There's X-cellent symbolism in 'The Departed'

If you've already seen The Departed, then you absolutely must click here and check out a fascinating piece by the Miami Herald's Rene Rodriguez. "As an homage to Howard Hawks' classic 1932 Scarface, [director Martin] Scorsese scattered Xs throughout the movie (some more subtle than others), using them as a symbol of impending doom," Rodriguez writes, before compiling a nifty set of screen grabs to prove said point. Scarily obsessive -- yet utterly cool.

As far as symbols are concerned, I couldn't help but to notice the picture drawn that seems to be from the secret of nimh when he was talking about rats. this movie seems to be riddled with symbols and I'm very enthusiastic about trying to unravle them.

That was so cool! What a great find. I, too, cannot wait for the DVD and to see Scorsese finally get his long-deserved Oscar.

This is so awesome. I'm seeing it for the seventh and final time in the theater tonight. That will set a personal record for me. Man, I love the audience's intake of breath at the moments I shall not spoil.

This is a great find and more proof of Scorsese's genius. I can't WAIT for this DVD.
