Things That Make Me Die Inside (Vol. 5)

Nov 14, 2006, 05:56 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Books, Current Affairs, Television, Things That Make Me Die Inside

Some things are so unbelievably offensive, they require no comment whatsoever. And with that -- just in time for November sweeps, mind you -- I give you a press release issued moments ago by the good folks at Fox. (Trust me, I only wish we were making this up.)

JUDITH REGAN’S EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH O.J. SIMPSON

“O.J. SIMPSON: IF I DID IT, HERE’S HOW IT HAPPENED”

TO AIR AS A TWO-PART SPECIAL ON FOX

Special to Air Over Two Nights:

Monday, November 27, and Wednesday, November 29

Over 10 years after he was tried for two murders in the "Trial of the Century" that captured the attention of the world, O.J. Simpson, in his own words, tells for the first time how he would have committed the murders if he were the one responsible for the crimes. Noted publisher Judith Regan will talk with Simpson in a wide-ranging, no-holds-barred interview that will be the basis of a two-part special, O.J. SIMPSON: IF I DID IT, HERE’S HOW IT HAPPENED (working title), airing Monday, Nov. 27 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Wednesday, Nov. 29 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

The Simpson criminal and civil trials captivated people around the world for a decade, and now no topics are off-limits -- Simpson has agreed to an unrestricted interview with Regan. In the two-part event, Simpson describes how he would have carried out the murders he has vehemently denied committing for over a decade.

"This is an interview that no one thought would ever happen. It’s the definitive last chapter in the Trial of the Century," said Mike Darnell, Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming.

Although acquitted of murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, Simpson was later sued in civil court, found responsible for both murders and ordered to pay $33.5 million in restitution to the families of the victims. A decade later, Simpson has written a book that hypothetically describes how the murders would have been committed. If I Did It will go on sale Thursday, Nov. 30, under the REGAN imprint.

The solution on OJ, Regan, Murdoch, Fox is being established.

And it shall be fair and balanced.

Tony Fri, Nov 17, 2006 at 01:11 AM EST

Ok, OJ’s a psycho, we knew that. I think the big scumbag here is Judith Regan, his publisher from Harper Collins. There’s a groundswell of us who will try to hit OJ’s publisher where it hurts:

(1) We will not only boycott OJ’s book, but if OJ’s book is displayed in any bookstore, we will inform the manager of that store directly that we will be buying all our books online.

(2) We will try to encourage bloggers (like you?) to post a synopsis of the book’s account on the net somewhere and spread the word. That way, anyone who simply can’t help themselves (or are sick enough to actually want to read it) will be able to find out what the book says without having to buy it. (the best way to ruin a movie is to spread the word about how it ends) That way we won’t line Judith Regan’s pockets.

(3) Continue emailing Harper Collins and Fox.

JOIN THE OUTRAGE.

MakeMyDay Thu, Nov 16, 2006 at 08:14 PM EST

Sombody with a good lawyer should scan the book and publish it on the internet for free so that nobody makes a dime on it.
Mr. Goldman, are you listening?

Stephanie T. Thu, Nov 16, 2006 at 10:16 AM EST

EP, Jenna Jameson has her own next porn star contest on the Playboy Channel, and from time to time Jermey has been a judge.

MC Thu, Nov 16, 2006 at 06:23 AM EST

How would Fox know whether I watch it or not?

I plan to boycot any advertizers during those two hours - can anyone post a list, so I won't have to watch and contribute to the rating?

bootsycolumbia Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 11:13 PM EST

I've never believed in boycotts, because I think they're just a holier-than-thou form of censorship, but I think this program, and Fox airing it, begs for some sort of boycott. Either gather a list of the companies venal enough to advertise during this travesty, or go a step further and boycott Fox! We may not be able to control what Fox puts on its network, and I know, I know, just change the channel and refuse to watch such crap, but I believe that such steps aren't good enough. Fox is constantly airing crud like this (and cancels quality shows like Arrested Development in the process), and it's only going to get worse if the average viewer just accepts it as inevitable. So I say tell Fox to clean up its act, or say goodbye to ratings, and revenue, until they do.

Mike Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 11:12 PM EST

Before you tune in, remember this isn't going to be a Barbara Walters-style special with OJ sobbing and confessing his sins. This is going to be a nudge-nudge, wink-wink, now-you're-in-on-the-joke-too infomercial.

Do you want to be in on this joke? Fight back people! Contact FOX TV, Harper Collins and Regan Books and tell them how disgusted you are.

Regan Books is located in Century City at 10100 Santa Monica Blvd (10th Floor) and the phone number of their managing editor (Cassie Jones) is 310-228-6250. Her e-mail address is cassie.jones@harpercollins.com.

Regan Books is part of Harper Collins Publishing. They can be reached (and complained to) at 212-207-7000.

t3hdow Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 08:55 PM EST

Well daisyj, I did kinda imply that we, the consumers, do have the power to not support this show or the book. Maybe it got lost in the mix of what I said. The same could be said for advertisers, like you mentioned. Hell, if the recent version of Survivor offended some people to the point to lift ads, I don't see why it wouldn't happen here.

Unfortunately, there will be a large amount of people watching this. Not that I'm discouraging anyone from rebelling against this show, but look at Nancy Grace. Since she verbally abused a woman over an unproven crime (she might have killed her infant son) AFTER Grace promised her the interview wouldn't play on the air - she was so humiliated, the woman committed suicide - Grace's show's ratings GREW. If that could happen, there's no doubt in my mind Fox will score big over this. They already did it once with Michael Jackson's interview (I think it was Fox...I'm not sure). Regardless of whatever protesting we do or death threats they receive, they're still going to air it.

Ep Sato Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 08:04 PM EST

Ron Jeremy's got a reality based gameshow on Playboy? I thought Hugh Heffner was a higher class of pornographer than that. Does this mean the magazine's no longer worth reading for the articles?

daisyj Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 06:16 PM EST

t3hdow:

The thing is, there *is* something we can do about this. It's happened before when enough people express their disgust about something that's being presented as "entertainment"; advertisers stay away, affiliates refuse to run it and the network gets a lot less money. So yeah, even though it doesn't have global or historic implications, I think that letting a (probable) murderer profit from bragging about his (alleged) crimes is bad enough to deserve some outrage.

Stephanie Travitsky Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 06:14 PM EST

Exactly EP but, "who wants to be a porn star" is already on the P.B. Channel. However,Ron Jermey is a judge so I would call it "who wants to scare the next porn star".

It is now a world of shock value entertainment and sooner or later anything and everything will go. I am not conservative, nudity is not a problem if the kids are in bed, but there has been an unsual amount of violence on television and I am not going to be surprised to see it turn into a live reality program or something. I am not talking the network news, I am talking about what EP said, live executions or something discpicable. OJ being allowed to say that if he did do it this is how he would have done it is vomitus. Maybe he did not do it but he had been known to beat up Nicole and the b-tard took off in his Ford Bronco like a bat out of hell! Is M.J. going to step forward and do a program like "If did molest boys, this is how I would do it" too?!

sara Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 05:57 PM EST

Just...ewwwwww. I mean really, yuck. And what kind of a gutless moraless, spinelss publisher is actually publishing this crap? i thought they had more esteem than that. And what about all the idiots in the world who are just gonna lap this up? They don't write books or produce shows if there isn't an audience for it. I am grossed out.

t3hdow Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 05:14 PM EST

To Karla, since her post is partially aimed towards me:

I don't agree with this show being aired or anything like that. I feel sorry for the victim's families and OJ's kids for having to deal with this on a regular basis. For everyone else not related to the victims, I'm just saying...why get worked up over something you can't help change? If you don't want to support the show or book, fine. I don't condone murder either. I just think the OJ case received way too much media attention than it should have and this FOX show just further proves that (same with the Michael Jackson's interview/trial, but I'm not getting into that).

At its most superficial, the OJ case is a not-too-unusual murder case blown way out of proportion by the media. The reasons OJ's case is such a big deal is because:
a) it just further perpetuates the stereotype that rich people/celebs can get away with anything
b) OJ was formerly such a loved celebrity figure prior to the trial
c) it keeps getting brought up in such a lax manner for publicity's sake, usually by OJ himself (not smart if you ask me)

Unlike say 9/11, the OJ trial isn't something that could be called a world changing event. True, our legal system could be questioned by this case, but I doubt generations from now, it hardly matters in the grand scheme of things. It's better to focus our energies on things we could help prevent or to assist other people in dire need than focus on OJ any further. It's not twisted and sick to think so otherwise. It's just almost meaningless to get angry about it now. If no one cared this much about the trial in the first place, would this show even exist to bring out the worst in us?

I'm not defending OJ, this show or any act of murder mind you, but a few other posters said it best. OJ doing this for attention. If we (Fox included) stopped giving him said attention, then OJ would further devolve into an irredeemable pariah. That's enough of a punishment for anyone to bear.

Ep Sato Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 04:33 PM EST

Stephanie T is right. What's next on Fox? Ryan Seacrest hosting a live execution? Or maybe Billy Bush will present a "very special" snuff film? Or Peter North hosting "who wants to be a porn star?"

For every great series that comes out and moves tv forward, a special will air every now and then that will use all of its power to set our whole country back by a good ten years.

kennyk Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 04:18 PM EST

I invite you all to read my blog on this topic on myfoxmilwaukee.com. It is titled "Another 'Simpson' on FOX" and I have some pretty candid things to say about the former football star/bad actor/homicidal maniac.
Check it out. Thanks.

Stephanie Travitsky Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 03:58 PM EST

Coming soon to FOX: Jenna Jameson shows how to give a b-job to an elephant on live air!

Please! I can't believe that they are allowing OJ to do this kind of a show.

Tommy G. Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 01:43 PM EST

Wow. Someone at Fox has got a really big set of "Itos" to air this garbage. Either that, or an I.Q. at the same level as a shoebox. I suspect both. And as for O.J.? I can promise you that if I ever ran into him, I certainly wouldn't stick around and wait for him to find a knife...

daisyj Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 01:11 PM EST

Appalling isn't even the word. I'm not one for boycotts, but if someone did put together a list of advertisers, like someone here suggested, I might just have to cross them off my shopping list. For good.

Jen Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 12:16 PM EST

This is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard.

Kayla Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 11:58 AM EST

It's this FOX's idea of "fair and balanced"? How sick is this.... I feel for his kids, and for Nicole and Ron's families. I bet they feel like Nicole and Ron will be murdered again by this taunting and attention-grabbing murderer. Shame on you, FOX.

Nancy Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 11:44 AM EST

I will not watch or buy. Real people with real children and families were murdered. Don't support this.

Howard Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 11:23 AM EST

Thank goodness that he was able to take time out from his arduous search for the real killers to write this landmark tome, and then to film the two hour special to promote it.

It's things like this where I'm torn between Fox's responsibility to make money for their shareholders and employees and their responsibility to the public as a free network. If negative ratings were a possibility, that is what I'd wish for them.

Aside from being imprisoned, the worst thing we could do to OJ is ignore him. Liv, I don't know how you could be looking forward to this; personally I like Kitty's idea. I'll even help get the wolves.

Scott P Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 11:08 AM EST

I've got an idea, why doesn't EW or someone else track the companies that are stupid enough to actually put ads on during that show, and all of the intelligent and respectable people of the world can boycott those products. Maybe that will dissuade them a bit.

Jedidog Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 10:59 AM EST

Just watch, this is going to break ratings records. As despicable as this is, everyone in the universe is going to turn in. This guy is the biggest train wreck outside of Michael Jackson and we all know how that interview turned out.

Mark my words: BIG, BIG ratings (but at what cost to the morals of society)

Ep Sato Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 10:13 AM EST

ten years ago I did a painting of OJ Simpson done Andy Warhol style. In the painting, he's being framed, my comment on the trial at the time. Ten years later, that painting seems so ironic to me.

Many lingering issues went unanswered. Like, who was Kato, really? I've heard a lot of speculation that he was OJ's live-in cocaine hook up, which would explain why his freeloading ass got to live it up in the guesthouse AND take skiing trips with OJ's ex-wife. Did drugs have something to do with the death of Nicole?

And did anyone really believe that Goldman was really just returning some sunglasses to Nicole when it happened? To quote Chris Rock "You could leave a baby in a restaurant and they wouldn't return it to you". It's pretty clear to me that Nicole was totally hooking up with the waiter.

At the end of it all, the living victims are OJ's kids, who grew up without a mom. And whether or not he actually did it, it sickens me that OJ Simpson continues to make $$$ off this tragedy. OJ acts as if it's some kind of joke that two people were killed in cold blood. And it's kinda' creepy the way he seems to enjoy the image the murders created for him.

colbyfan Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 08:54 AM EST

Wouldn't some of the proceeds from this debacle have to go to the Goldmans for the civil suit debt? This makes me so angry. Add this to the success of everyone associated with Scientology, cancer, and Nancy Grace as one of my top 10 questions for God.

Dawn Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 08:40 AM EST

I just threw up a little in my mouth. This is sick!!!! OJ needs to shut the hell up and go away. Fox does surprise me by doing this since they are owned by Satan incarnate.

Catty Canuck Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 08:38 AM EST

Isn't this just a step or two away from a snuff film? Watch this at your eternal soul's peril - and I'm an atheist . . .

Karla Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 08:21 AM EST

I don't know what disgusts me more, this show or the people with the "hey, there are worse things going on" attitude. Ok, I am more the disgusted by the former but latter is pretty bad. It seems like murdering people should be at the top of the list of Bad Things Going On. Especially when it's murdering people, getting away with it, then profiting by bragging about it. Copping an attitude that it's all not a big because it happened "so long ago", "things happen", says there's something really wrong with people.

Mike Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 12:19 AM EST

The interviewer is the publisher of his book! This is a two-hour commercial!!!!!!!

Call/write/email Fox and tell them to stop this madness.

t3hdow Wed, Nov 15, 2006 at 12:17 AM EST

I just want to find the guy who actually greenlit this idea. He's got balls...I'm not sure if even the beyond tasteless Nancy Grace could top this...

Anyway, I think there are more things we should get pissed off about these days that clinging this much into a past trial. He did it, maybe he didn't do it; I don't care when people who don't give two s#its about it are suffering in the world, including our own soldiers overseas. That's something to get pissed over more than this. The only reason OJ's so hated is because he was once a loved celebrity that got away with murder. If it were any everyday person, I doubt we'd care this much (Scott Peterson being an exception).

Guy Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 10:46 PM EST

While there is no statute of limitation for murder in any state, and given the fact that Juice can't be re-tried for the same crime (double jeopardy), I am amazed that he would willingly put himself on trial again with the U.S. public. If he gave all the proceeds to his children, rather than to support his golf habit, he would have a better shot at ending up in a slightly less-hot corner of hell.

Tracy Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 10:45 PM EST

It just goes to show that even though justice was miscarried when we let that jackass off, we still managed to take away the one thing OJ valued more than anything else: his status as a beloved, accepted celebrity. If he'd gone to jail he'd be a martyr; this is a special kind of hell prison could never have provided, and that gives me at least a certain satisfaction. Now he's grasping for anything he can to keep in the spotlight, up to and including confessing, just because the truth is the only thing left he can sell. And he's only partially selling it here; wait till next year when Fox airs "OJ Simpson: Okay, I Did It! Really! Hey, Is Anyone Out There? Hello?"

A.J. Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 10:27 PM EST

I think I threw up a little in my mouth after seeing the commercial for this during "House."

junior Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 09:38 PM EST

I just feel bad for the kids.

Liv Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 09:27 PM EST

Good for OJ. There is worse things on TV & going on in the world, i.e. real cancer, than this. Boo hoo, if you don't like it, don't watch! I can't wait to get the book...

yawn Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 09:27 PM EST

The words "IF I DID IT" are conditional. The words "HERE'S HOW IT HAPPENED" are confessional. OJ should be re-arrested, re-indicted, re-tried and found guilty as charged, as would have befitted justice all those years ago.

Rahul Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 09:08 PM EST

I think a quote from "Network" (one of my fav movies) fits the bill:

"We're not a respectable network. We're a whorehouse, and we'll take what we can get."

mishamishamisha Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 08:41 PM EST

Is there a statute of limitations on murder in California? If not, heads up to the prosecutor's office...YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE NOTES! The idea that this twit can waste two hours of valuable air time (like, let's use the two hours to raise money for the homeless, Fox) makes me sick. I won't be watching it...and I will definitely reassess my Fox viewing. Any network that jumps on this bandwagon is a few bricks shy of a full load!!

Martha Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 08:21 PM EST

File this unbelievably offensive crap under Things that Make me Die Inside and Programs I'd Rather Stick Needles in my Eyes than Watch.

Vicky Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 07:48 PM EST

Just disturbing. Hey FOX! Wanna play with the big boys (ABC, NBC, and CBS)? Stop putting crap like this on the air!

Maeve Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 07:46 PM EST

WHAT! OJ, can't you at least continue pretending to be innocent for the sake of your two kids with Nicole?

Eli Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 07:44 PM EST

if there ever was a person who was made to get cancer is O.J. simpson, the day he dies, I'm throwing a big party.

Cliff Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 07:31 PM EST

My question is, how does this "nudge nudge wink wink" interview spread over 2 hours? Since it's FOX, I gotta figure that in between describing his "hypothetical" murder, he'll also 1) show how magic tricks are done; 2) Invite 20 women with low self-esteem to compete to marry him; 3) Show off his full-body tattoo detailing every aspect of his cunning plan. If anyone sees me watching even a second of this, please stab my eyes out with a fork.

Kitty Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 07:28 PM EST

OJ should be torn apart by wolves. As should all Fox executives and Judith Regan. This makes me sick. How must poor Fred Goldman feel.

Denise Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 06:49 PM EST

This is so beyond making me die inside.........this makes me want to hunt down every idiot member of that jury and extract some rough justice! "If I did it", my eye!
On another note, I wonder how ol' Fair and Balanced Bill O'Reilly feels about his network being assosciated with THAT crap?!?!?!

Cliff Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 06:42 PM EST

Thank you Fox, for cancelling Arrested Development. At the time, I was so upset, but now it makes perfect sense. Quality programming has truly won out. Bravo.

I feel dirty just reading about this.

Laura Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 06:37 PM EST

Test.

Fatima Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 06:24 PM EST

Wait? He's telling us how he would have killed his wife? As if he is some sort of expert? ARE THERE MORE THAN TWO MURDERS OJ?

Robin Freeman Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 06:21 PM EST

Oh. My. GOD!
I'm not gonna watch it or buy it.
Yuck-o-rama!

Hmm... Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 06:15 PM EST

I'll watch it, but won't buy the book! O.J.AIN'T GETTIN NONE OF MY MONEY! Fox can have my ratings, but whatever.

Will Holston Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 06:10 PM EST

This is just awful. That being said, you know I'm gonna watch.
