Could Madonna's H&M ad be the new '30 Rock'?

Mar 23, 2007, 03:35 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Advertising, Madonna, Television

So just when I'd finally come to the conclusion that, no, Madonna should not act again — late-night cable screenings of Swept Away will do that to even the most die-hard fanboy — out comes an ad campaign for the pop star's new H&M clothing line that is wickedly addictive and twistedly funny. If you haven't seen it yet...

Anyhow, I love this campaign so much that I would — no joke — tune in every week if the retail chain turned Madge's stern fashion taskmistressbot into the lead character of a weekly network sitcom — think Sprockets meets Ugly Betty meets What Not to Wear. Just like the Law & Order's meet-the-corpse "dun-dun"  intro, each week's H&M episode could begin the same way, with a hapless fashion victim being dragged before a style court, where Madonna would ask, "How can I help you?" Cut to 22 minutes of haute-couture courses, mildly violent fittings, and, of course, the final "look what they've done" reveals, complete with silent single tears from the mute female assistants, and you've got the perfect companion to 30 Rock.

Plus, it already got brilliant catchphrases.

Madonna: [Slap!]
Wacky "Mittel European" sidekick: "I lah-ve you!"

And I love it!

Cheeky! I love it... just to share my two cents.

Ali.. Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

fury-tom & beth:
Can i just say its good to hear two people having a perfectly decent & civilised debate? You have both reminded us what this site is all about.. it`s all too easy to turn it into a slagging-match & be consumed by the venemous comments usually posted here (usually at me, lol)!!!

Beth Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 11:35 AM EST

Furry Tom: I just want to answer the first part of your question. Hollywood is a business. Most people are average. We cannot live in a fantasy. We have to live our own lives. I like entertainment as much as anyone else, but keep it in its place. The media, in most parts, is about selling something. I am sure you are aware of all the people who have starved themselves, changed their looks cosmetically, and buy the clothing that is supposed to give them status, just to live the so-called ideal of beauty. Again, thanks for the thought provoking questions.

furry_tom Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 08:23 AM EST

Thank you Beth. I'm just glad that we could have a productive dialogue amid all the animosity going on these boards (probably to the chagrin of everyone who comes here to read about entertainment and ends up getting an ear full of philosophy). Just the fact that we could converse like civilized people makes me feel a little less misanthropic. Just a little ; )

Beth Fri, Mar 30, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

Furry tom, one more thing, thanks for showing your deep thinking side.

Beth Fri, Mar 30, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

Furry Tom: I must admit you are bringing up an excellent topic. Humans have both qualities. We all have the ability to do good and bad. I am going to have faith that most people want to do good for themselves and others. Social construction and socialization have a huge impact on society as a whole. Personally when I do good things for others I feel good. I would rather help someone than to bring them down, there is so much of that in the world already. Ethics is important. It acts as a restraint. There are times when one can feel aggressive impulses because of something that was said and done to them, but reasoning comes into play, ethics will tell us to do the right thing. Sure there are times when we all have done something that we are not proud of, but hopefully the good outweighs the bad.

furry_tom Fri, Mar 30, 2007 at 11:30 AM EST

I can buy Donny Osmond. He projects the same sort of wholesome, all-American persona that Jimmy Stewart and Tom Hanks excel at. But I'm glad that you picked up on something that I was hinting at. Is the concept of "normal" idealized? Do you think the average person's perception of "normal" is just as skewed (and difficult to attain) as Hollywood's ideal of physical beauty?*
On another topic, I was intrigued by your "off the radar" line. I'm of the (admittedly misanthropic) opinion that people generally act selfishly, that good deeds are usually the result of fear (either of an afterlife, corporeal punishment or of being socially ostracized) or for some other less-tangible, but nonetheless, self-serving benefit. Do you think that average person is good with a few bad tendencies, or bad with a few good tendencies?

*I guess that to answer this question you'd have to come up with what you consider the traits of "normality" first. Decency, humility, morality, industriousness, etc.

PS Fri, Mar 30, 2007 at 11:07 AM EST

The items I am sending you will be an improvement. I am in very good shape thank you very much. I suspect the one who is not getting enough exercise is you-oh wait, you get all the wrong kind of workout. Sorry, but doorways and allies don't count.

Ali.. Fri, Mar 30, 2007 at 09:16 AM EST

ps: Thats ok.. i already have a wig & black basque.. sexy!!!

Your prob just envious coz you have a body like a bag of potatoes.. get to the gym lard-arse!!!!

Beth Fri, Mar 30, 2007 at 02:08 AM EST

Furry Tom: That really is a good question. It is hard to say because I believe everyone has a little something going on that is off the radar. With that said, I would have to pick Donny Osmond.

furry_tom Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 10:02 AM EST

Don't worry Beth, I was saying that sarcastically.
Then again, when radio shows tally ratings, they don't discriminate between people who agree or disagree with the host, they just count the ears that are listening. That's why someone like Rush Limbaugh or Howard Stern could bluster about how popular they are, when in reality, half their listeners hate them.
Now, I'm not a radio host, if I wanted to just generate responses to my posts, I'd just insult people and wait for them to insult me back. But frankly, that's tiring and a waste of everyone's time. I'd rather have a conversation then a shouting match.
So in that spirit, you mentioned that I was "weird," which is a valid point. I don't strive for normalcy. That's why I chose such a ridiculous name to post under. But if you could choose someone to best represent "normality," who do you think you'd pick?

Beth Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 09:02 AM EST

Furry Tom: I am not a fan, don't fool yourself.

furry_tom Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 08:11 AM EST

Thanks Beth, nice to know I have fans. I prefer the term idiosyncratic, but hey, whatever's cool.

PS Thu, Mar 29, 2007 at 07:56 AM EST

I am going to purchase a few hundred dollars worth of madoo's clothing and a yellow colored wig, then I will send it to Ali. Ali at last! You will be Madonna for a day. Think of all the attention you will attract looking like the hooker you always dreamed of being. for the first time in your life you will look like money instead of the pub regular.

interviewee Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 10:33 AM EST

I am answering the add for "Ali needs a maid." I want double the money, plus carfare. I will clean and cook but he must take his meals in his room. I will leave the food by the door.

Beth Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 08:15 AM EST

Furry Tom: So what? Judging from your posts, you are weird, so what difference does it make? If you don't watch, you will not get any weirder.

Juju Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 08:04 AM EST

How stupid can you be. You have told the whole world you have a disease which is uncurable, so how can you be the cure? You are delusional and a pato sucio.

Ali.. Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 06:42 AM EST

You ARE the disease.. i`m the cure!!!

Juju Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

Ali go to Mercy Hospital. Everyone is breaking out with a rash since coming in contact with your infected riddled body. It's not funny. You must stop spreading this gross disease.

PS Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 03:44 PM EST

PS Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 03:42 PM EST

Oh Ali Bali, shut your stupid face. You cannot tell me what to do. Go wash your stink feet, they have traversed many a pubs.

Ali.. Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

Only seen a v short clip of ad.. heard loads of positive feed-back though!
I gotta admit, as much as i like Madge.. i`m getting fed-up with the H&M thing.. maybe feel different if there were a mens range?

PS: I see you`ve found another page to start slagging off other people again (ie Bruce).. get over yourself & stop being such an arse-rag mate. Theres a good boy...

peachmahoney Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 12:10 PM EST

slezak, I totally agree! It's soo funny! She's no Meryl Streep but Madonna can be funny. Witness the "Coffee Talk" sketch from SNL or her performance in League of their Own.

PS Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 09:10 AM EST

Bruce: Perhaps if you learn how to spell correctly, you just might sell a few albums yourself.

furry_tom Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 07:29 AM EST

You could have put a warning on that. If someone had walked in during the dressing scene they'd have thought I was watching some sort of weird Japanese game show.

Graham Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 06:34 AM EST

Forget Madonna - I'm in love with the oriental girl!

NineDaves Sun, Mar 25, 2007 at 09:02 AM EST

i was so happy to see her new line at H&M! this time around, it's actually some cute (and stylish) stuff. no white track suits, thank goodness. now please madonna - do a mens line!

Bruce Sun, Mar 25, 2007 at 06:45 AM EST

Madonna has no talent? That is a surprising statement since she is closing in (if not there) on selling 200,000,000 albems. I wish I had such little talent.

Juju Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 08:14 PM EST

Someone posted that Madonna is a business woman and I am inclined to agree. What else accounts for her fame? She has no real talent to speak of. Her clothing line will be a success because she knows how to hook her fans.

Macy Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 06:44 PM EST

What was the marble rolling sound when she started talking?
