The bell tolls for 'Studio 60'

Feb 2, 2007, 05:44 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: TV Ratings

185345__perry_l Is Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip back at death's door? For a while, it appeared the show had been saved from cancellation, thanks to NBC's order for a full season's worth of episodes, a slight uptick in the ratings, and Aaron Sorkin's apparent recognition that his Monday night dramedy needed a change in direction. But this afternoon, there comes a press release from NBC that, if you read between the lines, suggests the series may be gone for good by the end of the month.

The press release announces the March 5 debut of the drama The Black Donnellys in Studio 60's timeslot. Now, that alone doesn't mean that Studio 60 is never coming back. But the same press release also notes that 30 Rock is giving up its space in March to Andy Richter's new comedy, Andy Barker, P.I., but is returning after just one month, on April 19. There's no fixed date for Studio 60 to resume; the release says merely that it "will return later this season on a date to be determined." Well, maybe it will, or maybe it'll come back in the summer to burn off the remaining episodes—or maybe NBC will air them only over the Internet.

Studio 60 gets a lot of flak on EW.com, including some from me in my TV Watch column, prompting some readers to ask why I write about the show every week if I hate it so much. I don't hate it, but I find it incredibly frustrating. All that talent—Sorkin, the blue-chip cast (led by Matthew Perry, pictured)—and all those lofty aspirations, marred by weak execution, lazy writing, dramatic issues that are hard to care about, and a lack of verisimilitude (these characters are comedy professionals, so where's the funny?). There are occasional laughs, and occasional moments of brilliance, but apparently not enough of them to keep people watching. Still, I (and many of you, I'm sure) keep tuning in every week, hoping that this will be the week the show finally lives up to its potential  for greatness. Better hurry up, Studio 60; you may have only four more weeks to dazzle us.

*shock* Fri, May 25, 2007 at 08:06 AM EST

has anyone noticed that Studio 60 was back on last night?!

Mongo Wed, Mar 21, 2007 at 08:40 PM EST

I love this show. Is there any way to get all our letters to NBC so they don't cancel this show? I've tried to log on to their site and it's almost impossible to find out where to write about a show!

Strt15 Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 09:16 AM EST

Oooooops -- sorry for the repeat

Strt15 Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 09:14 AM EST

I love S60, but I think that Aaron Sorkin was working with a gun to his head. It seemed as if the show was on a deathwatch almost from the beginning. If he had been allowed the time, and NBC had shown the patience -- the way they did with West Wing -- a good cast and developed plot lines would have brought it an audience. Adding in the time-shifted audience 1,000,000 more people watched and must have effected the audience. It is how good shows develop. It is how networks get better, and earn the respect of their audiences. I hope Jeff Zucker and his new execs can return to that formula.

Strt15 Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 09:00 AM EST

It would seem that Jeff Zucker and his new studio execs are bound and determined to do away with serious TV drama and replace with lame reality television show. They must be bound and determined to wipeout NBC altogether and really save GE some money. It is not enough to hire talented directors like Aaron Sorkin and Paul Haggis and then not give them time to work. While Black Donnellys clearly has an audience, it is not to my taste -- I’ve only watched a total of 30 minutes in two nights. I do like S60 better. But, if they could find the patience to let good people work well, allow plots to develop, and adjust casts -- the way they did in West Wing for example. They might actually improve NBC’s ratings. It is how some of the great shows developed.

ADM Sun, Mar 4, 2007 at 11:49 PM EST

If this show hadn't been all about Aaron Sorkin exorcising his demons with Kristen Chenoweth and become the Matt & Harriet Hour it could've been good. But instead, that tired drivel drove everybody away. I caught every episode and yet couldn't wait for it to be cancelled by the end. Harriet ruined the show in every way. Wrong actress, wrong way to style that actress, punching bag for Christianity, making her look hypocritical instead of merely complex and contradictory ... Matt, Danny, & Jordan made the show great. Harriet was the iceberg that sunk the Titanic.

Fabz in Chi town Tue, Feb 20, 2007 at 12:00 AM EST

Studio 60 is a great show. Very smart and full of subtext. People who work in a similar industry or perhaps who dream of working in the entertainment field (film students, anyone?..) Really appreciate the show. Anyhow, NBC needs to realize that many individuals (like me) download the episodes on itunes or perhaps on Tivo etc. Networks need to realize that the audience has many more way to check out what's there (look at HEROES graphic novels)/// Studio 60 is a very very good show and should not be cancelled. as far as the new TV show the Black Donnellys... it's not going to survive. . . I rather watch Law and Order. People need to Dream. We had enough of this physical and gratuitous violence. That's why Heroes is doing so well. Enough of these mindless comedy shows as well... Studio 60 has much more to say.

Thomas Zahler Sun, Feb 18, 2007 at 10:08 AM EST

I really like "Studio 60", but it got off to a slow start, and burdened itself with a TON of backstory. (Okay, there's this SNL show, these two writers who used to work there, here's a new programming head, and these two characters used to date…) And the first few episodes felt like Sorkin was goring every ox he'd missed being off TV for a few years. But, since the oft-mentioned Christmas episode, it's been the show I hoped it'd be when it premiered and found its rhythm.

I think what it needs more than anything is a change of night. I know it's stupid, but S60 is one of those shows that you need to really watch, not just have on. And by 10:00 on Monday, first day of the workweek and all that, my brain's shutting off and I'd be more ready for CSI: Miami or something less engaging. I think Wednesday nights in place of Medium, or Thursday to spell ER from a series of reruns for a few weeks, would help the show find an audience.

Paul Tue, Feb 13, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

NBC can't really cite ratings as a reason for Studio 60's cancellation if they go down that road. Here's why..it's not doing any worse than Friday Night Lights or 30 Rock. The only reason Studio 60 would be cancelled is because of the price it costs to make eipsodes. I would be perfectly fine with Studio 60 being cancelled as long as there is some kind of resolution to the storylines. Aaron Sorkin should just take advantage of the full season order and draft a series finale.

TJ Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 05:59 PM EST

30 Rock 30 Rock 30 Rock.

The poor show is struggling against GA and CSI.

Tina Fey is brilliant. Please support 30 Rock even if you do or don't support Studio 60. It's so funny!

Joel Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 12:35 PM EST

I like the show, but it's certainly not *brilliant* like you Sorkin fanboys seem to think. Some of you people have your heads so far up Aaron Sorkin's ass that you overlook all of the problems with this show.

Samuel Alexander Wed, Feb 7, 2007 at 01:07 PM EST

You guys are nothing but some grey's anatomy loving morons

james Tue, Feb 6, 2007 at 02:49 PM EST

I think Studio 60 is a brilliant show. It's not made for stupid people who like "the simple life" or trash like that. It's an intelligent comedy aimed at intelligent people. The actors are amazing, it's well written, it makes me laugh, and it's one of my favourite shows on TV. I would be very sad to see it go. I think it is well written and i do care about the stories between the characters. Maybe if they move the show to another night so that it is not up against CSI:miami, it might do better, i hope Studio 60 stays on the air.

sasha Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 09:50 PM EST

OK, I like the show. There. I said it. It's one of the three shows I don't ever miss. Give it a chance to grow, please?

Friday Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

People are still making tv shows with Richter? I have not interest in him whatsoever.

still hopeful Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 11:30 AM EST

Count me among those who agree with Foghorn Leghorn (great handle!), Greta, and Gary: I do not hate the show; I am just enormously frustrated that it has not lived up to its potential, and sadly, probably never will.

I see three roads: 1) AS gets it together and S60 improves; 2) S60 continues to stumble along; or 3) NBC cancels it soon. I strongly hope for #1, but if not, I would vastly prefer #3 to #2, so I do not waste any more of my limited TV watching time than necessary.

AS's biggest mistake was to focus on the romances before the audience really grew to care about the characters. I think this was a panic move to attract viewers when the initial ratings were not great. (I am amazed how many posters on Lost websites seem to care most about whether Kate will choose Jack or Sawyer). Some comedy that is actually funny would be nice, but for me the best episodes have been the ones about the FCC battle, and those with John Goodman. Perhaps there is still time.

junior Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST

This show is still on. Sorry, I always say that when EW talks about "S60." Anyway, I can't believe I'm saying this given that the show is created by (ugh, gulp, gasp) Paul Haggis, but I'm looking forward to "The Black (Not in an African-American Kind of Way) Donnellys." I read an article on it and it looks pretty interesting. But that's not even the important thing. Why doesn't NBC realize that "Medium" should go back to Monday at 10 after "Heroes" and "Donnellys" should be paired with the similarly youthful "Friday Night Lights." They pay these TV execs so much to make stupid decisions.

step Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 10:48 AM EST

Everyone seems to be talking about Studio 60 (I could take or leave the show), but no one seems to be talking about THE BLACK DONNELLYS.

This show could take pretty much any timeslot out there and I'd be cool with it. (The exceptions being FNL and The Office.) I've been waiting for this show since the summer, and I'm so glad that it's finally going to get its chance. Hurrah!

Greta Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 10:47 AM EST

"Studio 60" draws way more hatred than it deserves; it's flawed, but it's not horrible, and the way some people carry on, you'd think Aaron Sorkin had personally set their houses on fire. That said, I always think people who proclaim "Studio 60" the "best show on TV" are not watching any other TV, because there are a LOT of quality shows on television right now. There's better characterization, better romantic comedy, better issue-oriented conflict: It's all out there for you if you turn the dial. I wanted "Studio 60" to be better than it is; everyone is so talented, and Matthew Perry is giving a brilliant performance. Given more time, Sorkin might fix it. But this is the most expensive drama on TV, and the investment isn't paying off in viewers or quality. NBC's not wrong if they let this one go.

wemoonwitch Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 05:43 AM EST

I can't believe they're giving up this quickly. Studio 60 is the only show I watch on network T.V.. It's smart, funny, and the actors are all superb. I think it might take some people more time to catch on to the humor (because it's so fast-paced). With every show I get more invested in the characters. NBC really needs to give this show more time for people to get hooked in. It's not like most shows where you're ENTERTAINED from the second you start watching, but that's part of what makes it so much better than other network shows. I really hope NBC knows that.

Audge Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 03:18 AM EST

Bummer... this show's pretty good.

Jane Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 01:41 AM EST

Hey Joey, "Cancel Studio 60" is my line, but thanks for joining in on the chorus. Mozz, great point- if NBC is sinking their money into this garbage, that means they aren't putting the money into ten other shows that might actually attempt to entertain the audience, rather than insult it. Come on NBC, do the right thing and cancel this stinker.

Joey Jo Jo Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 01:37 AM EST

Clearly, half the world likes this show, while half the world doesn't. Yet half the world isn't watching this show, because even the people who like it have better things to do than watch this sanctimonious drivel. And again I say: Cancel Studio 60!

paige Sun, Feb 4, 2007 at 06:04 PM EST

i hate this show! please put it out of its misery. Who would've thought that the uneven 30 rock wouldve one this race. i know why: 30 rock is funny and has potential interest. Studio 60 is painfully unfunny and uninvolving. I just don't care. and yes, i have seen many episodes until I realized I was wasting my time.

Jenn Sun, Feb 4, 2007 at 05:46 PM EST

so sad that one of the smartest shows in a long time will be cancelled b/c of rating. NBC, how stupid are you?

DaWitt Sun, Feb 4, 2007 at 04:57 PM EST

It's intelligent, it's funny, it's even a bit risky. By all means, take it off the air without hesitation!

That hour would be better spent on more slapstick drivel, mindless violence or Nascar.

Mozz Sun, Feb 4, 2007 at 03:00 PM EST

Okay, so I don't think the show is great, nor that bad, and i appreciate that people think it's the best show ever. I am however surprised it's been kept on for this long. Let's face it, TV/networks are a Business, and it's part of that business to cancel what is not working. If Studio 60, were cheaper (right now its the most expensive drama in tv history.) Then the network could consider giving it some breathing space. But it's losing money on its own, and dragging advertising revenue, which could be used to improve the hit shows like "heroes" or create better programming. I'm sorry to say this, but STUDIO 60 is a big, expensive, debt increasing show for NBC, and in terms of business sense NBC has to cancel it. Like i said, purely logical business decision.

Mike Sun, Feb 4, 2007 at 11:41 AM EST

Wanted to like Studio 60, but it is just so self-consciously hip (and therefore painfully unhip - the Rolling Stones movie... just embarrassing) as well as unendingly pretentious. And the show within the show is horrible and unfunny.

Cliff Sun, Feb 4, 2007 at 10:45 AM EST

30 Rock is literally having the last laugh. Go Tina Fey!

segsig Sun, Feb 4, 2007 at 08:50 AM EST

It has a lot of problems, but it's still better than anything else on TV. I just wish Sorkin had kept it to the premise of a drama about backstage of a show...not the whole freaking network. All that extra cast and storyline took away from charachter development and story for all.

Go Colts! Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 11:38 PM EST

"Mad TV" did an excellent parody of this show under the guise of Aaron Sorkin makes a porn movie. That skit summed up why Studio 60 is such a turn off (the "walk & talk", Sorkin's self indulgent writing, etc). Michael McDonald is brilliant.

AG Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 08:31 PM EST

They better not cancel it. I hate getting addicted to doomed shows.

cchatrbox Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 07:11 PM EST

I don't think S60 was meant to be funny...although it is at times. I thought it was more about the issues and problems surrounding people that are incredible funny and write incredibly funny comedy shows...how do they do that? Remain funny when their life's are exploding..Take Robin Williams for example. Incredibly funny..yet battling the demon-Alcoholism. That's what I thought S60 was about...And not every show is great from the jump..yea keep moving it around or suspending its showing..and it will lose ratings..cause nobody can find when it's on...I hope you hold on to this one a little longer..I think it has great potential!! But keep it on..and in one place each week..so we can find it!!!!!

Rebecca Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 05:58 PM EST

I wish Aaron Sorkin had found a way to get us to think and get us to laugh at the same time. I still reach for my Sports Night DVDs on a regular basis and hope for the best with S60.

Sam Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 05:24 PM EST

I wanted to like Studio 60, I really did. But the last episode was my last episode. I don't care about the Jordan character (Mandy from West Wing comes to mind) and I certainly do not care about her battle with the other one over reality tv. The acting of the comedy show cast is great, lots of potential but who cares about the head office stuff? The takeover, freedom of speech, reality tv - where does any of this fit into the "backstage at a comedy show," I wonder? The show needs a focus.

NYC Girl Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 04:56 PM EST

I like it, but I don't think I'd be hugely devastated if it was canceled. I'm disappointed to hear about 30 Rock. I didn't start watching it until a month and a half or so ago, and I've really come to like it.

Jen H Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 03:22 PM EST

I like Studio 60. I have never been disappointed--probably b/c I wasn't watching it for laugh out loud humor. I think it's entertaining enough how seriously the comedy people (the writers and actors of S60) take the whole process of "making comedy". I feel pretty confident that behind the scenes at Sat. Night Live is a lot more like Studio 60 w/ red tape and drama than it is funny and chuckles. I like the characters, the humor (intelligent and witty, not slapstick) and the actors. I'll be sad if Studio 60 gets the ax.

Paige Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 03:09 PM EST

I was really starting to get into the show up to and into the Christmas episode.

The episodes since then have been boring to me. I've already tuned out. Sorry, Aaron!

hamster Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 02:15 PM EST

I like Studio 60 for the very fact that it is different from most of the other shows on tv right now. We don't need another Law & Order or CSI. I think Matthew Perry is one of the most underrated actors on tv, and the chemistry between him and Bradley Whitford is amazing. That being said, I'm becoming less and less interested in the "issues" of the plot. Evangelical Christianity? Is that all that defines Harriet? Does an African American writer ONLY have to write for an African American comic? And why can't every episode be as good as the Christmas episode? If the show is cancelled, I will miss it, but I wish I would miss it more. (If NBC were to cancel "Friday Night Lights" I would really be upset.)

sara Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

Marlene, if you can't handle hearing differing opinions, you may want to stay away from message boards. Many people have difficulty seeing a show with such enormous potential suffering from such lazy writing. You don't mind it and that's your choice. But to scream, "don't watch it if you don't like it" is not only ridiulous, but also completely missing the point.

LisaMama Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 12:32 PM EST

I gave up on it a while ago, but my husband still likes it, so we watch it. I keep thinking about its Sports Night, West Wing pedigree, its amazing cast, and wonder "why isn't this better?"

Marlene Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

If you don't like the show, don't watch it..............There are other things you can watch. I love the show and would miss it. Just like the other shows that get canceled because of people like you who can't keep there computers keys alone. WATCH SOMETHING ELSE..

Kim Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 12:06 PM EST

For those of you who say you'll stop watching NBC if they cancel Studio 60, I have two words: The Office. I could never swear off NBC as long as this wonderful show is still on the air.

sara Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

the fact is Studio 60 had enormous potential to be a great show. However, Sorkin turned it into a mind-numbing mess, with painfully boring characters (Harriet) and filled the storylines with topics no one cared about. Matt and Danny have great chemistry together - why do they never have more than 10 second scenes together any more?? There is nothing remotely humourous about these supposed comedy writers, and the relationship storylines are dull and pointless. and never-ending.

What NBC needs to do is keep the show and hire some writers who have a clue what makes a show watchable. And give these hugely talented actors something to do and say.

colbyfan Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 11:37 AM EST

I enjoy Studio 60 but I am okay with it being cancelled in lieu of Friday Night Lights and 30 Rock. The latter shows have great potential and I just don't see it for Studio 60. That being said, I hope someone finds a starring vehicle for Steven Weber who is a consistent standout in the Studio 60 cast.

Mark Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

To Elizabeth -- LUST FOR VIOLENCE??? Stop trying to stoke your little pet issue and get over it! If "lust for violence" had anything to do with what Americans watch 24 would be the most watched show on television instead of American Idol. Studio 60's ratings are low because the show stinks.

Ben Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 10:54 AM EST

Studio 60 is the one show that I have tuned into every week and never been disappointed. Yes, a number of plot lines have been weak but every show has its ups and downs. I think that for a writer who spent many years in drama mode on the West Wing, Sorkin is doing a great job in trying to master the dramedy. I loved last week's episode. I watched with my boyfriend and he fell in love with the show right away. Studio 60 is the only show I watch on NBC so if it's dropped then, and I think there will quite a few people with me on this one, I'll be one more lost viewer for NBC (and they really can't afford to lose viewers right now!).

Elizabeth Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 09:32 AM EST

Lack of viewers for Studio 60 says more about America, and our lust for violence right now, than it does about the quality of the show.

Please, please keep it on. It's the most interesting, and intelligent show on TV. Aron Sorkin is an amazing writer. The cast is excellant!

If Studio 60 goes, TV goes...at least at my house.

Barry Stinson Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 06:15 AM EST

Well done, Brandy - I couldn't have said it any better!

Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 05:05 AM EST

Sorkin's big mistake was making a show about the comedy show. It's too hard to pull off. Instead the show should have been about the NBS Network (this come in..but it feels like a distraction). The Comedy show could play a part in one or two episodes. But the plot line about the FCC and the "swearing soldier" would be a great deal more interesting if the show did not have to feel the need to incorporate the "comedy show" issues.

snarky Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 01:50 AM EST

Let it go, the show continues to dissapoint. Besides the superior tone of the show, the casting is a mess. NBC-you have a chance to redeem yourself by sticking with "Friday Night Lights."

Fatima Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 01:24 AM EST

Ang Knee - EXACTLY! I said in the last Anti-60 post (done this week!) that by slamming a show for being smug, Susman is being even more smug. He thinks he's above what people are supposed to be perceiving as intelligent. And while most don't think 60 is smart, it still has that reputation. So basically Susman thinks he's above than intelligence.

Serious Susman I normally like you, but you GOTTA stop bashing this show every other day. You aren't going anywhere. Everyone knows what you think. Everyone comments the same way and you always get your way. All that you do is just shame the few of us who are trying to enjoy a show that people won't allow us to. Can you pick a new topic. Or at least go back to overpraising the sci-fi flavor of the week?

Melissa Sutherland Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 12:45 AM EST

Studio 60 should be kept on just for moments like the Christmas Show. Well written, beautifully acted, and incredibly moving, especially the story line about the New Orleans musicians. Nothing like it on any other show or network. Please keep your hands off our show!

Ang Knee Sat, Feb 3, 2007 at 12:38 AM EST

A lot of the criticism of Studio 60 has been much more pretentious, lazily written, preachy, and pleased with itself than the show has been. A lot of it also has been bad-tempered, while the show is good-hearted and fun.

Alex Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 11:39 PM EST

I was excited to start watching two new shows this year: Studio 60 and Friday Night Lights. I enjoy Studio 60 sometimes, but it sure isn't magic in a bottle. I agree with whoever said Aaron Sorkin should be the one fired, because I like the actors but don't care much for the writing. Nor do I care much about the characters.

I would be fine with Studio 60 staying on the air, but it isn't a must-watch by any means. Given the choice between keeping this show and keeping Friday Night Lights, I'd choose the latter in a heartbeat. I kind of feel like The Bachelorette during the final rose ceremony: there are two choices left, a witty and articulate guy in a tux who went to the right schools, and a gruff, soulful musician in a football sweatshirt. Given my background, people would expect me to take the guy in a tux...but the guy in the sweatshirt stole my heart.

Tyler Dean Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 11:28 PM EST

Studio 60 is NOT the best show on TV, but neither is Brothers and Sisters. And damned if I'm not thrilled when I find a new episode of either on my DVR. They are BOTH entertaining shows, with interesting characters, and I hate to break it to everybody, but as somebody who works in the sketch comedy world for a living, there not a lot of comedy backstage. It's always DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA.

foghorn leghorn Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 10:47 PM EST

Why do people often think that because they don't like a show, it's got to be the worst show? Obviously, not everyone thinks the same. Does this mean everyone hating on GA is more intelligent or has a grasp on what's good or not? I think not..
Perhaps I wasn't specific enough in my first post so here goes my second attempt. Personally, I don't like Studio 60, to me, the writing is lame and uninteresting. I don't think it's the worst show out there, who knows what show is..but at least to me, it's just plain boring.

Perhaps it has to do with Matthew Perry and his connection to FRIENDS, one of the most racist shows of the 90s (how many people believe minorites are a minority in NYC and not a majority?!) so maybe I am being unfairly biased.

nathan Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 10:47 PM EST

Studio 60 will be missed about as much as Standoff is.

E-Man Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 09:36 PM EST

First off, I think we all agree GA is not the best or worst show on television. Secondly, Studio 60 is a tough show to watch, in my opinion. I've tried sitting through episodes, but the hallways keep distracting me (how many feet of hallway can you fit in a sketch show, anyways?) However, the cast is excellent and make the show stand out completely. Honestly, Aaron Sorkin should be the one fired.

rosie Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 09:15 PM EST

You think GA rocks and I don't. It is just not my cup of tea. GA is just popular right now. I just don't like it. I have tried and it just did not do it for me. I did not like Studio 60 when it started, but now I do.

Sean Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 08:57 PM EST

Studio 60 is the best show on TV right now, if they dump it I may have to stop watching NBC all together.

Fatima Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 08:49 PM EST

I don't get why people who don't like it are trying to get it cancelled. Can't you just let sleeping dogs lie?

And ditto to the Grey's Anatomy commenter. That is by far the worst show on television. I'd take Studio 60 over that any day.

Jerimy Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 08:46 PM EST

Dude, please don't cancel this show. I'm still not over Arrested Developments early exit.

MJ Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 08:42 PM EST

This just figures. I didn't like this show when it started, but kept watching because I liked the cast and wanted to see the direction it was headed. Now with Jack standing up against the FCC for a time delay, and the possible Danny/Jordan romance, I'm hooked, and look forard to the next episode. I hope they at least allow them to finish out a full season's worth of episodes.

noneya Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 08:31 PM EST

Nobody watches 'Snoozio 60' because the show is as good as it's sketches are funny. But where, o' where, will we get our fix of well-dressed white liberals walking-down hallways really fast while spewing sanctimonious-bull$hit?

mike Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 08:21 PM EST

The next time I find a new show that has fast pacing and SOME intelligence. I will run, not walk away.
Jane-Just curious, what shows do you really like? We can write to have those cancelled as well.

Studio 60 is the only reason I watch NBC but here's the bigger question: Why is the media so obsessed with writing about it? Surely there's other things to talk about besides one network show.

Personally, I think that if no one knew that Aaron Sorkin was attached, that the media wouldn't hit the show so hard.

The ep on 1/22 was the strongest I've seen, and finally met the high expectations I think everyone had for this show. They used Bradley Whitford and Steven Weber. Hallelujiah! And Tom wasn't preaching about something. Thank you...Of course, this past week wasn't as strong, but I'm going to keep watching.

I can't wait for the day that I don't have to type this anymore, but here it is: Cancel Studio 60.

How dare you, GA rocks! Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 07:48 PM EST

Rosie, I watch both GA and S60 and both are top quality televison or at least better then 90% of the dribble on (AI,24,CSI+++). Is it any wonder why most people can't relate to it? They've all settled for mediocrity! If they cancel it, I just hope they wrap up the plotlines and not leave me hanging!

A show about the backrooms antics of a comedy sketch show?

There's probably room enough for just one of them and it's called 30 Rock and it's brilliant!

Unlike Aaron Sorkin, Tina Fey actually WAS part of a comedy sketch show so she knows what she's writing about.

30 Rock isn't doing great in the ratings either, so let's all dump the horrible Studio 60 and unite behind 30 Rock.

Why watch a dramedy about a comedy show when you can watch a comedy about a comedy show?

PSIchotic Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 07:13 PM EST

If this ends up getting pulled, I would be bummed... there are only two new shows from this year that I've enjoyed - Studio 60 and Friday Night Lights (which has really grown on me.) I don't object (as others have) to the fact that this show based on a comedy sketch show isn't funny... I enjoy the good performances and sharp dialogue. Along with FNL and Criminal Minds, Studio 60 is the only scripted show I make sure to catch each week.

I don't understand why people hate the show so much. Grey's Anatomy is the worst piece of overrated trash on TV and people seem to just love that stink fest. Seriously, Seriously and (wait for it) Seriously.

Kristi Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 06:47 PM EST

hhhmm again, i'm a rare bread! I love Studio 60! I can't explain it really but i just plain love it, maybe i'm too easy to please but i just think it's so smart! Love the banter, love the characters!

Jaime Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 06:43 PM EST

Well, good riddance to Studio 60. But if NBC even THINKS about canceling 30 Rock, I can't be held responsible for my reaction.

Ceballos Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 06:37 PM EST

What I took out of this item: 30 Rock is going away for a month!? No! Oh well, I like Andy Richter, so it should be fine.

Dana Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 06:36 PM EST

NBC could have saved itself the money that it took from promoting this horrible piece of obnoxious television by pulling it after the third episode. Thank god they're coming around... Worst show of the year? how about worst show of the decade...

MikeknaJ Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 06:35 PM EST

I really was rooting for Matthew Fox but, in the words of Chandler Bing, could this show BE any more pretentious and un-funny?

30 Rock Rules Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 06:25 PM EST

Studio 60= this year's Cop Rock, minus the entertainment value!

foghorn leghorn Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 06:20 PM EST

You don't have to tell jokes to be funny and you certainly don't need to rely on slapstick comedy to be funny either, having said that, Studio 60 is a big disappointment and probably the biggest snoozefest on tv at the moment. I tried liking it, I forced myself to watch several episodes but it just bores me to tears and since I can't relate or bring myself to care about the characters and their lives, then I end up watching something else.. like the I-95 traffic camera station which ends up being far more entertaining than Studio 60.

Snake Moaner Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 06:18 PM EST

Good riddance to bad, boring rubbish!

Fatima Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 06:18 PM EST

AND YOU'RE JUST LOVING THIS!

Brandy Yearous Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 05:57 PM EST

I think Studio 60 is one of the top three shows on television. Here's why:

1.It's not a reality show. HA HA
2.You can get slapstick funny on ANY 1/2 hour comedy. They are boring and predictable. Studio 60 is maturely funny.
3.It moves quickly, and the banter is hilarious!

Funny isn't just what they say. It's how they react and the expressions on their faces. These actors are brilliant and because they aren't telling jokes it's going to get pulled and that's sad.
