Slezak and Aunt Sassy vent their Emmy rage

Jul 6, 2006, 06:31 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Emmys

132225__comeback_l So yeah, I've spent the day working through Emmy rage issues. No Lost for best drama? No Jessica Walter? No Eva Longoria? No John Krasinski or Donald Faison or Lauren Ambrose? But yet (urgh) Charlie Sheen, Alfre Woodard (for that role?), and Stockard Frickin' Channing? For Out of Practice?! Gah!

Okay, deep breaths. Deep. Breaths. Focus on the positives. Like Lisa Kudrow (pictured) finally getting the respect that she's entitled to for her deeply nuanced turn as Valerie Cherish in The Comeback. Ah, yes, The Comeback, my favorite show... that got canceled by HBO! Um, er, RAGE!

No, no, no. Happy place. Happy. Place. I know. Let's channel our feelings through the Valerie Cherish audio clips provided by the wonderful folks at Save Valerie Cherish. Here we go...

-I'm having fantasies of Valerie Lisa Kudrow hitting the Emmy red carpet with this line.

-Hearing Frances Conroy's name get announced in the Best Actress in a Drama category for the dearly departed Six Feet Under makes me want to shout the following sentiment.

-Really? No major nods for Battlestar Galactica? Where's the love?

-Someone's bound to say something like this when My Name Is Earl's Jaime Pressly upgrades from trollop drag to designer duds for the Emmy ceremony.

-At last, Will Arnett gets himself a nomination for Arrested Development! Won't you join me on a celebratory ditty?

-And finally, this jaunty catchphrase pretty much sums up my feelings regarding the inclusion of jank choices like Debra Messing, Jane Kaczmarek, Geena Davis, and William Shatner.

Can I get a what-what?

Thrilled about Frances Conroy, Jaime Pressley, Lisa Kudrow, Elizabeth Perkins and finally Chris Meloni.
But really no Lauren Ambrose or Mary Louise Parker. That is just outrageous.

wiccawoman Mon, Jul 10, 2006 at 09:03 AM EST

I've said it before, I'm saying it again: Bring back the ACE awards! Comedy's better. Drama's better. I agree w/Annie--they did get some of the nom's right

Nancy Sun, Jul 9, 2006 at 08:35 PM EST

What bugged me was that Jason Lee and Ethan Supplee weren't nominated for My Name is Earl, or that Neil Patrick Harris wasn't nominated for How I Met Your Mother. No offense to Kevin James, because I like him and his show, but why did he get a nomination seven years after his show started? I don't get that. And I really don't get why Julia Louis-Dreyfus got a nomination for a show that was a mid-season replacement. Was it because she proved there is no Seinfeld curse? Because I can't think of another reason why she was nominated. Her show was funny, but it wasn't that funny. Jessica Walter deserved a nomination more. And Stockard Channing for that horrible show??? Now I'm really getting worked up. She's usually excellent in whatever she does, but she wasn't in Out of Practice. The only actor I liked in that show was the guy who played the older brother. I can't remember his name, but I thought he was very funny and talented. No wonder he wasn't nominated.

Paul Sat, Jul 8, 2006 at 07:09 AM EST

Josh, Thanks for putting me straight on Deadwood. I was thinking of the second season and forgot that it was more or less ignored last year.

For all the faults with the Emmy nominations, be thankful it hasn't even come close to the idiocy of the BAFTAs (here in the UK) where Doctor Who was the 'big thing' that everyone decided had to be lauded. Good grief.

Danielle Sat, Jul 8, 2006 at 06:00 AM EST

No Hugh Laurie, No "Veronica Mars", no acting noms for "Scrubs", only technical noms for "How I Met Your Mother"... ahh, Emmys, what little relevance you had is surely draining away quickly.

Joyce N. Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 10:05 PM EST

I was a West Wing fan to the very end and can't believe that Alan Alda (great actor that he is) who played what amounted to a bit part this past season could be nominated over Jimmy Smits who was in every episode and made their final season memorable. The Emmy's suck!

Observant Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 06:06 PM EST

Am I the only one who noticed that Trapped in the Closet episode of SouthPark was nominated??? There is justice in this world for some....

Heather Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 04:52 PM EST

That was supposed to say twelve but my 1 and 2 disappeared!!

Heather Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 04:51 PM EST

I think a big problem is that once a show gets canned, so many people want it back but the real question is that- will it still be as good as you think it is? Can it live up to the hype? I think a lot of the newer British series have it right- keep it to under episodes and keep it fresh and thought-provoking. A lot of the most brilliant series there only run a season or 2, some not that long (The Office anyone??). Maybe The Comeback should "comeback" but will you still be as enamoured with it if it does and it's not as good? Probably not. It's best to let these things go. I had to get over losing Invasion (and no noms for a brilliant cast there) that had ZERO resolution in it's finale so it's okay to say goodbye to your shows and let them go in peace. As for the Emmy nominations- what crap. What udder crap. Ugh.

Annie Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 04:34 PM EST

Lauren Graham was robbed, yes, and Arrested Development should have picked up more nominations (Buster is pretty much one of the best characters ever). But I'd like to focus on how right the Academy was in the catagory for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie. Judy Davis, Helen Mirren, Kathy Bates, Annette Benning, and Gillian Anderson (one of the most underrated actresses of her generation, if you ask me) make for a ridiculously high talented catagory. The Emmys may have gotten a lot wrong, but they got this catagory so right.

Carli Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 04:14 PM EST

I miss this show so dang much!

Dave Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 02:33 PM EST

Thank you, Emmy, for the 24, West Wing, Grey's Anatomy, Arrested Development, and Curb Your Enthusiasm nominations! But where the heck were Lost, Desperate Housewives, Gilmore Girls, Everwood, the rest of the cast of AD, the casts of Scrubs and Sopranos, Mary Louise Parker...

Craig G. Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 02:24 PM EST

As much as the emmy noms were off the wall and weird (Alfre Woodard? No Mary Louise Parker? No Lost or Rescue Me for best drama?) I was soooooooooo excited to see Lisa Kudrow nominated....brilliant show that NEEDS to return...or perhaps it was a perfect 13 episode capsule, and it's run it's course? Either way, I hope this gets others to experience Valerie Cherish in all her glory

pooperscooper Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 02:18 PM EST

I am so over the nominations of ANY award ceremony anymore. Glad to see Christopher Meloni simply because he is often wrongly ignored. Does that mean he should be in there, not so sure, but it's a change.
NO KRISTEN BELL?? SO EFFIN WRONG!
Should have been more AD.
Chandra Wilson...YEAH!
No Jessica Walter.....BOOOO!!!
Jamie Pressley...YEAH!
Sandra Oh....YEAH! but predictable.
No T.R. Knight...BOOOO!
I can't go on...I am too depressed over Veronica Mars. Something is really wrong when reality shows can receive 5 nominations and VM can't get one.

jmg Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 01:57 PM EST

I think there should be a limit to how many times an actor/actress can be nominated or win. Tony Shaloub again? Allison Janney again? Reminds me of Kelsey Grammar or Helen Hunt. These roles are old. Plus, amazing that Julia L-D is nominated when her show just started in January! How could she possibly have laughed your pants off that quick? Give credit where credit is due.

Tiff Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 12:00 PM EST

THANK YOU HOWARD!!!!!!
I thought I was the only one that hated both The Comeback and Lucky. HBO needs a new show. Any new show would be fine, as long as it's not those two.

Oh and Lauren Graham not getting an Emmy nomination is bullsh*t. She deserves it more than anyone else.

Josh Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 11:30 AM EST

Regarding Deadwood, that series was ineligble this year because of its timetable, with too much time passing between the previous season (which went with last year's awards) and this season (which will be eligible for next season's awards). Hopefully the kinks get worked out of this system by then so it, 'BSG,' Kristen Bell, Lauren Graham, 'Everybody Hates Chris,' the cast of 'Scrubs,' et al stand a chance.

Judy D Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 11:24 AM EST

Looks like the Emmy nomination committee took Mama's advise to play it safe in life! WHERE IN THE WORLD IS THE LOVE FOR LAUREN GRAHAM'S LORELAI GILMORE??? At least the leading actess catagory isn't full of DESPERATE nominees!

Shelly Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 11:20 AM EST

John Krasinski got robbed. But I'll be okay since Will Arnet made it in there. I don't understand how Jessica Walter was completely ignored. I wonder if any of the Emmy voters are thinking, "I've made a huge mistake"

Joe C Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 10:55 AM EST

I'm with ya, Michael; where's the love for Lauren Graham? I've been watching TV for, ahem, a long while, and I have NEVER seen anyone play a character betterthan she plays Lorelai Gilmore. Next year?

Paul Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 10:47 AM EST

HBO gets 95 nominations and not one of them is for Deadwood. Huh? What the hell happened there?

And no nomination for Hugh Laurie?

And nothing for Battlestar Galactica other than a few technical noms?

Crazy. Messed up. World

eb Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 10:36 AM EST

FORREST FRICKIN' WHITTAKER!!!!!!!

Howard Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 09:32 AM EST

I'll get my rant on later as far as how the nominations this year are even worse with the new system than in years past, but I have to get this out of the way right now - THE COMEBACK SUCKED. I gave it three chances, and I may have laughed once in three weeks. Lisa Kudrow was as annoying on this as she was at the nadir of Friends, and since she helped create the show, she has no one to blame. The only thing worse than that is "Lucky Louie".

Vicky Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 09:12 AM EST

I wish we could just all say "Redo!!" and they would do the whole nomination process over. Maybe then people who deserve nominations will get them. I mean Charlie Sheen??? Two and Half Men??? It's like Everybody Loves Ramond wasn't on anymore so they had to replace it with something else. Lame as hell!

Miles Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 09:01 AM EST

I wish I had something to rant about. Mr. Slezak is giving the Emmys undue weight by ranting. I do like some of the actors that are nominated, and I don't like some others. But is anyone really snubbed by an awards show that is largely irrelevant. Does anyone really remember who wins emmy's? without having too look it up of course? I congratulate all the nominees. But really, don't let it go to your head. A nomination and a win mean pretty much nothing. An Emmy is like a cracker jack box prize. It's cool that they have them in the box, but you end up not caring about it five minutes later. But hey, some of the nominees may get a chance at the little naked golden guy known as Oscar, and now, that would be pretty nifty.

Heather Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 08:53 AM EST

If I had it MY way - every member of the Arrested Development and The Office casts would be nominated- but once again, the old and the lame will always win out. KEVIN JAMES?? for playing HIMSELF? CHARLIE SHEEN? JON CRYER? Who watches that show? Frickin' Malcolm in the Middle dad, again! While Buster, Tobias, Michael and George Bluth get nothing?!?! And how about a guest appearance nom for Oscar winner Charlize Theron? Her “Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman" laugh ALONE made me laugh harder than all 25 seasons of the effing King of Queens. I swear Stockard Channing could sit and twitch on her next TV show and they would still nominate her. While the brilliant Jessica Walters, nada. Nothing for Rainn Wilson!! My god. Besides all this bitterness- I am ultimately enraged that my boyfriend, John Krasinski got the shaft after the heartbreaking “I’m in love with you” season finale of The Office. What 30 minute comedy makes you laugh and then cry and then scream all in one episode- all for one character? Again, all he has to do it look at the camera, and I laugh harder than at EVERY episode of Two and a Half Men ever produced (of which I’ve watched a total of 2 ½)

Maybe the new rule next year is an age limit. Like, over 65? NO VOTE. You knew Johnny Carson? NO VOTE. You partied at Studio 54? NO VOTE. Maybe then the younger, newer, actually funny shows will get the nominations they deserve.

One happy note- YAY for Peter Krause – FINALLY!!

Soapbox, OFF.

Josh Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 08:51 AM EST

It seems to be me that the committee need to watch like, five shows, not just one, in order to more effectively pick who had the best work all season. This new system also seemed to royally snub dramedies, thus no Marcia Cross, etc. I hate to suggest another award, but maybe it is time for a dramedy category that could host the likes of 'Desperate Housewives,' 'Monk,' 'Gilmore Girls,' 'Veronica Mars,' etc. etc.

Keith Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 08:35 AM EST

MK. Thank you so much for ValerieCherish.com I LOVE IT! I hope it's alright, but I downloaded your audio clips to my phone and now my ringer is..."Note to self: After a long day of work....I don't need to see that!" I also signed the petition. Did you see Lisa Kudrow's comments on USAtoday.com? She said the there is a possibility that she's not done with the character of Valerie Cherish!

Nick Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 08:30 AM EST

Hooray for Jaime Pressly and Will Arnett getting nominated. However, it really stinks that Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold got snubbed for their hilarious work in "Everybody Hates Chris"

Auraib Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 04:57 AM EST

I think you can give Lisa Kudrow the emmy before the event itself the others are just not upto it well only Jane Kasmerick from Malcom but..Lisa Kudrow winning it would really be the best thing out of a shocking emmy lineup..either give it to her or Debra Messing so we would really get shocked...Jennifer Garner should be there instead of Geena Davis..I seriously think the GG put her there

duy Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 03:07 AM EST

So Emmy noms are jank again this year. "Shut your mouth and say it ain't so!"

Vance Fri, Jul 7, 2006 at 12:36 AM EST

After a whole day, I too have finally made my piece and accepted that the Emmy's are dead to me (unlike Ken Lay who I believe is hiding in the mountains somewhere in Colorado). Forgetting the fringe shows like Battlestar, Veronica Mars, Everwood or Gilmore Girls is unacceptable but I kinda saw it coming. To forget Entourage and freaking LOST while Stacked gets a nom? No Edie Falco or Jessica Walters? Jason Lee or The Office cast members? What a joke. The little integrity the Emmy's still held is now completely gone.

Peggy Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 11:13 PM EST

Do you really have to ask why "Lost" & "The Sopranos" were snubbed? You did watch these shows, didn't you? "Lost" is clearly making it up as it goes along. With the inane scripts and wooden acting, its almost to the point of being a cartoon. "The Sopranos" loss of writer Robin Green was evident. (Yes, I "get" that the season was about decisions & consequences), however, in this case, "profound" did not equal emotionally investing in these characters, as in the past seasons. That being said, James Gandolfini took lemons and made lemonade. To go from "Tony" to Kevin"and back to "Tony" was brilliant acting. I was thrilled that "Desperate Housewives" was virtually shut out. The fact that it was allowed to enter the comedy catagories (again) wasn't right. I'm glad the Emmy voters FINALLY wised up to "the powers that be" ploy of trying to better their chances in the WRONG catagory. Even as a drama, it was a horrible season. I for one, am glad Kevin James finally got a nod, he has been funny for 8 seasons, and I'm LOVING that "Six Feet Under" wasn't left out. (Go Francis Conroy!) I don't think Stockard Channing & Debra Messing were worthy of nominations, BUT it does make Lisa Kudrow's chance at a win that much better! The biggest surprise of those not nominated was Rainn Wilson as supporting actor for "The Office".

newbie Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 11:02 PM EST

I'm baffled. They claim they have some new system, but it seems more BingoHopperesque than ever! No Hugh Laurie??? Are you kidding me? SVU gets noms b/c they let them pound their fists &/or cry every episode, Criminal Intent is the better L&O in every way. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss has had, like, 4 episodes. Charlie Sheen over any of the Arrested Development or Scrubs people?? If you have to have a DHer, Alfre over Eva or Nicolette? Really? Seems like a pity bone that the community threw to an outrageously talented actress trapped in a universally acknowledged waste of a role. Beyond the red carpet, I have no interest.

Eric Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 10:00 PM EST

I just looked at the Emmy noms and I'm seriously sick to my stomach. You've got to be kidding me. Alfre Woodard!!!! She did nothing all season. But no love for Lauren Graham. The West Wing had a horrible season. As did Six Feet Under but there they are. Malcom in the Middle?! Come on. I can only imagine that somehow tapes didn't get to the Emmy voters. That can be the only explanation. I mean, I'm surprised that Laguna Beach didn't get a nod for Best Drama. I'm shocked and appalled. Oh God. Geena Davis. I just threw up in my mouth a little.

nina Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 09:52 PM EST

Don't forget Lauren Graham.

rbk Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 09:43 PM EST

Lisa Kudrow/Valerie Cherish is a goddess.

I was expecting, in that fabulous audio clip compilation, a line to sum up the sentiment of Kudrow/Cherish on hearing the nominees announced: "Well...I GOT IT!"

My one issue with your comments is the inclusion of Debra Messing in your "jank" category (btw thank you Danielle for your everlasting lingo) — as Grace, she did the best physical comedy and had the best comic delivery of any actress on television. She's a modern-day Lucille Ball. (Still, she can't come close to Kudrow, who so completely BECAME a character who was so lough-out-loud funny while still being incredibly deep, a character who you pitied and admired at the same time...)

stevie Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 08:30 PM EST

This is the worst Emmy lineup in years. Doesn't Law and Order: SVU pride itself on how there's no character development and it's not about the characters? So why are those people nominated? I'm not surprised that Kristen Bell missed out, but Battlestar Galactica got screwed, and so did Lauren Graham, the supporting cast of The Office, and Jason Bateman. At least G.O.B. got some props. Harumph.

Jason Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 08:24 PM EST

Seriously if cancelled shows are all the rage...

Where is Jennifer Garner?!

Yes, this wasn't the best season of Alias, but she managed nods when Alias was even lower during seasons three and four. And many people will agree that she was robbed for seasons one and two when she was absolutely brilliant.

Seriously? Geena Davis?! She is the least expressive actress in the business. I am pissed. Oh well, maybe Jennifer will win an Oscar, someday.

Celeste S. Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 08:11 PM EST

Where in the world is Lauren Graham? Simply becuase Gilmore Girls, one of the best written and acted shows on tv today, is not on the top 4 networks is no reason snub her for the 6th year in a row. The cast of GG deserves some WELL over du recognition for the amazing work they have done, rarely has a series actually increased rating so far into into its run and GG did so this very year. Aside from Lisa Kudrow, the remaning nominees, though all superb actresses failed in my mind to perform to true Emmy recognition standards. If i am not mistaken two shows where canceled well before this season was over, one barely lasting 13 episodes. All the nominees this year have been nominated almost every year, but did Stockard Channing , whom i adore for both her role on the West Wing and her movies and Julia Louis really deserve nods? Its time the Emmy's gave credit where credit is very much due... there are shows other than those on NBC ABC CBS. FOX The WB and UPN are networks with fresh and entertaining programs that deserve their day in the sun. Sarah Michelle Gellar never got her day in the sun but Lauren Graham has at least one more season. Emmy Voters need to get their heads out the sand and start nominating actors for the truely innovative and moving performances like Mary Louis Parker, Jason Lee, Jason Bateman, Zack Braff, Hough Laurie, Sandra Oh,TR Knight and many more.

Thataboy Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 08:10 PM EST

Lisa Kudrow simply HAS TO do the entire event in character. She should get as much of the cast as possible to join her. She should video tape the day or two leading up to it, the red carpet... everything.

And then she should release it as a special Webisode!

Todd Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 08:02 PM EST

EW initially panned The Comeback, I don't know why you've done such an about face.

Forrest Whitaker got screwed!!!!!!

Bob Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 07:51 PM EST

ENOUGH with Lauren Graham!!!!

Stef Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 07:38 PM EST

How can House get nominated for best drama, and Hugh Laurie doesn't get a best actor nomination?? He IS the show!

I don't even know why I care. The nominations and winners are so off the mark every year and this year is no different.

Elle Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 07:34 PM EST

What is up with Kevin James? And as for the rest of this sad lot, it seems the only change that occurred to the voting system is the fact that already celebrated actors in Hollywood get even more acknowledgement. I mean c'mon people, what the H E double hockey sticks is up with either of the lead actress categories?Love Lisa but the rest are just throwbacks! Channing better than EVERY Housewife? I was not a gigantic fan of the ladies' sophomore season but Come.On.Now. Braff, Rajskub (I know 24 killed but still), Falco, Gandolfini? I could go all day here folks.

aramisx Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 07:16 PM EST

I'm sad for Lauren Graham. You know she got all this buzz and the media really hyped her up as having a chance...and then this total and outright DISS from the Academy. I mean, did she spill some wine on the Academy prez's shoes or something?

B Ro Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 07:11 PM EST

There's been all this talk about Emmy snubbing Lauren and I totally agree... Lauren from "The Hills" got way snubbed! After all, she totally acts interested in that loser Jason, and if that isn't comedy, I don't know what is.

Silvio Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 06:46 PM EST

Omg the funniest blog love the soundbites. I am so happy for Valerie. I mean Lisa Kudrow's much deserving nomination for The Comeback.

MK Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 06:41 PM EST

Well hello hello hello! It's MK who owns valeriecherish.com (and popbytes) - thanks for linking up the site and the audio clips! it's rumored that on the DVD there will be great extras including something to do with Valerie and 'Dancing with the Stars' - that could be so hot if true!

Slezak Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 06:23 PM EST

Hey PopWatchers...I double-checked all the links. Except for the 'Save Valerie Cherish' one, they should take you straight to Valerie Cherish audio. Enjoy!

Sad and Confused Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 05:53 PM EST

Is it just me, or is this one of the worst list of nominees one could possibly imagine for this year? Still no Lauren Graham? And Stockard-friggin'-Channing is there? Charlie Sheen? No James Gandolfini? And God please tell me why Will and Grace got nominated again? No Zach Braff? What about John C. McGinley? Alfre Woodard?! My voice just gets higher and higher the more I think about this list.

What was the point of this new system if there are still the same actors in nearly every category?

Oh and Grey's Anatomy is disgustingly overrated.

At least they got it right with 24...

brandonk Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 05:44 PM EST

I think there's something wrong with the links, Slezak...most of them took me to popbytes.com or something.

Ed Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 05:41 PM EST

An outlet FINALLY, thanks Michael!

This would have been so awesome if The Comeback would have still been on; imagine the footage that would have been available for the show.

I think the race is between Casmarick and Lisa Kudrow, the others don't have a chance.

"I wanna see that"!
