Um... how are they going to make a sequel to 'The Departed'?

Categories: Deals, Oscars 2007

Hey check this out, cops and robbers fans—some wicked exciting news coming from the world of blood-soaked Best Picture nominees: The Los Angeles Times quotes sources today, saying that a sequel to my favorite film of 2006, The Departed, is in the works. Yay!

But, you say, doesn't Martin Scorsese's Best Picture Oscar nominee end with pretty much every major character having his head blown off or splattered on Leo's shoes or something else grossly gruesome? How, pray tell, can they keep the crime saga going? Good question. Especially since, the Times reports, screenwriter William Monahan won't be going the same route that the folks back in Hong Kong did, when they followed Infernal Affairs (the movie on which The Departed is based) with a prequel and another semi-prequel.

So what would you do? Where would you take this deep, dark story of coppers and crooks next? And which character or actor would you most like to see return? I say, if they do anything more with the marvelously spastic and sweaty Alec "Patriot Act!" Baldwin, I'll be there.

My guess is that they are going to do a Godfather thing and have the sequel as a prequel, how Damon's charcater became a part of the Irish mafia or how DiCaprio's character developed, etc. Or they can focus on Marky, and yeah I forgot, Sheen's character fell of a buliding.

Spoiler Alert fucko!

Ummmmmmmm... Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 03:32 PM EST

You know, I'm not as enamored with The Departed as everyone else seems to be, but I still enjoyed it. And speaking of spoilers, I knew pretty much everything that was going to happen because I'd also seen (more than a few times, mind you) a little movie called INFERNAL AFFAIRS.

As the guy who mentioned the lack of a Spoiler Alert in the first place, my main complaint is that major spoilers were posted on the main Popwatch page, in a very short article. I couldn't avoid it. It's one thing to post an alert and ruin the end of a movie after clicking "Continue Reading" (just like PopWatch does for seemingly Every Other Article now--why not this one??). In an age where DVD rules and the biggest night in cinema is still weeks away, it's inexcuseable.

Yes, a good movie is a good movie: I'll be seeing "The Departed" soon, just as I planned. The movie isn't "ruined"--but my ability to appreciate the surprise and gravity of such an ending has been.

Besides, word on the street is that Mark Wahlberg's character is jarringly and painfully erased in the first five minutes of the sequel. Oh--whoops. Spoiler Alert. Well jeez, there--why were you reading comments about the sequel if you didn't want to know info about the sequel?? Whiner.

Call me crazy....but youre supposed to have seen it by the time the Oscars come around...OK- fine: You have three weeks to watch any and all movies that may win an Academy Award. After that, we all have perfect liberty to talk and write all we want about any of those movies. Maybe you shold turn off your Internet until you find time to catch up...

fredric Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 01:32 PM EST

LOL at Ummmmm! Makes total sense to me. A good movie is a good movie - even if you know the ending - I certainly wouldn't walk into Bobby expecting to be surprised by an assassination.

Ummmmm... Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 01:27 PM EST

Why would you read a story about a movie's SEQUEL if you didn't anticipate plot points being brought up? I think one's interest about what happens in the next movie trumps the revelations of any "spoilers" for the original movie. Call me crazy!

Ep Sato Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

Jasmine, I totally agree. Who would have thought that Marky Mark would make such lasting contributions to popular culture? Between Entourage (he produces it), and his roles in Invincible and the Departed, the man had a fantastic 2006. He also keeps giving me reasons to put my foot in my mouth for having ever doubted his acting ability after Planet of the Apes.

Jasmine Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 12:18 PM EST

Mark Wahlberg's character is ripe for a movie of it's own. I'd definately go see it. Obviously people love his performance and his character, as evident by him being the only Departed acting nominee.

colin Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

back to the point. a sequel would be dumb. even more so if scorsese doesn't do it. a prequel would make sense though, maybe about jack nicholson's character

Some people actually wait until films come out on DVD to watch them and trust that the media isn't going to blab about details at least until the film's been out for a year or so. Thanks EW! Losers.

mike Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 11:38 AM EST

Ep Satos right. Do not let this keep you from seeing the Departed. For me, it was the best movie of the year. It's a Martin Scorsese movie. Don't you remember at the end of the Aviator, when Howard Hughes went on the killing rampage? No sequel there. Spoiler Alert!!

Ep Sato Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

Yeah, the spoiler thing was less than cool. On the other hand, the ending doesn't ruin the movie, because it is truly Scorcese at his best since my personal favorite of his "Goodfellas".
For those who haven't seen it, it turns out that Henry Hill is an FBI stool pigeon....see, now you guys have got me doing it!

Derek Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 09:25 AM EST

I'm certainly not one of those guys who gets pissed about minor spoilers, but I just glanced through and saw the ending written right there for everyone to see.

This movie is still in theatres! We don't mind you discussing the ending, just give a little warning to the rest of us. It's common courtesy.

Baxter Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 08:30 AM EST

I heard they were re-releasing The Departed for the Oscar season, but I'm guessing that will be limited. Everyone should see it, even if the ending was spoiled.

Gretchen Weiners Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 08:22 AM EST

Wow haven't seen it yet. Thanks so much for letting me know everyone dies. You all have been slacking with spoilers stuff lately - HOW 'BOUT SOME WARNINGS!

ericalina Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 07:32 AM EST

Sorry I "sickened" you - and yes, you should get over it.

t3hdow Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 01:10 AM EST

Jeanne, I'd actually buy that argument if it weren't for two things:
1) articles containing recent movies almost never have any spoilers from editors and ew bloggers alike, unless a fair warning's been posted and
2) if the entire article weren't shown for all of Popwatch to see.
I had no intention of clicking this thread. I just happened to browse by and even then, I spotted a major spoiler. If he at least cut out the spoiler and placed it on the 'click-only' portion of the article (which some EW editors have done in the past), then it would be 100% my fault. But it's not, so I have a right to complain. Yes, I might care too much about this, but it's happened far too often for me to count.

Despite not seeing the film yet, from what I heard (sans spoilers), it sounded like the movie was self-contained. A sequel would be a bad idea.

Popcorn Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 12:46 AM EST

All this concern about The Departed #2 is well and good.

But why aren't we all talking about Saw IV?

Jeanne Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 12:19 AM EST

Okay seriously, you all saw the headline and knew it was an entry about The Departed. A movie that has been out for several months. Did you really think there wouldn't be spoilers in it? Sheesh.
Now how about we quit picking on the guy for not giving a spoiler warning and get back to the point: that it's a horrible idea to do a sequel to this movie. Because everyone but Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, and Vera Farmiga is dead at the end.

David Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 12:12 AM EST

UNACCEPTABLE. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SPOILER ALERT ATTACHED TO THIS ARTICLE. THE DEPARTED IS STILL IN MANY THEATERS AND IS SURE TO BE IN EVEN MORE AFTER THE OSCAR BROADCAST. IT'S CARELESS TO ASSUME YOU CAN NONCHALANTLY REFER TO MAJOR PLOT POINTS OF A CURRENT MOVIE MANY HAVE YET TO SEE. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING.

t3hdow Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 12:04 AM EST

Whoops, I meant to say 'Sarah' with the Cinderella comment, not 'Chris'. Guess I do need to chill a little. It still doesn't make my complain any less valid.

t3hdow Wed, Jan 31, 2007 at 12:03 AM EST

Ericalina...that's the dumbest thing I ever heard. Why should I get over the fact that I'd rather not have movies spoiled because I don't run to the theaters every weekend to catch the latest films? So you're also saying anyone who doesn't view Lost or 24 in its initial viewings aren't true fans and they should 'get over it' when nearly unavoidable spoilers pop up all over the place? Ugh, your idiotic logic sickens me.

For all the support EW shows towards TiVo and DVD-only TV series viewing, you think they'd respect patient viewers by not spoiling anything without a warning. Yet time and time again, EW keeps slipping spoilers when I try my hardest to avoid them. So yes, I have a reason to be upset if it's not hidden and blatantly open for the whole world to see without a warning. It's inconsiderate and ruins the experience for them. But OHHHH I should get over it!!! What the hell...

And to chris, I saw that commerical. That's just patheric. Disney's getting desperate.

sarah Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 11:05 PM EST

Can you say...TERRIBLE IDEA.
This makes about as much sense as Cinderella 3.

ericalina Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 11:00 PM EST

oh jeez, people, if you cared that much about the movie you would have seen it on the big screen by now, since it's been out since october. SPOILER ALERT! There's tons of twists and everyone kills each other, get over it!

Jasper Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 10:25 PM EST

What the.......? What's it gonna be, a romantic comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Vera Farmiga and Alec Baldwin as one of their father? Who's left?

t3hdow Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 10:21 PM EST

OMFG Joshua...I'm not one to insult EW editors, but did you not think for a second that mentioning most of the main characters dying was a spoiler? And it's not like you encased part of your comment with a spoiler alert. I hadn't even seen the film yet. Come on man...

Chris Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 09:59 PM EST

SPOLIER ALERT:

I'm pretty sure than Martin Sheen's character died too. He kind of fell off a building.

Ellipsian Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 09:29 PM EST

Ummm...Joshua? How about a big ole SPOILER ALERT! next time? Please.

Stephanie Tue, Jan 30, 2007 at 09:10 PM EST

Yeah, mostly every single character except for Martin and Marky had their heads blown off. So what is going to happen? Are they going to do a story with Sheen's character like they did with Tommy Lee Jones in US Marshalls?
