Snap Judgment: Janet Jackson's new single

Jun 19, 2006, 10:20 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Music

9369__janet_l Where to begin discussing Janet Jackson's mere wisp of a new single, ''Call on Me'' (click here to listen)? Three things: 1) The vocals are so vacant and fluttery they make ''Again'' sound like a Celine Dion power ballad. 2) The song completely lacks a discernible hook or memorable lyric. 3) Nelly essentially hijacks what was supposed to be Janet's big radio comeback.

But the worst part: The blogfather is all up in my grill about it.

Thablogfatha: What's up, Slezak?

Firstnameaintbaby: Janet let me down again.

Theblogfatha: Again?!

Firstnameaintbaby: Mmm-hmm.

Thablogfatha: Well, what's up with this diva? Do you really like her that much?

Firstnameaintbaby: Yes, Mickey, I love her, she is fine, she sings a lot of nice things for me.

Thablogfatha: I know she used to sing nice stuff for you, but what has she sung for you late-leeeee?

(Insert jaunty Paula Abdul choreography here.)

She's big, no doubt about that, about a 36 double d.

Kelsey Bortner Fri, Feb 16, 2007 at 08:06 PM EST

Janet's 20.Y.O was the best! I love every mintue of it, it was hard for me to keep my eyes off of the screen, during the movie part. The coreography was awesome in the " Dancers Auditions" ..just becuse im a dancer myself. Everything els was very up-lifting to young and old people that have bought the whole record. Like Janets top coreographer said " Everyone dreams of dancing for a mege super legend star". I think I could speak for most Hip-Hop dancer's wishing for that one day, they too would dance for somone as big as " JANET JACKSON! "

I don't have anything personal against Janet Jackson. Some of her past songs I have liked, others I have not. However, I absolutely HATE this song! There are some songs I dislike, but I appreciate their "creativeness". There is ABSOLUTELY nothing creative or fresh about this song. After I heard it for the second time, it blends in with all the other "pseudo R&B" crap on the radio. Prince had it right in "Musicology" when he sang about music from back in the day. Bring back the neo-soul artists! Also, I can appreciate a woman being comfortable with herself and loving her body but like Chris Rock said, when your 40, your titties are for you and your man! Put your clothes back on Janet! Don't remind people of the SuperBowl!

Charlene Palmer Mon, Jul 24, 2006 at 10:06 AM EST

I have read a few of the comments posted on this site and have an opinion of Janet and the postings. First of all, Janet has not been in this business this long because she has put out continuous horrible music, but because she has proven herself to be a major artist in this business regardless of who her brother was at the time and her last name. No matter how good and spectacular her sales have been in the past (when all of you haters were more than likely happy with her music), there were still many out there that felt (and probably still do) that her music stinks and will never understand why anyone pays her any attention. My point is that you will not make everyone happy all of the time, hell you may never make them happy, but those who are satisfied with her new single/album will let her know that her job has been done, even if she only pleased one person. The single is doing very well on the charts, NOT TO MENTION THERE IS NOT EVEN A VIDEO OUT YET FOR IT!! please understand that point for ALL!!! that it is worth. I do not want to compare her to anyone of today, but just realize that no one out right now in the past ten years in her class of music has been as successful as her in all that she does. I am not knocking Mariah (though I am not a fan), DA*N sure am not knocking Mary (she is a totally different type of artist than Janet and is the SH*T), no disprespect to Beyonce (am not a fan), but I am so tired of the shaking your booty videos that I swear every place she does her videos must be suffering mild tremors, but just enough to bounce her behind around.
Janet is truly an Icon, not becuase she makes everyone happy, not because she puts out the best music and no one compares, not because she can dance her behind off, but because she has a combo of things going on. I do not consider her a great singer, but her performances are so eyecatching that all the flaws go out the window. One posting stated that because of the love we have for Janet, we don't realize how whack her new single is. NOT A FACT SWEETIE!! The one thing you need to realize is that you can never think for me. Hell, you may think french fries and ketcup go perfect together and I may think french fries and mayonaisse is the best. Point is what you dislike and what I dislike can be the same or not, but don't sit here and say that the only reason I like the song is because I love Janet and the song is whack. NO, I LOVE THE NEW SINGLE BECAUSE I BELIEVE THE SH*T IS HOT!! BELIEVE THAT!!! Anywho, all these statements are just that, statements/comments. We all are entitled to our opinion, and what you have read is mine. By the way, I will purchase this single today if I can find it.

Brooklynluv Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 11:29 AM EST

All you fans of "Call on me" must be on Janet's payroll. Damito Jo sucked and every single off that dumb album sucked as well. Just like "20 Years Old" is going to suck. Crystal get a life. All Janet can do is show her T & A because that's were her talent lies. In her fake breasts and big butt. Janet has gone the floozy route because that's all she can sell...her body.

crystal Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 08:43 AM EST

This song is # 4 on the AOL top 100 and on other stations it is ranked very high, and it was justed released, so this should tell you something about Janet.
You already know, so let's face it, Janet is Hot in 2006 and 20 years earlier so you all need to listen because "Call on Me" is the hit. Good Job Janet!!!

Chrystal Mon, Jul 17, 2006 at 08:38 AM EST

Hello,
Please stop hating on Janet!!!. I happened to love this song. I have played it about 20 times, and I am still in love with it. Did you all forget that Janet is a legend is has been were the other artists like Beyonce, and Brittany and who ever else is trying to go. Janet walked across the stage at the BET awards and receive a standing ovation, now tell me who else could do that? Beyonce could do it as long as the men in the audience new that she was going to shake it across the stage. Please leave Janet alone because at one time she was an icon in your eyes also. No other artist can compare to Janet, besides Janet creates her own songs. Beyonce's Deja Vu sounds came from "wanna be starting something" and some people even say that it came from "don't stop til you get enough" so leasve Janet alone. Janet is Hot in 2006!!! Forever a legend!!! All for Janet!

Summer jam for 06'....you have got to be kidding me. Is this song even on the charts? Janet, you're looking good but this song is whack.

i really like the song. To some of people who said is a bad song, at least i can understand what she is saying. The artists out now i can't really understand what they are singing about. Janet had been out there for a long time. She is a true diva besides Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin( an excellent diva), Patti Labelle,Mary J. Blige.

Scoop-luv Thu, Jul 6, 2006 at 06:52 AM EST

When I want to punish my dog I'll play this song.

This is a very poor song; especially for a comeback.

Janet has done more then her share for the music industry, and her fans throughout her years as a pop diva in the world of entertainment. She has created more top charted tracks and inviting videos then many of the women trailing in her tracks today. To love everything that she had, has, or have to offers is not what I believe she is asking when she steps into or out of the recording studio, but to respect the foundation and the love of music in itself is, or at least should be an objective of all listeners. This is more the enough reason to listen to what she has to say every time an album is dropped. To honor her creativity as an artist should not be a question but a given, and for many people it’s a privilege. I believe some people truly do not understand what she is trying to convey through her song and dance because she speaks from a personal point of view in her song writing. Everyone experience life differently, and many people do not have the strong display of affection for every part of life both good and not so good that Janet presents in every album. To her fans, continue to support and enjoy the great performances of this phenomenal women who sometimes speaks what we as her fans are thinking and feeling. Continue showing her that not everyone in the world is so judgmental to the point where criticism for another persons hard work defines who we are, what we believe, or how we choose to live. To those who are not fans of this arties, continue to keep and open heart and mind, and continue enjoying and respecting the creativity all music. There is nothing wrong in knowing what you like or don’t like and supporting that, but know that there is nothing right about criticizing something you may not completely understand or trashing another persons idea of creativity.

Don Fri, Jun 30, 2006 at 08:04 AM EST

Hey you!! yeah you, with your lame comments. In which were very unnecessary. For one thing, Janet is definitely not a sell out, meaning she don't have to come out with a single to please less appreciative people like you. She has been doing this ballgame for a long time. It has already charted since your funky comments, well, in just 1 WEEK. You need to rethink you retard comments before you choke on them. Peace and love. I am out!!!!!

wildchild Sun, Jun 25, 2006 at 08:30 AM EST

People, this blog is to critique Janet's new song, not the person that she is, period. Her fans are not being objective. You have a blind love for Janet that clearly clouds your judgement and clogs up your ears. The song is very bad. It's a disappointment across the board. This new album is suppose to be a nod to Control. But it just makes me want to nod off. ZZZZZZZZZZZ

Tionne Sat, Jun 24, 2006 at 08:45 PM EST

Janet doesn't need any approval from anyone, she is a diva and alot of these new and young artist dream of haveing a career like she has had.I love her and am a true fan. Call on me is the way she should come back on the scene. Janet should keep up what she does and continue to be the icon hta she is......

this song is fiyah! JD delivers and Janet most def shows up big. This is a chill joint though, she'll give u the dance jumpoff some of ya'll are craving, just groove wit this for a minute. Im telling you, its going to be Janet. all over again. Come in with Thats the Way Love Goes and then hit em in the head with a hot dance track (If). And for the person who said she aint going to have a comeback like Madonna..unlike Madonna, janet never fell off, and when is the last time Madonna had something to rock to?...

Jay Fri, Jun 23, 2006 at 02:43 PM EST

"Call On Me" is the perfect summer chill jam. Actually all of Janet's album have opened with a chill groove, except "Rhythm Nation." Rhythm opened with "Miss You Much," but all the others opened with a chill groove. So far it appears the single is working. She debut at#48 on the R&B chart even without the song being released to radio until Monday.

Chris Thu, Jun 22, 2006 at 06:54 PM EST

I have been a casual fan of JJ since Control and finally had the opportunity to see her All For You Tour. I have to say, I was surprised when she sang, "Again". It was gorgeous and definitely not lip- synced. No, she isn't a belter. No, She doesn't have a "huge" voice. However, when given the chance, it's sensual and alluring. Not everybody has to sing the same way. It's one of the reasons I can't stomach shows like American Idol. Everybody trying so hard to pander to the lowest common denominator. Yuk! Do your own thing. Comparing artists to each other is so 8th grade, too. My advice: Like who you like and don't worry about what other people are telling you to like.

Billione Saadiq Thu, Jun 22, 2006 at 12:11 PM EST

I cannot believe that some of yu have doubts about Ms. Jackson's star power. Janet's ablum "20 Years Old" marks the milesone for her "Control" release, not he years in music. She had been on the scene for more than 20 years, and she is still doing it. She is one of the most immitated artists of all time. She could tour with out a current release, and you are doubting her because of the lead single from the new album? Nelly was busy reaching for his freshly powdered balls and a diaper when Janet was making hits. It shows her staying power and adaptability that she even has enough cred to allow him to do a song with her, with out hurting her career. As famous as Nelly is, more people know Janet than will ever know him, and are likely to buy ger records. Both Nelly and Janet sound good on this track. It is clear that Janet released "Call On Me" as an appetizer. Who goes to a resturant andorders Steak off jump? You get an appetizer, a couple drinks, and that's when the waiter hits you with the real reason you showed up: The Main Course.

The new single is the bomb for anyone that knows a jam when they hear it. Those of you who didn't like it at first will love it once the video comes out. Janet has never been a loud singer she always sings sexy so pay attention you might catch the groove. GIVE ME A BREAK! This song is dope. I wish people would stop trying to dog Janet.

matt Thu, Jun 22, 2006 at 01:12 AM EST

Terible song Janet 'call on me' i hope the album is better

B. Floyd Thu, Jun 22, 2006 at 12:27 AM EST

I won't front, I was expecting Janet to come with a dance song. I love Janet, but everyone knows she's not the most amazing vocalist. Performance is where she shines. That being said, I love "Call On Me." Do I think it should have been her "comeback" single? Not at all. She may have gotten away with this being her first single had Damita Jo not bombed. But, in world where she has to flex her billboard muscles, double time, to prove she's still got it, "Call on Me" is probably a better choice for 2nd or 3rd single. Still, I think "Call On Me" could be hit. It's light, fun, easy listening...perfect for the summer. However, as I'm riding in my car blaring "Call On Me" til the cd wears thin...I'll be enjoying JD's production and Nelly's verses, but still waiting for Janet's comeback. Cause however good or bad "Call On Me" might be, it ain't Miss Jackson.

Janet Jackson is a huge name in the island of American Samoa (U.S. Territory) Everyone loves her there! She is so unique in all ways. She is beautiful and very attractive. I cant wait until the day 20 year old will be out. This is a shout from the islands of Hawaii and American Samoa. We love you!!!

SD Wed, Jun 21, 2006 at 08:14 PM EST

I agree and disagree with a bit of what just about everyone has said. In my opinion (and, remember that's the operative word here), the song passes (to Go but not with flying colors). I find nothing noticeably catchy or dynamic about the song (maybe the hook if you replay it about 10 times in a row). I do favor Nelly's parts, because I find it very annoying that--for much of Janet's work--it's very hard to audibly discern the lyrics. I mean, I could hear a dove cry in tune with a beat, and it could have just about the same effect. Also, singing and whispering/fluttering are two different things in my opinion, and--in my assessment (which means all the world to me)--she's never been what I consider a rich and resonant voice anyway. Never has. Never will. Maybe everyone doesn't need that kind of voice to be a singer. She's proven (and so have others) that everyone doesn't need that kind of voice to be successful. In any event, her showmanship (in most cases) against the backdrop of the musical arrangements has been the magic carpet to keep her on top of the game (which she has been out of for a while). Maybe it will continue to be her magic recipe? I hope the rest of the selections on this album have a lot more substance, catchiness (or whatever you want to call it) than this one, because I really don't think a lot of people will necessarily rush out and buy this new album just because she's a Jackson or Janet or Nasty if you ask her (old news)... or just because she and JD got the hookup. It's good enough for, "Hey DJ, spin that song (but not all night long)." :) Okay, that's my two cents (maybe five), and if I hurt someone's feelings, don't cry, dry your eyes or if I stepped on anyone's toes, pick 'em up, pick 'em up, pick 'em up! It's only my opinion. I am not (nor do I think you are) going to reap any royalties off of this one. ;)

Nice&Slow Wed, Jun 21, 2006 at 03:24 PM EST

I have to admit that I only became a Janet Fanatic in the mid-to-late 80s. During that time I wasn't a big music fan when it came to pop and R&B but I was more into Rap. Then came Whitney and I embraced the grace that she resonated during her earlier years as well as her incomparable vocals. She was awesome. When Janet hit the scene I thought she was the bomb. She was sexy, her dancing was artistic, her music flowed well, and she had the "right stuff." I was too young to get into the storyline of the music but I just enjoyed the dance, music, and looking at her shake her stuff. Then came RN1814. I thought to myself "over-production" when listening to it at first but she was still cute, sexy, and demure so I said to myself---whatever. By the time Janet came out I was a little more mature so I could reflect back on the messages presented during the Control and RN era but I definitely embraced the storyline, the music, dance, and the all-so sexy, demure, sculpted-body, nice-frame, and smooth voice of "janet." What a great way to break her third album in with unveiling an awesome body, a completely new look, different sound, and reinvented style of dance and presentation. Janet is inventive to say the least and probably has one of the best team of marketers behind her. Velvet Rope was completely different. The images portrayed a Janet struggling with pain and trying to find her way inspite of public opinion. I think we can all relate to that and therefore can garner lessons from this album as well. All-4-U had the message of appreciation of love and support to the fans as well as dealing with heartache and disconnect from friends and loved ones. Again, a message we can all embrace cause we all at one time or another have dealt with heartache and disconnect from someone we loved or thought as being a friend. The music was good, the dances were awesome, and the concert was like no other. That is one thing about Janet she is one of the greatest female entertainers of our time and I always feel her concerts are optimal in concert-entertainment. The Damita Jo album took me for a curve ball. I wasn't stuck on the music and it lacked any true message. It almost seemed as though Janet, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis had lost the flavor that they were able to capture and put together in her previous albums. Transition is hard and I think Janet has finally made a complete transition. She is no longer relying on that flavor that she has maintained for 20 years with producers JJ and TL. No one in the music industry to my knowledge has been able to coalesced music and message together so well with such finesse as Janet with the help of her producers. It appears that Janet may have returned to her roots and not succumb to the prevailing demands of artist to go a certain direction. I love a lot of the female artist out here today inclusive of Toni Braxton, CAguillera, Beyonce, CMilian, etc...but none deviant from the road that is so well traveled as janet has. Look at Beyonce's new song...it could have been a song off of her solo album "Dangerously In Love." Its getting a great deal of hype and I like it but I think they give her too much credit when she uses the same formula she used two-three years ago. An artist should grow and develop like a plant. Janet is finally stepping out and into the right direction with someone besides Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and she is doing it with someone she has chemistry with that will continue to ensure she stays true to being inventive in her music and that hopefully will catapult her back into the Number 1 spot. All hail the Queen of Pop/R&B.

The bridge on this song is hot. Janet Jackson's vocal delivery is soft as velvet. Nelly has a serious flow too. The song is so smooth & sounds like a perfect summer hit. I love da bass! It is a "safe" release, but I'm sure that was the intention. It's funny that everyone was expecting a dance track & she throws a curve ball and does something chill. It sounds nice...very solid track. Has me thinking bout the album...it might be time to revisit Janet.

ps...just reading some of the posts prior to this mine...what's the deal w/ everyone liking that Hilton song? yall are a bunch of sheep -lol.

Dandy Wed, Jun 21, 2006 at 09:39 AM EST

I like the song alone. It does have memorable lyrics - you just have to listen to it more than once. The beat is very nice. Its laid back, makes me feel relaxed. Not every j. song should force you to get up and do an aerobic workout. This song is perfect for the season. Go Janet and Nelly - ya'll rocked it.

HumbleBee Wed, Jun 21, 2006 at 06:57 AM EST

As much as I'd like to disagree with this review it's impossible for me to do so. You all Janet fans should recodnize the fact that the review is not an attack towards Ms Jackson but an honest opinion about the song.

I've been a fan of Janet for ages and I can honeslty say that the song is not good. I blame Jermaine Dupri, some blame Nelly. However, there's still hope. This is just the first single, we don't know how good the actual album is and there will be more single releases before September.

Janet indeed is a puppet in a string when it comes to musical directions. People convince her doing something she shouldn't - just to get an easy success.

Paul Wed, Jun 21, 2006 at 06:14 AM EST

Whatever, those comments about Janet's new song is full of bullshit. Call on me is a very nice song, and Nelly brings some hot flavor to the trackt. Go Janet, do your thang momma. Haters can go straight to hell!!!!!

D.E.Z.Z.I. Wed, Jun 21, 2006 at 01:30 AM EST

I LOVE IT!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! GO JANET!!!!! haterz.... LOL :P

Mr. J Wed, Jun 21, 2006 at 01:29 AM EST

Seriously... this is a real review???? The song is catchy and infectious and you can DEFINITELY follow the hook unless you're 3 months old. And you clearly make it obvious that everyone shouldn't have internet access and the ability to make a "review". And how old are you because I think this song was made for adults!

chris Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 10:58 PM EST

the inevitable has happened. janet has recorded a reject from the mariah-jermaine dupri sessions. an obvious attempt to court radio and stellar sales, artistry be damned. call on me? don't hold your breath on it, honey.

shorace Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 10:00 PM EST

I love this song for all it is worth! It was exactly what I expected. If you kept up with all of Janet’s achieves you would have read it was going to be a mid-tempo song. That is exactly what it is. I love the song and will support Janet in anything she does. LOVE YOU JANET!! Forget all the negative posts!

tj Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 09:33 PM EST

The song is great and Janet is great, this song me and my girl can play throughout the summer. I love it.

tj Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 09:30 PM EST

its a great song and great for a summer soother. I love it and my girlfriend does too.

Princess Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 07:20 PM EST

I love the song! It's addictive and it's been on repeat nonstop since it's premiere. Props to Janet for coming back with such a catchy tune!

robbie Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 06:09 PM EST

Is Janet STILL making records? When was the last time this woman had a hit? Just because you lost 300 pounds doesn't mean she should be allowed in a recording studio. The woman CAN'T sing. That is why she lip-synchs at all her shows. She's just like Britney, all tits and ass, no talent.

POP Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 05:52 PM EST

Loves it!

Jeremy Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 04:18 PM EST

I like the new Janet track. It is catchy, and the more you listen to it, the more it grows. From almost every album, Janet will have an urban single....such as "I want You" from Damita Jo. This would be considered the urban single, and it's already doing good, so I think the JD knows what he is doing. More than we give him credit. Also, it was just confirmed by Jermaine Dupri on MTV.com that Janet and Mariah are doing a duet together. That should be interesting...............

Terri Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 04:00 PM EST

I think the song is very sweet. I have to admit Janet's vocals are a little loose on this one and i've been a janet fan for years. maybe after the superbowl incident, she's lost some of the old enthusiasm she used to have for singing and such. But with Nelly on there too....i think it will not be a flop. I think it'll get airplay and i don't care what some of you may say, janet's not past her prime. i think she's just been tossed to the gutter by some of the american public and that may have affected her abilities. Remember, its always for the audience...

Sides, we haven't heard the rest of the album. Janet's gonna bring it because she always does.

jon Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 03:59 PM EST

I forget, how does myself and most others who didn't like the song but clearly said we love Janet, become haters? It is in fact those who can point to her musical flaws that truly love her, because we know she capable of so much more. She is Miss Jackson if your Nasty, after all. Blind (or should it be Deaf) Janet Lovers need to stop forcefeeding themselves everything they hear and realize subpar content when presented to them...

And even Nelly knows he can write better than this...

chocomel Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 03:51 PM EST

All of the hater-ation! Anyone who has followed the career of a trendsetting superstar knows they don't come with a new single that's predictable. With the deluge of new dance songs (Beyonce, Christina, etc.), its easy to get lost in the dance shuffle. No hate on those ladies, I love them too. Janet's Call on Me definitely features Nelly's writing style more but last I recall he was still creating chart topping records with subtle, infectious hooks. Call on Me is an excellent cool out jam for the summer. Janet has always had the haters and after 20 years you are still comparing her to the likes of newcomers who were sloppering on mommy's bossom when Janet first began her reign on the charts. 20 Years...and she is still relevant! So hate all you want, Miss Janet remains at the top of the heap while many of those other so called sensations come and go. You don't have to like it, but you must respect it. If Janet doesn't sell another record (yeah, right), she has conquered the music game! So keep drinking your HATER-AIDE, cuz the girl is here to her thing! JDJ, you're alright with me!

jklh Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 03:38 PM EST

just a correction on my entry below: "lonely" from the rythm nation album, not "alone". take a listen

jklh Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 03:22 PM EST

big jan fan, have been for 30 of my 37 yrs but this isn't it. where to begin...it's a safe song, it sounds like a song mariah passed on, a song any random female r & b singer could put out with little effort. i think that's it- there is no effort. janets' tracks alone are usually worth the listen w/out her vocals. this track is a repetitve loop that goes no where. there is no build, no high point. same w/ the vocals. jans not a sanger(that is my term for somone who can really sing), but she is usually very inventive w/ her vocals by way of layering and rich harmonies. i would take so many of her past mid to slow jams over this one. i mean can you really imagine this live on tour? this ain't you or jimmy and terry, this is jd. janet, don't take the easy road, you have given us some amazing music in the past. continue to push your envelope, you don't have to do what every other female is doing. they all followed you, don't follow them. i remeber the first time i heard thats the way love goes, got till its gone, i get so lonely, funny how time flies, alone, rope burn, any time any place- all those songs spoke to me. to play call on me in a line up with just those songs, it wouldn't hold up. sorry janet, but here's to hoping the album will be miles above that track. j.

jon Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 03:19 PM EST

You heard me. Paris Hilton. "Stars Are Blind." FULL BLAST!

As much as in enjoyment of the song as in a protest to artists like Janet who make too much money and have too much support to choose bad material like this. How is it that Corinne Bailey Rae or Gnarls Barkley can have great songs out and no one has heard of them until this year and Janet, who has been around forever, (and Beyonce too for that matter) can think this is just as good as what people are listening to or what's she's done in the past. Drum roll please. It's NOT! Listening to this for the first time was like opening holiday presents and finding tube socks. Useful, but not what I wanted!

Fine, I may not blast "Stars Are Blind" but I will listen to it, and "Control" on repeat. At least Ms. Hilton knows how to have some fun.

Levente Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 03:14 PM EST

It's okay... but even though I got the free download of it, I will not be adding that to my iPod. I don't think it will even come close to the comeback Mariah just had!! Too bad too, cause I LOVED Janet back in the day- I'm just kind of over it now (reminds me too much of Micheal- I can confused at who's singing!).

But! Christina's new song- Ain't No Other Man??? THAT is a "comeback" song. We haven't heard from her in years and she delivers unbelievable vocals and sass to go along with it?! I'll be buying her album over Jessica's, definitely Paris', and even Janet's.

MDC Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 03:09 PM EST

No one at Entertainment Weekly is capable of more than a "Snap Judgement" You're all a bunch of idiots and I haven't read your magazine since the 90's. Keep movin' Janet. You've left them all behind for 20 years now.

Lindsey Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 02:56 PM EST

Excuse me? Madonna put out Confessions and that was a huge hit. I know the critics loved it. I know EW loved it. I love it. It's an awesome cd. Great to dance to. Way better than American Life.

Alan Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 02:53 PM EST

You're turning Stars Are Blind on full blast? Wow, Pathetic. That is absolutely stupid. Paris Hilton can't sing. She sounds like she's 12 years old. And what's with the wanna-be reggae?

Dee Bug Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 02:07 PM EST

I heard a song on her website that wuz much better: "Weekend"!! "Call on Me" just doesn't have a lot of get up & go that summer songs need!

Lonnie Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 01:52 PM EST

This song is just plain HOT! It's a very creative way for Janet to make her splash back on US radio. And to that person that is thanking GOD for the likes of Nelly Furtado...(Timbaland makes that song) and Paris Hilton... (nothing needs to be said) for their new releases, PLEASE. Lets just say, thank GOD your not a dj in my hometown.....Janet, feel free to Call On Us anyday with songs like that.

~KREOLE FIRE~ Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 01:38 PM EST

I love "Call On Me". It's perfect to bring her back onto the radio. Remember, she has to overcome the unfair negativity from the superbowl. "Call on me" is a summer jam that will usher Janet back into the mainstream. The song really grows on you. It's intoxicating !!!!!

fred Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 01:33 PM EST

When I first heard Call on Me, I loved it. Although, Janet's is known 4 her dance hits, she has layers. “Control” was an album about basically growing up, leaving the nest so to speak. “Rhythm Nation” was an album that was very socially conscious. The album “Janet” was a much more mature sexy Janet, which revealed mature sexy woman. “Velvet rope” was an album that let us in on a more personal Janet. It revealed that she is human too, and has deeper side with spiritual needs just like everyone else. “All for you” of course was an album about that came after her divorce. It’s about being single, and stepping out into the dating world. And “Damita Jo” was an album about being in love with JD. Her musical style ranges from "if" to "I get so lonely, to "all 4 you". This encompasses almost everything, rock, R&B, to pop. And for all those that don't like Janet's Mid-tempo and slow songs. If all Janet did was fast dance songs, we would have never had "Let's wait a while", or "That's the way love goes", or "Again".

jon Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 01:06 PM EST

I am now officially convinced that record companies get interns to write positive reviews in blogs. Come on people, we are talking about Janet Jackson. Miss Jackson if your NASTY! Even if this isn't the official first single (which I thought I heard it was) this isn't good enough! It's not that I'm hating on Janet. I love Janet. No you don't understand, I LOVE Janet but this is Not Good Enough. "Got 'Til It's Gone," good enough. "All for You," good enough. Even "I Want You" was good enough. This song (I can't even remember the name of the song) isn't GOOD ENOUGH! It's basically Nelly's song and he had more chemistry with Tim McGraw on "Over and Over." They need to let Janet eat carbs again so she can pick a quality song to release over this...

This is strike three of bad diva songs (christina, beyonce, now janet). Thank you Nelly Furtado and Paris Hilton for saving the summer. I'm turing "Stars Are Blind" on FULL BLAST!

beb Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 12:56 PM EST

Not likin' it. Period. End of story.

Phil Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 12:55 PM EST

Gotta say I love all types of pop music, & I had high hopes for "Call On Me",& I have to agree, as a Janet fan I was a bit let down. The song is billed as her "comeback", but she seems relegated to being featured on a new Nelly single. Don't get me wrong, the song will be a hit, & it sounds as fun as the new Beyonce, Xtina, & Ciara. I am waiting for the remixes, but as most DJs will tell you, it'll be hard to work out a dance mix of "Call On Me" since it is a duet and Nelly's verses are inter-lapped with Janet's vocals.
Gnarls Barkley "Crazy" will BE the song of the summer, but for people looking for breezey summer fun music, NOT FOUND ON YOUR RADIO, go check out the new reggae singer, Elan's debut, "Together As One", he even has a duet with Gwen Stefani!!

Fred Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 12:20 PM EST

I love Janet's new single. Its a very nice mid-tempo song thats good to chill, and cruise too. Has some real nice bass. Way to go Janet!!!

wilusjamaica Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 10:18 AM EST

yow amerka, yuh have a hot one there, luu yuh bad Janet, yuh do hole heap a nice things fi me fi years without tears. nuff love

Scott Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 09:44 AM EST

I like the song and am a big fan but honestly I was expecting more. I'm sure that there will be a kick ass remix soon so that should make up for it! The rest of the album will probably be much better. I still have faith in Janet as an artist and will wait to hear the entire album before I pass judgement.

Clearly, some Janet Jackson fan site has discovered this popwatch post. oy.

moreno Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 08:38 AM EST

The Janet song is great has a nice smooth summer feel to it. I like that she has done a duet with Nelly they play off of each other well--It worked in her duet with Busta Rymes and its working here.

BTW, Who are these people who still believe that Madonna is a musical force to be reckoned with? The tired ole broad has turned out crap for years.

shawty Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 08:37 AM EST

Hey i love COM! it'z a nice layed back song,so i'm feelin' it!I mean i think she should've came with a hot club banggin' dance track as a first single..But..COM is NOT a bad song at all..And don't be comparin' Janet 2 no lame ass wanna be superstar paris hilton!Janet betta den dat..And dis WILL be Janet's BIG COMEBACK!!! 4sho
JOB WELL DONE JANET!!!

Emmaneul Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 08:28 AM EST

all The Heaters of Janet go to Hell. The song is really cool and Sensual I believe her single is gon' a smash Hit.
But She should've Worked With other producer Beside Jimmy, Terry and Her Boo Jermaine. She should try to work With The Neptunes o'course, Kanye west againg, Cool and Dre, Darkchild crew. Andre and Vidal, Andre 3000, Raphael Saddiq, also Lil John, Sean Garret, Dr. Dre. people who could've given Her a different Panache. But anyway she's Gon a SUPER SMASH HIT. SHE A WONDERFUL ARTIST SHE HAS CHOPS TO BE AGAIN IN THE TOP OF THE CHARTS

RJ Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 07:41 AM EST

This song makes me want to drive off a cliff it's so awful. Janet just does not know when to quit. She should have quit after the Velvet Rope. She has the worst voice known to mankind. And she is too old to try to stay in this genre of music. Janet do us a favor and retire. Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bn Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 07:26 AM EST

Frankly speaking, usually Janet's songs are better than other r&b chicks songs.( Mariah,Beyonce )
Even songs of her Damita Jo is better than Mariah's Mimi stuff.
But onething remains untouched that is Madonna

geeslady2020 Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 06:47 AM EST

Janet try again. Beyonce and Christina got you beat!

Mike Tue, Jun 20, 2006 at 12:41 AM EST

Janet please CALL ON ME!!!!!

Love it!

M Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 11:11 PM EST

Why does everybody keep saying a comeback? Janet has been turning out albums for the last 20 years, let's see where most of these other artists will be musically 20 years from now. Sounds to me you don't care too much for Janet to begin with which made your review of the song a little bias. The song is a great first single, perfect for the summer time. Can't wait for the album!

Rudogg8 Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 09:03 PM EST

Aight, being a Janet Fan since we both were 7 years old (yes I just turn 40 and still FAB) and I am from the The Lou (yeah that's right Nelly is my Homie), my review would be bias. This breezy laidback joint is what Janet does well. No it is not overly hype in music or lyrics(Christina and Beyonce, which I love both) or as fierce as Faster Kill Pussycat, which I too love) but you bet it will do just as well. Plus you know the album will cover all of the above mention. Take a chill pill, relax and enjoy it's coolest this summer.

Thad Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 09:03 PM EST

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Paul U. Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 07:37 PM EST

well I had a chance to listen to it...

sounds fine to me, not great but should be a good driving-and-trying-to-relax song, thought that is impossible these days

much better than Rhianna SOS...homegirl stole a classic song for her hook and totally cribed fomr Madonna's Hung Up for the video...

Brian Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 05:45 PM EST

gosh, janet tries to throw out a perfect, laid-back summer jam, and she's being ridiculed for it! you can't look at this song as a "comeback" or "music-defying"...you just need to get lost in the jammin' beat and janet's beautiful harmonies and enjoy it! GOOD JOB JANET! It's BEAUTIFUL!

Fatima Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 05:32 PM EST

Finally the Christina/Beyonce battle can end

There is no way that either could be called worse than this piece of crap

I read a Jet article when Janet was getting all fiesty at the current r&b girls claiming they learned everthing from her and that they all copy. So what does she do to bring it? She puts out the most radio starved single of her life, that just pleads to be like we belong together. janet is officially over.

Osmin Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 04:21 PM EST

Well I love Janet and its not a great song but its not a terrible one either. The Album is coming out Sept. 26th 2006, Im more than sure that the second single is going to be better...its a good marketing strategy. I was a bit disappointed because I wanted something huge as the 1st single ("Miss You Much" or "That's the way love goes" kinda stuff) but "Call of Me" is not a bad song.

shae Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 03:50 PM EST

well I happen to like the song a lot and I cant stand janet Jackson I caught it at the beginning I guess and I didnt know who it was until the dj told me and I have to say Im impressed she is going a different unexpected direction than Beyonce who I am a FAN of but Im highly dissappointed in that rediculous single. but anyway like the single Janet has a long way to grow on me but I would buy this single if they just released it as a single.

Tyler Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 02:32 PM EST

Umm.
I don't like this song either. I DO like Janet though. I was hoping for something more up-beat and fun. This is kinda.. boring and.. the song just stinks. I also don't like Nelly. So, that's another part of it. Oh well, I'm sure Janet's next single will be more fun. This song is a big thumbs down for me.
For whomever said they wont take advice from someone who likes a song with Brittany Murphey... have you even heard the song? It's a dance song, but wow.. Brittany can really sing. I love it.

Anthony Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 01:53 PM EST

I have heard Beyonce, Xtina, and Ciara. Janet's new song is better than any of them, in my opinion.

Andrew Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 01:31 PM EST

I'm a huge Janet fan, but I have to agree that I was terribly underwhelmed by this single. I could see it maybe as a third or fourth release, but with all of the hype surrounding her comeback, this track just fell flat for me. I'm already not a huge fan of Nelly (this seems like an attempt to create a "Dilemma" part 2) and the beat goes nowhere. While I'm excited to hear the new album come Fall, I do hope they release something else that has some merit as a "comeback" single.

Miles Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 01:23 PM EST

i agree with that statement. I am done with pop songs that require a rap break to sell the song. It's a 20th century tactic and it should be placed in musical historical context and abadoned a.s.a.p.

warrior Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 01:21 PM EST

Madonna is not dated!
Janet is not dated! She simply doesn't kiss ass to sell records like mariah carey!!!!!

Erik Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 01:11 PM EST

Nothing but Haters. Shewt, if it wasn't for JANET, There would be No Mariah, No Beyonce and who effin cares about Paris Hilton... she's a talentless girl who is only famous because she's rich. Big deal.

Just wait when Janet's album comes out and stomps B-day outta the water, us true Janet fans will be the ones saying I told you so.

steve Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 01:02 PM EST

another song with ANOTHER BORING repetitive 2-4 bar pattern. example, new christina, new nelly furtado, basically anything produced by Timbaland, or all the other HOT producers of the moment. whatever happened to song structure? jeez, these songs must take like 5 minutes to make. also, can we PLEASE get rid of the guest rapper/producer duets. if you can call them that. nelly's uh and yeah and whoa does not add any HOTNESS to the song no matter what they think. there. done.

roberto Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 12:31 PM EST

....this magazine long ago abandoned janet....so any opinions here don't really go unbiased...sorry mr. slezak...bad judgement on your part...but there is still hope for you:)

Eric Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 12:17 PM EST

OK, wow. First of all, never compare Janet to Paris Hilton. The song is not the best. But It's Like That, Mariah's first single off of Mimi didn't get that much radio play either. Janet could release a second single closer to the album release date which is is still almost three months away. And is anyone here a real Janet fan, because I am. I love her. And Damita Jo, was not that bad of an album. Take out the dirty songs in the middle and it's a serviceable album. If it weren't for the Super Bowl "incident", "My Baby" the song with Kanye could have been huge. Give this song a chance.

Roberto Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 12:16 PM EST

....I am not taking any advice from someone who likes the paris hilton or brittany murphy song...

Call on me...love it!

dmac Mon, Jun 19, 2006 at 11:58 AM EST

Yeah, she may speak in english, but latelys he is singing in some alien language. Its so low and inaudible I dont even think a dog can pick up what she's saying. If it wasnt for nelly I doubt this song would even be getting any kind of press. It sucks so badly. Sorry Janet, No Mariah like comeback for you.
