Snap judgment: Gwen Stefani's 'Wind It Up'

Oct 24, 2006, 03:55 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music

142542__gs_l Let's review. "Lonely Goatherd" yodeling? (I.) Combined with rubbery "Milkshake" bassline? (Don't.) And robotic rap-singing, minus "Hollaback" jaunt? (Think.) Plus vacuous shout-out to own clothing line? (So.) And yet no discernable melody? (Gwen.)

I repeat: I don't think so, Gwen. But if you don't want to take my word for it, click here and hear for yourself. Just don't say you weren't warned.

arwen Wed, Jan 10, 2007 at 04:17 AM EST

ok, i luv gwen and all her songs, but i saw her live, and when she sings they dubb her voice, she a F.A.K.E! i do enjoy her song wind it up, but i think she is trying way to hard to come up with something fresh - gwen, ur losing your touch.

Chris Fri, Dec 1, 2006 at 01:31 PM EST

I liked the song quite a bit, particularly the interludes with the polka music. It's basically enjoyable, but the video lacks a concept. Gwen looks like a little girl grown up who has the opportunity to play "dress up" as Julie Andrews. Is there a point? Or is it just eye candy? (Don't get me wrong -- it's very good candy!)

Savannah Tue, Nov 14, 2006 at 12:13 AM EST

i LUV gwen Stefani so dont get me wrong i like her music lots.
but her new song wind it up makes me think that her baby has made her go crazy.it doesnt have a bad beat to it but the yoldeling just ruins the hell outta it.
i hope she comes out wit much much much betterniss then wind it up in the future.
keep it original but not too much outta the box! lolz

Juliet Sat, Nov 11, 2006 at 01:02 AM EST

Wow, this is good. Took a while to grow on me, but I quite like it now.

Gwen's always an original, I'll tell you that. Alice in Wonderland, Harajuku, now the Sound of Music...she's like Madonna, except when she reinvents herself, it actually works.

Celestially high hopes for this album.

Kayla Fri, Nov 10, 2006 at 10:15 PM EST

One more thing anyone, who doesnt like Gwen's music should be in a mental institution!

Kayla Fri, Nov 10, 2006 at 10:13 PM EST

I think Gwen is sooooo awesome! She really knows how to think outside the box...this song kicks butt!I love it!

Craig Tue, Nov 7, 2006 at 08:15 PM EST

A truly miserable recording. If this is a prelude as to what is coming from round 2, I suggest everyone run for cover from the radio.

Foobitywoobitywah Wed, Nov 1, 2006 at 08:34 PM EST

i like it. it sounds like fergie because she (gwen) was hanging out with fergie a lot, because she toured with gwen.

Umph Tue, Oct 31, 2006 at 10:28 PM EST

Ahhhh i cant stand people not liking gwen!!
she has balls, noone else makes such huge risks like her, at least her songs (especially this one) are not like any other song around..i think this song is awesome

z Sun, Oct 29, 2006 at 05:58 PM EST

i don't like the robotic rap singing, but the parts with the lonely goatherd are pretty good and the only reason I've listened to it more than once. This will probably be the only bad single she releases from this album "hopefully".

aron Sat, Oct 28, 2006 at 12:06 PM EST

booooooooooooring and totally proof of someone really trying to too hard to be inventive.

beb Fri, Oct 27, 2006 at 07:22 PM EST

one more thing...

MH - Thank you for mentioning "Bring Me Edelweiss" - what a kick-ass song!

beb Fri, Oct 27, 2006 at 07:19 PM EST

I love this song. It reminds me so much of something Missy Elliott would do - something SO out there that it will click after people give it a few listens.

Jeremy!!!! I've missed you since the one-hit wonder tirade...Hope all is well. :-)

gweny Fri, Oct 27, 2006 at 10:49 AM EST

why are ppl saying she is lazy???? she has a clothing line, a baby, she going on tour next year which isnt easy at all,and a album! gwen is a hard worker! and this song was def made over a year ago! so she isnt copying anyone!

Taylor Fri, Oct 27, 2006 at 10:45 AM EST

I luv it! its different... every rap song sounds the same! and for u ppl who think it sounds like a fergie or kelsi song, wow nooo!!! this song is orignal and great! it makes me wanna dance! this next album will be awesome 12/5! gooo buy it!! the next album of the year!

Sonia Fri, Oct 27, 2006 at 12:44 AM EST

Sounds like something you would hear in Fantasyland at Disneyland. I really don't think that's a good thing though.

watchit Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 10:49 PM EST

Ewww. Disgusting, talk about making me sick.

Betty Boop Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 03:50 PM EST

Yuck! Hated it. She's trying so hard to be unique that it comes across as like she's trying TOO hard. Not catchy at all.

Ellipsian Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 02:13 PM EST

You probably could, Eric, you probably could.

But no one wants you to. So sit. And shhhh.

Ryan Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 01:46 PM EST

This one sounds like a big-time flop. Why the hell try to bring back Yoddling? Yoddling was never in and should not be tried to make "in". What is Gwen trying to do? Swiss up a techno-funk version of The Sound Of Music? Would imediately flip stations if I hear this play on the radio. Some unsmart music making here.

Amber Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 01:33 PM EST

I LOVE it...

Nick Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 12:49 PM EST

about 5 seconds near the end were interesting, but the rest sounded like Kevin Federline's female twin rapping. You can do better than this. TAKE 2.

dub Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 12:24 PM EST

love it. love everything about it.

roel Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 10:45 AM EST

wow. not nearly as bad as i thought it would be...
made me laugh though. and i do like a song that makes me laugh.
prefer her so much more in no doubt.

aramis Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 10:15 AM EST

Well I wasn't completely disturbed by it. At least not as much as that hot mess that was LL's and JLO's "Control Myself". Now THAT song really went nowhere after having such a promising beat.

Gwen's is a bit strange, but then again, that's just Gwen. She's hardly ever been conventional. I'm sure as much as we detest this song now, it will grow on us. Lest we forget though, that the first single off of "Love. Angel. Music. Baby." didn't really go anywhere either. The second single didn't go much farther than that. It was actually the THIRD single "Hollaback Girl" that actually elevated Gwen into a solo star. Meaning, don't put too much into the first single...

Joe C Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 08:03 AM EST

I prefer Gwen in No Doubt, but I will probably end up liking the song, as Gwen's tunes always win me over in the end.

Derek Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 07:49 AM EST

Worst. Song. Ever. It'll be #1 on the charts in about a month.

glittertwins Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 07:07 AM EST

Hideous! GS has created a new genre: anti-music.

Jen Wed, Oct 25, 2006 at 05:03 AM EST

yikes! ...but somehow, I think the kids are going to enjoy this. CRAZY KIDS!!!

Jeremy Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 11:23 PM EST

I saw her perform this live at her concert and it was saw HAWT that I almost fell out my chair!

jaime Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 10:10 PM EST

This was not bad, but where is the explosive dance-pop of "What You Waiting For"?

GT Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 09:40 PM EST

Wow. That's pretty awful. I expect so much better from Gwen. I don't have a problem with the yodeling, or the 'Sound Of Music' sample. That seems pretty consistent with something Gwen would do. But the utter lack of any melody, or any actual singing, is really disappointing. And lazy. I had heard that this album was basically made up of leftovers from her debut. If it wasn't good enough the first time, why bother now?

Heather Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 09:23 PM EST

Wheee! This song is great! I cannot wait to get my hands on this track and the album "Sweet Escape". Only an artist like Ms. Stefani could pull off yodeling in a pop song.

xoxox

aa Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 08:38 PM EST

terrible. i found myself watching the time and hoping that it would be over faster.

Slezak's Hag Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 07:52 PM EST

Eric, you are a poser.

Alex Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 07:42 PM EST

The difference between Gwen and Fergie making simple, cheesy pop songs is that Gwen has accomplished much greater things in her career to a point where she can put out a track like this just for the fun of it. As a for Fergie, it's the best she can do.

whatsonpop Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 07:17 PM EST

Are you kidding me??? I was at a friends house yesterday. A friend that has no moved into the ipod generation and we were forced to listen to radio. The only thing I like about the fact that they play the same 7 songs over and over in rotation was that Ms Gwen's new hyper fun track was one of them. Lighten up. Gwen, thank you for giving us an early christmas present. Wind it up!!!

Eric Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 06:58 PM EST

Can we get a new homosexual blogger on Popwatch please? Anyone? I could probably do it. For real.

Kat Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 06:25 PM EST

This song is fun and will have people dancing in the clubs just like all her other songs. Go Gwen!

mac Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 06:02 PM EST

this is the worst song in the history of pop music

fredric Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 05:47 PM EST

It's not great, but not terrible. Hopefully, though, the new CD has many better tracks.

MH Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 05:01 PM EST

The really awful thing is that the Sound of Music yodeling/rapping combo has actually been done before, and much better, in a song from the late 1980s, Edelweiss' "Bring me Edelweiss."

BJohnson Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 04:47 PM EST

Ehh I don't hate it with the fury that some of the bloggers have on here, nor do I love it. It's just a "Heard it before" type feeling with added yodeling. As far as the comparison with Fergielicious or however she spells it, that song just made me go download the original track, "Supersonic" by JJ Fad. I won't hate on Stacy too much since I found out that she was the younger sister on Kids Incorporated. She's been in the business awhile.

JenJen Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 04:41 PM EST

I feel like sampling has morphed into this big contest. The producers just want to find the weirdest, most random song to sample. The public will be like, "Omigod! I,like, totally know that song from when I was a little kid!". (See Rihanna's sample of Tainted Love as an example. Her vocals were crap but the public loved it. Everything likeable about that song was from the sample!) I think the vocals and lyrics on this Gwen song are LAME, but the novelty of the sample will probably keep on the radio way too long.

Stephanie Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 04:39 PM EST

Oh that's easy! Kirstin Dunst as Torrence in "Bring it On". The scene for bonus points was when she told off the two snobby cheerleaders who said no to Elisa Dusku during tryouts.

But I digress, Gwen was sooo much better during her punk/ska phase. I loved her live cover of Obla-De, Obla-Da. I am not a fan of "Don't Speak", it became over-played. Her new sound is just not cool, and Yodeling?! My German ancestors would be laughing thier butts off.

Rob Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 04:39 PM EST

Gretchen, the line's from "Bring It On."

But unfortunately, Gwen is the poo no longer. ;-)

Keechy Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 04:29 PM EST

I love it! This ish is gonna be bustin through all your radios soon enough... and you'll ALL know the lyrics and bounce to it even though you'll hate it. Come on.. admit it. It's better than Fergie's stuff.

Chris Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 04:29 PM EST

It's not a horrible song, but it is a little disappointing. It certainly is dance-able, but it also incredibly forgetable. Where's the hook? I'm enjoing the sampling/yodeling, but it's the most forgetable song she's ever recorded. Where's the crazy "What You Waiting For" beat when you need it?

dwight Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 04:29 PM EST

LOVES IT!!! The Lonely Goatherd is, oddly enough, my favorite Sound of Music song. I think this song is inventive, hysterical, and completely addictive.

Martha Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 04:28 PM EST

I'm with you, Michael. Eek. Sorry, yodel fans - any song that samples "Lonely Goatherd" is complete cheese whiz. By the way, does anyone else think the singing on the "Lonely Goatherd" part of the song sounds like Madonna circa 1998, when she was trying to show the world she could actually sing?

Gretchen Weiners Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:50 PM EST

I don't know Mike I think this one is going to grow on me. The yodeling is, of course, weird. I think I'll be able to get over it though because Gwen's the poo. So take a big whiff (name that movie!!!)

junior Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:50 PM EST

sorie, I meant that I know the song is completed and official, I just wish it wasn't. Another meeting with the producers and Gwen could have had an actual song on her hands.

(I'm actually listening to it again right now and there's a definite spot about a minute in when they could have added a chorus - they wouldn't even have to write anything, they could just chant "Wind It Up" or something - and Gwen decides, no I'd like to just talk some more...)

Lorenzo Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:49 PM EST

I grabbing my gun right now to shoot me myself so my brain doesn't have to suffer anymore to that f*cking song. The yodeling! Dear God, the yodeling!! Goodbye world!!! (BOOM!!!!!)

Lynny Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:45 PM EST

It is really odd. It's a kind of dissapointing, but I guess someone who has been this successful is always trying to push the envelope, but this is a bit far. Just pull back on the bizarro. I still love you, Gwen!

Meta Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:44 PM EST

Wow, can Gwen get over herself now and go back to the days of not being a self absorbed celeb. who's music sucks..... gwen... no duobt, give them a call!!

Mike Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:39 PM EST

gwen stefani kicks ass. she doesn't give a f**k what anyone thinks--who the hell else would yodel on a pop track!? she's an off-the-cusp trendsetter who just killed it yet again. go gwen!!!

mike Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:37 PM EST

No Doubt, Gwen, No Doubt.

jamal Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:36 PM EST

WTH? THIS SONG IS AMAZING! QUIT HATING U HATERZ!!

GOB Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:33 PM EST

This actually could have been an interesting song, but things turn ugly as soon as the drums kick in and completely overpower everything. I don't know who decided that shouting nonsense to a marching band beat qualifies as music, but this is the worst of the trend (Fergie is not far behind). Gwen can do so much better. I wish she would.

john Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:33 PM EST

JANK!

willdeezy Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:33 PM EST

WTF?!?!?! What was she thinking?

sara Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:33 PM EST

Junior, this song debuted on the radio monday. It is the first track off her new album, which means this is it. it is not a rough sample. there is no chorus. it won't get any better than this.

L3 Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:32 PM EST

My ears are bleeding! This is horrible. I sang "My Humps" right over it. I can enjoy pop for pop's sake--I am really digging on "Fergalicious" right now--but this is justa crime against humanity.

sara Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:31 PM EST

yeah, this is crap. I am really dissapointed. I had high hopes. Fergie is supposed to be ripping off Gwen, but her song "Fergalicious" ripped her off, and ran all the way out of town with it. It makes me sad that Fergie is better than Gwen now.

junior Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:29 PM EST

Michael, I think you're (strange) love of Fergie is clogging your brain. It wasn't that bad. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't good either but it's not as bad as you say. The string sample is used quite well and the yodelling is catchy. The problem is that it's the beginning of a song, not a completed song. Gwen, honey, you need a chorus and you don't have one yet. The beat is certainly not ready "for the clubs..."

Ben Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:28 PM EST

It is a pretty horrible song.

Ellipsian Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:25 PM EST

Anyone know how to remove the hot mess that song left in my ears? Ugh.

Dominique L. Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:16 PM EST

I remember when No Doubt were rock gods, thanks to their brilliant 'Tragic Kingdom' album. Those were the days.... (I will admit however that I'm digging the yodeling. But that's it.)

newtonsapple Tue, Oct 24, 2006 at 03:10 PM EST

ooh, any song that yodels the Lonely Goatherd is fine by me.

However, this song sucks.

I miss my youth and my wanting to be Gwen Stefani in her No Doubt days. Stupid solo careers.
