Who is Grammy's most-anticipated performer?

Feb 9, 2007, 02:12 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Grammys

Flatts_l The Grammys will be handed out Sunday (check out our coverage here), but we won't know who scored the most-talked about performance until Monday morning. Who will it be? The show-opening Police? Justin Timberlake and the lucky "My Grammy Moment" competition winner? Rascal Flatts?

Now hold on, there. Someone's excited to see the country trio perform. (And not just Kelly Clarkson, who's such a fan she covers them live and has joined them onstage.) They were, after all, 2006's top-selling act. And when I chatted with lead singer Gary LeVox (pictured, right, with bandmate Joe Don Rooney) last week, he gave me a reason not to make their tribute to country rock a bathroom break:

"We’re gonna do 'Hotel California' and 'Life in the Fast Lane,'" LeVox told me before sounding genuinely concerned that he'll confuse the words to the latter Eagles hit with those of his band's recent cover "Life is a Highway." He continued, "Please put a TelePrompTer up: 'Life in the Fast Lane,' Gary, not 'Life is a Highway.' See, it's not like a regular concert where you can go, 'Sing it!' and hold the mic out [to the audience]. Mary J. and them would be sitting there goin,' 'I think he screwed up. That's the wrong song, I believe, right there.'"

Maybe LeVox can throw it to Carrie Underwood, who'll also take part in that country rock tribute. Or to one of the night's other performers, who include Mary J. Blige, Ludacris, and Earth, Wind & Fire in another tribute; Chris Brown, Lionel Richie, and Smokey Robinson, who'll handle the tribute to great male R&B artists; and such performers as James Blunt, T.I., Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, the Dixie Chicks, Gnarls Barkley, John Legend, John Mayer, Corinne Bailey Rae, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Shakira and Wyclef Jean.

Which performance will you make a point not to miss?

i am a publisher on music row in nashville. rascal flatts will forever suck, but i must admit that i wouldn't mind getting a cut on their next album. unfortunately, our small catalog doesn't have any time-tested tunes by tom cochrane or the eagles, and i've never been able to bring myself to hire the sort of writer who composes something the guys at lyric street would have rascal flatts record.

steve Sat, Nov 24, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

wow i am really amazed at how many people like rascal flatts. They sound like a backstreet boys knock off band.Their writing is terrible, not to mention gary is a terrible singer.Well let me phrase it better he can sing, his voice is terrible no soul sounds like he has no onions if you know what i mean.

Jacob Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 06:20 PM EST

Chrisitna ALWAYS gets the best reviews when she sings. So I want to see her again, especially after that Man's World performance. For someone who is short, she surely knows how to bring up a show.

FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN GOD STOP
AND LISTEN TO THE WORDS OFALL THEIR
SONGS IT REVOLVES AROUND THE SCRIPTURES.
I HAD LIVED EVERY SONG THEY MADE AS
A CHILD AND YOU CAN'T GET AND BETTER
THAN THAT.
GOD GAVE THEN A JOB TO DO AND THEY
ARE DOING IT.

Mrs. Levox Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

Mrs. LeVox Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 11:45 AM EST

OMG Stephanie. Gary Levox is the coolest person in country music? who are you looking at? cause i see a hot guy with the best voice EVER! and im positive that im not the only one. beside the point,,.... Rascal Flatts did a great cover on ' Hotel California' and rascal flatts and carrie sound better than RF and kelly. but kelly and martina are awesome! Oops.. there i go again...

jessie Wed, Mar 7, 2007 at 06:46 AM EST

yeah, their FAM base will eventually find you.

Dreamin_bout_DeMarcus Tue, Mar 6, 2007 at 10:56 PM EST

RASCAL FLATTS ROCK. end of story. they did a great job at the Grammy's, but what else is new? and Gary has an amazing voice and range- he can sing better than most singers out there, in any genre. Joe Don did once say, "we make music for the fans, not the critics" so you guys should keep the criticism to yourselves... us FAM members will hunt you down :P haha, jk

Sarah Tue, Mar 6, 2007 at 01:33 PM EST

I dont care what anyone one says Rascal Flatts is the best and the awards can prove it!

courtney Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 09:58 PM EST

JoeDonsSnowAngel Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 07:47 PM EST

Deff Rascal Flatts! They are one of the hardest working artists out there right now! They don't need this crap! And just lettin' ya know, his name's GARY

Amber Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 05:27 PM EST

How weak can you people possibly get. Rascal Flatts work their butts off and all they get is bad crap thrown back at them...its pathetic. Its a good thing they guys know how to take critics comments and forget em all. I think people need to see that the Flatts are one of the most popular COUNTRY groups out there. Their hits soar up, their albums sell millions, they win tons of awards, and they see their fans through and through like no other, but some people still have to give them loads of crap.

JoeDonsBabyGirl1 Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 03:02 PM EST

I admit that I am a Rascal-holic and I am proud of it. I love those guys and always will!! Not only are they incredible song writers and artists but they are also some of the most genuinely nicest guys you could ever meet. To those of you that don't "GET IT" please keep the rude comments to yourself! Thanks!! :-)

crystle Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 02:02 PM EST

I think before you pick on Rascal Flatts, you should look at your own favorite band/artist and think, have they acheieved the stardom and Jay DeMarcus, Joe Don Rooney and GARY LEVOX

Shyla Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

Wow...how pathetic.... How can Rascal Flatts suck with 6 awards won this year? Jealously...thats the key word for Flatt Haters. As for the "lead singer"..he has a name, Gary LeVox ;). Best singer in country music, nasaly? Maybe, thats what makes him different. In a great way, he has the best vocal range that no other singer can compair to. :D Go Flatts.

jessie Mon, Mar 5, 2007 at 10:05 AM EST

come on! those people who say Rascal Flatts sucks are missing' out! if you think they stink, please DO NOT post!!! some of us would be more happier if you wouldn't post such rude comments!

Alana Sun, Mar 4, 2007 at 08:55 PM EST

Rascal Flatts rocked! They are so great. Carrie was good with them too.

Dr BLT Thu, Feb 22, 2007 at 02:16 AM EST

Well, you knew a parody was going to happen. It was just a matter of when. Introducing:

Not Ready to Make Rice
(Dixie Chicks Nix Mix)
Dr BLT
words and music by Dr. BLT (c)2007
http://www.drblt.net/music/MakeRice.mp3

I call my style of commenting blog n roll. I hope you all like it.

Dr BLT Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

I believe that the Dixie Chicks will bounce back, thanks to the political friends they know in high places that seem to have pulled a few strings for them prior to the Grammys, as I've noted in this song:

Playin' Politics (With the Dixie Chicks)

Stephanie Mon, Feb 12, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

Someone has to tell the lead singer of Rascal Flatts to get a new do. He looks like the old Dell computers spokesperson after a three month munchie fiesta.

pat Sun, Feb 11, 2007 at 11:30 PM EST

what is the name of Christinas song?

Julia Sun, Feb 11, 2007 at 10:37 PM EST

what was that love song and who is the artist before the christina aguilera performance?

Toots Sun, Feb 11, 2007 at 09:58 PM EST

Ok, so I am now 2 hours into the Grammy's. I am just wondering , since when did any of the Rock categories get shifted down with the spoken word albums and opera awards? What about performers like Beck, Tom Petty, the Raconteurs etc etc. This is extremely disappointing. Police a group who hasn't played together for many years, gets one song in the beginning of the show and that is it. It is extremely frustrating to see that popular categories displayed on the bottom of the screen like they are scores and highlights on ESPN. I won't be watching next year.

Karin Sun, Feb 11, 2007 at 05:13 PM EST

Rascal Flatt, no doubt
They are the greatest....something one can listen too all day long

Nathan Sun, Feb 11, 2007 at 03:26 PM EST

I guess the Police will be fun to watch, but the only reason I'm really watching is to get my fix of RHCP.

Deanna Sun, Feb 11, 2007 at 12:19 PM EST

Without a doubt, The Police reunion will be the ONLY reason to watch.

Keith Sat, Feb 10, 2007 at 08:19 PM EST

The Flats suck all their songs sound the same and that horrible voice the singer has ugh
I'm ready to see the Chicks win, also Christina and the Police.Sting rules!!

ppl Sat, Feb 10, 2007 at 08:18 PM EST

the Flatts are the worst thing to come out of Nashville, if only the lead singer could get all the nasal sound away once and for all maybe things would be different. Go Mayer and Chicks and Carrie.

Sandra Sat, Feb 10, 2007 at 08:55 AM EST

I can't wait to hear The Police, RHCP, and the Dixie Chicks.

cookiemac Sat, Feb 10, 2007 at 08:33 AM EST

I'm voting for the Rascal Flatts performance. Been a fan of theirs for years, and can honestly say that for each one of their cd's I can listen to without skipping any songs. The more you listen to it, the more you love it. Can't wait to see the Dixie Chicks as well. Canada loves ya Chicks!

Rich Sat, Feb 10, 2007 at 04:17 AM EST

Carrie Underwood!!!

Roman Sat, Feb 10, 2007 at 01:05 AM EST

Carrie Underwood! Although, the Dixie Chicks should kick *ss too. Meh on Rascal Flatts though.

Travis Sat, Feb 10, 2007 at 12:27 AM EST

RASCAL FLATTS AND CARRIE UNDERWOOD ALL THE WAY!

Linda from KS Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 11:13 PM EST

Definitely RASCAL FLATTS. For those of you who haven't seen them in concert, they put on a great show. I should know, I took my 15-year-old daughter to 4 concerts last year - in 4 different states! RASCAL ROCKS!

Jenny Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 10:19 PM EST

Oh, DEFIANTLY Rascal Flatts/Carrie and Carrie own performance to! I LOVE Carrie and Rascal Flatts!

Mike in Moncton Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 07:49 PM EST

THE POLICE!

Anyone thinking that's not going to be THE premiere event at the Grammys is kidding themselves. I'll watch that then turn the channel when it's over.

Liz Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 06:43 PM EST

All about Justin. I'm so over John Mayer -- I can't stomach his once-beautiful lyrics now that he's with Simpson -- don't take him seriously anymore :-) All about Justin.

will Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 06:15 PM EST

the john mayer, corinne bailey rae, john legend trio

Ernesto Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 06:07 PM EST

It's all about the Dixie Chicks, in fact I don't understand why the article was centered on a group whose lead singer's sound is as nasal as Fran Drescher.Seriously the Chicks are going to bring the house down, they are at a standing ovasion waiting to happen.

Ryan Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 05:46 PM EST

The only reason I'll tune in at all is RHCP.

BKIII Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 04:35 PM EST

Without a doubt, The Police!

Chris Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 04:33 PM EST

Christina, THE POLICE, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Mary J. Blige.

Lisa Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 04:30 PM EST

I haven't watched the Grammys in years, but I'll be watching for The Police this year.

Vicky Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 04:28 PM EST

I wish the Grammy's would have asked Imogen Heap to perform. I know she only has two nominations and she's still pretty indie, but she was amazing in concert. I mean she was just getting over strep throat and was still fantastic.

Lisa Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 04:19 PM EST

Justin & Mary J. I am sick of Rascal Flatts; every time a show is on, there they are, the same remake, the same handclaps, UGH!!!!!!! Gross lead singer, icky.

Christina Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 04:17 PM EST

Rascal Flatts/Carrie Underwood

Pete Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

The Police - no question.

Mia Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

The Police and John Mayer/ Corinne Bailey Rae/ John Legend perform.

tri Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 04:09 PM EST

dixie chicks all the way! plus my girl MJB

Janean Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 04:01 PM EST

John Mayer!

MIMI Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 03:44 PM EST

Definitely The Police...all the rest you can see anytime. Can't wait until they announce the tour dates.

Jim Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 03:32 PM EST

Just seeing Sting, Stewart and Andy on stage together will make the evening for me. I'm sure these 50-something gentlmen are going to rock the house in a manner that all the night's other performers can only dream of equalling.

Cece Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 03:32 PM EST

Mary is not to be missed.

Aw Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 03:15 PM EST

Kelly Clarkson should perform. I'm dying waiting for the next CD!!!

silv Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 02:38 PM EST

MARY J. Does anyone remember her No more drama performance from a few years ago. FLAWLESS. I can't wait to see what she will do this year

Jenny Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 02:35 PM EST

I love the Dixie Chicks. Can't wait to see them rock the house and kick some Grammy butt.

NineDaves Fri, Feb 9, 2007 at 02:19 PM EST

XTina always tears it up!
