

Dan Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 02:02 PM EST

Being from the land where hockey is king, I really wish the NHL would close down about half a dozen U.S. franchises. Having to see our great sport embarrassed yet again with lame tries-too-hard marketing is sad and pathetic. I have no qualms with anybody who doesn't like hockey, if I hadn't grown up with it I probably woudn't be into it either, but I wish the NHL would stop obsessing on the U.S. where only some of the people get it and start focusing more on northern Europe where many more do.

How sad is it that Toronto and Montreal are not in the playoffs, while Atlanta and Nashville are?

Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

And it's also interesting to note that they need to clarify the gender of the bloggers....gee, what does that tell you about society today...lol...

to McGee Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 01:45 PM EST

After I read your blog, I checked out the site and omg, how embarassing!! lol

furry_tom Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 01:25 PM EST

I didn't see anything that was up to the level of usual celebrity vapidity, but I did enjoy Lil' John's obsession with shootouts:
"The first Thrashers game I went to they got into a shootout. That was amazing, and they won, and I was like dope! That really made me fall all the way in love with it. I like the shootouts and everything else involved with the game. But the shootouts are the real deal."

and Brendan Fehr's indifference toward frostbite:
"I’ve had frostbite how many times? You skate until your ears feel numb, and then because they are numb, you skate a little more."

krindy bluth Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

NHL on popwatch!? this is the best day ever! David Boreanaz should be cheering for Buffalo... let's hope he still remembers his roots!!!

McGee Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 12:55 PM EST

I love Dave Annable, but:

"So I like to stand on my feet - that's what I was taught and that's what I believe in."

Granted it's out of context, but seriously.

daisyj Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

My picks:

Nichole Swanson (who?): "I really get into the playoffs this time of year; I get really excited." (As opposed to the other times of the year when people get excited about hockey playoffs. But bonus points for correct usage of a semicolon.)

William Fitchner: "Nobody had goalie equipment, so they put me into enough goalie pads and thick clothes as they could find and they stuck me in net." (It's not the sentence so much as the mental image.)

Eddie Cahill: "The rest of the stuff we have: we have a wall goaltender, we have goal-scorers, we have good defense and we have a solid coach." (Dude, why are you writing about hockey? Don't you know that this is about self-promtion and sharing the pointless minutae of your life? Sheesh, some people.)

McGee Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

I don't think this is celebrity-penned, but I'd be remiss if I didn't point it out:

Amy Grant
Location: NASHVILLE, TN
Gender: Male

Come again?

Ang Knee Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST

Sarcastic italics, caps, AND exclamation marks! Hoo boy!!!

David Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 11:58 AM EST

I never understood why hockey hasn't caught on more throughout America. It has everything Americans like. It's fast paced with lots of hitting and it has men shooting a black rubberized disc at speeds of 90+ at another man. Occasionally a fight even breaks out. For a country that supposedly loves the speed of NASCAR and will shell out big bucks to watch boxing this is right up their alley. Goes a lot faster than the snails pace of a 4 hour baseball game.
