Prince at the Super Bowl -- touchdown or fumble?

Have you heard the amazing news? Cirque du Soleil will be the pregame show at Super Bowl XLI (pronounced "gigli"), and that Prince feller is doing the halftime.

Yes, you read that correctly. Prince. The Super Bowl. On CBS, home of the 2004 wardrobe malfunction. Not this Prince. This one. Remember him? Musical genius, shy exhibitionist, and sexual revolutionary? Has an album out, 3121? Okay, okay, it's that guy who sang on American Idol. Remember him, kids? Golly, who'd have thought the day would come when Prince was considered a "safe" alternative to Janet Jackson?

It makes a certain sort of sense actually. He and Beyonce subbed for Jackson at the Grammys after Boobgate.  But will he use this bully pulpit to shock or awe? He's one of our greatest live showmen, whose concert work is renowned for its pure musicianship -- little need for fireworks, stage effects, or gimmicks. The most controversial thing Prince could do would be to, well, just play good music.

Of course, Prince's participation is still officially a rumor -- as is the news that he'll partner with another act. (Are the Bangles busy?) But what are you thinking? Do you fear a Purple Bowl? Or are you, at this moment, doing a celebratory Batdance? Will Justin Timberlake rip off The Artist's poorly anchored crotch patch? Comment un2 your heart's content.

Outstanding performance as usual from this ICONIC Master. I`m just wondering as a musician myself and for others who might be on the same page, While it was pouring, How was it made that no one got ELECTRICUTED? The school where I come from still says water and electric are not fond of one another. Unless physics and technology have change greatly. Kudos goes out to the electrical engineers. Maybe recorded tracks..hmm

Peace

So I missed part of Prince's halftime show but what I saw was great! Can anyone tell me which songs he performed?

EJnBmore Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

Prince did the damn thing last night!!!The highlight was Purple Rain in the pouring rain, hello :o!!! I was in awe and so thoroughly satisfied..as always with our own American Prince...All hail!

Kathi Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

Prince's performance gave me the chills! He rocked the house. Loved the marching band too! Anyone else notice he was wearing Miami Dolphin colors -- he's such a genius!

Bravo! Prince! You showed everybody what a rock star is. Every bit better than any halftime show ever. And don't forget the Florida A&M Marching Band! On the field in the rain, lit up with neon-kickin' it good!
Two great black couches, Prince, and FM&M. I good day to be an African American.

Kat Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 01:56 AM EST

The halftime show was totally amazing - oh to be one of those wet fans down on the field!!

Dante Wolfe Mon, Feb 5, 2007 at 01:05 AM EST

That guy torn it up! That was by far the best energy and performance of any half time show to date.

JD Sun, Feb 4, 2007 at 08:50 PM EST

Plenty purple is right. That was one of the best half-time shows in a long time.

Patel Sun, Feb 4, 2007 at 08:28 PM EST

Well I just saw a lot of purple at his half time show. Guess people don't know what they are talking about

Theigh Fri, Jan 26, 2007 at 02:52 PM EST

Get real. Any true Prince fan knows he is no longer about purple. 3121 was a gospel album - kinda - as he is a Jehovas Witness now.

I wish I didn't live in Australia... I would be there in a heart beat if possible! It is going to rock! For Prince to have this kind of coverage in how long is amazing!! I never thought he would do something like this though.. especially that commercial.. I would say that would be a highlight in his caree.. But he's almost 50, still looks in his 20s asnd can still out perform any new and old talent of yesterday, today and tomorrow. All respect to the man that has made music what is today!
(Not including the commercial crap on the radio!)

Carmen Fri, Dec 15, 2006 at 07:02 PM EST

LOVE THAT COMMERCIAL!!!!! STILL LAUGHING AFTER PLAYING IT 50 TIMES!!!!

music_lover Mon, Dec 11, 2006 at 11:28 AM EST

YAY for a Prince performance at the Super Bowl!!!! I honestly don't care about any sort of could-be "scandal", and everyone NEEDS to put that damn 2004 "wardrobe malfunction" behind them already!!! All I know is that Prince is frickin AWESOME, and it's because of him that I can't wait for the Super Bowl!!!!!

Alison Greene Sun, Dec 10, 2006 at 04:21 PM EST

Just caught his Superbowl commerical. It is awesome!!!!!!! He is having a bad dream in a room full of executives then he is at the superbowl. Really funny! Check it out if you can find it on-line. you will crack up.

Prince played a song at sometime during the Washington Redskins/Buffalo Bills superbowl. Some of the Washington players and Buffalo Bills players were lip synching parts of the song. It was soooooo superb. Does anyone have this taped or available.....pleeeeeeease.

see4u Mon, Aug 14, 2006 at 08:47 PM EST

I HAVE BEEN A BIG PRINCE FAN SINCE HIS SOFT AND WET DAYS! I AM EXCITED THAT HE IS FINALLY GOING TO SHOW MILLIONS ON PEOPLE WHAT A TRUE MUSCIAL GENIUS HE REALLY IS. I'M NOT A FOOTBALL FAN.....BUT DAMN!!! IF I AM GOING TO MISS THIS ONE!!!

Thad Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 04:27 PM EST

WHOO HOO!! CAN'T WAIT.

Susan Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 02:56 PM EST

All male superbowl fans everywhere no need to worry...this show will rock! Prince is an artist and his show will reflect the occation! I can't wait for this!!!

Weep Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 02:33 PM EST

Prince agreeing to perform at the Super Bowl, in front of a salad bowl or naked in a pool of purple jello are all reasons to watch.

Prince is da isht and will very likely make for an explosive half time performance.

I have to disagree with the poster who said Prince doesn't always fare well with duets --- I thought his Grammy performance with Beyonce was awesome and I'm not even a huge B fan. Also, his new protege, Tamar sounds great with she sings with the purple one.

Prince rules --- that's all there is to it.

Stephanie Travitsky Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 02:08 PM EST

I like Prince, but that outfit looks as if he slaughtered a giraffe.

Ellipsian Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 01:13 PM EST

Wow--you really did just say, "Gigli". And my co-workers really did all just give me that, "Why is he randomly laughing out loud?!" look. Thanks, Scott.

Mel Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 11:57 AM EST

And then all across the land there is a collective sound of men changing the channel to watch the 'Lingerie Bowl.' Isn't this going to cause a bigger loss in revenue for the advertising companies?

Meka Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 10:21 AM EST

I was so excited when I heard he was gonna perform. I can't wait!! Long live the KING OF ALL MUSIC!! I will bow down!

Janet Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 09:48 AM EST

As a person who only tunes in to the Super Bowl for the commercials and half-time show, I say it would be a fantastic choice. I'd even watch some football just to make sure I didn't miss it!

Jordy Vee Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 09:02 AM EST

Prince isn't just a prince, he's the King Of King.....all bow down

Anna Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 08:15 AM EST

We've been back to calling him Prince for almost a decade.

Anyway Prince is a Jehovah's Witness so he's not going to do anything too raunchy. I went to see him on his last concert tour. He's changed a lot of his lyrics to fit in better with his newfound faith. He's a terrific performer (even better when it's just him and a guitar), so he could do very well. The only problem I see is if they have him duet with another performer. That rarely works well. See his duet with Beyonce for proof.

Catty Canuck Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 07:59 AM EST

Whoops - did I miss that we're back to calling him Prince again?

Gretchen Weiners Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 07:51 AM EST

Super Bowl gigli... I laughed out loud. Good work Brown.

Just Me Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 06:56 AM EST

Thanks for the musician stories, this is great! I believe Prince is very talented. It seems as if time has not touched him. He can sure play that guitar. Rock on Prince!

PrinceFanFromWayBack Tue, Aug 8, 2006 at 06:50 AM EST

Prince is the greatest musical artist of all time. We should feel honored to have him show up at a football game and play. I'm so glad he's out and about again.

matt Mon, Aug 7, 2006 at 11:14 PM EST

Prince rocks, I'm looking forward to it.

Rebecca B. Mon, Aug 7, 2006 at 10:30 PM EST

As long as it's better than this year's suckfest, more power to him. Let it rain purple everywhere!
