Justin vs. Taylor: The inevitable apology

Aug 18, 2006, 06:41 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: 'American Idol'

16330__jt_l_1 Is it time to tell the Soul Patrol to stand down? Justin Timberlake is (Sexy)back-tracking on his earlier trash-talking about Taylor Hicks. Actually, it's sort of a non-apology apology, with JT's publicist telling the Associated Press that the singer's remarks ''were taken completely out of context.'' Hmm, I didn't realize there was a context in which ''He can't carry a tune in a bucket'' doesn't come off as an insult.

Maybe the ''out of context'' part referred to Timberlake's remarks about the difficulties of sudden fame: ''If he has any skeletons whatsoever; if, God forbid, he's gay, and all these people in Mississippi who voted for him are like, 'Oh, my God, I voted for a queer!' It's just too much pressure.'' I'll buy that he wasn't actually trying to imply that Taylor is gay or has other skeletons; he just said it in a clumsy way that should have riled not only Hicks but the entire state of Mississippi.

To his credit, Hicks himself has kept admirably silent about the whole affair. Still, someone must have pressured Timberlake into damage-control mode. Is the lesson here that you shouldn't risk the wrath of the Soul Patrol, or that people who live in crass houses shouldn't throw stones?

Pick a side, people: Team Soul Patrol or Team SexyBack?

tammy Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 08:43 PM EST

maybe its just that justin is scared Taylor out does him in cd's. face it justin u suck. You dissing taylor being gay. didn't he have a ex band memeber that was gay? then again justin could be gay also. he does dance like a chic.

Megan Midgette Wed, Sep 13, 2006 at 07:41 AM EST

Justin is a losah face. His music is...ok TAYLOR IS TOTALY BETTER THOUGH!

Sandy Tue, Sep 12, 2006 at 01:13 PM EST

Justin before you go calling someone else a fag, you should look in the mirror.

Taylor will out sell you in records anyday because his I will buy, yours I don't even look once at.

GO SOUL PATROL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Juju Tue, Sep 5, 2006 at 12:56 AM EST

I just finished watching Justin's lousy video. He has been hanging out with Janet Jackson for too long. His dance moves were stiff and his voice would have gotten him two thumbs down from Simon Cowell. He really should just keep his mouth shut.

Zak Wed, Aug 30, 2006 at 04:46 PM EST

Justin is a FAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Judy Sun, Aug 27, 2006 at 10:48 AM EST

Picture this,a year from now Taylor is headlining and JT is begging to open for him.JT was way out of line with his remarks and can't undo the damage he has invoked upon himself.JT's music is for the moment,Taylor's will be timeless. Talent will speak for itself and Taylor will be the one left standing.JT will be a memory.

megan midgette Sat, Aug 26, 2006 at 11:34 PM EST

TEAM SOUL PATROL! JUSTIN GO SUCK ON BALLS QUEER BAG!!!!!!!!! GET A LIFE AND DON'T INSULT PEOPLE WHO ARE, CLEARLY, MORE TALENTED THAN YOU! I MEAN, IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH TALENT TO SING LIKE A GIRL! SOUL PATROL IS OUT TO GET YA! WATCH OUT, ASSWHIPE, CAUSE TAYLOR HICKS IS BRINGIN SEXY BACK!!!ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Judy Thu, Aug 24, 2006 at 05:02 PM EST

Soul Patrol!!!!! A publicity stunt on Justins part to coincide with the release of his CD.The sad part is that there is a vast audience who approve of this kind of bashing. An opinion is one thing but these remarks were uncalled for.Iam very dissapointed in Justin,as are many.I may be just one fan but am now one less fan of Justins.

laughingatjustin Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 08:37 PM EST

Makes me wonder when Justin will be coming out of the closet. He's sending out feelers.

sam Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 06:46 PM EST

WHAT???????????////

Cindy Wed, Aug 23, 2006 at 09:21 AM EST

Not that I think it was particularly polite of Justin Timberlake to make the remarks, but I'd have to say I agree. I just don't see any worthy talent within Taylor Hicks.

Jen Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 08:57 AM EST

It is not only Justin who needs to say he is sorry. K Fed needs to apologize for his excruciating performance. Maybe he and Justin will become Best friends.

Herky Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 07:24 PM EST

Justin jus wants publicity. Everyone is so over him.

pkteacher Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 05:21 PM EST

Justin must be a very insecure person to say such inappropriate things about Taylor Hicks. I am sure they don't share the same fan base in music- so Justin does not need to worry about Taylor stealing his fans.

Justin isn't it time to grow up a little?

jay Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 04:25 PM EST

Team Soul Patrol!
Taylor showed a lot of class by not stooping down to JT's immature behaviour.

Scarlett Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 03:42 PM EST

Team Soul Patrol all the way. Limber Timber is a joke!

sally Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 03:26 PM EST

dust my friends... that's what Mr. Timberlake will be choking on... Taylor Hicks dust.... as he FLYS by him... in a swooping glory of success...

musiclover Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 03:19 PM EST

Finally someone (Chesnut) has said something that has made a lot of sense, mentioning how rappers dis others before releasing a new album. It is such a shame how the young generation will not have positive influences from their favorite celebrities.

nunayobidness Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 02:35 PM EST

This JT kid used to be in a boy band or something, right? Well, who ever he is, he's ill advised to be taking on serious musicians of any stature, let alone Mr. Hicks!

abby Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 01:10 PM EST

Justin is a child. Taylor is a man. They are both talented. IMHO Taylor is just as talented as Justin, vocally superior that is for sure. Why Justin picked this fight is beyond me. But then children often do stuff that is incomprehensible. This is one of those times.

Ep sato Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 12:10 PM EST

Sus-

The answer to your question is that only anonymous and self rigtheous misanthropes (like me) are allowed to bash celebrities because no one cares about what we say.

However, those who have cameras on them 24-7 clearly need to have a publicist with them at all times or need to watch what they say. Maybe we can rig up some sort of pocket sized gizmo that instantly spins anything stupid a celeb says during a public appearance? But then, what would we talk about instead of working?

nd Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 11:57 AM EST

Some of you people need to take a reading comprehension class. JT's statement is not homophobic. (It may be judgemental relative to Mississippians, but not homosexuals...but I digress). Its obviously a reference to the backlash that resulted from all the crazy "Claymates" after the stories came out about Clay Aiken being gay and most likley also to the fact that his friend and bandmate, Lance Bass, couldn't even come out of the closet during their heydey because of a fear of fan backlash! But I'm sure that's been referenced already in previous comments. I like "SexyBack" - but only since it was featured on So You Think You Can Dance. That routine was hot. Other that...move on.

Dana Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 11:26 AM EST

I'm siding with Closet Case Timberlake on this one. Just because he's gonna need all the support he needs, once he comes out of that gangsta wannabe closet of his. Come on, we've all seen the Little Boy Pageants, the disney show and that fierce double snap with arching back of yours Timbalake... and you know you are FLAMING!

Nancy Walker Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 09:12 AM EST

Chestnut:
I am laughing as I write this post! You are so right. Justin is not so stupid afterall. He knows who to pick on. He needs to quit his so-called ganster act, because it does not work. We all know he does not have real "credentials."

Chesnut Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 09:04 AM EST

This is just more of Justin's campaign to be black. All the high profile rappers dis their enemies right before the release date of their new albums. So Justin needs a feud, but he's a coward...he decides to pick on TAYLOR HICKS?? You won't ever see Justin criticize Eminem or Jay-Z or anyone else that could kick his ass. And besides...Justin competed in LITTLE BOY BEAUTY PAGEANTS when he was young. Case closed.

kelly Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 07:56 AM EST

Soul Patrol, no question, no doubt, no justin

arnold Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 07:55 AM EST

Not that I'm really a fan of either, but I find Justin's comments amusing since, to me, he has always sounded like a little kid singing while pinching his nose closed.

Brad Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 07:47 AM EST

I think they should both go away.

Jim Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 07:37 AM EST

I'm not particu;larly fans of either, but Justin's becoming the new king of inappropriate public statements. First came the recent interviews about his apparent (and unapologetic) drug use and now this.

Nancy Walker Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 12:39 AM EST

Justin should just tell the truth. He is just upset that Idol was not around when he was breaking into show business. He probably wanted to be a solo artist instead of being part of a boy-band. Well, at least he has become famous for his multiple love affairs, and clothes tearing fiasco.

Ann Mon, Aug 21, 2006 at 12:03 AM EST

I've got news for Team Soul Patrol. The Team SexyBack devotees I know DON'T CARE about this nonissue. Justin said something mean about the American Idol dude. So what. Move along, people. Taylor and his fans need thicker skins if they are going to survive in the music business. Nobody knows that better than Timberlake fans. (FutureSex/LoveSounds coming Sept. 12!)

DogDoc Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 11:01 PM EST

I've seen Ford mentioned many times in the comments. Good going Taylor!! More Ford advertising!! Team Soul Patrol got your sexy back Taylor!

Jennie Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 06:39 PM EST

Justin was just kidding, right? No way should one musician (wannabe or not, Justin) criticize another. Leave him alone, let him sing. Good for you, Taylor, for being quiet (except, hopefully, for your singing). By the way, JT, have you ever SEEN a bucket? That's really a hurtful, hateful thing to say.

marte Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 05:37 PM EST

Taylor Hicks. Glad I finally know the guys name. Poor guy, he JUST DOESN"T HAVE IT! If he wags his finger one more time like a third grade teacher during those stupid Ford commercials I think, I'll scream! Can't stand American Idol, a true illustation of how absolutely sad we Americans have become and about as intelligent as the president. Fords marketing department needs to work on their gas-guzzling-clunker cars and trucks, not dumbing down more Americans!

Tracy Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 05:08 PM EST

Team Soul Patrol. Justin Timberlake has a "steel set" to trash Mr. Taylor Hicks. To what end? As was already stated, jealousy? Threatened? Move on JT, your star is fading. The only time I liked the song Sexy Back was in the You Tube montage showing all of Taylor's sexy moves with JT's song playing as background. Little boy, Taylor is all man and all class.

bcath Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 03:58 PM EST

Taylor is way more interesting and exciting than Justin can ever hope to be.

cj Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 03:21 PM EST

It would have never occurred to me that JT would feel threatened by Taylor Hicks new found fame, but that is probably the only reason why he chose to so gratuitiously insult the latest "American Idol". In my book JT is as close as he can be, to a "has been"... And if you are truly sorry, JT, next time, think before you open your ugly mouth.

samp Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 12:38 PM EST

oh my god WHO CARES??!! i can pretty much guarantee that taylor hicks doesnt...cant anyone say anything anymore withough having to apologize? JT is allowed to an opinion people! sexyback rocks by the way, fun song!

Lene Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 11:50 AM EST

Whether I like JT's music better than that of TH or vice versa really has nothing nothing to do with this. However, JT shows an appalling lack of class, appearing to confuse "coolness" with "being a brat". Insulting other musicians really doesn't add anything to your image, except for perhaps "desperate bid for headlines".

Laurie Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 11:37 AM EST

First, the people talking about not seeing the Ford commercial any more - it was a July (end of the year campaign) ad only. They ran it for one month, and it isn't Taylor's fault, it was on so much. Also, it was just published that Ford's sales since the July ad campaign have increased 23%. The decrease was for the previous month's (before Taylor) sales.

Obviously, they are trying to do major damage control on Timberlake's behalf. Between the stories regarding his drug "theories" and use, and his bashing of Kanye, Lindsey Lohan, and Taylor, Justin is totally out of control. He has personal issues of magnanimous proportions to deal with. Taylor was staying in character, when he didn't respond in the press to JT's remarks. He's a classy guy. It's the ""Soul Patrol" team all the way!

Juju Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 10:51 AM EST

To:You all suck, and Sara
No way does Justin Timberfake look like Ace young-only in your dreams. And You all suck, get a life! Shut your silly mug!

sarah Sun, Aug 20, 2006 at 09:46 AM EST

Justin's comment, though a fact, was in such poor taste. I really don't like Taylor, but Justin was in a freakin' boy band!!!!!! Who the hell does he think he is? He might as well have been on American Idol alongside his mini me Ace Young.

Sunshine Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 11:36 PM EST

Better Hicks than fiddle-McGee.

TRUTH Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 10:52 PM EST

TAYLOR CAN'T SING TAHT IS SO TRUE NEVER SHOULD HAVE WON AI - POOR IMMITATION OF RAY CHARLES AND MICHAEL MCDONALD. JUSTIN CAN'T SING EITHER AND WAS A LOSER FOR RIPPING JANET'S TOP AND THEN LETTING HER TAKE ALL THE BLAME - THEN AGAIN, THAT WAS THE MEDIA'S FAULT FOR NOT HOLDING HIM ACCOUNTABLE, BUT INSTEAD BLAMING JANET BECAUSE IT EASIER TO KICK A JACKSON. THE MEDIA: RADIO, TV & PRINT ALL SUCK

Karikata Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 10:40 PM EST

This is kinda off the subject but I'm sick and tired of what you call "artists" dissing anybody coming out of AI. Hello, didnt Justin, Britney, Christina, Beyonce, and anybody who is famous today at one point participated in Star Search, the idol of its day. Im sure if a show like AI was around during their time, they would be on it in a heartbeat. Give the AI kids some credit: its a lot harder taking &^%$ from Simon than "you get 3 and a quarter stars" from smiling judges . It takes balls to do a show like that. Just because you were signed the old fashion way doesnt make you any better or "hungrier" for the music. The AI participants didnt have rich little mommies and daddies supporting their careers. That's my peace. p.s.: yeah I hate those Ford commercials too. lol.

You all suck Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 09:58 PM EST

All of you are judgemental assh0les. You're all talking smack about Justin doing it and then turning around and doing it yourselves. Hypocrites!!

JustinTries2Hard Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 08:33 PM EST

Good move when you have an album coming out. Way to gain attention. He's also trying too hard to shed his old pop bubblegum image. The drug claims and other wild behavior. All this coming from a 25 yr old acting like he's 12.

I could care less about Hicks but spare us, Mr. Timberlake. Hicks deserves just as much pop-machine opportunities as Mr. Mickey Mouse Club Boy Band, himself.

Herbert Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 08:22 PM EST

Justin is SO gay. We made love last nite!

Taylor #1 Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 04:34 PM EST

TEAM SOUL PATROL!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

lance Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 01:54 PM EST

Justin's an idiot... and a COKEHEAD. He was probably high when he said it.

Nancy Walker Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 01:07 PM EST

Justin is a bonafide jerk! This is not about his fear of homosexuals. This is about his idiotic comments. The former Mickey boy has alot of nerve critizing someone for entering a talent show when he is the king of talent show auditions.

mv Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 12:49 PM EST

to the people who keep insisting his comments were homophobic- um, no. i think you missed his point. he was trying to insinuate that if taylor was gay that his southern-conservative backing from Mississippi would be outraged! THAT'S the stupid point he was trying to make. he's not homophobic but basically he is judgemental in trying to say everyone in MS is narrow minded and bigoted and that is why Gary Susman makes the comment above that this comment should've riled not only Hicks but all of MS.

So can people quit it with the homophobic rants?

I'm on team taylor only because i like them both but just found JT's diss unnecessary.

Nori Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 12:15 PM EST

Team Sexyback!

Mia Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 11:55 AM EST

Although I would have to agree that I do have a hard time finding any worthy talent within Taylor Hicks ...the comments were just uneccessary and rude. Since when does starting out on the Mickey Mouse club trump starting out on American Idol? Watch you mouth Justin, you aren't that untouchable.

Everlyse Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 11:22 AM EST

Parents DO buy cars for their sixteen year-olds, however. Team Soul Patrol.

Roy Stephens Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 10:51 AM EST

Very poor taste, Justin!! Is Justin gay himself, I was watching Punked with Ashton Kutcher (one of the August 18 shows that aired) the other day, Ashton made a comment about loving Justin Timberlake, are they a team?

Saush Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 10:48 AM EST

I would like to remind JT that I'm very certain there were plenty of people throwing out the "can't carry a tune in a bucket" rhetoric his way during his N'Sync days. As Josh indicated, I don't know why these celebs feel the snobbish need to be taken WAY TOO SERIOUSLY by trashing on those doing exactly the same thing that he's doing. Although I'm not a huge Taylor fan, he's got what JT lost several years ago.. and that's heart and love for what he does. It's now all about the sex for Justin and countless of other artists. I don't need that rubbed in my face, thank you!

Josh Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 09:39 AM EST

Justin is trying way too hard to fit in. Didn't he start out in the Mickey Mouse Club? He wants cred bad and it shows. Knocking other artists is desperation in my book. Be real, put the CD out there, if it's good, it will sell on it's own merit. How much money is wasted on all this PR for these people? Taylor is annoying. Again, when his CD comes out, it will sink or swim. Music is subjective, I won't be buying either.

Kevin Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 07:20 AM EST

1st he slams Kanye now Taylor Hicks? That is soo random. Isn't this the same stunt campaign Christina Aguilera used when she started insulting everyone from Beyonce to Mariah Carey thinking that people would think her comments where clever?

Liandre Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 06:22 AM EST

The Hoff 2D Max said:"while Hacks...er, Hicks...certainly DOESN'T have any talent/staying power (they've already pretty much phased him out of those Ford ads...and as bad as he sounded in them,it DOES explain Ford's sales plummet lately),"

Here, I've been blaming Kelly Clarkson's silly Bold Moves/Go campaign for Ford's downfall. I hope they didn't pay her too much because they wasted their money. Twelve year olds don't buy cars.

T&A Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 03:03 AM EST

I took Justin's initial insults to be the opening big in a quest to be the agressive top in a relationship with Taylor Hicks. Since Taylor didn't respond due to a total lack of interest in Justin's come-on....a new offense was clearly required. Hence, Justin's publicist mentioned that the all the quotes were "taken out of context", which translates to, "OK Taylor, Its me Justin....I'll totally be your bottom any hour of any day or night that you want me to bend over."

Chels Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 02:20 AM EST

team SexyBack!! i never liked this taylor character...and i agree with what JT said...

Joy Sat, Aug 19, 2006 at 12:06 AM EST

What would make Justin be so random as to slam Taylor Hicks anyway?? He either:

1.) knows that using Taylor Hicks' name will get him noticed (score one for Taylor then being the bigger star and JT the name dropper)

2.) Cameron has a crush on Taylor and JT is jealous.

3.) Lance has a crush on Taylor and JT is jealous!!!!

Kris Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 11:44 PM EST

Justin needs to close his mouth. Can we say damage control? Every article I read he is trying SO hard for this "cool"image. It ain't working, it's just making him look dumb. And bringing the sexy back? Oh Please, don't make me laugh!

I can't stand Taylor.

So Team Sexy-back or Team Soul Patrol? How bout neither.

Angela Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 11:31 PM EST

I like Justin's music, but the only reason he is apologizing is to hold on to his public. Taylor Hicks is definitely the classier, more honorable man.

jon Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 11:25 PM EST

I just realized that I don't care about this anymore. My Timberfake hate is a constant and I don't really care for the Soul Patrol guy. He's like a young Michael McDonald and I like Michael McDonald. Can I be on Team Sweet Freedom?

[Shine sweet freedom, shine your light on me. You are the magic. You're riiiight where I wannna be!]

sam Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 11:22 PM EST

Justin didn't mean it when he ripped off Janet Jackson's top, either. Guess that was taken out of context. Not only is this guy apparently homophobic, he is also totally unable to take the heat for the stupid things that he says and does. If we have to rely on this loser to bring sexy back, we are in big trouble.

Jessica Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 11:19 PM EST

The main issue here is that Justin Timberlake is HOMEPHOBIC! I'm banning his music!

The Hoff 2D Max Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 10:50 PM EST

I smell a 2007 Grammy hookup, a la Eminem and Elton John a few years back!
But seriously, while Hacks...er, Hicks...certainly DOESN'T have any talent/staying power (they've already pretty much phased him out of those Ford ads...and as bad as he sounded in them,it DOES explain Ford's sales plummet lately), to have a one-trick pony like Timerlake actually SAY it reeks of a "pot-calling-the-kettle-
black" type of moment.

Mel Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 10:49 PM EST

TEAM SOUL PATROL

...without question

Zink Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 10:27 PM EST

Team SexyBack, i hate taylor hicks with an angry passion! i agree with everything JT said, Taylor hicks makes me want to puke whenever he sings

Rebecca B. Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 10:18 PM EST

Team Whichever One Doesn't Do Another Effing Ford Commercial.

newbie Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 08:30 PM EST

I still vote for a Dance-Off!

Orlando Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 08:02 PM EST

Who cares! I kinda liked SexyBack, but Justin's remarks have made me rethink buying future songs. I don't even watch 'American Idol' anymore, but his comments where just plain wrong. So Justin, come foward and apologize!

Dana Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 07:44 PM EST

definetely team soul patrol. Justin's whinning is just masking the pain of already being a has been.

Just Me Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 06:56 PM EST

Please, Spare me!
Justin thought that his comments would be well received, but they started a roaring fire. Sure he is sorry. I will believe his pathetic apology when pigs fly.

ger Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 06:46 PM EST

Team 'Get the f#@% away from me, both of you'.

brittney Fri, Aug 18, 2006 at 06:12 PM EST
