A backhanded compliment to Jennifer Hudson from the fashion world

Feb 15, 2007, 11:06 AM | by Michelle Kung

Categories: 'American Idol', Film, Music, Oscars 2007

Jhud_l After scoring a Golden Globe, a SAG award, a BAFTA, and almost assuredly, an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in Dreamgirls, what else is there for Jennifer Hudson to win? Why, a Vogue cover, of course. The American Idol also-ran is not only the fashion glossy's first full-figured cover gal, but only its third African-American — for Vogue's power issue, no less. (Interesting that the mag should hit the stands at the same time as Dreamgirls' costar Beyoncé's similarly historic Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue cover. Upstaged again by Hudson!)

So why does J.Hud, who has been rocking the red carpet in Vera Wang and others, look so... awkward? Decked out in a red satiny number, the actress is pictured leaning forward, mouth open, chin out and up, and her cleavage front and center. Given the significance of the shot, you'd think the magazine would have chosen a flattering angle, especially since celeb-shooter extraordinaire Annie Leibovitz was the photog for the gallery, and editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley has been been styling and promoting Hudson all season. (You can see more of the spread here.) All that fashion IQ, and this is the result? Meh.

Don’t believe one optimistic word from any public figure about the economy or humanity in general. They are all part of the problem. Its like a game of Monopoly. In America, the richest 1% now hold 1/2 OF ALL UNITED STATES WEALTH. Unlike 'lesser' estimates, this includes all stocks, bonds, cash, and material assets held by America's richest 1%. Even that filthy pig Oprah acknowledged that it was at about 50% in 2006. Naturally, she put her own 'humanitarian' spin on it. Calling attention to her own 'good will'. WHAT A DISGUSTING HYPOCRITE SLOB. THE RICHEST 1% HAVE LITERALLY MADE WORLD PROSPERITY ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE. Money does not grow on trees. When too much wealth accumulates at the top, the middle class slip further into debt and the lower class further into poverty. A similar rule applies worldwide. The world's richest 1% now own over 40% of ALL WORLD WEALTH. This is EVEN AFTER you account for all of this ‘good will’ ‘humanitarian’ BS from celebrities and executives. ITS A SHAM.

Mike: Either she is or she is not. You must be really fickle. Jennifer is beautiful. I just would like to see her make better fashion choices.

I think she's pretty! I like her!

Now I will address the attempts to make a competition between Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce. In addition to being "beautiful" -Jennifer Hudson is a wonderful singer. And while you may choose to "prefer" her to Beyonce in the "Dreamgirls" remember that Beyonce who is undeniably BEAUTIFUL..also had some vocal "moments" As a professional singer- I have never been very impressed w/ her... but I have to say- When she performed "Listen" I changed my mind. The girl can sing! I think it's a shame that she has been given junk to record that didn't show off what she is cabable of until now. She & Jennifer did a wonderful job of sharing the screen..& they're BOTH doing a wonderful job in presenting positive images for todays youth. Beyonce is on Sports Ill. and Jennifer is on Vogue's cover- give them BOTH their props. No One is "upstaging" the other! Stop being so petty & look for the good in people. Or YOU may end up being judged by others w/the same harsh scale you use for these girls!

oneofakind864 Mon, Feb 26, 2007 at 02:06 PM EST

My weight has been 112 to 200lbs & back at 5:4- so I AM qualified to speak for the thin & thick. First- Why does everyone have to look so hard to find all the NEGATIVE comments to say?? Jennifer Hudson is BEAUTIFUL...PERIOD. She looks great on the cover of Vogue and it is NOT an unflattering shot. She looks natural, vibrant, and full of life. She's not staged, as we've been used to seeing in Vogue. Frankly- I have never understood why some size 0-6 foot tall "skeleton",posing so she looks ticked off at the world- is supposed to be my "ideal" On the other hand, while I find it wonderful that big girls like "Monique" are thought to be beautiful..I personally think that "HEALTH" shouldbe the measure of "beauty" If your Dr says you're healthy and you like yourself then RAVE ON no matter your weight. And if you're small- don't delude yourself that everyone envies you- I've been on both sides...TRUST ME...there are people who find ALL sizes attractive! "Beauty" should be more than skin deep.

matt Mon, Feb 26, 2007 at 01:59 PM EST

ok to be brutally honest, shes not pretty in any way. ask any straight guy and you would get the same response.
and thats not because shes fat( even though she is.) its just because shes not that pretty.
and dont compare her to beyonce, jh is way below her league

jenn Mon, Feb 26, 2007 at 02:46 AM EST

you know what's wrong with society? people have gotten to such obscene weights that it has become socially and physically accepted to be that size. the least people can do is truly try and lose weight. there's not one overweight person out there who truly didn't wish to lose some weight. stop giving yourselves crutches and take some action. stop staying it's great when fat people fave adversity and rise above. it should BE THE SAME with thin people also.

SkylaBlue Sat, Feb 17, 2007 at 12:10 AM EST

In reference to Jennifer Hudson, why does it has to be anything negative? Can we are just be proud of her for what and who she is. I am very happy that Vogue has chose her for the cover because she is an amazing young lady; It hurts me with your negative comments about her being a Full Figure; I am Full Figure and I wear a size 20 and damn proud. The difference is, Black women don't go around starving themselves to be a size 0 or size 2. My questions to you Ms. Michelle, when was the last time you were on a Vogue cover? Jennifer probably has accomplished more in 1 year than you will ever accomplish in your entire lifetime. Stop with all the negative comments, let the young lady enjoy her life and be the person she wants to be, stop comparing Beyonce with Jennifer; there accomplishments are so different.

wildecat Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

In the link provided, it says that JHud is only the third African American woman SINCE 2002. I think Michelle must have missed that. Don't know if it's true or not - just what the linked site says.

stephen Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 10:07 AM EST

Well, Fatima, I'll support her with you. I hate how some celebs are hated so much when in fact they are really talented. I think Beyonce has a lot to offer, and is a better role model than some other females. I get sick seeing Paris' "book" on the shelves, not to mention being a best-seller! Anyway, I love J. Hud and any other celeb w/ talent. I believe movie and music making is an art, and its reputation is being tarnished by groups like the Pussycat Dolls (although they are nice to look at).

Jennifer Hudson has been taking fab photos, but this is not one of them. She looks like she has aged ten years. Very unflattering.

Steve Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 12:44 AM EST

Jatarheel - Thank you so much for setting the record straight about Jennifer Hudson NOT being just the third African American woman to appear on the cover of American Vogue!! I've been reading this little piece of misinformation all over the place and it's been driving me CRAZY!! You would think these reporters would do a little fact checking before reposting such claims. Granted, Vogue isn't exactly famous for it's history of cover model diversity but, even so, the idea that only two other African American women preceded J. Hud in Vogue's entire history should have seemed questionable enough to do a quick Google search...

Fatima Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 10:42 PM EST

Stephen - haha I just can't hide the obsession. I feel like B's unofficial PR person on these boards. Some one has got to defend her!

It looks photoshopped - remember the pics of Katie Couric for CBS News?

Jatarheel Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 05:35 PM EST

Love Hudson and actually like this cover a lot. One interesting thing is that Oprah had to crash diet for her cover per Wintour's reqs, but JH looks happy and certainly didn't make any drastic changes. That might be a sign of progress. But, for the record, there have actually been more than a dozen American Vogue covers with AA women featured solo on the cover. JH is just the third African American ACTRESS to get the honor after Halle and Oprah. Hudson wasn't even the third AA non-model, since Marion Jones, an Olympian athlete, graced the cover in 2001 in addition to O and Halle. Agreed, the Vogue record should be more inclusive as many posters have indicated, but this article and all the others like it spread misinformation and don't allow us to celebrate all the great AA beauties that have won this recognition - Beverly Johnson, Naomi Campbell, Shari Belafonte just to name a few. Here again is a great collection of covers:

stephen Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 05:01 PM EST

Jennifer, I appreciater your insight. You're very intelligent. However, I can't bad-mouth "King of Queens," it's sooo funny. But as for the other two, "Still Standing," RIP, "According To Jim," be a pal and leave..

jhud fan Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

People I do admit that the pictures are a bit lacking given that it does have a famous stylist and Annie Liebovitz. I kinda expected more. However, it does look good and I'm proed of Jennifer, I only wish they had put more to it. feels like a mmovie loaded with oscar winners that only delivers an meh! so I guess I am in agreement with M. Kung. It's not that she looks bad. just that she doesn't look as good as she should.

Jatarheel Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 04:53 PM EST

So I thought maybe JH was the third African American woman on the cover of American Vogue August 1974, but then I remembered Beverly Johnson, Halle Berry, and Oprah have all graced the cover so that's also wrong. So finally, I found Eonline and they clarified - JH is the third African American ACTRESS to get the cover. That's a very different claim, and one that seriously needs to be rectified.

Jatarheel Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 04:38 PM EST

Michelle Kung wrote "-- on the power issue no less" as an added description, implying that Hudson was the third African American woman overall to appear on the Vogue cover, AND it was even more of an honor because it was the power issue. So, either those covers are from other editions of Vogue - foreign for example - or the post is at best misleading and at worst just plain wrong. I hope they update it and clarify to give a bit more information. Here's another story on this from the San Francisco Chronicle. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=7&entry_id=13470

Rose Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 04:28 PM EST

I think she looks great...what's the problem?

Juan Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 04:22 PM EST

I am normally astounded by recent photo shoots of J Hud. They have been ammazing. However, that ocver is not up to the standards of Vogue AND Leibowitz. It's quite odd. And while I'm on the subject, there's something odd about the SI spread as well. The shots look out of place w/ the tradition of the issue.

Jennifer Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 04:06 PM EST

Let me clarify that I don't personally think overweight men are attractive, either, but there does seem to be a double-standard in society or at least in pop culture. Look at the television shows, "Still Standing", "According to Jim", and "King of Queens". All feature overweight men married to thin, attractive women. You wouldn't see a television show with an overweight woman married to a hot young stud! (or at least I can't think of one)That is a double standard and I think it is silly. All they are trying to do is pacify male fantasies that if men are overweight they can still land a hot babe, but how realistic is it?

Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 03:52 PM EST

sally is a moron

djm Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 03:50 PM EST

I think the cover is great and the JHud looks fantastic. Congrats to her (I can't believe she is only the 3rd African-American - that is SHOCKING) and thank you Vogue for celebrating a REAL woman on the cover.

Stephen again Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 03:35 PM EST

I think Anna Wintour gave in to the pressure by putting her on the cover. I dont think she's happy about it, but is probably trying to distance herself from Meryl Streep in "Prada" as far as possible

anonymous Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 03:34 PM EST

Well, Jennifer, I must disagree about your belief that overweight men are attractive. I know many who suffer from eating disorders more common with women (anorexia, bulemia), and are terrified of gaining weight. I can't recall an overweight "Sexiest Man Alive." I love Jennifer Hudson, and any other person like her. She's full figured (NOT FAT!!!) and has a right to preach about health. I hate celebrities talking about health when in fact their practices are very different. I will not name names, but things need to change, with women and men alike.

Stephen Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 03:33 PM EST

Travisb, drop dead of obesity....Fatima, nice to hear from you again (you Beyonce lover you)

anonymous Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

Jennifer Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 03:06 PM EST

You go, Big Mama!!! I'm so tired of people thinking that if a woman is not pencil thin, then she is "FAT". There is a big difference. And I hate the double-standard that society has about overweight men. An overweight man can be considered attractive, but an even slightly overweight woman shouldn't even be allowed to leave the house she is so hideous! I hate that attitude and I think it is stupid and ridiculous!

Jen Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

Is it just me, or does it not even look like her body? I LIKE that she's not a stick figure, but in this picture, she looks a lot thinner than she did in an interview a few days ago. They did same major air brushing... that pisses me off. She should be portrayed the way she is, because that's what I like about her.

Big Mama Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 02:52 PM EST

People, please. Let me set the record straight: I'm a size 28! I am fat! Jennifer Hudson is NOT fat. She is actually of average size for a woman in the US. She's probably a size 14, 16 at the most. She is GORGEOUS! The cover does not do her justice though I'm proud as heck of her for being on it. The expression looks to me like she was making a "You go girl" kind of comment. Comparing her to Beyonce' is like apples and organges. They each have their own talent and use it well.
You go Jennifer! For the record: I may be large but I am CERTAINLY in charge...and a tigress where it counts the most! Just ask my husband!

jb Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

Oliver, I second your comment. Travisb, you are a pig and an idiot. Jennifer looks radiant. I love her, and can't wait for her to win the Oscar! She is a great American success story, and I love how she is sticking it to Simon Cowell and proving his arrogant a%& wrong! She is the first plus-sized woman to ever grace Vogue? That is an atrocity. I shouldn't be surprised, though. Anna Wintour is an idiot!

Fatima Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 02:06 PM EST

I am so tired of this JHud Beyonce rivalry the media has made up. IN the long run, Beyonce is a far more talented artist.

oliver Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 02:00 PM EST

travisb: You're a pig and an idiot. Jennifer Hudson isn't fat.

Jakeem Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:54 PM EST

The SI Swimsuit issue may be for men, but it certainly has propelled numerous women into superstardom in the fashion industry. I'm sure you'll remember who they all are: Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, Kathy Ireland, Paulina Porizkova, Elle Macpherson, Rachel Hunter, Heidi Klum, Carol Alt and Tyra Banks, to name a few.
Now THAT's a power issue!

travisb Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

i think the shot is meant to be youthfull, sassy, vibrant, happy....all of the things we don't think of when we see fat people. I think they are trying to change our perception of how fat people feel, and how miserable they are. i guess they did a pretty good job. She does look really happy...but still fat.

aramisx Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:35 PM EST

ANNA WINTOUR ACTUALLY PUT SOMEONE WHO ISN'T A SIZE 0-2 ON THE COVER?!
*five minutes later from passing out*
Well, they couldn't have picked a better person. J-Hud is the shizne! I hope she gets an Oscar. It would almost seem like a slap with a spiked Manolo at this point if she were to lose.

Casey Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:24 PM EST

People are so bitchy, and our idea of beauty has been warped beyond recognition. Would you be more satisfied with an anorexic model looking like she's doped up on heroin rather than a confident, happy Jennifer Hudson? I think the cover is stunning.

soxgirl Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:16 PM EST

I think the cover is gorgeous. It looks powerful as it should. Beyonce looks like eye-candy and Jhud has the world on a string. Beyonce should not have timed this the way she did, she ended up looking like a loser in comparison and very very jealous. She must have been preoccupied with upstaging the Oscars, in the end she comes off sad and vain.

sarah Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:08 PM EST

Am I the only one in the world who thinks Dreamgirls really isn't that great of a movie (aka it was kinda boring and overly long)? I gaurantee I'll have forgotten it by next year when some other not-really-deserving actress is getting the best supporting Oscar.

The Departed on the other hand...I got the special edition DVD and look forward to watching it over and over for years to come.

Ebi Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

The SI Swimsuit issue is for MEN. Spring Vogue is for WOMEN and the FASHION INDUSTRY. To compare them is silly. Whichever one sells more, the implications of the Vogue cover are staggering.

Wait until Jennifer gets the Oscar--you ain't seen nothing yet

LisaMama Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

She's beautiful, but the shot is strange with her mouth hanging open. She does look happy, though!
BTW, she's a size 10! That's not "plus sized"!

K Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

Hud's expression could have been a bit more subdued but that's not really the kind of person she is. Also, the angle was clearly used to make her as slim as possible; this is still Vogue, after all. Lovely dress, though, and the picture of her at the piano in the spread is quite classy.

Sally Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

Can we stop the Beyonce vs. Jen-Hud discussion NOW! it's old.

GoddessLu Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

OK GeeMoney, I'll give you that Beyonce is more famous and JHud is just a youngster in this but Britney is better than Christina simply because she came out first? No no no. (BTW, both were Mouseketeers together, with JT and JC Chavez, fellow N'Sync-er in the early 90's). Let Beyonce stand on her own merit--time will tell who's the better songstress. We KNOW who's the better actress...

GeeMoney Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:36 PM EST

J.Hud. will never upstage Beyonce. No matter what, do to the fact that Beyonce is better looking and way more famous, not to mention a lot thinner. I think Jennifer is great, he figure is great, her voice is great, etc, but it's kind of like Britney and Christina.... Christina is a better singer, but Britney came out first. So did Beyonce.

Alex Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

Correction, she said power issue. I am sure Michelle is more than aware of the many black woman who have graced the cover solo in the past.

alexis Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:25 PM EST

Correction - there have been tons of Black females on the cover of vogue:

http://claycane.blogspot.com/2007/02/hudson-on-vogue.html

Jakeem Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

Beyonce' upstaged by Jennifer H. just because she's on the cover of Vogue. Uh, I don't think so.
Would you like to compare the sales of ANY edition of Vogue vs. the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit swimsuit issue?

sounding Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:12 PM EST

No. The original poster is wrong.
This is a Fabulous cover - she looks glamourous. It's not back-handed at all - it's Fashion. What are you talking about??
Reminds me of the glammed-up shots Oprah does.
This is a very flattering angle for a larger woman.

NineDaves Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

she's the third? who were the other two?

Adri Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:04 PM EST

I have to agree that she looks awkward. Her eyes and her "happy mouth" just doesn't match - it looks forced and uncomfortable. But then, I would say that she lokks better than when she was on American Idol. So my verdict : everyone could have done a better job.

Michelle Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:01 PM EST

This picture really seems to capture the essence of her beautiful personality.

Jael Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

This picture makes her body look stumpy and hides her neck. I still think she's lovely, but they did not do this well.

Louise Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

I think she looks fabulous.

Ed Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 11:54 AM EST

AMAZING!

J. Hud doesn't look sloppy at all - better than Bouncy!

covertanjou Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

I think Hudson looks amazing. The picture illustrates her dynamic personality. Unlike many other Vogue cover shots (bland, serious-looking, ultra-skinny models-actresses ), this one jumps out at you. If you compare this with the covers of Nicole Kidman et al, you see Vogue highlights Hudson's plus-size everything (beauty, personality, body) in a VERY flattering light. Also glad she looks a lot better than Beyonce in SI.

AuntieEm Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 11:33 AM EST

I also think that Jennifer looks great. The dress is very flattering and classic and she looks sexy and confident.

Rev. O.J. Flow Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 11:31 AM EST

She looks happy, confident and having fun. I think you're reading way too much into this.

Sally Thu, Feb 15, 2007 at 11:27 AM EST

I don't have a problem with the picture. But isn't there a collaboration with the cover girl? Don't cover girls also give the OK for the cover? There's a similar picture of Whitney Houston http://i11.ebayimg.com/03/i/06/21/ba/ag_1_b.JPG
Maybe they were trying to get that same cover shot.
I think the dress is gorgeous, she has such good style taste, maybe because she went to modelling school.
