Darth Vader goes postal

Darth_l Really, it was only a matter of time before this happened: First-class postage rates are going up to 41 cents. Well, okay, that, and the fact that, to inaugurate the new price structure, the U.S. Postal Service will issue a set of 15 commemorative Star Wars stamps, just in time to celebrate the sci-fi series' 30th birthday this May. Yay! Because, you know, nothing says "I love you" more than a letter to your sweetheart with a Boba Fett stamp on it. As Darth Vader (pictured) would say, "Impressive, most impressive."

It's also interesting, most interesting, for many reasons:

• The featured images — BF, DV, old Obi-Wan, Yoda, Han Solo and Chewie, Anakin fighting Obi-Wan, Queen Amidala, Luke, Leia and R2, Emperor Palpatine, the Stormtroopers, C-3PO, the Millennium Falcon, Darth Maul, and an X-Wing Fighter — do not include Jar-Jar Binks. Phew!

• In fact, just three folks on the stamps — Annie, Padmé, and Darth Maul — come largely from the prequels.

• No Lando.

• No Ewoks.

• The series includes the images of actors who are still alive, albeit in the guise of fictional characters. This skirts a general USPS rule that only dead people can be on stamps. So, hey, now you can send your rent check to your landlord in an envelope sporting Natalie Portman's purdy mug. Should ease the pain, I guess.

• No Jabba.

The USPS is encouraging everyone to vote for their favorite stamp, which they'll then issue in a special run later this year. I pick Han and Chewbacca. What about you, young Padawans?

I need to find more things to send in the mail. I pay almost everything by hand or online. Sad - I want to spread the joy of Star Wars everywhere!

Yes, I'm a nerd.

Ep sato Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 04:32 PM EST

Oh yea, Phoebe! She was really hot in "Private School", though I think her nudie scenes were all covered.

For me the first crush was Brooke Shields in Blue Lagoon. Oh MAN did she make my then 5 year old nerves tingle! I still go ape poopy over long haired brunnettes some 25 years later as a result. Ok ok, TMI....

Jakeem Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

No Lando? No Mace Windu? What is this? A government conspiracy to promote a future without black people?

Royale with Cheese Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

For Jill and Tom:

...I am going to buy a bunch of the C-3PO stamps for when I mail Christmas cards to my gay friends.

Royale with Cheese Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 01:02 PM EST

Well, for me it probably would have been that backseat tramp in "Saturday Night Fever" ("You wanna make it with me, Tony?"), but my parents probably let me watch movies at too young of an age.

Either that or Phoebe Cates in "Fast Times". But, yeah, point taken on the metal bikini of Leia's.

I'm guessing Jabba's junk is tucked into some crevice like...hmmm, what are those animals that have that setup? I don't remember.

So, on the premise that Jabba and Leia bumped uglies, does that make Salacious Crumb like a voyeur? What a little perv that guy is!

Ep sato Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

Roon, the thought had crossed my mind, but I keep wanting to believe he's immortal.
Royale, my guess is YES! After all, Princess Leia in the bikini was the first fantasy many of us doods had. But that does beg the question of what a Hut's private parts might look like...

Royale with Cheese Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 11:30 AM EST

So, since we are talking about Star Wars, does anyone else besides me think Leia might have actually hooked up with Jabba while Han was still frozen?

It's not like the brother didn't have the money...

Roon Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 09:45 AM EST

I'm amazed I'm the first geek to point out that the great Sir Alec Guiness is, in fact, dead.

Howard Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 09:22 AM EST

Given that the series took place "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away", I'd assume that all of the characters are deceased, so that they can be on stamps.

You mention that only three come from the prequels like it's a bad thing. It's just as well - they had nowhere near the cultural impact as episodes IV-VI. BTW, I also voted for Han and Chewie.

bluenote Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 09:07 AM EST

No Lando??? I'm devasted! I mean, I always a little bitter that the only black man in the universe was a traitor, but he redeemed himself in the end!

Tim Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 07:46 AM EST

Han's my boy. Always has been since '77!!

furry_tom Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 07:45 AM EST

Great post Jill! I'm going to buy some just so I can use Chewie on the vet bills!

Martha Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 08:12 PM EST

I vote for the Han/Chewbacca and old Obi-wan stamps, since they were far and away the best things about all six movies. Except for maybe the Tauntauns.

Vickie Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 07:40 PM EST

I must agree with you, Joshua. As soon as I saw the Han Solo & Chewbacca stamp, it reminded me of how hot Harrison Ford was in the original Star Wars movies...

Jill Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 07:25 PM EST

The issue isn't which stamp is best. It is which stamp do you use for which bill. I'm thinking Yoda for education loans, palpatine for health insurance, leia for hair salon, hans solo for dating service, r2-d2 for electric bill, millenium falcon for car insurance, Chewie for the veterinarian and, of course, Darth Vader for father's day cards. Or I could just pay all this stuff online...

EP Sato Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 07:01 PM EST

Man, I already bought a set of DC heroes stamps and they won't be good for postage in two months. The other hand of that is that the Marvel stamps will be instantly worth more than their dc counterparts...

The Star Wars stamps look fantastic.

mscisluv Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 06:40 PM EST

I vote for Chewy and Han...but I can't believe there's no ewok stamp!

Darth Dooku Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 06:22 PM EST

In other words from DV, "This will be a day long remembered."

Jane Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 06:13 PM EST

On the USPS website, they have an R2D2 whirring around the screen. I vote for Han. Han's the Man. But I don't understand how any version of Anakin could beat out Jabba the Hutt. As much as I love Ewan, I hate the idea of that cry-baby Hayden Christensen getting his mug on a stamp.

This totally explains the mailbox that was dressed up as R2-D2 that I saw today...
