Aggggghhhhhhh! Fox cancels 'The O.C.'!

Jan 3, 2007, 06:18 PM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: Television

17582__taylor_l Taylor Townsend (pictured) is here to blood-curdlingly let you know that Fox has officially canceled The O.C. Its last episode -- the 16th of Season 4 -- will air February 22.

Ah, O.C. My love, my life, my adorable but at times disobedient pet. I'm conflicted. Yes, Season 4 has been great -- the humor's back, Ryan and Taylor are doin' it, Seth and Summer are for some reason engaged. But let's face it: it had to end eventually, and we fans pretty much knew this was coming. Did we really want to see a senile Julie Cooper terrorize the other patients in her nursing home, which she had to live in because her 17th husband, Rich Oldman, whom she poisoned for real this time, left her only Riverside-rich? (Actually, yes.) I don't know -- I'm torn between devastation and a philosophical attitude of genuine appreciation that it ever existed at all. I like Josh Schwartz's comment in Fox's press release: "For a certain audience, at a certain time, The O.C. has meant something. For that we are grateful."

And so are we. Let's all wear our "Save Marissa" shirts, leather wristcuffs, and hoodies tomorrow in mourning. (I only own a hoodie, but whatever.) Let the wailing and gnashing of teeth begin...

UPDATE: This just in from the Schwartzinator himself, via e-mail: "Yeah, this season will indeed be the last. There was some speculation about a Season 5 on another network but we are having a really fun, great run and I feel like better to go out now then stay too long at the party... and after 4 seasons of the OC, I know a lot about parties..."

Drunken pool parties featuring occasional hookers? Ah, yes, I remember them well...

Matt Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

The O.C. was just "THE" show for me... It was and still is, (and It's september 2008 !) the only show that I really really really wanted to see ! Other shows can be "nice" or "funny" or "beautifull" but The O.C. was just "special" for me in a very beautifull way. I really wanted to see the next episode EVERY TIME the episode that was on ended ! It was just the show that "touched" you.

September 2008 now and The O.C. is still my favourite, special, beautifull show...

I really hope that they start the show again, but I don't think that is ever going to happen :'(

Nice work, FOX ! :@

FOX what are you DOING!!!!!!!!!!!!! The OC was a great show covering all aspects for kids all over the world today. Season 4 was rubbish thats why the rattings dropped and also coz you killed of 1 good caracter. There should be a season 5 where the las season was all a dream and that Ryan wakes up and realises Marissa is in a coma and eventually comes out off it. Dalla bought someone back from the dead "Ewin" and that was after a few seasons so why carnt you and let them be together where they head off to college as that was all skipped rubbish & rushed season to 4. Let us have the ending we all want.

Matt Sun, Oct 28, 2007 at 02:51 AM EST

I am a huge fan of the O.C and i must say...what was FOX thinking?!!! there is hardly any good shows anymore..i really didn't like season 4 at all, they should have approached it in a darker way like they did in the first 3 seasons...get some of the characters to have heavy drug addictions, fighting, stealing, and just all out make a mess of there lives, not live a perfect life. they made the characters act hella old....but maybe thats why it failed..didn't really appeal to the teenage audience, but i really think they should make a comeback...and for the record, i didn't like the taylor chick...annoyed me!!!

i just watch the o.c for chris brown

Paula Sat, Jul 7, 2007 at 12:12 PM EST

Is there any way we could save the OC? Won't they change their minds even after they read our pathetic comments begging for The O.C. to return? This is just really, really, really sad. If there's anything we could do to make them reconsider, we'd do it, wouldn't we?

dead-otsos Wed, Jun 20, 2007 at 06:37 AM EST

The O.C. is the best TV serial I've ever seen.
Having just watched the last episode I understand that this is the end not only for me, but for the whole world.
My internet speed is very low. That is why i have to sit for 5 or 6 ours to download one episode. But I have nothing to do now..I'm finding it increasingly difficult to live without my favourite serial. Please, make the 5th season... don't let me know that my life is over...

Mary Wed, Jun 20, 2007 at 06:19 AM EST

Crystal Sat, Feb 10, 2007 at 01:01 AM EST

TO: nathan Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 06:10 AM EST:OMG to Crystal :O I think ill start a petition to have you sent over to Iraq so you can do something meaningful with your life!
You're a horrible human being and how dare you say such a horrible disgusting thing when those men and women are there fighting for us. You are a miserable person.
As for my comment, I have funraised over a million dollars for many different organizations and I fight for and advocate for many of them as well as doing things like petitions. For once maybe I just wanted to do something for me and my fellow OC lovers. Not that its really any of your buisness. I think that you as a human being should not be able to associate with the general public because you are absolutely not understanding how to approch, communicate or treat them. If you had an issue with my comment you should've been a little more respectful. Now not only I but everyone sees you for the moron that you are. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY TO THAT NATHAN

Lois Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 05:52 PM EST

BY THE WAY NOT TO MENTION BUT THE FOURTH SEASON OF THE OC,WASN'T ISN'T A FULL LENGTH SEASON.LIKE REALLY THO,YOU AT LEAST COULD OF DID A FULL LENGTH SEASON,SEEMING AS IT IS BEING CANCELED,OMG YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MAD I AM.AND EVERYONE HATES FOXXXXXXXX

Lois Fri, Feb 2, 2007 at 05:47 PM EST

OMG,How can you think about canceling the OC.SCREW FOX,I hate Fox so much now.I don't understand this, why couldn't Fox just let The Oc come on Cw,it doesn't make any since.Well I knows one thing,After the last episode of the oc,i will never be watching any more shows on Fox anymore, and you know something i dought it would not only be me not watching fox anymore,i say there are thousands of people who won't watch you guys anymore. So you guys just lost out.The Oc was one of your best shows on Fox,and now your taking it away from us.How can you be so cruel. If you really cared about the fans then you would let cw take over the oc.There are thousands and thousands of comments on websites that says to not cancel the Oc,not to mention there was over 12,000 votes on a poll to save the oc,and over 500,000 names on a petition. So please just let us have our show back, even if it's only for one more season, just please do it,because you will lose alot of fans if you don't.Please Reply.

Tiffany-Ann Mon, Jan 22, 2007 at 06:45 AM EST

So the fact of the oc being canceled is by far the worst news that I had heard in a very long time I have been dedicated to this show since the begining and Im not going to give up now. The only reason the ratings are droping is because of Greys Anatomy on ABC plays at the same time if ppl would just watch the oc and catch the re run of greys on fridays the world would be a better place or if fox would have switched nights knowing that it was going to be up against such a high rated show I mean come on ppl if you want a show to last you dont leave it to fight for its life against one of americas most watched shows. I used to watch Greys until it went to thursdays and now that my favorite show is ending because of it I am boycotting Greys, I will not give up on the best show ever long live the oc.

Stephanie Sun, Jan 21, 2007 at 03:46 PM EST

I really don't think they should cancel The O.C. I love that show! I have every season! They say 4 million viewers is not enought! well those 4 million viewers are going to lose their favorite show!

Thomas Fri, Jan 19, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

why? does the OC not have enough fans or something cause i live my life around that show i own every season im pretty much obsessed they need to give us at least a full last season...

Jessica Thu, Jan 18, 2007 at 02:51 PM EST

I LOVE THE OC SO MUCH AND I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THIS BLOG~I THINK IT FINALLY DOES THE OC CANCELATION JUSTICE~FOR EVERYONE ELSE ITS JUST A SHOW THAT IS BEING CANCELED FOR ME AND ITS A LIFESTYLE THAT I AM BEING FORCED TO LEAVE BEHIND....UN WILLINGLY

Shiznitzz Wed, Jan 17, 2007 at 10:00 PM EST

o.c was a great show and it still is. i thought it may end but if fox could get anouther 8 more episodes makin the total of season 4 24 eps and in total getting the o.c to have 100 episodes would be at least a good final hurrah for all o.c fans

mandy Fri, Jan 12, 2007 at 02:10 AM EST

I love the o.c, i cant believe they are canceling the best show ever! I watch it on the internet every week.

Shane Greenwood Tue, Jan 9, 2007 at 06:49 PM EST

Its a shame the oc is ending but all good things do come to an end and it would be awful if it kept going and became boring, but saying that the show has really picked up this season and deservesto be shown in its entirety even if it is the last, and will people stop comparing it to one tree hill n dawsons creek them shows r totally gay

Shelagh Sat, Jan 6, 2007 at 08:55 PM EST

The problem with that is that Josh Schwartz is already developing 2 other new shows, and there are many cast members who have moved on to movies. Although I wish the show could continue, now that it's been announced that it's been cancelled, I'm sure that the actors will move on. It's not like the Family Guy - those actors can do other projects because it's just voices. Live action television shows require a lot of time commitment and I wouldn't blame the cast members for moving on already.

Help Save the OC Sat, Jan 6, 2007 at 07:35 PM EST

Ya never know if this will really be the last season. If fans unite it is possible they will make another season. 3 million viewers is no small number. We just need the closet fans to come out and help get this show to continue.

Kayla Sat, Jan 6, 2007 at 04:30 PM EST

I think the show was amazing and do admit that since the leaving of Misha Barton the show has fallen down its gotten some cheese added and i still love it! Im holding in for the seth and summer story and now for ryan and taylor! I hate to see it go it make me so upset...i wish that they would develop the two love stories of our favorite 4..they did great getting back on there feet and i think they should push foward. If they leave ill be really upset but ill also understand why seeing that the other stories havent been able to fully develope!
AHHHH.
Rip..to the O.C

gina Sat, Jan 6, 2007 at 12:32 PM EST

Great, get rid of one more show with actual writers and actors and plots...please don't replace it with another REALITY SHOW!

Donna Ketterer Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 10:15 PM EST

I think when Fox put The OC on Thursday night, in that slot, they knew exactly what was going to happen.
It was over when they moved it to Thursday, opposite Gray's Anatomy!

Shelagh Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 09:26 PM EST

I think the thing that bothers me most about the cancellation is that it seemed that FOX decided The O.C.'s fate before the season even began because they only ordered 16 episodes for this season. So I think that's maybe why people are saying that FOX didn't give it a chance. And what was the point of FOX putting it on that one Wednesday in November? They hardly promoted it, so how did they expect it to do well? When ABC moved Grey's to Thursday, everybody knew. Not the same with OC. FOX needs some help with their marketing (and their schedule planning)! I only started watching The O.C. this season (unlike most other fans, obviously!) and I have to say that this season is really entertaining, and since watching seasons 1, 2 & 3 on DVD, I think that they needed to kill Marissa to change the tone of the show back to the humour from season 1. I think that the writers have done well this season trying to get the humour back into it.

fjp Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 08:30 PM EST

IT WAS OUR LIFE ON THURSDAY NIGHT. WHO'S GOING TO TAKE CARE OF RYAN? CAN WE MAKE SENSE OF IT? AND SPEAKING OF SENSE, WOULDN'T IT MAKE SENSE FOR THE O.C. TO CONTINUE ON FX?

valerie Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 08:08 PM EST

i think that the people who don't agree with fox's decision to cancel the oc should boycott all their shows
like 24 (hate that show)
and so angry with those fox people! the didn't give the show a chance!
going agains grey's anatomy (who's like a more grown up show than the oc )
and they got oprah on their side!
they should've change the schedule.

Jeff Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 07:55 PM EST

I just feel like Fox never gave the OC a chance this year. How was the show supposed to regain ratings vs Grey's and CSI? Obviously they weren't going to. If the OC was given the plum time slot directly behind American Idol I gaurantee it would average 10 million viewers a night. Put it on after the Idol results show on Wendesdays. Fox is full of a bunch of morons. Fox could have given it a shot after Idol and then if the ratings did not pick up cancel it and have it end in April instead of February.

t3hdow Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 06:05 PM EST

If it were any other series being cancelled, I doubt there would be much negativity against non fans. When many other scripted series got axed this year - regardless on how good or bad they were - many people voiced their opinion, whether they supported the show or not. Why the bias here against non OC fans? We deserve a valid opinion of the show, even if we didn't 'get it' like most of you here. As long as you avoid stereotyping or insulting the fans, I don't see the problem.

Raegan Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 05:06 PM EST

If you don't like The OC, then don't post a comment.

David Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 02:06 PM EST

The OC sucked anyways...no love lost here. I'm sorry that I was never able to get interested in a 21st century "90210." Good riddance to bad rubbish.

thwarted Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 11:40 AM EST

Last night's episode was so great--Summer doing Hebrew flashcards, Julie kissing you-know-who at the end...I'm really going to miss this show. It's totally Season 1 awesome now.

Hey, O.C. haters: What-ever. I spend all day reading news stories about death and destruction and when I come home on Thursday nights, all I want to see is SETH WITH A BUNNY DOWN HIS PANTS. Is that so wrong?

Jenna Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 11:34 AM EST

I'm so sad. I've watched every episode since day one. It's the only show i watch religiously. And i'm not only sad because i've watched this show for 4 years now...i'm going to really miss hearing what kind of music they put on the show. It was always superb.

Athena Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 10:31 AM EST

I can not believe the OC is finally ending, it seems to me like it just started. I am going to miss it sooooo much, but after Marissa died, I knew that this would probably going to happen. I thind after they said Marissa was coming back and then she really didn't got people mad and the ratings went down. They should put Marissa back on there somehow and I think the ratings would go up and they would not have to cancel it. :)

Robbi Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 08:16 AM EST

OMG I CANT BELIVE THAT ITS FINSHED THAT IS TOTALLY crap... BUT I THINK AS LONG AS WE HAVE ONE TREE HILL I THINK WE WILL BE OK... CAUSE OTH IS KINDA BETTER THEN THE OC... BUT THE OC IS BLOODY WICKED AND I THINK THAT IT SHOULD GO ON 4LONGER LIKE SUM SHOWS... 90210... I LOVE MELROSE PLACE L0L

George Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 06:15 AM EST

I will miss the OC. Season 1 was AMAZING, Season 2 hit or miss (but overall enjoyable), Season 3 was horrible (especially the Johnny/Volcheck stories). Season 4? Back on track! So of course the show would get cancelled. Oh well. I will miss it. Taylor was a fantastic addition, Kaitlin I'm starting to like, and the rest of cast seems re-enrgized. Sorry it had to end, but the rating weren't there. I just wish we got a FULL season 4, not just 17 eps.

P.S. Dawson's Creek was a crapfest that blew huge chunks. Not worthy to lick the OC's boots...hell, One Tree Hill is more enjoyable than Dawson's Crap...

nathan Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 06:10 AM EST

OMG to Crystal :O I think ill start a petition to have you sent over to Iraq so you can do something meaningful with your life!

Oolong Chang Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 03:38 AM EST

The O.C. has really fallen a long way. Dawson's Creek aged much more gracefully, b/c the Creek actually developed characters and addressed meaningful issues. The O.C. was a flash in the pan that seemed witty and intelligent at first, because it poked fun at itself and made no pretensions about what it is, an addictive but pedestrian teen soap drama. That joke wore thin after season one, and in season 4, the joke is on the O.C. Let it go.

Crystal Fri, Jan 5, 2007 at 03:29 AM EST

The network has decided that The OC did not have enough viewers so the show has been cancelled. I am sure that I am not the only viewer that is going to be very upset about this. I am hoping that all my fellow OC lovers are willing to join with me in protesting this horrible decision. Please state your name and email address for contact information. I WILL BE SENDING IT TO THE NETWORK!!!!! I will really miss this show if they don't return it back on air!!!!!

I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT SETH!!!! come on show your love people!!!!!!

dude...just watch Grey's Anatomy on thursdays. it's okay...good things end...remember Friends and That 70s Show?

dont worry about it Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 10:24 PM EST

ok, so this sucks?
i do like to watch the oc. im not one of those crazed fans that is going to die if its cancelled. i figured this would be the last season, but why make it short lived?
sure, people are pissed over marisa leaving. GET OVER IT. i was never a big marisa fan anyway. mischa barton isn;t that good of an actress.
i think the show is great now. its hilarious and all the will they/wont they drama is there. so why aren't people watching? maybe because they are mad at the fact that marisa is gone, but if you liked the show, then you wouldn't care. maybe people aren't watching because greys anatomy is on at the same time.
seriously, keep it for the people who watch it. at least finish the 4th season. you owe us that much.

laurel Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 08:34 PM EST

This is the best day of my life.

Amy Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 08:14 PM EST

I'm in shock right now... I cant believe they would choose to axe it, just as its getting good again!! FOX is just the worst... *cries*

t3hdow Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 08:08 PM EST

Wow amber. Did you read anything I said? You claim I don't have a life, even though I defended you OC fans against Kate who stated the same thing about you guys, even though I'm not an OC fan? Geez...

I understand that losing a show you like sucks. I'm just saying I find it silly some of you complained that Fox never gave it a chance. Four seasons is pretty lengthy for a show you guys claimed Fox never gave a chance. Far too many good shows get axed after the first or second seasons. If a network is dissatisfied with a show's ratings past that point, then it's fair to say they gave it enough of a chance.

I'm not saying the anger isn't warranted, but Fox gave it a fair chance compared to the many other shows they axed.

t3hdow Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 07:55 PM EST

To purple diva:

Glad I'm not the only Reunion fan still sulking over Fox ending it prematurely. I don't think it'll be on DVD though, since the producers only finished 13 episodes before the show stopped airing (I'm aware Fox aired ten episodes, but they never showed the other three). It would be pointless to only present those left over episodes, since it still doesn't properly end the story. It sucks, big time.

But if you don't mind hearing the possible ending the writers planned on doing, read on. (I don't have a valid source though, so it might be false...still, read at your own risk)

Apparently, Sam's killer is actually her illegitimate daughter shw had with Will. How did it happen? The details are sparse, but it explains that Craig cheated on his wife again (which makes Jenna's 'I still won't forgive you for what you did to Sam' comment valid). His latest affair was with Sam's daughter. He wanted to break it off, but Craig refused. Not too long later, Craig got into the car accident that temporarily paralyzed him (Sam's daughter may or may not have been involved). When he realized walking wasn't an impossibility, his dad told him to fake it to receive sympathy from Sam and to strengthen his political stance. Then the twenty year reunion came around. When Sam's daughter spotted Craig's wife, she had no clue it was her mother Sam. Then she murdered Sam later on and the whole conspiracy plot that started the series began.

Now that the killer's been apprehended, Will in 2006 visits his daughter and tells her about Sam and his affair that resulted in her birth. She was devastated once she knew the truth about the mom she murdered. The last scene shows Will walking towards Craig. Will felt extreme anger over Craig's actions and stated to him that Craig ruined his life - the car accident in 1986 and the events afterward spiraling out of control - not to mention Will secretly loved Sam over the years and suffered from the constant dread of knowing their relationship would never work. With that said, he pulled out a pistol and kills Craig.

Again, it might not be 100% valid, but if the ending was anything close to that surprise conclusion, I'm all the more pissed Fox decided to end the series.

amber Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 07:53 PM EST

if you dont like the oc then why are you leaving comments on it?..really get a damn life

IDNARB7901 Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 07:48 PM EST

ONLY 4 SEASONS??? WHAT GIVES SHOWS USED TO STAY ON THE AIR FOR EVER!! HINTS...90210~!!!ANYWAY THAT REALLY SUCKS AND I HATE THAT IT IS GETTING CANNED I LOVE THE OC!!!!!

t3hdow Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 07:22 PM EST

I never liked the OC, so this isn't bad news for me. It was so dreadfully boring, I could barely stand watching it.

What I don't get is most of you saying Fox never gave it a chance. Huh? Granted I can understand losing a show you love over awful ones that litter the time slots sucks a lot (I'm no American Idol junkie either). Still, this show lasted past the three season mark. And Arrested Development almost made it past the three season mark as well, despite poor ratings. I think that's a pretty long time for a network to give a show a chance, especially one as trigger happy as Fox. I can understand Firefly though. Thirteen episodes with a few of them out of order (not to mention a few unaired ones) is pretty bad. Or my personal one, Reunion, a 20 episode mini-series that was axed halfway with no conclusion (Vanished suffered the same fate, but that show sucked compared to NBC's Kidnapped). I'm not saying your anger isn't warranted. I'm just saying it's kinda ridiculous to state that Fox never gave it a chance.

And Kate, it's funny that you of all people are telling these fans to get a life. You're taking the time to irritate and stereotype them with your immature and homophibic insults on a message board with people you're never going to meet, yet you accuse them of not having a life? Ironic, don't you think?

PURPLE_DIVA Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 07:17 PM EST

I am 43 and was drawn into the show by my 23 yr old daughter who grew up in love with 90210.

I have to say we both agreed it was coming to an end when they killed off Ryan's girl (sorry I can't think of her name). It's a good show and dealt with some issues teens and early adults do and was handled in a fun and light hearted way.

I'm not surprised though. FOX is notorious for cancelling shows I seem to start liking. However, even we started missing episodes this season and felt the end was coming if we weren't even compelled to watch.

I'll miss it, but I'm sure they'll find something else to draw us in just to cancel it again. LOL

Reunion and Point Pleasant are great examples. I don't have a problem with shows ending, I just wish they would wrap them up before they cancel them. I'm still waiting for Reunion to hopefully come to DVD so I can see how it ended, if they did get to film the full show.

Cacciatore Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 06:28 PM EST

What can I possibly say about the demise of the OC? I'm shocked. The show has been a huge part of my life since 2003. I'm going to miss the many characters who've made my primetime evenings so enjoyable over the last couple years!

junior Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 05:06 PM EST

I know there are a bunch of "O.C." lovers in the room, but may I say, I'm an SO glad they cancelled it... The show was like the prom queen who didn't realize the prom ended hours ago... it just lost it's original spark and relevance...

Josh Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 03:54 PM EST

Kate, your statement is bigoted. And Dana, I think it's all a matter of opinion in terms of what the show was like at its best. You can dis the show if you don't like it, but you don't have to dis those who will miss it. Do people get too attached and overreact? Yes, probably, but that's true of any show in season four or longer (even of some shorter shows). You two talk about what age people are, but everyone else I've read here seems a lot more mature than you two. A place like popwatch provides an outlet for people who probably aren't actually shouting in their living rooms at FOX, let them have their outlet in peace.

Dana Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 03:26 PM EST

Kate, that was a harsh generalization, but I do have to admit the people on this board are screeching to a level of immaturity that leads one to believe they are in high school or still holding on to precious baby fat and virginity for dear life. No mature human being with a healthy life, would lose it so badly, over a show that could be called Marginal at best, and illiterately uncreative at worst.

mike Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 02:57 PM EST

Gee, Kate. I only watched the OC when Smackdown and the monster trucks weren't on. Stereotype much?

Kate Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

People that are upset about this lame show being cancelled need to get a life, how old are you guys. To the guy's posting here about the show are so gay, what kind of guy watches The OC anyway.

Stephanie Travitsky Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

The show sucked, but then again I am not 15 so what would I know. However, I must hand it to the person who put their mix tape soundtracks together. These were the best thought out television soundtracks to date! When I was a teen we had 90210 with Color Me Badd. Blah! On the O.C.'s there was Spoon, Jem, Matt Pond P.A., really good stuff.

cRAIG Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

i think we need to relax, just a little. while The O.C. has made a comeback of sorts in Season 4 - calling it GREAT is a bit of a stretch. Josh Schawrtz left the show on cruise control for a good portion of the second and third season, and when he returned full time - it was too late. plenty of people had jumped ship long before Marissa's death...

Kris Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 12:41 PM EST

Ditto to all of you sad peeps and fox haters! I will miss it tons! I hope that at least end it right!

K Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

This announcement, while profoundly sad for me, wasn't a surprise either. I was so irritated with the writers last season, and now that they're FINALLY back on track, FOX has just screwed everyone over. Ugh. I almost hesitate to even watch anything on FOX anymore, for fear the same thing will happen. Thank God for DVD's. Seth Cohen, I miss you already. :(

Ruby Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 12:20 PM EST

A loud resounding CRAP! I knew this would be the last season, I was one with that. And I am so happy to see the OC of yesteryear come to life this season...it has been fantastic, almost to it's season 1 heights without the Oliver. In fact, having Ryan paired up with Taylor was like a breath of fresh air after all the drama with Marissa. I would even go so far as to say that this show has not suffered at all creatively because of Mischa Barton's exit. But the minute stupid FOX put this show on Thursday nights at 9, I have been pissed. In fear that exactly this would happen...to not even give this show the courtesy to make it a full season through May. I was ready to say good-bye, but not so soon. Sad news.

TKSNAKEGRIFFIN Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

First arrested development, now this! Fox is officially the dumbest network ever! Did they see how well the OC did on DVD? They were the top seller nearly every time they were released (AND AT $60, that's no small feat). They would have made money JUST off the DVD sales alone!

Vance Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

Ahhh... Just as it was getting GREAT again! Why do I even bother with Fox anymore?

thwarted Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

Maaaan, what will I do with my Thursday nights now?

jenn Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 10:52 AM EST

Holy crap. This sucks. This season was the best by far . . . perhaps they should have gotten rid of Marissa so we could have had a longer period of enjoyment. Ah let's hope that Taylor and Ryan get it on or get married or something. As long as it's not Seth and Summer. I hope Julie ends up lonely and I pray to God that the ghost of Marissa doesn't show up on the last episode.

julie Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 10:27 AM EST

I, too, gave up Greys to watch the OC this season. Why dont they just move it to a different time slot? Why dont networks do that anymore? I cant think of any other show I watch on Fox. Sometimes House, but its always the same, I DONT watch American Idol except in the beginning when they have all the crappy singers. Unlike most people here, I like The War at Home. I just dont see why networks are so quick to give up on shows. I bet there wont even be a series finale. Im so glad I have FX and USA (go Monk and Psych) because the main networks SUCK SO BAD, they dont leave me with much to watch. I hope another network will pick up this show, but I wont hold my breath.

Justin Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 10:25 AM EST

We can hope that the OC pulls a family guy and is brought back in a year or two.

It is a shame though that we wont see the full potential of Taylor; she is hot and is the anti-marissa. Drama free!

Brandie Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 10:18 AM EST

This is so upsetting!! Now where will I get my fix of plastic ponies, bagels and schmear, mainstream indie rock music, comic books, and fist-fights? *Single tear*

moonshake Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 10:17 AM EST

Another great decision by the braintrust that is the Fox programming dept. ("Arrested Development" of course, and...I was one of the dozen or so people who was actually watching "Point Pleasant" last year.) Goodbye O.C. and just when you were getting good again. I mean, who knew Ryan could actually emote?! With the "level" of programming these guys now have I feel like I'm back in the late 80s when their stellar line-up was: "Married with Chidlren", "The Tracey Ullman Show" and "It's Garry Shandling's Show". Oh wait, those shows WERE actually better than crap like "War at Home". *sigh* At least there's still "24".

Ace Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 09:59 AM EST

Mischa is probably gloating to herself right now. The show obviously could not survive without it's only bona fide star.

Will Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 09:19 AM EST

Should we start sending oranges to the CW?

GT Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 09:13 AM EST

While I am a fan of this show I think it had a good run so what can you do? I am surprised though that they are cancelling it in February rather then letting them finish out the season though.

And comparing this show to Firefly is ridiculous. The reason that show was cancelled was because it was really bad and nobody watched it (the BO results for the movie proved that point).

LaLa Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 08:55 AM EST

I knew I was getting old when I realized that while I enjoyed watching Ryan and Seth and friends, I wanted to marry a guy just like Sandy. He's cool to the kids, he's smart, he's the neighborhood nice guy.
*sigh*
It was fun while it lasted. Does this mean 'Lady Heather' can return to CSI?

Karla Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 07:57 AM EST

"here to blood-curdlingly let you know that..."
Jeez, learn how to write you moron.

MATT Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 07:27 AM EST

Fox you are officially stupid. With all the crap you have on your network, you keep the OC in a death slot of Thursday at 9 just to watch it drown in the infinity pool? This show, while having seen some dips in quality last year has been simply fantastic this season. Some of the best episodes ever. Canceling a quality show like this for crap like stand off, war at home, til death is just retarded. get a clue! The only show i'm gonna be watching on fox now is House but even thats on shaky ground with me lately. I bet if Fox moved to OC back to Wedsnesdays after AI like it was during season 1 the ratings would increase. Please DAWN OSTROFF - PICK UP THIS SHOW NOW! recognize quality characters and story when you see it. Put OTH and 7th Heaven in the ground and spend your money on a show that comes with a loyal audience like this one. The ratings would really help your network. SAVE THE OC CW.

Ryan Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 06:47 AM EST

As upset as I am and as much as I wish Teh CW would pick up this renewed gem, or green-light a Julie/Kaitlin anti Gilmore Girl show, I hope Marc Cherry or someone at Desperate Housewives snatches up Melinda Clarke.... she would own that show!

bianca Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 05:35 AM EST

I could just cry...everytime some tv boss is canceling one of my fave shows....why is that??? Who do you guys ask??? I mean...it's not just the bad ratings...there must be some anonymous polls....somewhere...and those people taking part in them should be forced to watch....I don't know...maybe 24hrs of dynasty reruns or something....please next time before killing a show...ask the fans...or at least count them...maybe its worth it....whatever....B

jake Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 02:51 AM EST

I guess we should be happy that Fox aired all the episodes for this season and thank god for DVD when people who refused to watch this year and who should finally come around, will see what a great season this has been and will see that this show ended way too early.

Jakeem Thu, Jan 4, 2007 at 01:39 AM EST

No, I believe the show jumped the shark when they made Julie Cooper a sympathetic character instead of a scheming golddigger!

Lorenzo Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 11:57 PM EST

Looks like we're going back into the direction of "White Trash" FOX, kids instead of the super-brainy-ultra-cool FOX. Seriously, how can you keep sh*t like "War at Home", "Standoff", "Til Death Do Us Part" and cancel some of your best work ever like "The O.C." *Sighs* I guess I just add this to the list of shows that was too good for this world. "The O.C." meet your neighbors "Wonderfalls", "Everwood" and "The Wire". They, too, was kicked-out by jacked-up a$$hole. :):):)

EP stating the obvious Sato Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 11:13 PM EST

A lot of folks said the folk jumped the shark when dude joined "fight club". Apparently they were right.

The flipside is the OC four season mega ultra super collection with the behind the scenes goodies and the screen tests...hmmmm screen tests

AJ Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 11:03 PM EST

I knew it was coming, I knew it, and I thought I had prepared myself for this day, but I haven't. I am not angry... Im mad as hell. FOX what the hell are you thinking? Thursday night against Greys and CSI? Why did you even pick it up for a fourth season with that time slot. You wanna compete for must see tv, then move your precious American Idol to thursday nights... When the OC ends, Fox, Iam done with you!
Seth and Summer Forever. Julie Cooper is a Godess. And My Thursday nights will never be the same again.

alison Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 10:50 PM EST

I'm actually quite devasated by this news, and quite upset at Fox for cancelling this show and keeping on much crappier shows (ahem, "The War at Home.) Fox is going to regret this decision once they realize that the only show on their network that people actually care about is "American Idol."
That being said, I'm going to go listen to my O.C. music and reflect over how pathetic I am for caring this much about a TV show.

Mozz Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 10:36 PM EST

Dear Fox, I stopped watching you years ago, because even watching an O.C. commercial made my I.Q. drop a few levels. Let's face it, the writing and the acting in that show made Beverly Hills 90210 positively Shakespearean.

Now, I can return, to safely watch House and 24, two shows, I can only watch on DVDs, so I could avoid, any and all having to do with The O.C. an obsession I never quite understood.

Good Decision!

klo Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 10:31 PM EST

i for one, am one sad OC fan.I gave up my Greys to watch it this season. I wish more people had. since day one its been my favorite show, if there is any way it could live on--please -powers that be--keep the show going. its soooo good this season! :( too sad.

Kristin Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 10:24 PM EST

I am so sad right now. I can't believe Fox is actually this stupid. On any other night, this season of The OC would have been pulling in at least what it got for ratings last season, probably more. But they had to keep in the slot of death just so they could watch it waste away. Cool. And a note to Josh Schwartz- Don't leave the party! If the CW or any other network wants you to stay, grab another drink and stay! Pleeeasee?!

Sarah Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 09:56 PM EST

Dear Fox,

Here we are yet again. As usual I was lured in by a show's quirky characters and witty dialogue. You nurtured this interest by throwing in some funny plotlines and some decent music. And it was at the moment that I really became hooked that you lost interest in me. This first became evident in some ill-conceived stories (Oliver and Alex, I'm looking in your direction), and quickly spiraled into out and out games of hide and seek (Wednesdsay, Thursday, twice a week- forgive us if we can't keep it straight). And now, just as this season is panning out to be one of the best, you go and pull the plug. But I should have known. I mean, its not like we haven't been down this road before with Arrested Development.

What will you and I learn from this? Probably nothing. You will continue to dish out mediocre programming, and I will continue to sift through it in the hopes of finding another gem like the O.C. or Arrested Development. Then you will cancel it so we can begin the cycle again. *Sigh*

Sincerely,
The Viewer

P.S. How about this for a compromise- for every show you cancel, I get to cancel one too. What do you think? Since you've gone ahead and made the first move, my vote is now for "The War at Home" to get the ax.

Dylan Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 09:55 PM EST

This freakin' sucks. Although, I knew it was coming. How sad that the show will never see a 5th season. May I offer a short list of other piece of crap shows that deserve to be cancelled in place of Th OC? grey's anatomy, csi, studio 60, all reality shows except Real World And The Challenges...This really freakin' sucks. I was hoping for one more season. I hope they at least knew they were filming the series finale and got to send everyone off properly.

Jackson Fust Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 09:17 PM EST

What the hell fox? what else are you going to air? why dont you move the oc to a night where the legion of girl fans it had that you let down last season and moved on to loving greys anatomy could come back to it? worst news of the year. f you fox. & fyi, american idol sucks. just so you know...

BOYCOTT FOX!

Cassie Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 09:07 PM EST

NOOOOOO!!! It was SO much better this season. Taylor + Ryan > Marissa + Ryan. The only good thing about this? It just made Thursday night TV choices easier.

Amanda Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 08:54 PM EST

Nice job, FOX. You've kept "The War at Home" on for multiple seasons, and yet put (and KEPT!) a show that was NOT painful to watch in the timeslot of death.

Makes no sense to me, but I hope this season ends on a strong note.

RayT Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 08:51 PM EST

This is all Mischa Barton's fault! Shows never get cancelled until people start leaving them! I'm organizing a campaign called Mischa: Impossible and we're all going to congregate outside her home and pelt her with her uneaten pancakes from The Bait Shop when she leaves to go meet Nicole Richie at The Ivy!

But seriously, now that The O.C. is no more, who's going to tell me what indie music to download to my iPod making me appear much more musically distinguished than I actually am?!

Christina Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 08:43 PM EST

Ii's sad to see The O.C go, but it was pretty clear that this season would be it. At least FOX is letting the season play out so we get a conclusion

Nicole Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 08:35 PM EST

OK. Can I just say that I am a HUGE O.C. fan and this news is devastating to me! Although, I did kind of see something of this nature coming. I just never thought it would really happen. I know that The O.C. has never surpassed its first season, but I thought season two was really good. In season 3 they did lag a little, bc I didn't really care to much for that season even though I still love the show. In season 4 I felt like that was the test for the show, if they kicked butt with the start of season 4 and Rachel Bilson took on the role of the lead female character well then the show would be in the clear for at least a season 5. I totally love this season and I think everyone is doing an awesome job, especially Rachel Bilson, she really took to the challenge nicely. It leaves me to wonder why so many fans just gave up on such an awesome show! While I am having a serious emotional moment over this loss it did have a good run. Even though its cancelled I'll always love this show!!! RIP OC! <3

Vicky Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 07:53 PM EST

Boooo Fox!! I can never really trust this network with any show that I like. Firefly comes to mind right away. The OC should have never been in that timeslot. Ah well. Now we can sit through 5 nights of American Idol...cause that show never gets old. Excuse me while I pray for my other beloved Fox show, Bones. David Boreanaz better watch his back. Fox can be very sneaky.

Phil Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 07:26 PM EST

How is it that Fox axes The O.C. and yet STILL has STAND OFF on their schedule!?! Have the execs at Fox been partying with Ms. Spears over the holidays?!?! This is probably the worst news I have heard ALL day. I have stood by The O.C. since it was a summer replacement series back in 2003, and am totally saddened to see it go, just as I, as well as many other fans felt the magic was returning to Newport. I hope many of the regular stars/guests from season 1 like Jimmy, Luke, and Anna return for the finale (sadly, NOT Oliver). Guess I'll just have to get back to CALIFORNIA, CALIFORNIA...HERE WE COME...for my fix of sands and soap suds now!

beachmom Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 07:15 PM EST

are you crazy? of course i want to see julie cooper nichol ho'ing it up at the nursing home...i want to see sandy white-haired...i want to see kirsten get bloated and menopausal...
boo hoo...i guess we can hope for a Very Special Christmukha reunion show... and what bad timing, the day of the last ep my viewing buddy - my 16 year old daughter - will be away on vaca with friends...how sad to watch it alone!!!! i'm crying already!!!

aramis Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 07:11 PM EST

What is this "O.C." of which you speak? *raises eyebrow*

El Franco Wed, Jan 3, 2007 at 06:59 PM EST

Fox really hates keeping good shows. My faves like Firefly, Wonderfalls, Arrested Development, and now OC have been targeted for death by them. They were not really given a fair chance at showing what real good shows can do.

Now I'm going to miss the comic book exploits of Seth, the brooding of Ryan, the whimsyness of Summer, and I will never see the full potential fun of Taylor.

Thanks a lot FOX for shooting down another good show that showed so much promise.

Fox is the dumbest net on TV! Everytime I start to love a show, they cancel it! fastlane, Family Guy, now my all time fav Dramedy gets the ax! As Seth Cohen would say, "THIS IS RIDUNKULOUS"! O.C. You will be missed!

I don't share the universal theory that the OC was back. The episode where someone steals the purse with the pregancy test was pretty silly. The Taylor character talks fast without being funny. Julie hooks up with a different guy every month?
Season one was the highlight. The steady descent happened after that. If Fox would have given the show a chance, they would have airlifted it out of Thursday night.
R.I.P. O.C.
