The PopWatch Confessional (Vol. 2)

Feb 9, 2007, 01:44 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: PopWatch Confessional, Television

Ritter_l You are guilty but shame-free people, PopWatchers, and we love you for it. After the success of our first PopWatch Confessional — where you shared the sins you've committed in the name of entertainment— we'd like to see your softer side. Tell us, which TV moments have made you cry?

As always, I'm happy to start the healing: I still tear up anytime I speak of the following moment from the sixth season of Three's Company. (You read that right. Three's Company.) Janet quits her job at the flower shop because her male dance instructor makes her believe she has real talent. Jack (John Ritter, pictured), believes the mentor just wants to get in Janet's tights. After the instructor proves Jack right, Janet is left alone in the dance studio. Jack enters. She tells him not to say "I told you so." He says, he wasn't going to — he was just going to ask her to dance.

Okay, I just got chills typing that.

Your turn.

Ok, not quite done yet! I've gotta include some moments from my favorite show...
-Scrubs: I know some of you have mentioned the episode My Screw-Up and the episode in which 3 patients die because of the bad organs donated to them, but I have another one that gets me every time. It's called My Cold Shower. At the end, Keith is proposing to Elliot and everyone is celebrating. The song "Stolen" is playing, and we see JD looking melancholy, staring at the scene of joy unfolding around him. As the song stops, he looks at Elliot and Keith celebrating their engagement, and says "It should have been me." Also, earlier in that episode, when JD imagines what it would be like to be married to Elliot (after all the other characters have done the same, with hilarious results), he simply turns to her and says, "I'm so glad you're my wife" and they kiss. As they kiss, he brings his hand up to her face, and you can see his wedding band. There's something so powerful about that! I lose it every time!

Kara Tue, May 6, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

Ok, some of these have been posted already, but here's my top tearjerker TV shows:
-Sex and the City: Although the moment where Samantha mouths "I'm sorry" through tears to Miranda at her mother's funeral is a pretty good choke-up moment for me, I cried at the episode when Big shows up at dinner with the girls and comes through for Carrie, followed by Miranda's realization that she and Steve could really be something great (her running through the rain to chase him down is a great scene!)I also loved the one (not sure which episode) where Miranda is trying to buy a new bra (I think for her mom's funeral) and the saleslady comes in and tries to help her, Miranda pushes off her help, but eventually collapses into her arms in tears. Great moment.
-The Olympics: Pretty much every opening/closing ceremony, and anytime they play the national anthem. I'm a sap for patriotism. Also, Kerri Strugg's final vault in the 1996 Olympics, winning the gold for the U.S., made me cry every time.

Brandi Mon, May 5, 2008 at 11:46 AM EST

The Sarah McLachlan commercial, for the animals, "be an angel" I want to give them all my money!
And when Dale Earnhardt passed away. My family and I cried for days, still get misty-eyed talking about it, and forget it if something comes on TV, we just can't watch it!

Shaun Mon, May 5, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

A lot of great ones here, but these are my faves:
Buffy-when Buffy had to kill Angel, Anya's speech after Joyce dies, Xander saving the world from Dark Willow.
Angel-When Willow goes to tell Angel that Buffy died, Fred's 'why can't I stay' was gut-wrenching.
Queer As Folk-Season 1 when Brian cries holding the scarf with Justin's blood on it.
Veronica Mars-Logan confesses his 'epic' love for Veronica, Veronica pouring her heart out only to see Logan slept with Kendall, Veronica's confrontation with Cassidy and then hugging Mac in the hotel room.
Grey's-Izzy lying in bed with the dead Denny. Meredith standing up to her mother by telling her 'killing my mother is not going to be something else that happens to me.'When George loses it over his father's death.
Charmed-Piper letting her anger out over Prue's death at the beginning of season 4. Holly Marie Combs rocks!
NCIS-Kate's death by assassination.
the L word-Alice's breakdown in the hall of the hospital after Dana dies.

AnneW Sat, May 3, 2008 at 08:38 PM EST

MASH = when Col. Blake dies, when Radar leaves and the final episode.
Little House = most, but especially finale
The death of both John Ritter and Phil Harman.

Sara S. Sat, May 3, 2008 at 05:10 AM EST

I have been sitting here reading all these posts, and real tears have fallen just remembering!! Thanks everybody. For me:
FRIENDS--when Ross/Rachel break up season 3. When I want to cry I put this on... he rubs her arms from shoulder to hand, crying, knowing she's done. Begging her not to be. Ohhhh, it was so sad!
SEX AND THE CITY--Many good mentioned already, but when Carrie and Aiden break up and they spoon on the floor of the unfinished apartment. "The next day, he moved out."
WONDER YEARS--Kevin tells Winnie he doesn't love her at some party, and he turns around crying by the washing machine. "It was the biggest lie I ever told."
GREY'S--Anytime Patrick Dempsey cries (which is rare) I do too.
MY SO-CALLED LIFE--So many episodes. But noteably when Ricky felt like he didn't belong with anyone at school, no family, and when Angela's mom finds him lighting candles in the church she hugged him.. and he whispered "mommy". UGH.
THE OFFICE--I often cry with laughter.

bootsycolumbia Fri, May 2, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

Years and years ago, when Another World was on, Felicia's husband Lucas was dying and, on his deathbed, was reunited with the daughter he never knew he had. The acting and writing was as good as anything I've ever seen on t.v. and I cried like a baby. I still get a bit misty when I think of that scene.

Jackie Fri, May 2, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

OMG! When I read about a "misty" moment from Three's Company, I wondered if it was the one I was thinking of in the dance studio - and it was!!!!! So freaky! What a great show that was - gives me goosebumps thinking back on it too. Thanks for the trip down TV memory lane! :)

Sarah Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

I definitely can't watch the Pedigree commercial without sobbing like a baby. The West Wing also gets to me- when anyone died, when Toby arranged for the funeral, when Zoey was kidnapped and Leo ran to the residence... Basically anything.

Fri, May 2, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

The real emotional parts of the West Wing for me weren't the big traums but the small moments. Like after Bartlett had a hugh fight with his middle daughter and all this rescentment that had been building up inside her exploded and she tells him she doesn't know how to make him happy like her sisters, which was followed by a scene of Bartlett talking to Mary Kay Place and she tells him how children know when they're not their father's favourite. It all leads up to the final scene when Bartlett tells his daughter "the only thing you ever had to do to make me happy was come home at the end of the day. I just lost it.

Ditto on that Fresh Prince episode, also the ending of the My So Called Life episode with the mother-daughter fashion show. When Angela talks about how everyone is beautiful when you really understand them, possible even her.

Magnum PI Where Magnums best friend Arnie gets killed by a car bomb and Magnum hunts the guy who did it down, when Magnum gets the guy at the end of his gun,the guy says "you wont kill me your the good guy"Magnum responds"did you see the sunrise this morning?"the guy responds "yes,I did"Magnum says "Arnie didnt" you hear a gunshot and the screen goes dark.Best television ever.

In the season six finale of Buffy, Xander talks an apocalyptic Willow out of ending the world through the sheer power of love. She yells at him and h just says "... It's just - where else am I gonna go? You've been my best friend my whole life. World gonna end - where else would I want to be? "

it wasn't a show, but the televised columbine funeral was very difficult to watch. it was just an overwhelming overflow of emotion and sadness. not to be morbid again, but watching the families of slain vitims pick up diplomas for their lost loved ones at the virginia tech graduation. sorry i brought the whole place down.

Ugly Betty: season one finale
Everwood: almost every episode
Gilmore Girls: series finale

The tears were flowing.

What Kind of Day Has It Been? Thu, Jun 14, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

West Wing. West Wing, West Wing, West Wing, West Wing. Sports Night. And West Wing.

stef Thu, Jun 14, 2007 at 07:25 AM EST

-8 Simple Rules that deals with John Ritter's death....I tear up just thinking about it.
-Gilmore Girls when Rory and Lorelai reunite after nearly a season of not talking
-The series finale of the Fresh Price

castlenes Thu, Jun 14, 2007 at 07:08 AM EST

Another late entry. Season 4 of thirtysomething - we know someone is going to die and we think it is cancer stricken Nancy, after she gets the good news the gang all heads to the hospital to celebrate, and Gary gets killed in a massive car wreck on the way there. The next day at the hospital, Elliot tells Nancy what has happened and she is shaken and confused. She was suppose to have died not Gary. He gives her the present, Alice Through the Looking Glass, inscribed "To Another Alice, see page 346. Love, Gary." I am crying now.

Emily Thu, Jun 14, 2007 at 04:40 AM EST

Thanks for linking this post, I must have missed it before, but I've spent the past 45 minutes or so crying. After all that, I have to chip in.
-Michelle Kwan dancing to fields of gold after falling at the olympics
-The Futurama episodes about Fry's dog and brother
-Billy dying in Ally McBeal, Andy dying in Charmed
-X-Files: Season 8 and 9 finales, but the best has to be "Closure" b/c it was closure for Mulder and the audience
-Coupling: All the episodes in season 3 about Sally and Patrick
-Office: Too many Jim/Pam moments to mention- season 2 and 3 finales, when Jim loses his sale but says he had a good day b/c Pam fell asleep on his shoulder (the moment I fell in love with the show), but also when Michael rushed across town to be at Pam's art show just as she was about to leave
and lastly, the first tv show I ever cried at-the final episode of lonesome dove.

tracy Thu, Jun 7, 2007 at 01:54 PM EST

I know I'm super duper late but nobody mentioned ally mcbeal? Every episode was a tearjerker...especially the one where josh groban sings at his mother's funeral.

Catherine Thu, May 3, 2007 at 03:00 PM EST

I couldn't sleep after the finale of Six Feet Under I had cried so much and was so moved, it still gives me chills thinking about it now... that song, that montage, Claire's old wrinkled eyes and then her young eyes flashing back and forth... what a beautiful show

GlitterGirl Fri, Mar 30, 2007 at 02:43 PM EST

RG, I can't believe you remember that commercial about the teen who ran away from home! That commercial, along with many others including the recent Pedigree ones, slay me every time. Basically, I cry at everything.

purplegirl247 Tue, Mar 20, 2007 at 04:07 PM EST

I had never seen a single episode of Babylon 5 but accidentally saw the series finale. I was bawling so hard that I couldn't catch my breath, and I didn't even know who half the people were! I can only imagine how great of an episode it was for those who actually followed the show!

Mark Tue, Mar 20, 2007 at 08:54 AM EST

the "Home from the Sea" episode of Magnum, p.i. On July 4 Magnum gets knocked off his surfski and has to tread water for hours on end, while remembering his father.

Craig Fri, Mar 16, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

Not one Bewitched yet?. My Fav episode is the one where Darren hurts himself and he has to stay in bed. He runs her ragged up and down the stairs so she gives me the power to get what he needs by just asking for it which goes to his head. At the end she feels like she has lost the man she fell in love with. The doorbell rings and she comes down the stairs and asked who was at the door. He said these are for you and gives her flowers and a gift that he bought before all this stuff happened. It was a watch that read "I love you every second". He said he knew that he couldnt give her stuff he would like to. She starts crying and in the most sweet voice she tells Darrin that she would go anywhere he wanted to go, do anything he wanted to do but she wanted him to believe that those things meant more to her than anything she ever had in her whole life. Her emotions were so real I just couldnt help but cry. She was amazing in that episode.

Ryan Thu, Mar 15, 2007 at 12:42 AM EST

I see I'm not the only one. That Futurama episode about Fry's dog gets me every single time. Buffy killing Angel got me too, it was just so tragic. This last one is kinda different, but it really affected me. It was the episode of Nip/Tuck where we find out that Sean had a cleft palate as a child.

unconventional Sun, Mar 11, 2007 at 01:21 AM EST

The Laramie Project- when Matthew Sheppards friends do the "Angel Action" thing and stand in front of the protesters. The camera pans past one guy who is especially teary-eyed. I cry every time. Also when the people at the parade walk behind the banner for Matt.
Futurama- Jurassic Bark. The last 5 minutes ALWAYS makeme cry.
Scrubs- Ben's (Brendan Fraiser) funeral

Melissa Fri, Mar 2, 2007 at 09:36 AM EST

The episode of Futurama when Fry gets all mad because he thinks his brother stole his life, and it turns out it was his nephew who was named for him who did all the great things. It makes me cry every time.

lucy Fri, Mar 2, 2007 at 08:01 AM EST

- every moment of Buffy mentioned but also when Riley left. It was her chance. And so many more...
- the Queer as Folk series finale when Brian and Justin say goodbye and Brian buries his face in Justin's neck.
- the Veronica Mars episode when Veronica confronts Duncan about him being the one who raped her. Duncan never shows much emotion and then the whole because you're my sister. Now that made me gasp for breath.
- any Survivor epsiode where they are reunited with their families.
- Of course every epsiode of Grey's Anatomy, I love that a show can make me laugh and cry every week.
- I know these are not tv moments but I had to throw a few movie moments in anyway: Friday Night Lights when that guy's dad gives him his championship ring after they have lost the state chanpionship, in Ladder 49 when the red car pulls up and his wife just knows - I completely lost it and Life as a House - that is such a beautiful movie.
I could go on forever and ever. So I will stop now.

lucy Fri, Mar 2, 2007 at 07:41 AM EST

I have admit, I am a crier, so I do cry regularly but these are some of the moments that I can recall. Some of them have been said before, but I'll say them again just cause they're special.
- the season 1 OC finale, when hallelujah is playing and Kirsten smells Ryan's sheets. Gets me everytime.
- when Dr Greene dies on ER and Carter is reading the letter to everyone, oh my.
- when the operating theatre hears that Henry Blakes' plane went down. Everything just stops and no one says anyhing. Then there is the crash of camera and they realise that they have to go on. He was just a casualty of war. It's heartbreaking.
- season 1 Prison Break, when Lincoln is about to executed and he is walking to the chair and both Veronica and Michael can barely hold themselves together. Also in the same episode when Lincoln is on the phone to his son and LJ is telling him about a dream he had and he says he felt like they were older. That line about them being older, I could hardly breathe. TBC....

Marmalade Thu, Mar 1, 2007 at 12:04 PM EST

In Canada, there's a Tim Horton's commercial that's been on the air since last year. The two generations of Hockey Dads. I have not been able to watch this commercial once without welling up and feeling all sobby in my throat.

Stumpy Tue, Feb 20, 2007 at 11:34 PM EST

All the way back to the original Lonesome Dove, when "Gus" (Robert Duvall) dies. Tough old dude finally gives in, and so did I.

Regina Tue, Feb 20, 2007 at 07:36 PM EST

In the show St. Elsewhere. Eve, a patient @ St. Eligius is waiting for a heart. A heart becomes available & Dr. Craig does transplant. At very end of transplant they read about the donor. "Morrison, Nina...". This is gets the tears going, but it gets even more heartbreaking. Later, Jack finds out that Eve has Nina's heart & you see him enter Eve's room. You see him take out his stethescope & he sits next to Eve's bed & he sits and just listens to her heart beating. Poor Jack, everything happened to him.

In Jersey we see ads for Colonial Williamsburg and one really kills me,
a small child and his grandfather who has his WWII service hat on, watch a town cryer calling on those around to join the revolution, to serve in the war with Britain. The Little kid runs up, looks back at his grandfather and salutes him,
I have got something in my eye, that's all

I cannot watch the episode of The Office (US version) where Jim confesses his love without crying like a baby. The one single tear rolling down his cheek...kills me. Pam wants to say yes, but doesn't. Seriously, makes me weepy just thinking about it. That tear!!

tod Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 05:32 PM EST

I forgot about this one...the final episode of Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Even when i watched it on DVD i stilled cried like a big baby.

Melissa Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 02:35 PM EST

I get emotionally involved in all the TV shows I watch, so crying is nothing new for me. Many of the saddest episodes have already been mentioned, but I think there are 3 that stand out to me:
1) The episode of Growing Pains when Sandy (Carol's BF) dies -- I remember it like I just saw it.
2) The episode of ER when Lucy and Carter are stabbed.
3) The episode of Ally McBeal after Sept 11 with the Christmas parade and Josh Groban.

TOD Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 06:35 AM EST

In Florida where I live there is a grocery store chain called Publix. Last year they had this commercial where a 10 year old asks his mother for help baking a cake for Valentines. At the ebd of this spot it turns out she is the one the cake is for. Cried every time. One McDonalds commercial had this old man working. Must have been the year my grandfather died. Go figure. Any "Extreme Makeover-Home edition" show. Moulan Rouge. And of course...Titanic. Seen many, many times and once the music starts, that's it for me.

dipsy Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 02:26 AM EST

Greys-all mentioned, especially the DNR ep. We went through that and it was the first time I ever saw TV say it's not quick. Also the ep when Addison has to tell the couple their child is stillborn and then the delivery.
X File-all mentioned again but I sobbed when they had to give William up.
Buffy-all mentioned.
Six Feet Under-all mentioned but what hit me when Nate was burying Lisa was when he took her out of the body bag and his reaction.
ER-LLL, I'd forgetten about that til now.
Pedigree commercial-I didn't even know what the commercial was for til reading the comments. Can't watch it.
Hallmark commercials-the one with the woman across the street and the mail. I never saw the one with the Father's Day cards, but reading about it made me cry a bit.
Any real news anymore, Iraq, Katrina, any hurricane as a FL res., 9/11.
Princess Diana's funeral-all of it, but particularlly when seeing those two boys being so strong, and the card with "mummy" written on it.
All Superbowls.

Charlie Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 01:50 AM EST

Still can't get through all of Black Hawk Down. I start crying halfway through the last 1/3 of the movie and have to turn it off.
*City of Angles made me skip class during my freshman year at FSU and drive to Panama City just to see the beach the next morning after my roomie and I saw the movie. I was messed up from that movie for days.
*When Greene died on ER. Just lost it.
*Sorry to say, but during Meet Joe Black when Susan realizes her Dad walked off with Joe and won't be back...
*Last of the Mohicans....UNCAS!
*Denny dying on Grey's.
*The Family Stone, when the kids start coming home for Xmas again at the end, and you just know that everything is different.
*Mulder finally getting peace after he sees his sister Samantha in the park with all the other children.

Trying to do a few not already said.
Party of Five - Jill dies and Charlie tries to comfort Bailey. Bailey says "I can't let you love me. It hurts too much."
Friday Night Lights - quite often
Nike Commercial from like 1990 "If You Let Me Play Sports" where all these young girls are like "If you let me play sports, I will be more likely to leave a man who abuses me"

Oh man, I'm crying reading this list. Here is mine:
- Pedigree commercial makes me bawl just thinking about it.
- Scrubs: the episode where Dr. Cox loses 3 patients and flips out to The Frey's "How To Save A Life" It's on my TIVO and I refuse to delete it.
- Scrubs: When Ben dies. How Dr. Cox makes it without an Emmy nod just pisses me off. He's brilliant in these episodes.
- Homicide: when the officer commits suicide and the officers each go through diff. stages of grief.
- Law and Order: the salute to Lenny had me in tears. I have watched every variation of show and to see the characters recognize his passing had me choked up for hours.
- 24: this season seeing the bomb go off. seeing that on tv caught me off guard.
- Law and Order: SVU - when the white power extremist kiddo shot Munch and they had to kill the kid to stop him. Also seeing the whole unit breakdown with the David Koresh murdering of the children type situation made me bawl.

Mr. B. Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

The NEWSRADIO episode that dealt with the death of Phil Hartman/Bill McNeil, the reading of his "will/last remarks" to the rest of the station's crew. A killer!

Cheers when Diane leaves and Sam saying "have a good life", Also in "The Simpson's" in Lisa's first word where Maggie says "Daddy" at the end. Also the time on "The Simpsons" when Homer is forced to work back at the nuclear plant because Marge is pregnant with Maggie. Later we see pictures of Maggie scattered all around his work on the plaque that once said. Don't forget you're her forever, now says You're here for her.

No tv show has ever made me cry harder than the finale of Six Feet Under. I couldn't sleep that night and it stays with me to this day. It's protected on my TiVo so it never gets accidentally deleted. The last 10 minutes of that finale are quite possibly the most ingenious, brilliant, haunting, heart-breaking finale in television history. Oh yeah, the finale of Newhart when Bob woke up and Emily, his wife from The Bob Newhart Show was in the bed next to him made me cry from laughter!

t. hon Tue, Feb 13, 2007 at 09:05 PM EST

believe me or not, i cried when the dixie chicks performed at the grammys this past sunday, singing 'not ready to make nice'...being a big fan of theirs, it was nice to see them get accepted again

also, i cried when michael schumacher (arguably the greatest formula one racecar driver in the entire history of the sport) announced his retirement after the italian grand prix in september 2006

i dont really watch tv shows, so i dont have any real memories of crying, though i did cry at the end of 'finish line' (a movie, which i think was made-for-tv but dont quote me on that), when the father is alone after his son died of using steroids

also, i cried when michael schumacher (arguably the greatest formula one racecar driver in the entire history of the sport) announced his retirement after the italian grand prix in september 2006

i dont really watch tv shows, so i dont have any real memories of crying, though i did cry at the end of 'finish line' (a movie, which i think was made-for-tv but dont quote me on that), when the father is alone after his son died of using steroids

Hurricane Katrina coverage when that guy recounts how he couldn't hold on to his wife anymore and she told him to take care of the the kids, right before the flood waters took her- that was hard, hard to watch

OMG The Wonder Years - Series finale when Kevin is narrating and tells us his dad died of a heart attack. I had to run to the bathroom and turn on the shower so no one could hear me sob LOUDLY!

Sex and the City - Series finale when Magda kisses Miranda on the forhead and tells her that she knows love now.

Six Feet Under - Series finale Claire driving away and flashing forward to everyones death scene with that sappy sad song playing in the background....

Kristi Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 04:56 PM EST

Oh gosh, there are so many, how will I choose??? I had to choose a “tv show” moment because that’s so much more lame, fun, and light hearted, there are too many real things on TV that made me weep. One that is especially memorable is an episode of Party of Five where Claudia has to put something in a time capsule for a school episode and she writes this very sweet poem/letter that I loved (and rewound 100 times so I could write it done and print it and hang it on my wall LOL, oh gosh it’s getting lamer the more I type), so anyway, I still have it, called here and now… oh dang, i can't put it all so i'll just highlight the good stuff hehe...
And some stuff is important and some stuff isn't and I guess time is the only thing that can sort out which is which. And that just means the more we live in the present, the more we store up all the memories, good and bad, the more we have to hold on to once people, places, and things are gone.

Let's see...

1) Xena's Finale - GAH why did she have to die??
2) Buffy's The Body - Definitely had me going, especially Anya's speech.
3) Grey's "Into You Like a Train" with the two people with the pole through 'em. GOD! That woman totally accepting she had to die so the other could live...
4) The Finale of Roseanne. When she brings up how Dan really died... *sobs*

Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 08:47 AM EST

The finale of Xena was a huge tearjerker for me as well. Everytime I watch it I cry like a big baby!

The end of City of Angels with N.Cage

Logan Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 03:50 AM EST

Roots: Cried many times during this amazing mini-series as a child of the 70's. "Fiddlers" death is the one that stands out the most.
LOST: Boones death.
Rose and Bernard's reunion.
Raft scene in Season 1 finale.
X Files: Many moments with Mulder and Scully. I love the ending scene to XMAS episode where they are exchanging gifts in Mulders apt as camera pans back watching from the window. Something about that scene always brings tears to my eyes and makes me feel good that they had each other and were not alone at Christmas.
One movie I have to mention, EDWARD ACISSORHANDS: The final scenes of "Kim" now as an old woman, telling the story of Edward to her grandchild and we see Edward all alone still up in his castle carving an ice sculpture of his only love Kim, as a young woman. Danny Elfmans haunting score playing while its snowing. The thought of Edward all alone all those years kills me everytime I see it.Such a beautiful, sad, tragic fairy tale. Tim Burton at his best!

Logan Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 03:34 AM EST

I am loving this POPWATCH and everyones comments and memories.
Mary Tyler Moore: The episode where Mary wrote the fake obituary that Ted accidently read on the air and she quits WJM instead of being suspended.I tear up everytime at the end when Mr. Grant gives Mary her job back and pulls her chair out for her as she sits back at her desk. Mary has the sweetest smile on her face.
The episode where Rhoda wins the beauty pagent at Hemples. She had lost weight and tells Mary and Phyllis she came in third place. After Phyllis leaves, she admits to Mary she won first place. The look of pure happiness on Mary's face for her best friend and Rhoda's excitement and victory moment is so moving.
Thirtysomething: Gary's death
Rosanne: Rosanne saying goodbye to her father at his funeral.
Rosanne saying goodbye to Becky on the porch as she is leaving Lanford to move away with Mark. So many real emotions on this show. The last episode also gets to me, realizing Dan had really died.

Mike D Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 03:31 AM EST

Dave Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 03:16 AM EST

No TV show ever made me bawl, but the closest I came to doing so came while watching Telly Savalas' character's dying scene on "The Equalizer".

Logan Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 03:14 AM EST

Knots Landing: Mac in car taking troubled teen Jason home after he had been beat up by his abusive father, and Mac admits to Jason he was also an abused child. Powerful scene!
Wings: The gang are going through their old time capsule they had buried since childhood and had notes of what they wanted to be when they grew up and last scene Helen doesn't show anyone what hers really said "To marry Joe Hackett". Kills me everytime!
Moonlighting: X mas episode take off on "Its a Wonderful Life". Maddie comes back to the office to make ammends with David and staff. I love this episode. Cybil and Bruce were pure magic!
General Hospital: Laura has been presumed dead for two years and Luke is at Mayors Mansion on balcony and sees Laura in the yard and runs down to her and screams out "LAURA!!!" with his arms stretched out and Laura runs to him. This scene gives me the chills everytime I see it. Tony Geary and Genie Francis have the most amazing chemistry together!Love Luke and Laura!!

RJ Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 02:47 AM EST

Here are just a few TV moments that choked me up:
1. TV movie "Death be not Proud," the son is dying of a brain tumor.
2. "The Body" - Buffy's Mom dies.
3. When Buffy sacrifices herself.
4. On Angel when Fred dies and ask, "Why can't I stay?"
5. Angel becomes mortal but he has time turned back so he's a vamp again and Buffy only has a few seconds to say goodbye.
6. Princess Di's funeral.

SO glad someone mentioned I'll Fly Away. One of the best shows ever and grossly under rated. Wish they'd release it on DVD!
The episode of Miami Vice where Det. Zito is found murdered, with the needle stuck in his arm by the killer, and Steve Winwood's song There's a River is playing.
An episode of Magnum P.I. that I believe was supposed to be the series finale, but then they did at least one more season, but Magnum died and was met by his true love Michelle so he could cross over. Another tear-jerking song, John Denver's Sometimes I Fly Like An Eagle. It's always the swelling music that gets the tears flowing!

Sierra Hennessy Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 02:03 AM EST

Here's some new ones:

Cold Case: Strange Fruit. Holy mother! I bawled the whole time, especially at the end, when they played that song. Had to go look up the lines of the poem afterwards, I remember how my heart froze after reading them, I just sobbed.

Animal Cops: Houston. When Max brought that puppy in, starved down to absolutely nothing, maggots already eating it and it was still alive! And the only thing wrong with it was a bone stuck in its mouth, five seconds of care would have saved her! I had to go hug my adopted dog King, and cried and cried. Those of you (and I'm one of them) who bawl over the Purina commercial would salute those who deal with WORSE ever single day.

MacGyver: The Widowmaker. Great job by Richard Dean Anderson.

SG-1: Meridan. Daniel Jackson slowly dying of raditation poisoning, each of team saying Goodbye in their own way and Jack just won't/can't let him go. Sobbed for hours!

Mr. Bibbles Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 01:59 AM EST

When Dan Jansen fell in the Olympics after finding out his sister died.

And the end of the ep of Quantum Leap when Al's first wife Beth is missing him the weekend she decides to have him decleared dead while he was a POW. She is slow dancing alone to their song "Georgia on My Mind" & Al as a hologram is trying to dance with her while he is pleading with her not to give up on him, that loving her is keeping him alive in his bamboo cage.

During the series finale, when God as a bartender asked Sam if there was anything he regretted not changing something I was jumping up & down yelling at the the TV, "You have to help Al. You have to tell Beth!" And then he did. *sigh* Such a great show!

Animal cop shows on Animal planet. Seeing ANY dog/cat abused/neglected just rips my heart out

1. Emma Thompson's reaction in "Love Actually" when she discovers her husband's possible infidelity. Her desperate attempts to recover her calm, with her children in the next room. Very moving.
2. "Goodnight, Mr. Tom" - when Tom Oakley discovers the little boy in London.
3. An episode of "Full House", when Danny realises that DJ thinks he's not cool enough for her friends.

Anyone maintaining their composure in the face of extreme provocation, always gets me.

Jaime Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 01:32 AM EST

Definitely Beaches when the friend dies and Bette Midler has to take care of the daughter. Heartwrenching!
And I'll never forget the Outsiders at the end when Johnny dies from being burned and then Dally gets shot at the end and he was just trying to help his friends out. It was the first move I cried in. I was only 12.
And did anyone ever see March of the Penguins. It was horrible! The penguins have to walk for miles in the horrible snow and half of them die and some of them are pregnant and when they have their babies, some of them die, and then some of the other mothers try to steal the other penguins...I was bawling my head off with my 3 little kiddies by my side.

Dennis Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 01:31 AM EST

“Homicide: Life on the Street”… too many powerful moments to remember them all, but one that really stands out is Detective Crosetti’s suicide. His partner refuses to believe his death was a suicide, and when he finally comes to terms with it, he breaks down and cries right in the middle of the office. Also, the brass would not permit a “police” funeral for a suicide. Pembleton defied the brass, and put on his dress blues anyway, and saluted the hearse as it drove past the station. That image of Pembleton standing at attention in his dress blues all alone at the top of the steps, is one of the strongest moments from one of the best series ever.

Grey's anatomy routinely makes me cry, but most recently the episode where George's dad died really hit me hard!

Michael Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 01:23 AM EST

The last episode of MASH. Charles trained some Korean's/Chinese to play some music. They end up being killed and he is distraught. At the farewell dinner Charles tells the others that before music had meant so much to him. However, now it would remind him of only death and sadness.

The Air Florida plane crash into the Potomac in Jan. 1982. Watching that man, later known as the 6th passenger, giving the rope from the rescue helicopter to others. He ended up drowning.

On a more happy note. The end of the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Boise State making an unbelievable finish to win the game and then running back Ian Johnson proposing to his cheerleader girlfriend, Chrissy Popadics on national TV.

leigh Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 01:18 AM EST

Well darn I'm a huge Angel, buffy fan but looks like all the good eps are taken. So instead I will list things not already posted. Like I can't believe no one has listed the Lion King, when Simbas dad died. This is one that most people won't know but in sliders when the professor died and then when wade was captured by the aliens and remy found her and showed her a mirror so she saw herself with part of her skull removed and electrodes hooked up to her and then she basically overloads the system she is hooked up to and dies. How about highlander when ritchie is killed by duncan. The movie fox and the hound at the end because they couldn't be friends, that just is not very disneyish. Then there is x-men 3 when logan kills Dr. jean grey.

Quantam Leap: Sam leaps into himself as a teen and tries to warn his brother to be careful in Vietnam, but upsets his family. The next episode he leaps into one of the men in his brother's platoon and saves him, but a woman photojournalist is killed by a landmine. And when her last pictures are devloped on is of Al after he'd been capture and Sam realizes that he could have tried to rescue him and Al points to his head and says "I was free up here."

the movie Field of Dreams, when Kevin Costner realizes that his father is the catcher and says "Dad, you want to play catch". I have never turned down my dad when he asked me if I wanted to play catch even though he is now 81 yrs old

one of the happiest/sadddest movies I have ever seen was Hardball. when in the end the team goes out to play their last game for the little boy that gets shot and dies...I definetly bawl like theres no tomorrow.
Another one that I can't watch again but it gives me chills down my spine was the Passion of Christ, religious or not it is a very effective movie about anything you may have heard.

When Bobby Simmone died on NYPD Blue.

When Elton JOhn played the piano
and sang Candle in the Wind at the funeral service for Princess DiANA.

When I watched the live coverage
of President John F. Kennedy's funeral in DC and the riderless horse going all those long blocks. My heart was
breaking. I was 14.

Dr. Greene's death in Hawaii on ER.

On THE SHIELD last year, when
Sean killed LEM in the car and
then Mackey came and didn't realize
that one friend killed the other.
Powerful episode.

ON GRAY's when Denny died.

SOMEONE mentioned THE WIRE.
Many episodes this year made me
cry...those lost forgotten ghetto
kids.

THE movie DANCES WITH WOLVES.....
when Dunbar gets horribly beaten up
by the soldiers......and they
shoot his horse, Cisco.
AND in that film's final scene...where
Dunbar and Stands With a Fist have
to leave the tribe because he doesn't
want to endanger the village ...
A touching, historical film about the
last FREE decades of the Sioux.

There's an episode of the Waltons called "The Book Burning" which makes me bawl every time it's on tv. The preacher and the congregation want to make a statement against Hitler's rising powers in Europe and hold a book burning in protest of the ones in Europe. They unknowingly almost burn a copy of the Bible written in German and are horrified at what they did. It's one of the most moving episodes of that show.

After the Amish murders, there was a Nightline reporter filming on the scene who was talking about the victims and completely melted down on air. He never really regained his composure. He was so deeply sympathetic. It made me glad that he was the one there with them.

Ed Sun, Feb 11, 2007 at 11:59 PM EST

Scrubs - The episode where Michael J. Fox plays a doctor with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. At the end, he's repeatedly and compulsively washing his hands in a sink, hours after his shift has ended, aware that his disease is making him do it against his will. He finally roars in anger and frustration, and it was so clear that he was channeling the years of dealing with his Parkinson's - it was a very raw moment, really got to me.

maureeng Sun, Feb 11, 2007 at 11:59 PM EST

Most of the ones already mentioned here were great--thanks for the memories! Because I am such a softie, I don't "do" TV dramas but my sister who was hooked on ER made me watch the episode one Thanksgiving where the mentally ill patient knifes the young resident and he falls to the floor and then we all see what he does, the young intern already lying on the floor, white as a ghost and you know she's got to be dead and you're frantic that the resident is about to die too. I cried and cried over that one and I've never watched another episode of ER!
I also cried when I watched the video of the movie "Testament" starring Jane Alexander. The film tells the story of how one small Bay Area town near San Francisco slowly falls apart after a nuclear war. When the daughter who is dying of radiation poisoning asks her mom what it's like to make love with a man because she'll never get the chance to do so, I just lost it and had to leave the party. ARGH! I hate watching sad stuff.

dan Sun, Feb 11, 2007 at 11:58 PM EST

When John Hope (co-founder and hurricane expert) died on the weather channel. I don't know why that got me so much.
the movie "My Life" when he was at the fair and he anounced what day it was, said the doctors said he would be dead by then and every day from now on is a bonus. Also after he dies and his 2 or 3 year old son is watching one of the video tapes his father made while he was alive and he happily says "Daddy". that gets me every time.
50 first dates, when she looks out the window of the boat, and when she meets her daughter.
LOTR-when gimli says to legolas that he never thought he would die fighting next to a elf, and legolas say "how about next to a friend", and gimli says "aye, that I can do". Also when Aragorn say to the four hobbits near the end of the movie "my friends, you bow for no-one" and Aragorn and the entire court bows to the hobbits.
Thats enough for now. got to find a tissue.

Jose Weeden this has been a great thread until you posted your critical words. Until now, everyone had respected everyone else. Why did you feel the need to change that? Please respect that which others have feelings for.
I look forward to seeing what others have to say, no matter what the type of program nor their reasons.

sandyego Sun, Feb 11, 2007 at 11:56 PM EST

also, on LOST, the episode about Kate accidentally killing her old childhood friend, realizing all she went through to get that little toy plane. that episode, for whatever reason, made me cry and cry.

4) Boy Meets World - The finale when Mr. Feeney tells them to "do good"
5) 8 simple rules - When Cate gets the phone call about Paul's death.

A few sports moments also worth mentioning:
1) "After the accident in Turn 4 at the end of the Daytona 500 we've lost Dale Earnhardt."
2) Kerri Strug’s heroic performance at the 1996 Olympic Games

That Pedigree commercial, most certainly. I can't look at the TV when that comes on.

The Coca-Cola Olympic commercial from 1992 (I think) where the cross-country skiier from Lithuania is the first athlete to represent his country ever in an Olympic games, and others welcome him by giving him a Coke. Gets me every time.

Just two I can think of (though if anybody asks, I'll deny it);
- Locke's first episode in Lost, where the travel agent tells him he can't book his trip and Locke pushes himself away from the desk and yells"Nobody tells me what I can't do!" as we see that he's in a wheelchair just as the orchestral music swells...wow.
-Last five minutes of the Six Feet Under finale, starting when Claire sees recently-deceased Nate jogging in her side view mirror as she drives away from her home and family. Just wrenching.

This is old but on Cheers when Diane left Sam. Diane thought she was only going away for six months but Sam knew she would never come back. When she disappears behind the door, he says "Have a good life." Still makes me cry in reruns.

I make it through very few ER episodes without crying. Love's Labor Lost and Dr. Greene dying just about do me in. I can't believe this one hasn't been mentioned-at least I don't think so-Adriana getting killed on The Sopranos. I wasn't expecting it, and so it just made me bawl like a baby. The SATC finale was tear-inducing too. There's plenty more, I'm sure. Great subject!!

Buffy - "the body"..that episode was amazing...i cried through that entire episode. it was so real...there was no soundtrack for that episode so it was just them acting...that one continuous shot when buffy found her mom then calls the ambulance tosses cookies on the floor...opens the door to look outside...et all...that was really really well done...

also the other episode of buffy that made me cry was the 2nd death of buffy where she jumped to her death to save the world instead of dawn dying...

the northern exposure episode about the founding of the town "cisaly (sp)" also was a tearjerker...

dennys death and the subsequent episode with izzie on the floor made me cry and cry and cry

Anything 9/11. Still.
Futurama: Jurassic Bark. Watched it once, can't watch it again.
The Simpsons: Lisa's Substitute. When Mr. Bergstrom leaves, and how Homer tries (in his own way) to make things better.
E.R.: Love's Labout Lost. Passed through my head when my wife was having an emergency c-section.
Frasier: When Daphne and Niles finally get together. The awkward, shy guy gets the beautiful girl. Kinda like me.
The Wonder Years finale: Perfectly bittersweet finale for a perfectly bittersweet show.

When Radar left M*A*S*H I cried like a baby, unfortunately I only get to see it in reruns, but none the less, when he takes a look around and sees how its both horrible and perfect it is at the same time, it makes me think of times I've had to say goodbye to people who have made terrible times bearable. When Hawkeye gives him that bloody salute, I always lose it too. I could go on for hours about M*A*S*H, but this is probably the most powerful moment for me.
Also, the episode where Hawkeye gets in a jeep accident and the whole episode is just him ranting and raving in the house of a Korean family is amazing, and strangely profound.

In the movie, Schindler's List, there is a little girl in a red coat who is separated from her family as the Nazi soldiers clear the jews from the city. We see her running down the street away from them in one scene, the next scene she is hiding, in apiano, if I remember correctly. The next scene, we see just her coat on top of a pile of other coats in a wheel barrow. I cry through the rest of the movie and off and on for days afterward.

I cry at Hallmark commercials, but besides all the Gray's anatomy shows mentioned, there was one during the first season where there was an older woman brought in and they revived here when she had a DNR order. But I just remember here friends standing around her with either gray or izzie and the woman dies. Rather than dying alone, she had friends with her, just really got to me.
There are some Thursdays that I just don't watch the medical shows, cuz I know I will cry. Great walk down memory lane with this thread.

Wow...some great great comments here, and I NEVER read blog comments like this. But here is one everyone has overlooked, and it is very intense.

The Simpsons
Gradpa Simpson (Abe) gets a girlfriend at the old folks home. Homer is feeling guilty about ignoring Abe, so takes him out all the while not believing that Abe actually has a girlfriend. Girlfriend dies. Leaves a fortune to Abe. Abe tries to spend his way to happiness, but nothing fills the emptiness inside. At the end, he is leaving a casino, and notices the old people hobbling on their walkers into a waiting bus, and he looks as his own withered, gnarled hands.

Cut to the old floks home, ratte and decrepit. Transition to the same home, now sparkling and new. Abe throws open the door for the waiting seniors and says:

"C'mon in everyone. Dignity on me."

Kills me everytime.

I live in Oklahoma and some of you may remember this making national sports news. Oklahoma State University's plane went down (one of them) and some of the players as well as a local sportscaster named Bill Teegins, died. I cried so hard I gave myself a migraine.

If we are talking a fictional TV account, then I'd say on the second to last season of Angel, when David Boreanaz (Angel) allowed his son to go to a normal family and forget his past, and he stood outside the window of his son's house and smiled. I bawled even though introducing his son, Connor, was the shark they all jumped.

Episode of Buffy where here mother dies. I was in shock.

Only other show I haven't seen mentioned is "I'll Fly Away." There was a finale move/episode where Lilly, independent as always and now more worldly and sophisticated, goes back to the town where she had been a housekeeper. She reminisces with Forrest, and we see lots of flashbacks. It's wonderfully moving.

After worrying all day that John would not make it home and had possibly been involved in an accident, Patricia Neal's relief when he arrives safely home. I think Battlestar Galactica is the only TV show that's EVER been able to 'punch my ticket' on a regular basis. Season 1: Eps 4 and 5 when Starbuck has to admit to Adama that it was her fault that his younger son died. The honest way they played that scene with Starbuck racked with pain and guilt, needing forgiveness and Adama's crushing reply "Walk out of this cabin, while you still can.." gives me chills just thinking about it. Contrast that with the last scene of Ep 5 after Starbuck has been lost, and then found badly injured where the two are reconciled. No words, just a kiss on the forehead as she breaks down.

Just watching the kids from the past season of the Wire always pulled on your heart strings, but I think it really came to a peak when Sgt. Carver swore he would protect Randy after finding out that Randy was labeled a snitch on the streets. However one night two kids threw moltov cocktails into the window of Randy's foster mother's house seriously burning her, when Sgt. Carver finds out about this he goes to the hospital to see Randy sitting by his foster mother's bed. Obviously furious by yet another broken promise from an adult Randy starts yelling at Sgt. Carver saying stuff like "You're gonna help, huh... you're gonna look out for me?, Sgt Carver walks away but as he's walking away you can hear Randy yelling "You're gonna look out for me Sgt. Carver, you mean it? You're gonna look out for me? You promise? You got my back, huh?"....Its one of those scenes that will be with me for as long as I live.
