Today's mancrush: Alec Baldwin

152210__30_l Hey, am I crazy or has Alec Baldwin been the most consistently entertaining enterainer of autumn 2006? I mean, he’s always been an interesting presence. He survived his encounter with leading-man syndrome, even weathered his brush with superherodom, and finally jettisoned his vanity and fully embraced his inner heavy. He grew up and out, and turned into the fascinating monster you see in The Departed and 30 Rock (pictured). Guy doesn’t even have to raise his voice anymore. It’s all a low roll of thunder. He’s like some outer-borough Black Irish hybrid of Robert Mitchum and John Huston.

(I haven’t seen Running With Scissors or early screenings of The Good Shepherd, but I’m betting The Greatest of Baldwins acquits himself admirably. Also: What gives, YouTubers? No Baldwin clips from The Cooler, his near-Oscar moment? The 'Tube ain’t dead yet, folks: Infringe like the wind, while you still can!)

I guess what I’m saying is: I’d like Alec Baldwin to come to my house and tell me I'm not man enough to sell real estate. With this in mind, Alec Baldwin, I have left my keys under your mat. Yes, your mat, Alec Baldwin. Not mine. This is the highest honor I can bestow without additional funding.

The only time I regret not living in NYC is when I "hear" Alec Baldwin is on stage appearing in a show I would like to see. I wish, because I love his voice, that he would record some books, after all one dosen't have to get "made-up" or into costume or rehearse quite as much for audio recordings as for other performances. I was happy to read that he spends a good portion of his time contributing his skills to live theater behind the scenes as well as on stage.

His recent performances on 30 Rock have definitely brought him back to the forefront of Hollywood mancrushing, without a doubt.

jaime Fri, Nov 3, 2006 at 12:31 AM EST

His character in 30 Rock, The Departed, The Cooler, Glengarry Glenross are EXACTLY THE SAME. He doesn't appeal to me at all, plus he seems like a sleazy guy in real life.

i've got to say. alec baldwin is probably one of the greatest living actors.
where's his oscar already dammitt?

JillyRo Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 04:16 PM EST

LOVE him as character actor, he found his niche.

Ironic that he gets more movie work than his ex-wife, Kim Basinger who won an Academy Award.

Ok, for the 30 Rock watchers-- he didnt yell at the paige- Tracy dealt with the paige the whole time, right?
"go get help" to the rat- priceless. He yelled at Lemon... snap snap.

EW, get him on the cover STAT. he deserves a write-up and long feature article. NOW!

Talented and fearless is an unbeatable combination . . .

aramis Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 02:28 PM EST

"Five inches, but it's thick."

I mean, the dude said this in his patented low-tone with a straight face.

Comic GENIUS!

I Love Tina Fey for bringing this out in him on 30Rock.

Jane Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 02:02 PM EST

Does anybody remember the first time he was on SNL? That episode won an Emmy and deservedly so. Everything Alec Baldwin did on that episode was brilliant. My ex-boyfriend (who I hate) and I bonded over the fact that we both were desperately looking for a copy of Alec Baldwin making out with Phil Hartman and that dog in "Greenhilly" on Ebay.

Dave Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 12:29 PM EST

Between 30 Rock, The Departed, Running with Scissors, and The Good Shepherd, we better see Baldwin as one of the entertainers of the year in EW's year-end issue. He has been fantastic and hilarious in everything I've seen him in this fall. Last week's episode of 30 Rock had me laughing to the point that my roommates came downstairs to see what was wrong with me. He better be up on the stage come Emmy time.

Nose Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 12:18 PM EST

I LOVE LOVE LOVE him on 30 Rock. I hope NBC really gives this show a chance because between Baldwin and Tracey Morgan and Tina Fey, I am in stitches the whole time.

Baldwin plays comedy not for laughs...which is what makes it even funnier.

Although last nights episode was not the best, I loved the wink and nod to Studio 60 when they did the walk and talk and wound up in the original spot. That was comedy and a nice dig at the failing show.

Jake Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 11:39 AM EST

Alec Baldwin can come to MY house too, but I don't think we would be doing much talking. Woof!

rc Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 10:56 AM EST

I worked with him on a show off-broadway a few months ago...and while his performance on stage was good, his demeanor backstage was awful. That truly killed it for me. Now I can't see anything he's in without wanting to hurl.

Ed Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 10:20 AM EST

I really really really like Alec B as an older actor, he's got "daddy" written all over him. One thing I
would like to see though is that he lose that weight!

When I saw him on the last season of Will & Grace, Runing with Sciss and now 30 Rock, I feel like he is going to drop of a heart attack any time now.

Alec, use some of that money of yours to lose it, tone up and look f*cking sexier than every.

If you do, I'll dress up like Chritina Agulera and sing Nasty Naughty Boy to you ; )

JakesBoy Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 10:12 AM EST

Alec Baldwin is genius in "30 Rock"!! He WILL be on the Emmy stage next year (or should be). His "Hannibal Lector" speach to the NBC page had me rolling!!

I knew he was going to be good on this show when he guest starred on "Will & Grace" - his comic timing is perfect!!

I always dug his work on SNL. Whether playing a christian businessman with a porno actin' past, or a bakery owner who told Molly Shannon about his delicious balls on an innuendo-laden radio show skit, the man's proven he can keep a straight face no matter how oddball the scenario. I don't even think Steve Colbert can match that stone face!

marykate Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 09:42 AM EST

Oh, The Shadow!

My sister was obessesed with that movie. She even went out and bought the original radio recordings on cassette.

We were nerdy kids.

Ceballos Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 09:40 AM EST

I don't know...The Shadow...I liked it.

However, my favorite all-time Alec Baldwin moment has to be:

"F*** you! That's my name!" -Glengarry GlenRoss

peggy Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 08:52 AM EST

I wasn't crazy about him as a leading man, but as a character actor he's great. I now look forward to seeing him in things. However, nothing can top his SNL appearance as Mr. Schwety.

j.fo Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 08:50 AM EST

Yes, yes, a million times YES. I've said for many years that - although he has leading man looks - he really shines as a character actor. Glad he's finally agreed. LOVE him.

CJ Thu, Nov 2, 2006 at 08:21 AM EST

Alec Baldwin is one of the most underrated actors on the planet; be it comedy, drama, action, he brings real passion to the screen and gets you involved in his character; that way, you learn to love him and to hate him as well; I still remember his remarkable stint in Knotts Landing, when his character evolved from a very sexy and passionate preacher into a total psycho... Although last night's episode of 30 Rock was not as good, last week's installment, with Alec playing the "evil" poker player was nothing but brilliant. I look forward to seeing him in "Running with Scissors". He is a great actor.
