What's your early fall-pilot pick?

Mar 26, 2007, 05:21 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Television

Krause_l The TV networks will be announcing their fall lineups in mere weeks, meaning dozens of pilots currently in contention to feed on the bones of Kidnapped, Smith, and Runaway will never see the light of day. Last week, USA Today published a roundup (click here to read it) of contending shows from stars like Brooke "Healthy Mouth" Shields, Molly Shannon, Patricia Heaton, Parker Posey, and Michael Vartan, as well as new takes on The Terminator, Footballers' Wives, Life on Mars, and the Geico "caveman" commercials. And even though most of us haven't actually seen the pilots in question, I figured it would be a great way to procrastinate an interesting exercise for everyone to choose the one pilot that sounds most promising — on paper anyway.

I'm putting my early money on ABC's Peter Krause (pictured) vehicle Dirty Sexy Money, about an attorney working for a shady, wealthy family whose members include Donald Sutherland, Jill Clayburgh, and Billy Baldwin. For starters, this one's got a great title and a great cast, it comes from producer Greg Berlanti (Brothers & Sisters, Everwood), and it might help balance out my chick-heavy current DVR schedule. Place your bets now, PopWatchers... then we can check back in May to see how many of our (not completely informed) picks got picked up!

One of my top picks would be I'm Paige Wilson. I am a fan of the late Commander In Chief, and this comes from Rod Lurie (creator of that show). The show just seems really really good. Here is the description from the futon critic:

drama that revolves around a naive but incredibly bright 27-year-old female congressional aide who becomes so infuriated by her boss' political maneuvering that she decides to run against him. It stars Jaime Ray Newman and Will Lyman.

DIDDY Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 04:47 PM EST

I am really looking forward to the new LL COOL J vehicle, "THE MAN". It looks to be a good bit of FUN television! Hard hitting crime mixed with some comedy. Think Lethal Weapon type of TV show!

elaine Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

My ears immediately perked up when I saw the name of Michael Vartan. Put him on my TV screen and I'm so there. Having said that, I read the synopsis of B&B and am looking foward to a series revolving around the men for a change...a very nice change of pace.

CaramelKorn Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

Me & Lee baby! Lee majors doing back surgery in his secret lab has sleeper hit written all over it!

Friday Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 10:32 AM EST

I would watch anything with Peter Krause!! He was so excellent in 6 Feet Under that I'll never forget him. I even enjoyed "The Lost Room" miniseries on The sci fi channel. Looking forward to seeing more of him.

Tiff Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 10:05 AM EST

They all sound lame and unoriginal!!!

Julie Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 09:07 AM EST

I guess I'm the only one here who thinks the Geico cavemen are hilarious. I can watch them over and over -- esp. the one on the couch with his therapist (puts his mother on speaker) and the one that's a takeoff on a cable news interview with a split screen. Come on, those are funny!! As a rule I hate 30 min. sitcoms, but I will give this a shot.
And yes to Michael Vartan. A thousand times yes.

Verity Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 07:55 AM EST

I really enjoyed the British version of "Life on Mars" so I'm looking forward to seeing what David E Kelley can do with an American version.

Note: I don't share the same sentiments for "Footballers Wive$"/"Football Wives"

Wyatt Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 06:21 AM EST

I'm definitely interested in the Untitled Jon Harmon Feldman project starring Michael Vartan. It's a great change of pace to get a show revolving around the men and their daily lives.

bud Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 06:06 AM EST

Paticia Heaton-UGH. The only way I would watch her again? If she was forced to watch Michael J. Fox talk about stem cell research on a constant loop.

Rusty Suede Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 03:26 AM EST

Jon Stewart produced a new baseball sitcom pilot called Three Strikes. It's awesome, but is not even on TV yet. Someone posted it on YouTube. You can check it out here...

a) Peter Krause can carry any series - especially when he has a strong supporting cast (Six Feet Under, Sports Night).
b) Speaking of Sports Night - Joshua Malina will light up my living room.
c) As much as I love the cavemen, ABC might only make us laugh if they deliver dry sarcasm in 30 second segments.
d) Underbelly looks surprisingly promising from its promos.
... Bring it on, Fall TV!

Ed Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 12:22 AM EST

Lipstick Jungle. I think Brooke deserves a comeback, but then again where did she go.

Mona Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 11:23 PM EST

A CEO drama with Michael Vartan - that´s what I want, that´s my show!

Richard Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 10:56 PM EST

Why do I get the impression that the slim pickings of pilot possibilites get slimmer every year? I have the feeling Michael that you, I and any random woman from Colorado could spend an evening geting smashed and create the treatment, the bible and half a season's worth of scripts for a decent show, starring people who didn't win on Big Brother. Yet television isn't much in the business of taking risks these days, so even if we could turn out a bunch of interesting stories and some good lines, I doubt it would get produced. The result seems to be a lot of dumb TV. while great shows like Arrested Development wither and die on the vine. (Unhappy face.)

Sally Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 09:42 PM EST

I'll take any show with Michael Vartan in it. Bring it on ABC.

Josh Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 09:40 PM EST

A few of ABC's pilot ideas wouldn't jump out at me but those casts! the CEO drama, Dirty Sexy Money, Football Wives, etc etc. Even some that are getting less attention like Marlowe have stars I love, like Jason O'Mara ... mmmmmm And though the Thick of It might not appeal to me otherwise, that Arrested pedigree, wow :) I have a feeling they'll pick up many shows, saving some for midseason

Josh Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 09:34 PM EST

It's difficult without seeing pilots, but I have schedule suggestions for ABC.
SUN 7: EM:HE; 8: Dw/Stars; 9: Grey's spinoff; 10: B&S MON 8: DWTS results; 9: Bachelor; 10: Men in Trees TUES 8 New Coms; 9: Desp Housewives; 10: New Drama; WED 8 New Coms; 9 Boston Legal; 10 New Drama Fall/ Lost Wint/Spr; THURS 8: Betty; 9: Grey's; 10: New Drama; FRI 8: AFH Videos; 9: New (or Brian, Oct. Rd or Jim/Lopez); 10 20/20 SAT college football/movies/repeats

Wife Swap and Supernanny run between cycles of DWTS and Bachelor on Mondays, w extended EM:HE Sun midseason. Relocated DespHW and Boston Legal will help counter Idol while, along with Grey's, helping to launch new dramas. BL's move will also help if they hold off on Lost til later. Grey's spinoff keeps Sunday strong. A few things could change, like if Traveler or Underbelly become hits, or ABC ends up with Scrubs.

ABC, if you like my ideas, I'd love the opportunity to work in development/programming/scheduling even as an assistant :)

rosemary Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 08:33 PM EST

I truly hope ABC picks up the untitled project with Michael Vartan. Love him and love it that four males will be the key cast members. I also like the idea of the series being about CEO's(an original concept for a change)instead of lawyers, detectives, or spies.

C C Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 07:54 PM EST

Dirty Sexy Money looks like a winner. Peter Krause and Donald Sutherland in a series together? I'm so there.

I'm liking the casting of the pilots in general. Hugh Jackman in Viva Laughlin! Kristen Chenowith in Pushing Daisies! Amber Tamblyn is going to give tv another try with Babylon Fields (still miss Joan of Arcadia). Just about the entire cast of Rome have pilots. Of course, with my tv viewing track record, I'll probably fall in love next fall with some sleeper with a relatively unknown cast and hate the shows with "the stars".

Chris Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 07:36 PM EST

I think Footballer Wives will be great. And Peter Krause is an AMAZING actor, and so his show will be worth watching as well.

Pete Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 07:31 PM EST

It's not listed in this article, but Ray Stevenson of Rome fame (Titus Pullo. One of the best characters ever on TV) has an awesomely weird Pilot coming out for CBS I think.

He plays a detective or something like that in a black comedy about a town thats overrun by zombies. I think it will be amazing!

Tish Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 07:25 PM EST

I would like to see the following shows be picked up for the fall season:
-Grey's Anatomy spin-off: Kate Walsh and Taye Diggs would be an amazing cast.
-The Mastersons of Manhattan: Another great cast, which could make for an interesting show.
-Wild at Heart: Although the premise reminds me a little of Everwood, the exotic location of South Africa sounds promising.
-Parker Posey's show: She's great in all she does. (Anyone remember her guest appearance on Will and Grace?)

I'm going to make one more prediction, and that is IF Viva Laughlin is picked up, it will not last the season...they've tried musical format and it doesn't work...ABC's 1994 show Cop Rock ring a bell??

Jenn Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 07:14 PM EST

I am looking forward to Parker Posey's pilot about children's literature publishing. I'm a children's librarian and would LOVE that show!

Theresa Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 07:07 PM EST

Michael Vartan, Dylan McDermott, Josh Malina & Christopher Titus all at once!!! ABC, if you don't pick this pilot up, I'm switching my allegiance to another network. I've been waiting a long time for a vehicle with Michael Vartan and this one sounds fantastic.

Chris Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 06:57 PM EST

Viva Laughlin!
I don't really know much about this show other than what I could gleam from Wikipedia and IMDB, but I mananged to discover that it is a "murder-mystery-musical" starring/involving Hugh Jackman. I don't know if that really adds up to a good show or not, but if the series can manage to keep me as entertained as I am now at the sheer idea of Hugh Jackman singing on my television set, I'm all in.

Teresa Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 06:50 PM EST

How can you go wrong with Peter Krause? Sports Night? Six Feet Under? The guy's a goldmine.

LindsayLou Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 06:37 PM EST

I'm gonna go with Football(er's) Wives. If its even 1/4 good as the origin (which, let's face it, is as good as it can be when adapted for American television) then it should be great seeing as the original is AWESOME. (so awesome it had to be capitalized).

Anthony Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 06:28 PM EST

Hello?!? Has anyone read the summary for "Football Wives"? This should sounds just like "Desperate Housewives" with more sex. C'mon, it has James Van Der Beek, Eddie Cibrian, Lucy Lawless, Gabrielle Union, and more. This cast has enough eye candy for both sexes.

K Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 06:27 PM EST

I'm betting the Jason Biggs comedy bombs big-time. If not in the ratings at least in the hearts and minds of good, intelligent people like you and me. But I, too, have high hopes for anything involving Parker Posey, Mitch Hurwitz, and/or Peter Krause.

Debbie Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 06:23 PM EST

Michael Vartan and Josh Malina! They could be reading the phonebook and I'd be there.

Emma Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 06:18 PM EST

If Michael Vartan is headlining the unnamed ABC pilot, I am so there. Plus I'm very pleased with all those who have been named to co-star with him. I've been waiting a long time for him to reappear on my TV screen. The premise sounds very interesting and it's about time the men will be the key characters.

Chaddogg Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 06:15 PM EST

Gotta go with ABC's remake of the British "Thick of It", particularly since Christopher Guest is directing the pilot, and Mitchell Hurwitz (the brains behind Arrested Development) is in charge....anything to bring back AD's style of humor to television (particularly if it involves Gob and Tobias in any form)

Becca Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 06:14 PM EST

I'm not sure what I will be watching, except I know that I won't tune into the caveman show, those adds aren't even funny for 30 seconds let alone 30 minutes

Conundrums Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 05:58 PM EST

The show with Vartan seems to have a great cast and I'd watch anything with him in it. Posey and Krause are always good in my book also.

Cassandra Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 05:52 PM EST

The only one I'm looking forward to so far is the so-far-untitled one starring Michael Vartan, because, well, it's starring Michael Vartan! (Also Josh Malina and Nia Long, who I also like.)

tip2top Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 05:34 PM EST

The only show that I would be interested in is the one featuring Michael Vartan - it sounds interesting and the cast is strong.

jolly green giant Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 05:34 PM EST

Since it's impossible to judge any show until you've seen the finished product, I can only guarantee that I will watch the new show that stars Michael Vartan. Other than that, I reserve all judgement until the networks announce their fall line-ups.

DW Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 05:14 PM EST

Can't believe USA Today used the archaic term 'wheelchair-bound', which to the disability community is like the f and n words (the PC term is wheelchair USER). Anyway, I've read the pilot for 'I'm With Stupid,' which is clever and different, is based on a hit Brit show - and is produced by the Farrelly Bros. Hope it makes it...

Aaron Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 05:09 PM EST

I'm rooting for "Swingtown". I think an "Ice Storm: The Series" could be a really intriguing look at the American family.

mike Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 05:04 PM EST

Anything even remotely associated with Greg Berlanti should be good stuff. Other than that, I'm not picking anything. Even in September. Most of the shows I was watching last fall are cancelled or on the verge.
The networks should hire me on what not to put on the air.

Brad in Edmonton Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

I love Parker Posey also. Her and Molly Shannon, the funniest woman ever on SNL.

Jarett Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

Action News reeks of desperation and immediately makes me think of Kelsey Grammer Presents: The Sketch Show. And I think we all know how that turned out.

So while many of these pilots have potential I think it will be a race to the wastelands for Action News and The Geico caveman show.

daisyj Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 04:48 PM EST

Well, since I'm not high on soaps or politics-based shows (or, for that matter, politics-based soaps) and star vehicles almost never seem to live up to their leads, I'm going to go with two of the quirkier offerings; Viva Lauglin and Area 57. (Possible Nevada fixation? Discuss.) If I have to narrow it down to one, then Laughlin gets it because, well, singing! Also, I'm not sure how long a wacky alien show can go without turning into ALF.

Martha Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 04:32 PM EST

"Dirty Sexy Money" looks like it has potential. "Football Wives" could be an awesome guilty pleasure, but only if they make it as over the top as the original. Some strange casting choices there... Kirstie Alley as a small-town minister? That makes my brain hurt. The caveman TV show is a terrible idea...what's funny for 30 seconds won't necessarily be funny stretched into half an hour.

Ep sato Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 04:27 PM EST

My money's on Parker Posey. Ugly Betty, 30 Rock, My Boys and the Desperate Housewives serve as proof that America can't get enough quirky cuties! But then, I'd support Parker Posey even if they starred her in a Geico ad...
